This paper is an attempt to place Canadian Precambrian volcanogenic deposits in perspective, by examining and compiling data regarding certain neglected fundamentals of size, grade, value, frequency distribution and spatial density. The discovery roles played by various exploration methods are compared and contrasted, and. using empirical methods, the probabilities of discovery are discussed, combined with the use of an effective 'cost-per-target' program. From these basic observations, realistic exploration judgments may be made. Using similar methodology, this format may be applied to other types of deposits. Precambrian volcanogenic deposits occur in a natural geometric progression in size. They number 110, of which 70% are pre-producers, producers or past-producers. These deposits are bonanzas and generally have a 'net pre-smelter' value of between $43 and $62 per ton. The statistically typical deposit is that which occupies the modal position, has 400,000 tons of ore, a value of $20 million and occurs with a frequency of 40%. A median deposit has 1.4 million tons of ore, a value of $70 million and occurs with a frequency of 15%. An upper-decile deposit ha s 13.3 million tons of ore. a value of $750 million and occurs with a frequency of 6.5%. The major, mid-upper-decile deposits have a minimum of 50 million tons of ore, a value of $3 billion and occur with a frequency of 4%. Five major volcanogenic deposits occur in the Precambrian and account for 54% of production. This contrasts with 55 deposits (all below the median) which account for 3.9% of production.

The presence of an alpha case on titanium parts produced by investment casting is problematic and has to be eliminated. The traditional techniques for the evaluation of its thickness are metallographic measurements and micro-hardness profiles. To obtain a better understanding of how the alpha case is formed with the underlying objective of limiting its depth, the present study proposes to characterize the microstructure and the chemical composition of the alpha case. Electron microprobe analyzer (EMPA) linescans were used to quantify the oxygen and substitutional elements that come from the mould and promote the alpha case formation. The chemical profiles were correlated with metallographic and microhardness measurements. For microstructure, optical microscopy (etched and polarized light analysis) was used. For phase analysis, samples were mechanically polished step by step and analysed using X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Furthermore, surface analysis techniques such as XPS and Auger Microscopy were evaluated but results were found to be inconclusive because the formation of the oxide layer was faster than its ablation and the matrix could thus not be analysed. The alpha case was observed on a Ti-6Al-4V step block casting.

"The Bayer process involves the digestion of bauxite in caustic liquors at high temperature and pressure. Typically the digestion section of the plant involves the heating of liquors up to the digestion temperature followed by flashing of the digestion product to atmospheric pressure with the flashed steam used to pre-heat the incoming cold slurry. Despite the heat recovery, the digestion process is a high consumer of energy. The application of tube digestion technology in such plants has resulted in significant improvements in refinery energy efficiency with associated benefits of process simplification and refinery flow sheet capital cost reduction. This paper reviews the potential application of this technology to other metals within the non-ferrous industry.THE BAYER PROCESSA typical Bayer flow sheet is shown in Figure 1. The raw feed material bauxite (containing aluminium hydroxide as gibbsite Al(OH)3 and boehmite AlO(OH)) is digested in caustic liquors (caustic soda is the solvent) at high temperature and pressure. This process extracts the alumina and silica and any carbon present on the ore. The slurry is then flashed down to atmospheric condition allowing for heat recovery from the flashed vapour and producing slurry supersaturated in alumina.Following the digestion process the mud is removed via thickening and then pressure filtration to remove fine particulate and produce a clarified liquor with dissolved alumina in solution. The resulting pregnant liquor is then cooled allowing the alumina in solution to precipitate as aluminium trihydrate Al(OH)3. The precipitated hydrate is then filtered and washed and classified into fine and coarse fractions. The fine material is returned to the precipitation process as seed while the coarse fraction is calcined at high temperature to produce alumina. The filtrate from the filtration process (spent liquor) is then heated by the incoming pregnant liquor before being fed to an evaporation process which produced the strong caustic liquor required in the digestion process. Finally, the mud from the thickening process is washed to recover caustic and then fed to tailings ponds. The washer overflow is then mixed with the digester product to increase super-saturation."

"This research work forms part of an assessment to complement the feasibility of implementing high pressure sonic injection into relatively small (2.25 m I.D by 3.66 m I.L) Peirce-Smith converters (PSC) used at Lonmin Plc. Work has been carried out to characterize the fluid dynamics of three-phase (air, matte and slag) fluid flow in these converters using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The investigation has been done to study the flow pattern of the three phase system at high air pressure injection achieving sonic velocity at the tuyere exit into the converter. The 2-D and 3-D simulations of the three phase system were carried out using the volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k -e turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow, respectively. These models were implemented using the commercial CFD numerical code FLUENT. A detailed study of the flow pattern has been presented in the form of contour plots and the results obtained are useful for understanding plume extension and velocity distribution, shear wall stress distribution, and phase distribution characteristics in the system. The results provide a basis for further development of sonic injection technology into relatively small industrial Peirce-Smith converters with the ultimate objective of achieving lower energy consumption, improved process efficiency and increased throughput of the converting process. INTRODUCTIONPeirce-Smith converters (PSC) have been used in copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) making smelters for more than a century for the purpose of removing iron (Fe) and sulphur (S) chemically associated with copper-nickel mattes through exothermic oxidation reactions. This process is commonly referred to as conversion. In principle, conversion is a submerged injection process, where typically air (or oxygen enriched air), at subsonic velocity (typically < 150 m/s), is laterally blown into liquid matte (Cu-Ni-Fe-S system). Oxygen preferentially reacts with Fe and S to produce iron oxide (FeO), which is slagged off, and sulphur dioxide (SO2), which reports to the process off gas."

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. "High-risk underwater mining operations necessitate characterizing spatial heterogeneity and resource uncertainty. Local average subdivision is a method of simulating spatial deposit variability inside a cell through a sequence of discretization stages, during which a cell is further subdivided into four or eight cells. New developments are presented to validate simulated deposit models and deal with point measurements of geotechnical and ore-grade properties. This paper illustrates the relevance of translating spatial deposit variability into financial or operational performance indicators during underwater resource exploitation. Two synthetic case studies highlight the challenges of underwater mining in relation to production plans and equipment selection.RÉSUMÉ Les opérations d’extraction minière subaquatique à risque élevé exigent une caractérisation de l’hétérogénéité spatiale et de l’incertitude de la ressource. La moyenne locale de subdivision est une méthode de simuler la variabilité spatiale du gisement dans une cellule par une séquence d’étapes de discrétisation durant lesquelles une cellule est subdivisée en quatre ou huit cellules. De nouveaux développements sont présentés afin de valider les modèles de simulation des gisements et de traiter des mesures ponctuelles des propriétés géotechniques et de teneur du minerai. Le présent article illustre la pertinence de traduire la variabilité spatiale du gisement en indicateurs de rendement financier ou opérationnel durant l’exploitation subaquatique de la ressource. This paper presents an economic evaluation of resin ion exchange and solvent extraction for the purification and concentration of uraniferous solutions derived from sulphuric acid leaching operations. Capital and operating costs are related to the uranium tenors of pregnant solutions. The conclusions drawn herein apply only to cases where resin and liquid ion exchange are technically feasible process alternatives. It is shown that solvent extraction is economically favoured for pregnant solutions at tenors greater than 0.90 gpl U3O8. Pregnant solutions with tenors below 0.35 gpl U3O8 are best treated by resin ion exchange. Between these concentrations, the economics are marginal and the favoured process is indistinguishable within the limits of accuracy of this study.

"Nowadays, there is an increasing interest for realistic spring-block models capable of addressing precursor phenomena in catastrophic earthquake-induced landslides. By pre-defining the constitutive law between externally applied stress and induced local strain increments, the dynamic behaviour of the rock/soil slope can be studied by means of the distribution of slip events at the interface between the soil and the bedrock. It is shown that by relaxing the assumption of constant of externally applied stress rate and local strain increments, a robust 2D spring-block model can be formulated for studying triggered landslides. A cellular automaton is built in order to examine the dynamic behaviour and the stability of rock/soil slopes during the initiation of a landslide. The type and nature of the failure plane, as well as the triggering mechanism is studied. The different dynamic evolution modes of the slope can be mapped to specific shape parameters of the corresponding distributions of the incremental displacements. The proposed spring-block model can be used in order to understand, predict and minimize the impact of catastrophic landslides triggered by earthquakes.INTRODUCTIONEarthquakes have long been introduced as one of the major cause of landslides. Earthquake induced landslides are of great importance because they can cause considerable damage and life casualties. Existing analyses can provide landslide concentration, i.e. the number of landslide sources per square kilometer of surface area, as well as the distance from the earthquake source, which is related to the strength of shaking, the slope steepness, which is connected to shear stress, and finally the rock type, which is referred to material strength (Keefer, 1984). In spite of their great importance in social and economic life, earthquake-induced landslides are still considered as an open geotechnical problem. The dependence of the number and distribution of landslides on earthquake magnitude and ground shaking intensities is a crucial factor for the description and determination of the phenomenon. The hazardous types of earthquake-induced landslides, the most susceptible geologic materials and the reactivation of landslides originally triggered by nonseismic activity are some important topics for areas affected by landslides. Most of these areas present an irregular and asymmetric shape with respect to epicenters and fault ruptures, and also show a strong correlation with magnitude (Keefer, 1984, 2000). The number of landslides caused by an earthquake generally increases with increasing earthquake magnitude. Keefer (1984) presented a magnitude scale in order to quantify the number of earthquake-induced landslides. Malamud et al. (2004) have proposed an independent landslide-event magnitude scale on the earthquakes, based on the logarithm of the total landslides number associated with an event. The aforementioned studies try to relate the landslide magnitude scale to the visible effects of the triggering mechanisms."

"At the 1992 PDAC Convention, Norman Keevil announced the formation of the Exploration Technology Division (ETD) of the Mining Industry Technology Council of Canada (MITEC). It was evident that base metal reserves in Canada were declining and that the cost of discovering a deposit in Canada was increasing. Coordinated research to develop new exploration technologies was required to discover the next generation of ore-bodies. The ETD was formed in response.The mission of the ETD is to contribute to the survival, profit, and growth of the Canadian mining industry by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of mineral exploration through development of innovative technology by man-aging and coordinating applied cooperative research. In addition, it is the intent of the ETD to become the principal agency by which cooperative research funds are transferred to researchers from the mining industry. The division is industry driven, industry funded and industry managed.The ETD’s Three-Year Plan has focussed80% of its research funds toward two objectives, improving the efficiency of exploration for VMS deposits and establishing the parameters necessary to discover the next Hemlo deposit. The remaining 20% is allocated to other projects, with the current emphasis on geophysics.In 1995, corporate members total twenty-three major mining companies accounting for90% of the exploration expenditures in Canada. The ETD is currently managing ten cooperative research projects totalling $4.6million. Other projects, estimated at $1.6 mil-lion, are currently under development."

The quantity of data available and the rate at which we access such data are rapidly increasing. Electronic data capture systems, fleet management systems and a host of other technological advancements have created a constant stream of real-time, tactical data. However, are we taking advantage of this data? Are we converting data into useful information to aid in efficient decision-making? Mining operations are struggling with ?information overload?, finding it difficult to extract the benefits from vast stores of data. Without the necessary tools to facilitate a data filtering and information reporting process, most operations revert to old practises such as re-entering data into multiple spreadsheet reports. As a result, the ability to make effective use of data still eludes many mining operations. Some operations have taken audacious steps to rectify this situation. The De Beers Venetia mine in South Africa has implemented an integrated mining information technology solution that transforms their data into practical, usable information allowing staff and management to make decisions that improve efficiencies and reduce costs. In the absence of quantitative justification or ROI, De Beers took a risk in implementing change. Today, they are realising the benefits. This paper will unearth the information technology issues that surfaced during the Venetia implementation, then identify the benefits De Beers has obtained from deploying an integrated mining information technology solution at the Venetia mine.

In-pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCC) is increasingly being considered by mining companies as a means to reduce their dependence on trucks and thus, fuel, tires, labour, etc. There is potential for great savings in operating costs which ultimately can mean better economics for a mining project. Vale has considered the application of IPCC at its Moatize coal project in Mozambique. Up to three studies have been conducted with the latest, at a pre-feasibility level, showing some promise. This paper explores the mine planning and IPCC engineering elements required in an IPCC study, their application to the Moatize project, and the drivers which most impact the viability of IPCC at Moatize.

As exploration for new mineral deposits advances farther into the Canadian North, the more the design engineer is faced with the problems of cold weather conditions. This is especially true when designing belt conveyor systems for open-pit operations where the temperature in the winter may go to -40°F or below. Problems with the mechanical components and also with the belting will arise, which in turn may reduce the availability of the system. This paper outlines the problems encountered during cold weather operation and what precautionary measures must be taken into consideration in the design of equipment, as well as in the selection of materials, in order to ensure a system which will maintain production. THE conveying of ore and waste in the pit or to the processing plant poses problems during cold weather, when temperatures may drop to -4o?F or be-low. Troubles with the mechanical components, the belting or the supporting structure may arise, and this, in turn, will reduce the availability of the conveying system.

ABSTRACT: Rock bolts are the main form of defence against rock falls in mines. Conditions under-ground are conducive to corrosion. A perception exists about American coal mines that bolt corrosion is not an issue, especially when bolts are fully grouted. This perception is not necessarily accurate due to the formation of micro-cracks as the resin sets and to subsequent rock movement that breaks the resin column’s continuity. Corrosion should be considered when designing rock bolt support in long-term excavations. This paper explores the problem of corrosion, outlines a method to determine the corrosion potential of bolts, and suggests ways to mitigate such effects.

"The adoption of tailored-rolled or tailor-welded blanks (i.e. TRB/TWB) in the automotive industry has been known to offer great potential for the optimization of weight, function, cost and complexity. Vehicle light weighting can further be achieved by using high strength aluminum alloys like the 7xxx-series. 7xxx-series alloys are capable of delivering specific strengths equal to or greater than high strength steels. However, room temperature formability of this aluminum class is limited, so one approach to forming 7xxx-series alloys is by hot stamping. Hot stamping utilizes an elevated temperature blank and the high pressure stamping contact of the forming die to simultaneously quench and form the sheet. This paper explores the initial feasibility of tailored thickness material for body-in-white applications when processed under hot stamping conditions.INTRODUCTION Steel tailor-rolled blanks (TRB) or tailor-welded blanks (TWB) have been used within the automotive industry as a method of reducing weight, expanding material utilization, and decreasing overall part/assembly cost (Ganeasan et al., 2015; Merklein et al., 2014; Hirt et al., 2005; Kridli et al., 2000). The production of such tailored thickness materials has resulted in over $2.5 billion (2016) in combined industry sales (Mubea, 2018). As automakers begin to adopt the manufacturing practices traditionally reserved for steel such as tailor rolling/welding with greater enthusiasm for vehicle light weighting, there exist an opportunity to expand the material database to extend beyond the traditional aluminum alloys found in current production. High strength aluminum alloys, i.e. 7xxx-series, are ideal for structural automotive applications due to their high specific strength; however, they have limited room temperature formability. Hot stamping, another manufacturing practice used by the steel industry, can be used to form these high strength materials. The combination of tailoring the thickness of a sheet material and hot stamping provides an opportunity for significant weight saving within an existing manufacturing footprint. This paper explores the potential and challenges of this approach when applied to structural body-in-white components. The methods for tailor rolling, tailor welding and hot stamping are described and applied to the production of a 7075 aluminum alloy B-pillar. The results are discussed in terms of feasibility and weight savings."

There is accepted evidence that multistage fracturing of horizontal wells in shale reservoirs results in significant production variation from perforation cluster to perforation cluster. In fact, only a fraction of the perforation clusters seem to contribute to production in many shale gas and shale oil plays. In many cases, the orientation of the lateral section of these wells is determined by lease boundaries rather than principal stress directions, and these often do not coincide. When horizontal wells are misaligned from the far-field principal stress directions, the fracture must reorient from the near-wellbore principal stress directions, which are aligned with the wellbore, to the far-field principal stress directions. The primary objective of this study is to learn how various completion designs influence the near-wellbore fracture geometry when such a misalignment exists. A secondary objective is to understand the influence of rock fabric features, such as mineralized natural fractures, on this reorientation process. To understand these effects, eight laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests were conducted using a true triaxial vessel with 914 mm × 762 mm × 762 mm samples of Niobrara shale. Several different completion designs were studied, including the use of fracture initiation slots with several different orientations and the use of perforations selectively located to encourage a smooth transition from the near- to far-wellbore region. The tests were carefully scaled as accurately as possible to provide insight into the field near-wellbore phenomena. Pressure and fluid flux at the wellbore, deformation of the block, acoustic velocity, and induced acoustic emissions were acquired during the tests. Additionally, sized particles were also injected to gauge the fracture width away from the wellbore. After the test, the blocks were dismantled, and the fracture geometry was mapped in 3D. These measurements allow one to clearly differentiate the fracture initiation and the breakdown—meaning the peak pressure—to be clearly differentiated; the fracture was already well developed when the maximum pressure was reached. The study reveals non-negligible tortuosity and aperture restriction in the near-wellbore region. In the field, this would translate to high treating pressures, uneven proppant distribution, and possibly near-wellbore screenouts. The test results show that, of the configurations tested, the best approach is to use deep slots that are aligned with the far-field principal stress directions. The oriented perforation design did not achieve the simple, smooth transition that was hoped for, and instead produced multiple competing near-wellbore fractures and considerable tortuosity. The study also demonstrated that the presence of planes of weakness, such as mineralized natural fractures, near the slot tip can result in poor near-wellbore fracture geometries, even for the best completion configuration. We conclude from these tests that the misalignment of the well with a principal stress direction creates near-wellbore complexity that, in turn, creates uncertainty in proppant distribution and, therefore, production; proppant might avoid up to a half of the created fracture. Regardless of the wellbore orientation, this uncertainty is further increased by the presence of mineralized features in the rock fabric that can strongly alter or stop the growth of the hydraulic fracture. Preventing those effects by changing the completion alone proves difficult, and new strategies are required to ensure a reliable stimulation of shales.

T HE production of coal in Canada was slightly higher in 1964 than in the immediate past, and the major users continue to be the electric utility and metallurgical industries. There are continuing trends toward the increased use of cokes and chars in various metallurgical applications. Geological Research During 1964, the coal drilling program of the Research Council of Alberta (RCA) was concentrated in the extreme south of the Province (notably in the Milk River area and the region immediately to the northeast of this area). Field work commenced on June 1 and was completed at the end of September, by which time a total of 376 holes, aggregating some 48,500 ft., were drilled in 132 townships. Although no new major coal occurrences were intersected, the pro-gram yielded useful data for defining the extent of the known coal deposits in the area. "As part of a series describing the nickel operations of Vale Canada (formerly known as Inco), this paper focuses on the 1973 to current operations of the Copper Cliff nickel refinery in Ontario, Canada. The process used there employs the formation of Ni tetracarbonyl at high CO (gas) pressure and its subsequent decomposition at somewhat elevated temperatures to produce highly pure Ni pellets and powders. Personal sampling of workplace aerosol dusts is reported, with information on specific Ni compounds in the aerosols.RÉSUMÉ Dans le cadre de la série d’articles décrivant les opérations de nickel chez Vale Canada (anciennement Inco), le présent article cible les opérations de 1973 à ce jour à l’affinerie de nickel de Copper Cliff en Ontario, Canada. We all know what needs to be accomplished, but struggle with how to do it, especially in an industry which has not always experienced management/union cooperation, and mistrust is still present.This paper describes a process to improve team work and employee involvement in Inco&apos;s nickel carbonyl refinery at Copper Cliff The process involves facilitatorship training for all employees, and a system for reinforcing and accomplishing the required behavioural change. The system is described in detail and a number of examples are presented. At the refinery, the staff is starting to understand as Max DePree recently wrote ""Without Quality Behaviour, you cannot have Quality Product"". IntroductionThe Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery (CCNR) is Inco&apos;s largest and most modern nickel refinery, which celebrated its twentieth year of successful operation in April 1993.The heart of the refinery is the Inco pressure carbonyl (IPq plant which produces high purity nickel pellets and specialty powders by refining an approximate 80% nickel granule feed. The carbonyl plant is a modem chemical plant with very special and demanding requirements for safety and environmental protection due to the toxic nature of the refining gas.Since 1987, there has been an emphasis at CCNR on a comprehensive Total Quality Improvement (TQI) Program which was designed based on recognizing customers&apos; needs for improved systems for quality management. This program is customer oriented and comprises such elements as team organizational concepts, customer audits, process assessment and internal quality auditing.A detailed review of progress was made in early 1991 and it became apparent that the ""ownership"" of the TQI program was not broad based. In fact, the program was very much a staff driven effort and fell far short of total employee involvement and relentless continuous improvement that are now considered essential to remain competitive and stay in business.Inco staff has now come to regard that early phase of our TQI program as ""the technical aspects of total quality improvement"".The safety experience was also puzzling. Even though the safety statistics were good with an average lost time frequency of 1.6 for the last five years, the perfonnance improvement had plateaued and remained pretty much the same. Clearly a new approach was required if significant progress and continuous improvement was to be made."
