"The author was a member of a Commission sent by the Secretary of the Interior to France to investigate developments in mining and metallurgy under stress of war conditions, and also to observe the extent and character of the destruction of the collieries and the steel and iron plants, and methods which were being taken to reestablish them. This commission consisted of F. G. Cottrell, Chief Metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, Frank H. Probert, Dean of the University of California Mining School, and George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau. While conducting this investigation a trip was made to the Saar Basin to observe the conditions there. Following this Mr. Rice acted as advisor on mining matters to the Representative of the Economic Council in an Interallied conference held at Cologne in April 1919, and subsequently visited the mining districts in central and southern France, Belgium, and Great Britain.The Germans, in planning a campaign for world supremacy, had as one of their first objectives the seizing of the important Briey iron ore deposits of France and the coal fields of Belgium and northern France.Large resources of coal and iron have led to the commercial greatness of the countries possessing them, as exemplified by the great development first in England then in the United States, and in Germany when the minette high phosphorus iron ores became useful through the invention of the Thomas and Gilchrist dephosphorizing process in 1878. However, this development was anticipated by the German scientific advisors in 1871, and led to the then known deposit of minette ore in Lorraine being taken from France by Germany.When these ores became available, Germany made such tremendous strides that its minette ore developments were not sufficient and importation of ore was necessary. Meantime France, by drilling, had established the extension of the minette ore field into French Lorraine. Then it was discovered that France had greater resources, while the German resources were being rapidly depleted.Although Germany, in its Westphalian basin, possessed the most important coal field on the Continent, containing the largest resources in coking coal outside of Great Britain, its coal was distant from the sea coast, so it could not be an important factor in the export business. No doubt this fact caused the German Imperialists to look forward: to securing the coal basin of Belgium and northern France for future ocean trade.It was a striking feature in the German conduct of the war that, although the steel and iron plants of Belgium and France and other industrial establishments in the invaded regions of Belgium and France were utterly destroyed, the iron mines in French Lorraine were not destroyed nor materially damaged by the Germans in their retreat, while the destruction in France continued until the day of the Armistice. The other striking fact is that the coal mines Of Belgium were not destroyed. It can only be conjectured whether this was due to President Wilson's threat of retribution, which did not stay their hand in France, or was due to the fact that they did not consider Belgium as a real competitor. It was evident they wished to cripple France industrially when they could not hold these northern provinces."

In the course of a series of investigations on vanadium deposits of the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected many hundreds of samples for chemical analysis. As uranium is often associated with these vanadium minerals, they were also analyzed for uranium, which was pound to be absent in a large percentage of the samples. Since the usual methods for determining uranium are laborious and time-consuming it is very desirable to have some simple qualitative test that can be applied prior to a quantitative analysis to determine whether uranium is present or absent and thus save the time and expense of applying the quantitative analysis to the large proportion of samples containing no uranium. To be acceptable, the test should be specific for cranium, sensitive enough to detect small amounts of uranium, and. simple enough to make it worthwhile to apply. The available methods for detecting uranium lacked one or more of the desired characteristics. Eventually, however, a method was worked out that satisfied all the requirements. This method is probably more specific and sensitive than the usual qualitative methods for uranium, and its simplicity and speed of application make it ideal for testing samples prior to quantitative analysis.

This paper, describing the operations of the Louisville Cement Co. in quarrying limestone for the manufacture of quicklime, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on stone quarries throughout the United States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. In the normal operation of mines, the aggregate effect of many seemingly minor op rations may be very important as respects economy and safety. Anion: these operations is the method employed in coupling and uncoupling mine cars. For economic reasons the equipment in mines has not been protected as well as railroad equipment. It is pertinent that haulage accidents rank second in severity among mine accidents, and that manual coupling of cars has been one of the most frequent causes of such accidents. One study4/ revealed that coupling was responsible for about 20 percent of haulage accidents underground. A review of early conditions on steam railroads, which were responsible for the introduction of safer methods of coupling cars, indicates how conditions in might be improved. THE STORY OF RAILROAD COUPLING As any considerable improvement in mine-car coupling probably will follow lines somewhat similar to those that brought order out of chaos for the railroads, it seems appropriate to review briefly the steps taken to improve railroad coupling from the days of link and pin couplings of various types to the adoption of the standard ?M.C.E? automatic coupler.

Scaling Law for Fly Ash Crater Formation The scaling law derived for predicting crater diameters at different scales is developed below by considering the equation of motion of individual fly ash particles. It is assumed that the air drag on each particle is characterized by Stokes flow, and at the borehole - passage intersection the air velocity and the fly ash particle velocity are the same. The alveolar macrophage (AM) responds to stimuli such as coal mine dust by releasing inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, growth factors. reactive oxygen species. and eicosanoids. Eicosanoids are synthesized by°AM through the action of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes and serve to modulate the proinflammatory function of this cell as part of the lungs' host defense mechanism. Reactive oxygen species can be generated by AM as a by-product in the biosynthetic pathway of the prostaglandins. AM produces primarily prostaglandin E2, thromboxane A2, and leukotriene B4 as part of the cellular response to an inflammatory stimulus. There is evidence to suggest that eicosanoid production by AM is functionally linked to both surface interaction with mine dust particles like silica and by the phagocytosis of the dust particle itself. In this report, we examined the effects of an antioxidant, vitamin E. on dust-induced synthesis of PGE2 and TXB2 in vitro and in vivo by AM obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage from rats. We also looked at the effects of the surface of silica particles on AM eicosanoid biosynthesis under conditions of calcination, a process that removes exposed hydroxyl groups from the surface of silica particles, thus reducing the likelihood of soluble hydroxyl radical formation. Treatment of AM with vitamin E in vivo and in vitro reduced the augmentation in eicosanoid production usually observed when AM are exposed to mine dusts. These results suggest that vitamin E may effectively reduce the inflammatory and fibrotic response produced by inhalation of mineral dust through an antioxidant mechanism. Silica that has been chemically altered by calcination was unable to activate AM eicosanoid production in vitro when compared to untreated, freshly fractured silica. These findings suggest that the mechanism by which dust particles can activate AM eicosanoid release may involve interaction of surface and/or soluble factors with the cell membrane. Taken together, these studies point to the involvement of AM eicosanoid production as part of the proinflammatory response of this cell to occupational inhalation of mineral dust. - Environ Health Perspect 102(Suppl 10):97-100 (1994)

Coal was gasified in the presence of up to 3.57 million roentgens of gamma rays by the Bureau of Mines to determine whether the irradiation increased the gasification rate or yields of methane and hydrogen . High volatile A bituminous coal was gasified with steam at 500 and 1,500 psig and temperatures of 1,400 ° and 1,800 ° F ; five other coals ranging in rank from lignite to anthracite were gasified at 500 psig and 1,800 ° F. The average results of replicate experiments with and without radiation were compared for possible effects of radiation from 40,000 curies of radioactive cobalt . The irradiation had no gross effect on the gasification rate or on the yield and distribution of methane and hydrogen . It was concluded that gammaray irradiation produced no improvement in the technology or economics of coal gasification .

The present article is one of a series which is being prepared by the Southwest Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Department of Mining and Metallurgy, University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz., of papers dealing with factors involved in the leaching of copper ores. A knowledge of the time required to dissolve the various copper minerals present in ores, as well as of the consumption of leaching reagents is very desirable, because with the decrease of the Nation's total tonnage of sulphide ores increasing attention is being given to the recovery of copper by leaching methods from low-grade disseminated ore containing both oxidized and sulphide minerals. As leaching has already been applied with success and profit, this study was undertaken to determine certain fundamental characteristics that are applicable to all ores suitable for leaching.

"Properties and Uses.Iceland spar is a name given to a pure crystallized form of calcite (CaCo3) which is sufficiently transparent and free of defects to be used in the manufacture of optical instruments. While the actual requirements are small, the degree of purity and physical perfection demanded renders it somewhat difficult to obtain suitable material.The properties of value in Iceland spar are its transparency combined with double refraction. It is used in the manufacture of polarizing microscopes, saccharimeters, colorimeters and photometers. Its most important use is in the manufacture of Nicol prisms, which constitute an essential part of every polarizing microscope. The principle governing the construction of the Nicol prism is as follows:Ordinary light in passing through a crystal of calcite is resolved into two rays of plane polarized light vibrating in planes at right angles to each other and having different indices of refraction. Thus the two rays follow different paths through the crystal. The prism of Iceland spar is cut diagonally and cemented together again with a transparent cement having an index of refraction intermediate between the two rays passing through the prism. Canada balsam is employed for this purpose. The prism is cut at such an angle that the ray having the greatest index of refraction meets the surface of the balsam at an angle greater than the angle of total reflection, and it is thus deflected to the side of the prism, while the second ray passes through. Thus one of the rays is eliminated and polarized light vibrating in a single plane is obtained."

The Bureau of Mines has under development on a technical scale an electrolytic process for treating oxidized ores of zinc , using caustic soda as an electrolyte . Whereas the Bureau process can alternately make either solid zinc or zinc dust , the following paper , from the Ludwigshafen research laboratory of the well -known I. G. Farbenindustrie , A. G. , of Germany, deals only with production of zinc dust from sodium zincate solutions and may well serve as introduction to the subject for American metallurgists . The Bureau of Mines pioneered in the idea ; a study on laboratory scale by H. J. Morgan and 0. C. Ralston was made early in the First World War, and published in Transactions of the American Electrochemical Society . The Eckardt paper , translation of which follows , goes more thoroughly into the preparation of electrolytic zinc dust , and later publications of the Bureau of Mines will deal with broader details and application of the idea to treatment of lowgrade ores and metallurgical intermediates , which is the point where Eckardt left off . 4 The Eckardt report became available through operations of Field Information Agency , Technical ( FIAT ) of the Office of Military Government for Germany (US ) , which made bibliofilm copies of the files of internal technical reports of many of the German industrial establishments , Eckardt's report is dated April 1939 and was taken on FIAT Microfilm Reel MM 106 , frames 82-101 , which is on file as Publication Board Document 41411 in Office of Technical Services of the U. S. Department of Commerce , Washington , D, C , Eckardt points out that the normal source of zinc dust is the blue powder of the zinc retorts , which decreases in volume every year owing to technologic improvements in zinc smelting. A goal of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is the advancement of minerals technology through the development of improved metals and minerals processing. In support of this goal, the Bureau of Mines has developed a general method for preparing solutions from a wide range of metal and mineral samples for chemical analysis. The development of the method from current knowledge of vessel material, pressure dissolution techniques, and the fluoride-boric acid reaction is given. The method uses 7 ml of a mixture of HC1-HNO3-HF acids in a ratio of 3.5:2:1.5 sealed in plastic bottles that act as pressure vessels when heated in a boiling water bath. A final volume of 100 ml is obtained by the addition of 93 ml of a 1. 5-pct H3BO3 solution to the bottles, which are reheated; precipitated fluorides as well as sample residue are dissolved by the fluoride-boric acid reaction. A copper slag and a steelmaking slag treated using this method were analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy yielding values for Si, Mg, Ca, AI, Fe, Mn, Na, As, Pb, Sb, and Zn very close to certified values with an average relative standard deviation of 2.13 pct. The low cost, reduction in preparation time, ease and safety of sample handling, conservation of reagents, and ability to dissolve volatile materials without loss make this method superior to traditional wet digestion techniques for many materials, and ideal for use with atomic absorption, and optical emission or X-ray emission spectroscopy.

"Brattice cloth is an important material in coal-mine ventilation practically all coal mines use some brattice cloth, gassy mines a large amount. It is employed in three ways:Crosscut brattices.Curtains in haulageways.Line brattices in gassy mines.In each case brattice cloth is used to deflect part or all of a split of the mine ventilating current into or toward the face of a working place. As a general rule, its use in a particular location is temporary.A crosscut brattice should be employed only until a permanent stopping has been erected. Such a brattice is subject to little wear when in actual service, the chief damage occurring when it is taken down and put up again.When used for curtains on haulageways or haulage crosscuts to deflect the air current up into rooms or headings, the wear on brattice cloth is considerable, as mine cars, machines, and personnel constantly pass under the curtains which last only a few days or a few weeks in an active part of the mine. For such purposes tightly woven smooth cloth is desirable, so that it will not be easily torn. Curtains should not be used back from the working places, as they sometimes are, to deflect the main. split, as the leakage of air is too great. Doors should be used in such places."

This information circular is a revision of I.C. 7238, Danger from Carbon Monoxide in the Home, by L. B. Berger and H. H. Schrenk, issued in April 1943. Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the, dangers of this gas, and frequent news items report the finding of persons dead at unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either these warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that, "It can't happen to me." It can happen to you carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons.

"A New Mica Company in China A report has been received from the American Consulate at Chungking, China, to the affect that a new company has been organized to operate a mica mine north of Ta-chien-lu, in the province of Ssu-Chuan. The company, which is entirely under Chinese management and control, has a working capital of $10,000. While comparatively new, the mine has been worked before, and apparently with some success. The mica is said to be of good quality. It is claimed that the deposit will supply a limited amount of mica that will cut in pieces a foot square or over, and larger quantities of smaller sizes. The chief difficulty is transportation, for it is reported that a ten days' journey, part of it over mountain trails, will be necessary to transport the mica from the mine to Yachow, the nearest practical waterway. It is probable, therefore, that the output of the mine will be limited.Necessity for Careful Trimming and Grading of MicaA recent report to the Department of Trade and Commerce, Ottawa, Canada, by Acting Trade Commissioner C. G. Venus, London, England, contains information which is of vital interest to mica producers in the United States. It is pointed out that mica exports from Canada to England show a gradual decline dur¬ing recent years, the figures being as follows: 1913- 1,383 cwt: 1914 - 1,225 cwt: 1915 - 1,864 cwt: 1S16 - 879 cwt: 1917 444 cwt: 1918 - 480 cwt. Shipments from India to England, on the other hand, show a steady increase from 40,178 cwt. in 1913 to 66,401 cwt, in 1918."

So many subjects are covered in State mine-safety regulations that any attempt to compare different State laws in their entirety would be futile. On the other hand, if one selects a single phase or branch of safety work, such a comparison may prove profitable. The subject selected for study in this paper is limited to legislation or regulations dealing specifically with safeguarding (electric) motored equipment used in gassy mines. T When one reads glowing accounts of the safety activities being carried on here and there it is easy to believe that everything which is right and proper is being done to safeguard the mine.workers; but, when one takes time to look into the weakness of many State regulations, it is evident that there is still room for improvement. Undoubtedly it would have been much better for the safety of mines if electrical equipment had been introduced into mines 50 years earlier. If electricity had been in general use when the first mine regulations were pre- pared, those formulating the rules would have covered this hazard along with other hazards, but as electricity came in at a later period, safe mine legisla- tion regarding it has been woefully neglected. Today the United States in general is far behind most other coal-producing nations in the provision of adequate safety rules or laws for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and wiring. Returning to the subject of our study, approximately 30 of the 48 States mine coal. More than 20 of these States' produce coal in large quantities. How- ever, of the 30 States only four, 3 Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia, have laws which specially call for the use of explosion-proof types

"The US Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota have developed design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for underground coal mines. These are based on the premise that size can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is mostly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. The sampler has three stages: a respirable aerosol preclassifier, a 0.8-um aerodynamic diameter inertial impactor to collect mineral dust and a final filter to collect the diesel aerosol. Using a sample flow rate of 2 L/min and gravimetric analysis to within 0.1 mg, the measure sub-0.8 um diesel aerosol has an a-priori limit of detection of 0.3 mg/m3.A miner working in an underground coal mine with diesel equipment is exposed to a wide array of pollutants from the diesel exhaust. These include CO, CO2. NO, NO2, SO2, diesel exhaust aerosol, and a variety of hydrocarbon compounds. A quantitative definition of the health risk resulting from these exposures remains elusive. During the past several years, though, progress has been made in defining the problem.Results from epidemiological studies by Garshick et al. (1988 ), animal inhalation studies by Mauderly eta). (1986), Iwai et al. (1986), and Brightwell et al. (1986) and in vitro studies by Lewtas et al. (1986) have provided sufficient data for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOSH) to recommend that ""whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a 'potential occupational carcinogen,' as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration"" (NIOSH, 1988). NIOSH further stated that ""though the excess risk of cancer in diesel-exhaust-exposed workers has not been quantitatively estimated, it is logical to assume that reduction in exposure to diesel exhaust in the workplace would reduce the excess risk.""The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has also been directed by an advisory committee to establish a diesel exhaust aerosol standard and to establish regulations to minimize exposure to diesel pollutants in underground coal mines (MSHA,1988). Both reports point out the need for development of measurement techniques for respirable diesel aerosol.In the past four years, the US Bureau of Mines (Cantrell,1987 and Cantrell, et al. 1987), in cooperation with Marple, et al. (1986), at the University of Minnesota's Particle TechnologyLaboratory (PTL), have studied the use of size-selective sampling techniques to measure the mass concentration of diesel aerosol in underground coal mines. Results from these studies have been used to develop design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for use in underground coal mines.These criteria are based on the premise that size-selectivesampling techniques,can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is predominantly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. In addition to the performance criteria, this paper discusses the laboratory and field test data used to develop the criteria."

As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for mineral commodities through conservation and substitution, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the resistance of alumina refractories to corrosion by alkali-containing slags that could result from burning of the abundant Western lignites in metallurgical operations. Static corrosion tests were performed at 1,000° to 1,350° C and dynamic tests were performed at 1,400° to 1,600° C to investigate the stability of refractory specimens in slag environments. In general, the degree of refractory attack increased with decreasing alumina content in the refractory and with increasing alkali content of the lignite ash. The parabolic kinetics observed in static tests suggested that a reaction product layer is formed through which ionic diffusion must occur to sustain the reaction with the refractory material. The linear kinetics observed in dynamic tests in high-viscosity slags indicated a shearing of the reaction product layer by viscous slags. The observed lesser attack of refractories by low-viscosity slags can be explained on this basis. Two 99-percent-alumina refractories and two 90-percent-alumina refractories formed an expanded protective layer with the more viscous slags but not with the less viscous slags. Corrosion of 90-percent-alumina refractories increased exponentially with temperature. In refractories with the same nominal alumina content, those that contain a combination of a-Al203 and mullite (3A1203?2Si02) have better corrosion resistance than those containing a combination of a-Al203, cristobalite (Si02 mineral), and mullite. In alkali environments (1,300 to 1,400° C), 90-to 99-percent-alumina refractories are recommended for use as furnace linings.

The concentration limits of flammability and autoignition temperatures of trichloroethylene in atmospheres of air, oxygen, and nitrogen tetroxide have been determined in a spherical vessel. The autoignition temperatures of TCE in atmospheres of air, oxygen, and nitrogen tetroxide were found to be 419°, 396°, and 221° C, respectively. The flammability zones of TCE-air, TCE-oxygen and TCE-nitrogen tetroxide mixtures at 100° C were found to be 10.5 to 41, 7.5 to 91, and 13.5 to 69 volume percent TCE, respectively. In addition, maxi-mum combustion pressures of 50 ps and 140 were recorded for constant volume combustion of the lower limit mixtures of trichloroethylene in air and oxygen, respectively.

LOCATION, HISTORY, AND GEOLOGY The Hartley-Grantham Mine is located just outside the city limits of Baxter Springs, Kans., as shown in Figure 1. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Avon Mountain trap-rock quarry of the Atlas Sand, Gravel & Stone Co., in West Hartford, Conn.
