Methane is the chief constituent of natural gas, and large quantities of it are also obtained in coke-oven gas and in the off-gases from cracking higher hydrocarbons. Perhaps the most important potential chemical use of methane is in the production of higher hydro- carbons, both aliphatic and aromatic. The results of a relatively large number of researches have been published in the technical and patent literature on the thermal decomposition of methane, the objective being an industrial process for the production of "antiknock" motor fuel. No industrially feasible process has, however, been developed. An inspection of the literature on this subject indicates that the chief difficulty in the way of accomplishing this object lies in controlling the decomposition so that undesirable products are eliminated. A considerable number of quantitative experiments have been reported, the results of which provide only a vague and confusing picture of the various steps in the thermal decomposition of methane. The reaction mechanism has not been subjected to rigorous fundamental study, and the necessity for such a study is obvious if further progress is to be made. The thermal decomposition is only one of the reactions of methane which are of potential industrial importance and which require further fundamental investigation. The oxidation, hydrolysis, and halogenation of methane are other reactions which must be studied further. In view of the importance of methane as a raw material for various industrially desirable products, it is appropriate that a survey be made of the important facts concerning the physical and chemical properties of methane which will serve as an aid in subsequent experi- mental work. No attempt will be made to present a complete chronological review, but rather a condensed critical description of the important literature will be presented.

"The Baboquivari mining district is about 60 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., the present railroad shipping point. The values are silver and gold. The silver is largely associated with the black oxides of manganese. The ore is highly oxidized, and careful panning shows only a very small amount of pyrite. Our sample analyzed as follows:A flotation mill has been installed in the district, but it does not concentrate the precious metals satisfactorily. Our best laboratory flotation results were obtained by grinding to pass 65-mesh and floating with Xanthate or standard flotation oils plus sodium sulphide and polysulphide. This sulphidizing method gave a concentration of 32 per cent of the silver and 80 per cent of the gold, which about equals plant practice.We do not know of an instance where the oxidized forms of manganese have been concentrated satisfactorily by flotation.Plain cyanide on the original ore extracts practically all of the gold but only one-third of the silver. A preliminary deoxidizing roast, using producer gas or powdered coal, gives a calcine from which cyanide dissolves about 90 per cent of the gold and 75 per cent of the silver. This method of treatment, known as the Clevenger-Caron process, is described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 226.Preliminary treatment with sulphur dioxide by burning pyrite or sulphur and passing this gas into the pulp until all of the contained manganese is dissolved or changed in form best prepares the ore for cyanidation. The acid consumption will vary with the percentage of manganese and other soluble constituents. Neither gold or silver is dissolved by this acid treatment. The washed residue gives maximum cyanide dissolution of the gold and silver with minimum loss of cyanide,"

[A calorimetric method3/ for the determination of benzene in amounts as low as 0.001 m has been developed recently at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station by the authors, with the assistance of chemical personnel from the Allegheny County (Pa.) Relief Works Division. The method is based on the direct nitration of either liquid or gas - phase benzene, followed by neutralization, extraction with butanone, and final treatment with sodium hydroxide which produces a violet color. The color is matched with color standards of known values. Although the method is adaptable to many conditions the primary objective was a procedure that would be suitable for hygienic investigations.]

Simple chemical spot tests for the identification of major alloying elements in aluminum-base alloys are described. The tests are suitable for use by nontechnical personnel working outside a laboratory. Tests for zinc, copper, manganese, and magnesium employ electrographic sampling methods and sample papers. Use of electrographic sampling in a test for magnesium in aluminum is made possible by using glass fiber filter paper. Differentiations between magnesium and magnesium-silicon alloys of aluminum and between aluminum-base and magnesium-base alloys are made by direct chemical solution tests. Description of a device for obtaining reliable electrographic samples is included. A sequence of testing for identification by alloy groups is given.

A method is presented for the linear evaluation of adsorption data using the equations dC = Ae-rv dv and v = [jT] - q, where dC is the phase composition increment, v a calculated parameter, T the absolute temperature, and A, r, h, g, and q the constants. The value of v is calculated from the composition C for both the adsorption surface and the immersion phase. A plot of v for each phase on Cartesian coordinates results in straight line graphs. With temperature variation, a plot of v versus,[ ] also results in straight line graphs. The equations are applicable to electronic and salt equilibria.

Digital camera and computer technologies can be used to monitor mine slopes and provide real-time warning of rock falls. NIOSH researchers assembled a surveillance system using low-cost video cameras and computer software from the security industry to test its effectiveness. The system is designed to signal an alarm when motion is detected and to record images of the scene. Masking can restrict motion detection to specific areas within the camera view; sensitivity is adjustable. The time-stamped images provide a record that can help reconstruct and quantify an event. Video motion detection can augment standard monitoring methods to increase safety in surface mines.

Efficiently clear ice and frozen materials from ore-handling equipment. Approach Compressed air-propane torches that develop a high energy flame jet were used instead of ordinary propane torches. How it Works A high velocity high temperature stream of gases impinges on the ice and frozen materials to both melt and blast them away. The investigation of the transmission of heat into steam boilers is one of several researches now being carried on by the Bureau of Mines that have for their object the testing of methods by which the mineral fuels in this country may be used more efficiently. A better understanding of the laws governing heat transmission into boilers will result in the design of more efficient boilers, and more efficient boilers will reduce waste in the use of fuel. The results of the investigations described in this report indicate that the conductivity of the heating plates of steam boilers is so high that the present steaming capacities can be tripled or quadrupled by forcing over the heating surfaces three or four times the weight of gases now passed over them. With well-designed mechanical-draft apparatus this greater weight of gases can be forced through the boilers at a small operating cost. It is possible to increase the capacity of many of the present boilers in this way without reducing their efficiency much; in fact by a proper arrangement of the heating surfaces the efficiency can be made higher than the present rating. The efficiency of any boiler can be increased by arranging its heating surfaces in series with respect to the path of hot gases. New boilers of high efficiency can be constructed by making the cross section of the gas passages small in comparison with the length. In Bryan Donkin's book, entitled "The Practical Physics of the Modern Steam Boiler," it is stated that James Watt obtained nearly as good an evaporation per pound of coal and per square foot of heating surface as is obtained now. The remark is probably true. At any rate, about the only decided superiority of the modern steam boilers over older types is in mechanical construction, and for this superiority credit should be given to the designers of machine tools quite as much as to the boiler engineer. The main reason for tardi- ness in boiler improvement probably lies in the reluctance of educated engineers to do the dirty and disagreeable work involved in boiler tests.

One of the most difficult, longstanding engineering problems associated with coal mining is the catastrophic failure of cog mine structures known as bumps. For more than 70 years, researchers and practitioners have assembled a wealth of technical information on coal bumps in an attempt to understand and control them. However, many technical issues raised long ago are still being debated today. This paper examines past experiences and recognizes achievements in the realm of coal bumps. U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) researchers collected and analyzed 172 coal bump incident reports and compiled the pertinent statistics into a database. Actual field studied are also discussed. Examination of past experience has shown that there is no one set of defining characteristics that is responsible for coal bumps. In all cases, bumps occur when complex arrangements of geology, stress, and mining conditions interact to interfere with the orderly dissipation of stress. However, it is evident from the database that a tremendous reservoir of knowledge has been established from past experience that has unquestionably limited the severity of coal mine bumps in the United States.

A series of 45 zirconium ingots has been cast by the consumable electrode arc melting process with the object of analyzing the effects of power input from 50 to 230 kilowatts and reduced pressure furnace atmosphere to improve the quality of regular 8-inch-diameter production ingots made thereby. Electrode consumption rate, molten pool volume, melting efficiency, sidewall quality, arc stability, and yield efficiency are considered. The use of direct current and alternating current is studied. In conclusion, reduced pressure furnace operation is shown to promote electrical efficiency, ingot homogeneity, high metal yield, and are stability. INTRODUCTION Zirconium is a particularly difficult metal to melt because of its affinity for atmospheric gases and its solvent properties when molten. In addition, zirconium sponge as produced by the boll process contains minor amounts of magnesium chloride, which cause severe spattering luring melting, because of these difficulties with zirconium, and its sister metal titanium, near techniques have been developed to permit production of commercial size ingots. Among the more promising is the consumable electrode arc melting method.

The effect of small percentages of sodium chloride on the incendivity of permissible explosives was studied by the Bruceton up-and-down technique in gallery tests. Both the reduction in incendivity achieved by addition of sodium chloride and application of the test method to explosives evaluation are discussed. It is demonstrated that the up-and-down technique in gallery testing is suitable for distinguishing differences in incendivity between different explosive compositions and between lots of the same composition. The study also shows that addition of relatively small quantities of sodium chloride tends to reduce the incendivity of explosives to firedamp, but addition of sodium chloride cannot insure reduced incendivity. Any improvement attributable to the salt can be counteracted by undefined variations in the explosive. The need for experimental investigations of a number of factors that may affect the safety of permissible explosives is emphasized. C. 4 Hoist Assemblies (not man-rated) A large number of manufacturers supply materials handling winches. These units are predominately electric powered while a limited number of vendors supply air powered equipment. Air powered units are currently used extensively for underground materials handling purposes. Suppliers of materials handling equipment normally include a disclaimer statement in their published literature which clearly states that the equipment "is not designed or suitable for lifting or lowering persons " This category of commercially available equipment can be adequate for emergency man hoisting provided that its' capacity is suitably derated and provided also that the necessary safety features are incorporated. Section C. 5 details the equipment which could be added to a commercial materials hoist to meet these needs. Four commercially available hoist assemblies, two electric and two pneumatic are discussed in the following paragraphs. This equipment is typical of what is commercially available and three of the units are currently used extensively in mining applications. Each hoist description includes a remarks paragraph which identifies the additional equipment each hoist would require for emergency hoist use.

A brief description is given of various Bureau of Mines research activities that have begun since July 1974 and are not being reported on by others at the Third West Virginia University (WVU) Conference on Coal Mine Electrotechnology. An essential feature of the various projects is that they are pragmatic. The projects are applied research and are carried out both by the Bureau in-house research group and by other research groups through contract research. Projects have been directed toward wired-type communications with a special effort to modify the wired systems so as to be more effectively used. The projects are in three groups: Pager phone systems, trolley line phone systems, and guided-wire wireless communications. Also, a brief sketch is given of research that is essential for further developments in mine communications. From the early results of these various projects, the Bureau has good reason to project that there will be improved performance of existing communication systems and that communications will be extended to other individuals working in areas that are excluded from present mine communication systems.

Accordingly, some of the product was obtained and analyzed for its power to absorb, oxidize, or destroy carbon monoxide; and the results are herein reported.Description of ""Compound"" (quoted from manufacturer's circular)While the circular does not actually state that the ""compound"" protects against carbon monoxide, the inference is therein, because each of the two following quotations is below these respective headings; ""Carbon-Monoxide Poisoning,"" and ""Chronic Gassing Among Garage Workers.""The ""compound"" holds chlorine and oxygen gases in solution with formaldehyde, which unites with the hydrogen to form hydrochloric acid., giving an over-supply of oxygen which burns up carbon just as a piece of wood is burned in the fire. The formaldehyde in the composition of the ""compound"" is a great affinity for ammonia and hydrogen sulphide."

Improve the safety and reduce the cost of longwall entry support. Approach Replace the conventional wood cribbing with stronger, non-rotting and lower cost cribbing made of steel-fiber-reinforced (SFR) concrete. How It Works Conventional concrete can suddenly fail under excessive compression loads, but adding steel fibers to the concrete, before it is mixed with water, changes the failure mode to a gradual and controlled failure characteristic similar to wood. A system for making SFR concrete crib blocks was designed and developed (or use in constructing walls and cribs to support coal mine roofs. The SFR concrete cribbing is stronger and stiffer than wood, and avoids wood's disadvantages of: flammability, deterioration under chemical or bacteriological attack, methane generation, and relatively high cost. Use of SFR concrete also allows freer movement of miners, equipment, and ventilation air, because much less volume of SFR concrete is required than wood for a given amount of support, and because the roof-to-floor closure is greatly reduced by the stiffer supports.

The United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado at the University of Colorado has conducted experiments to determine the amount and composition of the non-condensable gases evolved when crude shale oil is distilled under pressure. Hydrogen sulphide is one of the components found in the complex mixture of Gases produced by the distillation of shale oil under pressure. This paper deals with the apparatus and method used in determining the amount of hydrogen sulphide evolved in the laboratory experimental cracking stills. The study required a complete extraction of all the hydrogen sulphide from the gas stream after it left the water-cooled distillate condensers and before the gas stream entered the charcoal absorber for removing the light naphtha. In devising the method it was necessary to take into account a constant variation of velocity, pressure, and percentage of sulphide in the total gas stream coming from the still. Ordinarily, the quantitative determination of hydrogen sulphide in gas is made by analyzing small samples taken at regular intervals. This estimation can be accomplished by use of the Bunts gas burette as modified by Tutriler, or by a similar method. In the industries where the flow of gas is constant and of uniform composition, this practice is sufficiently accurate for plant control. For experimental work where many variables have to be taken into consideration, as in the case at band; these methods are not applicable.

Some of these complaints may be due to improper use of the respirator, inadequate knowledge of its purpose and mode of functioning, poor choice, poor fitting, or inadequate maintenance. It is hoped that this circular will answer these complaints by discussing the various factors relating to the proper use of dust respirators in general and in coal mines in particular.It is pointed out that dust respirators are not to be used as a substitute for dust-control measures. The construction, functioning, choice, fitting, and maintenance of dust respirators are discussed.FIELD OF USEThe function of the dust respirator is to prevent the wearer from inhaling harmful quantities of dust by removing dust from the air he inhales.A dust respirator is not to be used as a permanent substitute for dust-control measures. It is to be used as a temporary substitute until dust-control measures can be instituted or as a protective means where dust-control measures are impracticable, as in applying rock dust in bituminous-coal mines.The following sections of the ""Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines in the United States"" 2/ emphasize the fact that every effort should be made to keep the amount of dust in the air of the working places as small as possible:"

There is outlined below the essential facts brought out in an investigation into the causes for emulsion difficulties as experienced at many water gas plants . The investigation was conducted under a cooperative agreement between the University of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station , the Illinois State Geological Survey , and the U. S. Bureau of Mines . Funds of the Illinois Gas Association were used to defray a part of the costs . Active assistance was rendered by the Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company , of Chicago , who furnished a laboratory at Chicago for conducting the experiments , and loaned the services of Mr. E. A. Thiele to help with the laboratory work . A full report on the results of this work will be published by the Bureau of Mines later but it is believed desirable to bring the principal results now to the attention of the industry . In almost every gas plant where carbureted water gas is made , some difficulty is experienced , at one time or another , in separating the tar fran the water that condenses from the gas . The fact that annoyance from this source is ever present in some plants , and seldom present in others , leads to the belief that certain operating variables have considerable to do with the formation of difficulty separable tarwater emulsions . Accordingly , when samples of tar were collected for laboratory study , the operating conditions and methods were simultaneously observed and recorded.

An approximate solution to the electromagnetic boundary value problem consisting of a horizontal cylindrical conductor buried in a lossy half-space and excited by an arbitrarily oriented magnetic dipole is found using an iterative perturbation technique in a double Fourier transform space. This model is used to gain insight into the anomalous fields due to strong scatterers such as pipes or tracks which would be in close proximity to an EM mine rescue operation. The novel, three-dimensional aspect of the problem (i.e., the source) imposes the complexity that the current in the cylinder is not uniform. The field expressions are ideally suited to evaluation using FFT algorithm.
