This paper examines the new water-hydraulic (hydropowered) drill rigs that have been developed and proven in the last decade primarily in tabular, shallow-dipping, narrow-reef hard-rock South African mines. These include drill rigs for flat-end tunnel development, narrow inclined raises and winzes, large inclines and declines and longhole-based developments such as ore passes and vent raises. The hydropower technology rigs offer advantages both in safety and performance over traditional compressed-air-powered, hand-held development, and are generally more cost-effective than imported oil electro-hydraulic drill rigs. Furthermore, hydropowered rigs are inherently energy-efficient. The benefits of hydropower are discussed and a ?comprehensive development model? is presented which demonstrates that ore-bodies can be accessed in significantly shorter times. ?Localized? half level hydropower systems are introduced and a range of ancillary equipment available is listed.

Spain is a major producer of dimension stone, which is one of the most important industrial sectors in the northwest of Spain. This justifies the maintenance of these industries, although the technical and environmental requirements for their continuity are increasingly demanding. The main target of this paper is to present a new methodology in order to obtain k-ratio stress values on the basis of flat jack measurements and finite element numerical back- analysis with Rocscience© RS2 software. Continuous iterations were performed to try to find a relationship between the k₀ and the measured stress in the tunnel roof and sidewalls. It focuses on technical aspects of the method for designing mine chambers in the slate industry that were previously mined by open pit methods. The size of the chambers impacts the operating cost, and the dimensioning of a correct support ensures better efficiency and safety. Correct knowledge of the k₀ therefore is critical for the design of the support. The proposed new method entails a simplification of the classical procedure for estimating the k-ratio.

The presence of colloidal silica negatively impacts various hydrometallurgy processes. This paper details the nature of colloidal silica, operational issues caused by colloidal silica, as well as various mitigation measures. MMG Kinsevere observed severe phase-continuity instability, increased crud formation, and reagent consumption, and reduced current efficiency in electrowinning with a deterioration in copper quality. Historical mitigation measures were initially implemented but failed to solve the problem. MMG Kinsevere successfully achieved efficient silica removal without adverse effect on the solvent extraction with the use of DEHSCOFIX® SC12 coagulant. A week into the coagulant trial, silica concentration had dropped from > 1500 mg/L to within 500 mg/L. The solventextraction plant recovered its stability and again operated at maximum capacity. Additionally, improvement was observed on current efficiency and copper cathodes quality with use of the coagulant.

The shear behaviour of infilled joints produced from ordinary gypsum plaster (gyprock) and bentonite was investigated in the laboratory under Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) conditions. Shear tests were performed on saw-tooth profiles having Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC) of 4.75 and 9.25 under an initial normal stress (sno) of 0.30 to 1.10 MPa, and at a normal stiffness (kn) of 8.5 kN/mm. Test data under the same sno and infill thickness to asperity height ratio (t/a) were analysed for two different sets of JRC. The peak shear stress plotted against the t/a ratio under constant sno revealed an increase in peak shear stress with the increase in JRC, up to a t/a ratio of about unity. The effect of roughness on the peak shear stress was observed to be minimal when the t/a ratio exceeded 1.40. A mathematical model for the prediction of peak shear stress due to the increased infill thickness has been developed based on a hyperbolic stress-strain relationship and energy balance principles. The model predictions are in good agreement with the laboratory observations. Le comportement de cisaillement des joints remplis produits à partir de plâtre ordinaire et de bentonite a été étudié dans le laboratoire sous des conditions de rigidité normales constantes. Des essais de cisaillement ont été réalisés sur des profils en dents de scie ayant des coefficients de rugosité des joints (CRJ) variant de 4,75 à 9,25 sous un effort normal initial (sno) de 0,30 à 1,10 MPa, et une rigidité normale (kn) de 8,5 kN/mm. Le résultat des essais conduits sous la même contrainte et épaisseur de remplissage au rapport aspérité/hauteur (t/a) ont été analysés pour deux ensembles différents de CRJ. La variation de l'effort de cisaillement maximal contre le rapport t/a sous une contrainte normale constante a indiqué une augmentation de l'effort de cisaillement maximal avec l'augmentation du CRJ, jusqu'à un rapport de t/a proche de l'unité. L'effet de la rugosité sur l'effort de cisaillement maximal a été minimal quand le rapport t/a a excédé 1,40. Un modèle mathématique pour la prévision de l'effort de cisaillement maximal dû à l'épaisseur accrue du remplissage des joints a été développé sur la base de la variation entre contraintes hyperboliques et déformation et sur des principes de bilan énergétique. Les prévisions du modèle sont en bon accord avec les observations de laboratoire. Das Scherverhalten in mit gewöhnlichem Gips und Bentonit gefüllten Klüften wurde im Labor unter Bedingungen konstanter Normalsteifheit (CNS) untersucht. Scherversuche wurden durchgefürt für Sägezahnprofile mit Werten des Fugenrauhigkeitskoeffizienten (JRC) von 4.75 und 9.25 unter Normalspannungs-werten (sno) von 0.30 bis 1.10 MPa, und bei Normalsteifheit (kn) von 8.5 kN/mm. Testresultate für gleiche Werte von sno und Verhältnis Fülldicke zu Rauhigkeit (t/a) wurden untersucht für zwei verschiedene Werte von JRC. Die Beziehung zwischen maximaler Schubspannung und und t/a Verhältnis unter konstantem sno zeigte einen Anstieg der maximalen Schubspannung mit zunehmendem JRC, bis zu einem t/a Verhältnis von etwa 1.0. Der Einfluss der Rauhigkeit auf den Maximalwert der Schubspannung war minimal solange das t/a Verhältnis den Wert von 1.40 überstieg. Ein mathematisches Modell wurde entwickelt für die Vorhersage der Schubspannung die von zusätzlicher Fülldicke erwartet werden kann, ausgehend von einer hyperbolischen Spannungs-Dehnung Beziehung und dem Energiegleichgewichts-prinzip. Die Modellvorhersagen zeigten gute Uebereinstimmung mit den Laborbeobachtungen.

One of the consequences of large-scale opencast mining for coal is the disposal of an enormous volume of overburden material that needs to be removed. With the enlargement of opencast mines and associated high stripping ratios, the volume of overburden extraction is rising. Overburden from the initial mine cut has to be necessarily dumped outside the mining area until enough void is created inside the mine for back-filling operations. The quantity of overburden placed outside the mining area normally varies from 10% to 30% of the total overburden removal. The stability of these dumps placed outside the mining area is of prime importance from the point of view of smooth operations of the mines and safety of persons in and around the dumping area. Owing to increasing pressure on land use, mine operators do not have any other option other than to place the waste dumps very near to the surface edge of the pit, which may lead to failure of the topsoil benches of the working pit. This study identified major controlling parameters that influence a stable but economic combination of height and slope angle of external dumps located close to the edge of an open coal pit.

De Beers' Finsch Mine is situated in the Northern Cape province, 170 km northwest of Kimberley. The concentrator facility, designed and constructed by Bateman Engineering, was commissioned in 1967 and upgraded in 1979 using diamond liberation and extraction technology available at the time of design. Since then significant advances in diamond processing and technology have been made and these -have been incorporated into the new main treatment plant and recovery plant flowsheets, making diamond liberation and recovery from the Pre-1979 dumps a viable economic option at Finsch."

South Africa has one of the largest Cr-related industries in the world and generates large amounts of Cr-containing smelter dusts. It is normal practice to scrub Cr from the furnace off-gas in water, and to recover the Cr by adsorption, followed by recycling of the loaded adsorbent into the furnace. A study was conducted to find a low-cost adsorbent that is capable of removing sufficient Cr from the solutions generated by scrubbing. The test work focused on the evaluation of different clay minerals (attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolinite) as adsorbents for Cr. Cr(VI) could only be adsorbed after prereduction with e.g. ascorbic acid (ASA). An 80% removal of Cr(VI) could be achieved from a solution containing 20 mg/L Cr using bentonite clay after reduction with ASA. Attapulgite and kaolinite adsorbed less than 55% Cr after reduction with ASA. Both ASA and ferrous salts were found to be suitable reducing agents. The use of acid mine drainage (AMD) was also investigated as a low-cost alternative reducing agent, as AMD usually contains iron. The Cr(VI) reduction potential of the AMD was determined by redox titration against a solution containing 50 mg/L Cr(VI). Studies show that AMD can potentially be used as a reducing agent in a Cr removal process if it is available on site.

"Despite the pre-eminence of the Jwaneng Diamond Mine as the world’s richest diamond mine, the discovery story has long been clouded in mystery. This is the 45-year old untold story of the Jwaneng discovery and contemporaneous Bechuanaland/Botswana political and socioeconomic history. Diamond exploration by De Beers in Bechuanaland began in 1955, with the first true kimberlite discovery near Letlhakane in 1967, before Clifford’s Rule was applied and before the use of indicator mineral chemistry. Surface deflation soil sampling and bioturbation by termites was the foundation for exploration into the Kalahari. The 1962 reconnaissance programme south of Jwaneng had failed to make any discoveries. Improved sampling methods were applied to the Kalaharicovered areas in 1969 and positive results were received by year-end. The Whateley’s Wish percussion drill-hole in December 1972 was confirmed as Jwaneng 2424D/K2 with drill core in early 1973. Jumper drills were required to penetrate the Kalahari sand cover. Diamond resources were demonstrated despite multiple technical problems. IntroductionThe Jwaneng Diamond Mine is, by value, the world’s richest diamond mine. Harry Oppenheimer is quoted as saying that Jwaneng is ‘the most important primary deposit found anywhere in the world since the discovery at Kimberley more than a century ago.’ (Taylor III, 1982) The mine opened in 1982 after some nine years of evaluation and construction since discovery in February 1973. Debswana (2017) states that 2015 production was 7.87 Mt of ore from which 10.408 million carats were recovered at a grade of 132 carats per 100 t (cpht). Although the value is not reported, it was noted that Jwaneng contributes 60–70% of Debswana’s total revenue from all mines, including Orapa, Damtshaa, and Letlhakane (Debswana, 2017)."

"Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluoridesl.2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02?SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F?XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo-dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

Several high-impact tailings dam failures around the world in recent years have placed a renewed focus on the stability of tailings dams and pointed to potential shortcomings in traditional drained design and safety evaluation procedures. A need to consider undrained shear strength in the design of tailings facilities has become apparent. However, there are specific requirements that need to be met before undrained shearing occurs. In South Africa, the last major failure was likely the Merriespruit disaster in 1994, which leads to the question of whether the conditions required for undrained shearing are readily applicable to South African tailings dams. This paper describes research at the University of Pretoria that has recently commenced to further investigate the conditions required for undrained failure to occur. The research includes laboratory and field testing to replicate these conditions in the laboratory and relate them to those found in an active tailings dam.

South Africa depends to a considerable measure on the exploitation of mineral reserves and the processing of these minerals. One of the prime requirements for the mining and metallurgical industry to continue in this vital role is access to sufficient energy in a suitable form. Hence, four important questions are discussed: Does South Africa have sufficient energy for the processing of its minerals and metals! Will the cost of energy allow South Africa's minerals and metals to compete on world markets? Can mining and metallurgical processes become more energy-efficiency Can mining and metallurgical processes be adapted to the various forms of energy that may have to be utilized in the future? It is concluded that about 26 per cent of the extractable reserves of coal would be required in the mining and processing of 50 per cent of South Africa's reserves of gold, platinum-group metals, copper, iron, ferrochromium, and ferromanganese. However, the reducing agents required exceed the extractable reserves but not the total estimates of mineable in situ resources of metallurgical coal and anthracitic coal. Even under the severe constraint that coal could become virtually the sole source of energy, only about three-quarters of the extractable reserves of coal would have been consumed by the year 2025. The reasonably assured resources of uranium metal that can be recovered at less than $80 per kilogram are considerable and, at current conversion efficiencies to electricity, are equivalent to one-fifth of the extractable reserves of coal. The rate of exportation of energy in the form of U30. was about five times that of coal in 1978. It is pointed out that the price of energy has a direct effect on the competitiveness of metals, and, although constituting only a small proportion of the selling price of precious metals, it represents a significant proportion of the selling price of copper and metals recovered from oxide ores. The scope for the conservation of energy appears to be greater in the extraction and conversion of primary energy-carriers to electrical energy than in other mining or metallurgical fields. Provided that alternative sources of energy can be converted to electrical energy, they can be applied to the mining and metallurgical industries. The decision as to which type of energy should be used in specific mining and metallurgical situations is complicated, and is likely to be subjected to closer scrutiny than in the past. The hope is expressed that the tentative conclusions reached will give rise to more-quantitative analyses from those qualified to undertake such an exercise. Inevitably, the questions asked at the outset give rise to more questions, and the more interesting ones are posed in the context of each conclusion.

With the continuous increase in ore mineralogical complexity coupled with decreasing head grades, there is a need for mining industries to process large tonnages of material to meet global metal demands. Smarter, cheaper techniques are required to better map ore mineralogical variations proceeding to pre-concentration (flotation) stages for higher performance and metal recoveries. This paper is aimed at briefly reviewing previous studies on different selected ore mineralogy, with the focus on their pulp chemistry, to identify relationships which aid quicker flotation feed variation monitoring. Very little published work exists linking pulp chemistry parameters to flotation feed mineralogical variation. A successful application implies maximising grades at higher metal recoveries and reducing the cost of reagent for a better performing flotation circuit. Slope stability is a fundamental part of a successful mining operation. It impacts directly on the safety of personnel and the economics of the mine. The Jwaneng Mine in Botswana is planning a push back of 644m depth in the south east wall. Mining will commence in 2010 and be completed in 2024. This will put the mine in the deep pit category. The mine has invested in extensive geotechnical data gathering and design programs that started as far back as 2003 for the south east wall. The south east wail of Jwaneng Mine is characterized by foliation that dips adversely into the mining faces. The orienta1ion of the foliation is variable due to intense tectonic movements that have also caused the occurrence of faults that are sub-vertical. A considerable amount of information on the characteristics of structural patterns and the rock mass has been collected. This paper presents an overview of the feasibility level geotechnical design that is about to be concluded.

Some observations on 'ancient' mining at Phalaborwa C. E. MORE. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) A brief account is given of historical references to the Phalaborwa area, the first being to the mountain of copper and iron sought by Francois de Cuiper in 1725. These are followed by a description of several finds in the area, which are related to finds described in the literature and to Bantu tradition on the subject. Phalaborwa is one of the earliest known mining sites in the Republic of South Africa, Loolekop having been a mining centre, as shown by carbon-14 dating, since 770 A.D.

The shift in beneficiation methodologies has been disruptive to the traditional skills set of the industry, but evolutionary change continues and has been beneficial to the quality of the final product.

Sperrylite (PtAs₂) comprises about 21% of the platinum group minerals (PGMs) in the Platreef ore and regularly reports to the tailings due to its poor floatability. Hence, improving its recovery will be of great economic value to the South African PGM industry. The reasons for its poor floatability are not yet clear. This paper seeks to understand the interactions occurring between PtAs₂ and common thiol collectors, viz. potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX), sodium normal dibutyl dithiophosphate (SNBDTP) and sodium normal mono butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). By understanding its interactions with these collectors, it is hypothesised that it will be possible to suggest ligands that may help improve the floatability of sperrylite. Mineral-collector interactions were studied by determining the molar energy of interaction using isothermal titration calorimetry and electrochemical techniques. The hydrophobicity of the mineral before and after adsorption of the collectors was determined by heat of immersion and its flotation response determined by microflotation tests. Microflotation tests using synthetic sperrylite at pH 9 showed low collectorless recovery of 34.8% and after adding the equivalent of one pseudo-monolayer of the PNBX collector, the recovery of 32.5% was obtained. Moreover, the addition of up to three pseudo-monolayers coverage of PNBX did not result in any increase in flotation recovery. A small recovery improvement was noted when synthetic plant water with the ionic strength of 0.0484 mol/L was used, but this did not hold for all collectors, with SNBDTP exhibiting higher recoveries in distilled water. "The aim of the audit was to determine whether the mining project environmental impact assessments (EIAs) in Kenya are undertaken according to international best practice. A sample of 50 EIA reports for the 2007–2016 period was evaluated using 18 criteria in the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) guidelines. The findings showed that only two criteria were considered ‘excellent’ according to the ELAW guidelines, namely baseline environmental assessment and prediction of physical impacts. Six criteria were found to be ‘satisfactory’, including prediction of social impacts, analysis of alternative options, and impact mitigation. The reports were quite weak in terms of: consideration of all phases in the mining cycle, environmental regulatory framework, prediction of biological impacts, stakeholder consultation and engagement, integration of human right issues, and integration of climate change and cost-benefit analysis. It is therefore recommended that the Kenyan National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) should consider tightening the EIA terms and conditions in the approval of statutory terms of reference (ToR) for full-scale mining EIAs to ensure improved performance of EIA as a tool for environmental protection. IntroductionThe nexus between society and the environment has continued to generate interest because the environment is the source of goods and services that sustain the various needs of human beings as outlined in the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) (Armstrong and Peart, 2000; Sutton 2004; Chakrabarti 2007; Strange and Bayley 2008). All the five generic categories of societal needs, namely physiological needs (food, water, clothing, medicines, etc.), residential and occupational needs (shelter, transport, energy, etc.), economic needs (tradeable goods and services), leisure and recreational needs (tourism), and cultural and spiritual needs (e.g. sacred resources and ecosystems) (Mwaura et al. 2016) are addressed by the environment. Consequently, a wide range of development sectors have been established around the world in order to address the above needs (Lederer, Galtung, and Antal, 1980; Rammelsberg et al., 2006; Noonan, 2014). All these development sectors rely entirely on the environment for their proper functioning, as shown in Table I."
