This Bureau of Mines report deals with water infusion of coalbeds, which can control methane emission at face areas during developmental mining and which may sometimes suppress dust. Studies show that water infused into the coalbed flows through the fracture system and displaces the methane in the fractures and prevents migration from the solid coal. Displaced gas migrates away from the face area that has been water infused and enters the return ventilation airways. A gradual decrease in methane emission is observed from the start of infusion until the infused zone is mined through. Depending on the permeability of the coalbed, infusion pressures ranged from 300 to 2,200 lb/in2. Face emissions in the Upper Kittanning coalbed were reduced by 89 pct; reductions of 38 to 79 pct were measured in the Pittsburgh coalbed depending on the relationship between the face cleat direction and mining direction. Respirable dust levels were reduced by about 75 pct on a longwall section in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed and by about 50 pct on a development section in the Upper Kittanning coalbed, but no statistically reliable reduction was found in the respirable dust levels in the Pittsburgh coalbed.

This Bureau of Mines study surveys the current state of technology and the various research efforts that have been undertaken to dewater the dilute phosphatic clays generated in the production of phosphate rock. The research described includes early dewatering experiments, fundamental studies of clays and of flocculation, and minor dewatering techniques such as freeze-thaw methods, the ANDCO process, moving screens, sand wick, crust development, and overburden pumping. Some methods that are currently being evaluated are described. They include the Estech sand-clay mix process using the Enviro-Clear thickener, sand-clay sandwiching, dredge mix, dredge process, and the sand-spray process. Developing technology for dewatering phosphatic clays also is described, including the Bureau of Mines rotary trommel method and the Gardinier process.

This report discusses the Bureau of Mines' efforts to develop partial protective structures for operators of low-coal shuttle cars. In coal seams 48 in high or less, full-coverage canopies are generally difficult or may be impossible to implement on high-speed face equipment due to the restrictions they impose on the operator's vision and comfort. Lim- ited coverage is one alternative that provides an acceptable level of operator protection in thin-seam applications where conventional full- coverage canopies cannot be used. Three possible limited-coverage de- sign scenarios (roll bars, sliding canopies, and flip-top canopies) were designed, fabricated, and evaluated for low-coal shuttle cars. All three designs were determined to be feasible and desirable for low-coal shuttle car application.

This report presents a computer code that has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for isolating naturally occurring clusters of data plotted on the unit hemisphere and testing these clusters against a probability distribution which admits elliptical symmetry about its mean. A listing of the computer code is provided along with an example output illustrating the delineation and analysis of clusters in fracture orientations measured in a porphyry copper deposit.

ANFO blasting agents may undergo an exothermic reaction when they contact warm ore bodies that contain pyrite and its weathering products. The reaction is very fast at temperatures above 80° C. Urea, when present in sufficient amounts, inhibits this reaction at temperatures below 180° C. But urea-ammonium nitrate mixtures are very hygroscopic and, in certain climates, may be difficult to handle in the field. Reaction-inhibiting characteristics of three compounds were reported by the Bureau of Mines in 1979. Recently, the Bureau investigated the reaction-inhibiting qualities of five additional compounds. Mixtures of ANFO, pyrite, weathering product, and prospective inhibitors were slowly heated, under conditions simulating a hot borehole, to determine prospective inhibitor capability at temperatures up to ~175° C. Small-scale thermal tests of the same mixtures were used for verification and clarification of results. Two organic compounds, phthalimide and xanthine, similar in structure to urea, failed to inhibit the reaction. Zinc oxide and calcium carbonate were found inferior to urea, though zinc oxide raised the onset of reaction from 80° C to about 140° C. Only magnesium oxide was found to be similar to urea in its inhibitory ability at temperatures below 175° C. Based on results from analysis of quenched residues, the use of more than 5 wt-pct magnesium oxide is recommended.

The Bureau of Mines conducted in-mine tests to determine correction factors applicable to low-velocity airflows (below 150 fpm) measured by the smoke cloud, vane anemometer, and oil of wintergreen tracer gas techniques 0 The average correction factors found for these methods of measurement were lower than those reported in the literature for use with higher velocity measurements. All tests measured airflows with controlled average velocities ranging from 50 to 100 fpm. Correction factors averaged about 0.75 for readings taken by the centerline smoke cloud method, remotely controlled and stickheld center" line anemometer, and split traverse stick-held anemometer. For hand-held centerline anemometer and oil of wintergreen tracer gas readings, correction factors averaged about 0.67. Since special anemometers are needed to measure airflows in this low-velocity range, and since proper calibration of these anemometers is difficult and expensive, the use of anemometers for low-velocity measurement is imprac-tical. On the other hand, smoke and oil of wintergreen give results as con-sistent as those obtained with specially calibrated, low-velocity anemometers. Furthermore, they are easy to use and inexpensive.

Electronegativities of the rare-earth elements were calculated from heats of formation. The values obtained from different compounds varied widely. The postulates of Pauling's electronegativity theory were interpreted for bonds that are primarily ionic; the study showed that many compounds obey rules of the form expected. Revised electronegativity values are given for the more electropositive elements, including the rare-earth metals (which are near magnesium in electronegativity). Estimates of un-known heats of formation are made from electronegativities and are compared with other estimates. INTRODUCTION Calculation of the electronegativities of the rare-earth elements is interesting to show how these metals stand relative to the other metals and to each other, and also possibly to systematize the thermochemical data on them.

The accident experience of the California petroleum industry for 1927 was characterized by a decrease it .the number of fatalities. The year closed with a total of 41 fatal accidents, as compared with a total of 54 for the preceding year. 3 In percentage, the figure for 1927 represents a decrease of 24 per cent from that of 1926 and evidences the promising results of organized safety work, in which the industry in California has taken an absorbing interest. The percentage of decrease for 1927 is the largest recorded in any one year since the compilation of the fatality record in the California petroleum industry was begun. Although good progress has been made during the past few years, much remains to be done to reduce still further the human and economic waste caused by accidents. This review is intended to show the employee, as well as the employer, the proximate and contributing cause of accidents. To increase the value of the report, preventive measures in various instances are suggested, on the theory that accidents of a similar nature will occur unless remedial action in taken to remove the cause.

An accurate assessment of the vertical stress on a coal seam at depth is important for mine design. Vertical stress calculation techniques presently available either are not sufficiently accurate or cannot handle complex surface topography. Therefore, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a computerized method to calculate vertical stress exerted on surfaces at depth that includes the effect of topography. Two input data sets are required: a digital elevation model containing topographic elevations and a coal seam file defining coal seam elevations at depth. Boussinesq's equation then quantifies the vertical stress resulting from topography. The computerized method was tested on a coal seam overlain by a complex topography where a vertical stress map encompassing several square miles was produced. Results show that depth mitigates the affects of surface topography, while the coal seam topography has a direct effect on the vertical stress. In comparison to the computerized method, the direct stress method overestimates stress under hills and underestimates stress under valleys. The largest difference between the two methods occurs under the steepest topographic relief. A limitation of the computerized method is that stresses cannot be accurately determined near an outcrop.

Fatal accidents at coal mines throughout the United States numbered 170 during May , 1923 , according to reports received by the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior from State mine inspectors . The production of coal during the month was 54,649,000 tons ; hence , the fatality rate was 3.11 per million tons . In May last year the fatality rate was 4.22 , based upon an output of 20,636,000 tons , including 35,000 tons of anthracite . Because of the miners ' suspension of work last year, the production of fresh-mined anthracite in May 1922 was completely stopped ; in May 1923 the anthracite output was 9,573,000 tons . For bituminous mines alone , the fatality rate in May 1923 was 2.67 per million tons as compared with 4.17 in May a year ago . During the first five months of the present year , the fatality rate for bituminous mines was 3.55 per million tons , based on 809 deaths , as against a rate of 3.70 for the corresponding months last year, based on 611 deaths . The rate for 1923 represents a reduction of 4 per cent . For anthracite mines alone the five-month fatality rate for 1923 was 5.36 per million tons , based on 228 fatalities , as against a rate of 6.72 for the first five months of 1922 based on 147 fatalities . The rate for 1923 represents a reduction of 20 per cent . The average fatality rate for May during the past ten years ( 1913-1922 ) is 3.37 per million tons for bituminous coal mines and 6.02 per million tons for anthracite mines . A gas explosion , due to open light , occurred on May 6 at Aguila , Colorado , and resulted in the death of ten men . This explosion brought the number of "major disasters " in 1923 to 4 , with a loss of 145 lives . During the first five months of last year, there were 7 similar disasters with a loss of 82 lives . The year's record to date for all fatalities from all causes shows a reduction in the fatality rates per million tons from haulage accidents and from falls of roof and coal , an increase in explosions of gas and dust and in accidents due to electricity , and no change in the fatality rate from explosives . The reductions in haulage accidents and in falls of roof and coal are particularly gratifying, because these two classes of accidents usually cause about 65 per cent of all fatalities in the coal-mining industry . THE THREE words, research, mechanization, and automation are keynote words for mining technology during 1962. Basically interrelated, they not only express the major technologic developments in mining but are the signposts pointing out the road ahead. The process represented by each of these words is evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but developments during the past year indicate a climactical stage has been reached in the process of evolution. Mining research has progressed beyond the stage of academic discussion and is a programed activity within the Federal Government,3 the mining colleges,4 and many of the large mining companies.5 Research was a major agenda item at various national and international mining meetings in 1962. A list of these meetings would include such diverse locales as the Workshop and Symposium on Computers and Computer Applications in Mining and Exploration at the University of Arizona in March; and the 5th Rock Mechanics Symposium at the University of Minnesota, in May; the Rock Mechanics Symposium at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, in September; and the Colloquium XIII, International Society for Rock Mechanics, at Salzburg, Austria, in November.

The Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model that decribes the interaction of an automated breathing and metabolic simulator, or lung, with a self-contained· self-rescuer that is supplied compressed oxygen. The model can be used to predict the gas partial volumes of 0z, Nz, and COz in the lung and in the self-rescuer breathing bag for a prescribed metabolic state that characterizes the lung. Nonlinear rate equations are used to describe the temporal evolution of the gas partial volumes. A numerical procedure was established with a FORTRAN computer program to solve these equations, which correspond to a given metabolic state. Examples are presented of applications of the model to predict bag volume and bag oxygen concentration changes with time when the bag is controlled by an automated breathing simulator. Under certain restrictive conditions, the model equations can also be used to analytically pre-dict the time required for the bag to reach a maximum or minimum volume. The model equation in this latter case was extended to transi-tions between metabolic states, with transitions described as exponential growth or decay processes.

[In previous contributions** the writer has called attention to important relations that faulting bears to the migration and accumulation of oil end gas. It has been pointed that favorably situated parts of oil and gas bearing, sands have been enriched by migration art segregation incident to faulting. The escape of water through natural passages such. as fault fissures has induced wide spread hydraulic currents through the beds toward these, points, of diminished pressure and these water currents, plus buoyancy hove contributed largely toward the migration of oil to favorable rock entrapments in the vicinity of the faults.*** The propulsive force of expanding gas has been one of the contributing causes for the hydraulic currents. Paradoxical as it may seem, the escape of gas with entrained oil through fissures has been on important factor In the migration, and accumulation of oil in many faulted areas. Compressed gas is the propulsive force by which oil generally moves to producing wells. It is also one of the propulsive forces by which oil has moved with or even ahead of water under conditions: of differential pressure brought about by faulting.]

Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted investigations to evaluate the potential for ground water contamination by mine waste used as backfill. Samples of cemented waste backfill and water discharging from drillholes and seeps were collected to use in chemical analyses and laboratory tests to determine the physical and chemical factors that control release of heavy metals to ground water. Greater water retention by cemented backfill (as compared to uncemented sandfill) reduces the surface are aexposed to oxidation, which in turn reduces the amount of acid produced. The acid is neutralized by the cement and minerals contained in the backfill. The grain-size distribution of tailings used for backfill affects the structural integrity of cemented backfill under attack by acidic water; breakdown of the backfill structure releases neutralizing materials faster. Backfilled stopes in rock with low hydraulic conductivities will constitute preferential flow paths after mine flooding; however, the rate of flow through backfill will be much slower than when the stope is partially saturated during mine operation. Considering all factors, acid generation and release of metal ions from cemented backfill should be less than in uncemented sandfill.

Improve the safety and comfort of operators of large mining equipment. Approach Develop an improved driver restraint system that is easy to use, reliable, and cost-effective, while providing increased protection in the event of a collision or rollover. The Novel Restraint System There are several problems associated with conventional lap-belt type restraint systems. Among these are: restriction of movement, lack of comfort, and fear of entrapment. Standard seatbelts become dirty and oily from lying on the vehicle cab floor and can ruin a driver's clothes. Some haulage equipment may not even have seatbelts available to drivers since they are sometimes removed during maintenance activities or as a result of vandalism. Recognizing a need to address such problems by providing a more acceptable means of driver restraint, the Bureau of Mines designed and fabricated a novel vest-type restraint system. The vest is designed to be worn during a driver's 8-hour shift and would be issued much like safety glasses, hard hats and safety shoes, thus becoming part of the operator's individual protective equipment and assuring that each vehicle has a restraint system when in operation. Iron foundries that melt automobile scrap produce flue dusts averaging about 32 percent zinc and 6 percent lead. Some is sold to smelters, but because of the meager return and difficulty in handling, most of the dust is discarded. As part of the Bureau of Mines program to find uses for mineral wastes, research was initiated to develop an economical process to recover zinc and lead from the flue dust. Research encompassed the extraction of zinc and lead by fuming, leaching, and agglomeration. Controlled vacuum fuming of zinc to produce Prime Western zinc and a lead-rich residue was the most effective method for treating the dust. This process involved two distillations, or fumings, with carbon and methane as reductants, and resulted in recovery of 91.4 percent of the zinc in a Prime Western grade product, and 98 percent of the lead. Hydrometallurgical techniques involved several leaching methods, but the simultaneous extraction of iron, manganese, and copper resulted in contamination of the solution and made the zinc recovery processes too complicated. Agglomeration was done by pelletizing or briquetting the dust for possible use as feed to a zinc smelter.

Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. Reduce the noise levels to which operators of double-drum longwall shearers are exposed without compromising the operational effectiveness of the shearer. The Problem Noise produced by double-drum longwall shearers can be harmful to machine operators. Typical noise levels at the lead-drum operator position range from 100 to 105 dBA, and Federal noise regulations allow only one to two hours of exposure per shift at these levels. Noise radiated by the shearer cutting drum is the primary contributor to the overall noise level. However, test of a noise-controlled cutting drum developed by the Bureau of Mines reduced the operator noise level to 95 dBA, thereby increasing the allowable operating time to four hours per shift. Approach The key design aspect of the noise-controlled shearer drum is its reduced vibration-al response to coal-cutting forces. Laboratory studies have shown that these forces are concentrated in the low-frequency region (500 Hz and below). Areal distributions for ash, total sulfur, and sulfur forms were developed for the top 12 inches, the middle section, the bottom 8 inches, and the total seam of Pittsburgh coal in southwestern Pennsylvania. The sulfur and ash exhibit an apparent high local variability. As a general rule, both the sulfur and ash show high concentrations in the top 12 inches and in the bottom 8 inches of the seam relative to the concentrations observed in the middle section of the seam. The high-low sulfur and ash concentrations in the top 12 inches of the seam are not coincident with the high-low sulfur and ash concentrations in either the middle section or the bottom 8 inches of the seam. With respect to sulfur and ash, it is suggested that the top and bottom sections of the Pittsburgh coal may reflect both a syngenetic and epigenetic origin. Present data support the belief that paleotopography controlled Pittsburgh seam deposition. Evidence is presented to show that channels were cut at various times into the semilithified sediments that buried the Pittsburgh seam. In this channeling process, portions of the Pittsburgh coal may have been eroded away. Following channel development, the lower part of the Pittsburgh sandstone filled the complex system of braided channels to produce the "want areas" encountered in present mining operations. In localized areas of the Pittsburgh seam, impingement of Pittsburgh sandstone may be responsible for the lateral displacement of the coal. Information of this type becomes important in the assessment of exploration data, in the development of a quality control system for mine output, and in mine life planning.

Develop an alternative to water bath exhaust conditioners (water scrubbers) for permissible diesel equipment used in gassy mines. Background Water scrubbers are a safety device used on diesel-powered vehicles in gassy mines. Exhaust from the engine passes through the scrubber, where it is cooled, and any flames or sparks present in the exhaust are extinguished. This prevents the ignition of combustible mine dust or methane that may be present. Unfortunately, water scrubbers consume large amounts of water and require frequent maintenance. Approach Methods that do not require water replenishment and frequent maintenance were investigated. The dry exhaust conditioning system was selected for investigation because no water is consumed and existing heat exchanger technology can be adapted to underground mine vehicles. In accordance with U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements, the system was designed to cool exhaust and trap flames and sparks. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed and evaluated a system for large engines and evaluated a second system for smaller engines. Both systems were evaluated on an engine test bed; if warranted, the system was then tested underground.
