The new electrolytic copper refinery situated at Copper Cliff, Ontario, has been in operation for over a year and a half. This plant is operated by the Ontario Refining Company, Limited. The associated companies behind the enterprise are the International Nickel ?company of Canada, Limited, the American Metals Company, Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, and Ventures, Limited. The plant was an outgrowth of the rapid development of copper resources in the nickel-copper ores of the Frood and other great mines in the Sudbury district, and of the desire to have all primary production units grouped together as compactly as possible. Starting anode furnace operations in June, 1930, and electrolytic refining on July 1st of that year, after a record-breaking construction programme completed in only fifteen months, the plant soon settled into its stride and the usual starting-up difficulties were .rapidly overcome. The rated capacity of the plant, namely, twenty million pounds of refined copper per month, has, of course, never been reached, due to depressed business conditions and latterly to the world copper agreement limiting production. It may be said, however, that the present installation has proved its ability to produce in excess of its rated capacity, and with relatively minor additions to plant and equipment that capacity can be doubled. Owing to the severity of the winters, when temperatures of from 20 to 40 degrees below zero are to be expected, the building of this refinery involved a number of problems in insulation, layout, ventilation, etc., which were rather unusual in copper-refinery construction.

The mining industry represents a significant investment in infrastructure of which steel plays a key role. Many structures in a mine are made of steel including shaft structures (buntons, station steelwork and headgear); stope structures (roof supports, pipe hangers); haulageway structures (ore transfer stations, electrical stubbies); and surface structures (plant buildings, tank supports, pipe gantries, conveyor belts, stacks, stockpile structures, stairways and railings). Maintenance of structural components can often be difficult because of the environment, including those where corrosive fumes persist, or limited access, such as in shafts where access is limited, or to short maintenance shifts or where limited working space is available. Thus a cost-efficient, long-lasting and maintenance-free protection system for steel should be specified. Galvanizing provides the required high-quality, long-term corrosion protection to steel. Galvanizing provides protection in two ways, first as a physical barrier to corrosion and secondly by means of cathodic or sacrificial protection that is unique to zinc. The dual nature of corrosion protection provided by galvanizing significantly extends the service life of steel even in the most challenging environments. The unique corrosion protection properties provided by galvanized steel will be highlighted with global mining application case studies.

A significant problem in ultrafine particle classification is the significant amount of submicron particle by-pass to the coarse particle stream. In classifying cyclones, submicron particle by-pass to the underflow stream can be reduced by decreasing water recovery. Past studies have shown that a reduction can be realized when the feed solids concentration is increased or the apex diameter is reduced. However, both adjustments tend to increase the particle size cut point and negatively affect classification efficiency due to the impact on slurry rheology. The addition of a viscosity modifier to the feed stream of a classifying cyclone improved the classification performance and decreased the particle size cut point over a range of feed solids concentrations. The detailed test program investigated the use of the modifier in conjunction with varying apex diameters to identify conditions that minimize ultrafine by-pass. With small apex sizes, roping conditions were readily eliminated by the addition of viscosity modifiers. The addition of the modifier had no deleterious effect on froth flotation performance, which commonly serves as a downstream separation process. The fundamental and practical benefits of viscosity modifiers in classification processes are discussed in this publication.

Meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid(DMSA) was studied as an additive for thiosulfate leaching of gold. DMSA was added to solutionscomposed of either sodium thiosulfate or calcium thiosulfate and the solutions were tested for their ability to leach pure gold samples as well as a calcined gold ore from Barrick Gold Corp. Results showed prolonged leaching of pure gold samples when DMSA was added at a concentration of 5µM; however, higher concentrations were shown to inhibit leaching. Differential capacitance measurements of the interface indicated that DMSA adsorbed as a defective monolayer on the surface of gold at low concentrations and formed a more compact monolayer with increased concentration. It is proposed that a concentration of 5µM DMSA produces a defectivemonolayer on the surface that still allowsthe transport of oxidants to the underling metal while inhibiting the formation of polysulfide passive layers that arise fromdecomposed thiosulfate.The 5µM DMSA/CaS2O3 system was also studied using calcined ore. Results showed that the initial leaching rates in the presence of DMSA are lower than those obtained in thiosulfate alone. However, after 10h, prolonged leaching is again observed when DMSA is included.

"Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)was acquired over the Carajás Mineral Province, within the rainforests of the Amazon, which hosts the world’s largest Fe-ore deposit(Santos, 1986). Significant chemical weathering exists in this humid environment. PrevalentAu mineralization is thought to be generally associated with deformation zones in Archean schists.Radar data have proven to be very useful as an aid to geological mapping in the tropical rainforests of the Amazon Basin in Brazil. In these densely vegetated areas, a sense of regional structural trends is obtained as a con-sequence of the sensor/terrain geometry. The top forest canopy is the main terrain reflector of X-band radar energy, and consequently is the main terrain surface feature expressed in processed radar imagery. Radar is important for extending t,he continuity of mapped structural lineaments. Differential weathering is related to variations in radar image texture which is used to infer gross lithologic variations and relative age relationships of major rock units. Specifically, quartzites and banded iron formation are highlighted in the radar imagery due to their unique tonal and textural appearance, in contrast to schists, gneisses and metavolcanic rocks. As tropical areas are typically enveloped in cloud or mist, radar data are invaluable in providing information for logistical planning of field mapping activities."

Furnace run-outs can cause extended furnace downtime for repair, while leaks or more severe failures in the cooling system can lead to brick hydration or in severe cases, steam explosions. These incidents can result in lost production, damage to equipment, injuries and casualties. To prevent such incidents, reliable and accurate techniques to monitor the critical components of the furnace such as refractory lining, furnace structure, taphole integrity and main water circuits are required. This paper describes several advanced methods that have been developed to assess the condition of furnace integrity, refractory lining, tapholes and cooling water circuits.

Introduction The major development of industrial minerals in Manitoba has been in building materials. 'The building-stone industry is developed far beyond the needs of the Province, and the well known Tyndall limestone is marketed over a wide area throughout the other provinces to Canada. Similarly, gypsum and gypsum products are produced in excess of local requirements and are exported to adjacent provinces. The crushed-stone, sand and gravel, limestone, and lime industries are sufficiently developed to supply the needs of the Province and, notably in the case of lime and lime-stone, there is a surplus for export to the adjacent provinces and to the United States. The manufacture of common brick is well established, but for face-brick and other clay products the Province is dependent largely on importations. Production of silica-sand will increase as Canadian markets become available through recognition of the utility value of the Black Island sand as foundry-sand and for other purposes. There is some possibility of the export of feldspar, of lithium ore and concentrates, and perhaps of salt. A considerable part of the Province has not been seriously prospected for industrial minerals and it may be expected that, as time goes on, other deposits of non-metallic minerals will be discovered and opened up, especially as the prairie provinces become more industrialized. At the present time, there is some activity in the southern part of the Province based on gas and oil indications. Whatever may be the outcome of this work, it should yield valuable information concerning the geological structure of the area.

"Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. Dans le présent article, l’accent est mis sur une méthode novatrice de modélisation de la population à haute teneur par la simulation conditionnelle des volumes discrets d’or (pépites) au moyen de procédés marqués de Poisson et de Cox. La limite d’utilisation et d’autres manipulations ad hoc des données ne sont pas requises; toutefois, il faut une carte des intensités pour le processus ponctuel. "To comply with the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, the automotive industry is aiming to reduce weight and increase the power and efficiency of small displacement engines through the application of forced induction technologies. As an example, there are now several 2.0 litre turbocharged engines in production, producing in excess of 240 hp. To meet the need for improved fatigue properties in the engine blocks used in these high-output engines, a new water-cooled chill technology is under exploration at UBC in partnership with General Motors and Nemak. A series of experimental techniques were used to assess the capability of the new chill to extract heat from an A319 casting in the vicinity of the main bearing bulk head. The results show that this method has the potential to achieve a reduction in secondary dendrite arm spacing thus meeting the new microstructural specifications for these engines.INTRODUCTION The automotive industry is working to meet the stricter efficiency requirements laid out within the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations (Bastani, 2012; Cole, 1995; Mackay, 2011; Miller, 2000), while at the same time not sacrificing performance. One approach is to increase the use of lightweight materials, which leads to a decrease in the overall vehicle weight and fuel consumption (Cole, 1995; Mackay, 2011; Miller, 2000). Other approaches include smaller displacement engines and gas-electric hybrid drivetrains. However, one trend that is becoming clear, is a greater emphasis on force induction gasoline engines. This allows for weight reduction to be achieved with smaller displacement engines without sacrificing performance. One consequence of this approach is that the engine block materials are subject to higher in-service thermal and mechanical cyclic loads (Cole, 1995; Miller, 2011; Heysler, 2001) The fatigue properties of an alloy are strongly affected by a number of the, as-cast, microstructure features including, Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS), porosity and eutectic lamella spacing (including intermetallic ß-Al5FeSi platelets) (Mackay, 2010a; Mackay, 2010b; Viet-Duc, 2015; Casellas, 2005). It is generally accepted they can act as fatigue initiation sites and that a reduction in their size will result in an improvement in fatigue performance. For a given alloy chemistry, one of the key parameters affecting the length scale of all three is cooling rate (Mackay, 2000)."

"Occupational health programs and their role in improving the quality of working life in the mining industry are discussed. Attention is directed to some problems peculiar to the Canadian mining industry. Factors affecting program development are reviewed, as well as parameters affecting cost-benefit analyses.IntroductionThe quality of working life in the mining industry is a more important consideration than in many other industrial environments because of the very nature of the undertaking. It was a strange paradox of the 1960s that preventive maintenance programs for machinery and equipment were well accepted, whereas the concept of ""preventive people medicine"" was basically ignored. Fortunately, there seems to be a swing toward the development of occupational health programs in many sectors of the business community; however, there is a noticeable lack of consistency and uniformity for thought among the members of the mining industry. The blame for this lack o f progress in the occupational field cannot be entirely attributed to the industry, but must also rest with (for the most part) apathetic and inadequately trained physicians. This latter problem is slowly improving with the growing recognition that a well-planned and executed occupational health program may improve the quality of working life for mining employees and their families.There are a number of factors which relate to occupational health in mining, and its effect on working life quality. Included among these are:1. Community isolation.2. High accident risks.3. Occupational disease risks.4. Production demands and the state of the economy.5. Government regulatory requirements.6. Travel demands.These, and others, reflect on all levels of the mining industry. To examine how these factors can be moderated by an occupational health program, it is necessary to first review the rationale for such a program and some of the costs related to it."

"The present contribution examines, in some detail, what appear to be the three outstanding features of the field occurrence of the conformable ""pyritic"" deposits. These are their association with fragmental volcanic rocks (and derivatives), their occurrence in sediments of near-shore formation, and their highly variable structural associations.In a recent paper it has been suggested that two such ""pyritic"" de-posits in New Brunswick may have originated as marine concentrations of volcanic base metal and sulphur compounds, and that many of their present features are the result of diagenesis, folding, and regional metamorphism. This is now put for-ward as a general explanation for the particular class of deposit considered.Such deposits should, on this hypo-thesis, be regarded quite simply as an integral part of the particular geological environment in which they occur -as a normal, though minor, sedimentarry type developed, char-acteristically, in near-shore and shelf facies of intravolcanic units formed along the margins of eugeosynclines. They should not be considered -as, for example, is required by the re-placement theory -as later features simply superimposed on a geological situation to which they are genetically unrelated. Where they are associated with folds and other structures, this may be attributed, from one in-stance to another, to mechanical migration during folding, weaknesses induced by pre-existing sulphides, and, occasionally, to fortuitousness.In the light of this postulated origin, it is suggested that the first stages in regional prospecting for deposits of this particular class should be broadly palaeogeographical. Later phases of the search should then be directed to the delineation of sedimentary facies and, finally, to the investigation of geological structure."

The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

MiningWatch Canada is the only national independent civil society organization with an exclusive focus on mining in Canada and Canadian mining companies operations internationally. In 2005, MiningWatch Canada collaborated with other NGOs to develop the Framework for Responsible Mining: A Guide to Evolving Standards. The project was the result of a perceived need by NGOs and retailers, particularly from the jewellery sector, for a framework that would set out environmental, social, and governance standards for the minerals sector ?providing recommendations for retailers and others seeking to source or invest responsibly, as well as regulate and encourage responsible mining practices?. This paper is a reflection on the Framework that examines key areas of concern and notes where the industry norms and expectations of civil society have evolved. The paper focuses on developments in social issues related to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, new initiatives associated with financial transparency, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The environmental components of the Framework that are revisited are waste management, biodiversity, energy and climate change, environmental assessment, mine closure, mercury and seabed mining.

In the late 1960's concerns about the natural environment reached high levels within North America and provided activists with suitable platforms for exerting influence over the general public and politicians. In response a host of regulatory mechanisms were developed, statutes, voluntary measures, land grants, codes of practices etc. Emerging environmental awareness from the era provided impetus for rapid technological change that encompassed all industries, especially the base metal business. The resulting clean up impacted all aspects of copper production, dealing with issues such as waste disposal, water and air quality with specific impact on emissions of sulfur dioxide and particulate. This paper provides a perspective of these changes reviewing the macro-economic impact of environmental movement in mining with its specific implications to the copper smelting industry. The fundamental challenges that were faced by the old, but capital-intensive North American plants and the approaches taken to deal with the changing times are reviewed with special emphasis on the conceptual approach to smelter S02 abatement and different paths taken in the USA and Canada. The role of economics, sustainable R&D and presence of technical infrastructure that facilitated the change process is elucidated, and speculations are made about the future state of pyrometallurgy and the natural environment. The manufacture of sulphuric acid from the off-gas of pyrometallurgical processes in the production of heavy metals is one of the common methods of effective recycling of sulfuric anhydrite. The new Impact-Inertial Devices with the rectangular contact channels (IIRCh) and the internal circulation of liquid allow the injection of an absorber into the phase's interactive cell by utilizing the gas stream energy and by this way increasing the sulphuric acid yield and reducing the power consumption. These devices have the following advantages: simplicity of design, smaller size, low capital expenses, absence of irrigating system, high operational reliability, simultaneous cleaning of solid, gaseous and liquid impurities and also cooling of gases etc. The IIRCh efficiency is almost 18 % higher and they require 1.3-2 times lower energy when compared with Venturi Absorbers. Also the elevation of spraying nozzles or injectors is 1.5 times lower in the IIRCh case.

In December 1977, a large pillar was removed by blasthole mining methods at lnco's Creighton No. 3 mine. Although the 2,363.000-ton blast was not a size record for a single underground blast at Inco, it did represent a significant departure from conventional blasthole mining. In terms of the application of nominal 6-inch-diameter boreholes underground, coupled with bulk slurry explosives, the magnitude of the blast is considered a first and very important development. The application of large-diameter boreholes in underground operations was first tried successfully in 1973. Since that time over 13/4 million feet have been drilled in this adaptation of an open-pit technique to underground operations. The blast, which required 708 holes, totalling 131,500 feet of drilling, was loaded in a six-week period, using special slurry handling techniques developed jointly by Inco and CIL. Inco operating and engineering personnel consider this application of large boreholes and slurry explosives for blasthole mining a very important milestone in modern mining technology.

"The mining industry may have survived the October 28 federal budget relatively unscathed, but the same certainly cannot be said of the petroleum sector-and many mining men are left wondering if their industry will be the next one to be singled out for special attention, as federal and provincial governments seek additional revenues and pursue nationalistic or provincial policies.Higher taxes, higher prices, a potpourri of ""incentives"", and a -""Canadianization"" policy mark the principal features of the new National Energy Program released by the government along with Finance Minister MacEachen's budget address.This month, Tax Notes examines the federal budget. with appropriate emphasis on the National Energy Program and its possible future implications forthe Canadian resource industries.IntroductionMost of the Canadian mining industry (tar sands miners excepted) heaved a sigh of relief on the evening of October 28, 1980, as Finance Minister MacEachen confounded the prophets in his budget address by not raising personal or corporation taxes and by making only relatively modest changes in the general tax system. Instead, he concentrated on a sweeping new energy policy. Unfortunately for that important sector of Canada's mining industry which is involved in mining the country's vast tar sands reserves, either now or in the future, the National Energy Program that was introduced along with the budget 'has serious implications."

A research effort has been undertaken, under WSIB sponsorship, to characterize the support capabilities of conventional and innovative spray-on lining materials for mitigating dynamic failure effects created by simulated rockbursts. Conventional spray support media, such as shotcrete and fibrecrete linings, and a variety of new spray-on lining materials (TSL?s), typically polymer-type thin coatings, were subjected to simulated rockburst influence. For baseline comparison, conventional rockbolt and boltand- mesh support products were also evaluated. Observation of lining performance was undertaken through completion of field scale support and rock detonation trials. Controlled blasting tests were conducted at the Queen?s University Explosives Laboratory to examine the effectiveness of the variety of surface coating agents for modifying dynamic rock spalling processes. All tests were performed upon largely undisturbed and homogeneous rock materials in highly repeatable fashion. Both conventional and innovative TSL-type surface lining materials were subjected to ?rockburst? exposure in rigorously-controlled blast trials. All blasts were observed seismically and photographically to provide detailed information concerning rock motion, surface fracturing, ejected fragment motion and support liner survivability characteristics. These material comparison trials were performed to assess the relative effectiveness of a wide range of currently-available area support techniques for suppressing hazards associated with dynamic rock ejection. The results of this study validates that thin, sprayon linings may be equally as effective, and often better, than conventional support materials at mitigating rockburst or like damage in highly stressed mine environments.

"Option pricing is used in finance for valuing options to buy (or sell) shares at some future date because it provides a convenient framework for quantifying values subject to uncertainty. As one of the main sources of uncertainty in mining is the price (sales) of the metal, this approach can also be used for valuing mining projects.The first part of this paper reviews options and option pricing; the second part presents the approach developed by Brennan and Schwartz (1985) for using option pricing to value natural resources. Several applications of this methodology have been published; these are described. From a mining point of view, the assumptions made by Brennan and Schwartz are too simplistic. The weaknesses are discussed with a view to improving an apparently promising new way of assessing the value of projects. IntroductionThe collapse of the British merchant banking group, Barings, has highlighted the risks that can be incurred by speculators and arbitragers in the futures and options markets. But this negative attention on futures and options should not make us forget their positive aspects. They can provide producers and consumers of metals with more predictable sales prices. The introduction of the new traded average price options, TAPOS, by the London Metal Exchange in January 1997 is a response to this need. Equally important, the theory that the finance industry has developed for valuing options provides an interesting framework for valuing mineral projects as well. While this paper was being revised, the South African gold mining house, JCI, announced that it was using a methodology based on option pricing for valuing the mineral rights to deeplevel gold resources (see Box 1)."

This paper deals with the large iron ore concentrating plant owned by the Iron Ore Company of Canada. The plant is part of the Carol Project, which is being developed in the Wabush area of western Labrador. The mining and milling operations were officially opened in July of this year. The handling of fine material has always been considered a serious operational problem. The crushing, grinding and sizing of 50,000 tons of iron ore per day, in a dry state, could present sizeable problems in maintenance and orderliness. The operation, as a whole, embraces many recent developments in the iron ore industry. Mining operations include the latest techniques of jet piercing and blasting. Primary crushing involves a single crusher, which handles the complete production. Grinding of the ore includes the latest concepts of dry autogenous grinding in air-swept mills. The actual concentration of the ore is per-formed, in the wet state, by the use of spiral concentrators, with provision for possible flotation or magnetic separation, if required. The upgraded concentrates are either stored or pelletized, prior to shipment by rail to Seven Islands.
