Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway's company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner's Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km'/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company's initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner's Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear's Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner's Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner's Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner's Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner's Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company's common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner's Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. System simulation is an increasingly popular technique for analyzing and improving existing as well as newly designed underground mining operations. An engineering firm that specializes in simulation helped a major metals producer build a long-range planning model of an existing underground mine. Subsequently the team adapted this model to assess technology alternatives in the design of a new mine. The two models differ in the level of detail used for modeling the development process. This paper discusses the differences in approach between the models along with the experiences gained and challenges faced during the construction and use of the models.

DSI DYWI Rock Dust application is aiding in enhancing safety and productivity in underground coal mining. DSI DYWI Rock Dust combines wet dusting technology and polymers to allow for drying and lift characteristics for rock dusting. DSI DYWI Rock Dust typically dries within 24 to 48 hours depending upon the mine air velocity and humidity. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator Machine is a completely hydraulic unit. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator machine allows for batching of product and face spraying operations in permissible locations. The DSI DYWI Rock Dusting Applicator Machine fits in one half of a battery or diesel scoop bucket for ease of transport. It is completely hydraulically powered by the PTO circuit. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator unit requires a scoop operator, and a person to operate the spray wand, simple operation with two personnel. The first demonstration was at an underground continuous miner room and pillar coal mine which produced a pilot test period opportunity, which proved to be successful, and has now been in full launch mode with the US underground coal mining industry. A typical batch of operation allows for 250? of roof and rib (19? wide by 6? in height) coverage of DSI DYWI Rock Dust application. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator contains a hydraulic powered air compressor which allows for 30-50% more coverage per batch by improved dispersion of product via air assist spray nozzle. DSI DYWI Rock Dust will add approximately $0.02 to $0.04 per clean ton of coal cost to the mining operation over traditional rock dust cost depending upon mining height.

To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m (984 ft), while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m (3,280 to 6,560 ft). The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics and the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics publish data for a range of industries, allowing a measure of performance to be quantified, called multifactor productivity (MFP), and allowing performance between industries to be compared on a consistent basis. At the time of writing, the last released data was for 2011-2012. For Australia, the plot of mining industry productivity and a basket of the 12 most significant industries in Australia?s economy (including mining) are shown in Fig. 1. For the United States, mining and petroleum and all manufacturing productivity are also displayed in Fig. 1. The trends are as follows: ? The MFP in the Australian mining sector rose 36 percent from 1986-1987 to 2000-2001. There was a 47-percent decline in MFP from 2000-2001 to 2011-2012 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2011). ? The MFP in the United States mining sector rose 17 percent from 1986-1987 to 2004-2005. There was a 7-percent decline in MFP 2004-2005 to 2010-2011, (Topp et al., 2008).

To understand why some companies excel in creating value, Jim Collins (2001) and a group of postgraduate business students engaged in a comprehensive, five-year research project. They examined 1,435 U.S. companies for more than 40 years, seeking those that made significant improvements in their financial performance over time. The distinctive pattern sought was: ?Fifteen-year cumulative stock returns at or below the general stock market, punctuated by a transition point, then cumulative returns at least three times the market over the next 15 years. ?The search identified 11 outperforming companies, all in different industries, that were called the ?good to great? companies. To contrast these companies with similar peers within the same industry, the search also selected a group of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. Collins then set out to examine the transition point. What distinguishing features did the good-to-great companies have that their industry counterparts did not? At the heart of the findings about these outstanding companies is what Collins refers to as the ?hedgehog concept? ? how to find the one big thing that the company must focus on. According to Collins, those who built the good-to-great companies were, to one degree or another, hedgehogs. Those who led the comparison companies tended to be foxes, never gaining the clarifying advantage of a hedgehog concept, being instead scattered, diffused and inconsistent. This insight is complemented by Peter Drucker (2004), an influential management guru, who asserts that the first question an effective executive should ask is: ?what needs to be done?? Asking this question and taking it seriously, he asserts, is crucial for managerial success; and that the answer almost always has more than one urgent task, but the effective leader only concentrates on one task. In this last respect, Drucker emphasizes: ?If they [executives] are among the sizeable minority who work best with a change of pace in the working day, they pick two tasks. I have never encountered an executive who is effective while tackling more than two tasks at a time.?

Most statistical and geostatistical methods of re-source and reserve estimation work extremely well for Normal (Gaussian) well-behaved information. However, most interesting mineral deposits exhibit far from this idealistic distribution of values. It seems that the more valuable the mineral, the less likely the data are to have a Normal distribution. Values tend to be "positively skewed" with a long tail into the high values. Using averaging techniques, such as inverse distance or ordinary kriging may result in consider-able overestimation of grades and tonnages unless such values are cut or otherwise modified. This paper presents some real case studies where distributions are (a) highly skewed and (b) the product of multiple phases of mineralisation. Practical methods are presented for solving such problems including combinations of indicator and log normal kriging methods. The emphasis of the presentation is on developing operational methods which can be used on project evaluation or grade control in producing mines.

LaModel is a boundary-element program capable of calculating the displacements and stresses in thin bedded deposits such as coal, salt, or potash. Throughout its history, it has continually been upgraded in order to expand analysis detail and stay current with the latest advances in computer technology. The most recent enhancements include: an increased grid size capability, a significant increase in the speed of the automatic grid generation using an AutoCAD visual interface, implementation of subsidence-based horizontal strain calculations for multiple-seam situations, and pillar safety factor calculations. To demonstrate these new features, a multiple-seam case study of a longwall panel undermining an active set of main entries is presented.

NPV is a static measure of project value which does not discriminate between levels of internal and external risk in project valuation. Due to current investment project?s characteristics, a much more complex model is needed: one that includes the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with variables subject to uncertainty (price, costs, exchange rates, grade and tonnage of the deposits, cut off grade, among many others). Few of these variables present any correlation or can be treated uniformly. In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) arose more than a decade ago, as a mainly theoretical model with the potential for simultaneous calculation of the risk associated with such variables. This paper reviews the literature regarding the application of Real Options Valuation in mining, noting the prior focus on external risks, and presents a case study where ROV is applied to quantify risk associated to mine planning.

The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially in this area: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia; historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to/the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills; on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon; and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape face or is of major importance in this area; and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type.

Introduction Rockfalls occur when rocks or boulders detach from mountains or hills and tumble down. They can pose significant hazards to infrastructure such as highways, buildings, and mine open pits, and they sometimes result in personal injury or death. Prediction of rockfalls is a difficult task. Slopes that are at risk of rockfall have highly variable geometries. The location, mass, and shape of the rocks that might dislodge and fall are uncertain. Moreover, the materials that make up a slope can vary considerably from one section to another. Furthermore, the relevant material properties are usually not well known. Performing probabilistic simulations of rockfalls, combined with proper statistical analyses, has proven to be an effective and acceptable method for dealing with these difficulties [1, 2, 3]. The movements of a falling rock can be classified as freefall, bouncing, sliding, toppling, or rolling. The falling trajectory is controlled mainly by the geometry of the slope, the block shape, and the energy dissipated at each contact of the block with the slope. A rockfall model is evaluated based on its ability to efficiently predict the velocity, frequency, height of bounce, and run-out distance of falling rocks. With this information, the engineer can design remedial measures such as restraining nets and ditches. Most of the existing rockfall simulators are based on particle models that consider the falling rock as an infinitesimal particle with a mass, called the lumped mass or stereomechanical models [1, 2, 3, 4]. Other models involve hybrid methods relying on simplified assumptions. The most common hybrid methods are based on contact searching for the movement of a dimensionless object and incorporate some aspects of rigid body impact for bouncing [5, 6, 7]. There are also some rigid body models in the literature that employ simplified versions of rigid body models [8, 9]. This study applies a more sophisticated rigid body theory based on rigid body impact mechanics (RBIM), which was developed by Stronge [10, 11, 12]. The new theory captures all modes of rigid body movement. Due to the importance of the rock geometry, single impacts of ellipsoidal and prismatic rocks with rectangular cross sections are investigated. The effect of rock slenderness on rebound velocities and energies is also investigated for ellipsoidal rocks. The correspondence between the model parameters and the data from the rockfall literature data will be discussed.

ISO 9000 is a system of quality standards that originated in Europe in the 1980s and has since been widely adopted by manufacturing companies throughout the world. The ISO 9000 standards have received less attention in the minerals industry. But, in part as a result of customer pressure, a trend is beginning to emerge for minerals producers to seek ISO certification. This is especially true among producers of industrial minerals. In early October 1994, SME's Industrial Minerals Division held a conference "ISO 9000 - uniting industrial mineral producers and consumers into quality partnerships," in Nashville, TN to bring people from the industry together to talk about their experiences with ISO 9000. William J. Miles, of Bentonite Corp. Inc., and A. Frank Alsobrook, of Alsobrook and Co., were cochairmen of the meeting. In his introductory remarks, Miles noted, "ISO 9000 is more than a quality program. It is a quality philosophy. Appropriately imple-mented, it is a contract between the supplier and the customer. It leads to continuous quality improvement and reduced manufacturing costs."

Resolution Copper Mining LLC (RCML) is currently in a Pre-feasibility study evaluating a large and deep copper and molybdenum deposit in the historic mining district east of Superior, Arizona. Work scheduled for the next several years includes dewatering the existing shut-down mine (the Magma Mine) and sinking an exploratory shaft to 2,130 meters (7,000 feet) below the surface. To dewater the Magma Mine and sink the exploratory shaft, RCML must extract and manage about 2 billion gallons of accumulated mine water inventory, as well as about 300 million gallons per year of new inflow. In order to conserve a valuable water resource in a desert environment, RCML worked with the New Magma Irrigation and Drainage District (NMIDD) to provide treated mine water to blend with and supplement the NMIDD?s water supply to approximately 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of farmland located east of Phoenix. A 44 km (27-mile) pipeline was needed to convey the treated water. It was essential that a treatment system be used which could reliably meet irrigation water quality goals, produce a non-scaling effluent to maintain pipeline flow capacity, and generate a dense sludge minimizing disposal cost and volume. This paper describes the resulting mine water treatment and recovery system (MWTS) and how the system has performed against objectives.

"It is safe to say that the coal industry, in the United States and globally, is currently suffering through one of the hardest times in its history.A perfect storm of competition, changing energy demands, politics and public perceptions have collided, inflicting significant harm to the industry that many say is irreparable. This, in turn, has led to massive job losses in some regions, heavy cuts in production and even bankruptcy filings from two of the largest coal mining companies in the nation.Cheaper natural gas can certainly take a large share of the blame for the struggle of coal, as utility companies switch from coal to natural gas for power generation. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) the amount of coal used for electricity generation in the United States is at a 45-year low.November 2015 marked the fifth consecutive month that natural gas was the leading source of power generation in the United States. EIA said generators produced 101,866 thousand megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity with gas in November versus just 87,789 thousand MWh with coal, the lowest monthly level since May 1980 when monthly coal use was 84,884 thousand MWh.According to Robert Godby, director of the Center for Energy Economics and Public Policy at the University of Wyoming, there are a number of factors playing a role in the decline of coal, but he points to the advances in fracking as the tipping point.“A lot of people will argue that regulation is the cause of the decline, and it has played a part, for sure, but the story of the recent past is more about what competition has done to the energy market,” Godby told Mining Engineering. “The war on coal was originally declared by natural gas in 2008.”The price of natural gas, which was at $13 per million Btu before the gas fracking boom, has fallen to as low as $1.68 in December 2015. Likewise, Godby said the cost of wind generation is now lower than the cost of generation from coal and the cost of solar generation is coming down as well. In addition to that, the demand for energy has changed in the past five years with more efficiencies in everything from building design to lightbulbs."

In the wake of the collapse of the ceiling panels in the I-90 section of the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project in 2006, the long term performance of tunnels became the focus of the tunneling industry. At the time of the accident, the tunnel had been open to traffic for about 10 years. This paper will discuss design methods and considerations to improve the long term performance and durability of a tunnel. The major problems found during the inspection of several tunnels will also be presented and the causes for these problems will be discussed.

Corrosion of equipment and machinery in the coal industry is usually the result of three main agents: acids, chlorides, and abrasion. Acids and chlorides are especially troublesome in coal preparation plants where soluble salts and sulfur in the coal produce a highly corrosive wash solution. Abrasion is common in all operations where coal is handled or conveyed. Together, the acid-chloride-abrasion combination results in some of the worst corrosive conditions found in any industry. The variety of equipment and structures in the coal industry calls for different corrosion control techniques. Table 1 lists the areas of concern for a number of items. Just as there is a wide variety of corrosion problems, there is a wide array of coating materials available. Tables 2 and 3 are selection charts to provide guidance in narrowing down the choices. Experience has shown that a limited number of coating systems work best on coal equipment and structures. These systems are described in Table 4. The good-better-best designation in the table refers to coating system longevity. Good indicates the least costly and shortest service life. In nearly all cases the lowest annualized cost can be achieved by using the coating system rated best, due to the avoidance of costly repaints and unnecessary downtime. The most expensive coating system, though, is worthless unless the coating system is properly applied. Field inspection to insure compliance with specifications is an important aspect, and is a service available from many coating suppliers. Even the best coating systems require periodic maintenance to achieve satisfactory results. Spot rusting from mechanical damage should be repaired annually to maximize the coatingsystem's results.

In the present study, we have investigated the conditions for the formation of bubble clusters and the effect of well-defined agitation on the stability of clusters. A specially designed cell was used in which bubble clusters could be formed at the surface of a porous block in a fluidized bed of relatively coarse hydrophobic silica particles. The clusters then rose through a flow field of known turbulent characteristics. The size of the clusters before and after passing through the turbulent zone were measured using a high speed camera. The influence of shear rate on the deformation of the bubble clusters was investigated. The results showed that the Kolmogarov microscale was much smaller than the maximum cluster size, suggesting that the breakage of the clusters was mainly due to interaction with clusters in the inertial convection sub-range.

The 2,250-MW, coal-fired Navajo Generating Station located in Page, AZ draws water from Lake Powell using submersible pumps installed in five inclined shafts. Drought threatens to lower the reservoir to below the existing intakes. A system of new steel-lined intake shafts located on the same site was required for uninterrupted plant operation. The small size of the site, and the need to keep the existing system in operation, required detailed designs and placed significant limitations on construction equipment and activities. The Navajo Sandstone that forms the near vertical shoreline of the reservoir is 98 percent very fine grained quartz, highly abrasive and contains highly fractured intervals that presented numerous challenges to drilling the new 152-m (500-ft) deep, 109-cm (43-in.) diameter intake shafts inclined 23° to 26° from vertical. Spatial constraints, submersible pump design and operational criteria required that each shaft have a unique inclination and orientation and hit a small breakout target located 76 m (250 ft) under water. Sophisticated drilling equipment and techniques as well as state of the practice downhole survey technology and methods were used to make adjustments and maintain drilling accuracy with less than 1 percent deviation. Environmental requirements mandated water as the drilling fluid and grout was not allowed in to the lake under any circumstances. The shafts were videotaped and the breakout locations were examined using an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to verify shaft locations and rock conditions, and to guide placement of pneumatic packers to ensure grout did not transmit to the lake during the steel liner installation. In anticipation of the invasion of quagga mussels, the shaft design included an allowance for a chemical dosing system and a copper-rich alloy at the exposed portions of the steel liner.
