The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on substitutes for chromium-containing alloys in order to conserve imported critical and strategic materials. Part of this research concentrates on finding low-chromium substitutes for heat-resisting stainless steels for the temperature range 600° to 800° C. Ferritic alloys are emphasized that have oxidation resistance provided by chromium contents as low as 10 pct and stress rupture strength provided by the precipitation of the chi(X)-phase intermetallic compound, (Fe36Cr12 (Mo, Ti)10). Initially, research was concentrated on selecting an alloy composition having a minimum chromium content with strengthening provided by the X-phase. An Fe-(10-12 pct)Cr-6 pct Mo-(1.5-2.0 pct)Ti alloy was selected. After the alloy selection, the tensile, stress rupture, and oxidation properties were determined. Stress rupture properties were found to be similar to those of 304 stainless steel. However, the alloys possessed brittleness during both stress rupture and tensile testing, possibly as a result of too high a content of molybdenum and titanium. Higher than expected oxidation rates were found that may be caused by the high molybdenum content.

A computer program for calculating the illumination on coal mine surfaces due to machine-mounted lights is described. Utilizing numerical models of mining machinery and measured data on luminaire output characteristics, the program computes the ft-candle levels incident on the mine entry surfaces for any desired machine/luminaire/ entry configuration. Shadowing effects of the machine are taken into account. Results are provided at 2 ft. intervals on the face, left and right walls, floor and roof. To provide a data base for these calculations, eleven 3-D machine models were prepared and the outputs of three luminaire types were measured. Calculations were done for thirty different configurations.

The electron optics, vacuum system, and sample stage assembly for the Bureau of Mines? electron probe X-ray spectrograph were purchased. Four scanning curved-crystal spectrometers, two reflection- and two transmission-type, were designed and constructed by the authors. The reflection spectrometers are placed in a vacuum chamber for measurement of long-wave-length X-radiation. Detection, pulse-amplitude discrimination, and recording circuits are provided for the simultaneous measurement of four X-ray spectral lines. Minimum spot size is approximately 2 microns in diameter at 30 kilovolts and a sample-to-ground current of 5 x 10-8 ampere. At this voltage and current the limit of detection with reflection spectrometers is less than 0.05 weight-percent for most elements. The limit of detection for elements determined by transmission-type spectrometers, evaluated at 35 kilovolts and 5 x 10-8 ampere, is approximately 0.1 weight--percent for all elements having excitation voltages below 20 kilovolts. In general, reflection spectrometers exhibited satisfactory but poorer resolution than the transmission type, resolution of the spectrometers being limited primarily by crystal imperfections, with greater mosaic structure being introduced by the grinding process for the reflection crystals. Several applications of the electron probe X-ray spectrograph are described. Analysis of a uranium-steel is discussed in detail to illustrate calculation of composition from measured X-ray intensities.

The effects of substituting cobalt for nickel on the acid corrosion resistance of two types of austenitic stainless steel were determined. Cobalt substitutions to a maximum 2.2 weight-percent were made in types 302 and 309 stainless steels. Total immersion corrosion tests were made in 10 volume-percent hydrochloric acid, and boiling-acid tests were conducted in 65 weight-percent nitric acid and in undiluted glacial acetic acid. For modified type 309 in acetic acid, corrosion rates decreased for additions greater than 0.57 weight-percent cobalt. Corrosion rates increased as cobalt was increased up to about 1 weight percent for modified type 302 in nitric and hydrochloric acids and for modified type 309 in nitric acid, but these rates decreased with a further increase in cobalt content. A gradual increase in corrosion rates with increasing cobalt content was shown for type 302 in acetic acid and for type 309 in hydrochloric acid. Cobalt substitutions in larger amounts (above a ratio of 8 Ni to 1 Co) may increase the corrosion resistance of the austenitic stainless steels.

The results of two separate but related studies are given. In the first study, four equations were tested; the object was to determine which would produce a curve that would best fit data points that represent a trend of declining oil production in 90 California fields. Two conventional equations (the Arps and semilog) and two novel equations (extreme-c and double semilog) were tested. The curves were first fitted to the initial 9 years of the 15-year production data and then extrapolated for 6 years to determine how well the extrapolated curve would fit the data points. The generated curves were also extrapolated beyond the last data point to predict rates of future production. The results of the first study showed that no equation was clearly superior to the others in all respects. The semilog equation resulted in the best fit to production data for the first 9 years, but the Arps and extreme-c equations produced a better fit for the extrapolated data for the period of 9 to 15 years. The Arps and extreme-c also gave more realistic production rates when extended to the point where cumulative production equaled reserves. A second study was made to determine if the least-squares technique applied to the Arps equation would result in more accurate extrapolations. The merits of the logarithmic and the nonlogarithmic forms of the Arps hyperbolic equation were also tested. For the logarithmic expression, it was found that one of the constants of the Arps equation reached a value so small or so large that the equation was not applicable to the data of 40 of the 90 California fields. The nonlogarithmic form of the Arps equation was applicable to neither the same 40 fields nor to a few additional ones. When the data and the Arps equation were compatible, the use of the least-squares technique as compared with other methods improved the extrapolation accuracy somewhat.

The natural vertical fracture system in bituminous coalbeds is called cleat. Cleat orientation commonly controls the direction of mining with major development paralleling the face cleat. Previous researchers have categorized the origin of cleat as endogenetic, relating the origin of cleat to compaction and coalification, and exogenetic, relating the origin of cleat to tectonic forces. In the coalbeds studied for this report it was found that tectonic forces were the controlling factor of cleat formation. Face cleats were formed as extension fractures during structural deformation, and butt cleats, as release fractures during erosion and uplift. The face cleat of the Pittsburgh coalbed rotates from N 80° W in north-western West Virginia to N 57° W in southwestern Pennsylvania; the face cleat maintains a perpendicular orientation to the shifting axial trend of local structures. Cleat orientation in other bituminous coalbeds in Virginia, Utah, Oklahoma, and Central Pennsylvania showed a similar relationship to local structure. Directional permeability of coal is directly related to cleat. Holes drilled perpendicular to the face cleat yield from 2.5 to 10 times the amount of gas released as compared with holes drilled perpendicular to the butt cleat.

Physiol. 256 (Cell Physiol. 25): C405-C412, 1989.-A kinetic model was developed to describe the production of superoxide (02) by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). Model predictions were compared with experimental results obtained from single rat PAM. The 02 was quantified by measuring the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH,) from video-recorded images of individual cells. The kinetic model considered three reactions: 1 ) the production of extracellular 02 from the reduction of oxygen by NADPH oxidase using intracellular NADPH as the substrate, 2) the subsequent dismutation of 02 to form H,O,, and 3) the reaction of 02 and NBT to form diformazan. NBT specificity for 02 was analyzed by comparing results in the presence and absence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) that catalyzes the dismutation of 02 to H,O,. Measured PAM heterogeneity was accounted for by varying the concentration of intracellular NADPH, its rate of depletion, and the concentration of intracellular NADPH oxidase in the kinetic model. Model predictions compared favorably with experimental results except when SOD was present. This discrepancy may be due to diffusional limitations because NBT is a relatively small molecule (818 mo! wt) compared with SOD (34,000 mol wt). In addition, the cell surface is both ruffled and negatively charged, which may introduce steric hindrances and/ or electrostatic effects, since SOD is also negatively charged, whereas NBT is positively charged.PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria. This process is accompanied by the production of superoxide anion (02) at the surface of the plasma membrane (3, 31). Superoxide readily dismutates to form H20 2 and subsequently, other oxygen metabolites which have been shown to be both antibacterial and cytotoxic (21, 25, 35).Superoxide is produced from the reduction of extracellular O, at the surface of the cell membrane by NADPH oxidase by the following reaction (3, 4)"

Fourteen coal samples representing the Flag , Fire Clay , Whitesburg , Amburgy , Upper Elkhorn No. 3 , Upper Elkhorn No. 2 , Upper Elkhorn No. 1 , and Lower Elkhorn beds in Letcher County , Ky . , were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines - American Gas Association ( BM- AGA ) method , and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined . The samples tested were high- volatile A bituminous in rank , with dry , mineral - matter- free fixed - carbon contents ranging from 55.3 to 62.2 percent . Five of the samples , as received , were chemically unsuitable for metallurgical use because of excessive ash and/ or sulfur content . Generally , strength indexes of the cokes were low and all of the coals would require blending with higher rank coal to obtain satisfactory blast furnace fuel .

The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1937 , but the total capacity to process crude oil continued to increase . These facts were ascertained in the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1 , 1938 . Several important changes were made in the census questionnaire for January 1 , 1938 . First , the basis of reckoning cracking capacity was changed from cracking stock charged to cracked gasoline produced . Although this is a definite improvement , in that it is no longer necessary to consider the yield , it is unfortunate that the data for January 1 , 1938 cannot be compared with cracking - capacity statistics since 1925. Other changes or additions included separating capacity at operating plants into that actually operating and that closed down ; collecting data on capacity added or retired during the previous year ; breaking down idle capacity according to physical status ; and separating new capacity into that built for replacement and that built to augment existing capacity . Prior to January 1 , 1938 , the total capacity of an operating plant was listed as " operating " even though some stills might have been closed down ; furthermore , the only capacity reported as being under construction was that of new plants that were being built on January 1. To make the statistics clear , the totals for the United States as of January 1 , 1938 , are given on both the old and the new bases . On January 1 , 1938 , there were 551 completed plants compared with 572 the previous year . Ten new plants were under construction on that date compared with 11 the year before . The greatest number of completed plants recorded was 632 on January 1 , 1936 ; since then , competitive conditions , particularly in the East Texas field , have been instrumental in reducing the number of small independent plants . The total crude- oil capacity of the completed refineries on January 1 , 1938 , was 4,351,151 barrels , of which 3,970 , 196 barrels ( 91 percent ) represented the capacity in actual operation and 380,955 barrels ( 9 percent ) was shut down . The " shut -down " capacity ( 199,875 barrels on the old basis ) was the lowest since pre- depression days , chiefly because numerous idle East Texas plants were removed from the list . The new method of compiling the statistics sheds considerable light on excess crudeoil capacity , which has been the subject of considerable speculation in recent years . The highest daily average crude runs to stills reached in this country was about 3,460,000 barrels in September 1937. At that time , the total crude - oil capacity was about 3,925,000 barrels . The Bureau of Mines extended its investigation of methanation catalysts. The noble metals (platinum, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium) and rhenium), molybdenum, and tungsten were tested in hydrogenations of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide at 21 atmospheres in a temperature range between 200° and 600° C. From the 8 metals studied) 25 catalysts represent 5 catalyst types were prepared and tested. The impregnated 0.5-percent-ruthenium catalyst proved to be the most active and versatile of all the catalysts produced. Tungsten and the noble metals other than ruthenium were low in activity and usually required temperatures above 500° C for appreciable production of hydrocarbons. Molybdenum was moderate in activity, but further improvement in molybdenum catalysts seems possible.

Recent experiments used catalysts of plate assemblies in synthesizing high-Btu gas and gasoline indirectly from coal. A gas with a heating value of 925 to 943 Bt-: per cubic foot has been prod u la the hot-gas-recycle pilot plant from synthesis gas (3H2+100) with lathe turnings used as catalyst in the first reactor, and assemblies of parallel sprayed plats of nickel in the second. Solid plates made of Raney nickel, and steel and aluminum plates sprayed with Raney nickel or nickel oxide were tested. Those catalysts had very low resistance to gas flow; 90 percent lower than nickel granules used in previous experiments. In a single stage of synthesis thee nickel plates were only partially successful. Although the heating values of the product gas ranged from 856 to 941 Btu per cubic foot, the carbon monoxide content of he gas was above 0.1 percent. Both steel and wrought turnings were tested in single-stage synthesis, but the conversion of hydrogen and carbon monoxide was too low to attain the desired heating value of 900 Btu per cubic foot in the product gas. Assemblies of plates thermally sprayed with fusel iron were tried in an experiment to make gasoline. A gasoline yield of 52 percent (of the hydro¬carbons produced) was obtained using a 1H2-10O feed These sprayed assemblies were in service for 1,500 hours, the longest that this type of catalyst has been used. When a second reactor containing Raney nickel catalyst was added in series with the first reactor, complete utilization of the feed gas was obtained because in addition to the liquid product, a high-Btu gas with a heating value of 800 Btu per cubic foot was made.

This Bureau of Mines report tabulates methane emissions from U.S. bituminous coal mines with daily emission rates of at least 100,000 cfd according to States, counties, and coalbeds. Most of the methane emitted is from mines in the Appalachian States. Total daily emission in 1975 was 216.3 MMcfd, compared with 227.0 MMcfd in 1971 and 214.5 MMcfd in 1973. Thirty counties in nine States hid daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. These emitted 93 percent of the total methane. The highest emissions were from Monongalia County, W. Va., which accounted for 18.9 percent of the total. This was followed by Marion County, W. Va., 9.6 percent; Buchanan County, Va., 8.3 percent; Jefferson County, Ala., 6.1 percent; and Washington County, Pa., 5.9 percent. The Pittsburgh coalbed emitted 45.7 percent of the total methane, followed by the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed with 12.9 percent. The report lists 196 mines, of which 60 had daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. Included in this compilation are the identification and thickness of the coalbed, methane emission, coal production and ventilation rates, number of drifts, shafts, and slopes used for ventilation purposes, shaft depth, age of mine, and gas-to-coal ratio.

One objective of Bureau of Mines recycling research is to devise technology that enables recovery of metals and minerals from wastes. From October 1982 through September 1985, researchers at the Bureau and at the University of Missouri Rolla (contract H0222002) investigated the use of nonferrous flue dust with varying Zn contents (11 to 66 pct) as a source of Zn for electrogalvanizing steel wire. The waste dusts used were from a secondary Cu smelter, a brass smelter, a Pb smelter, and a water treatment plant. The dusts were leached in H2S04, and the leach solutions were treated to make electrolyte for electrogalvanizing steel wire using soluble Zn anodes. Cyclic voltammetry was used in an inno-vative method to evaluate the quality of the electrolytes used for elec-rogalvanizing. After electrogalvanizing, the wire was drawn on a labo-ratory draw bench to simulate industrial practice. Corrosion resistance was measured by a number of electrochemical techniques and by the stan-dard ASTM salt-spray tests. After successful bench-scale tests, the process was demonstrated in an industrial pilot plant. Results indicate that nonferrous flue dusts can be used as a source of Zn for electro-galvanizing if certain impurities are either partially or completely removed from the starting electrolyte.

"INTRODUCTION This report gives preliminary results of field and laboratory investigations made at the request of the War Production Board relative to causes that have occurred during the last 8 months in acetylene-generat72,r plants in shipyards on the Pacific coast.Six acetylene-generator explosions have occurred in four shipyards. These explosions killed five operators, injured six others, and extensive damage to the plants involved and curtailmnent of vital defense Although the occurrence of acetyiene-generator explosions in other section of the United States is not known, it appears, at least, that if such have occurred, they have caused only minor damage and no loss of lives.The use of acetylene in shipyards on the west coast has expanded tremendously during the past 2 years. These shipbuilding, companies erected aletylene-generatcr equipment, which was soon found to be entirely inadequate to meet the needs of their expanding acetylene requirements for welding, cutting, shrinking, and other purposes, and instances found it necessary to operate their equipment at rates greater than deemed consistent with safe operating practice."

This paper is one of a buries being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs at various mines in the United States, and is a description of the mining practice at Ajo, Ariz., where the New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation mines copper ore from an open pit, and operates a concentrator for the treatment of the ore thus mined. Laboratory and pilot-plant tests of spodumene-beryl pegmatites of the Kings Mountain, N. C., area resulted in development of a new and improved method by the Bureau of Mines for separating and recovering spodumene, mica, and beryl. The process was successfully applied to other domestic pegmatites and a spodumene flotation-plant tailing containing about 0.5 percent beryl. The method comprised soap flotation of the spodumene, using combinations of sodium fluoride and lignin sulfonate as conditioning agents to recover 80 to 85 percent of the contained lithia in concentrates assaying over 6 percent Li20. About 80 percent or more of the beryl was retarded in the spodumene tailing. The beryl subsequently was activated, floated, and cleaned in a secondary circuit to yield beryl concentrates containing 6 to 7 percent BeO. The tests also demonstrated that a good recovery of high-grade mica could be produced.

Proceed southeast along State Route 634 about three-quarters of a mile, at which point an old longing road turns north along a ridge and leads to the marl outcrops about one-half mile distant. The Philbates property lies three-quarters of a mile farther west along State Route 33 from the junction with State Route 634. The property lies north of State Route 33 and east of State Route 623 (fig. 1). The marl deposits are on the north end of the farm. The Chesapeake Corp. tract comprises 174 acres and the Philbato property 58 acres."

Water classification and heavy-media sink-float methods were investigated for concentrating metallic junk automobile shredder rejects initially upgraded to about 75-percent metal content in an air elutriation system. An 8-inch-diameter water elutriation column with a feed capacity of 2.7 tons per hour was constructed and operated. The results obtained were compared with those produced by sink-float methods. Tests made on duplicate samples of an intermediate-grade metal product were successful in upgrading the metal con-tent from 75 percent to 98.7 and 99.1 percent with respective recoveries of 95.5 and 98.9 percent for the water classification and sink-float procedures. Tentative flowsheets for treating junk auto shredder rejects are outlined.

The purposes of this Bureau of Mines report are to review the history of the domestic offshore hydrocarbon production; to project offshore oil and lease condensate production from 1971 through 1985; and to show the impact of offshore development on the onshore segment of the petroleum industry. Since 1954, offshore production has provided an increasingly larger portion of the domestic oil production. Domestic offshore oil and lease condensate production has increased from about 2.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 16.7 pct in 1970. Likewise, marketed gas production has increased from 1.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 15.0 pct in 1970. The past performance of exploration, leasing, development, and production of the offshore petroleum industry was used to make projections of offshore oil production. A comparison between onshore and offshore operations was also made. Assuming a tentative Department of the Interior offshore leasing schedule is completed by 1980, the authors estimate that by 1985, about 30 pct of domestic crude oil and lease condensate production from the lower 48 States will come from offshore areas. Currently, leasing of Federal offshore areas has been delayed due to environmental considerations. The rate at which off-shore hydrocarbons will enter the energy market will depend, to a large extent, on how soon environmental considerations are resolved. Assuming that offshore leasing will resume in the near future, U.S. offshore production of crude oil and lease condensate should be about 934 million barrels in 1985.
