The environment at the lunar surface is drastically different from the one we are used to on Earth. The Moon has one-sixth of Earth's gravity, virtually no atmosphere, a surface bathed in radiation and micrometeorites, large temperature gradients, low seismicity, and a dusty, rubbly surface. To successfully mine and process materials on the Moon and to mitigate degradation effects in the hostile lunar environment, these factors require new designs for equipment and development of new techniques and technologies.

The financial evaluation of an orebody uses estimates for the grade of ore produced during each year for the life of the mine. Assay data from the Dolphin Scheelite Mine is used to estimate grades by the Polygonal, Ellipsoidal and Disjunctive Kriging Methods. The results are compared with simulated production data, to show the existence of a bias associated with each method. The affect of bias on the financial evaluation of a theoretical model ia assessed.

The White Pine Mine is a large underground copper mine located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A numerical ground water flow model of the White Pine Mine was constructed to evaluate potential engineering controls that would reduce the rate of mine-water discharge after closure. Of the passive controls evaluated, the placement of bulkheads within the mine workings was predicted to offer the greatest benefit, reducing the rate of discharge by as much as 35%.

The Hibbing Taconite Co. concentrator flowsheet, which is noted for its simplicity, uses single- stage autogenous grinding coupled with two stages of magnetic separation and two stages of size classification to produce a magnetite concentrate. This paper discusses the pilot-plant development of single-stage grinding, the commercial mill grinding performance, and mill liner development. Process innovation discussion includes process control computer implementation, size classification improvements, mill speed changes, magnetic separator improvements, and quality control innovations.

During the last ten years Parsons Brinckerhoff has become a leader in the area of tunnel rehabilitation. A significant part of any tunnel rehabilitation program is the control of groundwater infiltration into the structure. This leakage over time, causes deterioration of the structures, and creates numerous operational problems for the tunnel operator. This paper will address current procedures for identification, documentation, and recommendations of repair methods for the control of groundwater infiltration in rail and highway tunnels.

Groundwater remediation is growing in occurrence in the western United States. Groundwater remediation programs are regulated by state water quality statutes. The remedial action plans implemented under these statutes may conflict with well-established existing rights to withdraw groundwater for beneficial use. This paper discusses how the states of Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico administer conflicts between the need to withdraw and remediate groundwater with the existing rights of others to withdraw groundwater for beneficial purposes.

Theories are proposed to explain consistently a class of phenomena and are established with experiences, hypotheses, and laws. Not all concepts need to be presented in a mathematical format. A comminution theory must incorporate fracture physics, particle breakage, stressing events in crushers and mills, material transport, comminution kinetics and models, etc. In this paper the state of knowledge of some of these aspects is discussed. An attempt has been made to show the benefit of theory in comminution practice.

Ore reserve estimation is a multi- disciplinary process involving not only tonnage and grade estimation (resource estimation), but also consideration of technical and legal aspects such as mining the deposit, beneficiating the ores, and selling the product. This paper provides a background to under- standing resource estimation including geologic modelling, manual estimation methods, conventional computer methods. and geostatistical methods. Mine planning, metallurgical studies, legal/environmental, and marketing considerations are also discussed as they relate to estimating ore reserves.

This report concerns Contract No. 3B of the Port Richmond Project, for the Department of Water Resources of the City of New York. It involves the construction of 7, 000 ft. of 7 ft. finish I. D. interceptor sewer by tunneling in soft ground, as well as associated manholes, regulator chambers, siphons and miscellaneous sewers and structures, beneath a heavily travelled perimeter road in Staten Island. The Contractor is Richmond Constructors, a joint venture of Grow Tunneling Corp., sponsor, MacLean Grove & Company, Incorporated, Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc., and Andrew Catapano Co., Inc. Project manager is Paul DeMarco, Vice-President of Grow Tunneling Corp. The cortract, as designed and bid, requires the use of liner plates 101 -0" O. D., and both cast iron and steel designs of several widths were included in the bid documents by the owner. The specifications also required the contractor to install and put into operating condition, prior to commencement of mining, a complete low pressure compressed air plant and all accessories for mining in compressed air, even though the contractor was given the option of using other methods of ground water control. A third requirement of the specifications was that a shield be used, either manual or mechanical, and with full provision for "breasting". Most miners know that Latin America's major mineral areas are in the mountains of Mexico and down the backbone of the Andes in South America. These areas comprise some of the more rugged and challenging parts of the world's geography, and the risks of doing business in these areas are just as difficult as the impressive task of extracting and processing ores. However, Latin America does contain mineral deposits, some untouched and many to be discovered, that convince venturesome people that the tremendous effort required to mine them will be worthwhile. The rewards have often been adequate in the past. Hopefully, they will be in the future. Background The safest statement that can be made about Latin America is that the "ballgame is constantly changing." Here are some examples: Chile. Under President Frei in the 1960s, Chile welcomed foreign mining interests, even though the government was acquiring significant ownership interests in the big copper properties. Then, under Allende in the 1970s, the big mines were taken over and compensation was denied on various grounds including the allegation that extraordinary profits had been made that should have been taxed. After Allende, an about-face was made in policy; former owners of the expropriated mines received some compensation and new foreign investment was seriously welcomed. INTRODUCTION Only in recent years have the environmental hazards associated with mining and tunneling operations been fully acknowledged and determined remedial action undertaken. The nature of these excavation operations leads to a wide diversity of hazards spanning mechanical, electrical, chemical, environmental, and physiological. The most insidious of these are unquestionably the environmental ones which have the greatest long-term effect and are the most difficult to pinpoint and monitor. It is the atmospheric contaminants that lead to a significantly greater illness and mortality rate among miners. Dust is the most prevalent, hence most important of the atmospheric contaminants. Respirable particles lead to diseases characteristic of many mining operations: coal workers pneumoconiosis, asbestiosis, silicosis, talcosis, anthrocosis, etc. But toxic and suffocating gases can be equally insidious and the most innocuous pollutant, methane, leads to the most imminently disastrous results of all - explosion and fire. This means that truly effective monitoring of the environmental hazards in tunneling cannot be limited to a few simple standard check measurements. It must include the most precise measurements we can make for specific, documented hazards and even for factors, such as noise and heat stress, not immediately obvious as hazards. The Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act and more recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards are clearly designed to match such effective monitoring. Unwanted impurities, present in raw materials, are often coextracted along with desired constituents during leaching. Due to its abundance and ease of extraction, the presence of ferric iron in leach solutions, solvent extraction circuits, and subsequently in electrowinning circuits, has always been a problem. In the case of zinc hydrometallurgical processing, iron is frequently an impurity in leach solutions. Purification of such solutions by solvent extraction, using di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in a kerosene diluent, results in ferric ions being readily extracted along with zinc into the organic phase. Ferric iron has proven difficult to strip from the organic phase, but it is known that ferrous iron may be easily stripped from D2EHPA, and hence a process to effect reduction of iron present in the organic would have great potential. This research investigated a process to directly reduce ferric to ferrous iron in the organic phase, and to strip the ferrous iron using a dilute acid solution. The process utilized metallic zinc as the reductant and a low concentration sulfuric acid stripping solution. The results of the laboratory tests illustrated that iron could be readily removed from the organic phase by simultaneous direct reduction and acid stripping. The reductive stripping process was subsequently utilized in industry at the laboratory and pilot plant levels. The results of the industrial tests were encouraging and demonstrated the potential of this novel concept.

The Windy Craggy copper-cobalt-bearing massive sulfide lies in the Tatshenshini map area of northwestern British Columbia, where British Columbia joins Alaska and the Yukon. The area is covered with numerous glaciers and ice fields that mask geologic detail and hamper ground access. In 1957, Ventures Ltd., the predecessor of Falconbridge Ltd., undertook a reconnaissance of the area using a float-equipped Supercub. At that time, large lakes and glaciers were unnamed and little was known of the geology. The prospecting team was led by J.J. McDougall with Stan Bridcut as pilot-prospector. Prospecting was directed at the St. Elias Mountains between the rich Kennecott copper deposits to the northwest and the Maid of Erin silver-copper mine on the Haines Road, BC. Reconnaissance flying in 1957 and early 1958 eliminated vast segments of the Kennecott-Haines Road terrain as being too inaccessible for mining. In 1958, the Supercub landed at an unnamed lake and the terminal moraine of an unnamed 12.9-km (8-mile) long glacier was prospected. The lake was called Tats Lake and the glacier named Tats glacier (short for Tatshenshini). Float of sulfide was found in the moraine. Follow-up investigation along Tats glacier led to the discovery of several small sulfide deposits and these were staked. Prospecting active glaciers in this area can be complicated because of drainage capture by eroding valley glaciers. Glacier capture resulted in the float from one mineralized area being deposited at different times in three widely separated moraines. Float of the Windy Craggy deposit, therefore, occurs along the course of older glaciers and at the base of the currently active ones. The problem of sourcing caused much additional Supercub reconnaissance. It is interesting to note that about 40 geographic names were given various features in this unmapped portion of the St. Elias Range, and these names were ultimately officially adopted.

The demand for rare earth elements for everyday technology and applications has initiated much research into the extraction and recovery of these rare earth elements. An otherwise unknown group of minerals, eudialyte is a zircon silicate consisting of rare earth oxides (REO), contained in a unique mineral structure and represented by a complex chemical formula. Research into extraction and recovery of rare earth elements involves various beneficiation and hydrometallurgical techniques. The goal of beneficiation being to efficiently liberate and upgrade the REO content, followed by hydrometallurgy to extract the desired elements. This overview will discuss previous research on treating eudialyte group minerals via different mineral processing and extraction techniques.

A chartered bus with about 30 attendees of the just completed 1998 SME Annual Meeting headed toward Green Cove Springs, FL, which the author had been told was located somewhere south of Jacksonville, FL. In conjunction with the meeting in Orlando, RGC (USA) Mineral Sands provided a tour of its facility. The author had worked with heavy minerals on a laboratory scale, performing the usual gravity and magnetic separations, but had never been to a heavy mineral mine and processing facility. Years ago as a metallurgist, the author once applied for a job in a heavy mineral operation in Florida -it may have been the same operation. After turning north on to Highway 95, the endless billboards promoting beach-front retirement communities proved the Atlantic ocean was just a few miles away (although the author never caught a glimpse of it). After another hour, the bus suddenly turned west and continued inland for about 65 km (40 miles). The thought occurred, "We are talking about beach sands, what are we doing heading away from the ocean?" As the bus continued inland, the author was struck by the flatness of the land and by the lakes, rivers and wetlands. He was also impressed by the many fine stands of pine and hardwoods. The office of RGC (USA) Mineral Sands is located about 16 km (10 miles) south of Green Cove Springs. Upon leaving the bus, members of the tour were greeted by Graeme Sloan, general manager, and Elliot Mallard, manager of mining. They provided some general information about the operation, including a slide show. RGC's Florida operation produces four concentrates: zircon (ZrSiO,), rutile (TiO,), ilmenite (FeTiO,) and leucoxene (an alteration product of ilmenite containing 67% to 70% TiO,). With a work force of about 170, the annual production of the above products is about 23,27, 45 and 14 kt (25,000 30,000 50,000 and 15,000 st), respectively. RGC also has other mineral sand operations, in addition to gold and base metal mines, mostly in Australia.

INTRODUCTION The widespread use of desktop computers by an ever increasing number of people, both for personal and for business and government uses, has brought public attention to surprising stories about computer abuse. Before the advent of microcomputers in the information processing environment, hundreds of amazing misdeeds involving large computers had already been reported, most of them perpetrated by highly skilled professionals. The undreamed enlarging of microcomputer potential has steadily posed a major threat to complex mainframe computing systems, as joyful teenagers become familiar with the habit of hacking around someone else's large processing system, by means of makeshift phone communication networks, based on their intended homework for personal computers -- for the sheer fun of it. Now, the never ending capacity and speed improvement of commercially available micros has given rise to a brand new concern for society: the hazards of processing sensitive information in the powerful, but still unsafe microcomputer itself, whether or not linked to other micros or mainframe networks. This paper deals with some aspects of the problems and presents some practical hints as to enhance protection and minimize risks to sensitive and secretive information when processed on microcomputers. The physical considerations of computer security and pertinent safety precautions will not be discussed, because while essentially relevant to information protection, recommendations are well defined by processing resources suppliers and their importance is more widely recognized by users in general. Definitions and Classifications. The following definitions and classifications will be considered in this report: Information Assets: Any knowledge or information processing, storing or conveying device displayed in one's environment. It consists of two main categories: INFORMATION RESOURCES: End user's application data wherever recorded. PROCESSING RESOURCES: EDP skilled user's hardware, software, peripherals, magnetic media, communication devices, auxiliary equipment, supplies and related operational procedures. Information Protection: In a broad sense this is the set of necessary procedures to assure to the legitimate user the effective control of the operation and allow modifications of information assets, so that their physical or cognitive integrity be preserved or any unexpected loss minimized inspite of accidental occurrences or intentional actions. Classification Processes: Commonly two classification processes are used to define key terms in information protection: SENSITIVE CLASSIFICATION: Pre-defined standards for assessing the vulnerability to losses due to lack of proper processing continuity if information is destroyed, disclosed, secluded, or misused. SECRECY CLASSIFICATION: A spectrum of degrees as to the expectancy of holding exclusiveness of unique information whose destruction, disclosure, seclusion or misuse will cause a negative impact on the legitimate holder environment. Sensitive Information: Any knowledge whose destruction. disclosure. seclusion or misuse - - - implies losses to its legitimate holder. The thiosulfate, effects copper of concentrations of and ammonia ou the extractlon of gold from sulfide gold concentrate have been studied. The experimental results showed that it is possible to reduce thiosulfate concentration. Above 95% of gold extraction was obtained in O. 2M thiosulfate leaching solution in two hours under the suitable conditions. Therefore, the process of washing residue was simplified, the consumption of thiosulfate and the loss of thiosulfate carried were reduced. by washing residued.

Identifying the optimum ultimate height for heap leaching ore requires the consideration of a number of competing factors. A primary limitation is the reduction in the permeability of the ore with increasing heap heights. At low permeabilities the heap can blind off, cause serious ponding and runoff, and become very difficult to rinse at closure. The authors present a laboratory methodology that has been successfully used on several projects to identify the maximum height for controlling heap permeability.
