"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the synthesis of advanced ceramics (SiC+AlN, SiAlON, SiC+A1203, and Si3N4+AlN) from natural clays (kaolin, halloysite, or montmorillonite) by an intercalation and heat treatment method. This process includes the steps of refining a clay, intercalating organic chemicals into its layered structure, drying the intercalated mixture, firing the treated structure at certain temperature ranges in controlled atmospheres to form desired compounds, and grinding the loosely agglomerated structure. Focus of this research is to economically process advanced ceramic structures from abundant natural resources. The advanced ceramic phases produced in this simple treatment are homogeneously distributed at the nanostructure level, and may potentially lead to cost effective manufacturing processes. The intercalation of clay was confirmed by X-ray and BET analyses. The evolution of chemical compositions during carbonization reactions and carbothermal reduction was investigated. The characteristics of refined clays and synthesized powders were studied. Advanced ceramic composites/solid solution have been produced from intercalated clays, without the presence of other compounds.

The objective of this investigation was to synthesize and investigate the properties of a high-temperature refractory material based on a combination of boron, silica, and magnesium. A magnesium-thermic reaction was used for the synthesis. X-ray examination of the product indicates that the crystalline portion of the composition is a combination of magnesium borides, magnesium silicate, and magnesium orthoborate. Chemical analysis of a representative sample shows, in weight-percent, boron 17.6, silicon 23.9, magnesium 17.8, and chromium 0.5. The balance is largely oxygen. The composition is resistant to high temperatures under oxidizing conditions and is stable in water, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen. It has a low density (less than 3 grams per cubic centimeter) and a hardness value in the range of quartz. It has a melting point above 1,700° C. and can be hot-pressed to shape in the temperature range between 1,200° and 1,350° C. The properties described in this paper indicate that the material may have some uses as a high-temperature refractory, and because of its boron content it may have some value as a thermal-neutron-absorption material.

This report sterns from a study undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the possibility of reducing filter-cake moisture by applying radiant heat. Suitable laboratory equipment was set up to study the effect of heat, heating time, proximity of the heater to the filter cake, cake thickness, and other variables related to the final filter-cake moisture. A minus-48-mesh coal slurry and application of heat for 60 seconds resulted in filter-cake moistures 5.6 to 13.2 percentage points lower than could be accomplished by filtration alone at 24 inches of Hg for 1-1/4-and 1 1/2-inch cake thickness, respectively. The moisture reduction can be attributed to the combined effect of lower fluid viscosity and evaporation.

"The diesel particulate matter (DPM), a constituent of the diesel engine exhausts, is known to be a potential carcinogen. 1- 3 Consequently, suitable methods to control/eliminate DPM have ·been under investigation in recent years. The DPM can be controlled by using fibrous ceramic traps. However, clogging of traps by DPM requires the impractical periodic trap replacement. Following the recent work by Garner and Dent,4,5 we are investigating the in situ use of microwaves to regenerate the ceramic traps, thereby eliminating the trap replacement step in this process. The use of microwaves instead of conventional heating for trap regeneration has the advantage of selective heating of the DPM instead of the trap, if the trap absorbs insignificant microwave power relative to the DPM. Also, the oxidation characteristics of the DPM are needed to understand fully this regeneration process.The rate of energy absorption P per unit volume of a sample is given byP = wE"" |Eo|2 • (1 )where w is the angular frequency, |E0|2 is the intensity of the microwave radiation, and E” is the imaginary part of the dielectric constant (E = E’ + iE”) . Thus measurements of E11 for DPM and ceramic trap material are needed to determine their capacities for microwave absorption. In this paper, we report these measurements carried out at · a frequency of 8.7 GHz. Following microwave absorption, the DPM is expected to oxidize. The oxidation characteristics of the DPM have been investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of the evolved gases CO2 and CO and using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Finally, some information on the structure of carbon in DPM has emerged from the analysis of its x-ray diffraction spectra. Results of these experiments are reported in the following pages."

A previous report4 has explained that pipe lines for the transmission of natural gas should be buried to minimize temperature fluctuations because when excessive the latter decrease accuracy in measuring gas volume and increase leakage of gas due to expansion and contraction in the pipe joints. These effects are governed by the rapidity of the temperature fluctuations and by the total variation over a period of time. The temperature of gas flowing through a pipe line depends to a large extent, upon the temperature of the ground adjacent to the pipe; hence, fluctuation of the ground temperatures at various depths determines the economic depth at which pipe lines should be buried. Scope and Purpose of Report This report covers a record of the daily atmospheric temperature fluctuations at Bartlesville, Okla., for 12 months and a-similar concurrent record of the temperature variation 1, 2, 3, and 4 feet below the surface of the ground.

The Bureau of Mines conducted small-scale batch and semicontinuous tests on the reduction of zinc sulfide with iron according to the reaction ZnS + Fe ? FeS + Zn to determine reaction kinetics in the temperature range 1,000° to 1,400° C and to investigate the potential use of a scrap iron reductant. Batch tests indicated that a temperature of at least 1,300° C with a 1:1 mole ratio of Fe to ZnS is needed for good zinc recovery. Semicontinuous tests were conducted, using four zinc concentrate samples, containing various percentages of copper, cadmium, and lead, which were reacted with iron and iron contaminated with iron oxide and tin in an externally heated graphite furnace. Analysis of the zinc metal and FeS matte reaction products showed cadmium to be entirely in the zinc metal, copper to be in the FeS matte, and lead to be about 60 pct in the zinc metal and 40 pct in the matte. Tin reported to the matte, and none was detected above the O.OS-pct level in the zinc. Sulfur dioxide was not detected in the offgas when up to 20 pct of the iron was replaced by Fe203.

Previous studies at the Bureau of Mines have shown that broad-line nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques have potential applications for rapid evaluation of oil-shale deposits. In a continuation of this study the techniques of pulsed NMR have been applied in a similar manner. The basis for the pulsed NMR oil-shale assay method lies in the assumption that the free induction decay (FID) amplitude following a 90° pulse is proportional to the potential oil yield. This assumption was tested on two groups of oil-shale samples, numbering 141 and 263 samples, from two different oil-shale cores. For both groups of samples a small number were selected as calibration samples. Free induction decay amplitude measurements were made on the 141 and 263 samples. The best least-squares regression line was obtained for the calibration samples, and the oil yields of the remaining samples were calculated using the slopes and intercepts obtained in the regression analyses. The agreement between measured and calculated oil yields was good, the indexes of determination being 0.93 and 0.89 for the groups of 141 and 263 samples, respectively.

A parachute-type stopping intended for changing the course of mine ventilation air during mine emergencies has been designed and tested. Some production uses are also visualized for metal mines. Preliminary tests in the laboratory and underground indicate that the parachute stopping is a workable concept, but further developmental research is required.

The Bureau of Mines has developed structural design data for unreinforced concrete tunnel linings for drifts used in block caving stopes. Design data are given that consist of moment, thrust, and deformation coefficients from which bending, axial, boundary stresses, and structural deformations can be determined at any point on the lining. Data is given for circular, horseshoe, and rectangular linings, each with two different thicknesses and subjected to eight different loading conditions for drifts excavated in hard and soft rocks. The structural analyses performed are based on procedures that account for both the structural behavior of the lining and that of the drift and take into consideration deformational interaction that occurs between them.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 47,000-acre Electric Peak study area (part of the formerly-designated RARE II Non-wilderness Recommended Area no. 1609) to evaluate its' identified mineral resources. The study area is in Powell and Jefferson Counties, YT, about 30 mi southwest of Helena and 30 mi north of Butte. Three lode localities within the study area contain an estimated 159,000 tons of identified subeconomic resources containing gold, silver, and accessory lead, copper, and zinc. Resources at those localities range from 10,000 to 134,000 tons with grades ranging from 0.04 to 0.32 oz/ton gold, 0.92 to 16.42 oz/ton silver, 0.14 to 79.65 percent lead, and as much as 0.41 percent copper and 0.68 percent zinc. One property also contains 0.15 percent antimony. Gold, silver, and base-metal content in samples of poorly exposed mineralized structures indicate that further exploration may identify resources on seven additional study area localities.

THIS PAPER describing the quarrying, mining, and crushing of gypsum at the Blue Diamond mine, 11 miles from Arden, Nev., on the Union Pacific Railway, is one of a series on gypsum mining being prepared for and published by the Bureau of Mines. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

In laboratory tests using reconstructed soil columns, rubber latex showed good sealing efficiency when applied at a rate equivalent to 4000-5000 pounds per acre. Results of field testing, however, were inconclusive. The ideal situation in which latex would coagulate in a narrow zone two to three feet below the surface by reacting with acidic or metallic constituents of the soil was not attained. Rather, the latex was deposited progressively as it passed through the soil (most of it remained in the top foot), the rate of deposition being dependent on soil structure and composition as well as on properties of the latex such as particle size and emulsion stability. Latex stability appears to be a more critical property than latex particle size in controlling penetration. Addition of excess anionic or nonionic surfactants to latex improved its penetration into the soil. A styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber latex of 2400 Å average particle size with high mechanical stability gave the best balance of penetrating ability and sealing capacity in laboratory tests and this was confirmed in tests on a 5 x 5 foot test plot at Lanse, Pennsylvania. This latex was subsequently applied to three one-quarter-acre plots at Lanse by sprinkler irrigation, and compared to adjacent areas that were sprinkled with water only. Soil moisture measurements did not enable us to judge the effectiveness of the seal because differences between sampling positions were greater than differences between treated and untreated sections, but permeability tests showed that water flow was much slower (90-99% reduction) within the top ten inches of soil in the latex- treated sections. This sealing effectiveness was reduced after wintering. There was no deleterious effect on the vegetation as a result of sprinkling the areas with latex. A laboratory study conducted in a 5 x 5 x 5 foot box containing uniform reconstructed soil from a New Jersey source suggests that latex penetration into the soil in the field occurs mainly through natural macro openings and not through the capillaries of the soil structure. Dilute solutions of ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (with no latex present) were found to seal effectively in laboratory soil columns as well as in field applications. However, since these chemicals are water soluble, the seal is temporary. Raw material costs of latex at the application rates used in the field testing are in the order of $1000 per acre. The cross-measure borehole technique is being studied by the Bureau of Mines as an alternative to the use of surface gob boreholes as a means of controlling methane in gobs during longwall mining. Small-diameter holes are drilled from underground locations into strata overlying the mined coalbed. When the roof strata are fractured by the mining opera- tion, a partial vacuum applied to the boreholes draws the methane out of the fractured strata and prevents it from entering the mine ventilation system. Tests in the Upper Kittanning Coalbed showed that 50 pct of the methane produced by the longwall mining operation was captured by the cross-measure boreholes. Borehole inclination and penetration into the gob are two important borehole parameters that affect the performance of the cross-measure borehole system.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 144 natural gas samples from 19 States. Of the total samples, 139 were collected during calendar year 1990. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1990. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free-market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

General The underground mining environment has traditionally been hostile and as early mines were developed, coal seams with particularly difficult natural conditions were bypassed in favor of those more easily exploited. Barring the discovery of new and novel sources of energy, the depletion of petroleum and natural gas reserves will eventually force the United States back to the use of coal as its primary energy source. Figure 1 illustrates the trend away from coal which has taken place over the past half century. Today, the demand for coal requires a re-evaluation of all coal seams to meet the needs of the energy market. Difficult mining conditions may result in an increase in the consumption of roof control materials, require greater investment in pumping and ventilation systems, and increase the need for in-depth engineering of far greater safety in production plans. They may also cause delays in mine development and curtail production, all of which combine to drive up the unit production cost. It is reasonable to expect that conditions will continue to deteriorate as current reserves are depleted, thus bringing this factor into greater prominence in the future. For several years now, it has become apparent that in addition to economic objectives, coal companies must set and achieve several concomitant objectives to accomodate society's interest in the conservation of natural resources. Government action to meet this interest has taken the form of two categories of Federal legislation, environmental protection and employee health and safety. This report describes reconnaissance by the Bureau of Mines of titanium-bearing beach sands on Ship Island in the Gulf of Mexico off the south coast of Harrison County, Miss. The purpose was to determine the ilmenite, rutile, and associated heavy-mineral content of black-sand-bearing beach sands. The investigation was part of a survey of titanium resources of the United States. Ilmenite (FeTi03), an iron-titanium oxide, is the major titanium-bearing mineral consumed in the titanium pigment industry. Rutile (TiO2), titanium dioxide, is used mainly as a constituent in welding-rod coatings and in producing titanium metal. The major fieldwork was conducted during the first half of February 1961. Nine holes, totaling 220 feet of bore, from which 110 samples Her taken, were drilled at widely spaced intervals on the island.
