This report describes and discusses present-day leaching technology employed to recover copper from low-grade mine and dump materials derived from the exploitation of copper ore deposits in the Western United States. Illustrations of the integral parts of the leaching, precipitation, and recovery operations at several copper-producing companies are presented. Schematic drawings are included to present typical flowsheets of leaching and precipitation operations. Operational problems common to most copper leaching and precipitation plants are discussed. Areas of present and future research to improve leaching techniques are cited.

This report is the 23d in a series summarizing research and technologic work by the Federal Bureau of Mines on coal and related investigations; it is the fifth report to be issued on a calendar-year basis.2/ Publications by Bureau personnel in 1958 are cited;3/ in addition work in progress during the year is briefly described. To conserve our reserves of coal the Bureau of Mines conducts a program concerned with the development of fundamental information on coal characteristics and behavior, and the improvement of technology related to its production and utilization. The ability to anticipate and meet future demands for coal depends on a number of factors: (1) Knowledge of reserves from a stand- point of both quantity and quality; (2) the development of improved mining methods, health and safety measures, and preparation techniques that will insure its most efficient exploitation; and (3) knowledge of the controlling factors in efficient use of coal in combustion, carbonization, gasification, direct and indirect hydrogenation, and other new processes. The Bureau is concerned with each of these areas.4/,5/

The Bureau has been regarded as the world's premier mineral information and research agency. Its authoritative, comprehensive data and its pioneering research have contributed significantly to the minerals position of the United States. Yet no organization in today's complex, dynamic world, with its rapidly advancing technologies, can afford to rest on its laurels. Mission and program must be constantly fresh and relevant to the day's issues and problems. Moreover, rather than reacting to events, the organization must strive to anticipate and prepare for them. It must have a sense-a vision, if you will-for the future.

Following the gold discoveries of the late 1800's much was written regarding the vast mineral resources of Alaska, and much interest was aroused, and yet over the years little has been done to exploit those resources. Between 1906 and 1935 the Kennecott copper mines of the Copper River region were the keystone of the mineral economy (fig, 1). After the depletion of the Kennecott ore reserves and aided by the statutory rise in the price of gold, the yellow metal became the major mineral commodity. In recent years it has shared the honors with coal and sand and gravel. Although this trend should indicate the development of a stable, diversified mineral industry, yet the trend of production is downward. This report results from a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines to delineate the problems and to forecast the growth of the mineral industries in Alaska. The need for such a blueprint for the future was enhanced by the population explosion in the United States and the consequent eventual need for additional living space, as well as the current interest in new areas, and the necessity to develop reserves of strategic minerals.

The development of the Seminole area into one of the major oil-producing sections of the country has been accompanied by many innovations and departures from former methods of development. On July 1, 1929, two years and nine months from the date of discovery, 20,490 acres were considered proved, and additional acreage is constantly being developed. Because of its peculiar conditions, extent, and rapid rate of development, the Seminole area provided numerous problems, the solution of which necessitated research in connection with practical field operation; as a result, there was a radical departure from methods usually employed in the development of a new field in the Mid-Continent area.

"INTRODUCTION The behavior of particles in a sound field has long been of scientific interest since Kundt (1) 5/ made his classic experiments on some of the interesting effects of standing waves in cylindrical tubes. With the development of the electronic tube and its application to continuous generation of sound, experimental investigation of the Kundt tube was renewed (2). The more intense vibrations set up by a continuously vibrating diaphragm or rod produce even more striking effects than those observed by Kundt. Instead of the striations at the antinode produced by the stroked rod, then, wafer like barriers are formed at the antinodes, sometimes extending over the entire cross-section of the tube. Furthermore, it was observed independently by Andrade (3), Brandt, Freund and Hiedemann (4); and by investigators in the Bureau of Mines laboratories (5) that aerosols, such as ammonium chloride or tobacco smoke, could be flocculated quickly if passed through an intense sound field, particularly when a standing wave field was set up by a resonant enclosure. Because of its possibilities as a new means for removing suspended particles from dust-laden gaseous furance or smoke, the phenomena attending the behavior of suspended particles in a und field have been studied intermittently by the Bureau of Mines over the past decade.The first experimental work was done with a magnetostriction vibrator and a Hartmann air-jet generator as sound sources. It soon became evident that neither type was entirely satisfactory. Low mechanical efficiency is an inherent characteristic of magnetostriction generators, and the air-jet generator is difficult to control and does not permit accurate measurement of the acoustic output. The search for a suitable sound source led to the development of an electromagnetic generator, which is by far the most suitable for study of the effects of intensive high-frequency sound fields in gases (6)."

The U. S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs for improving mine safety. Of particular interest to the Bureau are new and improved means for minimizing the hazard of fire which can be initiated by prolonged low energy electrical faults on trolley line systems. When a high energy fault occurs on a trolley line, wherein the current exceeds the magnitude normally drawn by legitimate loads, such as locomotives, then the circuit breakers at close-by power rectifier sets trip. Tripping of the breakers not only protects the equipment at the rectifier sets, but also disconnects the energy source from the fault and thereby minimizes the fire risk. However, the fault current is frequently of a level substantially below that required to trip the overload breakers. When the fault is a substantial percentage of the set level of the breakers, the energy dissipated by the fault is frequently sufficient to clear the system by rapidly burning itself clear. Such a fault is often short-lived and does not present as serious a fire risk hazard as a prolonged, much lower energy fault, wherein the energy level is too low to clear the system. The breakdown of a trolley line insulator, in which there was a 15 to 30 ampere fault to ground, would represent such a fault or illegitimate load and a substantial fire risk.

This report presents the results of a program to develop backfilling techniques to mitigate undesirable effects of hydraulic borehole uranium mining. Large underground cavities, formed during the borehole mining process, can be backfilled to prevent ground subsidence and to allow mining of adjacent uraniferous sandstone. Three backfilling techniques were tested in the laboratory and in the field: bulk dumping of slurry into the borehole from ground level, slurry injection under water, and slurry injection above the cavity water level. These techniques were tested with sand and with sand and one percent cement (by weight) mixtures. The project was accomplished in four tasks: equipment preparation and transport, mining operation to generate a full-sized cavity, backfilling operation, and assessment through core samples and subsidence checks. The concentrations of cement mixed with sand proved to be inadequate to bond the sand. Bulk dumping resulted in a 30-degree angle-of-repose, much too steep to completely fill the cavity. Both slurry injection techniques filled the cavity satisfactorily. However, underwater injection is the recommended backfilling technique because the borehole water level does not need to be pumped down during backfilling. The borehole itself was filled by bulk dumping of slurry. In conclusion, backfilling of borehole mining cavities is entirely feasible, and the preferred method is slurry injection under water.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the relationship between cur-rent load and temperature rises in coal mine trailing cables. Six low-voltage, unshielded, portable power cables were continuously and intermittently loaded with direct current of various magnitudes. Temperature rises within and on the cables were measured with thermocouples, and the data were recorded with a computer. Thermal time constants were calculated, which fixed the periods of the duty-cycle tests. Relationships between average temperature at the conductor-insulation interface and current load were established. The steady-state and intermittent currents that produce a 90° C average conductor-insulation temperature were then determined. Comparisons with Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICE A) steady-state ratings revealed that 10 to 25 pct more current than recommended ICEA ampacities is required to reach rated insulation temperature. Examination of the maximum intermittent temperatures attained showed that autoignition of coal dust and burn injuries to personnel handling the cable would not be concerns if the temperature at the conductor-insulation interface averaged 90° C.

"Interest in the fine structure of soots and carbon blacks is motivated by a variety of possible applications. The structure provides information on the origins of the particles and on their adsorptive and reactive properties. This paper describes a method for quantification of the structure of soots and carbon blacks based on direct electron microscopic observation followed by image analysis of these materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides a very detailed observation of particle structure. The differences in soot structure, because of its complexity, may not be easily quantifiable with the human eye; therefore, high-level computer software has been used to manipulate HRTEM images. This technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms (FFT) to single particles and the measurement of characteristic parameters such as interplanar spacings and crystallite sizes from these particles. The methodology and application of this characterization technique are presented here. Results are shown for dif¬ferent samples obtained from soot and carbon black particles selected to illustrate the capabilities of the methodology. Quantitative information can be obtained on structural characteristics, e.g., interplanar spacing, circularity, orientation, elongation, and length distribution of lattice fringes, as well as on the fractional coverage of the extracted pattern. c 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This paper presents a combination of techniques for recognizing and classifying different carbonaceous materials, using their structural morphology. A new method to assess and quantify the parameters which define such structures is proposed and discussed. The technique is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, cokes, chars, etc. possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure (Buseck and Bo-Jun, 1985; Buseck et al., 1987). The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic (Oberlin, 1989) or as crumpled sheets (Rouzaud et al., 1991) to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers, but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as on the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of the electron microscope in studying the morphology of such materials has been well-established, and abundant information is available (Ishiguro et al., 1991; Lahaye and Prado, 1978; Buseck, 1992).The use of HRTEM has brought further insight into this matter. Qualitative assessment of the structural order of such materials has been attempted over a long period of time in order to differentiate between various sources or treatments. There is, to date, no successful method available for quantifying the structural characteristics of various carbonaceous materials. This paper presents a technique which is able to recognize dif-ferent materials and to quantify the structural parameters of those materials using HRTEM and computational image analysis, including pattern recognition techniques.In the case of perfectly ordered graphitic crystals, electron diffraction is widely used for obtaining details on structure. Analysis of diffraction patterns can reveal parameters such as interplanar spacing, d002, crystallite size along the c-axis, Lc, crystal size in the plane of the layers, L., mean number of crystallites, Nc, etc.Complicated electron microscopy methods such as defocusing, tilted illumination, axial illumination, etc., often have to be used in order to characterize complex materials such as randomly oriented crystals in soots and carbons. A technique was devised for measuring the rate of chemical reactions between reactive metals and molten-salt mixtures at high temperatures. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between high-purity titanium metal and titanium trichloride in molten sodium chloride was determined. The reaction is surface-controlled, and the heat of activation is 8.29 kilocalories per mole TiC13. An active site or reaction nuclei is created by adsorbing a TiC13 molecule at the metal surface. Reaction of the second TiC13 species forms an activated complex that decomposes into three TiC12 molecules.

A reconnaissance study of kyanite-group mineral deposits in the Northwest has revealed large exploitable reserves of the mullite-forming raw materials in the Woodrat Mountain and Goat Mountain districts of north-central Idaho. Potential coproducts or byproducts are garnet and muscovite mica. The Woodrat Mountain district contains garnet-kyanite-mica schist, which has been traced for 6 miles and may extend farther. Surface samples average 29 percent kyanite and contain up to 15 percent garnet. Inferred reserves of strippable ore with a low waste-to-ore ratio, and containing more than 15 percent kyanite, are more than 3 billion short tons. The Goat Mountain district contains several kyanite-mineral zones. Samples of the richest zones average from 10 to 20 percent kyanite minerals and represent about 200 million short tons of strippable rock. Beneficiation tests indicate that the kyanite minerals and garnet can be concentrated by a combination of gravity, flotation, and electromagnetic methods. Reserves in these deposits are sufficient to satisfy any foreseeable domestic and export demand. However, the freight tariff to reach the nearest major users of kyanite (located in the Midwest) has discouraged development of western kyanite resources. Western demand of a magnitude to support a moderate to large milling operation has not yet been developed. However, there is some foreign market potential. If a garnet byproduct could be prepared and sold for coated abrasive products or as grinding grains, an offset possibly could be gained to a por¬tion of the mining and milling costs for the Pacific Northwest producer. Such byproduct values would offer a means for expanding the geographic market areas as well as the regional market potential.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the nature and frequency of coal mine roof failure beneath valleys. A mechanism for this failure and suggestions for controlling this problem are presented. Hazardous roof conditions identified in some mines were positively correlated with mining activities beneath stream valleys. Mine maps with overlays of unstable roof and locations of stream valleys show that 52 pct of the instances of all unstable roof in the surveyed mines occurred directly beneath the bottom-most part of the valley. The survey also showed that broad, flat-bottomed valleys were more likely to be sites of hazardous roof than narrow-bottomed valleys. Evidence of valley stress relief was found beneath several valleys in the form of bedding plane faults and low-angle thrust faults. This type of failure, previously believed to be only a shallow phenomena, was found at mining depths as great as 300 ft. In situ, horizontal stress measurements beneath a valley and the adjacent hillsides, confirmed valley stress relief. Numerical analysis of 13 valleys overlying one mine property showed the effect of the valley excavation on horizontal and vertical stress.

DOMESTIC production of carbon black increased 4 percent in 1962 to 2,056 million pounds. Furnace black output was 8 percent, or 132 million pounds, above that in 1961 and accounted for 90 percent of total carbon black production. Channel black output continued to decline and was 55 million pounds less than in 1961. Carbon black shipments during the year totaled 2,082 million pounds and were 5 percent above those of 1961. About one-fifth of these shipments were exported; the balance were sold domestically. An increase of 180 million pounds in domestic sales was partially offset by a decline of 80 million pounds in exports. Total value of carbon black production in 1962 was $145 million. The average value per pound of 7.06 cents was 0.24 cent per pound less than in 1961. Producers' stocks declined 26 million pounds during the year.

"INTRODUCTION The Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, is investigating cushioned blasting at the Explosives Testing Station, Bruceton, Pa. The general interests of this investigation are practical and relate particularly to safety. The immediate concern is an application of cushioned blasting in coal mining.In cushioned blasting, various means are employed to reduce the intensity of the application of energy in an explosive action in a borehole. The primary object is to increase the efficiency of the use of explosives. Cushioned blasting is designed to save the energy usually lost in excessive shattering and in this way to effect economies and to produce increased proportions of desirable lump coal. That this saving should lead to greater efficiency is indicated by an analogy with the theory and experience of size-redaction by crushing or grinding from which it is known that a large proportion of the energy consumed is expended in producing the smaller sizes (26),3/. Aside from these considerations, increasing the yield of lump coal is important in practice because larger sizes of coal usually sell at higher prices. Some statistics published in England in 1934 (63) illustrate the economic origin of the interest in increasing yields of lump coal; these indicate for three sizes of coal that as the size decreases the value decreases in the approximate series 3:1.5:1, thus:"
