"Cyanide tailings of gold and silver concentrates contain considerable quantities of copper-lead-zinc sulfide minerals that can be recovered. However, the strong inhibition effect of cyanide often makes it difficult to recover these sulfide minerals effectively. In this research, a sample of cyanide tailings was investigated based on the principles of process mineralogy; activating flotation tests were carried out for the target minerals in the tailings, and the activation mechanism of the activator and its influence on the target minerals were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Mixed flotation of copper and zinc was carried out using QJ-01, a combined agent containing sulfite, as the activator of copper and zinc minerals, and ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate (ADD) and butyl xanthate (BX) as the combined collector. Copper concentrate was obtained from the mixed concentrate by using a combined inhibitor of sodium sulfide and zinc sulfate to inhibit the zinc mineral. Zinc concentrate was extracted from the copper tailings by using copper sulfate as the activator and BX as the collector. The flotation test yielded copper concentrate with a grade of 22.56% and recovery of 76.96%, and zinc concentrate with a grade of 42.56% and recovery of 82.29%, which shows that comprehensive recovery of the sulfide minerals – copper and zinc –from the cyanide tailings was realized. The FTIR analysis showed that CN- was chemisorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite and sphalerite following cyanide treatment, while the combined activator QJ-01 containing sulfite reduced CN- into SCN- and weakened the complexing ability of CN- with metal ions on the mineral surface, thus achieving a good activation effect on chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The results of this study can provide practical guidance in increasing the resource utilization ratio of cyanide tailings in gold mines, and thus contribute to alleviating environmental problems caused by stockpiling cyanide tailings. INTRODUCTION Cyanidation, the most widely used technology for extraction of gold, has several advantages such as high recovery, process maturity, low cost, etc. According to available data, the annual discharge of cyanide tailings from China's gold mines exceeds 20 million tons (Li et al., 2011). Lower grades of exploitable gold ore entail increased discharge of cyanide tailings. Huge quantities of cyanide tailings are regarded as waste and stored, resulting in significant wastage of land resources. Moreover, residual beneficiation reagents, cyanide ions, and heavy metal ions in cyanide tailings cause severe pollution of water and land (Laitos et al., 2013; Donato et al., 2007; Mudder and Botz, 2004). In addition, cyanide tailings often contain valuable elements such as gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, sulfur, and iron, which, if not recycled, would result in considerable wastage of resources. Hence, it is imperative to study the reduction and safety of cyanide tailings, and the mineral resources present in them."

The interaction and galena flotation with xanthenes and dexanthogen regularities have been de-fined. So, using thermodynamic method of analysis, the thermodynamic stability of [galena - xanthenes - water] system and the behavior of lead xanthenes surface state in solution were devised. Thus, results of cared out calculations and experimental investigation completely coincide with-out depending on witch product of sulfur oxidation is formed in the solution. In additional, was obtained quantitative physico-chemical models for the necessary xanthenes concentration of lead sul-fide complete flotation in the tuning fork of: at ?? values from 7.0 up to 9.0 (or at the formation of lead carbonate PbCO3 ) and at ?? values from 9.0 up to 12 (or at the formation of lead hydro carbonate Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2 Physico-chemical models derived can be used as the criteria for functional units of automation systems to control and regulate the flotation process in mineral processing plants.

This paper mainly reported separation manganese silver oxidized ores process by amylum de-gradation reduction and its influencing factors. When dosage is given according to nMn : nH2SO4 : n(C6H10O5)n : nH2O=1:k21.8: k116.66:30, the amount of up to 95.93% Mn leach rate and less than 2% silver loss can be obtained. Cyanidation process was used to extracted silver from leaching Mn residues. Silver leach rate could reach 94.15% at consumed amount of 1kg/t NaCN for 1h. Silver leach recovery rate was more than 92.27% by leaching Mn and cyanidation two-step processes so manganese and silver were separated effectively.

Particle characteristics such as size, density, liberation and magnetic susceptibility play vital role in magnetic separation technique. To understand the performance of magnetic separation process for chromite beneficiation industry, particle characteristics need to be analysed. However, to date, this has been an expensive and time consuming task, thus only minimal amounts of this type of data are available in the literature. Several new methods are being developed, that will produce the required mineralogical and liberation data to provide processing information rapidly and inexpensively. Among these, QEMSCAN is a unique and advanced characterisation equipment used for liberation analysis for different ore whereas S.G. Franz Isodynamic Separator for determining the magnetic susceptibility. In Indian chromite deposits, the content of iron bearing minerals in the ore is typical which controls the Cr:Fe ratio in the product while treating in gravity based beneficiation plant. In the present investigation, detailed characterisation of two distinct chromite ore samples from Sukinda chromite deposit, India, was investigated which includes advanced mineral characterisation using QEMSCANand magnetic susceptibility measurement by using Frantz Isodynamic separator, etc.. Presence of haematite and gibbsite along with chromite mineral were identified as major gangue minerals in the high grade ore from XRD pattern whereas Goethite, Quartz, Haematite, Kaolinite, Ringwoodite identified in the low grade ore. The mass magnetic susceptibility of low grade ore is very high 5.2 cm3/g compared to 2.7 cm3/g for high grade ore, due to the presence of abundant quantity of iron bearing minerals. Subsequently, these two types of ore were subjected for magnetic separation for improving Cr:Fe ratio by using different magnetic separators viz. induced roll magnetic separator, wet high intensity magnetic separator, rare earth roll magnetic separator, rare earth drum magnetic separator. The results of magnetic separation studies indicated that, Cr: Fe ratio of the chromite ores can be improved to 3.99 and 1.97 from the feed assaying 3.09 and 1.29 respectively. Studies on rare earth roll magnetic separator indicated that both the ores were upgraded to a maximum Cr:Fe ratio level at optimised condition. Aluminum is produced by the Hall-Héroult process, which involves passing a current through a molten mixture of alumina dissolved in cryolite (Na3AlF6) to reduce the alumina to aluminum. This process occurs in an electrolytic cell comprising a steel shell lined with a carbon cathode and refractory bricks. After a certain period of operation, the carbon cathode deteriorates and is removed from the cell along with the refractory bricks. These removed materials are referred to as spent pot lining or ?SPL?. Typically, 30 Kg of SPL waste is generated for every ton of Aluminum produced. Globally aluminum smelters produce more than 500,000 tons of SPL each year. Even though SPL has a high fuel value (8000 to 9000 BTU/lb) and contains valuable metals, it is classified as a hazardous material due to its cyanide content and leachable fluorides. Various disposal/recycle techniques have been developed over the years for SPL but none of them is satisfactory. Thus, large quantities of SPL are still being dumped in landfills. In some countries, even the land filling of SPL is not permitted. The safe disposal of SPL thus remains a challenging problem to the aluminum industry and the search continues to find methods of converting SPL into a non-hazardous waste and/or recovering the valuable materials contained in the SPL. We have developed a process to produce hydraulic setting cements (eco-cement) containing a novel fluoride rich cementitious phase, from SPL by an energy efficient, low temperature clinkering route. A raw mix blend of SPL, lime/limestone, calcium sulfate and tailings sands based on a set of design criteria developed by us, is clinkered in a two stage process; 2 hours soak at 800 °C followed by clinkering at 1000 °C for another 2 hours, to produce a soft clinker. The SPL eco-cement is made by grinding the clinker to a fineness of 5000 cm2/g Blaine with 1% by weight borax as a set retarder. A good quality cement having as high as 20 % by weight of SPL in the raw mix (28 % by weight in the cement clinker) is thus produced. The physical properties of the SPL cements are found to be comparable to the Indian standard (IS) specifications for Ordinary Portland Cements (OPC). We have produced the cement in a few Kg batches and tested the reproducibility of results from batch to batch for further scale up. "Following the adopted strategy for making the production modern, efficient and environmental friendly the Company completed a stage of the integrated program aimed at reconfiguration of its processing capacity.Upgrade of the Talnakh Concentrator with commissioning of two start-up facilities (SF) allowed an increase of 30% in its ore processing capacity up to 10 mtpa. In addition to a new high-tech equipment installed, a new concentration process was adopted offering the main advantage of 25-30% reduction of sulfides in concentrate. New concentration technology enabled the total amount of produced nickel concentrates (from Norilsk and Talnakh Concentrators) to be processed at upgraded smelting facilities of Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant and allowed decommissioning of smelting capacities of Nickel Plant resulting in emissions reduction by 30%.Nornickel plans to boost the capacity of Talnakh Concentrator to 18 mtpa by 2022, after commissioning of the 3rd SF. This will provide a shorter route for ores transportation from Talnakh mines along with improvement of cost/performance ratio of ore processing through the usage of the modern equipment and optimized concentration flow scheme. Total capacity of Talnakh Concentrator will be sufficient to process ores from Talnakh deposits with planned upstream assets development taken into account. Volume of ore mined from Norilsk deposits to be processed at Norilsk Concentrator will be also increased.Upgrading the crushing section at Kola MMC Concentrator in 2015 provided finer particles of the crushed ore, resulting in 6.6% increase in specific capacity of ore mills as well as 1% higher recovery of non-ferrous metals due to improved liberation of ore minerals.In 2015-2017 the Company was actively engaged in optimization of existing process flow schemes and parameters of Kola MMC, new high-performance reagents were adopted for concentration process, namely, collectors, depressors, flocculants. These measures allowed the Concentrator to reduce its annual operating unit costs and ensure sustainable production of concentrate with the lower grade of the incoming feedstock.Launched in October 2017, Bystrinsky GOK’s Concentrator was 3D designed and received a range of advanced technological solutions.All design process procedures and technologies rolled-out at the Company’s concentrators were developed by Russian R&D institutes, with the key role of Gipronickel Institute, R&D Service of Kola MMC and Polar Division's in-house Engineering Support Centre."

Thermal treatment of mineral ores can initiate thermal phase transformations which can affect either their activation or deactivation, subsequently influencing their ability to dissolve in a leaching reagent. The formation of rutile and hematite from ilmenite minerals, for example, has been suggested to occur through a series of reduction and segregation reactions. This process has been used in beneficiating low-grade weathered ilmenite ores to higher grade rutile. Despite decades of re-search, the mechanism of this process is not well understood, because dissolved intermediates are poorly crystalline and are difficult to quantify, with the exception of the final rutile products. Previous studies have shown that disrupted intermediate phases, by thermal treatment, are most susceptible to reagent attack and can often demonstrate ?activation? effects. In this study, synchrotron based X-ray diffraction method was used to investigate in-situ and in real-time the transformation of ilmenite minerals to rutile and hematite during calcination. The rate of formation and disappearance of specific Bragg peaks during the reaction and thermal decomposition of the mineral were used to derive an understanding of the solid-state reactions. The effects of the mineral transformation were validated by laboratory based batch calcination and leaching in sulphuric acid. The results suggest that transformation of major mineral phases occurs within of specific window of operation and thermal treatment appears to influence the extent of activation and leachability of ilmenite minerals.

The objective of the paper is to develop a material balance calculation procedure for a production unit involving two plants separated by a pipeline. The case study is taken from the oil sands industry. The raw sands are first mixed with water in a conditioning plant, then transported through a pipeline to an oil extraction plant. The combination of pipeline dimensions and nominal throughput creates a significant variable time lag between the two plants. As usual, mass balance calculations required for the evaluation of plant performance indicators, such as bitumen recovery, are inaccurate due to measurement errors. In addition, in the present case study, the time lag of the pipe creates an additional source of uncertainty, which may lead to misinterpretations and wrong decisions. Raw data are usually reconciled through steady-state mass balancing, to correct for measurement errors. However, because of the significant pipeline dynamic lag, standard steady-state daily mass balance may fail at giving an appropriate picture of the operations. The proposed solution to the data reconciliation problem includes the use of a pipeline plug-flow model in the mass balance calculation. To fulfil the industrial constraint that current data reconciliation must not modify past reconciled values, while still satisfying dynamic constraints, a daily one-step method, i.e. a unitary filter-ing horizon, is recommended. The method is illustrated with simulation data, and the results com-pared to those of standard data reconciliation methods.

Single particle impact breakage experiments provide essential data to aid in understanding of rock fracture in comminution. Such experiments, conducted using devices such as the drop weight tester, split Hopkinson bars and more recently the rotary breakage tester, have been successfully used to characterize ore breakage properties in relation to measured fracture energies. The work presented in this paper highlights the techniques behind the calculation of impact breakage properties from each of these three devices. The breakage parameters that can be calculated from experimental data from each of these are to be described. Drop weight tests are used to calculate A and b hardness parameters using the standard JK breakage model. Split Hopkinson pressure bars are used to establish the ultimate compressive stress of particles through single impact breakage tests and the fraction of impact energy utilized to cause particle fracture. Low energy breakage tests using the rotary breakage tester are shown to be used in calculating particle breakage probability. Methods to calculate parameters related to particle breakage probabilities such as E0 and Ecrit are also discussed.

"Among the problems of the civilization development, a problem of interaction between man and natural environment can be highlighted. In the twentieth century the human transforming activity had got scales of geological processes and defined the contradiction between the goal to increase the quality of human life and possibilities of the natural environment. Last twenty-five years after the World Summit on the Environment (1992) indicate that the development of civilization is still based on receiving super profits from the natural resources exploitation. This statement is confirmed by economy globalization rates, growing contradictions between consumption and production, depletion and degradation natural environment. A new technological order is formed at the time of growing world population, technological capacities, organizational complexity, from one side, and global scales of geo-resources consumption, on the other side. Sciences, determining the further civilization development, should take on the task to change the social worldview, since the preservation of human population consists in remediating and maintenance of biosphere functions as a regulator of ecological balance. The new worldview in the geo-resources exploitation is based on the Ecological strategy of mining development, which consists in reducing mining-induced loading on natural environment while increasing efficient mineral production and processing, and providing for a comprehensive solution of tasks on mineral deposit development. One of strategic trend of mining development is to increase complexity and completeness of useful component extraction from ore and mining deposits while reducing wastes and decreasing their stockpiled volumes. The implementation of the ecological strategy has shown that the future is determined by reduction of the environmental impact while improving the efficiency of mineral mining and processing.INTRODUCTION The global nature of environmental problems caused by the scale of consumption of natural resources, huge amounts of waste, and intensive man-made impact on the environment requires a revision of the strategy for the natural resources development. Many existing technologies are ineffective in achieving the ultimate goal. Direct output in the raw materials - the end product technological chain rarely exceeds 10%, which implies a huge amount of work to move the soil. In addition, the feature of scientific and technological progress at the present stage is the growth of power-to-weight ratio."

"Self-similarity is proofed to be a common feature when brittle material is comminuted, either in particle bed or single particle mode. Appropriate test work is well documented for particle sizes less than 7 mm in several publications. In contrast, almost no research has been done for coarser particles. The aim of this paper is to show that the fracture pattern of coarser material also tends to be self-similar. Hence, single particles of quartzite, granodiorite and dolomite were comminuted under compressive load. The focus was set on three different size fractions -3.15 +2.5 mm, -31.5 +25 mm and lumps -300 mm. According to the wide range of particle sizes, three different piston-die presses were used with a maximum compressive force ranging from 5 kN to 4000 kN. The force-displacement curves were recorded in order to calculate the specific comminution energy. Additionally, the -31.5 +25 mm size fraction was crushed in a laboratory scale jaw crusher and a roll crusher. Some authors report that the energy-size-reduction relationship of self-similar materials can be approximated by a linear function, which is independent of the comminution equipment. In their charts the slope can be seen as a product-size-independent grindability measure. Our tests show a self-similar breakage behavior when particles in a range of -300 +3 mm are comminuted in single particle mode. Furthermore, the products of the piston-die-presses and the roll crusher are similar to each other in a self-similar representation of the particle size distribution. The jaw crusher product, however, is not self-similar compared to the piston-die-press products. Finally, the linear energy-size-reduction relationships are confirmed for each fraction, but show size dependent slopes."

This paper will underpin the future development of intellectuals having greater understanding of patent law and legislation, IP rights, and innovation. To understand this idea, I present a case study of China?s progress in the last 31 years in the rare earth research, innovation, and simultaneously patents area. Rare earth elements (REE) are at the centre of high technology and are the next wave of world innovation. Much of modern society depends on rare earth elements through their use in computers, lasers, telecommunications, iPods, medical technology, military applications, and so on (Long et al, 2010). The rare earth research, a large research body is being provided by Chinese sources. China devoted three or four university centers to the study of rare earths (Lifton, 2009). These measures are all designed to keep China at the forefront of REE production, materials, technology, and innovation. As a result in the last fifteen years there has been a shift from a US-dominated REE industry patents to Chinese patents. The world must identify strategic areas of rare earth innovation and provide funding to firms and universities that conduct such research. Not only research and innovation is vital but filing patents and preserving IP rights for research and innovation is even more important. We (rest of the world) need a comprehensive strategy to guide the development of patent and IP rights for research and innovation. Li-ion batteries are now used in electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Nanostructured Li(NiyMnzCo1-y-z)O2 is one of the more popular cathode chemistries for automotive Li-ion battery, due to its enhanced properties such as large surface area, short diffusion length, enhanced ionic and electronic conductivity, improved mechanical strength and structural integrity [Pan et al, 2013]. Recycling of Li-ion batteries helps to mitigate environmental effects of virgin metal extractions along with improper disposal of end of life batteries. To fulfill these objectives of the recycling, recovery of pure streams of the involved metals should be considered. In this study, the batteries were first discharged and dismantled in an inert atmosphere (Ar). The electrodes were then heat treated in a box furnace. This was done in order to break the chains of the adhesive (PVDF) and consequently separate the metallic substrates Cu and Al from the electrochemically active compound. This heat-treatment also helped to simplify the dissolution of the metal constituents in the electrochemically active compound from the cathode in the acid leaching process. Solvent extraction was chosen to achieve separation and recovery of metals with higher purity from these leachates. In the scope of the present work, a complete process from the point of dismantling to separation of constituent metals using solvent extraction was studied.

Process mineralogy focuses on the chemical components and mineral composition of ore, dissemination size of valuable minerals, the occurrence of valuable and detrimental elements as well as the behavior of each mineral in the process. Through determining process mineralogy parameters and analyzing the characteristics of minerals, the results of process mineralogy study can provide mineralogy data for making a reasonable mineral processing technology program and optimizing the process. A detailed process mineralogy study is carried out for a complex rare metal ore in this paper and the results show that niobium mainly exists in the form of ferrocolumbite as well as nioboaeschynite and zirconium primarily occurs as zircon. The valuable minerals including Th-nioboaeschynite, ferrocolumbite, zircon, etc. have the characteristics of fine dissemination size, wide size range, complex chemical composition and variable physical properties, which mean it is a refractory ore. According to the results of mineral composition of ore, chemical composition of minerals, dissemination size of minerals, magnetism ranges of minerals and the distribution of niobium and zirconium, the process of ?desliming-Nb-Zr bulk flotation? is designed for this ore and the niobium-zirconium bulk rough concentrate with the grade of Nb2O5 9.43%, ZrO2 24.95%, Ta2O5 0.36% and the recovery of Nb2O5 77.66%, ZrO2 76.70%, Ta2O5 75.13% to crude ore can be obtained in the whole process closed-circuit test.

In this paper, two types of low-grade complex zinc oxide ores (sandstone and limestone ores) from Yunnan province, China were investigated. A large number of argillaceous and alkaline gangue makes it infeasible to treat the ores with heap leaching. Although wet metallurgy can be considered, the lower efficiency of liquid-solid separation, the high cost, and low revenue limit this technology to be put into practice in large-scale. In order to solve this problem, a new technology combining mineral processing method with metallurgy technique is studied to process this refractory ore that consists of sandstone ore with 5.84 per centZn and limestone ore with 6.50 per centZn. The results of the tests showed that zinc can effectively be recovered from two types of the ores by using the new technology, and the acid consumption can be remarkably reduced. For sandstone sample, 82.96 per cent Zn was recovered by flotation and final Zn recovery by flotation+ hydro-metallurgy can be up to 78.17 per cent from the ore. In addition, for sandstone, acid consumption can be reduced from 270kg/t by direct acid, leaching to 76.92kg/t by flotation + hydrometallurgy combination. For limestone sample, 85.90 per centZn was recovered by flotation and totally 80.95 per cent Zn can be recovered by new technology which is a combination of mineral processing and metallurgy. Besides, H2SO4 consumption can be reduced from 450kg/t for sandstone originally to113.79kg/t after using new technology. One merit of this new process technology is that the zinc sulfides and oxides can be recovered without desliming in the flotation cells at the different stage and make sure the concentrate products as a good feed for hydrometallurgical technology. This study provided pretty good technical support for tapping low-grade refractory zinc oxide ores. "The platinum group metals (PGMs) and associated minerals are particularly refractory to most traditional direct leach processes. However, the remoteness of many new ore deposits, socio-political risks, the scarcity of skilled labor and constraints on the availability of water and electrical power makes it increasingly more difficult to implement the conventional mill-float-smelt-refine process routes to extract and refine PGMs in remote areas. This paper discusses a process to extract PGM’s from low grade ore and concentrate using a sequential stage heap leach process entailing heap bioleaching and high temperature cyanide leaching, and evaluates the feasibility of implementing a carbon-in-pulp process to recover the PGMs from the pregnant leach solution. The heap bioleaching extracts the base metals in an acidic sulfate medium using a mixed culture of thermophiles. After heap bioleaching the heap is reclaimed, rinsed, agglomerated and restacked for high temperature cyanide leaching where the cyanide liquor is directly heated via solar energy in panels. Palladium, gold and platinum are recovered during the cyanide leaching stage. The pregnant leach solution was evaluated for potential carbon-in-pulp adsorption and subsequent elution similar to gold processing. The kinetics of adsorption and elution compared well with gold adsorption and elution."

This will allow development of efficient process flowsheet for product recovery and compliance with regulatory guidelines. This paper will discuss our recent developments in mineral processing and hydrometallurgical technologies to recover gold and titanium dioxide from a wide range of feed materials including ores, concentrates and tailings.

Rare metal ores have those features of high industrial value and bad performance in ore separation. Most of rare metals ores are with low grade of valuable components, rareness of useful minerals, complicated combination of associated minerals and high difficulty in separation and enrichment of minerals. For those single (Ta, Nb) or (Ta, Nb, Sn) ore occurred in granite and pegmatite, the ways of gravity separation and magneto electric separation to concentrate (Ta, Nb) minerals are adopted. There are many mines being explored successfully both at home and aboard. While, for complex (Nb-Zr-REE) ores associated with Be and Ti minerals, they are commonly considered as rich rare metals ore but more difficult to process. One of rare metals mine in Inner Mongolia has the features as with large reserves and high grade of columbium and zirconium and accompanies with REE and beryllium, therefore with significant industrial value. After the utilization of research method of process mineralogy, detailed mineralogy research has been made on the rare metals ore. The test results show that there are abroad isomorphism replacements among such elements, such as Ti, Mn, Fe, Nb and Ta, between Be and REE in metallic oxide minerals of that ore, which makes the mineral composition of that ore extremely complicated. This research identifies clearly the mineral composition, and investigate at the technological property and the occurrence of those elements as Nb, Zr, Be and REE in the rare metal ore. The achievements of this research provide important mineralogy basis for ore dressing research of refractory rare metallic ores.

"Developed countries are in the midst of re-structuring education in minerals-related disciplines as raw materials, once vital to wealth generation, contribute progressively less to the economy. The changing circumstances mean institutions must justify mineral processing by new criteria. After considering what a mineral processor needs to know the ways to deliver are considered. Taking twenty graduates per year to illustrate, one institute could justify this number as a program in a department or school (of whatever grouping of disciplines). A strong research component would make the package additionally attractive. Divide among four institutions and mineral processing is best served in a research centre with delivery taking advantage of multi-centre and distance learning opportunities.INTRODUCTIONThis is one of five plenary lectures at the Congress. I may have preferred a technical subject, as that is what occupies most of my thinking hours, but it is reasonable as an academic that this topic should come to one of us. The fact the topic has not been high on my agenda may provide one advantage: that I can suggest directions free of pre-conceived notions, just as when reviewing the background to a technical article the temptation to select in support of one?s interpretations is resisted. The trick will be to add something new.One reading of the title seems to query whether mineral processing education has a future. (I will refrain at this juncture from defining mineral processing and assume for now we share an understanding of the term.) The proximity of natural and human resources led to the Industrial Revolution and the interaction continues to stimulate and sustain industrial and economic development in many parts of the world. The search for raw materials has historically played a key role in opening frontier areas, with undersea and outer space next. The reason is obvious: raw materials along with food and energy underpin society. Thus mining will remain part of human activity along with the need to pass on the knowledge and skills.What happens over time is resource relocation. Raw materials become exhausted in one area to be replaced by sources elsewhere; the demand for some materials lessens while growing for others. Educational institutions can find themselves with the wrong geography or with staff focussing on the wrong subjects. When this happens the restructuring produces much discussion. This is where we are in parts of the world. Japan, Western Europe and the United States are the prominent examples (Dowd, 1998; Flemings and Suresh, 2001; McDivitt, 2002). Mineral processing is becoming a series of courses in related disciplines: resource engineering, environment engineering or materials engineering. The start of the transition is evident in Canada and Australia, perhaps earlier than expected given the contribution of raw materials to their economies. A common backdrop in the developed countries is social pressure to reduce the impact of the ?untidy? aspects of life, and that includes mining. (This is not new: in classical times the mine face was the preserve of slaves and convicts.) These values are exportable, potentially affecting recruitment into mining schools everywhere."

The ultimate goal of a mineral processing plant is to recover as much of the target mineral(s) as possible from the ore being treated to achieve the best economics. Selection of the mineral processing techniques is the most important step in achieving this goal. However, due to the complexity of the ore, the recoveries of valuable minerals may be not satisfactory even when the mineral processing technique(s) are well chosen. In other words, minerals of interest can be lost to the tailings for mineralogical reasons. For example, gold is mainly extracted from the ore by gravity, flotation, cyanidation, or a combination of these processes, and high recovery (>90%) can be achieved when gold occurs as coarse grains. However, when a refractory ore is being processed, gold extraction will be challenged by mineralogical factors, which often cause gold losses to various tailings. Mineralogical factors affecting gold recovery mainly include grain size, shape, surface coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of slow-dissolving gold minerals and the refractory nature of submicroscopic gold. Among these factors, locking in sulphide, silicate and other minerals as fine-grained gold inclusions and/or as invisible submicroscopic gold is by far the most common factor leading to poor gold recovery encountered in gold ore processing. Processing of PGE ores faces the same challenges as gold. Small grain size and locking of PGM in sulphide and non-sulphide minerals often cause PGM losses. When silver ore contains significant amounts of pyrargyrite, proustite and stephanite, silver recovery by cyanidation can be very low because of the slow dissolving kinetics of these minerals. In the processing of base metal ores, high content of pyrite, intergrowth of chalcopyrite with sphalerite and presence of clay miner-als may cause problems in recovering Cu-, Pb- and Zn- bearing minerals. Process mineralogy helps address all issues and problems related to mineral processing with predicting and trouble-shooting being two major objectives. It provides useful information on process selection, flowsheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimization. The information acquired from a process mineralogical study can be used as a guide for a metallurgical testwork program for process design or optimization.
