"ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH HAND DRILLING/JACKLEGS In coal mines, hand held air, electric, and hydraulic powered drills are used along belt conveyors, in single entry development, in entries where there are obstructions, and in long wall recovering bolting. In hard rock mines pneumatically powered “jack leg” drills are typically used in narrow vein mining. Drilling and bolting in narrow confines has traditionally been performed with pneumatically or hydraulically powered hand-held drills or newer electrically powered hand held hammer due to their low cost, simplicity of operation, and extreme flexibility due to their small size. Mechanized equipment has typically been too large, too expensive, inefficient due to the confined space, and too restrictive due to lack of flexibility for use in narrow confines. Although the hand-held equipment is effective, it requires operator exposure to certain inherent hazardous conditions in use. These include falling rock from the roof, rib, and face; tripping hazards; bending twisting lifting hazards; high noise levels; and chemical fumes from the pneumatic exhaust. The operation of the hand held equipment can adversely affect the long-term health of the operator – continual jackleg operation frequently results in long term damage to hearing, shoulders, arm and wrist joints, and back injuries. This results in a reduction in life style for the operator and higher personnel turnover rates for the mining company. Hand held drills also typically have limited thrust and torque capability which limits their ability to push long resin bolts, inadequate torque to properly install resin bolts, or to properly torque mechanical or tensioned rebar bolts. Hand held drills do not offer any type of protection for the operator from roof or rib falls. They do not offer any means for handling roof or rib mesh. Since the operator stands on the ground the maximum safe drilling height without use of a ladder or “riding the drill” is limited to 8’ (2.44M)."

The Regional Copper-Nickel Study examined the potential impacts of copper-nickel sulfide mining, concentrating and smelting operations in northeastern Minnesota and gathered extensive monitoring data on the ecological characteristics of the region's aquatic and terrestrial biota. Because of the many development options possible, the diversity of the region's ecology, and the uncertainty of future environmental regulatory requirements, the Study did not attempt to measure the magnitude of environmental impacts on specific biological communities from a specific development proposal. The Study provides a broad base of environmental resource and impact information that hopefully will assist mining developers and environmental regulators when assessing specific proposals in the future. The following discussion is not a description of what will happen if copper-nickel development occurs in northeastern Minnesota but an exploration of why certain potential aspects of such development should be carefully considered and adequately understood before unnecessary or irreversible decisions are made.

Mountain Pass, California is located 96 km southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has an exposed surface orebody within view of Interstate Highway 15. Mineral prospecting in this region dates back to about 1860 followed by the discovery and subsequent mining (1870-1895) of silver bearing veins on the north slope of nearby Clark Mountain. In contrast to the four lane divided interstate highway of today, all supplies needed for mining during this early history were transported by wagons from San Bernardino which is 320 km west. Many small lead mines were active in the area during 1917-20, and a small gold mine operated in 1941-42 within 100 m of the orebody presently being worked. In 1949 two prospectors searching for uranium with a Geiger counter discovered a radioactive vein outcrop at Mountain Pass. Further investigation revealed the presence of a large amount of a light-brown, heavy mineral to a depth of about 2 m. A sample of this unidentified mineral was submitted to the Boulder City, Nevada, U.S. Bureau of Mines where a spectroscope examination shoved high level rare earth oxides, carbon dioxide, and fluorine. These results indicated the mineral was bastnasite.

In 1873 Barton tines Corporation mining Garnets for Abrasives. From providing bulk Garnet Concentrate the technology has advanced to the sizing and classification of micron sized particles utilizing a Barton process. Processing of Garnet involves extensive quality control at all steps, first to insure product purity and secondly to insure the correct size range. Barton Mines produces about 30 different sizes of Garnet products to lead the world in the manufacture of technical abrasive Garnet. This paper will examine the present technology of Garnet Abrasive Manufacture and the specification to which the sizes are produced as well as some of the markets served.

The effect of addition of a flotation collector (dodecylammonium chloride) on grinding of quartz has been studied. The data obtained are correlated with the results of tests conducted under similar chemical conditions to study influence of these additives on relevant basic sub-processes (primary breakage, pulp fluidity, and dispersion and flocculation of ground products). Such correlations suggest that the role of chemical additives in grinding is determined by their cumulative influence on the above mentioned basic properties of the system.

Robot Supported Moulding—this is the name of Herrenknecht Formwork’s entry to the world of automated segment production. What had been considered impossible for a long time, has been achieved by Herrenknecht experts together with the Swiss company Marti AG: unmanned segment production on the working line. The moulds open and close autonomously with the help of a hydraulic system. A robot cleans and greases the moulds at one work station and inserts the injection sockets at another. The next step will include further automation and digital networking of all processes from production to installation in the tunnel.

A recent coal mine elevator accident resulted in serious injuries to four passengers. The miners struck the ceiling of the elevator car as it collided into the overhead structure at an estimated speed four times faster than normal. In response to mine hoisting accidents, safety authorities have required additional protective devices on new and existing mine hoists and elevators. This paper examines supplemental safety circuits and new devices designed to provide ascending car overspeed protection on mine hoists and elevators. These devices provide needed protection that eliminates the hazard or significantly reduces the potential of a mine hoisting accident.

One of the most persistent topics at technical gatherings and in the recent scientific press has been the reduction of iron ore. To cite some of them, in May 1960, a symposium on the subject was sponsored by the Electrochemical Society. The proceedings, comprising two dozen papers, were later published.3/ More recently, November 1966, a similar gathering took place at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich. The latest meeting was the International Congress on Production and Utilization of Reduced Materials, Evian, France, May 1967. If the volume of literature, symposia and conferences is a measure of industry concern, then current interest must be at a high level. To the casual observer of the metallurgical scene, the abiding and recurring attention to iron ore reduction outside the blast furnace must be somewhat puzzling in that so much research endeavor has resulted in so little commercial activity.

Due to the world's ever increasing minerals and energy demands, process plants have to cope economically with ever growing throughput rates. This trend has accelerated the development of high capacity vibrating screens. Screens with screening areas of 30 to 50 square meter (322 to 540 square feet) and width of 5.5 meter (18') are technically possible and are being used presently with great success. This paper will concern itself with the general aspects of large screen design, by using modern technology and the latest findings with regards to fatigue strengths relative to the laws of vibration. It also will investigate the technical and economical limits of such designs.

The paper gives a comprehensive review of the design considerations which determined the choice of the milling plant, a description of the plant and comment on the operating experience to date. Operating experience will include inter alia a description of the mill liners installed with subsequent changes due to wear patterns, the mill inlet sealing arrangement, steel ball addition, mill outlet sump design, cyclone feed pump liner wear patterns and comment on the efficiency of the linear screens for wood chip and tramp removal. Finally a view on future trends in South African milling practice with respect to type and size of plant.

Geological and hydrological conditions in the strata overlying the Salado Formation vary considerably in the Carlsbad, New Mexico area. The first four shafts sunk at international Minerals and Chemical Corporation's property have been located in competent and essentially dry conditions, while other shafts on adjacent properties have had such adverse conditions that ground freezing has been chosen as the water and ground control technique for shaft sinking. At the location of the IMC No. 5 Shaft there has been extensive-erosion and salt dissolution in the Rustler Formation which has led to collapse of some zones of the strata. Both ground freezing and pregrouting were considered as alternative methods of stabilizing the extremely poor ground conditions and controlling the potentially very heavy water inflows it was decided that pregrouting the shaft was feasible and would offer substantial cost and time saving over a ground freezing technique. This paper describes the pregrouting techniques used and illustrates the requirement for flexibility in a grouting program so that it can be codified to reflect any new or additional information which is obtained during the progress of the grouting.

A detailed laboratory study was carried out to investigate the effect of the particle size distribution on the grinding rate parameters, Si, for the dry ball milling of quartz and limestone. Contrary to the present belief, the Si values were found to vary strongly with the particle size distribution. In particular it was observed that: (i) the Si values increased with the fineness of the particulate charge - the increase being more pronounced in the case of the coarser sizes, (ii) the next finer size class had the maximum effect on the breakage of the particles of a given size class, while the coarser size classes had only a slight effect, (iii) the effect of two or more size classes was non-additive, and significant higher order inter-size interactions were indicated. The importance of these results in the context of the analysis, design and scale-up of the comminution systems is discussed.

The economics of the producer-consumer interface - the route from mine to market - impact much more severely on specialty industrial minerals, extender/fillers that have to be sold, than on commodity industrial minerals that are basically supplied. Working capital costs for inventories and accounts receivable, fixed capital costs for storage/ warehousing/distribution, and sales and marketing costs all make the extender/filler producer much more of a marketer than a miner. The future survival of an extender/filler producer will primarily depend on the skill he has in the economics of the interface.

The use of heavy media organic solvents to recover coal from its attendant gangue is hardly new. DuPont built a pilot plant using pentachloroethane in 1936 at Weston Coal Company, Weston Breaker, Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. That's almost half a century ago. Since that time, it has become common practice to utilize similar classes of chemicals in laboratory separations of coal samples. It is the objective of this paper to discuss some specific separations on both pilot and laboratory scale on samples representing different classifications of coal. These separations have been carried out on coarse (+4 M), middling (4 x 20 M), and fine (-20 M) coal samples. The coal samples tested include Pennsylvania anthracite; Pennsylvania, Indiana and Colorado bituminous; Wyoming sub-bituminous; and Texas lignite. Other chlorinated solvents were used to vary the specific gravity of separation.

This paper describes the results of a series of comparative studies in which polygonal, IDS, and kriging were compared for their local estimation accuracy. The specific objective of this study was to determine the impact that the particular nature of the mineralization has on the results of such comparative studies. The study was performed on simulated coal deposits and the evaluation parameter chosen was the coal thickness. For this study, many conditionally simulated deposits having different degrees of seam thickness continuity were first developed. Each simulated deposit covered an area of 30,000 ft x 30,000 ft which was, in turn, subdivided into 100 mine planning blocks of 3,000 ft x 3,000 ft in size. Thickness estimation was made for these mine planning blocks using surrounding DDH assays. In all cases tested, e.g., from a perfect continuity to a complete lack of continuity in coal seam thickness, kriging gave the best estimates among the three, followed by IDS and polygonal methods. As expected, the relative efficiency (i.e., superiority) of kriging over other estimators was highly dependent on the nature of mineralization.

Water is a most remarkable substance, essential for life of all kinds. As well as needing water to survive, man has always used it for agriculture, transportation, recreation, and many other things. When our country was young and inhabited by few people, the streams, rivers, and lakes were able to provide all the clean water needed by man and take away all the wastes created. However, with our growing population and an ever-increasing demand for goods and services, the public, industry, and government at all levels have become acutely aware of the need to manage the nation's water resources more efficiently. Abundant energy from many sources has helped this nation to become the greatest industrial nation in the world. Coal has contributed a major portion of this energy, generating electricity, running railroads, and maintaining national security during wartime. The result has been the highest standard of living in the world and a time of widespread economic prosperity. The use of water in coal mining is somewhat different from its use in most industries. With the exception of water used in cleaning plants, for underground dust control, and for fire protection, most of the water en- countered in coal mining operations serves no useful purpose. In other words, it is an undesirable element and must be removed, otherwise it will interfere with operations, cause potential water quality problems, and may even stop operations by flooding. In the past, removing water from working areas of most mines was usually a fairly simple matter. Pumps with piping were installed at sumps or low spots in the mine and the water was pumped to the surface or to drainage control facilities constructed for the operation. Ditches were often used to collect and drain the water by gravity to the outside or to main sumps for pump discharge. In either case, the water was allowed to flow into the nearest stream or river. The concept of "water is water' was generally accepted without too much concern for what was in the water since low-cost products and services, rather than clean water, were the public demand.

Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) regards "whole diesel exhaust" as "a potential occupational carcinogen." Threshold limit values (TLVs) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants CO, CO2, NO, N02, SO2 and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sampling these aerosols. The University of Minnesota and the USBM have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) that utilizes size selective, inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines that used diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine air quality. Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines. The mines used continuous miners and diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulageway and on haulage vehicles. Both full-and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments. These included the PDEAS and the micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) that sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters. Concentrations of CO, C02, NO, NO2 and SO2 were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed was 0.79 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3. DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.22 mg/m3.

Regional radiometric, magnetic and geologic data point to Copper Mountain as an area of general uranium favorability. Sub-regional radiometric and magnetic data direct interest to a specific section of an overthrust Precambrian granite. Detailed magnetic and resistivity surveys in this area show local targets of interest, one of which corresponds to Rocky Mountain Energy's North Canning deposit. On the basis of these data a second and previously untested target was drilled resulting in the intersection of uranium horizons similar to those at North Canning. This integrated geophysical approach can be used for uranium exploration in geologically similar areas.
