In this study, selective flocculating of diaspore using anion macromolecular reagent as flocculant was tested to separate diaspore from alum-silicate minerals. Firstly, the effect of pH on settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite dispersions has been investigated. The results show that the maximum settling speed of diaspore and kaolinite appeared re-spectively at pH7 and pH3.33 which is close to the point of zero charge (PZC) of diaspore (6.8) and kaolinite(3.5). This result is in well agreement with the double electric layer theory. Secondly, the settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite particles in different anion flocculant solution have been researched. The results indicate that flocculant solution concentration significantly affect the selectivity and the flocculating performance of anion molecular. In high concentration solution, both diaspore and kaolinite have faster settling rate compared to blank solution. How-ever, in low concentration solution, the anion macromolecular can enhance the settling rate of diaspore remarkably but has no apparent effect on the settling rate of kaolinite. This result suggests that the tested anion flocculant is a promising reagent for de-silica of diasporic bauxite. Lastly, FTIR method was employed to probe the adsorption mechanism of flocculant on diaspore and kaolinite. The results reveal that there are anion flocculant characteristic bands on the spectra of diaspore but no obvious characteristic bands of flocculant on the FTIR spectrum of kaolinite. This result is in good correspondence with settling test.

The slag produced in metallurgical smelting processes contains considerable amount of valuable metals. The present work focuses on recovery of copper value by froth flotation from the copper smelter slag. The slag samples are subjected to detailed characterization including automated quantitative mineralogy using Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). The MLA results indicate that a part of copper is present in sulphide form in fayalite (iron-silicate) matrix and very poorly liberated. SEM-EDX analyses also reveal that a certain part of the copper is present within the fayalite (Fe-Ca-Si) matrix, perhaps either as lattice impurity or very fine grain. The copper smelter slag is ground in wet mode in a ball mill, to particle size distribution suitable for flotation. Subsequently, the slurry undergoes froth-flotation in lab-scale Denver-type flotation cell. Various combinations of sodium iso-propyl xanthate (SIPX) and alkyl hydroxamate collectors are used along with pine oil as frother. A multiple collector dosage is required for effective flotation of non-sulphide copper phases associated fayalite and alkyl hydroxamate is identified as one of the effective collector for non-sulphide minerals. The copper recovery can be enhanced by 7-10% with a combination of collectors as compared to conventional sulphide flotation using only xanthate type collectors. This paper describes a new magnetic separator integrating dynamic permanent magnetic force, gravity and flow dynamics to enhance the quality of the iron concentration. This equipment can increase the grade of concentrate by controlling the formation of magnetic agglomerations to reject most gangue. Test results indicates that the compound force field separator can be applied in improving the quality of iron concentrate and has a wide range of potential market applications. The productivity index of the Coopracarcegua Ltda., a mid-size coal mining company of Norte de Santander, Colombia, was related absenteeism using accident, productivity and profit data four years. The analysis was based on type, severity and frequency of accidents, number of absentee days; price per metric ton, and other relevant parameters. The enterprise is formed by 5 different mines of thermic coal, each one with different exploitation technologies and different productivity. Each mine was analysed separately and the loss of profit due to absenteeism was calculate for each one. The study showed that the foregone earnings due to absenteeism in terms of the whole productivity of the enterprise was about of 6.6% of the total profit average the 4 years, with calculated values of 14.7%, 3.5%, 8.4% and 4% per year in the evaluated period. The study identified that the most important cause of absenteeism was "General Disease". The foregone earnings in 2009, the highest loss for the analysed period, was about US$ 0.937 million and during the whole evaluated period was US$ 2.46 million.

Vanadium-titanium magnetite from Panzhihua was crushed with open and closed circuit process by high pressure grinding roller (HPGR). The particle size characteristics of the crushed product were analyzed and the micro-cracks generated by HPGR during the crushing process were studied. The results showed that, in crushed products, the reduction ratio increases and the size distribution becomes more uniform with increasing of the pressure on roller?s surfaces. The fine fraction content of crushing products from -3.2 mm classification closed-circuit by HPGR increases obviously compared with that by Jaw Crusher and particle size distribution is more uniform. Large amount of intra-crystalline cracks and cleavage cracks are generated in vanadium-titanium magnetite crushed by HPGR, which makes the specific surface area larger and Bond grinding work index (objective particle size is 0.074 mm) decreased by 14.05% than that by Jaw Crusher. And the liberation degree of monomer of the product crushed by HPGR increased compared with that by Jaw Crusher with the similar fineness of grinding. The estimated requirement of the nation by the year 2020 is approx. 80 Mt of steel and more than 0.2 million MW installed capacity of the electricity, thereby increasing the consumption of the coking and non-coking coal, which is expected to be in tune of about 75 Mt & 500 Mt respectively. One of the major deleterious factors in achieving the goal is the deteriorating quality of the feed coal used in both steel and power industries. Indian coking coals, in general, are typified by high ash, high inert (both organic and inorganic), low rank, low reactive macerals content, heterogeneous petrographic make-up, inferior coking properties and poor amenability to washing, thereby necessitating suitable washing measure. Coke-based steel industries in India require washed coking coal containing ash % varying between 17-19. The situation demands taking on immediate challenges to fill up the gap between the requirements and supply of coking coal. This paper reviews the R&D attempts in this laboratory and throws light on the key measures as long-term solution to the problem. Search for alternative source of coking coal, like LVC coal and their judicious preparation technology. The low volatile coking coal (LVCC) constitutes about 50% of the total coking coal reserves in India. These coals are characterized by high raw coal ash content (37 to 40%) and very difficult washability potential. If these coals are treated in the existing washeries, which are generally 2 or 3-product systems, the cost of clean coal is high as the byproduct sale value is low. It has been proposed to produce a new type of by product, which enjoys high demand and good coking properties.

The state discharge standard for arsenic-containing wastewater which is the first kind of pollution is less than 0.5 mg/L. In fact, in a certain company, the acidic arsenic-containing wastewater in non-ferrous smelting was as high as 860 mg/L, which is far beyond the state discharge standard. Obviously, the direct release of this wastewater without further treatment would result in great hazards to the ecological environment. To aim directly at the characteristics of acidic arsenic-containing wastewater, in this study, two steps of treatment including oxidation-flocculation and removal fluoride by mixing alkaline neutralization were suggested. Through analyzing various influencing factors in treatment effects, the optimum technical conditions were obtained. The sediments after treating were recyclable and the secondary pollutions can be avoided. Moreover, the results also show that, all indexes of the effluent after treating are lower than the First Grade Standard of Integrated Wastewater Discharge (GB 8978-1996). This novel method has advantages of short flow sheet, easy operation and low cost.

With the increasing applications of the Chinese metal magnetic liners, the requirement for their technical specifications has become stricter and stricter. It is necessary to deeply analyse the metal magnetic liners in order to improve their reliability and economics. The key issue of metal magnetic liners is magnetic forces: their attractions to mill shell and protection layer. Mathematical models were developed using finite-element analysis software and systematic simulation analyses of the two most critical indexes of magnetic liners were performed to find out the most important parameters and their effect on the liner?s characteristics. The relationships between magnetic forces and installation gaps, thickness of permanent magnets and thickness of protection layer may be used to guide the design of metal magnetic liners for ball mills in order to achieve good economic indexes.

The feed to Chadurmalu iron ore concentrator plant is a mixture of magnetite and haematite iron ore with a Fe/FeO ratio of about 8. The feed to plant, after grinding via wet SAG mill, is pre-separated by wet low intensity magnetic separator. Magnetic product is conducted to magnetite processing circuit for producing magnetite concentrate, and nonmagnetic product is directed to haematite processing circuit. Due to surface oxidization of magnetite particles and a decrease in magnetic attraction properties, significant amount of these particles are misled to tailing which results in decreasing the efficiency of haematite processing circuit. This problem can be remedied by using magnetic drum separator with more magnetic intensity and/or gradient. In this paper, the replacement of LIMS separators with wet medium intensity magnetic separators with a field intensity of 3800 gauss on drum surface (MIMS) have been suggested and considered as the most suitable solution to prevent the loss of magnetite particles. The results of carried out investigations with replacement of drum separators in industrial scale, showed that utilizing MIMS in magnetite processing circuit resulted in increasing final concentrate weight recovery on average by 2.59%, without any adverse effect on the concentrate quality; decreasing the magnetite content in the feed to high gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) by about 3.5%; decreasing the feed to floatation part by about 7% and consequently decreasing consumption of chemical reagents; increasing Fe/FeO ratio of the feed to plant. "Microcrystalline silica impurities such as quartz and opal-CT commonly associated in bentonite should be controlled and removed as far as possible when bentonite is used as biocompatible raw material because they show sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity. Since opal-CT contained in bentonite in trace amounts cannot be well separated by conventional sedimentation method, in this work, the ultrasound-assisted removal of the impurity was attempted. Irradiating ultrasound into bentonite-water suspension promoted the production of fine montmorillonite particles in the suspension and the production markedly increased when montmorillonite was activated by Na2CO3. Subsequent centrifugation of the suspension made it possible to recover pure montmorillonite particles as an overflow product. Only 16.2 mass % of total solids was recovered as an overflow from the non-activated suspension, whereas 63.5 mass % was recovered from the activated suspension at centrifuging speed of 10000 rpm. Increasing sonicating time enhanced the yield of overflow, however, excessive sonication up to 10 min hindered the purification of montmorillonite. It was observed that the peak reflection of (101) plane of opal-CT in overflow increased as sonicating time increased during prolonged sonication. INTRODUCTION Bentonite consisting predominantly of mineral montmorillonite is clay-rich soft rock generated frequently from the alteration of volcanic ash. Depending on the nature of its genesis, bentonite contains a variety of accessory minerals, which may include mainly quartz, feldspar, opal cristobalite/tridymite (opal-CT), calcite, illite and mica. The presence of these accessory minerals can impact the industrial value of the deposit, reducing its commercial value depending on its applications. Therefore, bentonite is often purified by removing these impurity minerals for special applications where specific properties and characteristics are required (Murray, 1999). Among the special applications, bentonite is often used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry as both excipient and active ingredient in the forms of liquid (suspensions, emulsions), semi-solid (creams, ointments) and solid (powder, capsules and tablets). The basic requirements for bentonite to be used as raw material are pure, microbiological and mineralogical inertness. Physical properties such as swelling volume and gel formation are also important. Particularly, microcrystalline silica polymorphs such as quartz, cristobalite and opal-CT should be controlled and removed as far as possible because they show sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in humans."

"Tatasteel’s West Bokaro washery#3 is designed to deslime raw coal at 0.5mm; the oversize (+0.5mm) is beneficiated in dense media cyclones (DMC) while the undersize (-0.5mm) is beneficiated in froth flotation (FF) cells. Nearly, 80% of the raw coal feed reports to the DMC circuit consisting of four parallel streams. Presently, the performance of DMCs at washery#3 is interpreted by: (a) comparing the actual plant yield w.r.t the lab predicted yield and (b) misplacement of clean coal to middllings.However, the comparison between actual & lab predicted yield is fallacious given the fact that the lab predicts yield of the borehole sample while the feed received at the plant has different characteristics altogether due to the dilution during mining. To mitigate the said limitations, a quick diagnosis tool using the past data has been developed that will give a prediction of performance of different coal seams in the DMCs, inputs being feed ash to DMCs and stream wise feed specific gravity (coal & magnetite combined).The tool also will help in identifying the root cause on real time basis thereby helping the operator to take necessary corrective actions. The operator can intimate the mining personnel in cases of shale reporting to the feed as a result of dilution during mining. In events of higher standard deviations between the parallel streams w.r.t feed specific gravity, the operator can adjust the parameters accordingly to minimize the yield loss. INTRODUCTION West Bokaro came into existence in 1948, as an independent coal company, managed by M/S Anderson Wright. Tata Steel acquired the Company in 1956 to meet its requirement of metallurgical grade coal for Iron making. Subsequently, in 1976, it was made a division of Tata Steel. In 1974, when coal mines were nationalized, West Bokaro was exempted as it produced coal only for captive consumption of the Steel Works. The first washery of India was set up in West Bokaro. The business objective of the West Bokaro division is to produce clean coal at optimum cost for captive use in the steel plant of Tata Steel at Jamshedpur. The strategy is to reduce ash with minimum loss of yield so that quality of coal improves and yet the cost is beneficial vis-a vis imported coal. The primary product is the metallurgical grade coal for coke ovens, which converts coal into coke for use in the Blast Furnaces."

"In recent years, metal producing companies have increased their investment in automation and technological innovation, embracing new opportunities to enable transformational change. Internet of Things (IoT) is one of many transformational initiatives, which can fundamentally revolutionize how industrial complexes operate. Whatever the issue, the answer is in the abundant and growing quantity of real time data and events collected in the grinding and flotation circuits in a mineral processing plant. Based on earlier work, today a grade recovery model permits identifying the best operating conditions in real time. We will review the strategy for increasing the value of the abundance instrumentation in current plants. An optimal Gaudin size distribution model provides augmented information from traditional sensors to find the optimal grind cut to reduce metal losses in the flotation circuits. The large amount of sensors in a flotation circuits permits to estimate the recovery and to find the optimal froth depth and aeration using an air holdup flotation model. The paper will describe the strategy of classifying data for on line generation of insights to using operational intelligence tools. We will discuss the implementation Recovery/Grind strategy with industrial examples in non-ferrous mineral processing and iron beneficiation.INTRODUCTIONThe declining supplies of high grade ores and increasing consumption of mineral and metal products have demanded higher operational efficiencies with minimum capital investments. The objective of copper flotation objectives are based on maximizing the dollars return on the concentrate produced. The economic efficiency is maximized by manipulating the circuit along the grade/recovery curve relationship. To achieve such objective improved stabilization of the grinding and flotation circuits are required (Oosthuizen, Craig, and Jamsa-Jounela, 2017)."

India is the third largest producer with accounting to fifth largest reserves base of coal in the world. Indian coal has high ash content (15-45%) and low calorific value. The basic processes being used in India at different places for coal washing adopts old techniques. Much of the valuable part is being lost during washing processes. With enhancement of the available techniques and use of new processes like flotation process indicates better recovery of carbon values during washing stage. The same will increase the reserve base, improve economy of operation and alleviate environment related problems. In the above backdrop this paper portrays the case study of an existing coal processing plant in India. The case study includes the modifications being incorporated in the existing process to enhance the product value. The existing practices and the future trend of process technology that could be adopted to meet the requirements in this country are also discussed. Ultra-fine Stirred Mill is a kind of high energy efficient equipment for ultra-fine grinding, and has been the mainstream equipment in the submicron powder and slurry industry. This paper mainly describes flow-field numerical simulation of the three popular ultra-fine grinding mills: (respective-ly as) Disc Stirred Mill, Pin Stirred Mill and Spiral Stirred Mill, by means of the software Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). In the flow-field numerical simulation, the velocity gradient, shear rate dispersion of the flow-field, the viscosity dissipation rate were analyzed with CFD. It is discovered that Pin Stirred Mill has the highest velocity gradient in circular directions and the most homogeneous distribution of shear rate among the three. Flow-field numerical simulation provides a new way (and means to) for the parameter optimization design and project enlargement of Ultra-fine Stirred Mill. The experiments were also carried out, the results are consistent with the results of the simulation analysis. For example, in GCC grinding experiments under the same conditions, the specific energy consumption of Pin Stirred Mill with 3600L in volume is 15%~17% less, and its processing capability is 13%~15% better than Disc Stirred Mill. Now with its optimized structure and excellent performances, more than ten sets Pin Stirred Mill with 3600L in volume have been used in industrial production in Shandong, Guangdong and Hunan province.

In this research bioleaching or extraction of iron present in a kaolin from La Virgen mine, Anti-oquia/Colombia, was carried out. Organic acids produced in SF with Aspergillus niger were used in the process. The fermentation process was carried out in 3 L aerobic stirred bioreactors, at a temperature of 30 °C, a stirrerd speed of 700 rpm, an initial pH of 4 and a fermentation time variable between one to 8 days, obtaining broth fermentation samples daily per bioreactor. For iron extraction, fermented broth from second to sixth day of fermentation was evaluated and it was found that the fermentation broth of the third day showed a larger potential for iron removal, 786 ppm, by using kaolin with an initial iron content of 1401 ppm. A set of tests using commercial organics acids such as citric acid and oxalic were carried out because those were found in the fermentation broth and it was found that oxalic acid presented three times more iron removal than citric acid.

In a previous study by Van Dyk, et al., (2006) and Van Dyk et al. (2006), a FactSage model was developed to understand the chemistry and interpret mineral matter transformation during a fixed bed counter-current gasification process. It was concluded that the FactSage model developed, compared with HT-XRD experimental results and that the FactSage thermodynamic modeling sup-plies insight into specific mineral reactions and slag formation. The specific value for Sasol in using FactSage, in combination with HT-XRD is that it can be used to analyze equilibrium conditions for reactions occurring between inorganic and organic materials together, as well as to provide insight into mineral transformation and slag formation. The purpose of the present study was to improve the current FactSage modeling approach, by combining specific zones in the gasification process. This can improve and speed-up the interpretation of mineral matter transformations and flow properties of reacted mineral matter in coal and assist in identifying and quantifying slag formation in the gasifier operation at temperatures not reflected by normal AFT analyses. The updated and improved FactSage model compared favorably with the original model as well as with HT-XRD results and thus will be able to supply results in a faster and more convenient manner. In the new FactSage model, supported by HT-XRD experimental findings, it is indicated that feldspar formation (including anorthite) correlated with slag formation at temperatures around 1000°C and no slag formation in the base case coal was observed in the drying and devolitilization zone, as was to be expected. Feldspar is one is the mineral species which has the lowest AFT causing the most slag-liquid formation and forms probably as a product between the SiO2, Al2O3 and Ca-containing species. In the gasification zone it was clear that slag-liquid formed at a temperature of 1000°C, with a decrease in the feldspar content. Mullite formation was also observed in the base case sample in the temperature range 1000°C and 1100°C. The decrease in the amount of SiO2 at 1100°C is related to the formation of mullite, but also that the slag-liquid phase also contains an amount of SiO2 in the molten form.

Under the AMIRA P9 project the three-product cyclone-an off-shoot of the conventional hydro-cyclone-that produces three distinct products has been developed. The three-product cyclone shows great promise as a classifier in mineral processing. Industrial and pilot plant trials performed to assess its performance in the classification of the UG2 platinum ore, indicate that the presence of an extra overflow product stream that captures the mid-sized particles, provides improved classification efficiency. To assess the split on component density, samples from the feed and product streams were screened and assays by size for chromite (? = 4.8) and silica (? = 2.65) were obtained. Results from tests performed using this type of hydrocyclone in a number of applications indicates that it can be applied successfully in circuit configurations where the conventional hydrocyc-lone is not suitable. Utilising the three-product cyclone to classify the UG2 platinum ore resulted in an intermediate overflow product stream containing the mid-sized low density silicates and relatively fine high density chromite particles while the finer overflow contained mostly fine silicates and chromite particles. The coarse chromite and silicates reported to the underflow. Due to the increased number of products, the method of using efficiency curves was extended to cater for the increased number of products in the three-product cyclone. Although significant differences in the classification performance of the three-product cyclone were noticed with variations in machine variables a consistent method of assessing the performance was applied. The efficiency curve was adopted and applied and separate efficiency curve properties were obtained for each product stream. The methodology was applied to the component data, and efficiency curve proper-ties for each key component were obtained and compared. This paper discusses the application of the efficiency curve to cyclones producing more than two products and extending the methodology to the different components in the feed.

In mineral processing, the settling of mineral particles in water, the flow of ore pulp, the dewatering and filtering of concentrates and so on, are related to the pulp viscosity. While the interaction between mineral particle surface and water affects directly the pulp viscosity. Therefore, it is of great value to the development of mineral processing theory to research the effect of mineral particle surface on the water viscosity in boundary layer. In micro-fluid, the effect of mineral particle surface on the water molecules in boundary layer can not be ignored. The water viscosity in boundary layer and the effect of the nature of mineral particle solid surface on the viscosity are analysed based on the deduction of attraction potential energy formula of mineral particle surface to the water molecules in boundary layer. The results show that the attraction potential energy of mineral particle surface to the water molecules in boundary layer is determined by the properties of solid molecules and fluid molecules and varies inversely as the third power of the distance from mineral particle surface. The water viscosity in boundary layer consists of the viscosity of free water and the additional viscosity resulting from the attraction of mineral particle surface. The increment of the viscosity caused by the attraction of mineral surface is µs. This additional viscosity is also inverse ratio to the third power of the distance from mineral particle surface. The greater the dipole moment, the polarizability and the ionization energy of mineral particle solid surface molecules are, the higher the attraction potential energy of mineral particle surface to the water molecules and the water viscosity in boundary layer are. The thicker stationary water boundary layer is d0. The higher the µs is, in other words, the greater the attraction of solid surface to water molecules is, the thicker the stationary water boundary layer becomes when free water viscosity is constant.

Red mud is the major waste material produced during digestion of bauxite ores with caustic soda in alumina production following the Bayer?s process. Its disposal remains a worldwide issue in terms of environmental concerns. A lot of research and developmental activities are going on throughout the world to find effective utilization of red mud, which involves various product developments. At present, building materials, industries are fast growing industrial sector where the need of various raw materials is enormous. The use of red mud in building material production is one of the options for conservation of natural resources and reduction of environmental pollution. A cost-effective and energy efficient mineral cementation process has been developed at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar for use of red mud in manufacture of building brick, block and aggregate. The red mud is an alkaline material, which contains both leachable and non-leachable soda along with different mineral constituents of alumina, iron and silica. The effort has been made to use the mineral constituents of red mud to develop cold setting building brick by mineral cementation process using a binder specially prepared from Portland Slag Cement, Lime, Gypsum and Alkali metal sulfates. The red mud has been used from 40 to 70% by weight along with fly ash and binder in development of cold setting building brick conforming to the specification of IS:12894:2002.

Today, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design. In this work, a model of a rougher flotation circuit, based on operating variables and parameters fitted from industrial data, obtained in some previous work, is used to develop a set of logic rules in order to aid operating decisions. The simulator was first used to sensitize the effect of changing the froth depth profile on target variables, and then to find out the best profile to reject common disturbances coming into the plant. The flotation circuit simulator was redesigned to incorporate an expert system following the proposed control algorithm. Several tests were performed to evaluate the control responses to different correlated series of input variables, such as feed grade, tonnage, particle size distribution, and solid percentage.
