Gravity concentration - the separation of minerals according to their relative density - is one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Even though modern technology has developed a range of other processes, gravity concentration remains as one of the most important methods employed for mineral separation. The range of minerals recovered covers a wide spectrum, from andelusite to zircon, from coal to diamond, from gold to industrial mineral. The long history of gravity concen¬tration, along with a still imperfect understanding of the various mechanisms involved has resulted in a series of ingenious engineers developing, some¬times perfecting and sometimes rejecting, a wide range of equipment, suited for a variety of different duties. 'Selection' in the context of gravity separation, is primarily the choice of the right type of equipment for the separation in hand; 'sizing' of the correctly chosen unit is, more often than not, determining the appropriate number of units required to suit the throughput. The accent of this chapter will, therefore be 'selection'. A brief description of the major types of gravity concentration equipment will follow a discussion of the factors which determine the selection of the correct unit. CLASSIFICATION OF GRAVITY CONCENTRATION EQUIPMENT All concentration equipment has a primary function and a secondary function. The primary function is the efficient separation of the constituent minerals into two or more discrete phases; the secondary function is to effectively cause the discharge of these discrete phases into separate compartments (Aplan 1975). For maximum efficiency of operation, the forces which effect the primary function should not also result in the secondary function occurring; in such cases optimum operating conditions required for the primary function, separation, may have to be compromised to ensure reasonably efficient operation of the secondary function, product discharge. INTRODUCTION Mobile excavating and handling equipment are important 'tools of trade' in the mining and construction industries. The handling of this equipment must be mastered so that its limitations are learned and its harmonic use with other pieces of equipment is practiced. he sudden growth in mobile excavating and handling equipment type, size, complexity, and application started after the Second World War. This growth has not been accompanied by pertinent human factors research. Investigations into the proper and safe handling of such equipment with due regard for human and machine limitations are lacking. One such piece of equipment is the front-end loader (FEL), which during one cycle of operation excavates, loads, and hauls, (Lotfi and Adler, 1981). The diversity of action by FEL is archetypical among excavating and handling equipment. Front-end loaders are the most rapidly proliferating type of equipment in the industry. Also, front-end loaders are involved in the highest number of accidents involving mobile excavating and handling equipment. In the period 1970 to 1978, FEL's were involved in 27% of all mobile equipment accidents in surface mining (Adkins, 1980). Improving operational safety and efficiency will reduce the frequency of accidents. The performance of the operators can be evaluated and improved by the following steps: first, define the operating conditions and the operator workload intensity (Adler and Lotfi, 1983), second, monitor the operator to evaluate his task performance, and third, make recommendations based on the findings. The stressful nature of the equipment operating task is an acknowledged fact (Field, 1980). However, a systematic measurement of stress evaluation is lacking. In this paper, methods for measuring mental stress and fatigue, are defined, the mental load which caused the stress is outlined, and stress measurement methods are proposed. Resource nationalism is essentially mandatory government intervention in natural resources businesses by political or economic means in order to benefit the nation and the people. It is attacking the mining industry more and more rampantly by all kinds of means since the twenty-first century. Poor countries who count on a resource-led economic growth usually find themselves trapped into “resource curse”. The harmfulness of resource nationalism for investors is that one event can quickly escalate and lead to a chain of events which make projects commercially unavailable. In spite of historical and theoretical social investigations in the causes of resource nationalism, rare studies engaged in quantification of dominant parameters of it. The objective of this study is to find significant factors that dominate the occurrence of resource nationalism for important metal and energy resources producing countries and quantify their marginal effects. The study applies binary choice logit model for panel data using pooled method. One feature of the research is that binary data set of occurrence of resource nationalism are sorted out by authors referencing U.S. Geological Survey’s reports. The results indicate that high-technology export (% manufactured export), ores and metals exports (% merchandise exports), rule of law (world governance indicator), trade (% GDP), and natural resource rent except forest (% GDP ) dominant the occurrence of resource nationalism for high and upper middle income group countries; government effectiveness (world governance indicator), policy perception index (The Fraser Institute), high-technology export (% manufactured export), and mineral rent (% GDP) dominant the occurrence of resource nationalism for lower middle and low income countries. According to our model, probability of occurrence of resource nationalism in 90 countries are predicted. Top 10 risky countries in 2012 are estimated to be North Korea, India, Honduras, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Burkina Faso, Mongolia, Cuba, Bolivia, and Peru. The study is a primary trial of researching on resource nationalism and provides some insights for theoretical building and simulation on the issue.

Using pure albite and quartz minerals, the separation of albite from quartz using mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes is assessed through Hallimond flotation, zeta potential and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies. The reagent schemes are tested in bench-scale flotation for the separation of albite from Greek Stefania feldspar ore. The single mineral flotation tests showed the feasibility of selective albite flotation from quartz at around pH 2 using a mixture of cationic diamine and anionic sulfonate collectors or a combined cationic-anionic collector of diamine-dioleate. In contrast to the selective flotation response of albite at pH 2, where albite is slightly negatively charged and quartz possess zero charge, the zeta potential and FTIR studies elucidate similar adsorption behavior of mixed collectors on both of the minerals. The infrared spectra not only showed the co-adsorption of anionic sulfonate or oleate with diamine on the surface but also showed that the diamine adsorption increases with the presence of anionic collector. The intrusion of anionic collector in between adjacent surface alkyl ammonium ions decreases electrostatic head-head repulsion, thereby increasing the diamine adsorption by increasing the hydrophobic tail-tail bonds. The discrepancy in the flotation and adsorption results at pH 2 is attributed to the coarse and fine size particles employed in these studies, respectively. The comparable adsorption on fine particles of albite and quartz at pH 2 is explained by the interaction of ammonium ions on silanol groups by hydrogen bonding besides electrostatic interactions. The bench-scale flotation results indeed showed that selective albite flotation takes place only after desliming the feed material. An albite concentrate exceeding 10% (by weight) Na20 is produced from a material containing about 6.5% (by weight) Na20, where an albite product of more than 9% (by weight) Na20 is considered to be valuable. "On underground construction projects, effective Quality Management is essential for ensuring facility durability, life cycle performance and low maintainability. Furthermore, follow on contracts also rely on an effective quality management system for interface congruency. An effective Quality Management System (QMS) is also essential in mitigating risks and meeting schedule and budget performance objectives. For the past 15 years Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority’s Link Light Rail extension has successfully completed over 10 miles of twin bore tunneling and associated underground features including cross passages, deep sump structures and shafts. After the completion of each segment, lessons learned have successfully been implemented to improve the quality of delivered projects. This paper presents the Sound Transit QMS with regard to a number of project elements of tunnel construction projects, with specific focus on quality performance of slurry wall construction, TBM tunnel excavation assessment, segment production and segmental lining installation, and other associated construction features. A collaborated total QMS will be presented in this paper that will serve as a guide for successful implementation of Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes. INTRODUCTION Implementation of a robust Quality Management System reduces defects, errors and omissions, identifies and addresses nonconformance in a timely manner and increases stakeholder confidence in the project. In fact and effective QMS helps ensure that optimal project outcomes are realized both in terms of project delivery and life cycle performance. The two key components of QMS are quality control and quality assurance. Quality Control (QC) is the procedure implemented to achieve a certain level of quality and ensure that products, processes and services meet specific requirements. Quality Assurance (QA) activities are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the quality control measures and ensure that the QC process is working. A team obligation that recognizes that quality is built into every aspect of a project is the basic concept of a successful QMS."

Quartz crystals are the raw material from which are made the crystal units utilized in filters and oscillators so vital to the performance of all long distance communications systems. These devices act as the heart of equipment that permits a single telephone cable to carry hundreds of conversations simultaneously. Quartz crystals are of value in communications because of this piezoelectric nature, that is when an electric signal is applied to the quartz, there is a resulting mechanical motion and conversely, a mechanical stress results in an electrical output signal. A plate cut from a quartz crystal will oscillate at some specific frequency, which is determined by the physical dimension of the plate. During the early stages of telephony, all quartz plates were cut from natural quartz, which was imported mainly from Brazil. Since the source of this important raw material was based upon a foreign supply which is located at a great distance from the user and could be vulnerable in time of a national emergent, it became necessary to maintain a large inventory of this strategic material. Also due to the considerable cost of natural crystals of a size and quality suitable for Bell System use, an investigation was made by Bell Laboratories into the possibility of developing a substitute material. The effort was successful and led to a joint development program between Bell Laboratories and Western Electric. This program brought about the design of manufacturing facilities capable of producing large quantities of cultured quartz at Western's Merrimack Valley Works, No. Andover, Massachusetts.

The somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is in most mines today still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners, as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. Figure No. I illustrates the point at which shuttle car haulage distance determines unit productivity rather than the productive capacity of the miner. Continuous mining is never realized. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Company working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form a unbroken link, at all times, between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor, and an extensible panel conveyor. The following areas of discussion will be covered during the review of this development. I. In this paper I use the term "industrial minerals" in its broad general sense, and I distinguish two main groups. The first consists of the bulk materials, characterized by low unit price, nearness of deposits to markets, relatively simple methods of extraction and processing, and a tendency to be closely related to the construction industries. The second group includes those materials valued for exceptional purity, or for some special property such as hardness, immunity to acids, or dielectric strength. These materials are produced in smaller amounts, at high unit values, from deposits notably restricted in. distribution; and they require more or less sophisticated methods of production and beneficiation. The applications of this second group are not closely tied to any particular part of the economy. From the way in which the commodity committees of the Industrial Minerals Division are set up, I take it that the chief interest of most members is with the first group of materials mentioned above. Hence this paper will deal mainly, though not exclusively, with such bulk commodities as sand and gravel, clay, and stone. The first word in the title of the paper also requires brief explanation. It is here given a threefold interpretation. First is the role of the industrial minerals themselves in industry; this would probably be taken as the conventional meaning of the title* The second is the role of the industrial-mineral producers as citizens of the community. The third is what may be called the scientific role of these producers.

Flotation data indicate that sulfonate and dodecylamine adsorb physically on Mn02 at ambient temperature. Oleate also adsorbs physically if the zero-point-of-charge of the Mn02 is sufficiently high. Chemisorption of oleate apparently occurs between pH 8 and 9, and this phenomenon is enhanced considerably at elevated temperature.

Small tonnage ore bodies can be developed at a profit on a short life basis. Such is the case of the Bardon Mine in. the Big Indian Mining District in San Juan County. Utah. Faced with a small initial tonnage of high grade uranium ore, the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation Engineers developed some new ideas for sinking the shaft and planned extraction to warrant the capital risk to mine a limited reserve. The Bardon Mine is located fifty miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the south end of the Big Indian Mining -district. Shattuck Denn Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation, manages and operates the property under an operating agreement with Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc. of. Oklahoma City. Oklahoma, and Anderson Development Corporation of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Based. on Kerr-McGee drilling., a tabular ore body about 350 feet long by 250 feet wide with an average thickness in excess of seven feet was indicated.- The ore body strikes easterly-westerly and dips from nine to twelve degrees to the south. Uraninite is the dominant uranium ore mineral associated with vanadium. The ore occurs in an arkosic conglomeratic sandstone with some interfingering of mudstone and shale in the Mossback member of the Chinle formation in contact with the underlying Cutler formation. The ore horizon is overlain with 40 to 60 feet of mudstone and shale. Fortunately, the back. immediately over the ore is a reasonable competent shaley sandstone which has made a fairly good. environment for roof bolting.

Recent publications indicate that there is a rising interest in the field of mining method selection, and increasing efforts are being undertaken to develop satisfying solutions. Yet, computer assistance for mining method selection (MMS), or in other, terms assistance in the (pre-)feasibility state of a project, still lags behind the computer application in other mining activities. This is true for research as well as for application. This paper is intended as a contribution to the development in computer-assisted mining method selection, and focuses especially on underground hard-rock mining. It is structured in four main parts. The first deals with general aspects of mining method. selection within the process of mine planning, and with problems and requirements which derive from this specific situation. In the second part some numerical MMS-approaches hitherto published are briefly introduced, and investigations on these approaches are discussed. Based on .these experiences, in the third part an analysis of the complex system MMS is presented. It focuses on heuristics, influencing factors, objectives, assessment-routines and mining methods, and emphasizes the essential necessity of a profound mining method description (MMD) specially developed for the requirements of MMS and numerical processing. Accordingly the fourth part of this paper presents a mining method description model developed at the Department of Mining Engineering, Montan-University Leoben (MUL), Austria. It describes the consequences of the investigation, in particular the new mining method description model, on 'the design of a MMS-system. The paper closes with a outlook on the possibilities of an successful MMS-system being realised.

Hydromagnesite (Mg5(CO3).(OH)2.4H20), one of the sedimentary deposits in Salda Lake Basin, is developed under the control of active tectonics regime. Since the occurrence and deposition mechanism of hydromagnesite are unstable under atmospheric conditions, in order to evaluate the precipitation process, systematic host rock, lake water (surface, 20m, 40m, 60m) and hydromagnesite sampling were carried out. Macro, micro, XRD and chemical investigations were done in detail. Not only the results and formation and crystallization mechanism but also hydromagnesite's St values were evaluated. Main resources could be ultramaficmafic surrounding rocks for hydromagnesite formations. However, hydromagnesite development is considered in different phases, because it has showed various characteristics in Kayadibi and Köpekcayin areas. In Kayadibi area Huntide-Dolomite-Aragonite-Hydromagnesite paragenesis has been realized. Hydromagnesite has also formed in Köpekcayiri area, large amount of hyrdomagnesite occurrences and levels various are noticeable. Actual position of hydromagresite levels exhibits tectonic influences in and around the lake. Therefore, the levels seems to exhibit secondary formation properties. In addition, the formations are being still maintained sedimentation as products of a peripheral deposition phases. Resolving and redifferentiation sedimentation processes probably improve in periods of lake water chemistry especially Ca/Mg proportional changes, and also SI variations indicate the mentioned precipitation mechanism. Similarly, side and into the lake hydromagnesite is stored different levels and ultramafics-mafics rocks fallow indicated stages. It is postulated that hydromagnesite formation, which is existed by result of determined developments and multiphase sedimentation, could be originated from probable crack zones on the lake bottom.

The Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation Limited (RTZ), through it exploration company Riofinex, commenced exploration for bauxite in the Amazonia region of Brazil during 1970. Following' encouraging indications, exploration licences were taken out and an exploration programme was initiated In February 1975, a preliminary 'feasibility report indicated that a project, based on the Miltonia plateau located close to the town of Paragominas in the State of Para, was viable and that barging might offer an economic solution to getting the product to an ocean-going port. A, decision was taken in April 1975 to proceed with a full feasibility study. In the latter stages of the study, an engineering consortium of Mendes Junior and Bechtel do Brasil was employed to review, and modify if necessary, the concepts that RTZ had developed for the project's operation. With these concepts agreed, the consortium was requested to make capital and operating cost estimates, and these became available during February 1978. The deposit is being developed by a Brazilian company Mineracao Vera Cruz S.A. (MVC) in which the present share-holding is owned 64 percent by RTZ and 36 percent by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD). RTZ is a British based international group of mining and industrial companies with interests in almost every major metal and fuel. CVRD is a Brazilian mining company, 85 percent owned by the Brazilian Government, with a major interest in iron ore and also other non-ferrous metals. It is intended, in due course, that the company will become majority owned by Brazilian interests.

Alkaline pressure oxidation (POX) is an oxidative pre-treatment option that is commercially used for high-carbonate sulfidic gold ores. The high carbonate grades within the feed ore shifts the ideal operating pH to a basic regime. Compared with acidic POX, alkaline POX typically requires additional steam input due to a lower sulfur oxidation load and a high rate of in-situ carbon dioxide generation that needs to be vented along with steam. The cost of this steam addition is the largest differentiator between acid POX operation and alkaline POX from a cost comparison. However, alkaline POX can offset these costs through reduced acid usage for pre-acidulation and decreased alkali reagent consumption for subsequent neutralization. This paper reviews the specific operating cost impacts of acid/base consumption between alkaline and acidic POX with ores which require pre-acidulation, the overall economics of alkaline POX, and the regimes in which alkaline POX is economically favorable. The findings aim to guide industry professionals in making informed decisions for alkaline POX adoption by providing a summary view of its operational benefits and costs, contributing to the development of cost-effective and sustainable gold ore processing techniques.

Foreword Sir William Halcrow and Partners are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as Sub-contractor to the Contractor, Osmac, a joint venture formed by the Arab Contractors, Osman Ahmed Osman and Company of Cairo, and Tarmac International of London. Throughout the paper the term "Client" refers to the Employer, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction, which latterly became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Arab Republic of Egypt. At the time of writing of this paper only a few hundred metres of the tunnel have been driven, but the design is substantially complete. Introduction The Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, which is at present under construction, will be a two-lane tunnel crossing beneath the Suez Canal approximately 15 km north of the town of Suez at El Shallufa. It will become the first permanent connection across the Canal since 1967 and is visualised by the Egyptian Government as an early step in the development of the Sinai Desert along the eastern bank. The tunnel will carry pipelines for treated water and electric power cables to assist in this development. The tunnel, which will be 1640 m in length, is being driven through hard clay and mudstone using a tunnel shield fitted with hydraulic excavators. The primary lining is being constructed with precast, bolted reinforced concrete segments with an internal diameter of 10.4 m. The road deck structure and the walls of the air supply ducts beneath it are formed with precast, reinforced concrete units erected immediately behind the shield.

The January 1988 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal includes two short articles on blasting practices in surface gold mines (Anon., 1988 ; Carr , 1988). A reader of these articles learns, among other things, that a "12 x 13 ft" blasting pattern is used at the Carson Hill Mine, and a "17-ft burden and 18-ft spacing" is used at Echo Bay Mineral's Borealis operation, while at Mascot's Nickel Plate Gold Mine "ore shots are on a 10 x 10 ft" pattern. Like a new edition of the World Book Almanac, these articles are overflowing with useful tidbits of technical data; but, they never mention why the particular blasting patterns were selected. A survey carried out during the Winter of 1988 at six surface gold mines in the western United States also failed to produce a satisfactory answer. The responses from mine planning engineers to the question "why is your blasting pattern X by Y", reduced to "we use X by Y here because we used X by Y at our last operation, and it worked ok." Certainly, with the available decades of experience and professional practice in blast holes design, rock fragmentation in surface mines has been thoroughly investigated. However, and this is the central issue, fragmentation of the rock is not the primary purpose of most rotary drill holes in surface gold mines. Several significant past and present producers of high grade and bulk tonnage gold ore from southeastern California and southwestern Arizona can be empirically and genetically linked to regional peraluminous magmatism which occurred during the late Cretaceous and early Tertiary. Geological relationships and geochemical characteristics from the Fortuna Mine area will be described and compared to those of the Tumco Mines area. Each of these historical gold producers is viewed as a morphologic end member in otherwise genetically linked metallogeny. Cold-quartz veins at Fortuna can be directly linked to peraluminous pegmatites both physically and mineralogically. Silica-magnetite±spidote±garnet rock which occurs as relatively barren, discontinuous, foliation- parallel horizons at Fortuna, but as high grade gold ore at Tumco, is interpreted as replacement of calcareous units during the same episode of peraluminous magnatism responsible for the gold vein mineralization. Whole rock and trace element data from pagmatites and aplites of the Fortuna and Tumco areas, together with data from the Gunnery Range batholith of southwestern Arizona, indicate that the magma series (after Keith, 1984) responsible for the gold metallogeny is peraluminous calcic, and is quite rich in sodium.
