This paper describes the various new computer-aided techniques being used by economists in the construction of economic models. It discusses the relevance of these techniques to mining industries. In particular, it describes their role in making it possible to obtain better estimates of future price and demand developments on the markets on which metals are sold, and how these estimates can be used to improve forward planning by mining companies.

In 1970 it was decided to build a large new plant at the Chingola Division of N.C.C.M., Ltd., to treat concentrator tailings and leach residues with a low copper content by a leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning process. In order to assist in the establishment of the design parameters for the new plant, and to study the interaction of this plant with the existing leach-electrowinning plant, mathematical models, formulated as linear programs, have been developed and used extensively. The paper outlines the metallurgy of the plants and describes briefly the way in which the models have been formulated and used. The formulation involved the use of separable programming to form the products of some variables.

Maximizing shareholder value has become a common aim for mining companies. This paper discusses the results of a number of studies developing strategic mine plans, covering a wide range of commodities, styles of mineralization, mining methods, and processing facilities, for single and multiple deposits. It has become evident that traditional methods and conventional wisdom often do not in fact achieve these goals. Operating policies at many mines ensure that shareholder value is not maximized. Changing the overall strategy can provide significant value gains. Typically, the new optimal plan involves a significant increase in the cutoff grade, at least in the earlier years. An increase in the underground development rate or open cut stripping rate is often associated with this, at least in the short term, to establish the new strategy. Cost minimization is found to be counter-productive. Counter-intuitive plans are often found to be optimal. For example, optimal cutoffs for different parts of an underground mine may be significantly different, even if mineralisation and cost structures are similar. Sub-optimal strategies are also frequently found to have a significantly greater financial risk than optimal plans, which have been found in many cases to be relatively insensitive to changes in major value drivers, such as metal prices. This paper shows how identifying and then operating within the framework of an optimal strategic plan can have substantial benefits over being continually driven by short-term tactical issues.

In a gold CIP/CIL circuit, adding new circuit water to a final tails thickener and then directing the thickener overflow to the head of the circuit significantly reduces the cyanide concentration at the TSF discharge spigot. The new water is used to dilute the final tails. The dilution and recycle of the tails in this manner may have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption, in some cases to the point where the reagent savings justify the expenditure and Cyanide Code compliance is achieved at no extra cost. Potential circuit configurations and water recycles can be modelled by splicing a flowsheeting and thermodynamics package, such that changes to the composition of the water can be reduced to chemical speciation with a Gibbs free energy minimisation enabling a complete understanding of the circuit water chemistry.

This paper shows, through a case study, the impact of multivariate grade modelling upon mine design and mine planning. A deposit explored by drill holes is considered, in which the grades of five elements (copper, silver, molybdenum, arsenic, and antimony) are of interest. Forty alternative models of the deposit are constructed by fitting the joint correlation structure of the grade variables and using conditional cosimulation. In addition, a reference model, obtained by averaging the alternative models, is also considered. The study shows that the resulting mine design (final pit characteristics and production schedules) is sensitive to the grade model under consideration, and that the design based on the reference model may not be optimal when compared to the alternative models based on cosimulation. However, when assuming a given long-term plan and extraction sequence, the grades and net present value (NPV) calculated on the reference model are unbiased with respect to those calculated on the alternative models with the same extraction sequence. The latter allow assessing the possible dispersion of the actual grades and NPV around their expected values, and are useful for the planner in order to determine the probability of meeting given production targets and of exceeding or falling short of given threshold grades. Additionally, unlike cosimulation, the separate simulation of each grade variable leads to unrealistic resource models and to biased results in mine design and mine planning. This approach should therefore be avoided, unless the grade variables are spatially uncorrelated.

Two backfill systems have been developed on West Driefontein, namely the centrifuge dewatered tailings system and the cyclone-classified tailings system. Modifications to the two systems since the publication of the original paper (Close and Klokow, 1985) are discussed in addition to the results obtained. Considerable experience has been gained from the operation of the centrifuge dewatering units as well as the placement of dewatered tailings in a difficult mine environment. The centrifuge dewatered tailings method has proved successful in the extraction of a highly stressed block of ground at No. 5A Sub-vertical Shaft. The utilization of backfill support in this area made it possible to dispose of a high-grade barrier pillar. This pillar was considered necessary prior to the introduction of backfill support. The recovery of the gold from this pillar made the use of dewatered tailings backfill cost- effective, despite high labour and maintenance costs. Current experience with the bagfilling method of placing cyclone- classified tailings indicates that it is viable and requires considerably less capital investment. Although expensive at present, it is envisaged that costs will decrease once cheaper bags and other forms of stope support are used. The placement of backfill in small-diameter sausage-type bags requires no change in mining cycle and allows the backfill to be placed close to the stope face. Both backfill systems are being expanded but preference is to be given to the cyclone-classified tailings system.

To improve the climatic environment underground the German coal mining industry has installed refrigerators with a capacity of 300 MW cooling power. One third of this total is accounted for by central refrigeration plants with more than 5 MW capacity. The central refrigeration comprises three stages: mechanical cooling, transport and distribution of chilled water via pipelines and exchange of heat in the air coolers. Of these three stages only the mechanical generation of chilled water has been resolved satisfactorily. Transport (including distribution) and exchange require further technical research. The Mining Institute of the Aachen University of Technology has done extensive studies on this subject, concentrating on controlling the flow of chilled water according to demand in the mine. Additionally, the favourable exchange in the air coolers is taken into account. The studies are based on a model mine which simulates the conditions in deep coal mines in Germany. The simulation program represents firstly the condition of the mine air at the location of the air being cooled, then the heat exchange in the air cooler itself, and finally the transport of the chilled water from the central refrigerator to the consumer. The program also reproduces the seasonal and operational changes in conditions of mine air as well as different air cooler designs. A regulated distribution of chilled water is also suggested. Finally, estimations of costs can be made as an aid for further planning.

The peak in Sulphur price late 2008 caused again intensified investigation into the decomposition of sulphates and spend acid. One option is the recycling of sulphur from spend acid, which already started more than 40 years ago in the field of spend acid from organic processes in refineries and acrylic glass manufacturing. Since this acid couldn't be neutralized and discarded due to high organic contents, another source of SO2 to produce sulfuric acid is the decomposition of metal sulfates. The decomposition of metal sulfates was investigated at the next peak in Sulphur price in the 80?s. The first major scale pilot tests and studies of gypsum decomposition were carried out for clients in Florida. The decomposition of gypsum was quite often mainly influenced by the strategic decision of some countries to get own and independent acid production. In other cases the industry doesn?t have enough space to dump the gypsum. Therefore the company was also forced to convert the gypsum into ?saleable? products to avoid these residues. Other projects were made for the recycling of iron-sulfates from the pigment industry. The motivations for these projects were not only given by acid price. For the German pigment industry it was no longer permitted in the 80?s to dump the iron sulphate residues into the sea. These regulations forced the industry to develop new technology, which allows converting of the FeSO4-residues into iron oxide and acid. Therefore economical and mainly environmental factors influenced the decision of the companies to develop and to build these plants. Beside the above mention iron- and calcium-sulphates many other process exist, which produce metal sulphates as an intermediate product. These cases are not forced by environmental or strategic factors. In cases like Ni, Co or Mn-decomposition the main product of the plant is treated in the decomposition plant and later on used as ferrous-alloys. These final products are higher in price compared to e.g. CaO, which exclude the high-energy consumption for the endothermic chemical decomposition reaction. The reaction of SO2 generation based on acid or sulfate decomposition takes place in the range of 1000°C. The energy demand of the endothermic reaction is considerable and leads due to the high fuel-combustion off-gas stream to a diluted SO2 gas. Energy prices are usually increasing at the same time like sulphur. Sulphuric Acid based on decomposition is therefore more expensive than as acid based on sulphur combustion. The paper describes fluid bed technology and possible process concepts for decomposition plants. Additionally the thermodynamic background of the decomposition process and the main influence factors are provided to receive a better understanding of this technology.

INTRODUCTION Most presidential addresses are in the nature of a review of some specific topic and this will be no different. In thinking about the subjects which might be suitable for this address I decided that as next month will see my retirement from the gold mining industry I might review the four decades since I started in the industry in 1929. These four decades have been more than usually in',~resting and exciting. They have covered a period when the price of gold increased from the old figure of 84/- an ounce to the price of $35 an ounce today, taking in on the way at least two periods of premium sales from which the producer benefitted. The industry in these four decades has survived the most totally destructive war in history and has seen fundamental changes in the political, economic and governmental life of South Africa. There have been great technological changes and improvements, some of which I shall refer to later, and in addition there have been profound changes in the relations between employer and employee in the industry which have affected not only the economy of the industry but the traditional thinking of both management and labour. I believe that the address presented to this Institute on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary by Mr Goode covered more than adequately the history of the Institute and the part it has played in the mining industry of South Africa. It would be merely repetitive, therefore, to discuss the affairs of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Having said this, however, it is also necessary to point out that the history of the Institute is, and always will be, an important record of the history of mining in South Africa. There are many facets, however, on which we ought to look back and to re-examine. One of the most rewarding, but at the same time one of the dullest, places to look for historical facts is in the annual reports of the Chamber of Mines. I suppose that some of the dullest of these have been the reports for which paragraphs have been prepared by me personally. The notes which follow do not claim to be anything like a full record of this exciting period. RISE AND FALL OF THE GOLD MINING INDUSTRY In talking about the mining industry of South Africa it is inevitable that one talks, particularly in the historical sense, about the gold mining industry - an industry of fundamental importance which has made South Africa what it is and which has been dying since the early part of this century. In Table I is shown the progress of the gold mining industry measured by its output of ounces of fine gold from the beginning of operations until the end of 1969, and if you are interested in the productivity of the men who work this industry the table, composed entirely from figures set out in the Chamber's annual reports, also shows the production of gold expressed as fine ounces per European and fine ounces per Bantu worker over a long period. If you are still minded to think of this industry as dying then the last column in the table shows how uranium has played such a vital part in the prosperity of the country.

Gravity-fed water systems in mines by A. WHILLlER, Pr. Eng., Se. D. (M.I.T.) (Fellow) and J. VAN DER WALT, Pr. Eng., B.A. Hons. (Bus. Admin.), Ph.D. (Eng.) (Visitor) South African mines often experience significant losses in production because of recurring shortages of water at work places as the result of underground dams running dry. Similar shortages have occurred during fire-fighting operations, and now, with the use of cold service water to aid in the cooling of mines, it is even more necessary that such shortages should be prevented. This paper draws attention to the primary cause of such water shortages, and an outline is given of some of the fundamental hydraulic principles that must be followed in the design of gravity-fed water-supply systems on mines.

This paper describes the economics of backfilling, hydro-power, and mechanization when they are combined in an integrated stoping system. These three technologies have been shown to be viable, and the mines of the Gold Fields Group are introducing backfilling where the depths exceed approximately 2000 m below surface and in other highly stressed areas. addition, a number of mines are installing hydro-powered systems, and the first trackless stope within the Group may soon be a reality. The main emphasis in the paper is placed on the quantifiable effects of trackless stoping, including a basic risk analysis by use of a spreadsheet model. It is concluded that a substantial decrease in working costs and an increase in revenue are possible, resulting in a marked increase in working profit.

Correlations for the critical velocity needed to hydraulically convey particles in horizontal, or near-horizontal, pipes are either explicitly dependent upon the shear stress imparted by the fluid upon the surface of the particle bed, or require a velocity and hydraulic diameter. Often such approaches are modified to account for pipe inclination by the introduction of simple factors. However, we assert that the physics that underpins the hydraulic conveying of particles in steep pipes (such as a directionally drilled oil well) is dissimilar to that which governs particle behaviour in horizontal pipes. In steeply inclined systems, a sliding sediment induces an upward counter flow and hence an autogenous contribution to the shear rate. The physics underpinning particle hydraulic conveying in steep systems is explored using the separation results of Laskovski et al.10

TSG Consulting works with many of the major global mining companies using simulation modelling as an integral component in their development team's processes to determine which combination of infrastructure options, operating performance and operating rules best achieve project goals. All systems can be divided into a series of subprocesses. Conventional management and design practices focus on the optimisation of these system components. However, the interaction between subprocesses means that improvements made to the individual components do not necessarily translate into total system performance improvement. TSG Consulting advocates a `total integrated system approach' to understanding the behaviour and performance of complex interacting systems. In a constraint-based integrated set of processes, the instantaneous system capacity is limited by the subsystem component capacity that is the bottleneck at that point in time. Additionally, real world stochastic and dynamic influences tend to have knock-on effects across subsystem boundaries. This necessitates the requirement for simulation modelling to develop and validate solutions that are sufficiently robust to deliver sustainable outcomes. The key to maximising production is to understand the causes and effects the inherent variability has on component performance, subprocess performance and most importantly, the total integrated system performance. The correct use of simulation modelling techniques allows study teams to evaluate the relative merits of different capacity enhancement proposals. Put simply, when done well, simulation modelling provides a quantitative and rational process to enhance the knowledge and insight needed to make informed decisions.

Interest in early gangue rejection has grown substantially in the minerals industry to reduce energy and water consumption arising from excessive comminution. Recent developments in coarse-particle flotation have proven successful by promoting a quiescent hydrodynamic environment to limit particlebubble detachment and by helping to convey more buoyant particles to the overflow. Current approaches also benefit from upstream classification to remove the finer particles ahead of the coarse-particle flotation. In this study, coarse-particle flotation was investigated experimentally using a novel hybrid gravity-flotation system called CoarseAIR™ that exploits the hydrodynamic advantages of the Reflux® Classifier. The system consists of a lower fluidised bed housing, with a system of inclined channels above. The inclined channels enhance the segregation and hence rejection of intermediate through to relatively coarse particles containing little or no surface liberation. This approach overcomes the need for pre-classification, while offering strong transport of coarse particles made buoyant through their attachment to air bubbles. The paper explores the strong relationship between the solids transport to the overflow and the input gas flux, showing firstly the potential for significant mass rejection at the relatively low gas fluxes, and robust performance in terms of recovery across the full range of gas fluxes. Introductory remarks by author When Mr R. C. J. Goode suggested preparation of a paper in the area of manpower utilization in South Africa, I was, while keen to accept his invitation, somewhat hesitant for two reasons. Firstly, I recognized the great difficulty of making a factual contribution, because of the lack of really relevant statistical information available, the fact that much of it is out of date, and the difficulty of researching and co-ordinating it and of evaluating a statistically sound resultant viewpoint. Experience in the actual preparation of this paper has done nothing to change my view in this respect. Secondly, it is obvious that a paper presented to a meeting of this Institute, by a member of it, would be expected to devote considerable attention to the subject in the mining industry. I am not directly employed by the mining industry, although my company has carried out extensive assignments for various sectors of it both in this country and in other parts of the world, since the 1939-45 war. I am more conscious than most of the tremendous technical and managerial skills at the disposal of the industry in this country, and consequently am equally conscious of the hazards of publishing facts and figures which might be taken to indicate any criticism of performance. I am aware that some of the information that I am about to present may indeed generate comment, and possibly even critical comment. I would like to be regarded therefore in presenting this information, as a member of the group, rather than an external critic. Under these circumstances, comment can only be constructive, and this is my earnest hope. The contribution of my paper, if contribution there is, will I hope be in the area of assessing labour productivity in mining, and in secondary industry in such a way that the performance of each against its own past results is comparable. This task has not for the present been to my knowledge attempted, and in advance I wish to take out authors' insurance against legitimate criticism from professional economists and others, by stating that I am well aware of possible short-comings in the arguments. Nevertheless I believe that under the circumstances I have, with the important assistance of several people, been able to take the subject further than has been the case in the past. Finally, I have related productivity in the mining industry and in secondary industry to a target of productivity in the Republic of South Africa. I was fortunate recently in being able to attend a series of lectures by a prominent economist in America. He introduced his subject by calling it 'A broad survey of macro-economics'. Perhaps I might be permitted to describe my paper, in the same idiom, as 'The macro-management of labour'.

Nanobubbles (NBs) flotation separation can be an indicator for improving the efficiency of fine particles through the conventional process. Since flotation reagents such as frothers can reduce bubble size, they can potentially be used for the generation of NBs and develop a selective NB flotation separation. This study explored the flotation separation of fine phosphate particles from their associated minerals in the presence of NBs, which were generated by using a phosphate flotation reagent (Flo-YS: collector-frother). The results of flotation tests showed that in the presence of NBs, the flotation efficiency was significantly improved. However, in the presence of NBs, surface chemistry analyses (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) illustrated that the collector adsorption on the surface of phosphate particles decreased. A comparison between outcomes of various phosphate flotation conditions indicated that increasing the flotation efficiency in the presence of NBs may be due to the aggregation of fine particles by the generated NBs, and also selective adsorption of NBs (hydrophobisation) on the surface of particles. In other words, generating NBs by selective collectors may increase efficiency and decrease the collector consumption of a flotation process. A large new underground platinum mining project required that all different mining options were investigated during an option study before proceeding to the prefeasibility stage of the project. The capital project team identified 21 different options requiring investigation. These options considered 10 different access methods and 4 different mining methods. Each of the 21 options required a mine design, a valid production schedule, and the associated economics in order to facilitate a comparison on project Net Present Value (NPV) and other metrics. The project sponsors required this work to be completed in 3 months and therefore the project team decided to adopt an object-oriented modelling approach as implemented by Cyest Corporation. This would allow all 21 options to be valuated within the tight time frame due to the generation and re-use of templates. Standard objects were configured into templates containing the mine layout, design, and scheduling logic. These templates could then be assembled into a model to represent the option being investigated. The adoption of rules-based design and production scheduling then allowed for the rapid generation of a valid production schedule for each option with different iterations of varying production ramp-up and mining efficiency assumptions. The activity-based operating costs, labour, and capital were also linked to the standard templates such as a half level or barrel, which were then replicated to represent the overall mine structure for each option under consideration. Using this approach for each option, a full production schedule was produced per mining activity, the operating costs were calculated using activity-based costing, an infrastructure capital expenditure estimate was determined, the development capital requirements costed, and an overall NPV determined. This options study was completed in an unprecedented 10 weeks and a recommendation was put through to the Business to take three of the options to the next study phase.

The vision of having large, high quality diamond as part of a broad engineering tool-kit for many diverse high tech industries is now becoming a reality however, with the advent of early stage commercial availability of single crystal and poly crystalline CVD diamond.
