During sintering, porous ore particles are easily assimilated by liquid melt. Two simple models of the process are considered: the dissolution of a solid by a liquid and the penetration of a liquid into a porous solid. Laboratory sintering studies covering a range of experimental conditions were undertaken to characterise the assimilation of large particles of ore and flux by melts formed from different mixes of fines. For ores, the process appeared to be complicated by the detachment of fines from the ore surface prior to melt formation, according to the mass of adhering fines and surface roughness of the particle. This delayed the onset of assimilation and sometimes reduced it, although melt penetration was fast and effective. Studies using different temperature profiles suggested that the assimilation of haematite was controlled by the transport of Fe2O3 away from the surface of ore particles. The assimilation of limestone depended more on thermal conditions than on the three magnesia-bearing minerals considered. Changing the composition of the initial melt significantly altered the extent of assimilation of ores and limestone, but again had a less marked effect on the magnesia-bearing fluxes.

The two best known graphical methods for presenting and comparing comminution data are obtained by linearising the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and the Rosin-Rammler size distribution equations. It is shown that the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation can cause excessive congestion in the 50 per cent oversize range and that, overall, the Rosin-Rammler is a better procedure. Examples are given

An outline account is given of the smelting of copper and the chemistry of the process. A table provides compositions of the more important minerals from which copper is won by smelting. Roasting is discussed as is smelting using reverberatory furnaces, blast furnaces and flash smelting. A brief discussion of converting covers the upright (Great Falls) converter and the horizontal (Peirce-Smith) converter.

Microporous ceramic tubes (15 micrometre pore diameter) and PVC membranes (10 micrometre diameter) have been used as spargers in the electrowinning of copper from concentrated and dilute chloride electrolytes. At a current density of 600 A/m2 and a nitrogen gas sparging flow rate (at NTP) of 1.53 cm3/s per unit electrode length, it was possible to electrowin planar rather than powdery deposits with copper concentrations as low as 0.157 M. To obtain a planar deposit at higher concentrations of cupric chloride the most realistic optimum current density appears to be between 1 000 and 1 500 A/m2.

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. This paper outlines the the methods currently being used in the West Wales Area for preventing the occurrence of any outbreak of spontaneous combustion. Stress is placed on the importance of correlating the position of a Rider Seam which is prone to spontaneous combustion. The recent introduction of the UNOR Recorder has contributed to the ability to monitor the CO content of the general body of the air during any incident. The use of modern sealants and improved methods of applying them have enabled the few instances of spontaneous combustion in South Wales to be treated promptly and efficiently. The authors describe the current spontaneous combustion problems at two collieries.

"The Koillismaa layered igneous complex is the result of igneous activity that occurred 2436±5 m.y. ago. Its crystallization took place in three separate but connected magma chambers, the total volume of which is estimated at more than 2000 km'. These chambers were located partly in a feeder system within Archaean granitoids and partly in an unconformity between these grani­ toids and Early Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. The composition of the parental magma that initially filled the chambers is thought to have been that of a relatively MgO-rich tholeiite. Sulphides and platinum-group minerals are mainly concentrated in the marginal series of the western part, where they are encountered over a distance of 25 km. This marginal series is an originally nearly horizontal series of rock types that displays a reversed differentiation trend, grading inwards from gabbroic to ultramafic rocks, followed bv rocks of the layered series. The chilled margin is not encountered anywhere in its original position at the contact, probably as a consequence of magmatic erosion, but remnants are to be found in the form of elongated xenoliths. Partly melted siliceous fragments from gneissic country rock typical of the lower part of the marginal series indicate pronounced contamination.Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite±pyrite are the predominant sulphides. The accessory sulphide minerals include covellite, violarite, marcasite, mackinawite, sphalerite and argentian pentlandite. Platinum-group minerals are represented by froodite, michenerite, merenskyite and sperrylite. Other accessories that have been identified are electrum and native copper and gold. The mean of the Cu/(Cu+Ni) ratio in the mineralizations is 0.67 and Pt/(Pt+Pd) 0.31.It is suggested that the sulphide phase was formed in the marginal series as the solubility of sulphur in the basic magma was lowered by contamination, possibly assisted by some other factors. The sulphur isotope data support the juvenile origin of the sulphur."

When heated in the absence of oxygen, pyrite from refractory gold concentrates decomposes endothermically to pyrrhotite, releasing sulphur. The decomposition starts at the particle surface and progresses inwards, leaving an adhering layer of porous pyrrhotite. Use of the conventional shrinking-core model implicitly assumes a negligible partial pressure of sulphur in the bed, but this pressure is in fact at least equal to the equilibrium vapour pressure of sulphur over pyrite, constituting the principal control of the rate of decomposition. Further experiments showed a decrease in reaction rate as the conversion increased. Both phenomena are attributed to the persistence of non-isothermal conditions in the fluidised bed during pyrolysis, caused by the endothermic nature of the reaction and the relatively slow rates of heat transfer to particles and vapour removal from the bed. A comparison was made of three methods for determining the contributions of true flotation and entrainment during batch flotation tests. In the first method size-by-size recoveries are measured in both the presence and the absence of a collector, a frother being present in both tests. In the second method the mass of solids and water recovered after a chosen time of flotation is varied by changing the rate of froth removal and the depth of the froth. The third method uses a transfer factor to describe the classification of solids and water, and hence the changes in the composition of the pulp, during a single flotation test. Batch flotation tests were carried out with artificial mixtures of pyrite and gangue, the amount of floated material recovered being calculated according to each of the three methods. The discrepancies betweeen the calculated amounts are analysed in terms of the assumptions that are made for the various methods and the most suitable conditions for the application of each method are identified

The general view of the author is that all the good intentions of manufacturers can fail completely if the variations in circumstances in underground mining are not considered at all times. With a belief that it is the customer that has the experience and know ledge of problems which occur on long installations. Reilloc talk with customers in coal mines around the world, and have done so from their inception. With considerable experience in their home market, their technical approach was received with enthusiasm by coal companies in both Australia and South Africa, and whilst experience was obtained in other countries, it is the particularly close working relationship in these two areas that is covered in this paper. The refinement of manufacturing techniques and the fine tuning of the specification to which the chain is made was developed in conjunction with factual underground experience obtained by customers as they sought to improve their productivity and a reduction in working costs. With a reliable product the mines are able to concentrate on improved operational techniques to extend the useful working life and plan for multi-panel usage of the chain.

The philosophy and detail of mill design in developing countries, where it is frequently difficult to obtain experienced, qualified supervision to operate the plant, are discussed. The resulting design suggests the desirability of simple units, with maximum visibility of equipment operation and material movement, which allow the minimal technical supervision to see the plant conditions prevailing. Information on plant conditions during periods of lesser supervision can be provided by the use of simple, low-maintenance recorders. Where the mill is intended for operation in a developing country, it is insufficient for the flowsheets and plant layouts merely to be drawn: the process metallurgist must pay meticulous attention to details that could ordinarily be left to the design detailing group. The design of this type of mill requires a knowledge of human engineering—of the type of individual who will operate and supervise the plant; probable changes in personnel should be taken into account. Details are suggested for coarse-ore handling, screens, feeders, secondary and tertiary crushers, conveyors, dust collecting, fine-ore feeding, grinding mills, conditioners, flotation, thickeners, filters, reagent systems, sand pumping, sampling, instrumentation, safety and construction

Investigations of the dispersion of gold in soils and stream sediments associated with three gold deposits in Thailand indicate the existence of different geochemical dispersion patterns in the three areas, demonstrating the need for the adoption of a variety of exploration techniques. The three gold deposits which were investigated were the Phu Tham Phra-Phu Thong Daeng copper-gold prospect, the Doi Tung and the Huai Hin Lab gold prospects. Overall the investigations at the three localities demonstrate clearly that the chances of exploration success can be significantly enhanced if composite soil samples are analysed to ensure a more reliable estimation of the gold content in soils and if both the 63 micrometre fraction and the field-panned concentrates of stream sediments are analysed because of the variable grain size of the gold characterising different gold deposits and surface environments.

"During the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex in the Potgietersrus area magma reacted with the original floor rocks— Archaean granite or Malmani dolomite and overlying Penge handed ironstone or sedimentary rocks of the Pretoria Series. The complex sequence of sulphide-rich mafic rocks that formed along the contact is known as the Platreef. Associated with the sul­ phide mineralization are important concentrations of platinum-group metals, copper and nickel. Xenoliths of Malmani dolo­ mite have been incorporated into the Platreef and previous work has suggested that anhydrite is likely to have been present in the dolomite. The sedimentarv-derived sulphur thus introduced into the magma exercised an important control on the forma­ tion of the sulphides.Petrographic studies on the Platreef rocks from the Tweefontein area indicate that the original magma reacted with the banded ironstone to form iron-rich pyroxenites. In the Turfspruit area, to the south, the footwall rocks consist of sediments of the Timeball Hill Series. Original argillaceous rocks have been metamorphosed to cordierite-, corundum- and spinel-bearing hornfelses. Graphite was present in the contact zone in both the Tweefontein and Turfspruit areas. Anhydrite-bearing hornfels rocks are also present on Turfspruit.The Platreef rocks that overlie the corundum- and spinel-bearing hornfelses on Turfspruit are peridotitie, and pyroxenites are present in areas underlain by cordierite-bearing hornfels. The absence of orthopyroxene in the peridotite is probably indicative of low silica activity in the original magma. The pyroxenites have, however, undergone silica contamination from the underlying more siliceous cordierite hornfels.Carbon isotope studies indicate that the graphite in the Tweefontein and Turfspruit samples represents organic material orig­ inally associated with the footwall sediments. Sulphur isotope determinations on the anhydrite-bearing floor rocks indicate that this phase is clearly of sedimentary origin and was probably derived from an evaporitic unit within the carbonate sequence. This provides firm support for a model of ore genesis that involved the introduction of additional sulphur into the Bushveld magma. Isotope studies on sulphides associated with the banded ironstone and graphite indicate that these units were not the source of additional sulphur. Experimental studies predict, however, that a magma contaminated with iron- and carbon-rich material would have a high sulphur-carrying capacity. Where additional sulphur is available the magma would achieve saturation early in its crystallization history and precipitate an immiscible sulphide phase. Experimental work has also shown that sulphide precipi­ tation can be triggered by the introduction of salic material into a magma close to sulphur saturation. This mechanism probably played a role in the control of the sulphide mineralization in the Turfspruit area."

B.P.J. Stevens contributes a further response to the authors' earlier lengthy reply regarding their paper published in Trans.IMM B, vol.104, 1995, p.B1-B17, contending that despite the positive contribution clarifying their interpretations they perpetrate some misquotations, attempt to rewrite history and fail to understand the New South Wales Geological Survey's stratigraphic interpretation of the Broken Hill area. The paper's authors, in their further response, robustly defend their views, insisting that Stevens tends to misquote or take out of context what they have written and reiterating their findings that Zn is tectonically stacked above Pb at the north end of the orebody, that the written development of the stratigraphic interpretation is as they have stated, that shearing has attenuated or removed fold limbs in the Broken Hill block and that the 1:100 000 stratigraphic map reveals that magnetic anomalies are oblique to and truncated by the Geological Survey's interpreted stratigraphic boundaries

An experimental flash reactor has been developed to simulate the operation of an industrial flash-smelter reaction shaft. Four concentrate materials of differing mineralogical compositions were characterised and then oxidised in the reaction shaft. The products were examined by chemical analysis to determine the extent of oxidation and by electron-probe microanalysis to determine the fate of individual particles. This programme of work enabled the influence of mineralogical composition and particle size on the extent of oxidation to be assessed

Two prominent local species, Dendrocalmus strictus (bamboo) and Saccharum spontaneum (kashi), and two exotic species, Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass) and Vetiveria zizanoides (vetiver), were selected for growth trials on dumps at Mandaman, Chora, Mudidih, South Balanda and Ghugus. The climate at these sites is dry tropical and the surface soil layer a slightly acid to neutral sandy to clayey loam 10-11 cm thick, impoverished in major plant nutrients. After two years bamboo had grown the most, up to 325 cm in height, and contributed the greatest biomass, 638 g/m2 of plant. The local kashi species had a very good regenerative capacity, which was lacking in the lemon grass and vetiver. The grasses had very good soil-binding capacity and could also provide income if used as cash crops

Residual subsidence is generally accepted as being about 5% of the total subsidence occurring within 12 months of all mining finishing. This paper looks at five case studies from different parts of the country, in various mining settings within a depth range of 430m to 760m. From a single seam single panel working to working the eleventh seam, all are within the concealed coalfield, similar to today's mining. The monitoring of subsidence continued for many years once the mining had finished and the results obtained are at considerable variance from the accepted norm. Subsidence has been found to carry on for up to eleven years after mining has ended, within a range of 8% to 45% of total subsidence. A highly significant factor was that subsidence, as a whole, was generally much more than predicted. The residual subsidence aspect has to he viewed in this context and in order to debate the subject at length, the causes of residual subsidence have to be balanced against the apparent inability to accurately predict subsidence. The results from the case studies were similar, even though the mining settings differed considerably. Subsidence of around 10% to 20% continued for several years after mining had ceased.

Tailings from three historical mining areas in the UK were leached in columns under a simulated weathering programme which was chosen to represent periods of 1 and 2 years at 3 different ambient temperatures. The total concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the primary ore minerals present in the tailings showed only a limited correlation with metal concentrations in the leachate. The leachate from columns of tailings that were maintained at a temperature of 25 (+/-3) degrees C contained, on average, 50% more Pb and 75% more Cu than leachate from tailings that were maintained at a temperature of 10 (+/-3) degrees C. The pH values of leachates from all three types of tailings at 25 (+/-3) degrees C were 0.2 units lower than those from columns maintained at 10 (+/-3) degrees C. The concentration of Cd and Zn in the tailings leachates showed no marked difference at the different temperatures. The composition of the leachate was found to be dependent on the type of gangue mineral, the presence of other sulphide minerals and the formation of secondary iron minerals. A comparison of the concentrations of heavy metals in the leachates produced in the laboratory with those in leachates that were collected in the field over a similar period of time from two of the mine sites showed that concentrations were of a similar order.

The technical capabilities and user-friendliness of the major computer-aided mining design software systems are reviewed. Recent experiences with three systems are outlined to indicate the practical problems that arise. The examples were: Microlynx software from Lynx Geosystems at the Great Dyke platinum mine in Zimbabwe; Lynx software from Lynx Geosystems at a copper mine in central Africa; and PC-MINE software from Gemcom Services at an open-pit gold project in Western Australia. Difficulties in the use of mining design software has led to an alternative approach. Falconbridge, Canada, has developed an integrated mine-planning system on a CAD platform that encompasses ore reserve estimation, stope design, development layout and survey control. Future directions of computer-aided mining design using this basis are discussed. A major advantage of using mainstream software packages, such as spreadsheets, databases and CAD programs, is that most engineers and geologists are experienced in handling such systems in the normal course of their work.

This is the first Presidential Address given to the Nottinghamshire Branch of The Institution following the merger of the Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire Branch of The Institution of Mining Engineers (IMinE) and the Midland Branch of The Institution of Mining Electrical and Mining Mechanical Engineers (IMEMME). I intend to review the formation of the individual institutions as well as what has been achieved by mining related institutions over the years and finally I intend to look to our future.
