(Illinois) (Genoot) Although the industrial physiologist can still be regarded as a rarity in South African industry, it is obvious that he could make a positive contribution to the control of air pollution. For the past twenty-two years, the gold-mining industry has invoked the aid of industrial physiologists in solving various problems that continually crop up in the more effective and safer utilization of man-power. Air pollution is only one facet that has received attention. It can be stated emphatically that other industries could gain many advantages from the employment of this type of specialist. Because of inadequate opportunities for academic training, however, the industrial physiologists available might not be enough to fill all the possible posts in industry at present, but confidence is expressed that interested persons will soon be able to follow a full university course in this field of study.

These effects were investigated in batch flotation studies, and by the measurement of rest and pulp potentials. At Iow additions of sulphurous acid as the pH regulator, flotation rate increased with increasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen. The recovery of chalcopyrite dropped significantly below a pH value of about 6,5 at 25 p.p.m. of dissolved oxygen, and below a pH value of about 6 at a dissolved-oxygen concentration of 8,2 p.p.m. The rest and pulp potentia Is measured indicated that dixanthogen is the dominant species formed on chalcopyrite surfaces during flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate. The results suggested that the same species might have formed on galena surfaces in the pulp after the ore had been milled in a ceramic mill under nitrogen. Increased additions of sulphurous, sulphuric, and hydrochloric acids increased the rest potentia Is, while the addition of sodium sulphite decreased these potentials.

The mathematical framework of a well-established model proposed earlier by the authors for the screening process is briefly recalled. Some numerical methods for the application of the model, concerning numerical solution of the equations and parameter estimation, are indicated. Some applications of the model to improve screening operations, sizing of screen, simulation of screening and of integrated plant operations are discussed, and the computer software to be used for these purposes is described in detail.

The application of kriging in assessing the area rainfall in a weather modification experiment is complicated by the presence of many zero rainfall recordings on a given day, and the fact that the variograms seem to be quite different for the rainfall on different days. Indicator variograms are shown to be directly related to two sets of conditional probabilities. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa advocates the importance of sustainable economic development and justifiable environmental consciousness by business. The government needs to ensure that every citizen of the Republic has access to an environment that is protected, pollution free, and sustainable by enacting certain regulations. However, there are more than 5 700 derelict and unrehabilitated mines of all types in South Africa. Former asbestos operations were among the first to be targeted for clean-up under the programme instituted by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), owing to the proven direct impact of asbestos pollution on health. This paper seeks to investigate the challenges faced by the coal sector as far as mine rehabilitation and closure is concerned. For the purpose of this paper rehabilitation is defined as per the Chamber of Mines Rehabilitation Guidelines publication, which defines rehabilitation as putting the land impacted by mining activities back to a sustainable and usable condition. Some of the current rehabilitation challenges are technical skills (know-how), leadership focus, poor planning, cost saving initiatives, and the government's lack of capacity to enforcement rehabilitation requirements. It is imperative that mining companies identify rehabilitation as a critical strategic pillar that directly influences license to operate. The case study evidence indicates that relevant policies, appointment of accountable people, sufficient leadership support, and the correct choice of rehabilitation equipment can assist to improve the rehabilitation and land management challenge.

The production of ferrochrome alloy from chromium bearing chromite ores is conducted at high temperature under highly reducing conditions. However, albeit completely unintended, it is impossible to completely exclude oxygen from all high temperature process steps, with the corresponding possibility arising for the generation of small amounts of Cr(VI) species. Certain Cr(VI) species are regarded as a carcinogenic, with specifically airborne exposure to these Cr(VI) species being associated with cancer of the respiratory system. With approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore reserves located in South Africa, and annual ferrochrome production approaching almost half of total annual global output, aspects of Cr(VI) generation and control are of particular relevance and importance to the local industry, and naturally to the global industry at large. This paper seeks to examine theoretical and practical aspects associated with Cr(VI)generation (based largely on experience within the local South African industry, but considered to be generally encountered in the broader global industry context), together with mitigating measures that can be applied within the context of the production processes. From the discussions it is clear that significant improvements in various Cr(VI)-related aspects have been made by the South African ferrochrome industry. However, it is also evident that several areas of uncertainty still exist, which require further research in order to better quantify risks and enhance the efficacy of mitigating steps. In the wake of the financial crisis that affected world markets in 2002, there has been an increasing international focus on corporate governance. Various corporate governance codes of practice have been introduced, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the USA, the Combined Code in the UK, and King III in South Africa. This focus on corporate governance has increased since the most recent financial crisis in 2008, the effects of which are still being felt world-wide. In the mining and minerals industry, reliable metal accounting is essential to sound corporate governance and is also becoming a focus of increased attention and concern, particularly as the figures generated by the metal accounting system feed directly into the financial accounts of mining companies. Mass measurement, sampling, and analysis provide the input data for the metal accounting system and sound corporate governance requires that the procedures used are based on best practice and that the data generated is accurate and handled correctly, transparently, and consistently to produce the accounting reports. The AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has been widely adopted in the industry as a means to achieve this, and the compilers of the Code have conducted numerous metal accounting audits at operations, both in South Africa and abroad. It is difficult to evaluate exploration properties in a manner that is transparent, repeatable and easily re-calculated to cater for different geological interpretations, but the risk-based assessment methodology, the Geological Risk Method, developed and described by Lord et al (2001) attempts to satisfy all these criteria. This paper examines a case study example based on valuations of exploration projects conducted by SRK Consulting using this methodology, and describes some of the advantages and limitations of the method.

SYNOPSIS This paper demonstrates that the horizontal stresses induced by the creation of a tabular scope in a single mining step are always tensile at the centre of the stope span, but that compressive stresses are actively generated in hangingwalls and footwalls during sequential mining. A stress-distribution mechanism is introduced, and is used to explain the results for elastic behaviour, and for inelastic behaviour both during a single mining step and during multiple mining steps.

Austenitic manganese-steel castings are very widely used in crushing and grinding in the' gold-mining industry in South Africa, The service life of a casting in a short-head crusher is difficult to predict because there are no clear-cut criteria by which such a judgement can be made, The addition of molybdenum and zirconium to the castings for crushers failed to result in improved performance, The results of extensive tests with through-hardened steel castings were very disappointing, mainly because of a design factor in the bowl liner. The design of the bowl liner is an important determinant of the life and performance of these castings. The extent to which the material in a crusher is reduced in size has profound effects on the consumption of metal and power, and on the effective life of a casting. Tests on manganese-steel castings in an 8 ft by 12 ft rod mill provided data on the total consumption of metal, and on the variations in the pattern and rates of wear of liners over lengthy periods. Progressive changes in the wear profiles of the lifter bars and the other liner components showed unexpected features. There are clear indications that, whereas a set of lifter bars will at first lift the charge strongly with relatively little slippage, there is a later period characterized by more slippage and greater wear on all the liner components.

The calculation of resource volumes for large mineral sands deposits is the process of systematically compiling all known data in order to define the volume of ore contained and its intrinsic economic value. Traditionally, this process has been highly speculative in nature, as the variability of the layer thickness, even between closely spaced, boreholes can be highly variable. The issue of horizon continuity is of critical importance in mine modelling and resource definition. Accurate volume estimates are difficult to derive from drilling data alone, as the borehole spacing of an economically viable drilling programme is often greater than the spatial frequency of the variations in profile thickness. The limitations associated with this inferential approach to resource estimation can be mitigated through the use of newly developed ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods, thereby maximizing orebody optimization by reducing contamination and orebody loss. The use of GPR in the mining industry has historically been limited to shallow, high-resolution applications, such as the location of voids in limestone or the mapping of paleo channels for alluvial gold and diamonds (Francke and Yelf, 2003). These limitations have not been technology based, but rather market based, as the vast majority of GPR systems were originally designed for civil engineering applications. A new generation of GPR technology, designed specifically for maximum penetration in sand environments, is now being developed. This technology has been trialled extensively at the Richards Bay Minerals heavy mineral sand deposit in South Africa with optimistic results. The clay base of the mineral sands has been imaged to some 120 metres. Further equipment refinements are expected to yield even deeper profiling and higher resolution. The resolution offered by this technology is unique, allowing individual depositional sequences to be imaged and modelled in three dimensions. This paper will discuss the advances in GPR technology relevant to the mineral sands industry, as well as methods to optimize and integrate GPR data into existing mine models. Also addressed will be approaches to three-dimensional modelling of high-resolution GPR data and subsequent volume estimations.

Despite economic law and policy instruments with righteous intentions, the politics of resource nationalism could render these instruments unworkable. South Africa is a case in point. After the establishment of democracy, the country's outdated law and policy framework was replaced with a modern system, and in many respects an exemplary one. Converting the privately-owned mineral right system into a scheme of state custodianship allowed for several resource nationalism instruments, in addition to a resources royalty structure that first, compensates for the loss of a non-renewable resource; second, provides for optimal resource use through encouraging value addition to mineral production; and third, effectively targets economic rents. However, despite these improvements, the country went through a process of fierce debate on whether or not mines should be nationalized: the debate was fuelled by public anger with claims of political non-delivery. The result was considerable noise because of public unawareness of facts and distortion of the facts in political rhetoric. The purpose of this article is, first, to establish the status of resource nationalism in South Africa's mineral and fiscal frameworks; second, to give an opinion on the findings of the African National Congress's document on state intervention (Maximising the Developmental Impact of the People's Mineral Assets: State Intervention in the Minerals Sector (SIMS), 2012); and third, to fruitfully contribute to the fundamental discussion on how South Africans benefit from their mineral riches. The methodology is to start with explaining resource nationalism as an international issue for the extractive industries; then to offer an overview of existing resource nationalism instruments in South Africa-along with their effectiveness in attracting rents and investment. The major finding is that South Africa has resource nationalism firmly ingrained in its current suite of instruments. However, it is necessary to address the perceptions of bad governance, and above all, maintain the stability of the rules governing mineral development in South Africa.

Contribution by J.S. Kuijpers* Kirsten's paper discusses the potential for seismic activity on faults in relation to depth, span, stope support, and discontinuity strength, and puts forward some explicit conclusions. Quoting from the author, the main conclusions are as follows, together with my comments. Author's reply The author gratefully acknowledges the contribution to his paper. It provides further elucidation to the very complex problem of quantifying the effects of mining-induced seismicity. The mechanical behaviour of rock under seismic excitation has been sadly neglected over the past twenty years, during which attention was almost exclusively focused on the study of the spatial location of seismic events. It is to be lamented that, on the eve of South Africa's movement to significantly greater depths of mining, so little quantities information is known about the mechanical effects of seismicity. It is a challenge at this stage to make up for this lapse in knowledge in the shortest possible time.

As part of its programme to develop methods for concentrating minerals underground, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in conjunction with Lurgi evolved and tested a I MW centrifugal mill. The machine is capable, in the autogenous mode, of grinding more than 25 t/h of minus 75 plus 44 mm hard quartzite to a minus 3 mm product containing over 50 per cent minus 75 µm material, and as a ball mill of grinding more than 60 t/h of minus 19 mm quartzite to a minus 3 mm product containing over 35 per cent minus 75 µm material. Extrapolation of computer models of the process suggests that these limits can be comfortably exceeded. Long-term continuous testing is in hand, aimed at proving that this I m in diameter by I m long mill is in every respect the equivalent of a conventional 4 m by 6 m ball mill.

Modern materials for underground support* by M. McChesney The properties required of a support material for underground tunnels are discussed and, because concrete is both economical and easy to apply, a number of new reinforcing materials for concrete are examined with particular reference to these properties. From about thirty tests on different types of reinforced concrete, it is concluded that the addition of polymer to a concrete does not seem to influence the concrete's post-failure behaviour, and the on'y benefit to be achieved by this addition is to increase its flexibility (or to decrease it, depending on the polymer). Steel fibres tend to increase both the strength and stiffness of the concrete, but polypropylene fibres, although having definite loadcarrying capacities, provide non-stable failure, also known as brittle failure. The best result was obtained for concrete reinforced with steel wire: the post-cracking strength was very good and was maintained for a considerable deformation.

New trends and developments in the production of ferro-silicon, ferro-manganese and ferro-chrome alloys are discussed, with emphasis on the general trend to the adoption of large production units. Problems which arise, both of a metallurgical and an electrical nature, due to the use of large electric furnaces, are outlined with specific reference to the limitations imposed by the power carrying capacity of Soderberg electrodes, the furnace resistance and the furnace reactance. The implications of combining high resistance within the furnace with good metallurgical operating conditions are illustrated by considering the production of ferro-silicon and ferro-manganese. The possibility of replacing electric furnaces used for ferro-manganese production, by large low shaft blast furnaces using oxygen enriched blast, is mentioned. The continued use of small electric arc furnaces for ferro-chrome production is also mentioned, and is ascribed to lack of ore suitable for treatment in large furnaces. Agglomeration of chromite ores appears to be a possible answer to this problem.

The selection of the most suitable mechanized mining strategy has to consider the geotechnical environment in which it will be operating. A mechanized mining method or machine is designed to a given set of specifications to work within an environment. The geological conditions that define this environment are fixed—detailed information of these conditions for design specifications is thus critical. Two major classes of geotechnical parameters are defined—critical and design. The critical controlling factors are a result of mineral composition, size, shape, abundance, assemblage and associated texture, as well as discontinuity type and orientation. Design parameters are specific to each deposit, and their nature cannot be broadly described, as with the critical factors. It is shown that for major deposits in South Africa, namely the Witwatersrand Basin (gold), the Bushveld Igneous Complex (PGEs) and the Karoo Coalfields that by incorporating geological and geotechnical information that appropriate mechanized mining methods can be deduced, and that the performance and design parameters of specific technologies can be determined

The influence of economics on the design of mine shaft systems by H, M. WEI.LS, Pr. Eng., M.Se. (Fellow) The purpose of this paper is to review some of the more important economic criteria that must be taken into account when planning the number, type, size, and distribution of the shafts, or shaft systems, required to exploit a block of payable ore. The postulated philosophy governing the selection of design parameters is that of optimization of the financial return per rand of venture capital employed for the project as a whole. While this criterion may not necessarily satisfy the investment objective under all circumstances (as, for instance, where risk limitation is important), it does serve to place the relative economic advantages and disadvantages of specific design features, which may sometimes be in opposition, into correct perspective with respect to the overall economics of the project under the prevailing economic climate at the time of the investigation.

SYNOPSIS This paper is based on a thesis dealing with the problem of basing the current rate at which money is collected from mine owners to pay compensation for pneumoconiosis in the future, on the current dust hazard on mines. The certification of pneumoconiotics and the incidence of pneumoconiosis are discussed against the background of existing legal provision for collecting funds for compensation. The various pneumoconiosis indices are considered. In the data analyzed, the only pneumoconiosis index common to a number of classes of mines is the time it takes to develop pneumoconiosis. Sets of dust indices and pneumoconiosis indices are computed. Expressions are derived for the time it takes to develop pneumoconiosis as a function of the dust hazard, and for the collection of funds as a function of the time available for collection. From these two expressions follows an expression for the rate of collecting funds as a function of the dust hazard.

The main purpose of the paper is to determine the contribution of fluctuations in barometric pressure to flammable gas explosions in South African mines. For this purpose, the barometric-pressure patterns preceding each of the 59 major explosions in South African gold and coal mines over the past 20 years were analysed. It is concluded that diurnal fluctuations in pressure do not have a major influence on the accumulation of gas in the underground workings, but that pressure drops associated with cyclonic weather systems moving across the country over a number of days are the major factor contributing to gas explosions in mines. To illustrate some of the points made in the paper, the Hlobane Colliery explosion of September 1983 is used as a case study. In the final section, several general conclusions are drawn and recommendations put forward as to how mines should recognize and react to meteorological phenomena that may lead to an increased probability of gas explosions in underground workings.
