It should be possible to use an oxygen probe to follow iron removal during converting, if local equilibrium is established between iron in the matte and the iron oxides in the fayalitic slag. The oxygen activity is expected to increase strongly as the iron content of the matte decreases (and the iron activity in the matte drops) while the iron oxide activity in the slag remains constant. To test this idea, oxygen activities were measured in synthetic mattes (made up of mixture of Cu2S, FeS and Ni3S2) when in contact with silica saturated SiO2-FeO slags, and silica and (initially) magnetite saturated SiO2-FeO-Fe3O4slags. The measurements were performed on laboratory scale at 1250°C, using an oxygen probe consisting of a stabilized zirconia electrolyte and Fe/FeO reference, and containing the sample in a silica crucible. Electrical contact to the matte was by means of a platinum wire. The measured oxygen activity was sensitive to the iron content of the matte, and insensitive to the composition of the gas atmosphere over the melt. The measured oxygen activity was generally close to that predicted by Fact Sage calculations. This indicates that such oxygen activity measurements could be useful to monitor iron removal during converting of nickel-copper-iron mattes.

In the previous chapters we did not concern ourselves with the fact that the geostatistical properties of the regionalized variable x (z) are affected by the size of the support w. Ideally, when analysing an ore body O, we would like to determine the properties of point values in O, i.e. the properties of a regionalized variable with an infinitely small support, say w°. In practice, point values are never known. To measure the value of x at a point z we must take a sample of size w centred at z. For example, if we are interested in the grade at point z, w will be the volume of the sample 'centred in z; if we are interested in the metal accumulation at point z, w will be the area of the cross-section of the sample centred in z. We say that the measured property is a regularized variable, and so the semivariogram (or covariogram) calculated from the values obtained is also regularized. In the majority of the mining problems which can be solved by geostatistical methods, we are interested in the properties of blocks of ore and of samples with a finite non-point support. It will be shown in the following chapters that these problems can be solved by calculating the average value of the point sernivariogram in volumes or areas of finite dimension, or between such volumes or areas. These calculations would be simple if we knew the point semivariogram. This means that the point semivariogram has to be estimated from the observed regularized semivariogram(s).

Models of cone crushers and vibrating screens are described. These models have been constructed from actual plant data using a systematic model-building technique. Included in this technique is regression analysis using multi-dimensional spline functions. The models have been used too simulate complete crushing plants and hence to design and evaluate a control system for crushing plants.

A. H. Mokken: I am pleased to have been given this opportunity to make a contribution to Dr Muller's paper tonight. The reason for this is that, at one stage in our careers, we were associates in the same undertaking. Dr Muller, then fresh from University, with a degree in pure science, had just stepped onto the first rung of the ladder, which, it was then thought, would lead him to a career in gold extractive metallurgy. However, endowed with an enquiring mind and conscious of a lack of fundamental training in general metallurgy and engineering, he felt a need for further academic study. To meet this need and, more importantly, to meet the necessary finances, he found his opportunity in steel. Armed with a bursary, he bade farewell to gold and proceeded overseas, to the University of Sheffield, to train as a steel metallurgist. The outcome of these academic efforts, which were followed by assignments in the steel industry and a further period at Sheffield, is the man we have listened to tonight-a highly qualified metallurgist who has displayed a sound knowledge of his subject. In choosing Sheffield, Dr Muller became associated with a steelmaking centre of world renown, a centre usually credited with the first systematic production of alloy steels, as far back as the 18th century. Since that time, great advances have been made in the production of alloy steels and this is especially so in the last decade or two, when major developments in civil, mechanical, electrical, aeronautical and nuclear engineering have been made possible by the development of steels with improved properties. In spite of spectacular advances in the technology of non-ferrous alloys, plastics and other materials of construction, steel has maintained its role as a pre-eminent material for engineering use. With the gradual accumulation of data on the properties of steels, and the use of thin film electron microscopy, to study the behaviour and characteristics of such phenomena as dislocations in metals and other microstructural features, the physical metallurgist appears to be approaching the stage of an exact understanding of such phenomena as strength, ductility and brittleness-a knowledge which could lead to close control of such properties and, therefore, to the attainment of the highest goals. An interesting example, illustrating the use of fundamental principles, based on physico-metallurgical research, is the development of the maraging steels developed by Bieber at the International Nickel Company. These steels have met the extreme technological requirements of the space age by providing the material for the cases of large rockets in which qualities, such as high tensile strength, toughness, workability and weldability are most important. Attractive as they might appear to be in considerations of savings of weight, cost of erection, transport of materials and foundations, the use of high strength steels has been accompanied by special problems such as brittle fracture, hydrogen embrittlement, notch-toughness and fatigue. It has been found that high strength steels, which performed acceptably in conventional tension tests, were found to undergo failure, in a brittle manner, in service. Hydrogen embrittlement has caused spectacular failures at a fraction of the normal ultimate tensile strength, and a lack of correlation between fatigue and tensile strengths has diminished the advantages to be obtained from the use of high strength steel in some applications. A new approach to the selection of materials for engineering design has resulted from a consideration of these phenomena in which strength, as such, is no longer as significant as it was previously. BHPBilliton is a large (US$32bn market capitalization) diversified mining group. Significant organic growth is planned through the development of a number of mining, processing and oil and gas projects, totalling some US$5.2bn over the next three years. The investment standards underpin the capital approval process, and incorporate the requirements for range and risk analysis of key input variables, including mineral resources. Public reporting codes for mineral resources and ore reserves (such as JORC) stipulate deterministic reporting of estimates, but are generally silent on any requirement for range or risk assessment, although they acknowledge the risk and uncertainty in the production of resource estimates. In contrast, public reporting of petroleum reserves allow for the use of either deterministic or probabilistic estimation, and for the latter, mandate the level of confidence required for proven versus probable reserves. Conditional simulation techniques, popular in the petroleum industry, provide an ideal tool forrange and risk assessment of the range of outcomes of key resource parameters, such as tonnagesand grades. Examples of a diamond deposit and of a porphyry copper deposit are presented. The understanding and quantification of mineral resource risk through a technique such as conditional simulation provides quantified information on the potential upside or downside. Geological and geotechnical data are essential for the design of tunnels. To determine the rock mass behavior and the support of a planned tunnel excavation a consistent method for rock mass characterization and excavation and support determination has been developed. Probabilistic data processing with analytical methods is used for the quantification of the procedure and allows an evaluation of the applicability and the technical risk of different excavation and support methods. The sensitivity of the procedure on selected input parameters is highlighted in a parametric study. Finally an application of the procedure illustrates the use of the described method of probabilistic excavation and support determination for tunnels. Des données géologiques et géotechniques sont décisives pour la planification d’un tunnel. Pour la détermination du comportement des strates, le choix du soutènement et de la méthode de progression une description compréhensible de la montagne a été développée. À l'aide d'un traitement de données probabiliste, la procédure proposée est transposée quantitative sur une base de méthodes analytiques. De cette manière l'évaluation des méthodes de construction et la détermination du risque technique deviennent possibles. La sensitivité de la procédure de différents paramètres d'entrée est représentée dans une étude de paramètre. Pour finir, l'application de la procédure décrite est montrée à l’aide d'un cas pratique. Für die Ermittlung des Gebirgsverhaltens und der Festlegung von Ausbruch und Stützung wurde ein nachvollziehbarer Ablauf der Gebirgsbeschreibung entwickelt. Mit Hilfe von probabilistischer Datenverarbeitung auf Grundlage analytischer Methoden wird die vorgeschlagene Prozedur quantiativ umgesetzt. Dadurch werden die Bewertung von Baumethoden und die Ermittlung des technischen Risikos ermöglicht. Die Sensitivität des Verfahrens von einzelnen Eingangsparametern wird in einer Parameterstudie dargestellt. Abschließend wird anhand eines Beispiels die Anwendung des beschriebenen Verfahrens gezeigt.

This paper presents the results of research on the development and application of a custom-made truck cycle and delay automated data collection system (TCD-ADCS) in a surface coal mining. Truck cycle and delay field data are locally stored in trucks and then synchronized and replicated through a wireless network into a centralized server containing an already-developed integrated production management system (IPMS). The system relies on motion sensing and distance travelled in order to automatically define the cycle starting/ending points, cycle time, position, and delay time. Connectivity and communication between loading equipment and trucks are also established. Communication between the equipment operators and TCD-ADCS system is via a user-friendly graphic interface. The hardware used for the development of this system consists of a rugged touch-screen personal computer, 2.4 GHz radio transmitter antenna, and a commercial GPS receiver. The main mineral components of the so-called heavy sands (or black sand) are the titanium, zirconium and iron-bearing minerals, rutile, zircon and illmenite, accompanied by various minor and trace amounts of silicates or phosphates, often present together with the rare earth elements. The investigated samples originated from Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) in South Africa, which is jointly owned by BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, the largest titanium slag producer in the world. The present study focused on the characteristics of samples originating from various points in the separation plant. The heavy-mineral fractions and concentrates of a representative suite of samples were investigated using various analytical techniques to establish the differences in morphological and elemental compositions at the different points in the plant. These techniques included: reflected light microscopy, micro-raman spectrometry (MRS), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX) and structural and chemical analyser (SCA). All samples comprised a heterogeneous population of zircon and rutile grains with diverse physico-chemical properties, expressed by large differences in colour and trace element chemistry of single grains. The elemental composition proved the presence of the rare earth elements that appeared to coexist with both Ti and Zr minerals. The percentage of grains hosting inclusions, such as anatase, monazite, quartz, spessartine, augite, epidote and actinolite, varied for each sample and could be uniquely characterized by Raman investigations. Project-finance risk assessment is mature and approached systematically. Mining industry due diligence remains fragmented with specialists addressing different aspects of the project such as reserves/JORC, environmental impact, commodity market, even financial analysis/ modelling. Each professional has a natural tendency to believe that the risk factors they have examined are the key ones necessary to be reviewed, as if their review will stand in isolation from others in the way a project materialises. By first laying out the project risk categories and risk matrices, this paper examines the due diligence process with a keen eye to the risk assessment and overlap/interaction. Some cross fertilisation of due diligence techniques from other industry sectors is placed into the mining context. Six case studies are then presented with regards to due diligence features in each project's feasibility review or financial information/ offering memorandum. A power case first shows the differences between the due diligence expectations of banks versus bond financings. Then some Australian and Indonesian mining development cases are analysed to see the due diligence learning points. Some of these were project/due diligence failures. The conclusion focuses on the value of a systematic risk assessment for project evaluation, all from the project-finance perspective.

It is almost eight years to the day when we launched the original SAMREC Code in March 2000. Since that date I think the SA minerals industry has matured beyond recognition in its approach to reserve and resource reporting, and I believe we can be justifiably proud of that progress. Many of those companies that have led the way in reporting standards are listed on our sponsors list. We thank them for their sponsorship but even more for their considerable support in all aspects of the SAMCODE organization. Matt Mullins, my co-speaker here today, has been instrumental in the revision of the SAMREC Code over a long period of time and also took up the reigns with the SAMVAL Code after the retirement of Rob Croll. I would like to formally thank Matt for his immense contribution in producing the two Codes; he can take great pride in the final product and fully deserves the many accolades that we have already received from our international counterparts. He has done all this whilst still maintaining a very demanding day job at BHPBilliton. Matt will be the first to admit that he has received tremendous support from more than 100 people who participated in the various working groups, many of whom are employed by our sponsors. There are obviously too many to mention by name but they deserve a big vote of thanks for their personal contributions. The techniques used in this study of the non-oxidative dissolution rates of high- and Iow-grade nickel mattes in hydrochloric acid involved leaching and the use of a rotating ring-disc electrode. It was found that the rate of metal dissolution depends on the potential at which the matte dissolves, a maximum rate of dissolution being observed at -0,2 V to 0,3 V (relative to a saturated calomel electrode). The results are comparable with those obtained in work on the dissolution of synthetic nickel and iron sulphides. The adverse effect of excess sulphur on the rate of nonoxidative dissolution is explained in terms of the mixed potential of the reaction. The leaching studies showed the feasibility of processing a high-grade nickel matte by non-oxidative dissolution, and indicate that maximum rates can be obtained in the presence of fairly Iow concentrations of oxidant. A relative selective dissolution of iron can be obtained from the Iow-grade matte under reducing conditions, thus resulting in a significant upgrading of this material. An elevated location of a paste thickener on a ridge close to the disposal area is considered at a Swedish iron ore mine. About 0.7 M tonnes of thickened tailings are planned to be layered as paste in the vicinity of the thickener over several years with pipeline lengths of up to 900 m after about 20 years. In order to clarify the pipeline pumping characteristics of the tailings product for volumetric solids concentration from 40 to 50%, experiments in loop systems with pipeline inner diameters from 0.063 to 0.152 m have been carried out with various types of pumps. The results and comparisons carried out here showed that the performance of centrifugal pumps cannot simply be related to the rheology, but factors related to pump design and build-up tendencies of material within the pump and other particle properties may be of equal importance. During the first years of operation only one thickener underflow pump is required. The reliability and performance for various pump configurations are planned to be investigated systematically in order to meet the most effective long-term solution for paste thickener operation, pipeline distribution and placement in the disposal area as the discharge point advances over the life of the project.

Applied geophysical methods such as the surface seismic method have been applied for many years and in many places, mainly for oil exploration and to a lesser extent for mineral deposits? exploration in sedimentary basins. The seismic method fundamental is based on the variations of acoustic impedance in a layered earth model and such variations at each main geological interface create reflected waves that are processed and imaged in order to output a clear picture of the subsurface structure. The geology of South Africa was historically, and even until recently, considered as unfit for seismic exploration and the mines were always reluctant to spend any portions of their exploration budgets on these techniques. Hard rocks and high P-waves velocities were creating quite a hopeless model for any mine geologist or geophysicist (if any), unsuitable for the proper use of seismic waves to image their subsurface problems. Boreholes were considered the only reliable tool to derive a geological image of the mine structural features and were linked sometimes with surface methods such as aero-magnetism. The obvious flaw of this methodology was the inability to derive a continuous image from a discrete set of measurement points. Surface 3D seismic is the tool that gives a reliable solution from the initial model extracted from the boreholes, as even the aero-magnetism mapping gives a flat image, unable to show any depth correlation from well to well. The first 3D surface seismic surveys were recorded in the early Nineties only for the gold mines of the Witwatersrand, after a series of serious new shaft sinking failures. The wrong geological locations of these shafts resulted in financial loss of several hundred million rands. The era of3D seismic just started in South Africa and till 1997, all seismic done in the country was for gold exploration with geological target depths close to the oil exploration average depth of investigation. A very important breakthrough was reached when the depth accuracy of the seismic image was tested in real scale as the stopes were surveyed. An error of amplitude of 20 m was usual when true depth was compared with the seismic image predicted depth and shape. This accuracy, completely unknown in oil exploration, started to gain supporters of seismic methods in the mining community but the cash problems and the concentration/disappearance of gold mines in the late Nineties, led to the belief that seismic would be just a very short exploration activity for the mining sector. ort exploration activity for the mining sector. But starting in 1998 with Impala, a tremendous and continuous 3D surface seismic activity occurred in the platinum mining sector. The seismic world got used to new terms such a Merensky and UG2, which have replaced the VCR and black reef. If the primary expectation of platinum surface 3D seismic was to determine and ascertain new shaft locations, as for the gold mines, the quality of seismic data led the mine geologists to require smaller and smaller imaging of geological objects. In addition to the main structural image, small faults, potholes, and shear zone were common expectations of platinum seismic. In a constant velocity environment, what saved the day was the sharp density contrast between the PGM reef and the embedding geology. A good contrast of impedance exists in the whole Bushveld and is sufficient to have enough reflected waves from the PGM main layers to build a high quality seismic image of the subsurface. Recent advances in technology have led in less than 10years to major improvements in the seismic acquisition by using high frequency vibrating seismic sources, but also in processing and interpretation. With these latest improvements, seismic can detect objects of 7.5 m size, either fault throws, flexures, etc. The PGM formations of the Eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex are now accessible for seismic imaging, with cost per square kilometre comparable to the borehole cost of the same surface unit. The economically acceptable seismic surveys can be used for UG2 structural imaging up to a depth of 210 m below surface. Linked with borehole information, 3D seismic today offers a wide range of information for mine development: structural imaging, small fault detection, pothole and shear zone identification. All users of 3D seismic have also used this technique as a tool in the process to qualify their mineral reserves and especially from the category ?inferred? to the category ?measured?. Junior mining companies, in the feasibility stage of their projects, are also quite eager to use seismic as a reserve certification tool, when they present financial statements to future potential investors. The current high demand on platinum, pushes the seismic towards new technologies to be implemented in order to improve the final image. Using surface and borehole seismic together or acquiring seismic surveys with multi-component receivers have been just introduced in South Africa. In less than 10 years, surface seismic by adapting its methods to the special case of the Bushveld, became a mandatory step in mine development and ore resources evaluation. As part of the ?seismic? world we are proud to be a major player the ?surge? of platinum exploration and production in these last years and we will certainly increase our synergy with the mine sectors in the exciting coming years.

Day-to-day operations on the Broken Hill mine of the Black Mountain Mineral Development (BMMD) Company require a detailed knowledge of the distribution of the ore minerals within the orebody. The data are acquired by systematic underground diamond drilling of the orebody and subsequent geological and analytical borehole logging. These data are then captured onto a database, available for further analysis. Before mining commences in a mining block, copper, lead, zinc, silver and bismuth assay values, and the specific gravity of each sample, are extracted from the database. 3-dimensional variogram and kriging calculations are performed for each geological zone; for all the metals of interest. A computer representation of the mining block in the form of an ore model is then built using these kriged data. From these ore models information is extracted as required by the Geology Department on the mine, and used in numerous operations. These include: daily grade control to supply optimum feed grades to the treatment plant; the compilation of short, medium and long term production schedules; orebody outline definitions for the detailed planning of mining operations; ore resource calculations. The system has been modified and updated since its inception and provides timely information in a production environment.
