"Abstract - Twenty-seven marine Mn and Fe deposits chosen for their diverse origins have been analyzed for five platinum-group elements (PGE). The PGE display their highest concentrations in hydrogenous Mn crusts and nodules, lesser concentrations in diagenetic nodules and two to three orders of magnitude lower concentrations in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. This difference of behavior reflects the well-known fractionation of Mn and Fe from the other transition elements, rare earth elements (REE) and PGE in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir show a close geochemical coherence in these deposits and are differentiated from Pd which shows a negative anomaly with respect to the other PGE in hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits. Pd is less depleted than the other PGE and the Pd anomaly much less pronounced in the hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts relative to the hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits.Stability field diagrams show no evidence for the oxidation of Pt to the tetravalent state in seawater as suggested by some authors. Rather, Pt appears to be present in seawater as Pt(OH)2 0. Adsorption of Pt(OH)2 0 onto the surface of Mn and Fe oxyhydroxide minerals may explain the enrichment of Pt in marine Mn deposits. However, Pt metal is the thermodynamically stable solid phase of Pt under seawater conditions and reduction of Pt(OH)2 0 to Pt metal, particularly in the vicinity of the oxygen minimum zone, is possible, although the high Ce/La ratios of the Co-rich Mn crusts do not support this hypothesis. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir display their maximum concentrations in the Corich Mn crusts. This may reflect, among other things, the low growth rates of these deposits. The stability field diagram of Pd shows that Pd is undersaturated in seawater and occurs in seawater dominantly as PdCl4 2- and anionic mixed-hydroxide-chloride complexes. This would explain the anomalous position of Pd among the PGE with respect to its uptake into marine Mn deposits. A study of inter-element associations indicates that the incorporation of the PGE from meteoritic dust plays only a minor role in the uptake of these elements into marine Mn deposits. The PGE remain the most poorly studied group of elements in marine Mn deposits. The data presented here emphasize the need for the establishment of a more comprehensive database of the PGE in marine Mn deposits in order to understand more fully their uptake into marine Mn deposits and their pathways through the oceans."

"Inco's Matte Separation Plant is a unique mineral processing facility having no process tailings stream. Each product is a high-grade concentrate with strict assay specifications which are defined by the downstream refining route. The most recent column application in the flowsheet, copper scavenging in the production of a high quality nickel concentrate, is described in detail. Testwork in pilot-scale columns (0.038 m, 0.051 m and 0.10 m in diameter) was used to develop a model of the copper scavenging system. This data was then used to simulate the performance of plant-scale equipment. The relationships thus established were confirmed by a series of plant tests in a 1.8 m diameter column. Column results consistently exceeded conventional cell performance. The modelling was extended to assess full plant production requirements and, as a result, a 2.1 m diameter column was specified for this application. Engineering design for this column is currently underway and the column is scheduled to be commissioned later in 1991.INTRODUCTIONMatte SeparationINCO's Matte Separation Plant is a part of the Copper Cliff Smelter complex near Sudbury Ontario. The flowsheet and the development of column flotation within it have been described previously (Feeley et al., 1987, Wilson et al., 1989). The plant feed is a synthetic Bessemer Matte from the Nickel smelter. This matte is slow cooled to promote grain growth and typically assays 46-52% Ni, 23-27% Cu. These elements are present primarily in sulphide form (Ni3S2 and Cu2S respectively) with some metallic alloy also precipitating from the sulphur deficient matte. Minor amounts of iron, precious metals, and nuisance elements are also present.The matte separation process is, in concept, relatively simple. Following magnetic removal of the metallic alloy from the feed, the flowsheet is designed to float a high grade copper concentrate from the nickel sulphide matrix. A simplified flowsheet of the process is shown in figure 1."

The Norddeutsche Affinerie operates an Outokumpu-Flash-Furnace as a smelting unit. The pyrometallurgical slag cleaning process is based on the slag reduction and settling in the electric furnace. Since 1972 when the slag cleaning furnace was built the throughput could be increased fourfold. However, an extensive optimisation effort is required in order to keep the copper loss low. A parameter study with a neuronal network model based on real process data was conducted to identify parameters impacting on the copper loss in the slag. It could be demonstrated that the main parameters responsible for copper loss in the final slag are fixed parameters of the flash furnace. For a better understanding of the copper loss in the electric furnace microscopic analyses of the slag structure and viscosity measurements were performed. Based on these results the reduction and settling of the copper containing droplets could be increased in both pilot plant studies and industrial scale. 4

"Within the continuous scenario of reduced aluminium price and plants production costs increase, the energy consumption optimization in the aluminum electrolytic pots continues as the main focus for the producers. Energy consumption was chosen as a key performance indicator to drive the efforts and actions for improvements. Alcoa improved the energy consumption by approximately 3% from 2005 to 2015. This improvement was a result of best practices implementation, new technologies introduction, strategic actions with plant curtailments and management practices. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the importance of the management practices for planning and operational improvements beyond the technology changes. About 10 years ago, Alcoa reorganized its approach to retain knowledge in the Smelters by using a Best Practices format. For each specific subject, a skilled team defined the minimum requirements and the Best Practices for several aspects of operation and maintenance, which affect the environment, safety, cost, customers and performance. These Best Practices were deployed to all Smelters combined with training sessions to process and operation professionals. We will describe how the Best Practices were organized, the deployment strategy used, and the approach to measure the plants’ success. We will describe the management approach that includes Manufacturing Analyses focused on 3-year potential, annual planning, and weekly monitoring of plant stability. A manufacturing analysis is organized at select plants with cross-functional participation of specialists from technical, operational, procurement and finance. The output of a manufacturing analysis includes a roadmap of enablers to improve energy efficiency. A quarterly follow-up of enabler deployment is held with the plant and resources that participated in the analysis. Annually, there is a Planning Process where energy consumption enablers are selected to be implemented during the next 3 years for each plant. A monthly critical analysis is made by the plants with regional best practice support. On a weekly basis, key performance indicators are reviewed with determination of a stability index for each plant. Any deviation signal of unstable condition is alerted and supporting resources are diverted to the plant to reverse trend with countermeasures.INTRODUCTIONDue to factors like excess aluminum in the market and lower consumption in China, the LME price is declining along the last years, as showed in Figure 1. In 2011, the price peaked at US$ 2,400/ton and since then, continues to trend down and approaching the lowest level at US$ 1,500/ton in the last 5 years."

"Buried pipelines, tanks and other similar equipment are almost always present on large scale industrial sites, including in the oil and gas fields. However, as the proverb “out of sight, out of mind” suggests, it is easy to overlook proper maintenance procedures and simply assume that corrosion protection measures in place are working correctly. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, leading to significant environmental damage and loss of production. This paper describes several cases from various industries where buried equipment failed because of corrosion, sometimes with catastrophic results. It also presents various strategies, based on experience and new research, to help predict and prevent damage to underground metallic structures.INTRODUCTION Metallic underground structures are extremely common in industrial and commercial settings for numerous reasons. Burying pipes, tanks, wires and other similar equipment has numerous advantages: it provides significant protection from mechanical damage, frees up ground space that can be used for other purposes, requires little to no support structure and is generally more esthetically pleasing. However, this last benefit can also be considered the most significant disadvantage of underground equipment: becoming invisible and forgotten. While every engineer is aware of the importance of preventive maintenance, it is also human nature to somewhat forget about equipment that is hard to inspect and assume that everything is fine. This is unfortunately not always the case and failures in industrial settings can have extremely serious consequences. While economic aspects immediately come to mind (loss of production, cleanup cost, etc.), failure of underground equipment also results in an environmental and therefore public relations nightmare, especially in the oil and gas field. Leaks that would have been considered negligible in the past can now make national headlines and perfect reliability, while probably impossible to achieve, is now the goal of most companies. While environmental damage (real or perceived) is most often associated with leaks in the oil and gas industry, it can also affect the mining world. For example, the authors have worked on a project where a buried slurry pipeline had ruptured in the ground, causing a release of perfectly inert tailings. While the economic loss was low, the leak was reported in local media and caused a public relations problem."

"Abstract- In the southern Gaspé Appalachians, gold mineralization is spatially associated with the Acadian dextral strike-slip Grand Pabos-Restigouche fault system. Two different structurally-controlled gold prospects, the Lac Arsenault and the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, are described to unravel the genesis of gold mineralization in this part of the Canadian Appalachians.At the Lac Arsenault gold prospect, gold mineralization consists of Au-As-Pb-Zn-Cu-(Ag) polymetallic fault-filled quartz veins with laminated textures emplaced in brittle-ductile sinistral X shear fractures. Mineralized veins are hosted by Middle Ordovician graywacke of the Arsenault Formation, belonging to the Dunnage Zone, the Early Paleozoic oceanic domain of the Appalachians. Terrigeneous rocks of the Arsenault are regionally metamorphosed at the lower greenshist facies and the mineralized veins are included in a zone of Fe-carbonate alteration.The Sb-Au-As mineralization of the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche gold prospect, in the southwestern Gaspé area, comprises extension veins in the extension direction emplaced in brittle conditions. Mineralized veins are hosted by calcilutite and laminated silty and argillaceous limestone of the Early Silurian part of the White Head Formation, which belongs to the Gaspé Belt, the Middle Paleozoic successor basin in the Gaspé Appalachians. Metamorphic grade of the White Head Formation in the southwestern Gaspé area is very low, but the gold mineralization is included in a zone of hydrothermal propylitic alteration which includes two Cu-skarn mineral occurrences. The Lac Arsenault gold prospect has many characteristics of "greenstone-hosted quartz-carbonate vein" deposits whereas the southwestern Gaspé area, which includes the Saint-André-de- Ristigouche gold prospect, shows affinities with the geological setting of sediment-hosted gold deposits (Carlin-like deposits). The two gold prospects are controlled by the Grand Pabos- Restigouche fault system but they were not emplaced at the same level in the crust. Acadian strikeslip fauting played a major role in their respective genesis in providing channelways for ore-bearing fluids. The recognition of the analogy of the geological setting of the southwestern Gaspé area with that of Carlin-like mineralization gives new ideas for exploration in the area and elsewhere in the Appalachians.Résumé - Dans le sud des Appalaches de la Gaspésie, on trouve des minéralisations aurifères spatialement associées au système de failles de coulissage dextre acadien de Grand Pabos-Restigouche. Deux indices très différents, Lac Arsenault et Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, sont décrits pour évaluer la genèse des minéralisations aurifères à contrôle structural de cette partie des Appalaches canadiennes. Au Lac Arsenault, la minéralisation aurifère comprend des veines polymétalliques à Au-As-Pb- Zn-Cu-(Ag) en remplissage de failles. Ces veines à texture laminaire se retrouvent dans des zones de cisaillement fragiles-ductiles senestres de type X. Les veines minéralisées sont encaissées dans les grauwackes d’âge Ordovicien moyen de la Formation d’Arsenault appartenant à la zone de Dunnage, le domaine océanique du Paléozoïque précoce des Appalaches canadiennes. Les roches terrigènes de l’Arsenault sont métamorphisées régionalement au faciès inférieur des schistes verts et les veines aurifères sont dans de larges zones d’altération dolomitique (Fe-carbonate).Dans le sud-ouest de la Gaspésie, la minéralisation à Sb-Au-As de Saint-André-de-Ristigouche est dans des veines d’extension comprises dans la direction d’extension et mises en place dans des conditions de déformation fragile. "Goldcorp – Eleonore’s 7 000 tonnes per day gold mill was started up in October 2014 and achieved commercial production in April 2015. During the first year, operation has faced challenges from grinding, flotation, sulfide cyanidation and tailing filtration to achieve targeted throughput, availability and recovery.The optimization of non-sulfide tails filter cloth lifetime and filter press availability had the most significant impact on ramp-up of both mill throughput and availability. A change in steel ball addition size to the grinding circuit was made to meet the targeted p80 of 65 µm. Various optimization efforts were conducted on the flotation circuit, intended to recover all sulfide-bearing minerals. The goal is to attain the environmental target of 0.12% sulfur in flotation tails (to eliminate acid mine drainage or AMD), while an average of 0.31% sulfur was obtained over the first months of 2015. Collectors, frothers, activators and hydrodynamic parameters were tested to improve the circuit desulfurization efficiency. High sulfide reactivity in pre-oxidation and cyanidation severely impacted dissolved oxygen levels and cyanide consumption. Studies were undertaken to understand the effects of mineralogy, grind size and leach conditions on gold dissolution kinetics and cyanide consumption. Efforts were focused on pre-oxidation to restore dissolved oxygen levels as well as optimizing both lead nitrate addition and pre-oxidation time.INTRODUCTIONGoldcorp Eleonore’s mill commissioning started in September 2014. It was considered to operate the mill at 3 500 tpd during design, as the mine was planning to operate at this throughput for the first year. However, with the stockpile of ore and a higher throughput from the mine, the mill was able to run at higher tonnage than initially anticipated.While increasing tonnage, a few bottlenecks were discovered and overcome in areas such as filtration and cyanide destruction. There were also recovery issues which were addressed in areas such as grind and sulfide leach. This paper focusses on the first complete year of operation ending September 30th 2015. A process description and the flowsheet are presented below and it will then go into detail about operational, metallurgical, mechanical and design issues experienced during the year."

First, several lines were surveyed over the known mu1.erahza-tion at the Henderson mine; the grid was then extended into the areas of interest. Several anomalous zones were located and drilled; one, of these proved to be of economic interest.

"In this study, laboratory investigation as well as numerical investigation is carried out to ascertain the transition from one mode to another for Semi-circular bend setup. Laboratory investigation is carried by varying the span length (s/2R); crack length (a/R); notch angle (a); and notch thickness (t). The specimen consists of cement, sand and water mixture in a ratio of 1:1:0.5 by weight and are prepared as per the ISRM standards (2014). Tests are conducted by a servo controlled universal testing machine at a strain rate of 0.2 mm/ min. The results are collected in terms of failure load, crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) and images of crack initiation and propagation.Image analysis of laboratory tested samples shows that crack initiates at the notch tip when the notch inclination angle is 0°. As the notch angle increases (i.e. 30° and 60°) the fracture begins to initiate behind the notch tip. The direction of crack propagation in front and back side of the sample is same for notch inclination angle is 0° whereas it differs more and more as crack inclination increases. The transition represents the change in mode of failure from mode I (0°), mode II (30°) and mixed mode I/II fracture (60°).Finite element method used to find the transition based on MTS failure criterion. The inclination of notch is varied like 40, 42, 44, 45, and 50 deg and FEM analysis shows that the transition from mode-I to Mode-II take place at 49 deg. The same procedure can be extended to find the transition from mode-II to mode-III."

"This paper deals with the reconciliation of open stope performance at Olympic Dam, South Australia, with a focus on stope stability, recovery, and operational aspects of stope reconciliation in relation to the expected or planned stope design. The observed stope performance is inconsistent with the equivalent linear overbreak sloughing criteria for assessing the performance of large open stopes. The aim is to investigate new stope performance criteria using quantitative (overbreak, underbreak, maximum depth of wall failure) and qualitative (stope productivity, observed fragmentation) information that correlates with the observed stope behaviour, providing a process for improving future stope designs.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article traite de la réconciliation de la performance des chambres ouvertes à Olympic Dam, Australie du Sud, en ciblant la stabilité des chambres, la récupération et les aspects opérationnels de la réconciliation des chambres par rapport à la conception attendue ou planifiée des chambres. La performance observée des chambres ne concorde pas avec les critères d’épaisseur équivalente du bris hors profil pour évaluer la performance de grandes chambres ouvertes. L’objectif est d’étudier de nouveaux critères de performance des chambres au moyen de données quantitatives (rupture hors profil, rupture à l’intérieur du profil planifié, profondeur maximale d’effondrement du mur) et qualitatives (productivité de la chambre, fragmentation observée) qui concordent avec le comportement observé des chambres, fournissant ainsi un processus pour améliorer les futures conceptions des chambres."

Stellite-6 coatings were formulated on two Ni-base superalloys, namely Superni 75 and Superni 600, by a shrouded plasma-spray process, and the oxidation behaviour of these coatings has been investigated in air and in an aggressive environment of Na2SO4- 60%V2O5. Accelerated oxidation tests were conducted in a silicon-carbide tube furnace under cyclic conditions at an elevated temperature of 900°C for 50 cycles. Each cycle consisted of 1 h heating and 20 min cooling in air. A thermogravimetric technique was used to approximate the oxidation kinetics. The corrosion scales were characterised by XRD, SEM/EDAX and EPMA analysis. It has been observed that the coatings nearly followed the parabolic rate law of oxidation. Overall weight gain conceived in air was just 51% of that in the aggressive environment in the case of coated Superni 75, whereas in case of coated Superni 600, the cumulative weight gain in air was found to be one-third of that in the Na2SO4-60% V2O5 atmosphere. Furthermore, the coating showed very good adherence to both of the substrates during the course of air oxidation, whereas some superficial cracks were observed near the edges of the specimens during the molten salt induced oxidation. XRD analysis revealed the presence of phase-like CoO, CoCr2O4 and Cr2O3 in the oxide scales, which are reported be protective against high-temperature oxidation. The XRD results were further supported by SEM/EDAX and EPMA.

"Rock hardness is dependent on the type and quantity of the various mineral constituents of the rock and the bond strength that exists between the mineral grains. As the book “The Complete ISRM Suggested Methods For Rock Characterization, Testing and Monitoring:1974-2006” explains, hardness is a concept of material property. As such, the quantitative measure of hardness depends on the type of the test employed.Among the three types of tests that have been used to measure the hardness of rocks and minerals: 1) indentation tests; 2) dynamic and rebound tests; 3) scratch tests, the authors of this paper chose indentation tests, more specifically the Vickers test, and complementary verified the correlation between the results of the Schmidt sclerometer tests (rebound tests) and the Vickers microhardness tests in a set of the same 9 (nine) granite rocks.The objective of this research was to verif y the correlation of one created index, based on the Vickers test that can be able to represent the rock material hardness. We know that Vickers tests determine the microhardness of individual rock minerals. A pyramidal shaped diamond is applied to the surface with a specified force. The area of the permanent residual deformation divided by the applied force is a measure of the hardness. Using the relative participation of the mineral components of the rock, we established a hardness index denominated EVM (Equivalent Vickers Microhardness).The correlation of the EVM with others strength properties and application parameters like UCS (Uniaxial Compressive Strength) to study sawability of granite blocks have presented very good results. The association of equivalent microhardness with others strength parameters, allowed to find powerful algorithms for analyzes of the rock materials behavior under diversified circumstances, as the sawability of granite blocks, as we can see in Fig. 1.Other very interesting correlations were found as the EVM values and that were obtained by the use of the Schmidt impact hammer for the superficial hardness determination."

"Abstract - This is the first reported occurrence of an active hydrothermal field in an oceanic fracture zone setting. The hydrothermal field occurs in a pull-apart basin within the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which has four distinct mineral deposit types: (1) barite mounds and chimneys, (2) barite stockwork breccia, (3) silica-barite beds, and (4) silica, barite, and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide in sediments. All deposit types contain minor amounts of sulfides. In barite stockwork, silica-barite beds, and mineralized sediment, Ba, Pb, Ag, S, Au, Zn, Cu, Hg, Tl, As, Mo, Sb, U, Cd, and Cu are enriched relative to unmineralized rocks and sediments of the BFZ. Fe and Mn are not enriched in the barite stockwork or silica-barite beds, but along with P, Co, and Mg are enriched in the mineralized sediments. Silver contents in deposits of the hydrothermal field range up to 86 ppm, gold to 0.7 ppm, zinc to 3.2%, copper to 0.8%, and barium to 22%.Mineralization occurred by diffuse, low to intermediate temperature (mostly <250°C) discharge of hydrothermal fluids through pillow lavas and ponds of mixed volcaniclastic and biosiliceous sediments. Bacterial mats were mineralized by silica, barite, and minor Fe hydroxides, or less commonly, by Mn oxyhydroxides. Pervasive mineralization of bacterial mats resulted in formation of silica- barite beds. Silica precipitated from hydrothermal fluids by conductive cooling and mixing with seawater. Sulfate, U, and rare earth elements (REEs) in barite were derived from seawater, whereas the REE content of hydrothermal silica deposits and mineralized sediments is associated with the aluminosilicate detrital fraction. Fe-, Zn-, Cu-, Pb-, and Hg-sulfide minerals, Ba in barite, and Eu in all mineralized deposits were derived from hydrothermal fluids. Manganese oxides and associated elements (Co, Sb, Mo, W, Cl, and Cu) and Fe oxides and associated elements (Be, B, P, and Mo) precipitated as the result of mixing of hydrothermal fluids with seawater."

"Abstract -The application of geophysical technology to resource delineation aims to improve the quality of resource/reserve estimates by integrating high-resolution survey methods, geophysical modeling and inversion with three-dimensional representations of geological and mineral deposit data. The use of geophysics can cost-effectively improve a geological interpretation based only on geological and sampling data. Success depends upon the ability to use geological visualization and modeling software, first to develop a three-dimensional geological model and then to modify it interactively by integrating geophysical data with the geological and sampling data.The high resolution required for mineral delineation geophysics results in a focus on borehole seismic and high-frequency electromagnetic methods. Borehole wireline logging is used to develop an understanding of the relationship between physical properties and geological description. Data from core samples and borehole wireline logs allow the construction of a three-dimensional physical property distribution, consistent with the existing geological interpretation. The three-dimensional physical property distribution is used for both geophysical forward modeling (to compare to field data) and as a starting model in iterative inversions.Advanced visualization techniques allow the simultaneous viewing of the three-dimensional physical property model, the geological information and data from which it is derived, and the geological interpretation and the geophysical results. Geophysical results may be simulated responses from a forward model or the output from a numerical inversion in the form of an updated physical property distribution. Iterative refinement of the geological interpretation is required to ensure consistency with the geological and geophysical data. "There is general consensus that as the world continues to change at an ever-increasing pace, companies must continually adapt their operations in order to remain competitive. Those that change fast enough, survive; those that don’t, perish quickly. Today, we hear that it is not worth the time preparing corporate business plans as they are out-of-date before the ink is dry. Within the corporate environment of the 1990s, we must “think” strategically, be a “learning organization”, keep our costs low, focus on our core competencies, stay as flexible as possible and create value. So-called “sustainable competitive advantages” can be obsolete before a patent is issued — if its even worthwhile patenting the advancement. This is industry in the 1990s.Now, while all this radical change has been underway in the global industrial environment, what have Canada’s universities been doing to keep pace with the change affecting one of their major stakeholders? Have they adapted their products and services to suit the new market conditions? Have they built closer links to industry to try to understand how better to serve this important client? Do they welcome industry input as to how to redefine their mission, objectives, strategies or their course contents? Do their students graduate with skills ideally tailored for the global mining industry? In the era of communication, can they write high quality reports in English, never mind speak French or Spanish?In an effort to provide Canada’s engineering faculties with a “blueprint” for the future, the Canadian Academy of Engineering pre-pared a report entitled “Engineering Education in Canadian Universities”, published in August1993, which concluded with the following recommendations:"

Since 2008 rapid advances have been made in technologies for the sensing and sorting of ores, particularly copper, and copper-related ores. Advances include significant increases in the sensitivity and throughput, specifically in the area of bulk sorting. Such advances were not possible without contemporaneous advances in the understanding of copper orebodies, in particular the understanding and quantification of the heterogeneity required within an orebody to support an effective sort, regardless of the technology deployed to do this. This paper covers fundamental knowledge in the characterization of orebodies and their ores for sorting; relationships between measures of heterogeneity and sorting response; the design of bulk sorting systems that can exploit this heterogeneity to add value to copper operations; and, a quantification of the value that can be generated from bulk sorting at a case study mine. INTRODUCTION Society currently puts increasing pressure on industries to move towards cleaner and more efficient means of production, and the mining industry is no exception. Mining additionally faces other factors increasing the pressure to be more efficient: high-grade and easily accessible reserves have become largely depleted, therefore the mined grade at operations across most commodities, including and in particular copper, is decreasing. Additionally, the grade of new discoveries in the sector continues to decrease (Schodde, 2011). Factor in the high capital cost of processing facilities and the low levels of efficiency of current grinding circuits, and the situation for such mines becomes dire. Sorting, by maximizing the amount of ore extracted while simultaneously reducing the waste content in ore delivered to downstream processes (whether simply transport and crushing, or more sophisticated circuits such as grinding and flotation or leaching) has long been of interest to mining operations and projects struggling with low margins (Bamber, 2012). However, until recently sorting technologies that are both cost effective and effective at such high throughputs have not been commercially available.

Zinc production by Cominco Ltd. began in Trail in 1916 at a rate of 55 metric tonnes per day (t/d) and was increased ,in several increments until now electrowinning capacity approaches 750 t/d. The last increment, 40-t/d high-productivity electrowinning plant, was commissioned in 1974. In this paper, the design and operating experience with both the existing electrowinning plant and the new high-productivity plant are described.

A typical process adopted at nickel plant is the processing of nickel-copper mattes and converter mattes using the following technology: pressure oxidative leaching (POX), solvent extraction (SX), electrowinning (EW), cobalt recovery, and solutions purification. As a result of multi-stage atmospheric and autoclave process leaching, copper-nickel separation is achieved. Cobalt and nickel are further separated by SX. Copper in the process can be removed as copper cake (Cu-cake), which is a by-product with high content of valuable metals. In the current paper, a method combining atmospheric and pressure leaching of Cu-cake in sulfuric-acid media is discussed. Suggested method allows to obtain high copper extraction (>98%), with leach residue containing precious metals and PGMs. Sulfuric acid media was chosen to make the suggested technology adaptable for the primary POX-SX-EW circuit. The initial Cu-cake was analysed and a range of process parameters (t = 25–190°C; PO2 = 0–7 bar) investigated to achieve the optimal conditions for leaching process at the ambient as well as at increased pressure. As a result, an initial process block diagram for the treatment of Cu-cake with high copper leaching efficiency and low metal losses is provided. INTRODUCTION The conventional technology for nickel sulphide ore processing includes the following main stages: froth flotation, matte smelting and converting. The subsequent processing of nickel converter matte is possible using fundamentally different approaches - hydrometallurgical (Llanos, Queneau & Rickard, 1974; Rademan, Lorenzen & Van Deventer, 1999; Kshumaneva, Kasikov, Neradovskii & Belyaevskii, 2009; Dutrizac & Chen, 2013) and pyrometallurgical (Tsymbulov, Knyazev, Tsemekman & Golov, 2007). Hydrometallurgical approach in comparison with pyro-process has several advantages, such as reduced environmental load, reduced PGM losses, increased copper and nickel extraction. Typically, hydrometallurgical technologies include leaching, solvent extraction as well as nickel and cobalt recovery in metallic form by electrowinning or hydrogen reduction or as valuable metal salts via crystallization process (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson & Davenport, 2011).

This paper describes studies of zinc concentrate oxidizing pressure leaching using the method of mathematical modeling. The concept of a kinetic function was taken as a basis for mathematical modeling of the leaching process. The kinetic function describes dependence of the unreacted component share OJ on the relative time x (the relative time is the ratio of the test duration and the time of complete dissolution). This kinetic function is determined in accordance with the results of batch laboratory tests. The laboratory tests have been carried out on zinc concentrate produced from Kazakhstan zinc-copper ores. Zinc concentrate consisted mainly of three types of minerals: sphalerite (70%), pyrite (13%) and chalcopyrite (10%). Oxidation reactions of sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite have been considered as principal ones. The kinetic characteristics of the process (kinetic function, reaction order, activation energy, duration of complete dissolution of the concentrate components) have been calculated in the course of laboratory tests. The mathematical model was used for estimation of the main technological leaching process parameters (such as process rate, degree of metals extraction, autoclave capacity, heat balance, etc.). Mathematical modeling based on the kinetic function concept allows safe designing of metallurgical equipment and scaling the technology to industrial capacity.
