In recent years attempts have been made to develop software packages for shallow seismic refraction data analysis. In most cases, mainframe computers were used which were generally non-interactive, did not support graphics and were unfriendly to operate. With these facts in mind, a user-friendly interactive processing package written in PASCAL has been developed for the IBM PC. The package allows the following operations to be performed. (1) data tying, equalisation of reciprocal and common shot times; (2) overburden velocity analysis; (3) refraction leg identification on time-distance plots; (4) elevation correction of refractor data; (5) forward and backward phantoming; refraction leg extrapolation; (6) 'bedrock' velocity analysis; (7) 'time-depth' plot computation; (8) depth calculation. Numbers (6) - (8) above involve Palmer's generalised reciprocal technique of refraction data interpretation. The program is extremely flexible and makes much use of interactive high resolution graphics and 'popup' onscreen menus. The velocity analysis sections have statistical routines built in to provide error estimation. The programs allow data interpretation to take place in the field with a portable microcomputer while the data are still being collected; this is obviously not possible with any cumbersome mainframe-based software. Hence it becomes possible to see the effects of varying the data collection parameters (such as geophone spacing) upon the resulting interpretation and so enable adjustments to be made where necessary. Hard copies of the data may be obtained at all stages of the interpretation process using a small (A3) plotter, or the graphics may be dumped to a dot- matrix printer if a suitable plotter is not available.

Iron, in the form of steel and stainless steel, is the most commonly used metal in the world. Plain steels corrode and oxidize easily, while stainless steels exhibit improved corrosion and oxidation resistance. It has been found that rare earth metal (REM) additions, such as cerium and erbium, result in the improvement of the abovementioned properties in iron-containing compounds. Gadolinium is a REM, however, there is very little information available on the influence of gadolinium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of iron-containing compounds. Thus, the purpose of this research project was to determine the influence of gadolinium additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of mild steel and 316 stainless steel. Ten alloys were produced for the purposes of this research. Five of the alloys had a base composition of mild steel while the remaining five had base composition of 316 stainless steel. The alloys for each of the base composition contained gadolinium additions of 0.1, 0.5, 1.2, and 5 weight per cent. The as-cast and the cold-rolled alloys were analysed. The alloys responded well to the cold-rolling with the exception of the 5 weight per cent gadolinium mild steel and stainless steel alloys. These alloys were extremely brittle and underwent a significant amount of cracking during the cold rolling process. A microstructural analysis of the alloys was conducted using a light optical microscope, while the chemical analysis of the alloys was conducted using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The resulting microstructures and EDS analyses revealed that the gadolinium displayed minimal solubility in the ferrite matrix of the mild steel alloys and minimal solubility in the austenite matrix of the stainless steel alloys. Instead the gadolinium formed as an interdendritic secondary phase in both alloys. EDS analysis revealed that the secondary phase in both alloys was gadolinium-rich. Vickers microhardness tests conducted on both alloys revealed that the alloys were composite-like, with a hard, brittle gadolinium-containing compound dispersed throughout a softer, more ductile matrix. The corrosion resistance of the alloys was determined through potentiodynamic anodic polarization tests. Two solutions were used for the corrosion rate tests: a 0.5 weight per cent NaC1 solution and a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The results from the mild steel alloys revealed that in both the solutions, the corrosion potentials and the corrosion resistance of the alloys increased with increasing gadolinium concentration up to 1 weight per cent. The corrosion rate test results from the stainless steel alloys revealed that the passivation current density and corrosion resistance of the alloys increased with increasing gadolinium concentration in both solutions. The oxidation resistances of the mild steel and stainless steel alloys were determined through the use of a Netzstch Simultaneous Thermal Analyser. For both the mild steel and the stainless steel alloys, it was found that the oxidation resistance of the alloys increased as the concentration of gadolinium increased when compared to the as-received mild steel and stainless steel samples. This could be due to a strongly adhering gadolinium oxide scale that formed on the surface of the alloys and resulted in the protection of the mild steel and the stainless steel.

Introduction The introduction of teleremote systems to underground mining can provide a significant improvement in the performance of a mine when compared with conventional mining techniques. This paper presents the concepts of teleremote mining in a case study showing how the systems work and the competitive advantage autonomation of mining techniques will provide for underground metal mining operations into the future. This paper is divided into two sections: the Mining Automation Program and What is next? On January 1st 1996 Inco Limited, Tamrock Oy, DYNO Explosives Group and CANMET formed a consortium for the development of teleremote mining equipment called the ‘Mining Automation Program’ or MAP. This program included a five-year research and development agreement that combines the talents of the above organizations to create mining equipment and systems for autonomating mining. The projects are based on the communication system currently sold and marketed by Automated Mining Systems Limited. The main components of the program investigated the development of a positioning and navigation module, autonomated systems using teleremote techniques for development and stoping, and software systems to support the use of this equipment. The program included the establishment of a test mine, at Inco’s 175 Orebody near Copper Cliff North Mine. This facility was unique allowing collaboration of companies and research organizations inthe design and testing of techniques and equipment used to apply autonomation to mining. Since the inception of the project other research alliances have been added to enhance the program. These include the application of ground support (Meyco/ Master Builders), muck pile recognition, the broadening of telecommunications links (PRECARN Associates Inc.-MALTA project) and the collection and processing of drilling core through the automated diamond drilling project (J.K.S. Boyles). MAP began as an idea a number of years ago with the fundamental question ‘Can an ore-body be profitably mined through autonomation?’ The concept was to design mining equipment and systems that would allow the teleremote operation of a mine. Automation was only one componentof this much larger teleremote mining issue. To start with, it was essential to prove or disprove the feasibility of this concept. The fundamental requirements are: • Telecommunications • Positioning • Navigation • Equipment • Software • Electronics • Mining Engineering • Organization. Each of these had to be considered. Technically, the feasibility of the project hinged on the successful development of a high capacity communication network, an accurate underground positioning system, a navigation system and finally the electronics and software that could integrate these. Mining equipment that could perform all the mining functions was the next requirement, along with explosive supplies that could be delivered to the holes teleremotely. Whatever the systems developed, they must be able to work in both bulk and selective mining situations and in varying conditions within a mine. Finally, the organizational issues of a change from our current method of operation to teleremote mining had to be understood. After five years of research and development the answer to the question ‘Can an orebody be profitably mined using autonomation techniques?’ is YES! There are still hurdles to overcome, however, the basic premise has been proven. The development and production of underground tunnels and stopes has been done. There have been interesting outcomes in terms of reduced effort to accomplish mining and the total time to mine. Definitions •Automationis the process by which a machine or system is run continuously including the ability for the system to self-correct. •Autonomationis the same as automation except that the process does not self-correct. •Teleremote operation is the operation of mining equipment over a network from any location out of line-of-sight of the machine. •Equipment Automationis the addition of technology to a machine that allows for unmanned operation of a machine and thus enhances the productivity of the operator. For example, a guidance system that allows a load-haul-dump to drive by itself, thus freeing the operator for other tasks. •Teleremote mining describes a mine process that combines the use of teleremote operation (potentially with some automation), positioning and process engineering, monitoring and control. •Tamrock DataSoloTMis a computerized drilling rig as shown in Figure 1. •Tamrock DataMini™ is a computerized development drill rig used for drifting and construction tunneling as shown in Figure 2.•Tamrock Toro 450™ is a LHD (Figure 3).

Recent developments in survey techniques and measuring equipment now allow for an accurate assessment of external coating condition and cathodic protection performance. These developments build on 20 years of experience of using Direct Current Voltage Gradient (DCVG) and Close Interval Potential Survey (CIPS) methods. The techniques use the latest advances in measurement systems coupled to a bespoke data processing system. The paper describes tests and trial surveys carried out on a hydrocarbon transmission pipeline in West Africa during 2005. The survey works described and conclusions drawn are from the data collected. Of particular interest are the apparent capacitance effects which are thought to occur under disbonded coating and the characteristics that these may show on the integrated CIPS and recorded DCVG profiles. This paper was originally presented at the Cefracor conference in Aix, France, in June 2006 The pipeline was originally installed on a phased basis between 1989 and 1994. The external coatings were three layer polyethylene factory coating and shrink sleeve field joint coating. An impressed current cathodic protection system was installed. The pipeline has subsequently been affected by disbondment of the coatings. It was a primary objective of the trials to attempt to identify such affected areas. In addition to a technically detailed account of the survey works undertaken and the results obtained the authors will consider the practical and commercial aspects of these surveys with input that provides a perspective from the specifier, pipeline surveyor, pipeline operations personnel and the pipeline owner. It is intended that the data presented will provide greater awareness of the benefits and limitations of the techniques used and their role for both stand-alone interpretation and the integration of the survey information with other inspection methods used for external corrosion assessment. The application of the described techniques is well developed and proven to locate and characterise through?coating defects and to provide a full audit of cathodic protection status. However, the possibility of the techniques being able to indicate disbonded coating is unproven and further tests and trials are planned which may allow a greater understanding of the electrical characteristics which are believed to be associated with disbonded coatings which may or may not be filled with an electrolyte. Further work is currently planned in West Africa, South Africa and Scotland in order to improve the understanding of this technique and to determine if the reported indications do actually represent a method of locating disbonded coatings. A project was funded by the Australian coal industry to investigate the mechanisms that might lead to sample bias when using cross-belt cutters, in order to help coal industry personnel to make better decisions about the purchase, maintenance and operation. It concentrated on DEM modelling of skew cutters. These are set at an angle to the belt with the intention of minimizing disturbance to the non-sampled material. Two bias mechanisms are likely to cause bias for cross-belt cutters. Waves of material are bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters and material is thrown by the leading edges of cutter blades for all types of cross-belt cutters. These mechanisms cause some parts of the load of material on a belt to be over-represented. The effects of these mechanisms cannot be made to be negligible, so cross-belt samplers cannot be trusted to produce unbiased samples, especially for segregated streams of material. However, it is possible to give a bound on the maximum likely bias. The grades of two portions of the stream can be estimated by stopping the belt and shovelling off 1/3 of the cross-section of the load on the belt into a container, concentrating on the final side of the belt and the top of the load. The remaining material should be put into another container and the difference in grade determined. The maximum likely bias is typically about 10% of this difference. For a cross-belt cutter, having an extraction ratio near to 100% is not a reliable indication that the cutter has little or no bias. Some bias mechanisms affecting cross-belt sample cutters make sample mass too high and some make it too low, so an extraction ratio near 100% can occur if two bias mechanisms are both active. Strict implementation of International Standards for representative sampling of coal is difficult for routine monitoring, due to time, technical, and economic constraints. A large percentage of the total sampling variance arises from errors accumulated during the earliest stages of sample collection. Modified procedures on the precision of the final result leads to controversies between the sellers and customers for coal. Manual collection of coal samples violates the principle of correct sampling, that all fragments must have an equiprobable chance of being in the sample. In addition, manual size reduction of large numbers of samples is time consuming and involves human errors. A coal quality management procedure in alignment with the relevant ISO standards that describes the sampling protocol has been implemented, and current sampling and laboratory analysis of coal from base load mines (mines situated at the mouth of the power station) are well established. For import coal, sampling is performed during unloading by auto-mechanical sampling (AMS). Due to logistical and safety issues associated with multiple suppliers, Eskom opted for the coal to be sampled at source on a pre-certification basis. Online analysers provide a fast, accurate, real-time method of determining the total moisture and elemental composition of coal and is important to the coal industry for pricing, quality control, and reduction of SO2 emissions. Elemental analyses include S, Si, Al, Fe, Ca, Na, Mg, Mn, Ti, K and Cl. Measurement of S is dictated by the control of SO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. Elements such as Na and Cl have adverse effects on boilers, causing fouling and slagging. Available online elemental analyser technologies include prompt gamma neutron activation analyses (PGNAA), recommended for major element determination, and pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis(PFTNA), that is capable of measuring the major and minor chemical elements contained in coal. These systems utilize nuclear reactions to produce characteristic gamma rays that are used for identifying various chemical elements. By acquiring the gamma rays in three different time windows, there is a significant reduction of the background as compared with the spectra taken with a radio isotopic source.

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best `grade descriptor' is discussed.

To achieve maximum efficiency in any purification stage, the flotation should be continued until the concentrate grade reaches the feed grade. During sampling from rougher cells of the Iranian Sarcheshmeh copper concentrator plant 1, it was revealed that the concentrate grade of the last five cells of rougher circuit was close to feed grade. Therefore, it was suggested that the concentrate of the aforementioned cells be mixed with rougher feed. In this study, one of eight rougher circuit rows was selected and evaluated. The floatability tests were performed to compare the flotation behaviour of rougher feed and mixture of concentrate of the last five cells with rougher feed in the laboratory scale by a tree analysis process. The results showed that mixing of rougher last five cell concentrate with feed has a detrimental effect on flotation efficiency that leads to a 3% decrease in recovery. Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

The key driver for choosing a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler is the ability to burn a wide range of fuels with highly efficient combustion while meeting low emission requirements. Reduced sorbent and water consumption compared with pulverized coal (PC) plants and the ability to deal with corrosive fuel constituents while still meeting local regulations make a CFB boiler-based power plant particularly attractive. CFB-based power generation is particularly relevant in coal mining areas. During mining, a portion of the roof and floor material may be extracted along with the coal seam in order to create adequate working height for the equipment and miners. Therefore, run-of-mine coal which comes directly from the mine contains impurities. The raw coal can undergo a washing or screening process in order to improve its quality by reducing the ash content in the fuel in order to sell it on the export market or to comply with domestic customer requirements. The coal discarded from the washing process usually has a high ash content and difficult mechanical properties resulting from the initial properties, the mining, and the coal cleaning processes. It can contain a large volume of stones or can be very fine as a result of the washing treatment. To create value from burning this discarded coal, the boiler supplier has to meet several technical challenges in developing the appropriate design. This paper highlights the performance achieved with Alstom's CFB boilers developed for power generation over the last two decades to extract value from discarded coals. Emile Huchet Power Plant is the first 125 MWe CFB unit developed for burning coal slurries (called schlamms in France). The Emile Huchet discarded coal fuel is a very fine high-ash residue with an average particle diameter by mass (d50) of around 80 µm as received from the washing plant. The paper describes the performances and the basic design of the CFB boiler to manage such a fine fuel. The performances of two other CFBs of approximately 300 MWe output in operation in the USA and PR China are also mentioned to demonstrate the capability of this technology to burn either low-volatile bituminous or anthracite waste coals. The significant issues experienced during commissioning are reported, and the conceptual choices for burning such fuels are mentioned.

A powerful, interactive metallurgical process simulator for use on micro- computers has been developed in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. MICROSIM presently allows simulation of all ore-dressing flowsheets and a selection of hydrometallurgical unit operations, and is extendable to all such processes. MICROSIM is written in Pascal. This modern language provides very versatile data structures which can be effectively used to solve the major problem in generalised simulation programs, namely storage and transmission of data relating to liquid and solid phases. Dynamic memory allocation allows optimal utilisation of computer storage space. The simulator utilises very efficient precalculation algorithms that determine the tear streams for optimal sequential modulator calculation convergence. Microcomputer graphics simplifies flowsheet specification, and form-filling data capture with supplied default values eliminate most common input errors.

The compilation of the sampling nomogram is an essential tool in the optimization of a sampling protocol and allows the operator to track the change in relative variance of the sampling error (the Fundamental Sampling Error) during steps of comminution and mass reduction in the process of recovery of the aliquot for analysis. The data required for the compilation of the nomogram are centered on the sampling constant K and the exponent, alpha (a), of the nominal fragment size. Five methods for establishing K have been identified, but two of them, the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) method and the heterogeneity test (HT) method purport to provide such a constant. The step by step procedure for each of these two methods was examined using broken ores from three mines, Mponeng mine, Kloof mine and Lily mine. Two of these mines (Mponengand Kloof) are typical Witwatersrand-type gold mines, while the third is an Archaean-type, shear related gold deposit situated in the Barberton Greenstone belt. The results suggest that the factor K derived using the heterogeneity test is very accurate, but applies only to a single size fraction in the spectrum of comminuted materials. The calculation of gold grain sizes using this method appears to be too small and does not conform with the results from detailed mineralogical studies. The factors K and alpha derived using the duplicate series analysis, are appropriate for use across a wide spectrum of comminution sizes and also provide realistic gold grain sizes, comparable with the equivalent circular diameter of gold grains identified in mineralogical studies of the ores.

The paper reviews the tapping process and the major wear mechanisms on the tap-hole, including wear from tapping tools. Measured temperatures in different tap-holes are related to choice of binder and material for repair pastes. The strength and disadvantage of carbon and silicon carbide materials are compared. Normal daily and weekly maintenance of tapholes is described, together with the major repairs that are done during longer furnace shutdowns. The objective is to show that the type of repair and repair material needs to be adapted to each individual furnace.

Platinum production in Southern Africa amounted to 80% of world production in 2005with a small increase from 5 117 000 ounces to 5 275 000 ounces. For the seventh consecutive year the platinum market is on course to record a moderate deficit in supply. This is reflected in the price increase from a trading range US$860 to US$880 in June 2005 to an excess of US$1 200 in September 2006. Southern Africa, with its extensive platinum reserves, will continue to be the dominant platinum producer and has a number of new mines in an advanced stage of planning. The slogan ?Platinum Surges Ahead? was selected to describe the exciting and vibrantnature of all aspects of platinum mining, beneficiation and marketing. This conference will cover these aspects from exploration and orebody delineation, through mine design, development and operation to mine closure; mineral beneficiation, marketing and compliance with the Mining Charter will also be subjects for discussion and debate. It is also anticipated that the issue of overall increases in productivity, through the introduction of technology, will demonstrate Southern Africa?s status as a premier mining district. It is my pleasure to welcome delegates from abroad and locally, on behalf of the SAIMM, to the Second International Platinum Conference ?Platinum Surges Ahead?. I trust that you will find the proceedings informative and value adding and will participate in the discussions and debate in order to obtain maximum benefit from the conference. I am sure that the post-conference tours will be interesting and of great benefit to participants. Finally, a big word of thanks to the members of the Organising Committee, the management and staff of the SAIMM, and to our willing sponsors, without all of whom this conference would not have been possible.

Dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) sorting is a recent development in the range of sensor-based sorting technologies available today. DE-XRT is particularly suitable for dry coarse coal beneficiation in the size range -120 mm +12 mm. In this paper, we describe the technology and show the results of a number of test runs conducted on different types of coal from the USA and South Africa. The results have shown that DE-XRT is an effective technology not only for deshaling of coal and removing pyritic sulphur but also for separating coal and torbanite. The use of dry deshaling methods will be more important as water availability becomes a greater concern. DE-XRT is one such technology which will be incorporated in future dry coal processing plants.

Mineral processing efficiency depends on various factors and among them includes head grade fluctuations feeding the processing plant. Head grades can fluctuate beyond an admissible range, implying in recovery decrease for the mineral of interest. Grades feeding the processing plant depend on the geological domain which is being mined and on the mining schedule. Therefore, it is necessary to keep grade variability controlled. Blending piles are an efficient alternative to reduce grade fluctuations. The main factors influencing blending efficiency are the pile size or its mass and the number of layers used to pile up. Large piles are more efficient to reduce variability, however, there are economical and operational limits associated with them. This study investigates a methodology to analyse the ideal pile size to reach an acceptable variability given the in situ grade fluctuations. Geostatistical simulations provide the means to assess grade variability using an optimized mining schedule. These block grades are used to simulate any given pile throughout the mine`s life. The methodology was illustrated using a case study to control coal ash content at a mine supplying ROM coal to a power plant. Keywords: homogenization, piles, geostatistical simulation.

The BIOX® process was developed for the biological pre-treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates ahead of conventional cyanide leach gold recovery. Rights to the process are currently with BIOMIN Technologies SA, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited. There are currently eight operating installations worldwide employing the process on a commercial scale. EKATO is a company specializing in developing new or optimizing existing mixing applications. EKATO has acquired a vast amount of expertise in agitation over its 75 year history. In a joint research project the reactors of the BIOX® process were characterized from the aspect of their mixing performance. BIOMIN is constantly testing new mixing solutions and reviewing potential vendors to increase the efficiency of the BIOX® process. EKATO?s intention was to qualify as an approved vendor for supplying agitation equipment to the BIOX® process. A two step approach was planned: In phase one of the project EKATO would develop an alternative agitation solution to the established option, exhibiting at least similar performance levels. In phase two potential possibilities to improve the overall design would be developed. This paper focuses on phase one and addresses the systematic approach applied by EKATO in characterizing the mixing processes. Mixing tasks were assessed individually applying basic theory and scale-up and -down rules to the individual tasks. Testing with model systems was done at the EKATO technology center in Schopfheim, Germany, on scales of 50 liters and 1 m³. The results showed that the ISOJET-B impeller design showed promising performance under BIOX® reactor conditions. Scale-up with the ISOJET-B was done in order to apply it in the 21 m³ live volume test reactor at Fairview mine in South Africa. At Fairview tests were performed using model systems and eventually under real plant conditions with BIOX® slurries. The results were a success and confirmed that the scale-up factors determined during the testing at EKATO?s technology center could be substantiated in the ?model scale? 25 m³ reactor. Testing under the actual process conditions showed that all design parameters were within the desired range to be considered an excellent leaching performance. This successful joint development shows the importance of a close cooperation of technology licensors or end-users and equipment suppliers. It is vital for understanding all factors influencing the mixing performance of processes. Exercises such as this will provide equipment suppliers and plant operators more confidence in managing further scale ups at ever larger engineered plants.

Considerable practical knowledge and effective use of empirical evidence is required in the design of tunnel support systems. In many instances, it is unclear how individual support elements interact with fractured rock and which elements of the support system are critical in controlling and containing the movement of material proximate to the excavation. The present paper outlines a displacement discontinuity approach that allows the coupling of surface constraints, in the form of liner or mesh material, to an explicit representation of time-dependent rock discontinuity creep movements. The method is illustrated for a simple square-shaped tunnel profile in which the fracture zone is mobilized by an imposed stress field. A crucial aspect of the model is the computational treatment of the coupling between the liner material and there presentation of the fractured rock mass. This allows the response of the liner material to be assessed quantitatively in terms of the possible reduction of movement in the rock mass. The importance of installing the liner timeously after the excavation is formed is illustrated in a specific example. A number of computational difficulties in simulating liner-rock interaction mechanisms are identified.

Metso Minerals Cisa have developed VisiofrothTM - a system which calculates parameters of the froth surface using vision from remote cameras mounted about individual flotation cells. The parameters calculated from this system can be utilised within process control strategies to achieve stabilisation or optimisation of the flotation process. As part of a JKMRC AMIRA P9 field campaign, froth vision was collected from various cells operated at different air rates and froth depths within Rio Tinto's Northparkes copper roughing and scavenging circuit. At the same time, samples were collected to determine the cell metallurgical performance at each operating condition. These froth images have been processed using the VisiofrothTM system with froth velocity, bubble size, froth collapse rate and various froth colour parameters calculated. These parameters have been compared to the measured concentrate flow and concentrate grade produced at each condition. This analysis shows that the concentrate tonnage flow is strongly correlated with froth velocity whereas the concentrate grade is best correlated using froth velocity in combination with a bubble stability parameter which affects the bubble size distribution on the top surface of the froth. This paper summarises the results from this analysis as well as an overview of the VisiofrothTM system and the parameters that are measured by the software.

The purpose of the project was to conduct a feasibility study to determine if the current operating bottom dump trucks that haul coal should be replaced with rear dump trucks. The engineering availability of the bottom dump trucks was lower than targeted while the operating costs are the highest of all coal haulers within the Anglo Coal opencasts. To determine if it is feasible to replace the current bottom dump trucks with rear dump trucks, a production profile simulation was conducted to determine the number of rear dump trucks that would be required to meet the annual coal hauling requirements. The total capital and operating costs of these rear dump trucks were also determined using a total cost of ownership model. These were compared with the current costs of the bottom dump trucks to determine if it is financially feasible to replace the bottom dump trucks with rear dump trucks. Having considered the capital outlay that would be required to replace the bottom dump trucks with rear dump trucks as well as their respective operating costs, it was concluded that the current bottom dump trucks should be replaced with rear dump trucks. Other factors were considered in coming to this conclusion.
