THE 2,538-foot belt conveyor recently installed underground at the Sullivan mine hoists ore from the 3,350-foot level to the 3,900-foot or main haulage level, a vertical distance of 680 feet. The design and planning of development work, under the direction of Mr. R. H. Stewart, Consulting Engineer, was begun in the spring of 1941. Development work was started in July of that year from the 3,350-foot level, and headings were started on the 3,650-foot and 3,900-foot levels later in the same year. It was the intention at that time to keep three headings going on development work necessary for the installation of the system: two on the conveyor incline, and one on the 3,900-foot level. This programme was modified in 1942 when there was some doubt whether the material for construction could be obtained. This problem of supply was eventually solved and the development work was pushed to completion in December, 1943. Construction was started in December, 1943, "'under the supervision of Mr. G. H. McKay, Superintendent of Construction and? Maintenance, and was completed in November, 1944.

Presently,Many long-wall fully-mechanized faces in shallow depth coal seams are below room and pillar goaf in Shendong mining area. When the working face is advanced out of concentrated coal pillar in upper room and pillar goaf, strong strata behaviors often cause support crushing accident. Aiming at a support crushing accident which happened in Shigetai coal mine of Shenhua group in Shendong mining area, this paper analyses the stress transfer process while mining out of concentrated coal pillar by numerical simulation software FLAC3D. According to the feature, simplifying the roof of upper room and pillar goaf as supporting-beam structure explains mechanism of large area collapse in room and pillar goaf roof. Based on the feature of supporting-beam structure, deep-hole blasting concentrated coal pillar technology is proposed to control the strong strata behaviors in Shigetai coal mine. The blasting control effect is confirmed through characteristics of strata behaviors, growth circumstance of ground crack and multi-point extensometer monitoring results. By using control technology, Shigetai coal mine has been successfully avoided support crushing accident.

"The ever increasing demand for cleaner steels with low inclusion content has highlighted the limits of our current knowledge for controlling and predicting inclusion agglomeration and removal during liquid steel processing. Key knowledge gaps in this area result from the complex nature of the problems associated with measuring and visualizing the phenomena studied. Confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) allows for continuous in situ observation of micron-size samples in real time, at high resolution, under conditions relevant to the steelmaking process. This paper summarizes some of recent CSLM applications in our laboratory to illustrate the methods of analyzing transient behavior. The reaction between inclusions and slag is given as an example. The dissolution rate of calcium aluminate inclusions in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slags has been studied at elevated temperatures: 1500, 1550 and 1600°C as well as thermodynamic/kinetic analysis. It is found that total dissolution time decreased with increasing temperature. The rate limiting steps are discussed. It is shown that the diffusion through a product layer is responsible for dissolution at 1500°C. At higher temperature, dissolution is most likely controlled by both boundary layer diffusion and chemical reaction at the slag-inclusion interface. In this paper, the evidence for and against the theory will be critically examined and repercussions of the theory to steel refining processes will be discussed.INTRODUCTION Inclusion formation during liquid steel refining is an unavoidable consequence of current ladle steelmaking processes. The nature and quantity of the inclusions formed in steel is critical in steelmaking, as it affects both productivity through clogging, and downstream physical properties of the steel. It is therefore crucial to better understand and control the formation, agglomeration and dissolution behaviour of inclusions in a slag in order to improve the removability of inclusions from liquid steel. Most research (Sandhage & Yurek, 1988; Sandhage & Yurek, 1990a; Sandhuge & Yurek, 1990b; Sandhuge, 1991) relevant to the kinetics of inclusion removal has been obtained by using a technique where simulated inclusion material (ceramic rods) is dipped in slag and the dissolution rate is measured. While much has been learned using this approach, the difference in scale from bulk materials to inclusions is likely to have a significant bearing on the dissolution kinetics of inclusions in a slag and will certainly result in a very different influence of capillary effects. Further, the data obtained using an indirect (dip test) procedure relies on a comparison of the initial and final conditions of a sample rather than in-situ observation which can be achieved in a confocal microscope in real time."

"Abstract - The Eel River area in the southwestern Miramichi terrane of New Brunswick contains a complete calc-alkaline suite of volcanic rocks that are interlayered with intervals of sedimentary and polylithic fragmental rocks, and are overlain by a thick sedimentary sequence. This package, collectively referred to as the Meductic Group, was deposited in a submerged volcanic arc setting interpreted to be part of the Popelogan arc. Rifting of this arc led to the development of the Tetagouche-Exploits back-arc basin, and formation of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in bimodal volcanic rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp in the northeastern Miramichi Terrane. Unlike the Bathurst Mining Camp, volcanic rocks in the southeastern Miramichi Highlands form a continuous calc-alkaline suite characterized by increasing Zr/TiO2 with increasing SiO2, in part resulting from progressive coupled assimilation and fractional crystallization of nested magma systems. Slumping of semi-consolidated volcanic and sedimentary rocks in topographically unstable areas resulted in numerous slumps and debris flows that are preserved throughout the Eel River area. In the early 1990s, the discovery of a large sulfide clast in a road cut along the Benton road sparked interest in the volcanogenic massive sulfide potential of the Eel River area. Subsequent drilling intersected smaller fragments, one clast of which graded 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag, and 220 ppb Au. The intersection of thin lenses of stratiform sulfides in another drillhole indicates favorable conditions for the preservation of massive sulfides. Their subsequent incorporation into synvolcanic debris flows resulted in the transport and deposition of sulfide clasts from hydrothermal vents to more distal locations. Similar to the Buchans deposits of Newfoundland, tracing these debris flows back to their source would be beneficial from an exploration perspective. Approximately 15 km to the southwest of the Eel River area, gold-bearing base metal sulfide clasts (11.1% Zn, 6.13% Pb, 0.19% Cu, 108 ppm Ag, and 1100 ppb Au) occur within intermediate-composition volcanic rocks at Monument Brook in eastern Maine. Cet assemblage constitue le Groupe de Meductic, et a été déposé dans un environnement d’arc insulaire interprété comme une partie de l’arc de Popelogan. Le rifting de cet arc à mené au développement du bassin d’arrière-arc de Tetagouche-Exploits, et à la formation de gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les roches volcaniques bimodales du Camp Minier de Bathurst dans le nord-est de la terrane de Miramichi. Contrairement au Camp Minier de Bathurst, les roches volcaniques des hautes terres du sud-est de Miramichi constituent une suite calco-alcaline continue caractérisée par un accroissement du rapport Zr/TiO2 à des valeurs croissantes de SiO2, résultant en partie de l’assimilation progressive et de la cristallisation fractionnée de systèmes magmatiques superposés. L’effondrement de roches volcaniques et sédimentaires semi-consolidées dans des secteurs topographiquement instables est à l’origine des nombreux slumps et coulées de débris qui sont préservés dans le secteur d’Eel River. Au début des années 1990, la découverte d’un large claste de sulfures le long de la route Benton provoqué un intérêt pour le potentiel en gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les secteur d’Eel River. Des forages ont par la suite recoupé des fragments plus petits, dont un claste qui a retourné des teneurs de 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag et 220 ppb Au. In order elucidate the mechanism for poorer fatigue properties of 7000 series aluminum alloys than those of 2000 series alloys, the effect of the test environment on the fatigue crack growth of the two series alloys was investigated, considering the relationship to hydrogen embrittlement. Two 7075-type and four 2024-type alloys were T6-tempered and T4-tempered respectively, and subjected to fatigue crack growth tests in moist and dry environments. When tested in moist air, fraction of intergranular crack path was higher in the 7075-type alloy with coarse equi-axed grains than in the 2024-type alloy with similar microstructure. This was in accord with the larger crack growth rate in the 7075-type alloy. Both the intergranular crack path fraction and the crack growth rate were decreased by changing the environment to the flow of nitrogen gas. Thus, the large fatigue crack growth rate of the 7075-type alloy is attributable to hydrogen embrittlement.

"Abstract - As a contribution to the World Minerals Geoscience Database Project, an index-level database comprising information on 142 SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits and occurrences was constructed in Microsoft Access 95 format. Although consisting of only basic information, the compilation, with full referencing of all data, is possibly the largest non-corporate SEDEX Pb-Zn database in the world. It thus provides an opportunity to make geoscience queries of SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits on a scale not previously available. This report provides a summary of the results of a few such queries both as a contribution to a better understanding of SEDEX lead-zinc deposits and as a demonstration of what even such a simple database can offer.During the compilation process, it became apparent that SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits could be assigned to one of the following three sub-types: Type 1 (53.5% of total) in which sulfide minerals are the only exhalative components; Type 2 (33.1%) in which the exhalative components are sulfides plus chert, siderite/ankerite, and/or barite; Type 3 (13.4%) which contains any components of Types 1 and 2 plus abundant iron-oxide minerals (commonly magnetite) and/or is associated with iron oxide-rich sedimentary rocks.Highlights of systematic queries of the database reveal that:1. a majority (84%) of the world’s SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits are not underlain by a discordant footwall feeder zone or vent complex;2. 63.6% of deposits occur in Proterozoic strata followed by a second peak in the Devonian (16.8%). Of those in the Proterozoic, 83% of Type 3 deposits occur in the Gondwanaland supercontinent, whereas only 42% of Type 2 and 39% of Type 1 are located in this large paleo-landmass;3. median (Pb+Zn) grades in Types 1 and 2 fall between 9% and 10% with a majority clustering within this range. Type 3 grades, however, range from ~1% to ~20% (Pb+Zn) with a median of 5%; 4. median size of Type 3 deposits is ~33 Mt, whereas Type 1 and 2 median sizes are ~7 Mt and ~8 Mt, respectively.The report concludes with a brief discussion of how an index-level database such as this can be used in conjunction with other, similar databases to reveal interesting and instructive relationships for guiding both research and exploration."

"This paper presents regional radiometric gamma-ray spectrometry maps of Syria for total radioactivity (Ur) and surficial concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU). The maps were created by merging airborne and ground-based gamma-ray spectrometric survey datasets. On the regional radiometric eU map, eU anomalies are closely related to either phosphate and/or glauconite deposits. The Ur and eU maps delineate the boundaries of three phosphate deposits, close to the Palmyrides ridge, in the northern part of the Coastal Range and Syrian Desert. Scattered occurrences of uranium mineralization in other phosphate formations are attributed to secondary chemical and physical processes, rather than primary accumulation.RÉSUMÉ Cet article presente des cartes regionales radiometriques de spectrometrie gamma de la Syrie pour la radioactivite totale (Ur) et les concentrations en surface de l’equivalent en uranium (eU). Les cartes ont ete creees en combinant des ensembles de donnees, aeroportees et au sol, de releves de spectrometrie gamma. Sur la carte regionale radiometrique eU, les anomalies eU sont etroitement reliees aux gisements de phosphate et(ou) de glauconite. "The No. 6 orebody is located 6 miles from the main op.eration of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited and includes open-pit and primary gyratory crushing facilities. Ore is transferred by truck to the secondary crushing facility at the main plant. About 3,500 tons of ore per day are crushed to minus % in. and ground to 68 per cent minus 400 mesh in rod and ball mills for flotation feed. Conditioning and aeration precede rougher flotation, and four stages of cleaning bring concentrates to a grade of 42 per cent Pb + Zn + Cu. Middling products are reground and refloated in a secondary flotation circuit, producing a cleaner feed and a final tails product. Primary bulk concentrate is treated with sulphur dioxide and steam-heated to l 70°F and the majority of the gangue is floated off, leaving a product that assays 57 per cent combined Pb + Zn + Cu and is suitable for marketing. This material is thickened, filtered, dried and loaded into railway cars for shipment to the smelter. Reagent use on flotation is conventional, with many compromises in dosage required to maintain the recovery of lead and zinc in the most advantageous proportions. Many refinements in the flowsheet have been made since start-up in 1966, and more may be made as laboratory and plant testwork indicate possible improvements."

Zeballos mining camp is on the west coast of Vancouver island; 195 nautical miles northwest from Victoria.; The spectacularly rich gold-bearing veins that made Zeballos an important; gold camp were found early in 1934. Small pockets of very coarse; gold had been found earlier under large boulders at the mouth of Spud; creek; and in the autumn of 1933 rich gold-quartz float was found near the; mouth of the creek. The rocky beds of the steep creeks entering Spud creek; were searched for its source and as a result the veins on the White Star property; were found. The Goldfield vein on the Spud Valley property was discovered; in 1935; and the No. 1 vein on the Privateer in 1936. In the general; prospecting activity that quickly followed; other veins were found; not; only in Spud creek but in other creeks draining into Zeballos river.

The leaching pretreatment of copper ores is widely used in the Chilean mining industry. Agglomeration and acid curing have been identified as the most useful pretreatments. Of these, acid curing was recognized as beneficial in the dissolution of copper minerals, even in sulphides such as chalcopyrite. Extensive acid curing times have an impact on copper extraction, generate a homogeneous acid distribution in the mineral bed and benefit the inhibition of aluminum-silicate minerals (acid consumers). This document describes some of the theoretical background and results regarding the effect of acid curing in a chalcopyrite sample with 74% purity according to Qemscan analysis and a 28.5% of total copper. Leaching tests are carried out at 25, 50 and 70°C, evaluating the effect of a pretreatment on the chalcopyrite dissolution. The original sample and products generated were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The performed experiments indicate a direct relation between the effect of curing time and temperature in copper extraction. 92% of copper can be extracted in a leaching at 70°C and with 15 days of curing. Elemental sulfur, jarosite and copper polysulfide (CuS2) have been detected in leaching products. INTRODUCTION The copper extraction from minerals is a technique that has been developed for hundreds of years in the world. In 2017, the largest copper producer was Chile, exported 5.5 million tons (COCHILCO, 2018). However, in order to preserve this production level means overcoming multiple challenges. In the case of the Chilean copper deposits, the average copper grade in 2016 was 0.65%, lower than the 1% declared in 2004 (Consejo Minero, 2018). This is mainly due to the deeper of the deposits reaching sulfide mineral zones, mainly chalcopyrite. Traditionally, these sulfurized zones ore are treated through concentration by flotation and subsequent pyrometallurgical treatments. However, for some copper companies it is complex to process by this alternative, due to the high costs and high rates of water consumption. The mineral resources of these companies are known as "low-grade sulfides" and do not allow, economically, the treatment of these minerals through concentration by flotation. This is how hydrometallurgy becomes an alternative for the treatment of this type of deposits. In addition, several companies have hydrometallurgical plants, which would allow the operational continuity of these plants.

This paper presents a novel action recognition method for observing human workers using interactions between actions and related objects on an internal construction site. This method can be used to measure work rates for labour productivity monitoring. This monitoring is critical because the performance of a construction project is significantly impacted by labour productivity. However, construction sites are generally crowded with a large number of workers and objects. Such congestion disrupts the accurate, automatic recognition of construction workers? actions. This congestion is one reason that existing automatic action recognition studies of construction areas mainly focus on workers? actions themselves. However, the crowded conditions mean that sites could offer a great deal of clues that could be used for automatic action recognition. According to psychological studies, interactions clearly take place between human actions and related objects, such as between hammering and a hammer. Humans use these interactions to recognize actions or objects more accurately. On the construction site, workers, materials, tools, and equipment are carefully planned out ahead of actual construction. The categories of workers and objects are pre-defined and, as noted, specific interactions define relations between worker actions and objects. In this paper, the interactions are limited to human workers and their hand-held objects. Action recognition results can be combined with hand-held object information to improve recognition accuracy. With the limited interactions, experiments in this paper show a significant improvement in action recognition. This paper describes the utilization of these interactions to improve construction action recognition accuracy based on human skeleton data and 2D color video from Microsoft KINECT sensor.

Mines today use various methods of mining to extract ore. Because of the dangerous nature of many of these processes, remotely controlled LHD machines are being used to extract the ore from the draw point. The remote control system, although being made safer all the time, has remained virtually unchanged for many years. The basic functionality is an operator switching the machine to remote control, getting out of the cab, walking up a stand, operating remotely, returning to the cab, switching to manual, driving manually, switching to remote, and switching to manual. It seems repetitive, and time consuming, does it not? Networking, convergence, video, voice, and data infrastructures, and other technologies are growing by leaps and bounds in virtually every industry and region, except for mining. From the comfort of the living room couch, a Canadian can play hockey online with full voice conversations over the Internet with someone in Russia in real time. Yet, a mine superintendent must jump through hoops to have a private conversation with the front line supervisor underground. "Is Joe around anywhere?" If Joe hears the message, he will respond. If not, who knows? Maybe he's hurt. Maybe he's not. Where is Joe? Nobody really knows, and that is scary. Today, surface knows that the workers disappeared into the cage at 7:00 a.m. They also know that the workers will probably and hopefully return at 3:00 p.m. Is there not a better way to handle this? With such a complex industry, it seems as if, for the most part, the introduction of new technology into mining has either been overlooked or has been met with some resistance. It is time to step back, look at the process, and see how it can be improved. Key areas of focus will be safety, productivity, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.

The Outotec Flash Smelting process is widely used in primary copper production. A layer of slag on top of matte (copper–iron sulphide melt) creates a barrier through which matte droplets descend. Droplets of different sizes settle through the layer at different rates, which increases possibility of copper losses as smaller matte droplets may be removed with the slag. In this work CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamics – discrete element method) coupling was used to simulate matte droplets settling through the slag during slag tapping. Discrete droplets and slag flow were simulated with DEM and CFD, respectively. This new approach enables tracking and solving movement and interactions of individual droplets. User-defined models were created to take coalescence and reaction kinetics into account. Coalescence created larger droplets, while the reactions decreased droplet size and increased its density. Drag caused funnelling effect, which pulled droplets towards the centre line of the descending cluster. This research is the only study known by the present authors in modelling liquid-liquid systems with the CFD-DEM coupling. Simulating coalescence and chemical reactions for discrete droplets enables more realistic simulations. However, CFD- DEM simulations are computationally resource intensive already without additional models, so a full scale industrial settler modelling still waits for further increase in computer performance. INTRODUCTION Flash smelting is a method used in copper and nickel production. In the flash smelting process, oxidation of sulphides in a concentrate is used to release energy needed to smelt the feed. In the process, copper matte is formed. Matte has copper content in the range of 55 – 70% (Sridhar, Toguri, & Simeonov, 1997), the rest is mainly sulphur and iron but has still many other impurities (Taskinen, Seppälä, Laulumaa, & Poijärvi, 2001). Oxidized iron forms iron-silicate slag while SO2 is collected for acid production (Davenport & Partelpoeg, 2015). The Outotec flash smelting furnace (FSF) can be divided in four major component: concentrate burner, reaction shaft, settler and uptake. Concentrate, flux and oxygen enriched air are injected into the reactor through the concentrate burner. The mixture then reacts in the reaction shaft forming matte and slag, which are collected in the settler, while off-gases flow out of the reactor through uptake for heat and dust recovery, and SO2 collection for H2SO4 production. The matte and slag form separate layers due to immiscibility and density difference. Raw material feed is continuous, but the matte and the slag are tapped periodically. A flash smelting furnace is depicted in Figure 1.

Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. A large contribution here is the new joint venture PolyMet Solutions that was founded by SMS group and Mettop, an Austrian engineering company, with the objective to develop new technical solutions for the primary copper production lines as well as for non-ferrous metals starting with the primary smelting of concentrate and ending with the electrolysis. PolyMet Solutions provides the process know-how whereas SMS group supplies the plants and equipment and Mettop the key components. SMS group and Mettop also cooperate in the field of tankhouse technology. Together with Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, Mettop has developed together with a parallel flow technology (METTOP-BRX Technology), allowing a current efficiency of above 98 % at a current density of 420 A/m², which is a milestone in copper electrolysis. For the secondary copper production route, SMS group and PolyMet Solutions developed an innovative refining furnace (PolyRefine) for the smelting and refining of copper scrap. The refined copper is directly charged to the Contirod line to produce copper rods and wires. The innovative cooling solutions of SMS and PolyMet Solutions come into play where furnaces have to stand the highest loads and stresses, for instance in areas of very high temperatures or temperature fluctuations, aggressive exhaust gases and slags, or at critical spots such as taphole areas. Custom-tailored cooling systems for furnace vessels make sure varying loads are compensated in a targeted and effective manner. The solutions include air cooling, spray cooling, cooling technologies with integrated copper elements such as CFM (Composite Furnace Modular) cooling systems, plate and finger coolers. The major innovation in the field of furnace cooling is the ILTEC (Ionic Liquid Cooling) Technology which paves the way for increased plant safety. This revolutionary, patented cooling technology is jointly marketed by Mettop and SMS group. It permits water-free cooling to be implemented and thus makes operation safe wherever it is applied. INTRODUCTION Non-ferrous metals or NF metals are changing the world. There is no modern industrial sector that can do without these valuable metals. Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. The importance of the non-ferrous metals market is reflected by two figures. In 2018, the production of non-ferrous metals was worth more than 237 billion Euros. This contrasts with 255 billion Euros of the value of iron and ferro- alloy production in the same year (International Organizing Comittee for the World Mining Congresses, 2018). "The Cohesion Weakening Friction Strengthening (CWFS) is adopted in numerical analysis to capture the observed progressive failure of hard rock pillars. As a case study, pillars at the Elliot Lake mines with width to height ratios of 0.5 to 3 were analyzed in FLAC3D. Pillars with width to height ratios of 0.5 and 1 show a very similar strain softening behavior while with width to height ratios of 2 and especially 3 indicated prolonged strain hardening. The CWFS model successfully captured the mechanism of progressive failure observed in hard rock pillars including initiation of spalling at the corners, progress of spalling towards the centre and formation of hour-glass shaped pillar, and eventually shearing through the width of pillar. Both the CWFS model and site specific empirical formula successfully separated the stable and failed cases in the Elliot Lake mines. While both models are in reasonable agreement for width to height ratios of less than 2, the empirical formula gives increasingly lower strength values for wider pillars which may result in excessively conservative and uneconomical design.INTRODUCTIONPillars are the portion of in situ rock left between the adjacent openings to maintain the stability of excavations. Conditions of equilibrium require that the loads previously carried by the excavated rocks be transferred to the pillars resulting in elevated stresses within the pillar. Hence, prediction of the behavior of pillars under these loads is important for underground design. Determination of the strength of pillars is a classic subject in underground mining. In conventional mining methods such as room and pillar operations, economic incentives point towards higher excavation ratios i.e., leaving smaller pillars between the mined excavations, while safety and stability requirements favor wider stronger pillars. In some mining methods such as caving operations, the problem is even more challenging. On one hand, the whole operation is directly dependent on the proper continuous flow of caved ore between the drawpoints which requires optimizing the spacing between drawpoints and thereby often leaving narrower pillars. On the other hand, the pillars should be wide enough to ensure the safety of mining operation. Both the blockage of drawpoints as a result of wide pillars and uncontrolled failure of narrow pillars can jeopardize the investments and mining operation.Therefore, design of pillar poses a somewhat unique challenge to rock engineers where simple conservative approaches frequently used in other design methods are no longer acceptable. The behavior of pillar under elevated loads should be predicted accurately."

"This is a prelirr1inary report on automatic control at East Malartic Gold Mines.After installation of the cyclones in the East Malartic grinding circuit, the interest was aroused in the automatic control system for the circuit. Investigations were made as to the possibilities of such an installation. This resulted in a preliminary survey of the circuit by Milltronics Ltd and an analysis of the circuit by Mines Branch personnel. A study of the investigation and analysis indicated that a cost reduction and improved efficiency could be expected by the installation of an automatic control system in the grinding circuit. It was also indicated tl1at such installation should pay for itself within a year. This was the point that sold management on such installation. The need of three operators was expected to be eliminated .The installation was to consist of a central control panel, microphoncs on each mill, regulation of feed rate, pneumatic valves for addition of solt1tions, density control of the cyclone overflow, which is a grinding circuit product, rod mill feed box plugging detector and a conveyer weightometer for tonnage indication and control.As well as the elimination of one man per sl1ift, other benefits which were to be received but unable to estimate were: 1) More tonnage per clay by operation of the mills at the proper capacities. 2) Lower grinding costs. Less under-loading should result in less steel wear and lower pumping cost. In the condition of overloading, a coarser grind is obtained resulting in greater impeller and liner wear. The overloading and underloading showed up on the n1icropl1oncs. 3) An improvement in the recovery as a result of less over-load. The tailings loss from a coarser grind are not as frequent."

"Geological material can be subjected to some different loading conditions, mainly due to three inter-related physical processes which are mechanical, thermal, and hydrological. Freezing and thawing process of rock that occurs in sub-zero temperature condition may contain some or all those three physical processes depended on its initial condition. Those inter-related physical processes may lead the ground into failures. Therefore, understanding the physical properties such as deformation process of geological material under freezing and thawing condition is required for the artificial ground freezing projects and engineering construction activity in the natural cold region.In order to study the strain characteristic of rocks during freezing and thawing process, a series of freezing and thawing experiments of core samples of three different rock types and mortar has been conducted under varying temperature from -20 °C to +20 °C. Four core sample types are Sandstone, Granite, Tuff, and Mortar with 50 mm diameter and 50 mm height, which were naturally dried before the freezing-thawing experiment. Freezing-thawing experiment was conducted by submerging the vinyl covered core samples into a temperature-controlled liquid coolant box. Firstly, temperature of liquid (brine solution) was set at -20 °C so that the temperature of subjected sample was decreasing to as low as -20 °C. And then the temperature of brine was returning to initial room temperature after the coolant system was stopped. Strain gauge and thermo couple were attached on the core’s perimeter to measure strains and temperature changes.Sandstone and Mortar samples show relatively similar results than other two samples. Both presents linearly shrink with the temperature decrease and expand almost to its initial condition with the temperature increase. Granite shows less-linear strain-temperature relationship during thawing process, while the Tuff sample shows abrupt strain increase during thawing process on the temperature higher than +10 °C. Thermal expansion value of each rock types were obtained by fitting the major strain-temperature relationship on -19 °C to +10 °C temperature range. Overall, anisotropic deformation was observed on the entire samples and possible mechanisms for each hysteresis characteristic are discussed, which need to be confirmed by further experiments."

As one of the chief barometers of economic health, the consumption and supply of energy reflect this slowing up.These same two years have also seen significant changes in the relation between the sources of energy. In periods of declining demand, it has happened in the past that coal, as the basic or residual source of energy, has shown the effects to a greater extent than the other energies. In these two years, however, in addition to this usual effect, there has been the acceleration in the Joss of market to diesels in the railway consumption category and the continuing decline in domestic consumption. The story of these years is presented in the statistical tables that form the foundation of this paper. Statistics, particularly in the form of tables, are rather dry and are sometimes difficult to follow but the overall developments are illustrated by graphs which present a more striking picture."

C.'s massive $2.5 billion northeast coal development.The RTI terminal will have initial capacity to transfer 12 million tonnes of coal a year from railcars to storage and to ships. Capacity will be doubled to 24 million tonnes as market opportunities are developed.The challenge of building this $220-million facility in less than 24 months, the benefits Canada has received from the work the project is generating, and the long-term faith in Canada that this project represents, are all part of the excitement which surrounds the Ridley Terminal and northeast coal developments.RIDLEY TERMINALS INC. (RTI) is building a very significant addition to Canada's commodity export transportation capabilities. The facility, on Ridley Island at Prince Rupert, on the north coast of British Columbia, is a key link in British Columbia's northeast coal development which in itself is a massive undertaking involving investment of some $2.5 billion. The entire project is making a substantial contribution to Canada's economy at a time when such contributions are sorely needed.The development is creating employment, not only in British Columbia where its various parts are being created by mining companies, railways and others, but also across the country where suppliers are manufacturing a wide variety of good s and equipment for the development's participants.The RTI terminal is no exception. It is a critical cog in this mega project's large transportation system and its construction is contributing substantially to job creation and to other economic activity, in the Prince Rupert area and in many other parts of British Columbia and the rest of Canada."
