Copper remains one of the most sought-after metals in the industry. Tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that occur in pyrite copper, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores are an additional reserve for increasing technological parameters of flotation. Pyrite mass (85% and more) has similar flotation properties to other sulfide minerals, and imperfection of reagent regime is a common problem that occurs during quality copper concentrate processing. Due to tennantite's and chalcopyrite's differences in flotation properties with butyl xanthate at pH > 10, tennantite often reports to the flotation tails. Hight alkalinity of the medium increases the oxidation level of sulfide minerals, thus increasing the concentration of S2O3 2-, SO3 2- SO4 2-. At processing facilities in the Russian Federation, the concentration of thiosulfate ions in pulp is in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 g/l and higher, which leads to a decrease in flotation activity of the tennantite. The effect of butyl xanthate (as standard), thionocarbamate, dithiophosphate and M-TF (a mixture of dithiophosphate and thionocarbamate) on monomineral (tennantite and pyrite) flotation in the presence of sodium thiosulfate was studied. The variable parameters of the "thiosulfate-collector" flotation complex were thiosulfate concentration (100-900); pH (8-12,5). The scientific methods included contact angle for hydration assessment; TEM for surface studies; UV spectroscopy and iodometric titration for solubility control. Comprehensive studies have established a connection between the concentration of thiosulfate ions and tennantite flotation selectivity. Flotation activity of tennantite is higher at pH 8 with a thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l. Pyrite remains active with butyl xanthate under the same conditions. TEM images of the surface films of the collectors on pyrite were acquired at pH 8. The MTF provides the biggest difference in adsorption, wettability and flotation activity between tennantite and pyrite at pH 8 and thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l, in comparison with butyl xanthate. The results of the research will be applied to improve selective reagent regimes of tennantite minerals flotation. The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should be of sufficient high standard and contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Their publication should be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to mining and industry. Authors must realize that because a mine shaft is new or the mine itself is newly established, this in itself does not justify a paper unless significantly new techniques or processes were involved in the opening-up procedure. A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of less well chosen material. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Papers should be submitted at least three months prior to the intended date of presentation. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of foolscap paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 11-inches, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Galley proofs are sent to the authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. ORTHODOX SEQUENCE Title and author's name together with author's degrees, titles and position Summary, abstract or synopsis Introduction Development of the main substance Conclusions References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H. Authors' & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rulesfor Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarily known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. Generally: Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unamiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parenthesis ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991 and proof correction symbols in British Standard 1219C. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. ft for foot and feet, lb for pound and pounds. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. Likewise ft and in. should be used, x' y" only being permissible in diagrams and plans. Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 6 in. wide. Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, II, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the margin of the typescript where drawings and diagrams, etc. are to appear in the text. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. SUMMARY ABSTRACT OR SYNOPSIS It is most important that the summary should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTESAND REFERENCES Footnotes should be resorted to only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus . . .1 . . . 2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal.

"X-ray transmission (XRT) sorting has become the preferred recovery technology option in several parts of the diamond-winning flow sheet. In the De Beers Group, applications of XRT are found across kimberlite, alluvial, and marine operations. This is the result of intensive R&D conducted over the years to arrive at a suite of machine embodiments capable of sorting and auditing diamonds across all size ranges.The first applications in the marine environment used the technology in an auditing mode, and served as a useful early predictor of diamond content weeks ahead of sorthouse returns. The same machines are now available with ejection capability to produce high final product grades. The next application was tests on coarse alluvial gravels as an alternative to dense medium separation. The results were very encouraging, and tests are planned for both green- and brownfield kimberlite environments, as well as to explore an alternative to conventional techniques in final diamond recovery. At the Jwaneng mine Large Diamond Pilot Plant (LDPP), the objective is to recover diamonds in the size fraction –45 +25 mm.The technical challenge remains in the finer sizes, for high-capacitymachines as direct alternatives to conventional diamond recovery technologies. This is an area of ongoing R&D and it is only a matter of time before the breakthrough emerges. X-ray transmission fundementalsXRT makes use of X-ray imaging techniques to analyse objects and materials, and has a wide range of applications from baggage scanning for security purposes (Martz et al., 2016), to recycling of waste material (Owada, 2014). During the last decade XRT has been applied to an increasing extent in the minerals processing industry (von Ketelhodt and Bergmann, 2010; Sasman, Deetlefs, and van der Westhuyzen, 2018). Dual-energy XRT (DE-XRT), in which images of the target material are obtained at both high and low Xray energies, allows for elemental analysis and therefore can be used to discriminate between various minerals.A DE-XRT system makes use of a dualenergy X-ray line scan sensor to generate images of transmitted X-rays (Figure 1). Dualenergy refers to the camera, which contains two sensors, one responding to low-energy Xrays and one to high-energy X-rays. Feed material can be imaged either while on the belt, or while in flight."

Dr. K. Gebhard In his excellent and comprehensive survey on the future development of the Iron and Steel Industry in South Africa, Mr. Coetzee has also mentioned the direct reduction processes as a possible method of converting iron ore to iron. Mr. Coetzee has made it quite clear that at this stage one should not consider these processes as a 'magic formula' which herald a 'break through'. I agree entirely with this point of view. Once upon a time I held the opposite view, but in the meantime I have revised my views. To do so, I had 40 years at my disposal. In 1930 I had the privilege of being connected with the first commercial sponge iron plant in Germany1 - a plant which was capable of producing 40 tons of sponge iron a day. We were determined to prove that the blast furnace would become obsolete in the near future. We considered it as an unnecessary detour to convert iron ore first into an iron-carbon alloy, which contained further quite a number of undesirable elements, and to remove this carbon by an endothermic process. Direct iron-making seemed to be a logical short cut. Unfortunately, we were not able to establish this 'short cut,', but the life of our sponge iron plant was cut short. We had solved all technical but not the economic problems. Basically the positon is still the same today - mainly economic and to a lesser degree technological aspects determine the rate at which sponge iron plants are installed. More has been said and written than done about direct reduction plants. I think that there are two main reasons for this stagnation in the introduction of direct reduction processes. The first reason is that modern blast furnaces are just too good and too economic ever to be replaced by direct reduction processes on a large scale. This, of course, already limits the field of application for direct reduction plants. The second reason is that sponge iron production and utilisation is based on technical considerations, which increase not only the production cost of sponge iron but also the conversion cost to steel to such an extent that under special conditions only are direct reduction plants an economic proposition. PREFACE During the past year, the Council of the SAIMM undertook a major strategic-planning exercise to review all its current activities, and to redefine its scope and objectives in the light of changing circumstances. The following are the four main concerns that prompted Council to take stock of the situation. (1) Over the past five years, the SAIMM has become heavily involved in a variety of new activities. (There are many examples, of which the expansion in book publications and the establishment of physical metallurgy as a third major discipline with its own colloquia and schools are perhaps the most important.) While these new activities have considerably broadened the SAIMM's scope, they have resulted in a significant increase in the day-to-day workload of the President, Office Bearers, and Council members, and of the secretarial staff based at Kelvin House.

South African technikons The six autonomous colleges for advanced technical education in South Africa were established in terms of the Advanced Technical Education Act (Act 40 of 1967). However, since the inception of these colleges, it has become clear that members of the public find the name difficult to use and to remember. The symposium has as its main objective consideration of those minerals that may pose problems of availability in the United Kingdom. INCOME TAX: POST-GRADUATE STUDY COURSE CONCESSION As a result of representations made by the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of S.A. and the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, engineers and scientists will now be allowed to deduct expenses incurred on post-graduate study courses from their taxable income. The conditions of this concession are set out in section 16 of the Income Tax Act, 1969, which reads as follows: 16. (1) The following section is hereby substituted for section 16 of the principal Act: 16. "Notwithstanding the provisions of section 23(a) and (b), there shall be allowed to be deducted from the income of any person who is a dentist or medical practitioner or practises any profession referred to in paragraph (a), so much as the Secretary may allow of any expenditure incurred by such person in the circumstances contemplated in paragraph (c), if the Dental Association of South Africa in the case of a dentist, or the Medical Association of South Africa in the case of a medical practitioner, or the "Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns" or the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa in any other case, certifies in such form as the Secretary may prescribe that such person- (a) if he is not a dentist or medical practitioner, is the holder of a degree in engineering or allied technology or natural sciences awarded by a recognized university on completion of a prescribed minimum period of study of not less than four academic years or the equivalent thereof and enabling the holder thereof to practise the profession of an engineer or a profession for which advanced and specialised scientific knowledge is required which relates directly to- (i) the development or exploitation of natural resources; (ii) mining or prospecting for minerals; (iii) the production of pastoral, agricultural or forest produce ; (iv) the breeding or care of farm animals; (v) any industrial process; or (vi) the training of specialists in any branch of science or technology connected with any aforementioned profession; (b) has practised his profession for not less than three years; and (c) has incurred such expenditure during the year of assessment in respect of the attendance by him of any postgraduate study course approved by such body to improve his qualifications for carrying on his profession in the Republic". (2) The amendments effected by subsection (1) shall first take effect in respect of assessments for the year of assessment ending on the twenty-eighth day of February, 1970. From this section it is clear that the concession will only be granted if the application is accompanied by a certificate, which certificate must be either signed by the Chairman of Die Akademie or the President of the Associated Societies. In terms of the authority granted such certificates must certify that: (i) the taxpayer concerned has practised his profession for not less than three years; (ii) the expenditure was incurred by the taxpayer during the year of assessment indicated in the certificate; (iii) the expenditure was incurred by the taxpayer in respect of the attendance by him of a post-graduate study course approved by the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa or Die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, as the case may be, to improve his qualifications for carrying on his profession in South Africa; (iv) the taxpayer is the holder of a degree in engineering or allied technology or natural sciences, which degree was awarded by a recognized university,

The theory of geostatistics covers a branch of .applied statistics aimed at a mathematical description and analysis of geological observations. Geostatistics can be used in pure geology (for example, for the analysis of trace elements in a metamorphic rock), in mineral exploration (for example, for the analysis of geochemical exploration data), as well as in mine valuation. This book is intended to provide a practical introduction to the theory of geostatistical methods of mineral evaluation. Over the years, various mathematical models have been developed to represent the distribution of values in mineral deposits. The simpler models are based on the assumption that the values are randomly distributed. Classical statistical methods, based on this assumption of the random distribution of values, are used to analyse mineral deposits to which these models apply or are assumed to apply. In all mineral deposits, however, one recognizes the presence of areas where the values are higher or lower than elsewhere. Also, the values of two samples in a mineral deposit are more likely to be similar if the samples are taken close together than if they are taken far apart. This indicates that there exists a degree of correlation between sample values, and that this correlation is a function of the distance between the samples. Models have been developed which take this correlation into consideration, with the degree of correlation between sample values being usually measured by the semivariogram function. In these models the fact that two samples taken next to each other will most probably not have the same value, must also be considered; even for very short distances the correlations are usually not perfect and a purely random component is present in the value distribution. The mathematical models will therefore assume the presence of two sources of variability in the values: a correlated component and a random component. Finally, one must consider the particular and very common case of mineral deposits in which the values present a systematic variation in space. This variation is usually referred to as a drift, or a trend. For example, the grade of an ore body may increase with depth of the ore, or it may decrease when one moves away from a central volcanic pipe. The earlier models did not give a satisfactory representation of drifts, and more complex models have been developed, in which three sources of variation are represented. These models are made up of: a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. The deterministic component is used as a model of the drift. The correlated component explains regular changes in values which are not represented by the drift. The random component represents variations which cannot be explained by any of the above factors. The simpler models, based on the assumption of a single random component, will be described first (Chapter 2). The models based on the hypothesis of the superimposition of a correlated component on a random component, will then be analysed in detail. These models are most commonly used in the analysis of mineral deposits (Chapters 3-1 I). Finally, how to deal with the presence of a drift will be briefly described (Chapter 12). This book has been written essentially for students in mining engineering and for mining engineers who are interested in the background to the theory of geostatistics as well as its practical applications. The assumption is made that the reader has an elementary knowledge of statistics. Some knowledge of linear algebra is useful in part of Chapter 9, and is necessary to read Chapter 12. A proof is given of all the equations related to geostatistics, and which are not usually found in elementary textbooks on statistics. Understanding of these proofs is not necessary for practical application of the theory, and the reader may wish to skip them on a first reading, concentrating attention on the numerous simple practical examples given. Although the theoretical geostatistician will not find much new material in this publication, it is anticipated that he will develop some interest in the practical approach chosen to prove the various geostatistical equations. Krige and the Anglo Transvaal Consolidated In- vestment Company Limited, who gave me the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time working on geostatistical problems, both theoretical and practical, during the time that I was in their employment. The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy mourns the passing of one of its most distinguished sons. Professor J. de V. SYNOPSIS Two pilot plants operating on different types of carbon were used to generate steady-state adsorption data in the treatment of gold-plant solutions of high and low tenor. A pilot plant comprising three 4 m long columns and using 3 mm extruded activated carbon was used to treat pregnant solutions with a gold concentration of 5 to 8 g/t at pH 10 to 11,5. Column influent was pumped at a super¬ficial flow velocity of 0,5 m/min while the carbon was moved daily so as to effect gold loadings on the carbon of 5 to 10 k /t. With a carbon-bed depth of 12 m, an adsorption efficiency of 99,9 per cent was obtained in a bed depth of 9 m, which was subsequently reduced to 8 m when the depth of the carbon bed was reduced to 8 m. This improvement in efficiency was attributed to the reduced residence time of the carbon from 12 to 8 days. A corresponding decrease in adsorbed silica indicated that some silica fouling of the carbon had occurred. A second pilot plant, comprising a single column 6 m in length and using coconut-shell carbon of 1,0 to 2,4 mm, treated a solution with a gold concentration of 0,7 g/t at pH 8,0. Feed solution was pumped at a superficial flow velocity of 1,0 m/min while carbon was moved every 8 hours to give gold loadings of more than 5 kg/t. An adsorp¬tion efficiency of 99,5 per cent was indicated at steady state. Intermittent washing of the column with dilute hydrochloric acid was shown to have a beneficial effect on the gold adsorption and to reduce the pressure drop across the column. Intermittent washing with dilute sulphuric acid indicated that there had been some passivation of the car¬bon during the treatment of a solution with a gold concentration of only 0,2 g/t. Compared with other adsorption systems, the countercurrent moving bed appears to offer significant advantages in terms of metallurgical efficiency and capital investment. The inability normally associated with moving-bed systems to treat solutions containing suspended solids may be overcome to a degree by the use of relatively coarse extrud¬ed carbon.

The in-service degradation of the mechanical properties of steel components through the damage mechanism of high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA), is a topic of concern in the refining and green hydrogen industry. This damage mechanism occurs in susceptible steels operating in environments at high temperatures and hydrogen pressures. The current investigation deals with the indirect monitoring of mechanical degradation via tracking of the swelling strain in affected structures. An autoclave with an AISI 316 shell was utilized to simulate accelerated HTHA damage at 550 °C and 46 bar for exposure times ranging from zero to 700 hours. The progress of the HTHA damage was tracked using encapsulated high-temperature strain gauges. The correlation between the swelling strain and mechanical property degradation was studied to develop a methodology for the continuous monitoring of embrittlement. The tensile sample orientation of the carbon steel plate was included as a variable, i.e., samples parallel, transverse, or perpendicular to the plate rolling direction were included, since it has been shown that the sample orientation influences the HTHA damage features. For the through-thickness orientation, and upon exceeding a threshold value of exposure time, all tensile properties were severely degraded, with values in the order of a 90 per cent reduction being observed. It was found that the degradation of carbon steel mechanical properties can be correlated to the swelling strain measured during exposure. The critical point for mechanical property degradation in the plate through-thickness orientation, whereafter a severe decrease in the ductility of the material occurs, was found to be in the order of 1% of the total swelling strain measured during exposure, equivalent to 65 microstrain. This threshold was found to be significantly lower than that expected from the literature, where limits of 400 to 1000 microstrain were postulated.

Kriging estimates of geological resources are sometimes conditionally biased because the kriging plan contains too few samples. This may be done purposely in order to match the variance of the estimates to the true block dispersion variance. This work aims at evaluating the influence of conditional bias over the ultimate optimum pit design in relation to its shape, size and NPV (Net Present Value of profits). It has been restricted to two real case studies: a ‘carrot shaped’ gold porphyry in northern Greece and a manto-typeexotic copper deposit located in northern Chile. The methodology applied to each deposit consisted of generating a ‘real block model’ and four resource estimates by the use of conditional simulation and the application of four different kriging plans to the drillhole databases respectively. The estimation models vary in smoothness and conditional bias. Ultimate optimum pits were determined for the ‘real’ and the four different kriging models. Pit comparisons lead to the following conclusions: •In the worst case, conditional bias overestimated the project's NPV by 32% and 5% for the gold and copper deposits respectively. •The overestimation of high grades is more relevant than the underestimation of low grades. This resulted in a tonnage over-extraction of 148% and 1% for the gold and copper deposit respectively. This difference was attributable to the vastly different geometry of the deposits. •The smoothing effect of kriging, without or very little conditional bias, produced open pits that were different to the ‘true’ (ideal) ones and furthermore, underestimated the project's NPV by 10% and 6% for the gold and the copper deposits respectively. •Other factors that influence the optimum open pit design and to some extent control the effect of conditional bias are: the cut-off grade, the orebody geometry and distribution of grades within it and the amount of over-burden.
