Ozone has been proposed to pretreat refractory ores before the cyanidation process for precious metals extraction. As pyrargyrite is one of the silver species most common in Mexican refractory ores, the ozonization of this silver sulfide was studied. The effect of pH and ozone concentration on silver dissolution was evaluated by means of a factorial experimental design. Two levels of sulfuric acid concentration and ozone in gas concentration were evaluated: 0.18 and 0.72 mol/L of acid and 0.054 and 0.077 gO3/L, respectively. The highest silver dissolution was obtained when using the higher acid and ozone concentration.

"In the first half of 1990, Cambior earned $1104 million, or $0.37 per share, on revenues of$66.4 million. The company's strong cash position, attained late in 1989 and in the beginning of1990 through the exercise of warrants, put working capital at $83.8 million as of June 30, 1990. Long-term debt was reduced by over $10 million during the weak gold market, leaving the company with a debt to equity ratio of only 0.03. Production for the six first months of 1990 was 107 720 oz. Au, an increaseof24% over the corresponding period in 1989.Financial Profile/Results and Corporate Financial StrategiesTotal revenue for the 1989 fiscal year was $116,883,000 compared to $109,848,000 for 1988. The 1989 results achieved despite a lower average gold price, resulted from a higher level of commercial gold production and a 115% increase in investment income over 1988. Investment income rose to $3,568,000 in 1989 due to higher levels of cash assets.Cambior's mine operating costs increased 19% to $68,561,000 in 1989 from $57,472,000 in 1988. This increase resulted from rising operating costs at the Doyon Mine ($250/oz to $274/oz) due to the shift from open pit to underground operations, as well as from the start -up of three new mines with relatively higher costs. These costs have reached a stable level that should be maintained for the next few years.In 1989, net exploration expenses were $6,838,000, down 31070 from 1988, partially due to the Canadian tax reforms introduced since 1987. Depreciation and depletion grew by $1,432,000 in 1989, reflecting a higher volume of commercial production from the Pierre Beauchemin, Lucien C. Beliveau and Chimo mines.Net earnings for 1989 amounted to $17,661,000 or $0.73 per share compared to $17,438,000 or $0.74 per share in 1988.Cambior has an exceptionally liquid and strong balance sheet. As at December 31, 1989, net working capital stood at $85.6 million, with a total assets base of $338.6 million. With a long-term debt (including gold loans) of $21.5 million and shareholders' equity of $277.2 million, Cambior has a debt to equity ratio of 8%. All but about $100,000 of long-term debt is in the form of gold loans.The total market value for Cambior's stock as at September 10, 1990, stands at $420million, based on recent stock market prices. Mining methods are explained, major mining equipment is listed and production rates are given. Reclamation methods and results are described. IntroductionThe coal mines of Kaiser Resources Ltd. are located in the southeast corner of British Columbia. All present mining is in the Sparwood area, where operations began in 1900 with the opening of the Michel underground mines. Production increased rapidly at first, then went through successive periods of depression and prosperity. Following are the highlights. Dans les rejets de flottation, cela justifie par contre de 15 à 25% des pertes totales en cuivre, Ie reste se retrouvant sous forme de tres petits globules de sulfures de cuivre ou de cuivre métallique, en moyenne de 2 à 3 micromètres de diamètre et bien emprisonnes dans Ie verre.SUMMARYThe slag produced by the Noranda continuous smelting process usually contains about 5% copper. It is processed as a conventional copper ore at the concentrator of Noranda Mines. The flotation tailings still often contain more than 0.3% Cu. The slag is mainly constituted by magnetite, fayalite and a siliceous glass. Evidently, the copper occurs mostly as sulphides and, to a lesser extent, as metallic copper. However the glass contains a small amount of this metal in solution, between 0.14 and 0.33% on an average, depending upon the investigated sample. This represents scarcely 1% of the total copper in the crude slag, but as much as 15 to 25% of this metal in the flotation tailings, in which the major part of the copper occurs as very small globules of copper sulphides or metallic copper with an average diameter of about 2 to 3 um and well-locked in the glass."

"As demands upon the earth's natural resources continue to grow, exploration companies, mining organizations and others face the problem of the need to tackle increasingly more difficult strata to open up new reserves. Innovations in materials technology and tool design have steadily improved this capability, but none perhaps so drastically as a recently introduced cemented carbide in which tool wear resistance and/or toughness can be tailored precisely to the user's drilling needs.Introduction Until about forty years ago, the bulk of rock-drilling operations had to be carried out with hardened steels. Short life between re-grinds was common especially in abrasive rock formations. Shortly after World War II, Sandvik, Sweden, pioneered the development of sintered (cemented) carbide-tipped steel tools as a means of improving drill tool life. The new material was a composite of tungsten carbide and cobalt, the latter acting as a 'cement' to bind the wear-resistant carbide grains together, and the composite, in turn, was brazed to the steel. The immediate effect was a 100-fold increase in the service life of the tool.Intractable ProblemsWhile the carbide-tipped tools served the mining and quarrying industries admirably there were, nonetheless, some seemingly intractable limitations. The greater the wear resistance of the material - the quality for which it is selected - the more brittle it is. Also, rocks vary widely in hardness and abrasiveness and no single tool, either in terms of material or shape, meets every need. Specifically, for fast penetration of non-abrasive rock, toughness must be combined with a relatively sharp tool prome. Highly abrasive rock, on the other hand, demands a substantially broad area of extremely wear-resistant material on the tool if long bit life is to be assured. "In July 2004 workers at the ABI Smelter in Bécancour (Quebec, Canada) went on strike. Contingency plan were ready to face the situation and plan was done to operate one potline out of three. Two lines were stopped; keeping in mind the restart on cold metal after the strike was over. The subject to be presented and shared includes a summary of work organization including training, schedule of restart, pot cleaning, pot preparation, crash start method, follow up after crash start, safety and environment. This major project has been a very big challenge. It shows that people involvement is a must and the key success. It is then true to say : ""People who believe in success will work and act in order to get there"" and ""People who don't believe in success will act in such a way to fail"" Then both will prove they were right to think their own way ! Sharing such experience can be interesting because it's a true story and people like true stories."

The goal of this paper is to present the carbon footprint of Chilean cathodic copper, as a function of the electricity generation mix, ore grade, and process efficiency. Ore grades and acid leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning (LX-SX-EW) yields in the range 0.5-1.0% and 60-80%, respectively, were considered here. Additionally, electricity supply from two Chilean suppliers, SING (1.0 ton CO2/MWh) and SIC (0.4 ton CO2/MWh) was assessed. Simulation results show that oxide plants located in northern Chile, served by the SING network, feature carbon footprint within 4.3 - 11.4 MWh I ton cathodic copper, as compared with 3.5 - 9.3 MWh I ton copper in plants served by SIC. The footprint was found to increase as ore wade and process yields decrease.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. Copper mineralization occurs at several places along the shore of Notre Dame bay, Newfoundland, and at one time formed the basis of a considerable mining industry. The sources of the mineralizing solutions and the structural settings of some of the deposits have not been clearly understood. This paper reports new investigations into the origin and structure of the deposits between Bett's cove and Stocking harbour, in a strip about ten miles long and two miles wide along the western shore of Notre Dame bay. The most complete previous descriptions of the area are those of Snelgrove (1929, 1931, 1938), Douglas, Williams and Rove (1940), and the writer (1947). The discovery of the Bett's Cove deposits took place about 1860, soon after the discovery of the well-known Tilt Cove deposits to the north. Several other small prospects were found between Bett's cove and Stocking harbour between 1880 and 1910. At Bett's cove, active mining began in 1875 and a small smelting plant was built near the mine in 1877. .Mining operations came to an abrupt halt in 1883 after a major cave-in. In 1900, and again in 1906, attempts were made to drain the old workings and reopen the mine but were abandoned long before completion. Total production amounted to about 130,000 tons of hand-picked copper ore which averaged about ten per cent copper, and 2,450 tons of pyrite (Snelgrove, 1938, pp. 52-55).

A short description of the overwind detaching hook, together with illustrations of the operation of detachment are presented.MaterialsWinding engine ratings of 8000 h .p. and large capacity shafts 2000 m in depth (4000 m depths have already been reached and it may be necessary to go to 6000 m) and up to ten conveyances are not uncommon today. Loads of 100 or even 200 tons hoisted at low speeds are possible within the near future. Some of these appliances are designed to protect lives and installations in hazardous conditions when, due to human or mechanical fault, a malfunction occurs in the system. In addition, such equipment includes suspension gear of various kinds designed to anchor and apply high mechanical tensions to numerous steel ropes installed in shafts necessary either for the safe passage of conveyances or for balancing purposes when heavy loads are in motion.No unique metallurgical problems are presented in underground mining operations, but they have two special characteristics that influence the metallurgical aspects of the de sign of suspension gear and other equipment concerned in the transport of men and materials. (1) Any uncontrolled release of energy caused by the unexpected failure of a component is more likely to injure personnel and cause costly damage to installations in the narrow confines of an underground mine shaft. (2) Some mechanical equipment in mines, tends to be overloaded in service and suffer plastic distortion."

In 1984 and 1985, two 7.6m diameter TBM tunnels were driven from the Donkin-Morien peninsula in Nova Scotia to access the Harbour coal seam. The design of the ground support was based on identifying zones of rock failure through the application of the Hoek Brown failure criterion and the early use of finite element analyses. In 1992, the mining project was abandoned and the tunnels allowed to flood. Monitoring data from the tunnel was subsequently used as a case study in the development of the concepts of brittle rock behaviour. In 2007, the tunnels were pumped out as part of a feasibility study into the reintroduction of longwall mining into the coalfield. There is a good match between observations of the collapse zones in the roof and sides of the tunnel and a simple elastic analysis using brittle parameters, a spalling limit of 5, and a low independent shear modulus. The brittle analyses form the basis of the design for the resupport of the tunnels.

The advantages of generating and distributing electrical energy direct from the coal-fields so closely affects the mining industry that a few remarks on the unbalanced phases of coal distribution is worthy of attention. The value of coal imported into Canada from 1912 to 1921 exceeded the sum of $580,000,000. In 1922 Ontario imported 1,640,000 tons of anthracite and 9,440,000 tons of bituminous coal. I submit that the use of Saskatchewan lignite in an electrical super-power plant equipped for the carbonizing of coal, and disposal of excess gases would be the commencement of a solution of the fuel shortage in Ontario. As Saskatchewan becomes more and more populated and manufacturing increases, the amount of by-product carbonized fuel available for shipment to Ontario will increase, and its shipment to that province would decrease the trade deficit of the national balance sheet. If and when this is carried out it will mean a better and wider market for Alberta fuels in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The method of feeding blast-furnaces to be described below is simply the application of well-known principles, and an attempt to carry that application to its logical conclusion. It does not involve radical changes in equipment, nor does it require unusual skill on the part of the furnaceman. In fact, much of its value lies in its very simplicity. Before giving details of the method it will be well to consider briefly the conditions under which it was used at the Nickelton plant of the British America Nickel Corporation, in the Sudbury district, before that plant closed down. The Sudbury nickel ore consists chiefly of pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite in a gangue of norite or greenstone. The proportions of sulphide and gangue vary widely in different mines, the former constituting about 45 per cent of the total in the British America sorted ore. The gangue is fairly uniform in analysis, carrying about 55 per cent Si02, 18 per cent A120 3, 13 per cent FeO and smaller quantities of CaO, MgO, Na20 and K20. The ore has been frequently described as refractory, a word which seems suitable when one considers the many unsuccessful attempts to smelt it pyritically, as well as the high percentage of coke normally used at all the plants in the district.

"IntroductionIn 1980, Fording Coal Limited started conceptual planning studies which led to major changes in the long-range mining plan at their Fording River Operations. These new plans have been completed and are now in operation.To assist personnel in a timely completion of this major revision to the long-range plan, existing in-house drill hole data base and scheduling systems were used and a computerized Mine Modelling and Planning System was purchased. With these tools, plan s were developed which led to completion of initial access to the peak of Eagle Mountain and the start of mining operations in March 1983. As mining area s open up and new geo logical data is obtained, detailed plan s are being extended and revised.With the geology and mine plan s on line, this work can now be done with less effort and plans ca n be adapted to provide flexibility in mining operations. Changes in market conditions can be accommodated by moving mining operations into different seams for different coal types. The computer systems are used to revise pit designs and schedules accordingly."

This paper considers mineral processing in zero gravity dry environments typical of asteroids or comets. The electro-dynamic separation technique using pneumatic flow systems is explored. Pneumatic delivery of solids is used because of extreme temperature changes and the possible scarcity of water. The present earth-based process and how it can be modified for these conditions is examined.

This paper presents a systematic approach on gold recovery from electronic waste (e-waste) using ammonium persulfate. This process was developed as a response to the lack of hydrometallurgical systems capable of separating gold from its metallic substrate without material grinding, with minimum formation of pollutants, and achieving a lower reaction time. Computer memory boards, electronic processors and electronic pins and contacts were analyzed to determinate base metals (Ni, Fe, Cu) and gold (Au) using microwave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES). An aqueous commercial grade ammonium persulfate with oxygen and pressure was used to produce the persulfate anion (S2O82-) and the oxidative sulfate ion (SO42-), which partially oxidized and leached the base metals breaking the Au-Ni-Fe-Cu bonds and allowing gold to be recovered in its original non-leaching state. The influence of the oxidative parameters was evaluated using full factorial (FF) and central composite designs (CCD) with response surface methodology (RSM) and first and second order models were developed. Using RSM allowed to obtain a faster recovery of gold, minimizing the agent consumption. The findings presented suggest that optimized quantities of ammonium persulfate, oxygen, pressure, temperature and liquid solid ratio could be used for selective oxidization of the base metals and to extract more than 96% of gold from e-waste.
