Currently, there are several techniques and technologies available which are used by mining industry in its attempts to remotely monitor the ground movements both at surface and underground mines. The currently available remote distance meters and distance change monitors mainly use phase change and time-of-flight techniques. The described monitor uses triangulation technique to track position of an optical spot projection and then image processing to measure mine wall movements. The system can be easily automated and poses no obstruction to mine traffic. The position of an off-normal laser spot will shift as the target wall moves. The described ground movement monitoring system has potential for superior accuracy and target monitoring can be made through air (gaseous) or other transparent media. The theoretical accuracy and range of this system depends solely on the resolution and focal length of the camera being used. The remote capabilities of the system make it uniquely suited to applications where monitoring is required in high-traffic, inaccessible, or unstable and dangerous areas of a mine.

Appraisal of industrial minerals beneath privately owned land requires a different approach and mindset from valuation of base and precious metals or energy minerals, and from valuation of government-owned mineral lands. First, is it the value of inground minerals or of mining rights that is being sought? Second, value to whom, the mining company, a potential investor, the mineral landowner, a lending institution, the property tax assessor, or a condemnor? Third, how should mineral value be apportioned between the land and mineral owner, and a mining company with limited years of lease-hold interest? These and many other questions must be addressed before a valuation method and Discount Rate are selected. For various reasons the Income Method is most often used, with Net Present Value calculations made for long term predicted mining income. Choice of an appropriate Discount Rate is critical.

In-situ leaching (ISL) operations have been proposed to recover uranium from sandstone-uranium deposits in NM. ISL (also known as in-situ recovery, solution mining, solution-leach mining, leach mining) consists of injecting a leaching solution into the mineralized zone through injection wells. The leach solution migrates through the formation, dissolves uranium and is recovered through production wells. The uranium is then precipitated through a conventional uranium recovery system. Several criteria must be met in order for in-situ leaching to be successful, most important is that the ore body must be amenable to chemical leaching. A number of ISL operations have been conducted in NM in the past (Mobil, Crownpoint; UNC-Teton, Section 23; Grace Nuclear, Hook?s Ranch, Seboyeta, Church Rock; Anaconda, Windwhip). Kerr-McGee (later Quivera Mining Co., Rio Algum) successfully produced uranium from mine-water recovery (recirculated mine water) from the Ambrosia Lake mines (mid-1960s to 2002). Despite some difficulties, ISL is a viable alternative to recovering uranium and could be utilized in the Grants district with proper aquifer characterization and monitoring.

Classical acid-base accounting using modified Sobek titration methods has resulted in interpretation of results for materials with neutralization potential (NP) less than 20 tons of CaCO3/1000 tons of material (2% CaCO3) as "uncertain" due to lack of sensitivity within that content range. Standardization of a "fizzless" acid neutralization potential (ANP) method was undertaken in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International using two ranges of sulfuric acid additions based on reaction pH and carbonate carbon estimates rather than subjective fizz testing as well as hydrogen peroxide additions to correct for mineral acidity. The method is identified as the acid neutralization potential acidity (ANPA) titration method. During interlaboratory testing a positive bias was discovered within the "uncertain" range which was further investigated and resolved by increasing the test sample weight from one to five grams for samples needing improved accuracy in materials with ANP <2% CaCO3. Test results from the interlaboratory testing of the low range method is presented and compared with the results from the original ANPA method in the paper.

Past failures of coal refuse embankments have resulted in intensified efforts in inspections of coal refuse sites by the Mining. Enforcement, and Safety Administration (MESA). MESA inspections however, are mainly qualitative and are often time consuming, Therefore, in August 1975 CH2M HILL was awarded a contract to identify, develop, and test a rapid system for monitoring coal refuse embankments to aid in MESA inspections. The rapid monitoring system developed uses convergent and vertical photography from conventional fixed-wing aircraft. The system was tested on an active landslide and on two coal refuse facilities using both black and white and color infrared film. Field tests showed the system was capable of accurate measurement while providing qualitative data through photo interpretation. The accuracy of the system allows it to be used to monitor coal refuse embankments, tailings dams, major earth dams, and natural slopes. Based on CH2M HILL results cost for monitoring by rapid system was approximately 25 percent of cost by conventional ground survey.

A computerized "Decision Support System" was used to evaluate an "Underground Platform Approach to Oil Recovery". Over a billion calculations were required to model the mine layouts; learning curves for shaft, tunnel, and well drilling scenarios; detailed cost, schedule, and resource data; complex oil production and material balance data; varying reservoir parameters; and complex oil pricing curves. Simplified "optimum" solutions were defined in terms of muck hoisting capacity, barrels of oil per day, and present worth. Complex "optimum" solutions were defined in terms of minimal exposure scenarios during development followed by shortest time to full production.

Acceptable working environments in production areas and service openings of Mindola Mine on the Zambian Copperbelt are currently maintained with an air volume of 1000 cu m/s and 5500 kW of installed refrigeration plant. It is planned to open up additional deeper areas of the mine for future production. Temperature problems, due to the increased heat generation from various underground sources are recognized as potential hinderances to efficient production. Findings of research work indicate that the present total heat output of 58,000 kW will inevitably increase by the second five-year period of the deepening program to 52,900 kW and by the fifth five-year period to 63,200 k\V. Estimated WB and DB temperatures, representing the total heat generation in stope faces and development headings during these same periods are predicted to increase to 53.8/40.2 °C and 35.5/42.1 °C respectively. It is assessed that the nominal refrigeration capacity needs to be progressively increased to 9,000 k\V This paper deals with the thermal problems in Mindola Mine, current heat output calculations, future prediction of temperature and heat load in various working areas of the mine with the application of computer programs and interpretation of data in order to find the effective solution for long-term planning of ventilation and air-conditioning.

Work related pulmonary diseases are in the top TEN causes of occupational disability and death in the United States. Likewise, it also ranks high inmost of the other industrial countries. It is difficult to know the true occurrence of occupational lung disease because of poor documentation. This is especially true when one examines workers’ compensation claims. Most frequently, silica and asbestos are paramount in our discussion of work related pulmonary disease. Little consideration is given to other “dust-related” diseases, irritant reactions, reactive airway responses, and hypersensitivity reactions. The major classification of occupational lung diseases will be discussed. This includes both acute and chronic disease that arises in the work place, especially, the mining industry. It’s more important to make an accurate evaluation and diagnosis for the prevention of disease among other workers.

A study has been conducted to control iron in copper electrolyte streams using Eichrom Industries’s new Monophosphonic /sulphonic acid resin. The resin strongly and selectively extracts ferric ion over copper and cobalt from highly acidic copper electrolytes. The resin has a loading capacity of 27 g/L of iron and can be readily regenerated. In addition, the new resin can be easily synthesized using commercially available starting materials. This paper presents the experimental results for iron control in copper electrolyte streams using the new resin and discusses its potential applications to other hydro-metallurgical streams.

The Morenci concentrate leach plant construction was completed and successfully commissioned in October 2007. The plant was designed to operate at medium temperature, 160ºC and pressure, 2,100 kPa. The concentrate leach plant utilized many innovative design features. This paper examines the first year?s operation, the challenges, the successes and the lessons learned. The future plans for Morenci concentrate leaching will also be presented.

Next year, in 1964, Butte will celebrate its Centennial. It was in May, 1864, that the first recorded mining activity took place. During that summer, several rich placers were found on Silver Bow Creek and its tributaries, and a gold rush followed. As placer mining proceeded in the creek beds, the quartz lodes on the hillsides were located and the veins were prospected. Mining in Butte entered its second phase when the rich silver mines, the Alice, Moulton, and Lexington, were opened. The silver boom lasted until the decline in the price of silver in the early 1890&apos;s forced the closure of many of the mines. An indication of the beginning of the copper mining era in Butte was in 1866 when it was noticed that green copper carbonate discolored some of the, lode material. It was not until ten years later, however, that the Anaconda and St. Lawrence claims were located by Michael and Ed Hickey. The claims were sold in 1880 to Marcus Daly and in 1881, Daly obtained financing and organized the Anaconda Silver Mining Company to exploit the vein The silver venture was a failure because of the predominance of copper which diluted the bullion to only 400 fine.

Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within daciteporphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding meta sediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in meta sediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna.Several new gold discoveries were made in older EarlyTertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

To accommodate growth in air service and to follow the Master Plan for long-term airport development, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority established thed2 Development Program at Washington Dulles International Airport. A sub-surface Automated People Mover (APM) System is under construction to replace the Mobile Lounges as the primary people mover system at Dulles. To minimize disruption to airport operations the majority of the APM System’s crossings of Taxi lanes will be undertaken using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) or the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). This paper explores the planning and design of these shallow tunnel segments for future generation aircraft loads, within the constraints of minimal construction access under post 9/11 security requirements and the context of the overall airport expansion program.

INTRODUCTION In radon dosimetry diffusion chambers with passive [a]-detectors are now in current use to investigate the long-term accumulated indoor exposure of radon and daughters. For the diffusion chamber developed at Karlsruhe the electrochemical etching technique (ECE) was applied to reveal [a]-particles in polycarbonate plastic detectors. Compared to conventional etching, the main advantages of the ECE are the large track diameter, simple track counting in a single field of about 1 cm2, stability of the latent tracks to humidity and temperature and ability for a long-term accumulation up to 1 year. The electrochemical etching system was designed to etch in one run about 101 foils by using a 200 W high voltage generator. The commercial available radon dosimeter system is applied for a country wide program of measuring radon in dwellings. Because of an increasing interest of radon monitoring in mines, environmental monitoring and personnel dosimetry the properties of several track etch detectors have been studied. In the comparative study, Makrofol E, LR 115 and CR 39 were used in the diffusion chamber to investigate the etching techniques, the relative efficiency, the measurable [a]-energy range, and the counting statistic for the measurement of radon concentration. THE KARLSRUHE DIFFUSION CHAMBER The design of the Karlsruhe diffusion chamber is presented in Fig. 1. The upper part of the chamber is closed by a fibreglass filter to separate radon from aerosols, heavy dust particles and radon decay products. Inside the diffusion chamber [a]-particles from radon and daughters are detected by two passive radon detectors, one on the bottom of the chamber and the other in front of the filter. With the fibreglass filter applied the diffusion time is about 1 minute for radon. Therefore, also short-term variations in the radon concentration are recorded by the track detector. Mainly because of the short halflife of thoron (56 s) only about 7 % of the thoron concentration is expected in the diffusion chamber. Radon monitoring provides the estimation of the long-term accumulated mean value of the radon concentration with a lowest detectable concentration of 0.1 pCi/1 after 3 months accumulation by using polycarbonate track etch detectors, an electrochemical etching technique and track counting in a single field of 1 cm2. The diffusion chamber was optimized for the polycarbonate track detector with respect to chamber geometry and detector position [1]. Table 1 presents data for 3 different diffusion chamber designs. The radon sensitivity of the diffusion chamber depends on the [a]-energy discrimination and the angular response of the [a]-track detector. The difference between foil No 2 and foil No 1 can be explained by an additional plate-out effect of radon daughters on foil No 3. The high sensitivity of foil No 3 compared to that of foil No 2 is caused by an increase of the effective volume and the effective area for [a]-particle from radon and from plated-out decay products, respectively. Additional experiments have been performed in order to investigate the electrostatic properties of the plastic material and the properties of the diffusion filter [1]. The properties of bare a-detectors were compared with those inside the diffusion chamber. In contrast to laboratory results, dust particles deposited on the detector surface or in the environment of the detector obviously affect the reproducibility of the bare detector significantly. After 4 months exposure in dwellings the scatter of 10 dosimeters exposed in the same room exceeds a factor of 3 compared to 15 % for the diffusion chamber. COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TRACK ETCH DETECTORS Detector types and evaluation technique In the comparative study the properties of the following plastic track etch detectors have been applied: - LR 115 from Kodak Pathé, France, is a red dyed cellulose nitrate layer of 13 µm thickness on a 100 µm thick polyester support. The holes appears as bright spots in a dark red background. In an optical microscope counting of through etched [a]-tracks which must penetrate the detector layer - CR 39 from Pershore, England, is an ally1 diglycol carbonate plastic of about 300 m thickness. The normal etched [a]-tracks are counted by an optical microscope and the ECE [a]-tracks by a microfiche reader.

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the Cost Approach category for Real Property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves, and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties.

Particle size analysis is a fundamental measurement utilized in the mining industry, especially in comminution, hydrometallurgy, and mineral processing. While sieves and cyclosizers are the standard methods used to determine particle size distributions, in recent years alternative instruments have been developed that claim to provide more rapid and equally reliable results. Newmont Metallurgical Services has implemented the use of two such instruments, along with traditional methods (sieves and a cyclosizer), on a daily basis. The Malvern Mastersizer 2000 laser analyzer is a wet sample system that can analyze particles in the size range 0.02µm to 2000µm, and the Horiba CAMSIZER® is a dry system that can analyze particles in the size range of 30µm to 30mm using digital image processing. A comparative analysis has been performed to determine the applicability of each particle sizing method in laboratory testing.

The Golden Grove Project area is located 220 km (137 miles) east of Geraldton in Western Australia (Fig. 1). The project is a joint venture involving Amax Exploration (Australia) Inc. (Amax), Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. (EZ), and Esso Exploration & Production Australia Inc. (Esso), each with 31 116% interest, and Aztec Exploration Pty., Ltd. (Aztec), with a 3 1/2% carried and a 3% contributing interest. The venture covers two significant volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits and some 40 km (25 miles) of highly prospective Archean volcanics. During the course of the past 12 years (to 1983), all four companies were responsible for operating the project at one time or another and all influenced the discoveries. The Gossan Hill and Scuddles deposits are typical examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits associated with Archean explosive submarine acid to intermediate volcanic complexes. They are located in the northwesterly trending Yalgoo greenstone belt of the West Australian Archean Shield. Gossan Hill, located in 1972, is essentially a copper deposit with minor zinc lenses; to date, 97 diamond holes have delineated a geological resource* estimated to contain 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of of 3.4% Cu and 13 g/t (0.38 oz per ton) Ag in the main lenses with minor lenses totaling 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of 3.7% Cu and 17 g/t (0.49 oz per ton) Ag and 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st) grading 1.5% Pb, 14% Zn, and 87 g/t (2.8 oz per ton) Ag. Scuddles is a zinc-copper deposit with gold and silver credits. It *Resource estimate provided by Esso for inclusion in Aztec Exploration Pty. Ltd. 1982 Annual Report was discovered in 1979 and, to the end of 198 1, had been delineated with 42 diamond holes. On the basis of this drilling, a geological resource* of 26 Mt (28.7 million st) has been estimated in three coalescing lenses. The lenses comprise 7.5 Mt (8.3 million st) of 2.1 % Cu, 12 g/t (0.35 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.3 g/t (0.009 oz per ton) Au; 7.6 Mt (8.4 million st) of 0.4% Cu, 9.9% Zn, 73 g/t (2.3 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.7 g/t (0.02 oz per ton) Au; and 1 1.0 Mt (1 2.1 mil lion st) of 1.1 % Cu, 9.3% Zn, 8 1 g/t (2.6 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz per ton) Au. Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher. The pregnant solution is processed by a conventional closed circuit Merrill-Crowe system. The pregnant solution is clarified through three 158 L/sec (2500 gpm) US Filter Auto-jet clarifiers. Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for about 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In some recent years, the number of ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, last year?s Crandall Canyon twin mine disasters, in which 9 miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990?s these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents in the past 5 years. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery. Safer mining technologies have reduced the number of fatal incidents, but some recent failures have underlined the need for careful management of the retreat mining process. On the other hand, more than 400 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports, and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities. Available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting, and inside control roof bolters could dramatically reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety. Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces.
