"In projects involving resource development and plant optimization, the use of in-mine geophysics can deliver considerable benefit. The value proposition lies in using very high resolution downhole measurements to model process-plant outcomes. The calibration procedure used to convert in-situ physical properties into process engineering parameters is illustrated using two iron ore projects. Data correction was related either to orebody structure or mineral formation. The deliverable from this approach is a series of high-definition sections indicating the variability of ore delivered to a front-end separation plant and parameters for mine scheduling and stockpile design needed for maximum product yield.RÉSUMÉ Dans des projets de développement des ressources et d’optimisation de l’usine, l’utilisation de la géophysique minière peut engendrer des bénéfices considérables. La valeur de la proposition réside dans l’utilisation de diagraphies à très haute résolution afin de modéliser les résultats de l’usine de traitement. La procédure d’étalonnage utilisée pour convertir les propriétés physiques in situ en des paramètres d’ingénierie de procédés est illustrée en se basant sur deux projets de minerai de fer. In this paper a possible methodology to supplement a predictive control approach is reported. The benefits deriving from the application of a predictive control on complex buildings lay on its capability of adapting in advance to the conditioning needs of indoor environments. In fact, the mere reactive control is usually affected by response delays, mainly determined by latency intrinsic in systems and by the massive nature of buildings, which slows down their response to changeable inputs. Hence, systems are too often solicited at their maximum power to recover against comfort deficiencies, and high consumptions are had. This paper reports on the application of a predictive approach to the Passeig de Gracia (PdG) metro station in Barcelona, which is a considerably high energy demanding building and where ventilation systems are used to control both comfort and air quality. Although an extensive simulation for estimating energy savings obtainable through that approach is currently ongoing, in this paper we detail the several components which make up a ?predictive control framework? and we perform a preliminary demonstrative simulation. In particular, the whole setup is formed by: a detailed model of PdG, which simulates the station?s ?real state?; a control model, which optimizes a given cost-function; probabilistic predictive models to infer the future state of the systems, given the assumptions on the control actions by the control module. The outcomes of this paper show that the procedure is applicable and preliminary results over a short simulation horizon of half a day are reported.

"Shales are highly anisotropic in their mechanical behavior. The strength ( ??1) of anisotropic shales depends not only on the magnitude of the other two principal stresses ( ??2, ??3), but also on the bedding plane orientations (?) relative to the principal stresses. In this study, the role of the intermediate stress ( ??2) on the strength of shale is evaluated using new data from triaxial compression and extension tests. To understand the failure behavior of shales, we have carried out triaxial compression tests ( ??1 > ??2 = ??3) on two organic rich mudstones, at different confining stresses and loading angles. We first fit the triaxial compression data with Jaeger’s plane-of-weakness model, and find that the model is able to represent the strength behavior of anisotropic shales reasonably well. We then carried out five triaxial extension tests ( ??1 = ??2 > ??3) for a high strength-anisotropy shale, and two extension tests for a low strength-anisotropy shale. Results from the compression and extension tests for failure along the weak plane shows that the role of ??2 is not significant for weak plane failure. However, for the low strength-anisotropy shale, the failure strength of the intact rock (i.e., at ??= 0o and 90o) for compression and extension tests were significantly different. This indicates that for intact rock failure, the role of ??2 is important and cannot be ignored.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, various researchers have studied the roles of ??2 for failure of isotropic rocks. (Mogi, 1967 and 2007; Colmenares and Zoback, 2002; Al-Ajmi and Zimmerman, 2005 and 2006; Haimson, 2009; Ma and Haimson, 2012). The findings from these studies show that the effect of ??2 on the strength of isotropic rocks is generally significant, and cannot be ignored.Since the role of ??2 in the failure of isotropic rocks was recognized, other researchers attempted to extend some of these isotropic failure criteria to anisotropic rocks, but with limited success (e.g., Tiwari & Rao, 2007; Singh et al., 1998; Zhang and Zhu, 2007; Pei, 2008). Smith and Cheatham (1980), on the other hand, conducted true-triaxial experiments on the Green River Shale and used a J2-I1 type relationship to predict the strength behavior, but without considering the effect of the three-dimensional orientation of the weak plane on strength. Therefore, unlike for the case of isotropic rocks, additional studies need to be done to determine the role of 2 on the failure of anisotropic rocks."

This paper will examine the challenges involved in ventilating and cooling South African mines, with particular emphasis on solutions to the issues of heat (generally associated with depth), mechanization and energy efficiency. Comparisons will be made with other international mining areas. Some of the deepest mines in the world are to be found in the South African goldfields. The Mponeng mine is approaching 4,000 m below surface, with virgin rock temperatures (VRT) of between 60°C and 70°C. Mining at these depths has only been possible with the use of large refrigeration plants supplying cold air, water and ice to the workings. In the Bushveld Igneous Complex, where most of South Africa?s platinum mines are located, similar VRTs are being experienced at significantly shallower depths. This is due to the different geothermal properties of the host rock between the two areas. Existing mines are being forced to go deeper and new underground mines are being planned and constructed in other areas with widely differing thermal conditions. South African metal mining has traditionally been labour intensive for historical reasons as well as for the narrow tabular nature of many ore bodies. Due to cost pressures and labour problems, some mines have been investigating the possibility of using mechanized equipment, both diesel and electric, to increase production and to improve efficiency. Studies have been carried out to determine the effect of the additional equipment on the overall ventilation system and some of the conclusions are discussed. The use of diesel equipment adds heat and pollutants to the ventilation air but, although electrical equipment has a lesser effect on the ventilation systems, it is generally less favoured due to claims of lower flexibility/manoeuvrability. Mechanization holds the promise of more concentrated mining activities but, with higher localized ventilation and cooling needs. Systems which will control the provision of air and cooling more effectively are required and are being implemented. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the South African economy experienced significant growth which was not matched by the growth in infrastructure. Consequently, at present there is a shortage of electricity generation capacity which affects large industrial consumers, including mines. Increasing levels of heat and mechanization will require more electrical energy for ventilation and cooling. There are many initiatives underway to save power or to shift consumption to periods of national low demand and these will be described.

"To minimise mine shaft maintenance over the long-term, some potash mine shaft sinking projects have required the provision of a continuous fully welded waterproof steel liner over a substantial depth to achieve zero water ingress. This brings many challenges, including the implementation of a bottom-up construction sequence incorporating extensive waterproof welding and how to ensure the integrity of the welded liner when subject to substantial temperature fluctuations that are likely to occur with a composite steel-concrete liner placed within an artificially frozen shaft excavation. This paper highlights the key challenges and discusses multiple mitigation measures including vertical shaft movement joints and a combined structural-thermal analysis approach. INTRODUCTION Whilst the application of combined steel and concrete shaft liners using a fully welded steel liner is not new and has been used in several previous projects, most notably at Lanigan (Storck, 1968 & Roesner, 1980), recently the need to provide a continuously welded steel waterproof liner for over 800 m length of shaft for a potash mine has been considered. The need for a fully continuous welded steel liner arises from the perceived benefits of providing a fully dry shaft environment to; increase the life expectancy of the shaft; reduce routine maintenance particularly combatting salt accretion and minimising wash down practices; and improve long-term ground stability by preventing salt dissolution. Whereas previous projects have employed discontinuous sections of steel liner, when a fully continuous liner is employed longitudinal shaft strains from thermal changes result in significant deformations that must be either explicitly accommodated or resisted. Note, these thermal vertical expansion forces are more than capable of lifting the shaft collar and head frame structures should they be fixed in place. Typically, shafts are designed to resist vertical forces (collar loads and self-weight) by creating mechanical interlock with the adjacent ground. In competent rock this occurs incrementally with the construction of the shaft liner, and occasional hitch/crib structures are constructed as intermediate foundations to guarantee the transfer of vertical forces at distinct horizons. Usually this means cribs are constructed at first rock head, above the station level, and at the sump, although sometimes additional cribs are formed when entering and exiting weak strata or when a change in shaft liner construction is required."

Since the 14th CMMI conference, held in Edinburgh in 1990, at which a paper was presented by the author (Willis, 1990) reviewing the role of integrating new technology as a survival strategy for South African gold mines, considerable change has occurred in the South African mining industry. This paper reviews the current state of the industry and provides an update on the technologies discussed ten years ago. It reviews available technology and provides a broad economic assessment of these technologies if they were to be introduced in an integrated mining system with a focus on deep level mining below 3000 m. It also reviews possible future technologies currently being researched and developed by CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek).

This growing dependence of Canada upon foreign mineral commodities, just referred to, applies particularly in the direction of the United States. There is, in fact, no more significant feature of Canada's mineral trade than the manner in which it affects the Dominion's commercial standing with that country. Our heavy adverse balance of trade with the United States is perhaps not a matter of such wide concern or frequent comment as was the case two or three years ago. It is, of course, a well-known fact that the Dominion each year buys from the States a volume of goods to a value enormously in excess of our sales to that country. And it has come to be accepted as a ?normal, though not altogether satisfactory, feature of our international commerce that a huge portion of the bill incurred by our American purchases must be met, not by our American sales, but by the proceeds of our sales to other countries, not-ably Great Britain. It is a three-cornered situation in which our trading deficit with the United States is covered largely by our trading surplus with the United Kingdom. In this situation the mineral trade plays a remarkable part. If one delves into the details of our transactions with the United States it will be found that, in one sense, the mineral trade is entirely responsible for the huge annual balance against the Dominion. In fact, Canada gets decidedly better than an even break on Canadian American trade, if one leaves out of account the three mineral groups, "iron and steel", "non- metallic minerals", and "non-ferrous metals".

Having real-time data of blast furnace burden profile with respect to burden height and temperature is critical to making informed decisions on blast furnace operation. Given the high temperature and gaseous environment within the blast furnace shaft, traditional instrumentation has been limited at providing the level of real-time feedback information needed to optimize blast furnace operations. Infrared thermal imagery technology provides non-contact temperature measurement across the entire burden profile, allowing for better understanding of the dynamic movement of the burden within the blast furnace shaft. This technology increases blast furnace performance by improving the decision-making process for hour by hour operations. This paper will discuss the development of incorporating infrared thermal imagery technology into the operating strategy of a lead blast furnace.

"With the globalization of the mining industry, many companies are now seeking to invest in underground diamond mines, with the purchase of small diamond pipes being seen as particularly attractive. However, recent experiences in South Africa have shown that many projects fail due to a lack of awareness of the hazards associated with diamond mining. In this paper three significant hazards are dealt with — mud rushes, block crushing, and implementation of an inappropriate mining method. Measures that assist in the prevention of these three hazards are given.IntroductionFor over a hundred years, South Africa has been seen as the centre of the diamond mining industry, possibly having the largest number of operational underground diamond mines in the world. Despite the fact that this industry has been dominated by large mines of De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, many small underground mines have operated profitably for a number of years, exploiting diamondiferous fissures and pipes. In the last decade there has been renewed interest in these small operations from international companies. However, many of these projects have not realized their full potential owing to a lack of appreciation of the hazards inherent in the operation of a diamond mine.Hazards Associated with Diamond MiningIn the development of a diamond mine, the mining company must be aware of the hazards associated with diamond mining. There are three main hazards: (1) mud rushes; (2) block crushing; and (3) selection of an inappropriate mining method (not a natural hazard, but a planning induced hazard). "The Whitewood Mine near Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Approximately 2 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal is supplied annually to the Wabamun Generating Plant. A high water table, high groundwater pressure, and structural folds contribute to stability problems in the fine-grained overburden. Significant increases in coal recovery have been achieved in recent years through improvements in water management and mining methods. Agricultural capability of the post-mining landscape has also been improved following the completion of mining/ reclamation activities. Introduction The Whitewood Mine, located to the north of Lake Wabamun and seventy kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Figure 1 shows the location of the Whitewood Mine with respect to the city of Edmonton. The mine presently supplies two million tonnes annually of sub-bituminous ""C"" coal to the 582-megawatt Wabamun Generating Plant located adjacent to the mine. The area is characterized by a high water table-, rolling coal seams and an overburden that consists of muskeg, clay and various sedimentary layers of sand, gravel and fine-grained sandstone. These distinctive characteristics require careful attention in order to not only meet the coal delivery requirements of the Wabamun Generating Plant but also to do so economically. A fast-flow reactor mass spectrometer has been utilized to investigate the reactions of gas-phase gold cluster anions with CO and oxygen. Addition of CO to Aun - produces species of the form Au(CO)m -, where m = 2-5. However, CO does not bind to Au2 - or Au3 -. With oxygen addition in the cluster source, gold oxide species with both molecular and atomized oxygen are produced. The addition of carbon monoxide to these preoxidized gold cluster anions reveals that select species with 1, 2, and 3 gold atoms participate in the oxidation reaction to produce CO2. Bimolecular rate constants for the reactions between these species and CO are also discussed.

For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the history of the western Provinces-Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta-as regards our natural resources, a few words of explanation may be in order before taking up the consideration of the Mines Act of 1930. In 1867, The British North America Act was passed by the Imperial Parliament. That Act, which is our constitution, created a union between the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Upper and Lower Canada (now known as Ontario and Quebec respectively) under the name of the Dominion of Canada. Provision was made therein for embracing other parts of Canada from time to time. That portion of Canada which today comprises the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta and the lands to the north of them, was then known as Ruperts Land and the North West Territory. In the year 1670, King Charles II had granted by Letters Patent to Prince Rupert and his associates, known as ?The Governor & Company of Gentlemen Adventurers of England, Trading into Hudson's Bay?, commonly known as the Hudson's Bay Company, the lands and territories therein described, being roughly all the lands adjacent to and west of Hudson's bay; also the gold and silver to be found or discovered therein and other rights as more fully described in said Letters Patent. The land so granted was called 'Ruperts Land'.

Barrick has had 6 autoclaves in operation at the Goldstrike Mine, North of Carlin Nevada, since 1993. The 6 autoclaves operate in parallel, processing slurry of gold ore. The gold in the ore is predominantly associated with, and encapsulated by, sulphide minerals. It is necessary to oxidize at least 90% of the sulphide mineral before the gold can be concentrated using a cyanide/carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit. Sulphide oxidation chemical reactions occurring in the autoclaves are exothermic; however, the sulphide content in the ore is not high enough to operate the autoclaves in an auto-thermal mode. Heat from steam is added to the first 2 of 5 autoclave compartments to initiate the sulphide oxidation reactions. The steam used to heat the autoclaves is supplied by three boilers, which are fuelled with propane gas. The completion of a few operations and maintenance projects in the last 2 years has resulted in a 50% reduction in propane energy requirements. The autoclave operating temperatures were minimized. Excess oxygen addition was held as low as possible. The material of construction for the compartment walls inside the autoclaves was changed from brick to Titanium metal. And, the speed of the autoclave slurry agitators was increased. All of these activities had an impact on the propane energy requirements of the autoclaves. Presented below is a description of the autoclave systems, and a discussion of how the energy needs were reduced, resulting in significant operating cost savings.

"The geometry of the terrain topography before and after the failure are the essential factors for analyzing a landslide and for the design of remedial works. This paper presents a method to determine these factors, considering that the determination of the slide surface profile is difficult and costly using traditional methods and the pre-slide topography data is often not available. The presented method to locate the 3-dimensional geometry of the slide surface is based upon determining the slide surface in 2- dimensional vertical sections. This method utilizes post-slide topography of the area to determine the pre-slide topography and uses equations to estimate the pre-slide situation using a statistical process applied to points located on the sliding mass. This method is tested on the Maskun landslide in Iran. The results indicate the applicability of the proposed method to obtain the key factors for the back analysis of a landslide in a cost effective manner.INTRODUCTIONProbably the most reliable method of determining the strength of soil and rock mass is to back analyze a failed or failing slope (Caia et al. 2007; Wyllie & Mah, 2004). This method is used in geotechnics for estimating geotechnical parameters of the rock and soil mass (Sakurai et al., 2003; Frayssines and Hantz, 2009; Cepuritis et al. 2010), but it requires that the failure mode is well established and that there is complete and precise information available on the slide surface and the sliding mass (Sjöberg, 1996). Measurement of the slope profile before failure provides the basic information required for a back analysis (Hock & Bray, 1981). The post-slide topography is another key factor. The back analysis process for determining the actual strength parameters of soil or a decomposed rock mass after a landslide requires knowledge of the sliding mass geometry, both before and after the sliding event. Many studies are reported in the literature about the application of back analysis for determining geotechnical and geomechanical parameters of rock and soil mass (Sakurai et al., 2003; Cepuritis et al. 2010; Frayssines and Hantz, 2009, Hussain and Stark, 2011), but they generally present little information about the geometry of the slide surface, and the weight of rock and soil mass that slid, although these factors are the most important parameters for back analysis process. Liang and Xue-song (2012) determined the slip surface having the minimum factor of safety (called critical slip surface in deterministic analysis of slopes) and the slip surface with the minimum reliability index (called critical reliability slip surface), but they have not considered the actual profile and geometry of the slide surface. Rocscience (2013) proposes the back analysis option in the Slide software for slope stability study, but it requires an imposed slide surface as input; alternatively, one can estimate by a finite element analysis the surface with the minimum factor of safety. However, this estimated surface is very likely different from the actual sliding surface, considering the uncertainties in input data of the finite element method."

According to the principle of similarity, the physical and chemical configurations of a system can be defined by ratios of magnitudes within the system and do not de-pend on the size or nature of units of measurement. In the present work, the similarity principle was utilized in evaluating the reducibility of various iron ores in a rotary batch furnace under optimum operating conditions. It was then used successfully to extrapolate the results, first to the operation of a 20-ft. pilot-plant kiln and then to an industrial-size 80-ft. kiln. By means of this systematic analysis of kiln operation, it was possible to increase the production capacity of the kiln considerably. T HE kilns used by the Strategic-Udy process for the partial reduction of iron ores are, in most aspects, similar to conventional calcining kilns. THE PRESIDENT (DR. C. B. KINGSTON, member C.l.M.M.) expressed regret that neither of the authors of the paper was able to be present to submit the paper in person. In their absence, it would be introduced formally from the Chair. It was a clear, straightforward account of a fine piece of shaft sinking, cleverly conceived and boldly executed. He referred briefly to the distribution and nature of the Dome ore-bodies and stated that, for both the miner and the metallurgist, the mine had provided a wide range of problems of unusual interest. Discussion on the paper was then invited. MR. THOMAS PRYOR said the paper was most opportune, because the subject of internal shafts did not appear to be fully treated in current mining literature. Many members were not familiar with Canadian gold deposits and it would be of interest if the authors could give a brief description of the location of the ere deposits of the Dome mine. This information would doubtless explain why a new internal shaft was needed in a position which required such an exceptionally long cross-cut to connect it to the main hoisting shaft to surface. It would also add to the value of the paper if the authors would give some idea of the duty expected of the new shaft in terms of tons of rock hoisted and of trips engaged in the transport of men and materials, and it would be helpful if figures could be given of the total capital cost of the hoists and subsidiary excavations at the shaft top, and of the cost per foot for sinking and lining the shaft below the collar. Turning to details of the paper, one was favourably impressed by the care given to the provision of a good travelling way for men in the main cross-cut, as shown in Figure 1. It was by no means always that one could walk in comfort and safety in a working where there was a 20-in. ventilating pipe in the roof.

"The synthesis of large scorodite particles in non-ferrous metallurgical industries usually requires a high-cost operation involving heating and high-pressure autoclaving. To overcome these obstacles, an atmospheric-pressure process for scorodite synthesis (DMSP®) was developed, in which ferrous ions were oxidized by oxygen gas in the presence of pentavalent arsenic ions. This process gives scorodite of good crystallinity with particle sizes as large as 15-20 µm. The solutions used for scorodite synthesis in the DMSP® are prepared from various residues containing arsenic from non-ferrous smelters. The solutions may be contaminated with Cu, Sb, and Bi, for example, and therefore the effects of such impurities on the formation of crystalline scorodite need to be investigated. In this study, the effects of Cu, Sb, and Bi contaminants on the formation behaviors of scorodite particles in the DMSP® were investigated systematically.INTRODUCTIONThe synthesis of crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) is a suitable method for arsenic (As) stabilization and storage of As-containing by-products such as flue gas dusts in non-ferrous smelters. It is expected that the formation of large, highly-crystalline scorodite particles would be an ideal method for avoiding the release of arsenic to the environment. Generally, autoclave methods under pressurized oxidation conditions at temperatures above 100°C have been used for the formation of arsenic minerals such as scorodite. However, the autoclave method requires sealed vessels that are resistant to high pressure, heat and acids. This process is also unfavorable on account of the high construction expenses, and high running costs as a result of vapor heat loss. Processes for synthesizing scorodite under atmospheric conditions at temperatures below 100°C which do not need an autoclave have therefore been extensively investigated (Demopoulos, Droppert, & VanWeert, 1994; Demopoulos, 1996; Demopoulos, Lagno, Wang, & Singhania, 2003; Droppert, Demopoulos, & Harris, 1996; Filippou & Demopoulos, 1997).Recently, Fujita et al. (Fujita, Taguchi, Abumiya, Matsumoto, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2008a, 2008b, 2009; Fujita, Taguchi, Kubo, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2009; Fujita, Taguchi, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2009) developed a new method for producing large scorodite crystalline particles with improved filtration and washability properties at normal atmospheric pressure and temperatures below 100°C. In the new method, oxygen gas (O2) is blown into solutions containing a high concentration of arsenic ions (As(V)) and ferrous ions (Fe(II)). The Fe(II) ions were subsequently oxidized to ferric ions (Fe(III)), resulting in the formation of large scorodite particles. High supersaturation of solutes such as Fe(III) will result in excessive nucleation, and the formation of poorly crystalline phases. The scorodite formation must therefore be conducted in a manner that avoids the critical supersaturation level being exceeded. It is supposed that the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) by O2 gas in the new method suppressed the supersaturation of Fe(III) during scorodite formation. The low Fe(III) supersaturation resulted in formations of highly crystalline scorodite particles of size of around 20 µm. In June 2008, based on the developed process described above, DOWA began experiments to verify the industrial capability of a plant with a capacity of 30 MT/month of As. It was successfully proven that it is possible to produce crystalline scorodite industrially on a commercial scale. This process was named and trademarked as DMSP® (Kubo, Abumiya, & Matsumoto, 2010)."

"Maximizing the value of each tonne of processed ore is the goal for all operations. Cyanidation processing of gold-copper ores has been challenging since its first use in 1889. The current practice treats a bleed or the total flow of mill solution to recover copper as copper sulfide (by sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening), or to recover the cyanide (by acidification-volatilization neutralization). The process presented uses the adsorption of copper cyanide by carbon and the selective elution of copper from carbon to concentrate copper into a smaller stream. Copper contained in the smaller stream is precipitated as copper cyanide.RÉSUMÉ Toutes les exploitations ont pour objectif commun d’optimiser la valeur de chaque tonne de minerai traité. Depuis sa première utilisation en 1889, la méthode de traitement par cyanuration des minerais aurifère et cuprifère s’est révélée complexe. Le cuivre contenu dans ce plus petit jet est précipité sous forme de cyanure de cuivre.INTRODUCTIONProcessing gold-copper ores by cyanidation has been a cost-control challenge since the cyanidation process was first used in 1889. Copper cyanide is stable only in the cuprous state, not the cupric. This factor results in the oxidation of a mole of cyanide per mole of nonchalcocite copper extracted. Each mole of copper extracted forms a cyanide complex with a minimum of 3 mol of cyanide. This cyanide-to-copper mole ratio is required to dissolve gold. The oxidation of cyanide and copper complexation with cyanide results in high cyanide consumption for copper-gold ores, which is a significant operating cost.One challenge in processing gold-copper ore is the cost of cyanide related to the extraction of copper. Processing 10,000 t/d of ore containing 1,000 mg/kg copper and 10% copper extraction yields 1,000 kg/d of copper. Currently, processes to remove copper from cyanide leach solution treat either the total flow of the barren or a bleed of the barren. The two processes used for copper-gold ores are sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening (SART), which produces a copper sulfide product for sale; and acidification- volatilization-neutralization (AVR), which recovers the cyanide from a gas and produces a low–cyanide content solution. This low–cyanide content solution can be recycled to the process or might require additional treatment before being disposed from the operation."

Abstract A brief history of the electric arc furnace process of steel-making is given. The greater relative importance of this method of steel manufacture to the Canadian steel industry, as compared with its importance in the steel industry of the United States, is shown. The scope of the process is outlined and brief mention is made of the difficulty of obtaining melting stock low in alloy content. The physical chemistry of steel-making is discussed at length in simple terms, with emphasis on oxidation, de-oxidation, and the role of hydrogen. Carbide-type and silicon-type slags are described and the particular usefulness of each is outlined. The importance of various factors in the melting practice is evaluated on the basis of practical experience. Introduction Although electric furnace steels constitute only a small portion of the total weight of steel used in industrial operations, their importance is relatively much greater than is indicated by comparative tonnage figures. Tool steels, which are vital to all industry, are made almost exclusively by the basic electric arc furnace process, as are stainless steels, valve steels, and the higher alloy types of the class usually referred to as "alloy steels'. For many applications where steel other than electric furnace quality is often used, and when first cost is secondary to performance in service, the extra steel cost of electric furnace quality material is usually returned with interest by consistently longer service life. The electric furnace is pre-eminent in the quality alloy steel field because of the control that may be exercised over conditions of oxidation, de-oxidation, and temperature, the fundamental operations in steel making.

Anglovaal Minerals acquired the Nkana slag dump from Zambia Consolidated Copper mines (ZCCM) in 1998 and embarked on an ambitious project to pioneer the recovery of cobalt from slag using DC smelting technology. Anglovaal Research Laboratories performed initial pioneering smelting tests in a 250 kW DC furnace over a 3-year period before engaging Mintek for three piloting campaigns at the 1.5 MW level. Mintek had previously developed a reductive smelting process, patented in 1995, using a DC arc furnace for the recovery of cobalt from slags. The results of the pilot-plant test campaigns were used as the basis for engineering the commercial 40 MW operation installed at Chambishi Metals plc in Zambia in 2001. This paper traces the development of understanding of the metallurgical fundamentals ultimately used to predict furnace performance, reviews some of the extreme technical challenges faced, how solutions were identified and highlights some of the critical issues identified during piloting and how these impacted both positively and negatively on the final commercial operation.
