After a century of variable government-supplied housing on their cold, windswept lands, and facing extremely limited natural resources and no timber, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has launched a study into alternative housing approaches for their people. Considering that they have little more than the soil and limited river aggregates under their feet, the Tribe has elected to consider adobe and earthen-wall construction. Earthen construction is no stranger to the Sioux lands. Smaller tribes, including the Mandan, Arikira, and Hidatsa, lived here among the Sioux in earthlodges for centuries. Such earthlodge structures were not unlike the Southwestern jacal style-a framework of upright branches and branches covered with mud-employed by the Anasazi about A.D. 700-900. Indeed, the Sioux people themselves evolved from earlier earthlodge dwellers. Indigenous peoples in New Mexico, Arizona, and neighboring Mexico have used earthen-wall housing for many centuries, reinforcing Sioux observations that this is today an earth-friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach. The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservations also recently have conducted studies on earthen- wall construction. This paper describes the search for and evaluation of potential raw-material resources for earthen-wall/adobe construction on the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota. Significant resources of clay/silt materials (8 million tons in the Striped Cloud clay bed) suitable as adobe binders and sand-and-gravel aggregate (2.5 million tons) that could support earthen/adobe construction have been identified throughout the Fort Yates Flat area on the Reservation. Also addressed is how adobe and rammed-earth construction could add to the diversity of reservation construction and address future Tribal housing and other building needs.

Experiments have been conducted on a 76¬mm water-only cyclone treating cowl below 2 mm size having different proportion of -0.075 mm fines. The effect of cone angle of the cyclone (compound cone) has been analyzed on water split, separation of -0.075 mm fines, separation of coarse solids, and on separation behavior of individual size ructions of the feed. It has been noted from the results that there exists a linear relationship between the flow rate of water in the feed and flow rate of water reporting to overflow stream. This relationship is independent of the cone angle and, with changes in the fines content in the feed, only the intercept of the straight varies, keeping the slope constant. Further, it has also been found that the percentage of fines below 0.075 mm reporting to the overflow is directly proportional to the percentage of feed wafer reporting to the overflow. This relationship is found to be independent of the cone angle and the fines in the feed. The performance of the water-only cyclone has been analyzed by plotting partition curves for different experimental conditions. In addition to this, the Rosin-Rammler equation has been fitted to the partition curves of the hulk feed and individual size-fractions. Tile analysis of the results has revealed that the specific gravity of separation increases with increase in the cone angle of the cyclone while it decreases with increase in percent fines present in the feed. Mathematical relationships have been developed to relate the variation in SG50 with cone angle and percent fines in the feed.

The ever increasing costs of labor and supplies have made it imperative that operators of open pits look for some way in which to cope with these increases. One of the most logical ways to increase the efficiency of an operation is by the introduction of larger haulage equipment, as generally haulage costs are the greater portion of the over all expenses. These larger haulage units require larger shovel units. In the late 1930's and the early 1940's large mining, quarrying and heavy construction operations had more or less standardized on the 4 to 6 cubic yard shovels. During this same period the haulage units were generally 22 to 27 tons. Some ten years ago 9 - 13 cubic yard shovels along with plus 50 ton haulage units were introduced by manufacturers in an effort to enable operators to decrease costs.

In the past 30 years, there have been tremendous advancements in the uses and applications of column flotation. From their first use as final cleaners that could produce excellent grades at the cost of recoveries, columns are now being used in every stage of the flotation circuit as well as is SX-EW. Columns as roughers, final scavengers and even at the end of CIL circuits, are finding their way into the marketplace. Operational results of these new uses are presented. INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have been in use since the early 1950's in the U.S. (Hollingsworth, 1952) and the early 1960's in Canada (Trembley, Boutin, Wheeler, 1963). Application of column flotation has been somewhat diverse. In the early years, columns were used predominately for molybdenum cleaning in Canada and for phosphate flotation in the United States. Unfortunately, results met with skepticism and disdain as the columns were hard to operate, temperamental and although producing high grades, could not achieve acceptable recoveries. Since the inception of column flotation technology, the degree of knowledge for design and operation of columns has vastly improved. Despite improvements in the technology, there is still some reluctance by mineral producers to investigate the use of column flotation cells for processing stages other than cleaner flotation. This characterization is in part due to the proven advantage of flotation columns in reducing gangue entrainment in the froth product which results in higher grade products and/or fewer processing stages. Also, during the development of column technology, different types of spargers have been used with varying degrees of success. Furthermore, the general knowledge base of parameters affecting column flotation design and operation have advanced tremendously. Inefficient, or primitive, sparger design, coupled with the lack of column design and operating knowledge and experience, resulted in poor metallurgical and mechanical performance in many cases. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge caused many column installations to be characterized as failures. The industry felt that columns could not achieve high recoveries, especially when dealing with coarse particles. Therefore, columns were characterized as cleaners, where low recoveries could be tolerated as recirculating loads rather than direct losses and froth cleaning advantages of the quiescent column flotation regime could be realized. Fortunately for the minerals industry, some producers have stood at the forefront of technology and allowed the column to be utilized for new applications. In the last decade, column flotation applications have expanded to virtually every mineral system and plant location throughout the world. The expanded application of columns has generated a new wave of interest for processing various streams. One of the most notable is in the use of columns as rougher cells. This is of particular interest to "green-field" plants and plants where expansions are taking place. Here, metallurgical superiority can be combined with maximum capital and operating cost advantages for a rapid return on investment. The superior results experienced to date, have generated a cohesive vision of the future in mineral processing where flotation columns function as single stage primary separation devices (roughers) with a single stage cleaner, if necessary. The advantages of column flotation go far beyond their original uses. We now have seen columns used as final tail scavengers, in SX-EW plants and even at the end of CIL circuits. Some of these cases will be reviewed. CASE STUDIES In an attempt to show the diversification of column flotation to many facets of the mineral processing plant, a variety of case studies will be discussed. Some of these were designed by the authors while others have been provided by plant sources. It is important to note that in each successful case, the columns were designed using the author's design and scale-up approach. Settling a contract for process design involves a negotiation between the design engineers and the client. Clients wish to offload as much risk as possible by seeking various guarantees about the process performance. Design engineers respond with preconditions and qualifiers, believing that the risk must remain with those who stand to benefit. This paper presents the engineers? point of view on guarantee types and precedents, performance testing, damages that may be claimed, and remedies that can be provided with particular reference to the mining industry.

INTRODUCTION In exploration for rock tunnels, the geology should not only be described, but its effect on excavation and support assessed. It is not an easy task to correlate exploration results with support and excavation requirements, even when the exploration program is detailed and geologic conditions are relatively well known. Many of the significant geologic features are subtle and their effect is difficult to interpret from exploration results. However, in similar geologic settings, there are specific geologic features which will cause recurring support problems. Such features should be actively sought out when exploring in a given geologic setting. In blocky and seamy rock, the primary features controlling performance are the joints, shears, and shear zones. This paper describes the effect of such features on the formation and movement of rock wedges in tunnels driven in foliated metamorphic rocks in Washington, D. C. and New York City. In both areas the foliation commonly forms a N-S striking plane of weakness along which major shear zones, shears, and joints have formed. In addition, the structural history of the two areas has been similar, so that there are similarities in the orientation and character of the other major joint sets and shear zones in the rock mass. The observations were made in tunnels ranging from 10 to 70 ft in width and excavated at depths ranging from 80 to 800 ft. Most of the tunnels described were deep enough to be located in unweathered rock, or in rock only slightly weathered along joints and shears. The physical properties of clay-water systems depend on the complicated system of forces between the clay particles themselves, and between the clay particles and the ions in the liquid phase. The kind and distribution of ions in, on, and between the clay particles and the size and the shape of the particles are the basic factors determining the macroscopic behavior of clay-water systems. Understanding the system requires a knowledge of the nature of the clay particles, their size, structure, composition, and surface properties, and of the manner in which they interact with ions [and molecules] in the surrounding liquid [or other medium]. The validity of Professor Brindley's words (Brindley, 1958), written three decades ago in the context of making pottery, whitewares, and electrical porcelains, transcends time, and the basic message is perhaps all the more important in the considerably expanded use of ceramics for structural, thermal, tribological, electronic, and other applications. Silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and sialons have been studied in the last two decades for high- temperature structural and tribological applications, particularly for using in internal combustion engines. Titanates, zirconates and niobates of barium, strontium and lead, have high dielectric constants, and are extensively used in the formulations for making capacitors. Hexagonal ferrites (molecular formula MO.6Fe2O3) are in use for making permanent magnets for fabricating miniature motors, and for assembling loud speakers, particle accelerators etc. Cubic ferrites such as magnesium-zinc ferrite and nickel-zinc ferrite are used as transformer cores, and for other high-frequency applications. In this context, Richerson's recent book (Richerson, 1984) on the general scope of traditional and technical ceramics is a good starting point for an overview of contemporary ceramics technology. Glasses are a whole class of amorphous materials used widely as sintering aids, and for making glass-bonded ceramics and glass-ceramic composites. Composites are yet another burgeoning field where two or more particulate components are used for improving the performance of ceramics. For all these applications, the inorganic starting materials are almost always submicron and near-micron powders. Understanding the powders' physicochemical properties, and their surface chemical interactions with the surrounding liquid/gaseous medium is-necessary for making reliable ceramic parts at competitive prices. Even though ceramics science and engineering has attained its separate identity in universities and the industry, ceramists themselves would concede that ceramics science is a cross-disciplinary field, having incorporated and assimilated within itself many principles from several apparently disjointed disciplines. Principles of material science, graduate-level physics and chemistry, polymer science, surface and colloid chemistry, transport phenomena, particle technology, unit operations commonly used in chemical engineering and mineral processing, and statistics and applied mathematics are integral part of any ceramics curriculum in universities. Added to this is the fact that all bench-scale successes in making ceramic parts are to be scaled-up for larger throughput operations. Understanding and applying process engineering principles of comminution, classification, drying, calcination, etc. then becomes essential. CERAMIC FORMING: Despite the diversity of the materials and processes, conceptually, the steps involved in making ceramic parts have remained the same over several decades: The different components for making the pan (usually one or more powders plus other forming and sintering additives) are proportioned and mixed thoroughly, and the well-mixed formulations are consolidated into desirable shapes known as "green bodies." Usually binders such as wax, clay, organic polymers and surfactants, whether dispersed or dissolved in a suitable liquid are used during mixing the batch for giving strength for the green bodies. In the dried green state, the inorganic powders typically occupy only 55 to 60% of the bulk volume of the body, depending on the particle size distributions of the powders and the forming history, with mostly inter- particle voids accounting for the rest of the void volume. SINTERING: The formed bodies are then fired in high- temperatures kilns/furnaces during which the parts are exposed to a predetermined temperature profile, and "soaked" for a certain duration at the final high temperatures, typically between 1200 K and 1900 K, and then cooled to room temperature. The gaseous atmosphere in the furnace is controlled (oxidizing, reducing, or inert) when necessary. During the initial stages of firing, volatile liquids evaporate, and during the intermediate temperatures between 400 and 600 K, the the organic polymeric additives pyrolize and oxidize into water vapor, CO, C02, and other gases. At still high temperature, the glasses, when present, soften, and simultaneously, the ceramic particles rearrange into a network of grains with definite grain boundaries so as to reduce the total interfacial free

Cyanide leaching is the most common process employed in the majority of the gold extraction plants. These gold extraction plants naturally generate tailings and/or effluents that contain highly toxic cyanides, In geographic locations with excess precipitation and therefore net positive water balance, a portion of these tailings must be discharged. Before these highly toxic cyanide-containing effluents can be discharged to the waterways, cyanide and any other toxic substance must be destroyed. Geographic locations with high evaporation and low precipitation, as in the western USA, result in net negative water balance and therefore these plants can operate with a zero discharge option. However, with the current stringent environ­mental regulations and concerns for bird and wildlife mortality, even these operations may be required to partially treat their tailings to preclude potential harm to wildlife. Furthermore, heap leach opera­tions are now generally required to detoxify the heaps before abandonment. It is, there­fore, apparent that all gold extraction plants may be required to install some form of effluent treatment in order to achieve the above objectives,.

I consider it an honour to be the opening speaker in this afternoon's session on "Canadian Exploration". I also think it most appropriate that this joint meeting of the MMIJ and AIME should consider this subject, because Canada is a major exporter of mineral products and Japan and the United States are our two largest customers. Clearly, therefore, both countries have a valid interest in developments on the Canadian minerals scene. I represent the Mineral Development Sector of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. I will therefore speak from the point of view of the Federal Government. At this point I would like to acknowledge the help and constructive criticism I have received from several of my colleagues in Mineral Development Sector in the preparation of this paper. In any discussion of exploration in Canada, it is essential to emphasize at the outset that Canada has a federal system of government, with powers shared between Ottawa and the provinces. Under our constitution, the federal government has jurisdiction over the north, and over offshore areas, while the provinces own the natural resources within their boundaries. They control the systems of land acquisition for exploration and the terns under which mining titles are issued, and are therefore able to determine the rate and conditions of exploration and development of these resources. It follows that the Federal Government can influence the exploration and development of the provincial resources only indirectly by consultation with provincial authorities. However, once the resources are developed and begin to flow to market, the Federal Government can exert a much stronger influence because of its constitutional right to control both inter-provincial and international trade, as well as through its general fiscal and tax powers.

In the ten years since its discovery the Lac Tio ilmenite-hematite deposit has become one of the world's largest sources of titanium ore. The deposit lies 25 miles north Havre St, Pierre, a fishing village on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River some 400 miles northeast of Quebec City. In 1941, J, A, Retty made a reconnaissance survey of the region for the Quebec Department of Mines. His results, published in 1942 and 1944, described a number of small ilmenite occurrences on the shores of four lakes within the area. Several of these were staked by Montreal and Toronto interests, Two of the claim groups were later optioned by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Ltd, and a third by the New Jersey Zinc Company, During a detailed exploration program in 1946, Kennco geologists discovered eight ilmenite deposits, one of which was Lac Tio, the largest known body of ilmenite-hematite ore in the world. Quebec Iron and Titanium Corporation owned two-thirds by Kennecott and one-third by The New Jersey Zinc Company as organized in 1948 to equip and operate the new mining property. A railroad 27 miles in length was built (completed in 1950) to transport the ore to the St. Lawrence River at Havre St. Pierre, An electric furnace treatment plant, yielding a high purity iron and slag containing 70 m 75 percent Ti02, to process the ore was built at Sorel, Quebec, 550 miles up the river from Havre St. Pierre.

Grinding balls, simple in shape, are actually sophisticated machine components, and essential elements of mineral grinding mills. Their physical properties and quality must be adequate to achieve design life and grinding mission with few failures. Consistant properties and freedom from breakage are essential. Size, mass, hardness profile, chemistry, and microstructure are important variables which should be designed, specified, controlled, and verified to achieve optimal mill performance. Failure to specify ball properties in detail or failure to obtain required ball properties and quality can cause milling productivity losses and excessive costs that could endanger a milling operations survival in the competive mineral industry.

Many mines, in particular coal mines, use inclines or slopes as an access to seam or seamlike deposits which outcrop at or close to the surface. In general, from the surface or from a certain depth, inclines or slopes follow the dip of the deposit with length up to 30,000 feet and by that going under an overburden cover of several thousand feet. The common outbye transport system for mine products is the conveyor. Material and men to be transported down into the mine are handled by rope driven systems when the angle of inclination exceeds the employment of locomotive traction. The transport volume can be sizeable and reach 200 to 300 tons of material and 500 men to be handled daily in a medium size coal mine with a production of 10,000 tons ROM.

Since the discovery of uranium in the Ambrosia Lake Area in 1955, a new mining district has developed which promises to be the greatest uranium producing area in the United States. Exploration and development work is proceeding rapidly in mines operated by Kermac Nuclear Fuels Corporation, Phillips Petroleum Company, Rio De Oro Uranium Mines, Inc., Calumet & Hecla, Inc., Rare. Metals Corporation, Homestake-Sapin Partners, Homestake-New Mexico Partners, and Centennial Development Company. Individual mining operations vary in size from 200 tons to more than 1200 tons per day with production from wet and dry ore bodies ranging in depth from 300 to 1500 feet. Many problems have been encountered during the development period in the district mines. Within this paper the author will review some of these problems and mining practices being used. In order to understand better the developments to date, a brief description of the area and its geologic setting will be presented.

In 1973 housing and construction conflicts threatened Front Range gravel resources. The legislature addressed the problem by passing HB 1529, which required the Colorado Geological Survey to map the deposits and forbid local governments to change lands over commercial mineral deposits from zones allowing mineral development to zoning which conflicted with development. It charged counties to develop Master Plans for Extraction. Plans must consider resource quality, multiple-sequential-use potential, surrounding area compatibility, neighbors, quality of Life, extraction maximization and reclamation potential. Imprecisely worded statutes, budgetary constraints, lack of enforcement and political pressures have limited benefits from the law.

Striking similarities exist between the sediment features and facies formed in some modern heliothermal lakes and the characteristics of some ancient borate depositional environments. Heliothermal lakes are density-stratified with shallow submerged margins surrounding areally restricted deep pool(s) containing a dense brine overlain by a much less dense brine. The reflective brine interface allows solar energy to be trapped in the dense brine which may warn to over 900C. carbonate precipitated from the dense brine is the typical sediment produced in warm deep pool. The strong density stratification reduces turbulence in the lake so clastic sediment is deposited under most of the lake as finely-stratified mudstone-limestone couplets (varves). This depositional process results in clastic lake sediment interfingering with and enclosing a thick evaporite pod(s). Because deep pools can exist at the same time or through geologic time, the evaporite pod(s) may occur sporadically throughout the lacustrine beds.

An investigation an4 analysis of slip/fall accidents specifically pertaining to underground coal mines was conducted. From a population of 751 accident reports, three major sources of injury which account for over 80% of the incidents have been identified. The specifics of this study are presented in this paper. Based on the results, several recommendations are made to reduce such accidents in underground mines. In addition, a brief discussion of the slip-hazard analysis laboratory at the University of Utah, which will be useful in future analyses of these accidents is presented. Work in this facility includes the simulation of certain mining activities in a controlled setting. Foot forces are measured and work methods subsequently developed to minimize the slip potential of these activities.

Anticipation of problems and the adoption of corrective measures in the design of engineering structures, establishment of pertinent building codes, and urban planning and zoning to obtain optimum land usage and conservation of natural resources demands a thorough understanding of geological conditions of a developing urban area. In the and to semi-arid southwestern United States erosional and depositional processes result in special situations that require special precautions in building practices. A series of studies currently underway in the Tucson area prompted by foundation failures and breaking, of buried service lines serve to illustrate some of these relationships between the geological environment and history, and engineering problems.

In mid 1970, Park City Ventures, a Utah partnership of ASARCO and TAC, initiated a six phase exploration and development program in the Park City District, Utah. Geologic studies had delineated a number of exploration tar¬gets in several areas of the district. Discovery of ore in any of the target areas and continued favorable down dip development below then productive ore bodies would allow for reserve expansion and mill construction. The targets were: Mississippian Humbug Formation replacement mineralization below productive ore bodies on the east flank of the Park City Anticline; Humbug replacement mineralization in an unexplored fault block in the footwall of the Hawkeye structure on the east flank of the anticline; vein and replacement mineralization along the Silver Fissure; potentially higher grade Humbug replacement mineralization in a theorized structural block on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario Vein; Permian Park City Formation replacement mineralization in the West End Shaft Area of the Silver King mine; vein mineralization along the Back Vein in the Judge Mine. Chilean Nationalization in 1971 resulted in a 30% budget cutback. The Judge and Silver King Projects were suspended. In spite of the cutback additional reserves were developed below the Humbug East Flank ore bodies; a major zone of ore grade mineralization was discovered along the Silver Fissure; five new ore bodies were found in the Humbug, and Doughnut Formations on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario Vein. First concentrates were shipped from a new mill in May 1975.

The Biological Oxidation (BlOX®) Process for the treatment of refractory gold ores was commercialized in 1988. During the last decade, the technology has developed into a mature, commercially viable process, with five additional operations commissioned, including operations at Sao Bento in Brazil, Harbour Lights and Wiluna in Australia, Ashanti in Ghana and Tamboraque in Peru. With ongoing development, the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the process have both improved, making it an attractive alternative to conventional refractory treatment processes such as roasting and pressure oxidation. The bacterial culture is robust and can withstand the normal fluctuations experienced on an operating plant. The plants are simple to operate, making it ideal for remote areas. The scale-up potential of the process has been proven, and it can be applied to large refractory ore bodies. The process is environmentally friendly. Neutralization of plant effluents produces precipitates that comply with the most stringent environmental regulations.
