Scrap iron is partially oxidized at elevated temperatures in the selective oxidation process to produce iron oxide and a dense residual metal of high purity. Investigation of the process was confined to converting automobile hulks into useful products. In one test series, compressed, sheared automobile scrap was processed at 1,000° C in a 36-foot-long rotary kiln at feed rates ranging from 300 to 1,200 lb/hr. Less fuel was required to maintain the temperature at the higher feed rates because of the heat generated from the burning of the combustibles and the oxidation of the iron. The bulk density of the residual metal exceeded 75 pounds per cubic foot. In an attempt to lower the quantity of contaminants in the residual metal, another test was designed using automobile hulks which had been prepared by ripping, a low-cost method of scrap fragmentation. Before oxidizing the ripped scrap approximately 62 percent of the total copper was removed in a tumbling, screening, magnetic separation and hand-sorting system. Cast iron made from the residual metal obtained by selective oxidation contained 0.15 percent copper; iron oxide scale obtained from the kiln averaged 0.13 percent copper. Pellets made from the scale demonstrated compressive strengths necessary for blast furnace reduction; lead and zinc were removed by volatilization when the induration was performed in a reducing atmosphere.

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Board for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine safety stations, and to F. R. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain and other countries in Europe. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine safety testing stations in great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as is the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy atmospheres which through neglect or accident might surround the equipment. The means employed by these countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers in American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. The third of these surveys covers conditions in Germany.

Fifteen alkyl cycloalkyl sulfides and three dicycloalkyl sulfides were synthesized to provide reference compounds in the search for these classes of sulfur compounds in crude oils. In synthesizing sulfides by alkaline alkylation the order in which the reactants were added was shown to determine the yield and purity of the product.

As part of its goal to minimize requirements for mineral commodities through conservation and substitution, the Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop molybdenum as a potential substitute for superalloys containing the strategic and critical materials, nickel, chromium, and cobalt. Since molybdenum requires protection from oxidation at high temperatures, several complex oxides of the spinel and perovskite structure were investigated to determine which possessed the greatest potential for use as oxidation-barrier coatings. Two spinels (MgCr204 and MgA1204) and five perovskites (BaHfO3, YCrO3, NdCrO3, BaZrO3, and LaCrO3) were selected for testing. Various high-temperature prop¬erties that are important for oxidation-resistant coatings were examined, including diffusion rates of oxygen and molybdenum, recession (vaporization) rates, hardness, erosion resistance, sinterability, reactivity with molybdenum, and ease of application. From the evaluation of high-temperature properties, two spinels (MgCr204 and MgA1204) stand above the other oxides as possible coatings for molybdenum. However, laboratory coatings of MgCr204 at 1,360° C (2,480° F) are equivalent or inferior to currently available MoSi2 coatings; laboratory coatings of MgA1204 may be comparable under limited conditions to currently available MoSi2 coatings at the same temperature.

In response to a request from the President, the Department of the Interior joined with other agencies in a comprehensive study of the land and water resources of the New England-New York region. As part of this study, chemical engineers of the Bureau of Mines have visited 1,025 mineral-industries plants to inventory the waterborne wastes of mineral origin, discharged by the mineral industries of the New England-New York region. Four-hundred and sixty-two of these plants disposed their wastes to a public sewer of some type, but waste control remains a problem for moat of them. The 1,025 plants are discussed in main industry groups according to their production: Chemical and allied products. Stone, clay, and glass products. Iron and steel and their products (except machinery). Nonferrous metals and their products. Electrical machinery. Machinery (except electrical). Transportation equipment. Miscellaneous mineral industries.

Aeration in water slurries and controlled drying of manganous hydroxide produced from dithionate leaching of Artillery Peak manganese ores from Arizona were investigated by the Bureau of Mines at its Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev., to determine whether a simple process could be developed for converting this product into a battery-grade manganese dioxide. The properties of manganese dioxide prepared by the thermal decomposition of manganous nitrate were investigated also. Manganese dioxide suitable for use in batteries was not obtained from the dithionate leach product, but some of the factors controlling its oxidation were isolated. Aging of manganous hydroxide was of major importance in retarding its oxidation by aeration. Sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate promoted oxidation by drying. Optimum quantities were about 0.85 mol of sodium hydroxide and 0.2 mol of sodium silicate per mol of manganese, and drying temperatures of 200° C. produced yields of manganese dioxide up to 90 percent of the manganese present. Higher temperatures and concentrations of reagents carried oxidation of manganese beyond its tetravalent state.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has been developing processes for producing synthesis gas directly from coal, oxygen, and superheated steam. An atmospheric-pressure pilot plant was constructed and operated to: 1. Determine the operability of the plant for gasifying coals of different ranks under various operating conditions. Listed in decreasing order of rank, these coals included a Pennsylvania anthracite, a bituminous A coal from the Sewickley bed, West Virginia, and a subbituminous C coal mined in the Lake de Smet region of Wyoming. 2. Determine the effect of varying operating conditions on: (a) Standard cubic feet (std.c.f.) of oxygen and pounds of coal of different rank required to make M std.c.f. of product gas (carbon monoxide plus hydrogen); (b) carbon gasified, percent; (c) exit-gas temperature, degrees F.; and (d) heat loss, B.t.u. per pound coal. 3. Compare the gasification characteristics, indicated in item 2, of coals of different rank: Bituminous A, anthracite, and subbiturninous C. 4. Determine the concentration of dust in the gases produced and the efficiency of dust removal, and investigate the relation between the sulfur content in the coals gasified and the gases produced.

The International Intercalibration and Intercomparison Program (HIP), consisting of several selected laboratories from four countries, held a radon progeny intercomparison measurement at the U.S. Bureau of Mines experimental Twilight Mine on September 12-14, 1988. Grab samples were taken at four different conditions of low and high radon progeny and condensation nuclei concentrations, respectively. The results showed good agreement among all seven participants. The coefficient of variation of all measurements was 4.7%; after minor corrections for flows and some systematic biases, it was reduced to 3.2%.

Data obtained in the Bureau's study of dust explosions of 313 elemental metals , alloys , catalysts , and ores comprising 54 types of material are summarized . Information is given on ignition temperature , spark energy for ignition , minimum explosion concentration , explosion pressure , rate of pressure rise , and in some instances , the admixed inert dust and oxygen concentration in an atmosphere required to prevent ignition of dust dispersions . The effects of particle diameter on explosibility and pyrophoricity are also discussed .

(D) Selected injury data: Tables 21-30: Current data on various selected factors of operating conditions at different kinds of quarries, including employment size-groups, length of shifts, comparative severity of injuries, and injury data and related employment experience at dimension-stone and nondimension-stone quarries and at underground quarries. (E) Historical injury experience: Table 31: Injury and employment data on the quarrying industry for 1911 through 1957. Statistical data on injuries and related employment in the quarrying industries have been collected annually from the operating companies since 1911. Reporting to the Bureau of Mines is voluntary; there is no Federal law compelling operators of quarries and related plants to supply such data. Data presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry. They are however, believed to be representative of the hazards common to all quarry and related workers. In most oil fields, natural gas is the major source of energy causing flow of oil to the well. The amount of gas produced with the oil generally exceeds actual energy requirements, so that in time the gas reserve of the field becomes seriously depleted and the oil production must be stimulated by some auxiliary means. One of these is to repressure the oil formation with natural gas; or, where a as supply is not available, often air is used. Although air is a cheap and convenient repressuring medium, its use sometimes is attended with several disadvantages. First, the return air-gas mixture decreases rapidly in fuel value, often until it can be used no longer as a source of power. At the same time, explosive mixtures may result if recycling is used, causing hazards to life and equipment. Second, sortie fields experience considerable trouble with the formation of emulsions which become increasingly difficult to treat. Although there is no definite proof that air repressuring always causes these emulsions, many operators are convinced that this is the case. The Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., has been interested in problems connected with air-repressuring for a number of years. Some time was spent in studying the so-called "bad gas"--return mixture of low fuel value. However, it appeared impossible to attack the problem successfully from this angle, and an approach was made through a laboratory-scale study of direct oxidation of crude oil.

Consumption of Diesel fuel oil in the United States has increased very rapidly during recent years. At the present time approximately 5 percent of the crude oil refined in this country is said to be processed for this purpose. This figure represents approximately 20 percent of the total distillate-type fuel oils now being produced in the United States. One factor contributing greatly to the recent increase in consumption of Diesel fuel oil has been the conversion from steam locomotives to Diesel engines by a number of railroads. Other contributing factors are greFl.ter use of Diesel engine8 in buses, trucks, tractors, water craft, and stationary power plants. The growing importance of Diesel fuel oil has resulted in a need by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers for more information regarding the types and quality of Diesel fuels currently being marketed. To supply this information, the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United states Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, have conducted a survey of Diesel fuel all produced in refineries in this country during 1950. Under the agreements, samples of Diesel fuel oil, representative of actual shipments, were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions issued by the Fuel Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines, and that agency has studied the data and compiled them by groups in comparable form as shown in the tables of this report.

"INTRODUCTIONThe information compiled in this volume initially formed the response by the Generic Mineral Technology Center for -Respirable Dust (GTCRD) to a review of its research and technology transfer programs performed in 1990 by the Advisory Committee on Mining and Mineral Resources Research. This review for each mineral technology research center is accomplished, as required of the Bureau of Mines by the House/Senate Joint Conference Committee, through site visitation to the research institutions of the GTCRD and an in-depth questionnaire. The information provided by that questionnaire becomes an important factor in their recommendations concerning future directions of the program.The site visitations took place during January and February 1991 at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center~ The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, and Michigan Technological University, in addition to an in-mine visit conducted at the Loveridge Mine in West Virginia. The questionnaire was prepared and made available to the Advisory Committee and the Research Council for their review at the GTCRD annual project review meeting in Hershey, Pennsylvania, in April 1991.The comprehensive nature of the questionnaire and the scope of the information contained therein make it an excellent retrospective of the Center. Having a clear vision of where the Center has been and knowing where it is now helps to guide it into the future. It is believed that such a detailed view of the Center's facilities and research program will be of value to Center personnel and Advisory Committee members. Each aspect of the questionnaire was examined, answered in detail and documented thoroughly. With the completed questionnaire as a guide, this review of the Center's activities provides an update to Respirable Dust Center Research Program Review 1988, published in 1989 as the seventh of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust volumes. As does that volume, this review presents the complete General Mineral Technology Center questionnaire, with the GTCRD's expanded responses and supporting documentation appended. An examination of the research program, Center personnel currently active on GMTC projects, the number of graduate degrees granted with GMTC supports GMTC publications, the degree of individual interaction, technology transfer activities, the reference center, GMTC equipment and facilities, and envisioned plans for future research directions provides updated information in these areas. In addition, this year, information has been included to demonstrate the interaction between the Center's goals and its research projects, with thorough consideration of actual research needs as specified by the National Academy of Sciences. This volume serves as a review of the years 1989 through 1990, the sixth and seventh years of the Center's operation."

Three long horizontal holes were drilled from a directionally drilled surface hole at the Emerald Mine near Waynesburg, Pa. The purpose was to adapt the technique of directional drilling for use in draining methane from coalbeds. A 504-m (1,652-ft) long, 76-mm (3-in) diameter, circular arc pilot hole was drilled, using a downhole mud motor, to enter the Pittsburgh coalbed at a vertical depth of 305 m (1,000 ft). The hole was reamed to 222 mm (8-3/4 in) and was cased to a measured depth of 486 m (1,595 ft). Three 76-mm (3-in) diameter horizontal drainage holes were then drilled, totaling 2,909 m (9,544 ft) of horizontal hole. Improvements in drilling methods increased the average drilling rate from 20.4 ill (67 ft) to 64.9 m (213 ft) per day. The cost of drilling the directional and horizontal holes (using a Government-owned drill rig) was $1,169,530, a figure inflated by inexperience and by delays caused by lost-circulation problems and fishing operations. An estimated total drilling cost of $960,000 (including rental of a drill rig) for an improved system, was determined by a detailed cost analysis. Initial gas and water production from November 1979 through May 1980 was low because of caving of the horizontal holes drilled in shale near the bottom of the casing.

The number of major coal-mine explosions occurring annually in the United States is decreasing, due mainly to fuller recognition of explosion hazards in coal mines and knowledge of methods to prevent them, which can be attributed largely to the dissemination of information by the United States Bureau of Mines, State departments of mines, and other coal-mining agencies. Conditions vary considerably from one coal field to another; consequently, outstanding causes of and methods of combatting explosions vary, also. The Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines is making a critical study of coal-mine explosions in the various coal-mining States, and an analysis of the results is published as each study is finished. It is believed that, with completion of the series enough information will be at hand which, if applied, will prevent all coal-mine explosions. Based on previous Bureau of Mines research indicating that improved high-temperature properties could be achieved for periclase refractories through chemical additions, the Bureau investigated the properties of full-size bricks produced from chemically modified periclase refractory grains and the suitability of making such chemical additions to Mg(OH)2 slurries prior to production of the periclase grains. In full-size brick testing, strength values, both hot and cold, for the optimized bricks were superior to those for a commercial 98-wt-pct-MgO refractory. The best results were obtained for a natural magnesite with an adjusted CaO:Si02 (C:S) ratio of 3.0 and a 1.0-wt-pct addition of Zr02 and for a seawater periclase with an adjusted C:S ratio of 2.5 and a 0.5-wt-pct addition of Mn02. For samples produced from chemically modified Mg(OH)2 slurries, additions of both Mn02 and Zr02 and an increase in C:S ratios produced significant increases in hot flexural strength, similar to those resulting from chemical additions made to periclase grains. The most effective modifications were additions of Mn02 to brine-derived periclases having a C:S ratio adjusted to 3.0. These results on chemically modified magnesia refractories indicate that such material could potentially substitute for magnesiachrome refractories containing imported chromite.

The objective of this research was separation of one highly conductive mineral from a second conductive mineral , a procedure which is impractical in commercial electrostatic separators using metal rolls . Such separators permit separation of nonconductive from conductive minerals . A new technique involved use of carrier electrode rolls specially prepared by anodizing and / or oxidizing at high temperatures to form suitable oxide surfaces . Specific oxides included aluminum , copper , and nickel . The significant result provided by the new surfaces was the extension of the separation range to higher conductivities , an extension in relative mineral conductivity from 10-14 mhos . The results are in accordance with the blocking- layer theory .

NOISE REDUCTION ACHIEVED BY THE ENCLOSURES WAS SUFPICIENT TO PERMIT REDUCTION OF CRUSHER ROOM NOISE TO 90 DBA, PROVIDED THAT OTHER SOURCES ARE APPROPRIATELY TREATED AND ACOUSTICAL ABSORPTION IS PROVIDED IN THE CRUSHER ROOM. SECONDARY CRUSHER NOISE WAS REDUCED 10 TO 15 DBA BY THE ENCLOSURES.
