PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13-km (8-mile) overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is a conventional three-roller, 35 degree trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design resulted in a 5.4-m/sec (17.7-ft/sec) belt speed, 1,000 mm- (40 in.-) belt width to convey 1.35 kt/h (1,490 stph) and 7 Mt/a (7.7 million stpy) of coal. Despite a high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 m/sec (21 ft/sec) in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput in-crease. In 2002, a new low loss ST2100 1,100 mm- (43 in.-) wide belt replaced the ST2250 that was due to be changed-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to increase the OLC capacity to 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy). Upgrading the OLC by increasing the belt speed was the lowest capital option. Increasing belt width and/or modifying the trough angle to have larger cross sectional area was not an economical option because it would require expensive changes and significant down time of the OLC. To achieve 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy), the belt speed had to be increased to 8.5 m/sec (28 ft/sec). Although such high belt speed looked feasible, there was no information at that time of other OLC operating at such high speed. There was a risk that the conveyor would not operate safely and reliably at higher speeds. This risk was escalated by the fact there was no facility to lower or fine-tune the belt speed once the higher belt speed was implemented.

Currently six economic heavy mineral deposits are known on the Penholoway Terrace. These are (from south to north) the Green Cove Springs Mine (GCS), Boulogne Mine, Folkston Mine, Mission, Lulaton, and Ludowici. The GCS deposit is located to the west of Highway 17 between the towns of Green Cove Springs and Palatka in the state of Florida and has been mined since 1972. To the north, the erosion created by Black Creek restricts the northern extension of the orebodies and to the south a karst depression and erosion by the St. Johns River restrict southern extensions. The deposit is 20 miles long and up to 4.5 miles wide. Deposit thickness is from 5 feet up to 45 feet. The deposit is a series of regressive barrier island sequences deposited during the Pleistocene along the ancient Penholoway and Wicomico shorelines. The initial transgression of the ocean up to the location of the western Henry orebody was an extensive sea-level still stand as evidenced by the unit thickness and stacked transgressive regressive sequences. This period was followed by sporadic regressing seas and still stands, progressing eastward and stranding the sand bodies which make up the East Extended, TE, and East TE Ridge orebodies. The orebodies are underlain by predominantly non-mineralized fluvial sands and occasional back barrier lagoonal deposited clays. There is a predominance of wetlands on the southern extents of the zone as the surface elevations decrease due to a large karst depression.

An overwhelming amount of data can be collected around the blasting process. This information can include blasting product, pattern design, blast results, and routing. It is only when these data sources are combined in a concise and accurate form that they are of real use in determining the safety and economic implications of each parameter. Two key technological aspects of blasting are drill fleet management (DFM) and size fraction analysis (SFA). As these technologies are integrated as near-real-time measurement and QA/QC tools, the resolution and realization of blasting parameters is significantly increased. The Freeport-McMoRan Morenci Mine has integrated these technologies along with other existing database structures to create a responsive and sustainable tool for reconciliation, forecasting and parameter matching. This ability allows Morenci to customize blast patterns to meet the criteria most critical to each shot, whether the impact is influenced by routing and recovery, equipment maintenance or safety concerns. DRILL FLEET MANAGEMENT The current DFM was stabilized in its current form in mid 2009 after database and hardware maintenance met stability requirements. Currently the system is running on 12 production drills. The system receives pattern layout and is capable of semi-autonomous drilling over the entire district. The fleet is capable of drilling in highly altered intrusive units and hard granites through the range of sedimentary and volcanic units that comprise the Morenci District. The system brings a level of accuracy not achievable with earlier paint-marked patterns. Depth control is also increased along with more consistent wear and maintenance patterns due to semi-autonomous drilling.

Industries are challenged to meet increasingly stringent regulations for selenium and metals. Cost-effective treatment is required to minimize the economic impact of environmental compliance. Low-cost biological treatment of selenium can be achieved passively using biochemical reactor cells composed of natural organic media components such as wood chips, sawdust, hay, composted manure, and peat. The reactor cells create an anaerobic microenvironment for biological reduction and sequestration of selenium and other metals. Biochemical reactors can be combined with constructed wetlands for flow equalization and to remove the organic byproducts in reactor cell outflow. Passive treatment reduces capital cost and operational effort compared to more expensive and complex physical and chemical treatment. Recent pilot and full-scale projects by mining companies and by the US Bureau of Reclamation demonstrate that passive treatment can achieve compliance with selenium concentrations over a range of flows and environmental conditions. Case histories of passive selenium treatment systems and their key findings are provided, and prospects for future applications are summarized.

Semisoluble salt minerals are characterized by their ionic bonding and are distinguished from soluble salt minerals by their limited solubility in water. One group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the alkaline earth salt minerals, including fluorite (CaF2), calcite (CaCO3) and apatite (Ca5F (PO4)3), as well as celestite (SrSO4) and barite (BaSO4). Another group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the rare-earth salts, which include bastnaesite ((Ce, La) CO3F), monazite (CePO4) and xenotime (YPO4). Surface chemistry features of these selected semisoluble salt minerals are discussed with respect to flotation separations. First, the surface chemistry features of alkaline earth semisoluble salt minerals are reviewed, and then the surface chemistry features of rare-earth semisoluble salt minerals are examined. The discussion includes electrokinetic behavior, wetting characteristics and collector adsorption.

Sustained elevated metal and coal prices in 2011 continued to drive mining projects across British Columbia. The province is the top producer of copper, exporter of coal and the only producer of molybdenum in Canada. The province also produces significant amounts of gold, silver, lead and zinc and more than 30 industrial minerals. The total 2011 value of solid metal production is an estimated $8.6 billion and the outlook for 2012 is positive. British Columbia is poised to bring several new mines onstream in the next few years. Construction continues at the New Afton and Mt Milligan copper-gold projects that are anticipated to be open in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The provincial Environmental Assessment Office indicates there are 26 mine proposals in process with three currently under review and 23 in the preapplication stage. The following text briefly describes 2011 metal and coal mining activities in the five regions reported on by the provinces? regional geologists (Fig. 1).

At the present time, whether an electric utility uses high-sulfur coal is largely determined by geographical location, clean air legislation, and the age of the power plant. Acid rain legislation may well be the new force to change the use of high-sulfur coal. A number of coal papers were presented at the SME Fall Meeting in St. Louis, MO, Sept. 1986. These papers discussed high-sulfur coal in relation to its economics, trends and prospects, value of cleaned coal, and coal-cleaning technology. The Clean Air Act of 1970 required the reduction of SO, emissions from most stationary electric-generating plant to 0.5 kg (1.2 lbs) SO2, per million Btu of heat input. It was possible for many plants to utilize lower-sulfur coal or a mixture of high-sulfur and low-sulfur coal to meet this emission requirement. This 1970 act greatly increased the use of low-sulfur western coal. The 1978 amendment to the Clean Air Act required all new plants to use Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) to meet a requirement of 70% reduction of potential SO2 emissions to 0.3 kg (0.6 lb) SO2 per million Btu of heat input. With the requirement to use FGD, there was little or no demand for low-sulfur western coal in new eastern power plants. If' new acid rain legislation is enacted, it likely will require sizeable reductions in SO2, emissions by existing coal users. There might then be a shift to greater use of low-sulfur coals. The low-sulfur coals could come from either western or eastern mines or from cleaned eastern coals. Economics will dictate the approach older power plants will take to meet new regulationsuse FGD or low-sulfur coal. Coal use for electric power generation has changed from 1970 to 1985. Table 1, (Land, preprint 86-333) shows the change. The table shows that in 1985, US utilities used about 255 Mt (280 million st) of high-sulfur coal. Some 45 to 54 Mt (50 to 60 million st) of high-sulfur coal is being used in plants equipped with FGD and most of this use is in eastern states. This leaves 200 to 209 Mt/a (220 to 230 million st) of high-sulfur coal being used without FGD treatment. These plants are at risk if acid rain legislation is passed. Most of these plants are in the east and are more difficult to supply with low-sulfur coal. Estimates range from $20 to $30 billion capital investment and from $5 to $9 billion dollars per year operating costs to reduce SO2, emissions from those old medium-to-high-sulfur coal-burning plants. G. W. Land, (preprint 86-333), also presents tables relating to power generating costs and coal types. The author's tables are extracted from Land's tables IV and V. Table 2 here presents costs for a new plant. This includes the impact of different heat rates, fuel costs, fuel qualities, operating and maintenance costs, labor costs, and waste disposal costs. Table 3 compares estimated costs to retrofit an older plant with a limestone scrubber versus switching the same plant to low-sulfur eastern or western coal. Costs of switching include upgrading the electrostatic precipitator and - with western coal - costs of derating. Bhagwat, (preprint 86-325), details the trends in high-sulfur coal markets from 1974 to 1984. He also gives some prospects for high-sulfur coal markets, 1984 to 1994. The prospect depends mostly on whether acid rain legislation is enacted. By 1994, if New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) continue to be applied, high-sulfur coal demand from six mid-west and eastern states is expected to increase by 27 Mt (30 million st). • L. A. This need for improving performance of calcium carbonate has led to the development of new sources of calcium carbonate, natural as well as synthetic.

In the April issue of Mining Engineering there is a technical note "New size laboratory ball mill for Bond Work Index determination" written by M. Nematollahi which is very confusing. My recollection is that a description of an experimental procedure should be such that someone skilled in the art should be able to reproduce the results. Applying this test to this particular article would according to me cause a failure to be registered. There are apparently three batch laboratory test procedures referred to in the article. One of these is the traditional Bond test with all its limitations such as dry grinding followed by exclusively dry screening, two attributes which fail to simulate conventional industrial grinding. There is a second procedure (NSBM) which the author is advocating as an improvement of the Bond procedure but from the description I doubt that anyone would be able to repeat the procedure. For instance, is the grinding to be done wet or dry, if wet at what pulp density, and how is the screening to be done, wet or dry or a combination?

On a regular basis, mine personnel should obtain air samples directly from active underground areas as well as remotely from sealed locations. These samples provide mine officials with data relative to the makeup of the various atmospheres. Should conditions underground change, these results can provide a baseline that can assist officials in determining the extent of change. Relating the concentrations of individual gases to time, applying gases to equations, and examining their change over time are tools that have been successfully used to determine if a heating event exists and, if so, the extent of the emergency. These atmospheric status equations have either been developed for the mining industry or adapted from other industries. They serve as tools to assist personnel in determining the condition of underground mine atmospheres. As long as the problem area continues to be ventilated, certain gases, gas ratios, and equations can be used to determine if a fire exists, what type of material could be burning, and what quantity of coal is burning. Once the mine or the involved section has been temporarily sealed, gases, ratios, and gas-derived equations can assist personnel in determining how conditions within the sealed volume are changing over time. To alleviate potential explosions when fresh air is once again introduced into the sealed volume, equations and a diagram have been developed to predict the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere. Similarly, prior to commencing recovery of a mine or section, equations exist that can assist in determining if the fire will rekindle when air is reintroduced. This paper serves as an overview to remind and/or instruct readers about gas-sampling methodologies and gas analyses to assist in determining the status of underground atmospheres.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2010 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2010: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2010, as compiled by the USGS, and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities. These were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

Ion exchange (IX) has been in use for a long time, references to IX are made in The Bible, Exodus Chapter 15 vs. 22-25 ?and the waters were made sweet?.1, 2 Aristotle noted a reduction in the salt content of water when passed through certain types of sand, a phenomena probably associated with ion exchange characteristics of zeolites. Some major milestones in IX development include; ? ~ 1400 BC Moses ? ~ 330 BC Aristotle ? 1850 the discovery of the IX process3 ? 1909 Gans proposed zeolites for gold recovery ? 1935 sulfonated coals used for water softening ? 1939 copper recovery from Rayon Production ? 1940 The Rare Earth Project at Ames ? 1952 first South African U IX mine at West Rand (first SX of U using amines 1957) ? 1954 first U IX in USA at Shiprock Mine N.M. Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ? Uranium, Thorium and transuranic elements ? Rare Earths ? Gold, Silver and platinum group metals (PGM?s) ? Chromium, Copper, Zinc, Nickel, Cobalt ? Refractory Metals; Molybdate, Vanadate, Tungstate, Rhenium Mercury.

Management of mine and tailings reclamation activities by surface mining oil sands operations in Alberta, Canada is experiencing increased national and international attention. Of particular concern is the ability of existing mines to execute and fund reclamation activities. Concern stems from a lack of demonstrated tailings reclamation technologies, perceptions of a poor track-record of reclamation activity by industry, and a lack of transparency with respect to the potential cost of reclamation activities relative to the monies secured in Alberta?s Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF). Limited information is publicly available regarding reclamation costs and technologies. Available data typically comes from disparate sources. This paper examines the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) liabilities, the Province of Alberta?sEPSF, and published data relating to reclamation costs.Issues relating to current liability funding are introduced.

Mechanical mining is steadily gaining usage in the mining industry. A variety of machines currently finds employment: tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, continuous miners, surface miners, and augers. These machines have advantages compared to drill and blast mining methods, including increased safety, lower cost, uniform muck size, and accurately sized openings. A century of experience with mechanical methods has already paid dividends to the coal industry. Current trends guarantee eventual development of true general-purpose hardrock mechanical mining machines. Mechanical miners will become integrated mining systems and will determine the design of mines, when several significant challenges have been met.

Hindered-bed separators are recognized as low-cost, high-capacity devices for both classification and density separation; however, since their inception, there have been few significant advances in the fundamental technology. Recently, Eriez has shown through modeling and pilot-scale testing that the innovative approach to feed presentation offered in the CrossFlow teeter-bed separator provides improved metallurgy when compared to traditional hindered-bed classifiers or single-stage coal spirals. This design feature prevents excess water from entering the separation chamber and disrupting the overall fluidization flow rate within the teeter zone. Most recently, a side-by-side industrial scale evaluation has verified that this technology improves overall efficiency and simultaneously reduces the separation cut-point. With regards to coal processing, data from full-scale units indicate that the CrossFlow offers good separation efficiency, high unit capacity, and metallurgical results consistent with laboratory- and pilot-scale separators.

The assurance of future raw materials supply to the EU mineral industry has become, in recent years, one of the most important tasks of the EU Commission. It is focused on creation a new mineral policy within the EU zone. One of the starting points for this activity was identification of the mineral commodities that are critical for the sustainable development and technological progress. The paper presents the glance to this problem from the National Member level. Domestic mineral reserve base as a possible source of critical raw materials for the EU was shown. Poland cannot be considered as its resource base. The source of these raw materials are not only scarce in Poland, but also they are not produced, and their demand is now - and according to forecasts is going to be in the future - met by imports. The raw materials in question are not considered exactly critical for Polish economy, but they are of limited economic importance. On the other hand, their growth is a best opportunity and at once the need to the future sustainable development.

Past failures of coal refuse embankments have resulted in intensified efforts in inspections of coal refuse sites by the Mining. Enforcement, and Safety Administration (MESA). MESA inspections however, are mainly qualitative and are often time consuming, Therefore, in August 1975 CH2M HILL was awarded a contract to identify, develop, and test a rapid system for monitoring coal refuse embankments to aid in MESA inspections. The rapid monitoring system developed uses convergent and vertical photography from conventional fixed-wing aircraft. The system was tested on an active landslide and on two coal refuse facilities using both black and white and color infrared film. Field tests showed the system was capable of accurate measurement while providing qualitative data through photo interpretation. The accuracy of the system allows it to be used to monitor coal refuse embankments, tailings dams, major earth dams, and natural slopes. Based on CH2M HILL results cost for monitoring by rapid system was approximately 25 percent of cost by conventional ground survey.

Currently, there are several techniques and technologies available which are used by mining industry in its attempts to remotely monitor the ground movements both at surface and underground mines. The currently available remote distance meters and distance change monitors mainly use phase change and time-of-flight techniques. The described monitor uses triangulation technique to track position of an optical spot projection and then image processing to measure mine wall movements. The system can be easily automated and poses no obstruction to mine traffic. The position of an off-normal laser spot will shift as the target wall moves. The described ground movement monitoring system has potential for superior accuracy and target monitoring can be made through air (gaseous) or other transparent media. The theoretical accuracy and range of this system depends solely on the resolution and focal length of the camera being used. The remote capabilities of the system make it uniquely suited to applications where monitoring is required in high-traffic, inaccessible, or unstable and dangerous areas of a mine.
