A programme to reduce cyanide consumption at the New Celebration Gold Mine, situated 32kms South of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, commenced in the latter part of 1990. Cyanide speciation studies at the time identified that the major loss and consequently consumption was due to the hydrolysis of cyanide, The use of artesian hypersaline waters of high magne­sium content on gold plants in Western Australian Goldfields has meant that economically viable operating pH values during cyanide leaching are around 8.9 to 9.5. The high ionic strength in these waters does to some degree retard the hydrolysis reac­tion. Notwithstanding this, the formation of hydrogen cyanide and its loss due to volatilisation is the cause of the major loss of cyanide on most gold plants in the Kalgoorlie Goldfields. This paper discusses the aspect of oxygen addition during cyanide leaching to decrease cyanide consumption and increase gold recovery.

Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrom­etry (LA-ICP-MS) has been used successfully to "fingerprint" gold in forensic investigations within Australia and abroad. By comparison of the elemental associations it has been possible to relate gold to specific mineralising events, mines, bullion samples and fabricated articles. The methodology facilitates identification of the provenance of gold thereby providing definitive scientific evidence in criminal investigations. "Gold" samples for analysis span a wide range of materials with many requiring exhaustive prior separation and treatment to present the contained gold in a chemically "unmodified" state, and in a form, suitable for LA-ICP-MS fingerprinting. The quality of the fingerprint, and hence its value in evidence, is directly related to the rigours of prior sample preparation and evaluation, to an appreciation of the history of the gold under investigation, and to the skill of the analyst.

Steric stabilization is a phenomenon observed when relatively high doses of flocculants are added to fine particle suspensions. Experiments were conducted to establish conditions under which medium viscosity and the sedimentation properties of black sand components in a slurry could be controlled so as to enhance the selective sedimentation of gold grains. It was shown that black sand concentrates containing as low as 2.65 g/mt gold could be upgraded by selectively hindering the sedimentation of non-gold components in an aqueous slurry. This paper presents data describing the theory and practical implementation of this cyanide or mercury-free novel approach where gold could be concentrated by as much as 15 times with relatively high recoveries. The relationships of solids content of slurries, type and dose of polymers with the recovery process are documented. Key words: Gold, black sand, selective flocculation, steric stabilization.

This paper focus on the productivity, cost efficiency and training programmes that have enable RPM to rank as a world class operation in production efficiency and safety achievements. The first step was to commit all senior managers to implementing the NOSA Industrial Safety System based on Management by Objectives. This focused the workforce in a specific, results-driven direction which greatly promoted subsequent performance improvements. The early operations concentrated on increasing throughput via process simplification and removal of bottlenecks. Efforts were simultaneously directed to environment, health and safety as a means to improving the quality of operations. In the last two years, improvements in mining and in-tailings dam management have further improved the cost competitiveness of RPM such as to assure its future in treating the remaining CTBl ore reserves. Promissing progress is being made in developing a viable process to exploit a remaining large resource of B2 mineralisation.

In the present study, the possibilities of use of natural zeolitic tuffs from the Skaloma area, Rhodope prefecture, Greece, for the removal of Pb and Zn ions from aqueous solutions has been studied. The equilibrium data were examined for different grain sizes, pH?s and initial concentrations. An apparent kinetic study was also carried out for different time intervals at constant temperature and pulp density. For the chemical equilibrium study the Freundlich isotherm was used. The experimental results verified the favored behavior of zeolite on lead ions and the quick kinetic of the process whilst the efficiency of the ion exchange on zinc is rather limited. The grain size of the material did not greatly affect the performance of the process. The removal of metal ions worked better at lower pH. The Freundlich isotherms are in good agreement with the experimental data.

For the African continent promoting a sustainable utilization of its mineral resources could be considered as a key determinant to fight against poverty. Sustainable development performance indicators for measuring the economic, environmental and social impacts of mining activity are necessary for drawing up policies and sectoral actions, identifying and controlling risks, identifying and implementing sustainable development actions, negotiating between stake-holders, improving mine production, etc. To respond to this need, the SIGAfrique Network proposed to develop a joint decision support tool entitled the African Mining Observatory (AMO) and, to this end, develops a system of indicators to be integrated within the SIGAfrique database. The development of both the OMA and the indicators is based on a participatory method within the working groups, which comprise experts/participants from the 13 SIGAfrique partner and observer countries (Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, Tanzania, Niger, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Angola, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and Mauritania).

The 34th Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals gave members a chance to see the geology of various stone and ore deposits displayed graphically in quarry walls and also provided an opportunity to hear and see first-rate papers and posters on the geology of industrial minerals. Also, some field trips passed through areas of spectacular scenery. As a bonus, participants saw scenic mines, some of which are "pretty as a picture." Watercolor paintings prove it. At the Oklahoma Forum, the writer displayed a number of paintings of mines and other landscapes seen during previous Forum trips. These paintings and this brief article are part of a crusade to prove that some mines and geologic vistas are scenic wonders and belong in our visual heritage. It is a plea to save some of our best geologic exposures for future geologists, tourists, and artists.

The open stope room and pillar method of mining is used throughout Ozark Lead Company's underground mine located at Sweetwater, Missouri. This method of mining produces an approximate overall ore extraction of 80%. Pillar recovery, on a limited and experimental basis, was started in January of 1979 to determine the maximum size underground opening that could be mined safely. Monitoring the roof and surrounding pillars for potential failure during this pillar recovery process was accomplished by utilizing a simple rod extensometer to measure roof sag. Boreholes 7.5cm in diameter were drilled 3.5m into the roof to spot any separations or cracks that might have propagated between the bedded layers of rock. Underground openings 85m in length by 46m in width have been mined successfully without roof or surrounding pillar failure. Continued measurements to establish long term results will be necessary.

Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage -"the bottom line evaluator." The valuable Maximum Utilization Factor (MUF) concept has been extended to other rotating excavators beyond Stripping Shovels and Draglines. In this concept the boom reach and bucket capacity are multiplied to get an MUF, then normalized by dividing by the equipment weight. Statistical analyses were applied to the remaining shovels (hydraulic and cable), draglines, and backhoes. Positive correlations were found. Stripping Shovels and Draglines were also re-examined. The results provide an estimate of equipment diggability and encourages versatility by the interchange of the boom and the bucket. The concept further clarifies the existing equipment classification by delineating General Excavating, Loading, and Stripping kinds. The results also forecast trends, and noted innovative advances and possible retrogression. Extension to other boom excavators, such as front-end loaders, is recommended. The MUF concept provides one of the few indices of gross external characteristics available to the engineer-user of equipment.

Disposal of mine tailings has been recognized as an unavoidable burden of mining companies and local authorities. Conventional methods dispose mine tailings in a passive manner which hardly generates any value from them. On the other hand, growing local communities close to mines need more infrastructures which require great amounts of raw materials. In view of the above mentioned situation, a novel utilization of mine tailings is explored as alternative material for asphalt pavement, in order to extract more value from mine tailings and solve the high cost of pavement material. Inherent physical properties of the mine tailings were first investigated to find out their availability as pavement material. Then test specimens were made as mixture of the mine tailings and other pavement material to be tested in laboratory. This paper describes the development and testing of the RAMEX excavation system. Incorporating a synergy of low velocity, high energy impact and kerf cutting, this machine offers a competitive alternative to drilling and blasting in hard rock. It is a boom mining machine that incorporates the features of a lightweight roadheader and it can mine nearly any shape opening in hard rock. The RAMEX Tunneler has been developed to satisfy industry demands for a non-explosive, flexible, continuous and rapid underground rock excavation system. It will produce minimum ground vibration in the urban environment and allow the flexibility necessary for thin seam mining conditions. It will also reduce initial ground support costs and has a minimum impact on rock integrity. Developed by RAMEX Systems with cooperative research provided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, this system, could produce the next step in the continuing evolution of mechanical mining systems.

Waterjet assist of mechanical cutters has been demonstrated in a variety of laboratory studies as well as on field equipment. As this technique becomes more widely accepted, it will be necessary to develop methods of minimizing the horsepower and water requirements. In machines such as roadheaders, continuous miners, and longwall shearers, the use of waterjet assist can be optimized through the development of phasing valves. Phasing valves will allow only the cutters in contact with the rock to be assisted. Since only 30 - 40% of the cutters are in contact with the rock, the saving power is significant. Flow Industries has developed a phasing system for use on roadheading machines. This system allows the operator extensive control of the angle of assist as well as the quadrant being assisted. This system could be greatly simplified for production machines and adapted for use in continuous miners and longwall machines.

Reagents of biological origin are becoming more and more important in the field of metallurgy, especially in the areas of mineral processing and hydrometallurgy. The advantage of lower operating cost over physical and chemical processes and the capacity to operate with low grade ores make the microbial processes further attractive. In this paper, the role of microbes directly as a reagent and microbially produced reagents or secreted metabolites in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy will be discussed. Adhesion of microbes to surfaces is known to alter the hydrophobicity of minerals. Applications include surface modification to impart hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity on sulfide or non-sulfide minerals and dissolution of precious metals. Microbes can also perform the role of flocculating agents. Biosorption of toxic and heavy metal ions by microbes are finding application in treating tailing ponds. Mechanisms associated with the use for microbially produced reagents are discussed along with some recent results.

The leaching behavior of palladium in ammoniacal solutions was investigated by using the rotating-disk technique in an autoclave. The study included the effects of rotation speed, temperature, oxygen pressure, composition of ammoniacal solutions and catalysts on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of palladium in ammoniacal solutions was discussed in terms of the thermodynamics and a kinetic model. Even though the Eh-pH diagram suggests that palladium metal can dissolve in ammoniacal solutions at room temperature, it was found that the dissolution was very slow at temperatures below 100 °C but was significantly improved at higher temperatures. It was also found that the rotating speed of the palladium disk had no effect on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy was found to he 69.7 kJ/mole. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the dissolution of palladium is controlled by chemical reaction.

Introduction As ore grades decline and deposit depths increase, problems and costs of mining construction increase rapidly. Ground water greatly impacts the cost of mining construction. In developing or exploiting ore bodies or coal mines, stored ground water in waterbearing formations is often encountered. Man-made conduits or shafts are constructed, as are raise bores for ventilation (up to 6-m-diam or 20-ft-diam), or smaller diameter drill holes, used for either power cables or rock dust. In underground construction and mining, it is possible to inherit unmapped and abandoned drill holes either from oil or gas exploration, or from previous geological investigations. There also exists within underground work exposure to faults, fissures, and jointing. A mine development may encounter unknown aquifers or, unluckily, have an ore body that is an aquifer. Water may invade an existing underground structure, due to concrete deterioration or to damage that may occur to an existing shaft or tunnel concrete lining. An underground development may intersect a drill hole that was not properly grouted when abandoned. It subsequently formed a conduit or an active path to conduct water into the mine. Water inflow may range from insignificant to a magnitude sufficient to inundate an area or an entire underground development. Corrosion imposes major costs. In shafts, it can cause accelerated wear and deterioration, and subsequent early replacement of hoisting ropes. It can also cause deterioration, misalignment, and subsequent accelerated wear and replacement of timber and steel guides and buntons. Utility maintenance (power cables, air, water, and ventilation lines) also can become a problem. Corrosion imposes major costs. Skips and skiploaders provide a never-ending series of maintenance headaches when exposed to an ingress of water. Numerous problems are found in declines with invert and rail maintenance and with partitions in over-under coal mine slopes. Ground water interacting with an underground ventilation system can result in: • Increased ventilation resistance due to roof falls and the spalling of ribs caused by ice heaving. • Restriction in shaft or slope cross-sectional area due to ice buildup during winter months. This may be a safety hazard to access as well. • An increase in the moisture content entering the ventilation air that condenses underground and causes electrical and equipment maintenance problems. Underground structures also incur water-caused problems. The concrete lining in shafts, slopes, and tunnels may be subject to: • Active mine waters causing concrete and reinforcing steel to deteriorate - perhaps to the point of collapse. • Load redistribution around a concrete lining, caused by soil dislocation due to water movement. The resulting stress may be in excess of the calculated design loading. Backwall injection with grout of the completed concrete lining may solve these water inflow problems through low-pressure injections of cement and chemicals. This fills voids at the interface of the concrete lining with either the soil or rock excavation. Surface structures may be jeopardized by lowering the ground water table, resulting in surface settlements. Surface settlements can occur in buildings, headframes, hoist foundations, mills, conveyor structures, or in rail haulage. Areas of differential settlement can lead to derailments, improper wear of hoisting ropes on sheaves in headframes, and the misalignment of bearings and brakes. Mud jacking and compaction grouting may remedy these problems. To reduce operating costs, increase efficiency, and increase safety, inflow water to the mine should be minimized. For an operating mine with a water problem, a water inflow survey should be taken. Quantities of water flow should be examined at all accesses (shafts, slopes, bore holes, and raise bores) at the faces, haulages (rails or conveyors), and sump discharge. Until about three years ago, Asarco's copper business consisted predomi¬nantly of custom smelting of ores and concentrates produced by other mining companies. Since then, the company has been transforming itself into a fully integrated producer in copper mining, smelting, and refining. In doing this, Asarco has lowered its costs and restructured its operations and finances. Now, Asarco hopes to complete this process by spending $260 million over the next three years, to expand and modernize its copper facilities and boost production by some 40%. The capital spending program includes: • $130 million at the Ray mine about 113 km (70 miles) north of Tucson, AZ, to expand mining capacity and install an in-pit ore crusher, mill, and concentrator; • $100 million, to expand the mining capacity at the Mission Complex located south of Tucson, AZ, and refurbish the adjacent, idle Pima mill and concentrator. (Asarco had earlier exercised an option to purchase the Pima mill for about $6 million); and • $30 million, to modernize the copper smelter in El Paso, TX, with a new flash smelting process. The new program is in addition to a recently completed first-phase expansion of the Mission mine, mill, and concentrator. This $13 million debottlenecking of existing operations in¬creased production capacity by 46% or 24.5 kt/a (27,000 stpy), to 79 kt/a (87,000 stpy) of copper in concentrates. In addition, a previously an¬nounced $12 million expansion program at the Ray mine is scheduled for completion in early 1990. It will expand mill capacity, to offset the anticipated effects of increasing ore hardness as the pit deepens. Ray produces 68 kt/a (75,000 stpy) of copper in concen¬trates and an additional 36 kt/a (40,000 stpy) of electrowon copper. By 1992, when Asarco's expanded and modernized copper facilities are operating at capacity, the company's mine output will have increased by 67 kt/a (74,000 stpy), to 263 kt/a (290,000 stpy) of contained copper. That will be enough to provide all of the feed required for Asarco's two copper smelters - by then, both of them modern, state-of-the-art facilities. Asarco's expansion and modernization program will further reduce costs and provide added assurance that the company's copper business will be profitable at the bottom of the cycle, according to Chairman Richard de J. Osborne The Ray mine portion of the new program will include construction at the mine of a new mill and concentrator, with a capacity of 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) of ore. These new semiautogenous grinding mills and large capacity flotation cells will augment the present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) concentrator located 29 km (18 miles) away, in Hayden, AZ. A 29 km (18 mile) pipeline will be built to carry tailings in slurry form from the new Ray mill to the present tailings pond. Concentrates from the new facility will be shipped by rail to Asarco's Hayden copper smelter. Ray's present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) crusher, adjacent to the open-pit, will be replaced by a 54.4 kt/d (60,000 stpd), portable in-pit crusher and conveying system. This will reduce the more expensive ore haulage by truck. The Ray project is scheduled for completion by 1992. It will increase the mine's annual output of copper in concentrates by an additional 33.5 kt/a (37,000 st), to 102 kt (112,000 st). And the project could mean an additional 400 jobs at the 730 employee Ray operation. Work at the Mission Complex involves reactivation of the Pima mill and concentrator and expansion of mine output sufficient to provide ore to both the Pima mill and the present Mission mill. In 1985, Asarco purchased the Pima mine, which occupies one end of the Mission pit. The importance of adequate mine ventilation for good health and safety conditions has been recognized since miners first ventured underground. All over the world, governmental actions on mine health and safety are directly connected with mine atmospheric environments, their assessment and control. These governmental actions have been, and continue to be, motivated by the repeated experience that potential threats from inadequate control can evolve, either suddenly or in the long-term, into unpleasant reality, with catastrophic health and safety consequences. These governmental actions are also an indication of the remarkable professional progress being made in the field of mine ventilation. Surely, no developed country allows underground mines to operate without strong measures for the control of ventilation under legislation specific to the mining industry. In the United States, the federal government's responsibility for mine safety has evolved over the years through a series of legislative actions beginning in 1865 and continuing through 1910, 1941, 1947 and 1952. The passage of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966 (the 1966 Metal Act), the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (the 1969 Coal Act) and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (the 1977 Mine Act) are the most important milestones in this long legislative history. The 1977 Mine Act adopted many of the stronger features of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970, perhaps the most significant piece of legislation on workers' occupational health and safety in US history. It is worthwhile to ask, "How far has the United States come in mine ventilation since the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act?" This Act and its associated regulations defined in great specificity many standards for healthful and safe operation of a mine and, in some cases, what constitutes good ventilation practice. Since 1969, the frequency and severity of disaster-type events in US coal mines has decreased markedly. A primary reason for this achievement is the strength of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act's regulatory features in such areas as methane concentration control, dust control, intrinsic safety and explosion-proof enclosures, minimum air quantity and quality standards and air distribution and escapeway provisions. These requirements greatly influenced mine ventilation planning, engineering and practice, leading to increasingly safe working conditions.

The development of heap leach technology for the treatment of low grade gold and silver ores has led to a boom in gold production in the Western United States in the last 15 years. The heap leaching process consists of stacking the mined ore on a specially prepared leach pad followed by leaching with dilute alkaline cyanide solution. Depending on the nature of the ore, it may require crushing and/or agglomeration prior to stacking on the leach pad. As the dilute alkaline cyanide solution migrates down through the stacked ore, the precious metal values along with a portion of the base metal values present in the ore are dissolved to give a pregnant leach solution which is collected at the base of the stacked ore. The precious metal values are then recovered by zinc precipitation or by adsorption on activated carbon. Once all of the economic metal values have been leached from the ore, the spent heap leach pad, the leached materials, and associated process solutions must be decomissioned. Decommissioning requires that the spent heap leach pad along with the leached materials and process solution be treated to reduce the concentration of the residual cyanide, base metal cyanide complexes, and other anionic metal species to levels where they no longer represent a long tenn liability for the environment and the operator. The levels to which these components must be reduced is dependent upon the applicable water quality standards as determined by the responsible federal, state, and local agencies. As environmental awareness has grown, these standards have become increasingly stringent. A number of treatment options have been developed for the de-toxification of the process residues. These include natural degradation which incorporates bio-degradation, fresh water rinsing, alkaline chlorination, hydrogen peroxide, and sulfur dioxide/air. Each of these options has been reviewed with regard to relative effectiveness, generation of hazardous by­products, reagent handling considerations, relative costs, and time requirements by Denton, Iverson, and Gosling I. As an outgrowth of the program to develop Henkel's guanidine based gold extractants, COGNIS, Inc., the environmental ann of Henkel, has developed the CyanoMet R process for the extraction and concentration of the various cyanide and anionic metal species from the dilute aqueous alkaline solutions generated during the process of detoxifying spent heap leach pads. This paper describes the CyanoMet R process, its application to three different feed solutions, and treatment of the concentrate generated by the process.

The Apex property, mined in the early Twentieth Century for direct shipping copper, also contains gallium and germanium in iron oxide minerals. In 1982, Musto Explorations Limited began an exploration program to define reserves. A metallurgical process was developed, and a production decision was reached in late 1983. This text describes the process development and design. The Apex mine, located near St. George in Southwestern Utah is owned by St. George Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Musto Explorations of Vancouver, B.C. Musto acquired the property in early 1982. A pilot plant was operated by Hazen Research, Inc., Golden, CO later in 1982. In late 1983 sufficient information had been developed for St. George to proceed with the project. The final process design was prepared by G. M. Swinkels of Vancouver, consultant to Musto, and Hazen Research. Process engineering was done by Hazen Research, and St. George acted as its own contractor. Commissioning of the plant began in October 1985.
