The possibility of using ultrasonic energy as a tool to improve the electrolytic deposition of copper and zinc from several electrolytes was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Sound with frequencies of 20, 26, 38, and 400 kilocycles per second and acoustical intensities of 0.25 to 1.5 watts per square centimeter was employed. Measurements of cell voltage, anode and cathode current efficiencies, and electrode potentials were made at various current densities. Effects of ultrasonics on the quality of the deposit and on anode corrosion also was noted. In the electrolytic recovery of copper from an acid copper sulfate solution at 50° C., adherent, well-consolidated deposits are normally obtained up to a current density of 30 amperes per square foot. As the current density is increased above this value, the deposits normally become progressively more spongy and less adherent. Ultrasonic irradiation resulted in adherent and well-consolidated deposits at current densities up to 300 amperes per square foot. Radiation also produced smaller grain size and preferred orientation of the copper crystals. In addition, radiation caused as much as 3-volt decreases in cell voltages at the higher current densities. These decreases were caused chiefly by depolarization of the anode, although small depolarization effects were also noted at the cathode. Radiation apparently did not greatly affect cathode-current efficiencies, but prevented excessive anode corrosion at the higher current densities and resulted in more uniform corrosion. Ultrasonic radiation at a frequency of 400 kilocycles per second was not as effective as radiation at the lower frequencies. Circulation of the electrolyte at rates up to 5 percent of the cell capacity per minute did not produce results comparable to those effected by ultrasonic radiation. Rapid rotation of the cathode up to 1,800 revolutions per minute gave results approaching those obtained with ultrasonics.

This information circular describes a computer program called VARSAT2D, a comprehensive unsaturated fluid flow simulator developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. VARSAT2D solves for either a vertical or horizontal, transient or steady-state solution in variably saturated, heterogeneous, anisotropic porous media using the Galerkin finite-element approach. Simplex triangular elements are used. Moisture retention characteristics are described by specifying either the Brooks and Corey, Brutsaert, or Van Genuchten power functions, with hysteresis described using the Maulem independent domain model. Boundary conditions may include any combination of time-varying seepage, pressure along solution domain, boundaries and/or at internal node points, unit hydraulic gradient at the lower boundary, and a uniform source and/or sink. This program should be a welcome addition for mining and environmental hydrologists, researchers, and engineers interested in modeling unsaturated fluid flow.

The properties of crude petroleum continue to interest the Bureau of Mines and constitute an important phase of its major studies on the mineral resources of the United States. The Bureau's interest in the subject has been intensified by frequent requests for information on the characteristics of crude petroleum from various producing fields. Since its inception the Bureau of Mines has collected and analyzed samples of typical oils and at present has surveyed and classified crude petroleums from nearly all the known oil fields of the Western Hemisphere. Results of these surveys have been presented in various Bureau of Mines publications. (See bibliography, appendix A, p. 145.) The nature and comparative value of crude oils from various countries and the extent to which these oils may be considered potential competitors for markets are of manifest importance to the petroleum industry in all lands, largely because all crude oils, wherever produced, are either actual or potential competitors for a market with all other crude oils. The numerous discussions of foreign production of oil that have appeared in the technical press in the past indicate the great interest of the United States in this subject.

[Gypsum is one of the most important nonmetallic c minerals, as is indicated by the fact that the United States consumed approximately 3,500,000 tons of natural and calcined gypsum in 1937. The building trades were the largest users required 2,520,000 tons of calcine for production of plaster, wall board, tiles, block, and various other insulating and building materials. The glass and ceramic industries and other manufacturers required an additional 126,000 tons. The balance was used in the uncalcined condition as retarder in Portland cement and or agricultural purposes.]

A study was conducted for the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to provide information which will lead to an increase in the recycling of mineral materials, in order to help conserve the Nation's mineral resources. Data were collected on energy requirements to recycle prompt industrial and obsolete scrap for nine metal commodities: Iron and steel, aluminum, copper, zinc, lead, stainless steel, titanium, tin, and nickel and nickel alloys. Major process routes for recycling were considered, starting from the first collection point through scrap preparation, transportation, smelting and/or refining to the molten metal, ingot, or other semi- finished form approximately equivalent to a primary metal of a similar composition. Available data for 1976 were collected on the amounts of each metal commodity recycled by major scrap categories. In addition, energy requirements were estimated for separating municipal solid wastes into four major categories: Refuse-derived fuel, and magnetic, aluminum, and glass cullet fractions. Finally, areas of research were identified to enhance recycling and/or increase the efficiency of energy use.

The explosion occurred at about 3:05 p.m. in the largest of the 11 school buildings on the campus. This bulletin is the fourth of a series a showing the results of the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications. The work of inspecting and analyzing coal delivered on Government contracts was transferred to the Bureau of Mines by an act of Congress effective July 1, 1910. It had been carried on for several years before that date by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. The purchase of coal on the dealer's statement as to quality or on the reputation of the mine or district producing the coal is gradually being discontinued. At present most coal-purchasing contracts make definite provision regarding the desired heating value of a coal and the composition as shown by analysis. The heating value is usually expressed in British thermal units" and the composition specified is that shown by proximate" analysis. The price to be paid for delivered coal is made to depend on whether the analyses and heating-value tests of samples representing the delivery show the quality to be above or below the quality set forth in the contract. Large coal consumers are beginning to appreciate more and more the importance of the cost of power as a factor in the cost of producing a finished article. The endeavor to increase the efficiency and the economical operation of a power plant calls for an intimate knowledge of the quality of the coal being used. The purchase of coal under specifications insures the purchaser getting what he pays for and the coal being of the quality guaranteed. In addition, the analyses and tests of the delivered coal furnish data whereby the power-plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the conditions of operation.

Two recent unplanned detonations occurred during blasting operations in sulfide-bearing ores in a Nevada gold mine. Other premature detonations have also reportedly occurred at other Nevada, California, and Arizona operations within the past few years, with increasing frequency. Unplanned or premature detonations can be extremely hazardous to life and can cause extensive property damage. A miner was injured in one of these occurrences. This report, by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, is intended to acquaint personnel involved in such mining activities with the basic causes for these accidents. These causes include the exothermic oxidation of pyrite (FeS2) and formation of ferrous sulfate (FeS04), the exothermic and energetic reaction of the ferrous sulfate with ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO)-based explosives, and the associated elevated temperatures that can set off detonators and explosives in the boreholes. Recommendations for safe operation by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau, and the mine involved with the recent incidents include monitoring temperatures in the blast holes, analyzing for sulfate and ferrous ions, and limiting the time between loading and firing in accordance with conditions in the blast holes. Other procedures for safe operations should fit specific conditions in, the mines.

This report describes two goniometers that, by simple manipulation, can be used to ascertain the attitude of a joint, vein, or fracture plane observed on the planar projection of a borehole photograph taken with an NX borehole camera of the type developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. One goniometer was designed to interpret photographs taken in vertical drill holes and the other for photographs taken in inclined drill holes. In practice, several measurements are made on each photograph with the goniometer. These data are then substituted into mathematical equations, which are derived in this report and the attitudes of fracture planes are determined.

All technical facilities of the Bureau of Mines have been geared for more efficient use and conservation of mining equipment, developing plans for safety, improving the quality of coal through better methods of preparation, studying the problems of coal storage and utilization, and extending the uses of coal5/ for the war and postwar economy. The Bureau is now analyzing all of the coal purchased by the Army and much of that required by the Navy. Work on boiler feed water was doubled over last year to meet the increased demand made by the War Department for protecting vital boiler plants in many new camps and defense plants. Progress has been made in safely storing coal to reduce dangers of spontaneous ignition to a minimum and to preserve coking power. Mixtures of oil and coal to be used as a substitute fuel have been investigated. The major industrial uses of char or semicoke produced by low-temperature carbonization of coal4/ are as fuel for generating electric power, for blending with metallurgical coking coal as a substitute for low-volatile coals, and for gasification to produce synthesis gas for chemical purposes. This paper discusses various methods for carbonizing coal, emphasizing processing of the noncoking coals to produce char for thermal power-plant fuel and for blending with metallurgical coking coals and tar for chemical use. Low-temperature carbonization is a relatively simple processing step involving heating coal to about 900° to 1,200° F. to decompose the coal into 4 main products: (1) Semicoke or char; (2) complex, partly oxygenated liquid hydrocarbons or tar; (3) fixed gases; and (4) water. If the coal is heated rapidly under conditions that prevent decomposition of the primary products, 68 to 87 percent of the net heat in the raw coal is left in the char and 10 to 23 percent of the potential heat appears in the primary tar. Fixed gases represent approximately 7 percent of the heat and approximately 2 percent is lost or dissipated in the reactions of decomposition. Considering the different ranks of coal in the United States, the yield of tar will vary from about 9 to 44 gallons per ton, therefore it is important that each coal be carefully considered if it is to be carbonized for industrial use.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942.3/ Information Circular 7007,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved. Burin', the calendar year 1937. The present list includes most of the material liven in these two publications, as well as approvals that have been issued up to January l, 1940. Some equipment formerly listed has been omitted because it has become obsolete or is no longer actively marketed. The list now includes electrically-operated air compressors, coal drills, loading machines and conveyors, mining machine, mine ones, rock-dusting machines, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives and storage-battery power trucks, mine telephones, junction boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lens, flashlights, methane detectors, and single and multiple-shot blasting units. The appendix at the end of this circular lists trailing, cables that have passed tests prescribed by Schedule 2D. When equipment passes the inspections and tests prescribed by the United Status Department of the interior, Bureau of Mines, in published "schedules" or standards, it is formally approved as "permissible" for use in gassy mines, and the manufacturer is then permitted to mark it with an approval plate that identifies it as having been approved by the Bureau. Seasonally adjusted new factory orders for primary metals declined in January, February, and March, especially in the steel industry. The decline was part of an apparent slowdown for the entire manufacturing sector. Orders for all durable goods, including not only primary metals, but also clay, glass, and stone products, fabricated metal products, machinery, and transportation equipment, fell in January and February. In March, orders rose a slight 0.8%. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the downturns in durable goods orders in January and February were the first back-to-back declines in 3 years. They were largely attributed to a drop in orders for transportation equipment, mainly auto-mobiles and aircraft, while the small gain in March was due to a surge in aircraft orders. Higher interest rates may be partly responsible for the slowdown in durable goods orders over the past 3 months. The higher rates have also hit the construction industry--another major end-user of minerals. Construction of new homes and apartments fell by a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.4% in March, following a 12% decline in February.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 27,034-hectare Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area and the 16,544-hectare Breadwinner study area. There were approximately 535 lode and placer claims in or partially in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area, and 84 lode and placer claims in or partially in the Breadwinner study area. In the Atlanta and Rocky Bar mining districts, both adjacent to and in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area, 30,232.4 kg (972,000 02) of gold and 62,838.3 kg (2,020,000 02) of silver had been produced. Most of this production came from outside the study area. Placer properties adjacent to (and a few in) the Breadwinner study area had production of 93.1 kg (2,992 oz) of gold and 20.0 kg (642 02) of silver. Twelve properties in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area have potential for resources; eleven have alteration and/or mineralization similar to that found at Atlanta with potential for gold, silver, and tungsten resources, and one has alteration and mineralization associated with polymetallic vein type deposits with potential for gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten resources. Adjacent to the study area, large bars of gold-bearing gravel can be found along the Middle Fork Boise River. Four properties in the Breadwinner study area have potential for mineral resources; one has alteration and mineralization associated with skarn, polymetallic vein, and, possibly, copper-molybdenum and molybdenum porphyry types of deposits; two have alteration and metal assays associated with polymetallic vein, and possibly copper-molybdenum and molybdenum porphyry types of deposits; and one has alteration and mineralization similar to that found at Atlanta. These four have potential for gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, and tungsten resources Adjacent to and extending into the Breadwinner study area are large bars of gold-bearing gravel along North and Middle Forks Boise River.

Available literature published or abstracted in 1953 and 1954 relating to dust prevention and suppression has been summarized and reviewed in this report, and un-published information also is included to outline current practice for those interested in dust control in and around mines, tunnels, and quarries. More and more companies are realizing the value of controlling dust by incorporating suitable methods and devices in the planning stage. In preparation and crushing plants preliminary tests have been made of the fine materials to determine the best type of dust-control equipment to use, and the details of the quantities of air, the number of sprays, the dust-allaying fluids, and the location of hoods or enclosures have been determined in advance. Such planning has paid for itself in more effective control. Similar planning in a tunnel resulted in healthful conditions and low dust concentrations.

The United States not only is the largest producer of phosphate rock but also manufactures and consumes greater quantities of phosphate products than any other country. New and expanding uses will increase even further the demand for this basic raw material. Only a small proportion of the total quantity of phosphate rock mined and marketed is consumed directly in a raw or unprocessed state; the vast bulk is chemically treated and converted into [ertilizer] and a wide variety of finished products that play a vital role in [r] national economy. Three fundamental methods are employed in decomposing phosphate rock. 1. Reduction by carbon at high temperatures. 2. Treatment with one or more acids. 3. Calcination or fusion with silica, sodium salts, magnesium minerals, or small quantities of phosphoric acid.

During the past 6 years the Mining Division of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has prepared many information circulars containing valuable technical data covering the operating details of mining and ore-dressing plants throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries. These papers, written for the most part by operating officials in the field, have been designed to comprise a reference library for the operating engineer. In order to make the information contained in these publications more readily available to the busy engineer the enclosed series of reference tables has been compiled. The tabular arrangement is by subject rather than alphabetical order, thus avoiding the bulk of an alphabetical index.

This report presents the results of an investigation of comminution in tumbling mills. Five different topics involved with ball mill and rod mill grinding kinetics were studied and the results analyzed in terms of phenomenological size reduction and transport models. Continuous rod mill grinding was found to be characterized by high Peclet numbers which permit simulation to be carried out by several methods. The dry batch ball mill grinding of mineral mixtures showed that the breakage rates of the components were composition-dependent but time-independent and were normalizable with specific energy. Locked-cycle tests on mineral mixtures showed that a grinding circuit may take a long time to attain steady-state, during which time the composition of the mill holdings, and hence the breakage rates of the components, continuously changed. This study revealed that under plant conditions, grinding circuits can be in transience perpetually. The transport of mineral mixtures through drums was found to exhibit complex size and/or density-dependent segregation. However, the grinding media in a ball mill can eliminate such segregation, thereby simplifying the modeling of the continuous grinding of complex feeds. Wet batch rod mill grinding on single minerals divulged that the normalizability of breakage kinetics is valid for slurries of constant pulp density at different hold-ups but cannot be extended to slurries varying in pulp density.
