"Quebec Cartier Mining operates a pelletizing plant in Port-Cartier, QC. Grinding, agglomeration and pellets induration are the three main steps in the preparation of iron oxide pellets. In 1998, following different recommendations, the company increased the speed of one of its ball mill in order to increase the grinding efficiency of the machine. As expected, the increased speed lead to an increase of the power draught, which did not produce the expected increase of fineness of grind, neither its allows to increase the mill throughput. The change of behaviour of the mill could hardly be understood by comparison of discharge size distribution at initial and modified mill rotation speed. On the other hand, the use of the selection function from a population balance model provides an insight of the changes that occurred in the mill. This paper reviews the various steps required for the estimation of a grinding mill selection function. Results of the calibration to Quebec Cartier grinding mills show that the increase in the mill speed leads to higher rate of breakage of coarse particles, at the expenses of less efficient breakage of medium and fine size particles. In the case of the studied mill, breakage of coarse particles was probably not the critical step of the mill operation. INTRODUCTIONOre size reduction is the major energy consumption step in any mineral processing operations (Austin et al., 1984). Size reduction is required to either liberate valuable minerals from the gangue minerals in which they are imbedded, or to increase the specific surface of the ground material. Plant engineers continuously face the challenge to find grinding machines, operating conditions or grinding circuit flowsheet configurations that could improve the size reduction process at lower energy or m6dia consumption."

"INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the ALSANDS PROJECT, with emphasis on the approach taken in the design of the Primary Extraction and Froth Treatment Plants.The Alsands Consortium (Table 1) is a Joint Venture of 9 companies formed in 1978, with its prime objective to obtain governmental approval and concomitant suitable commercial terms to build and operate a third oil sands mining and upgrading facility in the Athabasca Oil Sands Deposit.Alsands Energy Limited is the Consortium Manager.The Alsands Project will provide about 10 percent of Canada's forecast crude oil production by 1990, which will be 20,700 cubic metres per day (130,000 barrels/day) of synthetic crude oil plus 1,100 cubic metres per day (7,000 barrels/day) of liquid petroleum gases. To construct Alsands the time required by construction labour, field non-manual and engineering support personnel as well as those trades involved in project-related urban development will total approximately 100,000,000 manhours or 50,000 man years. During regular operations, 4,800 people will be employed by Alsands.Approximately $13 billion will be spent to design, construct and start up the plant by the scheduled 1988 completion date."

"Reeves and Platt1 stated that dense medium separation is one of the most complex unit processes in mineral processing today particularly if cyclones are used. It is also the most efficient gravity concentrating process available to process engineers. The complexity of the process and large number of design and operating variables means that the process has largely remained more an art than a science. Dense medium separation is well established in the diamond, coal and iron ore industries but is gaining popularity as a pre-concentration step in other industries. The maintenance issues are addressed that will affect the efficiency of the operation.INTRODUCTION The purpose of the dense medium separation (DMS) process is to separate the valuable material from the waste based on gravity differences. However, the specific gravity difference between the two fractions must be large enough to achieve high efficiencies. Heavy particles sink through the dense liquid and light particles float. DMS is also used for the pre-concentration of minerals before further downstream processes like communition, in order to minimise the treatment costs. Examples are the pre-concentration of diamond ores or metalliferous ores like nickel, copper and cobalt. Dense medium separation is also used to upgrade the material to meet different market specifications, for example in coal and iron ore applications. A typical dense medium separation process for a diamond application is shown in Figure 1."

"Xstrata Nickel’s Raglan operation, northern Québec, achieved paymetal recovery gains in 2007 by switching the collector from potassium amyl xanthate to sodium isobutyl xanthate. To follow on from that position, Xstrata Process Support (XPS) and A. Di Feo of Raglan proposed that a mixed xanthate system be formulated and tested towards further performance gains. This work selected ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the candidates. An optimized ratio of these was to be determined by a designed experiment. This suggestion was based on an abundance of published literature that reported mixed collector systems outperformed single ones. A partial factorial design was used to configure four test conditions and a mid-square for the flotation work. The testwork was conducted using High Confidence Flotation Testing. The raw data were analyzed and modelled by Design-Expert software. An optimum ratio of 1.6:1.0 by mass (1.32:1.0 in molar terms) of isobutyl:ethyl xanthate was determined. Without this modelling, the optimum ratio would have been missed. Results obtained with the new baseline flotation test using this optimized mixture showed a 3.3% Ni recovery gain in the bypass concentrate and more than 1% recovery gain for PGM over the single PIBX system. This system has been proposed for and accepted as a plant scale trial in the first half of 2010.INTRODUCTIONConcentrator OperationsMilling and flotation of sulphide ores ahead of smelting and refining is a common practice. "When certain gold ores containing pyrite, graphite, humates and fumates or other organic compounds which are possibly adsorbed on clay minerals are treated with aqueous solution of alkali metal cyanide, the aurocyanide complex which forms is adsorbed by these ""pregrobbing"" species in the ore. Dissolution of gold proceeds until chemical equilibrium is attained between the cyanide complex adsorbed by the ore and in solution.Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) may be used to decrease the adsorptive activity of the prerobbing species in the ore. It has successfully improved recovery at Holt-McDermott Mine and is highly biodegradable.INTRODUCTION Precious metal-bearing ores containing preg-robbing species are poorly amenable to standard cyanidation techniques. The ""preg-robbing"" impurities with which they are associated tend to adsorb the gold cyanide complexes and carry them through the circuit to the tailings. Also, gold may be associated with these impurities in the ore and not be leached by the cyanide complexing agents used in conventional cyanidation techniques.Methods for dealing with the problem of preg-robbinq impurities in gold ores are:Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), in which granular activated carbon is added to compete with preg-robbing species for the gold cyanide complexes. This process can improve gold recovery in mildly preg-robbing ores especially when fine carbons with very high activities are used. However, with severely graphitic ore, the carbon associated with the rock may outperform the granular activated charcoal.Chemical Oxidation, in which the ore is subjected to preliminary chemical oxidation techniques to oxidize carbonaceous materials using such diverse reagents including ozone, sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, chlorine gas, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorates and oxygen prior to subjecting the oxidized ore to standard cyanidation treatment to extract gold. This is generally a costly method and will not prove economical on a low-grade ore."

This paper shares the experience of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) Field Surveillance Branch over the past few years in building relationships with Aboriginal communities. Our goal is to provide and encourage best practices that may benefit you and your organization and result in strong, mutually beneficial relationships with a focus on Aboriginal communities. Historical information provides insight that aids in establishing effective working relationships with Aboriginal communities. An important component is appreciation of the perspective of these communities, which is achieved through awareness training. The use of local Aboriginal resource people as part of the training is recommended. A plan that is supported by management and staff is essential and lays the foundation for successful relationships. However, the plan must be flexible enough to change as circumstances warrant. The concept of having local people in communities address local issues is essential. This ?grass roots? approach, combined with the goal of exceeding a community?s expectations with respect to addressing issues, will go a long way to establish trust and credibility. Measuring the effectiveness of this work is the final building block to complete the picture.

Vale Inco?s Coleman Mine 153 Orebody is a narrow vein deposit with a dip that varies from 30 to 70 degrees. It has a strike length of 1200-feet and the current mining extends from the 4250 level to 5100 level. The primary mining method is mechanized cut-and-fill although drift-and-fill is also used in wider sections of the ore zone. The ore body is divided into six main mining horizons with an average of three mining blocks on each cut. There are some interesting rock mechanics challenges related to mining upward from the 4550 level and these challenges are increasing as the mining front progresses toward the 4400 level. The mining of the 4550 block is currently at cut 13 whereby the crown pillar thickness is approximately 60-feet. Significant factors including increased stress levels in the crown pillar, the change in the orebody dip at this level and a recently indentified geological structure in the footwall, have all combined to introduce seismic activity in the footwall of 4550 level. Closer studies revealed a consistent trend of seismicity that was further examined with core logging and Acoustic TeleViewer technology. The data from these assessment tools disclosed a geological structure that is influencing the mining environment. This paper reviews the seismic analysis for the 4550 level mining zone and the subsequent procedures used to locate the new geological structure. The paper also discusses the key mining practices used to successfully mine cut 13 of 4550 level and briefly reviews the studies that are underway to up-date the mine design for continued extraction of high-grade ore in a safe and productive manner.

"In our increasingly competitive market, attempts to improve productivity by increasing axle loads have placed more severe demands on rails. CP Rail thus requires stronger, tougher, and more wear-resistant rails from steel manufacturers. The choice of any rail steel is always a compromise between technical and economic factors. The technical assessment of a candidate rail consists of laboratory and field testing. Laboratory evaluation of rail steels cannot adequately model many service conditions and must, therefore, be supplemented by long-term field testing. The field testing conducted on CP Rail is the subject of this paper.Long-term, in-track, assessment of candidate rail steels begins with the selection and re-laying of a test curve representative of the intended service with both the candidate rail and a control rail steel (i.e. the present intermediate or premium rail standard). The wear performance of the candidate rail is evaluated, in relation to that of the control rail, using data obtained with a rail profilometer developed by the Research and Development Department of CP Rail. Qualitative observations are also periodically made to evaluate the relative susceptibilities of the two rail types to surface defect formation. Testing continues until stable metal loss patterns are achieved. Relative life predictions are then made and detailed monitoring of the test site is discontinued.CP Rail's in-track assessment program for premium rails has resulted in the establishment of a new CP Rail premium rail standard - low-alloy, head-hardened, rails have replaced high alloy rails. The wear/fatigue lives of these new premium rails exceed those of our previous standard by more than 50%, and they also exhibit excellent weldability. CP Rail will continue to evaluate new premium and intermediate strength rail products."

"Biotechnological approaches to decommissioning of mine waste management areas are presented in the context of sustainable environmental management. Improved design of waste sites and environmental management paves the way for the application of new technological approaches. Mining wastes are better confined, effluent quantity is reduced and the quality is expected to improve in the future. The biologically mediated treatments focus on the creation of conditions inside the waste management area which lead to the confinement of the contaminants in the inactive tailings ponds and seepage collection ponds, as well as pits or other disturbed areas which were part of the operating conditions.Biogeochemical reactions lead to three fundamental water treatment steps mediated biogeochemically , alterations in chemistry which lead to formation of particles, which then have to flocculate and be assisted to collect in the bottom of the ponds. Microbially active sediments are installed to assist particulate formation and serve as sinks for metals. In deeper sediment strata, stable forms of metals are created. Biological polishing is used to collect the particulates and relegate them to the sediment. Examples will be given of the application of these processes, to waste rock piles, open pits and tailings ponds. This paper attempts to show that, through the integration of applied biotechnological advances and the application of new approaches to decommissioning, reductions of environmental impacts by mining are possible. * Note: this paper has been presented at the 13th Annual Meeting of BIOMINETIntroductionThe role of biotechnology in decommissioning of mining waste management areas should be placed in the context of sustainable development. "In December, 1999 Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) commissioned a new paste /cement backfill plant to supplement the existing sand backfill system for the cut and fill mining operation at it’s Nye, Montana mine. The new plant uses the Baker Process Deep Cone TM Paste Thickener to thicken the total concentrator tailings from 30% solids slurry to a 71% solids paste. This paper describes both general paste formation concepts and the evolution of the SMC paste plant operation from original design criteria, through problem solving and plant modifications, to the operation of the existing plant.Although the original process design was not effective for consistently producing and delivering acceptable paste to the stopes for backfill, SMC was able to make the mechanical and process modifications which allow the plant to now produce and deliver an acceptable product to the stopes. Ongoing test work is targeted at increasing the pumping range of the system, increasing the paste solids concentration from the Deep Cone Paste Thickener and reducing the operating and maintenance costs of the system.INTRODUCTIONThe authors would like to thank both Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) and Baker Process for their assistance in the preparation of this paper. This phrase has always appealed to me, not only for its resonance but because it seems to place in some perspective man's place in the cosmos. As we go about our daily occupations and as we meet here tonight, we must agree that we have come a long way slowly at first through the ages of change but with a quickening pace that has brought to man's know-ledge and use, within the last hundred years, more ideas, more material advantages, more opportunities and more comforts than were ever imagined or dreamed of in those long corridors of time. Looking back to the dawn of his-tory, a mere five thousand years ago, there is one aspect of the birth and growth of civilization that has particular significance for the miner and the metallurgist.

Rockbursts are a major hazard in deep hard rock underground mining and tunneling. To date a significant number of rockbursts still defy conventional explanations. A review of rockburst case histories in the literature has shown that pillars and tabular excavations under shear loading are prone to rockbursting in situations where they are least expected under conventional knowledge of rockburst causes. Despite the evidence of the effects of shear loading on underground infrastructure, and the frequency of their occurrence, little is known about how this loading mechanism causes such large magnitude events and extensive damage. In this paper analytical and numerical modeling are used to understand the behaviour of pillars and tabular excavations under shear loading. The numerical modelling results show that pillars under shear loading are less confined than their equivalents in loaded in pure compression in the same geologic environment, and are therefore more brittle and weak. For tabular excavations under shear loading, the behaviour depends on whether such excavations are continuous, co-planar or offset with rock bridges. Analytical results based on slit theory show releasable potential energy in tabular excavations increases nonlinearly with excavation half-span. The study results are important for the safe and economic extraction of orebodies under shear loading.

"In January 1985, Equity Silver Mines Limited began operation of a cyanidation circuit to scavenge precious metals from the flotation tailings. At present, this process is treating 270,000 tonnes of tailings per month and is recovering in excess of 0.20 grams of gold per tonne. To obtain these results Equity is operating a carbon-in-leach circuit that utilizes pressure stripping, zinc precipitation acid washing and thermal reactivation. A cyanide destruction circuit is also required to minimize the deleterious effects on reclaim water in the flotation stage. This paper describes the existing scavenger plant, and details the start-up problems encountered and the modifications made to correct these problems.INTRODUCTIONEquity Silver Mines Limited , a 68% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited , is located 38 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The geographic location of Equity Silver Mines is shown in figure #1. In September 1980, production first began with the ore being supplied from the Southern Tail open pit. In March 1984, the Southern Tail deposit had reached its economic pit depth, and since then ore has been supplied by the Main Zone pit the gold mineralization in the Main Zone is less refractory than the Southern Tail and cyanidation of the flotation tailing appeared to be a viable alternative.An extensive test program was undertaken and the results confirmed that considerable gold and silver values were amenable to cyanide leaching. A feasibility study showed that these values could be economically recovered and the detailed engineering work began."

"This paper investigates the froth function in flotation and the associated upgrading process. Flotation literature has revealed that one of the main functions of the froth phase is the cleaning of bubble-particle aggregates by rejection of entrained material. The cleaning and transport processes across the froth phase exert straining forces on these aggregates on their way up to the froth surface. These forces will impact on the recovery of bubble-particle aggregates.The grade at the top of the froth (TOF) is a parameter related to the quality of particles collected by bubbles in the pulp zone (true flotation). It has recently been demonstrated that TOF corresponds to the maximum practically attainable grade described by the recovery-grade (or enrichment ratio) curve. TOF lumps all the processes experienced by the bubble-particle aggregates before reaching the launder concentrate. This paper describes a methodology for quantifying flotation performance by means of the top of the froth sample - a touch of froth.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation may be the most important mineral processing technique, but its theory is complex and is not completely understood even though many aspects have been studied and reviewed (Teague, 1998; Wills, 1992).Two distinct particulate systems prevail in the flotation process: a pulp phase and a froth phase (Figure 1). The pulp zone had been studied extensively; however, it is only recently that techniques to measure the froth zone performance have been developed (Contini et al., 1988; Falutsu and Dobby, 1992; Feteris et al., 1987; Seaman, 2002; Vera et al., 1999b).Flotation involves a number of mass transfer processes, occurring in the pulp phase and the froth phase. The formation of the froth and its subsequent removal are considered to be two important steps of the process. Phenomena that occur in the froth phase are known to affect flotation performance significantly (Cutting et al., 1981).Because the froth has a high free surface energy (as a result of the extensive interfacial surface between liquid and air), it appears thermodynamically unstable. The foaming is a dynamic balance, as new bubbles are added continuously from the pulp, while others disappear from the top. Under steady-state conditions, the volumes of added and subtracted air are equal (Booth, 1953)."

"High demand for metals is driving the exploitation of lower grade and more complex orebodies. These projects are often the initiatives of junior mining companies with limited financial resources. In addition, existing operations seek to enhance revenue from their existing metal recovery operations, through the production of value-added by-product metals and chemicals. Typically, hydrometallurgical circuits, often with novel chemistry, are required to exploit these new ores, to produce the multiplicity of products that will make a marginal project economical, or to increase the product range of an existing operation. Often, the mineral processing engineer is given the task of coordinating the development of a back-end hydrometallurgical flowsheet for their mineral processing project. This paper discusses the objectives that companies have when they commission the operation of a hydrometallurgical pilot plant. The paper goes on to enumerate some of the principal differences between mineral processing and hydrometallurgical pilot plants and the effect these have on the design, operability and potential pilot plant outcomes. Important factors include working with chemically reactive solutions and pulps, elevated temperatures operation, changing rheological properties of slurries, the complexity of integrated circuit flowsheets with long hold-up times and multiple recycle streams, and the need in some cases for extreme attention to purity and cleanliness. Examples will be drawn from the extensive experience base of SGS Minerals Services at the Lakefield site, in piloting both mineral processing and hydrometallurgical process flowsheets.INTRODUCTIONWe are currently experiencing a period of strong growth in the demand for metals. This in turn is turning the spotlight on a great many smaller mining companies and mining promotion ventures trying to tap into the rising metal demand. Some of these companies want to develop their properties and recover metals while others want to develop to the point that a major company will take an interest, or in some cases buy them out completely.With the heightened interest in metals, many orebodies that have been known about for years are being reconsidered for exploitation. Often, the reason they have not been developed to date is because of difficult metallurgy and marginal grades leading to marginal economic viability. In both cases the key that unlocks the resources is often the application of a novel metallurgical flowsheet, often a hydrometallurgical flowsheet."

For the past eight years, No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Depart~ of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. °This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room-and-pillar method was employed, and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labour troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine, was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In ?the interval, development work for longwall retreating below the 5,900-foot level was vigorously pushed.

"This paper focuses on determining the favorable geological and hydrogeological conditions for forming uranium occurrences in the Froqlos-Jabal Abou Rabah region, Palmyrides, Syria. Eighty rock samples from this area were analyzed by spectrometric gamma-ray technique to determine the radioactive concentrations of eU and eTh, and of %K. Uranium concentrations in shallow and deep groundwaters were also determined. High uranium concentrations were registered owing to the presence of phosphatic outcrops in the study region. The uranium migration trends and its remobilization were analyzed through the analysis of the behavior of eU, eTh, and their ratio. A positive relationship between eU and eU/eTh, and a negative relationship between eTh and eU/eTh in geological formations of different ages supports the secondary remobilization of uranium. The role of groundwater movement in transportation and redeposition of uranium mineralization is discussed: deep waters are less oxidizing than near-surface waters, and do not appear to have significantly remobilized uranium. This indicates that the source of secondary uranium mineralization is surficial or near surficial, and is mainly related to the leaching of outcropping phosphatic layers.Integration of the results with established radioactive and geological sections reveals four radioactive anomalous zones: north Froqlos, Kherbet Hannora, northwestern flanks of Jabal Abou Rabah (Kherbet Al-Hajar), and the northwestern limit of the Ghuntor depression. The high uranium concentration in north Froqlos is because of its original presence in the phosphate beds and extensive fracturing, which allows groundwaters to penetrate and remobilize the uranium. High uranium concentrations in the other three locations are caused by the presence of evaporites and capillary action, which draws solutions upwards and causes redeposition as surface crusts (gypcrete)."

The world wide growth dynamics and the continuously growing demand for energy, results in increasing energy prices. Looking from this point, the efficient exploitation of fossil fuel deposits has become a more important factor to the production of energy raw materials than ever before. This shall be reached by an increase of the automation degree of the bucket wheel excavator in the open pit mining as well as a quality increase of the entire mining process chain. A further optimization of this operation can only be achieved by gathering additional information about the input parameters. The earlier and more exact the description of the input parameter, the greater the effectiveness of the entire process chain. To address this major issue, the RWE Power AG assigned the Institute for Transportation and Automation Technology with the research project "SIMT, Sensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the Interfaces" [Kes07]. Presently, the control of the bucket wheel excavator is carried out manually by the operator, as well as the visual identification of the different geological layers and the energy raw materials. In this paper, a sensor-system is introduced, which was developed in order to transfer the manual material identification and detection of interfaces into an automatic online procedure. A special challenge and the main focus of this contribution is the integration of this sensor system into a bucket of the bucket wheel excavator. For measuring procedures where direct contact with the in situ material is necessary, the sensor has to be integrated into the bucket. Since direct contact with the material is not necessary, it can be integrated next to the bucket wheel. The results of a preliminary study show that although there is a broad spectrum of sensor technologies for material and interface identification, only a few are suitable for an application in on-line measuring at the bucket wheel excavator. Taking into consideration the demands on the sensor technology, the studies carried out and comparable applications of individual sensor technologies which have already taken place in practice, the integration of the following measuring systems have been realized: ground penetrating radar / reflection measurements, geo electric, resistance geo electric technology. The solution developed in the research project offers for the first time the direct integration of sensor systems into the bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. It will now be possible to test other measurement methods and sensors, not only for the ones already mentioned. As an example the integration of a triaxial accelerometer to measure the solid borne sound and vibrations concerning the cutting of different materials will be shown.
