This paper is one of a series covering mineral resources of the Nation . It describes briefly most of the known manganese deposits of eastern Arizona , which for the purpose of this report includes the counties of Navajo , Apache , Gila, Graham, Greenlee , Pinal , Pima , Santa Cruz , and Cochise . With few exceptions , these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writers . Work on this paper was begun in May 1956 , and in the following 18 months 151 deposits were examined . The distribution of the deposits by counties is as follows : 1 in Navajo , and 1 in Apache , 37 in Gila , 4 in Graham, 13 in Greenlee , 25 in Pinal , 13 in Pima , 12 in Santa Cruz , and 45 in Cochise . In surveyed areas the locations of the deposits are described by section , township , and range and in unsurveyed areas , by approximate projections of these subdivisions . The township and range numbers refer to the Gila and Salt River base and meridian . The history, production, ownership , geologic setting , and mining methods used are discussed for most of the deposits that were visited . Probably , some occurrences have been overlooked , but all of the principal ones have been examined . Ore dressing studies were made of typical ores from several of the larger districts . The work was performed in the laboratory of the Bureau of Mines Tucson Metallurgy Research Laboratory . The results of these studies are given with the descriptions of the deposits from which the samples were taken .

"As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of mineral technology, the Gibbs energies of formation of MoS2 (molybdenite) and WS2 (tungsten disulfide) were determined with high-temperature galvanic cells employing stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electro¬lyte. In the temperature range from 867 to 1,209 K, potential measurements were obtained for the cellPt, MoS2 , Mo02 , SO2 = 1 atm // Zr02 // 02 = 0.0112 atm, Pt, with the overall cell reactionMoS2(c) + 3 02(g, 0.0112 atm) = Mo02 (c) + 2 S02(g). "Experiments in the determination of friction factors for fan-pipe installations were carried on in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-23, under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Anaconda Ccpper Mining Co. The results have been summarized in a separate paper,*** and this report, which is one of several giving more detailed data, discusses the methods used and the application of the results to fan-pipe practice.The use of canvas and galvanized-iron pipe, 8 to 20 inches in diameter, with small fans, usually electrically driven blowers, is an important factor in the ventilation of metal mines and is increasing in coal mines and long tunnels. In the Matte district the standard installation is an electrically driven small blower fan and 8 to 16 inch canvas pipe.The application of available data on friction losses in sheet-metal pipe to mine installations was doubtful, and very little has been published on canvas pipe, except general statements that the friction looses are greater than in galvanized-iron pipe. Experiments by Weeks and others,**** who determined friction losses under laboratory conditions for a few typical materials used in mine equipment, supported the statements.In 1918, one of the authors (Richardson) conducted tests for the Anaconda Copper Mining Cc. on the friction losses in canvas-pipe systems and the beet type of centrifugal blower for use with such pipe lines. He obtained the average total resistance per unit of length in use, without reference to the variable conditions of the lines. The results were of great value in developing more efficient equipment for average service conditions, and indicated that average friction losses for the commercial canvas tubing then used by the company were equal to or lees than these given for galvanized-iron pipe. Later on, the particular canvas tested was discarded for a heavier and more service-material."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on many topics relating to the hazards of coal mining, increased production, and protection of the environment. One area of research that has received scant attention in recent years is that of water inflows, probably because few fatalities in the United States have been attributed to them. As mining goes deeper, the problem of water in 1ow could increase dramatically because of adjacent or overlying mines in which huge water pools are impounded. Inaccurate mine maps and ineffective barriers can constitute a serious problem for operators both from gradual inflows and sudden inrushes of water. This report describes a wide but ineffective barrier that permitted an average 240-gpm inflow to a developing mine from an adjacent mine. The anomalous geologic structure that facilitated this leakage is described, demonstrating that size, alone, is no assurance against serious leakage. Some recommendations for managing serious water inflow are included.

This paper discusses accident experience and costs in 150 Colorado coal mines for the 5 years 1929-33; these mines produced 62 percent of Colorado's coal tonnage during this period. This and similar studies by the United states Bureau of Mines in other States (listed in the appendix to this report) make available comparable information on mine-accident costs and bring out clearly the importance of accident reduction from the humanitarian as well as from the economic standpoint. Compensation insurance costs constitute a considerable part of the cost of coal output. The tendency toward greater liberalization of workmen's compensation laws and increased benefits thereunder may mitigate to some extent the seriousness of an accident to a worker and his dependents, but no compensation is paid ultimately, not by an insurance fund but by the mine operator and the general public, which includes the miner. The one really effective method of reducing compensation costs is to reduce the number and severity of accidents.

The mechanics of coke formation are complex, and the specific properties of certain coals that tallow them to "cake" or form coke are still unknown. Coke is a hard, cellular, carbonaceous mass, formed by heating coal in the absence of air. It is porous, irregular in size and shape, and is similar in appearance to wood charcoal. Coke, however, is denser, more porous, and more abrasive than charcoal.

Continuous 1.0- to 1.5 - ton - per - hour pilot plant flotation tests were made to determine the technical and economic feasibility of recovering beryl from flotation tailing being produced at the spodumene concentrator of the Foote Mineral Company , Kings Mountain , N.C. Best results were obtained when using an acid circuit and amine - type cationic reagents to float a bulk beryl - feldspar concentrate and then selectively floating the beryl away from the feldspar , using a petroleum sulfonate collector . About 77 percent of the beryllium in the pilot plant feed was recovered in a concentrate containing 6.42 percent BeO . The capital cost of an integrated flotation plant capable of treating 500 dry tons of spodumene mill tailing per day for recovery of beryl and feldspar is estimated at $ 210,000 . Indicated direct operating costs for the plant were $ 1.52 per ton of dry spodumene flotation tailing treated . This approximated the value of beryl recovered , but potential profits of about the same magnitude lie in concurrent recovery of marketable spodumene and feldspar byproducts .

The solubility of anhydrous aluminum chloride in solutions of titanium tetrachloride and vanadium tetrachloride was determined as part of a re-search project-by the Bureau of Mines to make a homogeneous alloy sponge of titanium, vanadium, and aluminum. Solubility curves were established using an autoclave at 75°, 100°, 125°, and 150° C. The solubility of AJC13 in TiC14 is 0.2 wt pct at 75° C; it increases to 18.3 wt pct at 150° C. The data concur with data from earlier researchers of this bi-nary system for 75° to 125° C. For the VC14-AlC13 binary system the solubility of AlC13 is 0.1 wt pct at 75° C, increasing to 1.6 wt pct at 150° C. For the TiC14-AlClrVC14 ternary system the solubility of AlC13 decreases from the values found with a pure TiC14-AlC13 system to the lower values found with a pure VC14-AlC13 system at the respective temperatures.

Several parameters controlling the reproducibility of tritium determina¬tion in organic compounds by liquid scintillation counting were evaluated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These included optimum volume of scintillator solution for maximum counting efficiency, reproducibility of counting a sealed commercial standard and comparison with duplicate counts on laboratory-prepared samples. The error introduced by using microliter pipets, optical differences in counting vials, reproducibility of counting organic samples where quenching is a factor, reproducibility of counting laboratory-prepared samples with an added internal standard, optimum ratio of internal standard activity to sample activity, effect of sample volume upon counting efficiency, count rate at which coincidence losses become apparent, and reproducibility of organic compound radioassay by the standard addition technique are outlined. From the evaluation of these parameters, a technique that can be applied routinely to organic compounds containing tritium has been established, and details are included in this report.

Air compressor explosions that are caused by the ignition of combustible vapor mixtures cannot be explained by a single reaction mechanism or sequence of events. Explosions have been caused by the sudden release of large quantities of lubricating oil, by the rapid vaporization of oil that had accumulated slowly in high-pressure piping, and by the production of decomposition products from carbonaceous deposits. Ignitions can be caused by the heat produced in a catalytic reaction, in a compression process, or when a shock wave is propagated through a combustible vapor-air mixture. The frequency of these ignitions can be minimized by establishing proper maintenance and cleaning schedules. Further study is needed to satisfactorily correlate the various factors involved in compressor explosions.

This report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents compilations of inspection test data furnished on their products by manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline, and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, and 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.

The methods used and the funds available for the development and oper- ation of shall mines and the reopening of small abandoned mines frequently present problems that tax the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the mining engineer far beyond that required in the mass production from large deposits. The objective of this paper is to describe in considerable detail the means whereby engineers have solved local problems in reopening an abandoned mine at which equipment, facilities, and funds were limited... The Etowah Coal & Iron Co. Gadsden red-iron-ore mine at Gadsden, Ala., 18 of interest in this category since it is the only independent red-ore mine under active development in the State. All other red-ore mines in Alabama are owned or controlled by the large iron or steel companies. The The mine, located on the southwest end of Shinbone Ridge in the outskirts of Gadsden lies in an ares once productive. but now idle, for many years. ore is relatively highgrade compared with that in the Birmingham area, but the bed is thin and somewhat lenticular. The presence of a large blast furnace at Alabama City, 3 miles from Gadsden, and the growing scarcity of red-iron ore supplies for it offered inducements for reopening the mine in 1946. Up to the time this circular was prepared (1947) only a small quantity of ore (about 1,500 tons) has been produced and shipped to the furnace. A force of 14 men was employed in sinking the main slope and developing a third "lift" (a local term for level) 100 feet below the old mine workings.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained from limited diamond drilling at the lead-zinc deposits cf the Belle Eldridge Gold Mines, Inc., in Lawrence County, S. Dak. during the summer and fall of 1943. The work was undertaken in an effort to increase reserves and step-up production of zinc and lead so vitally important to the war program.The geology, topography and existing mine workings were mapped and studied. A series of studies of emissions from large coal-fired steam generators have included measurements of the concentrations of oxides of sulfur and oxides of notrogen. The sampling equipment, method of sampling, and analytical techniques used for processing of these samples are detailed. A method based on the precipitation of benzidine sulfate was developed for determining both SO3 and total oxides of sulfur in the presence of interfering acidic components in the stack gases. In addition, difficulties encountered with sampling and analytical techniques are also described.

Dust explosion data obtained in laboratory studies by the Bureau of Mines are presented for activated carbon, asphalt, charcoal, carbon black, coal, coke, gilsonite, graphite, lignite, miscellaneous carbons, pitch, tunnel dust, and mixtures of these materials with other ingredients. The explosion hazard is shown to increase as the volatile content of the dusts increases.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instruction3 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

In 1969, the number of fatal injuries in the coal mining industry was lower than in any previous year and the number of nonfatal injuries was lower than in any preceding year except 1968. Fatal injuries in 1969 totaled 203 with frequency rates of 0.85 per million man-hours of worktime and 0.36 per million tons of coal These rates were new annual lows. Nonfatal injuries totaled 9,917 with frequency rates of 41.76 per million man-hours and 17.42 per million tons. The severity rate for fatal and nonfatal injuries combined was 7,359 days lost or charged per million man-hours. The average severity was 173 days lost or charged per injury. These statistics represent the injury experience of an average of 133,302 employees per day working an average of 225 days in 5,955 coal mines for a total of 237-5 million man-hours worked and a coal output of 565 2 million tons
