The construction of the La Joya hydropower plant (Costa Rica) was awarded by the Spanish power company, Union Fenosa, to the Italian Joint Venture formed by the companies SELI SpA and Ghella SpA. The project, located in a mountainous region of central Costa Rica, includes a 7.9-km-long head race tunnel having an excavation diameter of 6.18 m. A double-shielded TBM was selected to perform the tunnel excavation, which involved mainly volcanic rocks in variable but generally very weak conditions. The tunnel crossed long and continuous sections in completely weathered rock masses with no residual cohesion and with high water inflows. The paper describes and analyzes: The special methods adopted to overcome these sections with the TBM includ-ing face stabilization by chemical grout and foams as well small by-pass tunnels in the crown combined with TBM advance/support The grouting design and the grouting method that was implemented to meet the waterproof design specifications and restore the original groundwater level in the mountain The additional geological investigations performed to improve the knowledge of the rock mass in front of the TBM and the outcomes of these investigations The performance of the TBM in different ground conditions and on average along the entire tunnel Finally, the author’s comment about the possibility of implementing and improving the technologies experimented with in this project in future similar applications.

A large lab apparatus was designed using a scale-down methodology based on the design legacy of the current FLSmidth commercial forced air flotation machines. This new apparatus, along with a new test methodology, was used to evaluate new rapid prototype concepts. The apparatus was designed to monitor bubble size, power, pumping capacity, Jg, velocity profiles, froth character, and tip speed. The methodology developed follows a sequence that goes from hydrodynamic tests and solids suspension tests to a flotation kinetic test. This methodology has been demonstrated to be a good tool to determine the effect of machine design changes on flotation.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for assessing underground coal mines for high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and MSHA citation data were combined into a Safe Performance Index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performances as compared to large and medium-sized mines.

Presupposition for realizing the vision of SANDVIK for zero harm for working with SANDVIK equipment is the installation of the appropriate processes. Into the product engineering and product development processes of Sandvik Mining and Construction, a specific "Product Safety Process" has been integrated, where all safety related activities like identification of all life cycle hazards, risk management and safety verification / validation are planned, performed and documented. Product safety shall be „designed into" the products. Therefore, specific research activities have been started, to address the safety and health related topics for the development and for the engineering of SANDVIK mining machines."

An analysis method for modeling compensation grouting based on the finite element method is presented. By this method the design parameters of compensation grouting, grouting pressure and grouting volume, can be evaluated. Also the subsidence of a building due to tunnel driving as well as the lifting of the building by compensation grouting can be simulated. The stress changes in the tunnel lining and in the foundation of the building are computed as well. The application of the analysis method is demonstrated on two examples for compensation grouting in combination with construction of tunnels.

Carbon dioxide sequestration by conversion to carbonates has become a promising option for CO2 storage. Experiments were conducted to determine the feasibility of CO2 sequestration at ambient conditions using a Ca-rich industrial waste in a carbonate solution. The Ca-rich industrial waste used in this study was lignite fly ash. Fly ash was chosen because it is cheap, available near large CO2 point sources, already in powder form, and reactive due to amorphous properties. In the experimental set-up, CO2 absorption was inferred by monitoring feed and exhaust gas CO2 concentrations. The addition of an alkali to a fly ash-distilled water solution provided a 50% increase in CO2 absorption of the solution. Absorption time also increased by 50% compared to a fly ash-distilled water solution. TGA analysis was used to determine the extent of CO2 sequestration in the carbonate form. At a liquid to solid ratio of 20:1, the conversion of ?free? calcium to carbonates was 75%. A CO2 balance on the system concluded that at the current operating conditions 42% of the total CO2 fed to the system was sequestered in the carbonate form. SEM-EDS analysis of the fly ash particles before and after reaction with CO2 indicated that the carbonate compound being formed was calcium carbonate. The analysis identified rhomboidal structures on the surface of the fly ash particles after reaction with CO2, but not before. These rhomboids are characteristic of calcium carbonate formation and they had higher Ca, C, and O concentrations than the host spheres, suggesting calcium carbonate formation.

The study evaluates the hydrological behaviour of exposed and covered waste rock dumps. The objectives were to determine the major factors influencing unsaturated flow in waste rock dumps and covers, and to improve the in-situ, laboratory and numerical modeling characterization methods. Using material properties obtained from in-situ and laboratory tests, waste rock dumps of different configurations, with and without covers, were modeled. It was found that a properly designed “Store, divert and release” (SDR) cover allows most of the water to be diverted downslope and discharged outside of the waste rock dumps. The SDR cover seems to work efficiently even in extreme storm events. The numerical modeling results show that the unsaturated hydraulic properties (e.g. air entry value and water entry value) of the materials largely control the infiltration of water into waste rock dumps.

In this study, the flotation performances of ethoxycarbonyl thionocarbamate (ECTC), dialkyl thionocarbamate (DATC) and xanthate copper sulfide collectors are compared by the structure-reactivity relationship using generalized perturbation theory and density functional calculation at the B3PW91/6-31G(D) level. The electron-donating power of xanthates is strong and, therefore, xanthates can strongly react with metal cation on the surfaces of copper and iron sulfide minerals through the formation of normal covalent bonds. This explains the poor selectivity of xanthates and also the high pH levels (above 13) required for the flotation separation of copper/iron sulfide minerals. DATCs are more selective for copper sulfide flotation, particularly against gangue iron sulfides. Although less powerful than xanthates, DATCs can perform copper/iron flotation separation at lower operating pH (commonly at pH levels below 11.5). ECTCs use an ethoxycarbonyl replacing an alkyl N-substituent in DATCs. The presence of the ethoxycarbonyl group effectively changes the functional group of collector from -C(=S)NH- to -C(=S)NHC(=O)-. The strong electron-withdrawing ethoxycarbonyl group adjacent to the C=S group decreases the electron density of the sulfur atom, which improves ECTC?s selectivity against iron sulfide minerals at slightly alkaline conditions. The lowest unoccupied molecular orbit (LUMO) of ECTC, which is constituted by the pz-orbit of every atoms in the conjugate -O-C(=O)-N-C(=S)-O- group and which is pleased with accepting richly d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) from the (t2g)6(eg)3Cu(II) or t6e4Cu(I) configuration of copper cation on the surfaces of copper sulfide minerals, resulted in the formation of dative p-bond. The iron atom, which has a (t2g)6Fe(II) or (t2ga)3(ega)2 Fe(III) configuration on the surfaces of iron sulfide minerals (Fe(III) is the predominant composition at alkaline conditions), has difficulty in offering its d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) to ECTC?s LUMO. ECTC collectors are powerful for copper sulfide minerals and very selective against iron sulfides, which has been further confirmed by UV spectra and bench-scale and industrial-scale flotation tests.

The soils included 65 m of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2, 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30standard penetration test SPT blows per 300 mm, and 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2. The river crossing, utilizing 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x600 mm steel casing pipe without intermediate jacking stations, was part of a seven kilometer liquefied natural gas (LNG) transmission line in South Korea. This 440-m, 1,442-ft, river crossing was microtunneled through three different ground conditions and completed in just over three months. The crossing was achieved with an average of 25 m of ground cover and 15 m of water cover. The Kwang Yang River Crossing was part of a 7 km liquefied natural gas pipeline project for POSCO, a Korean steel producer. The microtunneling machine was custom built for this project. The microtunneling machine selected for this project was tooled with 7 button bits and 2 roller bits. None of the cutter bits were replaced during the drive. Inside the machine, before the spoils laden slurry was pump back to the surface, it would pass through an independent cone crusher. The crusher is placed in the slurry flow to make sure that none of the spoils are so large as to stop the return flow of the slurry. An additional requirement was for the inclusion of a compressed air lock. The air lock was required in the event that the cutter tools required replacement. The cutters were back loaded so that the workers would have access to change the cutters in the event of cutter failure or wear out. No intermediate jacking stations were installed for the drive. The soils included 65 meters of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and 20 mm/minute. The second zone contained 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30 standard penetration test (SPT) blows per 300 mm with production averaging between 80 and 180 mm/minute. The third zone contained 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and20 mm/minute. The steel casing pipe was 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x 6000 mm long. Inter-Mountain Labs, IML, performed a study comparing mining waste rock sample analysis by Net Carbonate Value (NCV) and Modified Sobek acid-base accounting procedures. The study looked at 468 waste rock samples and compared the data for Neutralization Potential (NP), Acid Generation Potential (AGP), Net Neutralization Potential (NNP), and the ratio of NP/AGP. The study found that a majority of the samples were below 50 Tons CaCO3/kTons. This subset of ?low-level? samples was also examined separately for Acid Base Accounting parameters. The analysis compared the NCV procedures to the Modified Sobek procedures and concludes that the NCV procedures are as protective of the environment as Modified Sobek procedures.

Enhanced gravity separators (EGS) provide a more efficient separation than froth flotation when cleaning coal in the 150 x 25 µm particle size range. To improve the performance of an EGS unit, air bubbles were injected into the feed stream in an attempt to decrease the apparent density of the coal particles due to the formation of bubble-coal particle agglomerates. Air injection had a significant impact on operating characteristics and separation performance. Coal recovery was increased by 10 to 20 absolute percentage points while a 2 percentage point drop in the minimum product ash content was also achieved.

NIOSH has developed an active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels which are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible, and vibratory indicators and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak, and on a highwall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed and proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

South Africa?s primary electricity supplier, Eskom, provides incentives to reduce power demand during critical times by granting capital through a Demand Side Management programme. DSM encourages the end user to review and optimize energy consuming systems and use capital, provided by Eskom, to purchase or modify the equipment required to achieve a load-shift. As part of the DSM agreement the mine ultimately acquires the capital equipment and benefits from reduced power costs, but in return is required to sustain the load-shift tactic for up to five years. The paper focuses on one DSM tactic, main fan energy management. In this case, reduced air flows during selected peak and off peak periods, results in a substantial reduction in peak power demand. DSM incentives provided capital for automated main fan control as well as improved control of the mine ventilation systems. To examine the work in detail Gold Fields Ltd Driefontein gold mine near Johannesburg was chosen as a case study.

Introduction The porphyry copper deposit “Borska Reka” is the biggest undeveloped deposit in the Timok Magmatic Complex (TMC). Total reserve calculated manually is 611 Mt (cut-off grade 0.3% Cu) of 0.62% Cu, 0.21 g/t Au and 1.81 g/t Ag and 869 Mt of 0.58% Cu, 0.14 g/t Au and 1.11 g/t Ag using software. But since several deep drill holes are suspended in high grade (0.7% Cu) porphyry, total reserves could exceed 1Gt. The massive sulfide is also detected in the central (12 m at 4% Cu) and the bottom of porphyry style. Deposit was discovered during geologic exploration of deeper part of the Bor copper and gold deposit, i.e. area of high sulfidation with dominant massive sulfides. During exploitation of massive sulfide, constant explorations were carried out aimed at the expansion of reserve and discovery of new ore bodies. In that way, porphyry copper mineralization was discovered without knowing in the beginning that it was different mineralization type in regard to the ones that had been already identified and exploited. Vertical extension of porphyry is 0 m up to -1000 m sea level and not contoured along plunge. In the very beginning (1976), the exploration was focused on the shallow part of porphyry. That is because block caving method of massive underground mining was not developed at that time. Up to 1999, most of activity was related to underground exploration up to level -395 m. Geographic position The Bor deposit is located close to the industrial and University town Bor, which has over 50,000 inhabitants (census made in the year 2002). Apart from the Bor Mines, industrial complex of Mining & Smelting Basin Bor (RTB) comprises also a copper smelter (installed capacity up to 160,000 tons of blister copper) and tank house, copper wire factory, copper tube factory etc. Currently, RTB Bor is under privatization process that is going to be completed by the end of 2006. Up to date, over 20 companies have bought tender documentation.

Bortech’s BoreClad corrosion protection system will be displayed at MINExpo. BoreClad is an innovative system for inside diameter cladding of nozzles, tubes and other circumferential devices. Pressure vessels, mud pumps and other mining equipment must be protected from corrosive caustic chemicals. Usually manufactured from mild steel, they can be clad with a protective material, such as stainless steel, to provide corrosion resistance. However, most welding processes leave voids where corrosion can damage the base metal. BoreClad provides void-free welds by combining gas metal arc welding with automated feed and rotation of chuckable parts. Workpieces of up to 915-mm- (36-in.-) long with a 460-mm- (18-in.-)swing can be clad with stainless steel, Iconel or other exotic metals. It is uncommon these days to read a business magazine or newspaper without finding a reference to Knowledge Management (KM), and its critical importance to corporate success. One definition of KM is: “getting the right knowledge to the right people at the right time and helping them to put information into action in such ways that strive to improve organizational performance.” In the minerals processing industry we could assert that we have been practicing this for years through effective operator training. In most cases we would probably be wrong. Training has certainly filled the need of addressing safety and basic operational issues, but we must collectively focus on education (learning), and the difference, as measured in outcomes, is not at all subtle. This paper briefly examines the history of training and education in the mining industry, and looks in more detail at the impact of one company’s approach to empower its workforce, while keeping the ultimate goal clearly in mind: “The great end of knowledge is not knowledge, but action.” (T.H. Extruded Concrete Lining combines technological and financial advantages. The tunnel lining is reliably embedded in the surrounding ground as the fluid concrete is extruded at constant pressure directly behind the TBM supporting the exposed surface. Ground deformation from the TBM passage can be compensated and the ground will be pre-stressed by the extrusion process. Developments in concrete technology permit high speed tunneling by use of a slip formwork attached to the TBM. Realised projects in Milano (Italy), Lyon (France), Frankfurt (Germany) and Akima (Japan) will be demonstrated.

This paper will present detailed design drawings of a flexible single floor residential superstructure proposed for both longwall and room and pillar mining conditions. All efforts were made to provide an immediately available economical alter- native for future home builders on subsidence prone land. Based on this fact, a basement was not included in the design because additional costs and measures would be required to minimize cracking and leakage. A cost comparison with a traditional superstructure demonstrated that this would be a cost effective alternative. The criteria used to determine the design of the residential structure was as follows: 1. The appearance should not be different then a typical three bedroom residence; 2. Only commercially available devices and present architectural and engineering technology should be used to achieve the required "flexibility" of the super- structure; 3. The structure as completed would be capable of resisting a predetermined amount of vertical and horizontal movement; and 4. If the structure was to experience stresses beyond its capabilities, it could be easily removed from the foundation and releveled.

The economic success and growth of any metropolitan region depends on mobility. Today, mobility between New Jersey and New York is threatened by a transportation system that cannot meet 21st century travel demands. The transportation bottleneck created by the Hudson River threatens the viability of one of the world?s great centers of commerce and culture. Fortunately, there is a solution: The Access to the Region?s Core Mass Transit Tunnel. The US$8.7-billion Mass Tran-sit Tunnel?s (MTT) new two-track line will double commuter rail capacity under the Hudson and create a new, state-of-the-art cavern station in Midtown Manhattan, with wide platforms, high-speed escalators and other features to improve riders? travel experience. The capacity and other benefits of the MTT project will launch a new era of prosperity for the region, just as the Pennsylvania Railroad did almost 100 years ago when it built the existing two, single-track rail tunnels that now form the sole commuter rail link between New Jersey and New York. The existing tunnels run from North Bergen, NJ, under the Hudson River to Pennsylvania Station at 33rd Street in Manhattan. Construction on the MTT, the largest public works project in the United States, is scheduled to start this year and continue through 2017. The MTT is ready to go to construction thanks to a major commitment of financial, engineering, project management and other resources from NJ TRAN-SIT, New Jersey?s statewide mass transit agency, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bistate agency that operates the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and other major transportation facilities in New York and New Jersey. The project is also strongly supported by the state governments of New York and New Jersey, as well as that of New York City. The MTT is New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine?s number one transportation priority.
