The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), where the southeast and northeast trade winds converge, is the effective climatological barrier that separates the southern and northern hemispheres in terms of dust budget. Asian and N. American dusts dominate in the Pacific north of the ITCZ, while Central and S. American dust prevails south of the ITCZ. In order to understand the nature of latitudinal and depth-related variations of mineral composition in terms of position relative to the ITCZ, deep-sea core sediments were collected from 9°N to 17°N at a 2° intervals along the 131.5°W meridian and analyzed for mineral composition. The amount of illite in surface sediments decreases gradually from 65% at 17°N to 31% at 9°N. In contrast, smectite increases from 11% to 56% southward. The observed mineralogical variation toward the ITCZ is attributed to the increased supply of volcaniclastic material transported via the southeast trade winds from the Central and South America source regions. Smectite-illite transition, a phenomenon that the amount of smectite increases over illite, occurs at around 10°N, the northern margin of the ITCZ. This result indicates that the change in latitudinal position of the ITCZ in the geological past could be recorded by the smectite-illite transition in deep-sea cores. The cores studied show down-core variation of mineral composition from illite-rich at the surface to a smectite-rich clay suit at depths, similar to the latitudinal variation. The smectite-illite transitions observed in these cores are likely the records of changes in latitudinal position of the ITCZ. The depth and age of the smectite-illite transition is getting shallower and younger towards the equator, implying that the ITCZ was located farther north during late Tertiary and has shifted southward to the present position of 5°N~10°N.

A thorough appreciation of the origin, formation, preservation and geometry of marine sand and gravel deposits is central in demonstrating that their extraction by dredging does not affect coastal processes or marine life. Geological evaluation underpins wave, tidal and sediment transport modeling and assists in predicting the nature and extent of seabed change during and after dredging. Marine sand and gravel deposits in the English Channel, southern North Sea and parts of the Irish Sea are of predominantly periglacial fluvial origin and record long histories of valley and floodplain cut and fill associated with Quaternary climatic and sea level oscillations. In the Bristol Channel, the influence of marine transgression and tidal dominance in sorting proglacial outwash deposits is evident in the distribution of sandbanks, scoured channels and gravel lags of this region. These deposits are relict and are unrelated to coastal sediment dynamics. Their extraction leaves seabed depressions which monitoring shows remain unfilled. The resultant offshore bathymetric changes and sediment removal in over 10 m water depth are not transmitted to the coastal zone as beach drawdown, wave height increases or sediment starvation. Applications for new aggregate dredging permissions in UK waters must be accompanied by an EIA and need to make a convincing case that the dredging will not affect rare or declining species and communities of marine life. Seabed recovery rates post dredging are now investigated and understood with reference to geological setting and the uniqueness of the sediment/biological character (biotope). Investigation of the continental shelf by the Industry and others reveals the large extent of gravel-dominated biotopes relative to commercially viable deposits.

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. For instance, we encounter the following variations, and combinations, off the Namibian Coast. ? Close inshore - holocene sand cover often masks large areas of potentially diamondiferous gravels. ? The needs of the on-going basic maintenance operations and proposed enhancement and hurricane protection projects in the City of Virginia Beach exceed the capability land-slide sources of sand. Through the past several years our studies have concentrated on locating and defining suitable quantities of sand appropriate for use on the area's beaches and assessing some of the consequences of dredging in shallow offshore areas. By providing information concerning the geological setting of sand resources, the local wave climate, and benthic infauna, the overall research project has strengthened the knowledge and understanding of several facets of Virginia's inner continental shelf. We have identified three distinct settings for deposits of beach-quality sand, two of which (filled channels and surficial shoals) are distinguishable in relatively unprocessed sub-bottom profiles and cores. The third, a sand facies within a larger stratum, is discernable only with a suite of cores. Sandbridge Shoal, about 5 km offshore of the resort and residential community of Sandbridge appears to contain a substantial quantity of sand that could be exploited with comparatively few problems. It already is designated as the source of material for use in a shoreline protection protect for a federal facility. Fluvial(?) fill of a late Pleistocene channel lust offshore of the main, commercial, resort area may offer a proximal alternative to existing and proposed resources. Ongoing work to describe the local wave climate and the possible impacts of anthropogenic alterations of the bottom topography on wave transformation and studies of the biological community as it might be affected by dredging will help fill-out our series of studies. Prior to utilization of the resource additional work is needed to provide better definition of the limits and magnitude of the sand bodies. Finally decisions concerning the use of specific resources will have to include physical, biological, economic, technical, and social considerations.

Since industry is progressing into the deep sea, marine scientists have expressed their concern about environmental disturbances which will be introduced by using the deep seafloor for mining metalliferous resources or as a repository for wastes. Environmental studies have been conducted on national levels and in bilateral or multilateral cooperation in the development of manganese nodule mining, as this is generally achieved in marine research. These investigations were partly large-scale and experimental approaches aiming at the assessment of the impacts expected to occur in commercial mining. The results elaborated till today and expected to be acquired in the foreseeable future may remain limited. Reliable impact evaluation will result from monitoring a Pilot Mining Operation (PMO). The lecture will present the broad outlines of a possible program and a preliminary calculation of approximate costs for such a combined industrial test and environmental monitoring event. Although the extent of necessary efforts for the environmental risks evaluation can only be estimated rather vaguely, it will become evident that the required human, technical, logistical, and financial resources to be mobilized will exceed industrial capacities and go beyond national funds. Therefore, such assessment of environmental risks is calling for broad international cooperation. While industrial developments for mining the deep sea will be ruled by competition or probably by restricted joint ventures, environmental care ranges outside competition and falls within the interest of all parties involved. Environmental studies, unlike technologies for the same function, do not primarily need duplication. International cooperation in PMO monitoring would equally well support all mining companies or consortia, it would minimize the efforts for all engaged in this challenging venture of deep-sea mining and it would maximize the precautionary discussion on and the care for the deep-sea environment.

Geothermal Energy has a great potential for meeting the electrical and thermal energy requirements of many countries and territories lying along tectonically active zones within and surrounding the Pacific Basin. Energy requirements for many of these small, scattered volcanic island nations preclude development of conventional generating facilities large enough to incorporate any economies of scale. However, by attempting to discover and develop shallow, relatively low temperature, geothermal reservoirs associated with recent vulcanism on many of the volcanic islands, exploration expenditures and risks, and problems associated with the development of high temperature resources can be reduced. Exploration and development drilling for these resources can be accomplished with truck mounted rotary drilling rigs that are less costly and more suitable for operations within the island infrastructures than the conventional rigs normally used in the drilling of deep, high temperature geothermal resources. Experience over the past decade with small, modular, binary (Rankine) cycle generating units indicates that geothermal energy can provide a reliable source of baseload electricity in the amounts required and at a cost that is competitive with other alternative and conventional energy sources. Development of shall, moderate temperature, geothermal resources with small, modular binary cycle generating units can provide ideal additions to the energy sources of many of the Pacific volcanic island nations within the framework of their island economies.

"A deposit of phosphate nodules is on the Chatham Rise approximately 450 kilometres to the east of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. The deposit contains sufficient rock phosphate to supply New Zealand’s phosphate fertilizer needs for at least 20 years. It was first investigated commercially 50 years ago by Global Marine, followed by JBL Minerals in the early 1970’s. NZ and German government research and industry groups then took it up again, with major field programs in 1978 and in the early 1980s.Due to difficult global and local economic conditions the project ground to a halt in 2004.The project was resurrected in 2007 when Chatham Rock Phosphate applied for a prospecting licence. This was granted in 2010 and a successful subsequent mining permit approval followed in 2013. The initial application for the separately required environmental permit was declined in February 2015.A lot has changed then and the significance of this will be the subject of the presentation. Chatham Rock Phosphate is confident that an environmental permit will be successfully granted next time."

The paper describes recent advances in the technology for mapping of the seabed with acoustic instrumentation. These instruments are typically single beam echo sounders, multibeam echo sounders and high resolution sub bottom profiler. For the single beam echo sounders, new features for deep water mapping are described, as well as the possibility for combining investigation of shallow areas with side scan sonar and vertical echo sounding in the same instrument. Multibeam echo sounding technology for deep and shallow water is reviewed, and some new high resolution instruments using dynamic beam focusing is presented. The sediment profiling technology deals with a novel design for high resolution sub bottom profiling, based upon a Mills Cross transducer with resolution as good as 3 degree in its largest configuration and a frequency range of 2,5 ? 7 kHz. Remarkable features of the system are a very high ping rate even for deep water, and the capability to map buried objects or structures by several simultaneous beams. Some results obtained with the first installation on the French research vessel ?Beatemps Beaupré? are presented.

In the diaphragm wall market, we have experiences both in manufacturing and executing projects all over the world since 1984. We have a population of more than 300 units working all over the world in all climate and soil conditions. Especially for hard soil and rock conditions, we have developed several cutting tools and systems to optimize the performance, e. g. the “flipper tooth” Besides the execution of land based foundation projects, we have performed our firs offshore project with the trench cutter in 1994. Our task was to take samples out of the alluvial soil off the coast of Namibia in a water depth of max. 200 m. We converted a drill vessel and launched the cutter thru the moon pool. The samples had a cross section of 3,40 m² and a max. depth of 5 m. They were used to estimate the content of diamonds. The first time, we reached the seabed of the deep sea was together with our seafloor exploration rig MeBo, where we can take cores up to a length of 160 m in a maximum water depth of 4000 m. With our customer MARUM, we have done several expeditions since 2005. The last expedition took place in the Black Sea to explore gas hydrates.

Iron and manganese are very mobile metallic elements in the surface aqueous environment, particularly in the oceans. The elements are easily precipitated as oxides or dissolved back into water, controlled mainly by redox conditions, and the oxide precipitates often selectively accumulate other metallic elements. We have found clear evidence of fine-scale variations in chemistry, mineralogy, isotope composition and microstructures within various iron-manganese nodules and crusts, such as in the deep-sea basins and seamounts of the Pacific Ocean, and in shallow waters in the Baltic Sea. The patterns of variation with depth (that is time-lapse profiles of the deposits) are often correlated among samples and sometimes between remote localities. These fine-scale variations most probably reflect past depositional conditions and possibly image the environmental change, although they remain to be correlated to any physicochemical, geological, or oceanographic parameters. The hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts have grown widely in the northwestern Pacific, accelerated by intensive circulation of oxygenated bottom waters during the last several millions of years, or earlier. The fine-scale (in millimeter) in-depth compositional and textural patterns with Be-10 growth-rate curves suggest significant changes in growth rate and also occasionally show a common microstratigraphic pattern among samples. Some of the samples indicate a correlation in growth pattern between remote locations, while others suggest short-range difference of oceanographic conditions with water depths.

Six active Kermadec Arc submarine volcanoes located between 34°S and 36°30?S were mapped and sampled by an interdisciplinary inter-institutional research team between April and July 2005 using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mother ship the RV Kai?mikai-O-Kanaloa. The purpose of the expedition was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, plume production and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial poly-metallic sulphide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of 1700 meters within the base of the northern wall of the summit caldera of Brothers Volcano has produced a field of chimneys, some of them 5 metres high with black smokers venting. Temperatures of 300°C were measured within the active vents. Clark Volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 metres. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with 5-meter high venting chimneys and smaller structures around the periphery. Water temperatures of 200°C. Geochemical and petrological analysis of the massive poly-metallic sulphide samples taken from Brothers and Clark show a diversity of mineralogy. This diversity is clearly a function of hydrothermal water temperature. Chimneys sampled from Brothers are pyrite and sphalerite dominant with lesser chalcopyrite. Sulphides from Clark Volcano tend to be barite rich with lesser sphalerite and pyrite. Sulphides from Brothers Volcano have a range in gold composition of 4 to 58 ppb with silver composition of up to 38 ppb. A mineral formation model for the volcanoes suggests hydrothermal fluid boiling within the volcanic edifice for those volcanoes with shallow summits and massive sulphide deposition with the edifice as well. Surficial deposits include native sulphur and lower temperature oxides. Only the deeper water Brothers Volcano shows massive sulphide deposition along the marginal faults of the caldera floor.

Deep-sea mining is rapidly approaching the test-mining phase to prepare for commercial mining in multiple oceans, both in areas within and beyond national jurisdiction. The first test-mining operations are likely to focus on seafloor massive sulfides found at active and inactive hydrothermal vents within national jurisdictions – possibly in the coming months. Beyond national jurisdictions, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is developing the regulations to oversee exploitation of polymetallic nodules, massive sulfides and cobalt crusts. The Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI) minerals working group has, over the last 3 years, made formal submissions on the regulatory framework, on the draft exploitation regulations, on the article 154 review of ISA and on the initial environmental regulations. In advance of both test and commercial mining, we urgently need to identify and develop comprehensive, ecosystem-based management practices for deep-ocean environments subject to mineral extraction. Transparent criteria for deep-sea institutional and corporate social responsibility also need to be established. Proactive development of management practices, frameworks and policy prior to the onset of mining will facilitate some degree of protection and preservation of the marine environment, whilst enabling the use of seabed mineral resources. The DOSI minerals working group constitutes a broad spectrum of scientific, industry, legal and policy expertise. We provide expert opinion, both in collated and individual response forms, on deep-sea mining related concerns to ISA and national bodies. Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice ? like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water can combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in the ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the sea. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical high pressure ? low temperature combination (0-17 bars, 0-25ºC), which in turn dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion or slumping of sediments, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flows or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. It is becoming increasingly evident that naturally occurring gas hydrates are significant component of the shallow geosphere and are of societal concern in at least three major ways: as an energy resource, a geologic hazard and a major contributor for climatic changes.

The present three-year long phase of the SOPAC/Japan Deep Sea Co-operative Mineral Resources Programme [Programme], commenced in 2000. The Programme has been funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ), since 1985. Field survey activities and associated data analysis and interpretation, for the Programme, has largely been carried out by the Deep Ocean Resources Development Co., Ltd. (DORD). The Government of Japan has, since 1982, recognised DORD as one of its ? Pioneer Investigators? for manganese nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone . Although the objective of this paper is to present the results of the drilling cruise that was conducted from December 2001 to January 2002, within the North Fiji Basin, in Fiji?s EEZ, it will also seek to provide a broad overview of the results of the cruise conducted within the Cook Islands in May to June 2000, as well as present preliminary results of the cruise conducted in the Marshall Islands in June to July 2002.

With the pending U.S. ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the subject was raised as to the Convention's potential impact on U.S. ocean science. The Ocean Studies Board (National Academy of Sciences) elected to convene a two-day workshop in October 1995 to consider the potential impacts and to determine whether or not they warranted a more formal and intensive study. A review of the workshop discussions and deliberations concerning the matter of UNCLOS and U.S. ocean science will be presented.

According to geochemical specialization, cobalt-manganese crusts (CMC) of the Magellan Seamounts are rich in cobalt and manganese and are complex in composition. Besides cobalt, manganese, and nickel, they contain such components, as platinum, copper, molybdenum, and rare earth elements, which enhance the value of this material. Factors and conditions responsible for Co-Mn ore-genesis and processes of cobalt-manganese crust formation are described in a number of Russian and foreign geological papers. The study of ore-concentrating processes in the Magellan Seamounts helped to solve an important applied problem, namely to reduce the time needed to reveal the factors of CMC formation mechanism. The authors of this research found seawater over the described area of Magellan Seamounts to be stratified and to contain high concentrations of manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and zinc. Diagrams of suspended Co, Mn, Ni, and other components in seawater (0-5500 m), as well as medium concentrations of basic elements (Co, Mn, and Ni) in ore deposits of metallogenic levels of Magellan Seamounts, were found to coincide both on guyots and abyssal plains. Detailed geological study of guyots in the Magellan Seamounts (Dalmorgeo, IOAN, Roskomnedra, and others) revealed that medium Co-Mn crusts cover bedrock rocks in narrow ribbon-like bodies along the edges of bathymetric intervals 1300-1600 m, 1400-2000 m, 2000-2500 m, and 2500-3000 m.
