As part of a Bureau of Mines survey of radioactive waste disposal , a laboratory investigation was made to study such problems in carbonate leaching mills . Because uranium concentrators employing carbonate leaching with caustic precipitation normally recycle barren solutions to the washing circuit , the disposal of liquid radioactive wastes is automatically controlled . However , it was deemed important to determine the actual radium 226 concentrations occurring in this type of milling so that the survey of the entire industry would be complete . The laboratory procedure consisted of leaching the ground ore at 85 ° to 90 ° C and 50 pct solids for 6 hours in a sodium carbonate - sodium bicarbonate solution . The pulp was filtered to obtain a pregnant solution that was reacted with sodium hydroxide to precipitate the uranium as sodium diuranate . Regeneration of the barren solution was accomplished by gassing with carbon dioxide . The solution then was reused by advancing the solution through the washing to the leaching operations . The radioactivity in the pregnant solution was unusually high , averaging 6,500 disintegrations per minute ( dpm ) of radium 226 per liter . However , over 95 pct of the radium was precipitated with the uranium . Consequently , no buildup of radium occurred upon reuse of the barren solutions for washing .

The mineral value in the ores from the Mother Lode mining districts of California is almost entirely gold, Although many mines have produced extremely high-grade ore the usual mill grade averages approximately $7.00 gold per ton. Fully 80 per cent of the gold has been and is now being recovered by amalgamation. Various methods have been introduced to recover the gold that was not obtained by the amalgamation processes. They include vari¬ous kinds of gravity concentration which in some cases were followed by chlorination or cyanidation. The usual practice includes only stamp battery, plate-amalgamation, and vanner concentration. In the very early practice the tails were run to waste through the main drainage streams of the different mining districts. During later years very large storage dumps have been impounded. These old tails, together with those being saved from present mills, furnish the problem discussed in this article. The clean sand portion of these mill tails is amenable to the usual cyanidation. The slime portion contains the major amount of the gold lost, but it also contains 1-1/2 to 3 per cent carbon, which precludes direct cyanidation of this part of these low-grade waste tails. The black carbonaceous slime portion is the particular problem considered in this report.

"INTRODUCTION The operation of internal-combustion engines at high altitudes and the general aspects of combustion processes in rarefied atmospheres have created considerable interest in the problem of ignition and flame propagation at low pressures. Nuckolls, Matson, and Dufour 4/ have published results on the effect of low pressures on the propagation of flame in gasoline vapor-air mixtures in vessels of large capacity. The volumes of their test equipment varied in capacity from 0.425 to 125 cubic feet. Various sources of ignition were employed. These authors found that the explosive range of gasoline vapor in air decreases with decreasing pressure at pressures considerably below atmospheric, until a limiting absolute pressure of about 33 mm. mercury at ordinary temperature is reached, at which point no appreciable flame is propagated.Experiments carried out at the Bureau with natural gas-air mixtures at reduced pressures have shown 5/ that the limits of inflammability are but little affected at reduced pressures down to 175 mm. mercury. As the pressures of natural gas-air mixtures are reduced below atmospheric, the mixtures become more difficult to ignite; however, if a suitable source of ignition is employed, the limits of inflammability are as wide at 175 mm. mercury absolute pressure as they are at atmospheric pressure. In view of these observations with natural gas-air mixtures, it appears important to investigate gasoline vapor-air mixtures for possible similar behavior. For this reason the tests herein described were carried-out."

The Rush Creek district of Marion County, Ark., has had a more or less continuous record of zinc production over the past 40 years. The ore has come from many small mines working on oxidized and semi-oxidized deposits found in the Everton formation where that formation forms the present surface rock. Prospecting has been restricted to the hillsides above the creek levels, the actual ore outcrops being the guides. Little attention has been paid the possible sulfide zones. In August 1942, the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines recommended exploration of the Powell and Cotter formations, which underlie the Everton, for which purpose the Survey had previously located 18 proposed drill-hole sites in geological structures that seemed favorable to are deposition.

The effect of a water-repellent film in sandstone cores on the effective permeability-saturation relationship was investigated as part of a cooperative research program between the Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association. The repellent film was formed by the reaction of methyltrichlorosilane3 with the connate water in the core. Other researchers have reported on the use of silicone chemicals to alter the flow characteristics of porous media (1-3, 5-7, 9, 10).4 The previous studies, however, dealt almost entirely with oil-water or oil-gas systems and not with water-gas systems. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of using silane to retard the influx of water into natural-gas storage wells and to determine the necessary requirements for achieving this result. The success or failure of silane treatment as a remedial measure depends on its effect on gas-production rate and attendant water production.

The solubility of UO2 was determined at 1,250° C. in ternary melts of UF4 and BaF2 with CaF2, LiF, and SrF2. The solubility of Ce02 was measured at 800° and 850° C. in a solution of CeF3, BaF2, and LiF. The amount of La203 which dissolves at 950° C. in a binary mixture of LiF and LaF3 and a ternary of LiF, LaF3, and BaF2 was also measured. In each case, the amount of soluble oxide was mound to be less than 5 weight-percent. A procedure was developed for filtering fused, oxide-saturated fluoride melts in order to obtain a representative sample for chemical analysis. The oxide content of the samples was determined by an inert-gas fusion procedure.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and pilot plant flotation tests to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica from a California micaceous schist. Best results in the laboratory batch tests were obtained using sodium carbonate and sodium silicate for pH control and quartz depression, and a combination of fatty acid and cationic reagents as the mica collector. In continuous pilot plant flotation tests, an alkaline fatty acid-cationic method recovered about 70 percent of the mica in a concentrate analyzing 95.6 percent mica.

One of the important problems in metal mining , tunneling or quarrying is the most economical method of bringing down the ore or rock . The two factors having great influence in determining this are arilling and blasting costs . In considering the efficiency of the explosive used , the diameter of cartridge has always been supposed to play an important part . However , the Bureau's attention has been called to the lack of definite data on the effect of cartridge diameter on the strength and sensitiveness of high explosives . This information is especially valuable to the user of explosives as it assists him to determine what diameter of borehole is most economical . A paper* on "The effect of cartridge diameter on the strength and quickness of high explosives " was submitted to the sub- committee on Drills and Drill Steel of the 24th Annual Convention of the American Mining Congress by Charles S. Hurter , Technical Representative of the E. I. duPont deNemours and Co. In this paper Mr. Hurter points out that the physical characteristics of an explosive most affected by the diameter of cartridge are rate of detonation and sensitiveness to explosion by influence , and that both increase with increase in diameter . As there is a continuing tendency to the use of smaller diameter drill holes in order to lower drilling costs , and as the smaller drill hole requires a smaller diameter of explosive cartridge than larger drill holes do , this paper has been prepared to show the effect the diameter of cartridge will have on the strength and sensitiveness of the high explosives which may be used . Accordingly , the Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the Institute of Makers of Explosives , has carried out a series of tests to show the effect of cartridge diameter on the strength and sensitiveness of certain high explosives .

The Bureau of Mines has developed and constructed an apparatus that is capable of measuring concentrations of high-molecular-weight polymers in solution at 10 ppm and less. A means for determining low concentrations of polymeric solutions was devised that was independent of slight fluctuations in solvent quality in order to measure polymers in effluent prior to recycling of the recovered solution. The concentrations of polymers ore related to a measured pressure drop observed during turbulent flow of the solution. Low concentrations of polymers of ethylene oxide and acrylamide (frequently used as flocculants for clay waste systems) in aqueous and salt solutions have been successfully measured on the apparatus constructed by the Bureau.

"Introduction.Sixty years ago, M. Berthelot found that ethylene could be selectively absorbed from gaseous mixtures by concentrated sulphuric acid, and that the compound formed by the chemical union of the gas and acid was readily decomposed by heating with water, yielding ethyl alcohol. Only within the last few years has there been any attempt to make use of this discovery technically.Bury*, working in England at the Skinningrove Iron Works and on a commercial scale, developed a technical method for converting, the ethylene of coke-oven as into alcohol. With a gas containing less than 3 per cent of ethylene, he obtained a yield of 1.6 gallons of alcohol per ton of coal carbonized.De Loisy** perfected a technical method for treatment of coke-oven as for alcohol. Evidently this work was carried out on a semi-commercial scale. His method is based on the use of catalytic agents for hastening the absorption of ethylene by sulphuric acid. He uses part of the spent acid for drying the gases and pact for the manufacture of ammonium sulphate. Excess acid is reconcentrated by waste heat. Others have worked on the problem, but so far there has been no large recovery of ethylene from coke-oven gases. The chief difficulty seems to lie in the low efficiency (about 50% of methods and tae relatively low concentrations of ethylene in the gases treated. [The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. "Bit wear has been proven to have a significant effect on respirable dust generation in coal cutting system. The mechanism of bit wear can be adhesion, abrasion. oxidation, or diffusion. depending on cutting conditions. This paper presents a portion of an extensive ongoing series of studies to better understand the principles of bit wear and dust generation. Used bits collected from underground coal mines were analyzed to identify the basic principle of bit wear in coal and rock cutting. Distribution of weight loss and conical height loss of worn bits were studied and bit wear was divided into four stages according to weight loss. Utilizing these worn bits, Laboratory experiments have been carried out to study the effects of bit wear on coal cutting system and respirable dust generation. An Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator was use to perform the experiments. Acoustic emission monitoring is applied to study the effect of bit wear on fracture formation and dust generation. INTRODUCTIONContinuous miners were introduced in the 1950’s and became the major equipment in underground coal production. Now the larger production in the coal industry has increased the demand for continuous miners and their use. It is well known that serious dust problem is also introduced with the use of continuous miners, especially with recent increase in productivity. On the other hand, legal restrictions are made ·more strict by the Mine Health & Safety Administration for the respirable dust generated by the continuous miners to prevent coal workers from incidence of pneumoconiosis. The incidence of pneumoconiosis depends on dust concentration, exposure time, and physical properties of dust. Of them, dust concentration is the best parameter for the assessment of the risk of pneumoconiosis. Although a lot of research work has been done to reduce dust concentration substantially, some areas are still required further investigation to meet the strict regulations. One of the areas is about bit wear and dust generation. In this area, the principles of bit wear and effect of bit wear on dust generation are major concerns."

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. Time and motion studies were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the hand and machine dismantling of scrapped auto starter motors, generators, and alternators for recovery of copper, aluminum, and iron. The studies showed that an individual with power handtools and convenient access to a hydraulic press, power bandsaw, acetylene torch, and power lathe could, in an 8-hour day, disassemble about 100 starters, or 150 generators, or 30 alternators. The scrap copper yield would be 280, 390, and 45 pounds, respectively, and the iron yield would be about seven times the copper weight. About 100 pounds of aluminum would be obtained from the alternators.

The heats of formation of anhydrous ferric sulfate and anhydrous indium sulfate were determined by solution calorimetry. At 298.15° K the heats of formation from the metal, rhombic sulfur, and oxygen were -615.6 ±O.7 kcal/mole for ferric sulfate and -649.6 ±O.6 kcal/mole for indium sulfate. Heats of decomposition at 298.15° K are given for the reaction that forms metal oxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxygen) and for the reaction that forms the metal oxide and sulfur trioxide.

An investigation was made to provide further information for evaluating columbium- hafnium alloys for use as high - temperature structural materials . The columbium- hafnium system was investigated between 700 ° and 2,400 ° C by melting point , thermal analysis , X - ray diffraction , electrical resistivity , and metallographic techniques . The equilibrium diagram is the beta isomorphous type , with columbium tending to stabilize the beta phase . Addition of 60 atomic percent columbium stabilizes the beta phase at 700 ° C. The allotropic transformation temperature of hafnium is 1,750 ° ± 20 ° C. A minimum melting point occurs near 75 atomic percent hafnium .

The heats of formation of lanthanum sulfate and the enneahydrate are -939.8 ± 3.1 and -1,587.1 ± 3.2 kcal. per mole, respectively. The heat of hydration is -32.5 ± 3.5 kca1. per mole. These values were obtained from heat-of-solution measurements of lanthanum oxide and salts. Low rates of solution precluded more accurate determinations of the thermal data. The heat of formation of the chloride was similarly observed to be -256.18 ± 0.28 kcal per mole. Heats of solution and combustion of lanthanum metal yield mutually concordant results, and earlier discrepancies reported in the literature may be ascribed to impurities.

Although heated circuits frequently have been employed in the conditioning stases of certain flotation processes, particularly the flotation of fluorite, the control of temperature is not generally considered economically feasible for the flotation of coal. This viewpoint, although widely held, can neither be substantiated nor refuted by reference to published data. Some evidence is available, however, that temperature is an important variable in the floatability of coal as well as other minerals. For example, Gayle and Swelley4 found that contact angles for coal and related substances were definitely dependent on temperature. Bailey and Whalan5 showed that changes in pulp temperature may exert a pronounced influence on recoveries of coal in batch flotation tests. The present laboratory-scale investigation was undertaken to obtain information about the effects of changes in pulp temperature on coal flotation recovery and also on the selectivity of separation possible using different reagents. The results indicated that flotation recoveries were markedly affected by temperature variations when certain reagents, particularly simple aliphatic alcohols, were used. For other reagents, particularly kerosine, flotation recoveries were substantially independent of variations in pulp temperature. Release-analysis results indicated that temperature variations did not greatly affect the selectivity of separation possible with the reagents tested.

The placing of much, sometimes practically all, of the burden of the expense of mine accidents on the shoulders of the mine operator by compensation laws, and the fact that the problem of protecting the life end limb of workers is now by public opinion largely if not wholly passed to each industry to solve (and present-day thought strongly supports the justice of both of these propositions), are forcing industrial organizations into accident-prevention. Work. This policy is being adopted not alone to protect the companies; in addition, executives alert to their opportunities and obligations are taking part in this work personally to protect themselves. The functions of industrial executives in accident-prevention work are becoming numerous and complex. Executives who are logical in their reasoning, quickly see that before a company can constantly ask or expect the workers to heed safety suggestions, the company and its officials must "put their house in order" by laying down a concrete, definite safety program. For mines this includes primarily adoption of a to a logical mining method, the installation of safe miming equipment and practice the netting forth in definite form (preferably do a printed pamphlet) of the company's minimum safety requirements, and the organization of its operating officials into an accident-prevention body. After the company has its own affairs so arranged that it can go to its workers with "clear, hands" in promoting a safety program, the real work begins; and this is especially applicable in mining.
