"Liebherr, as most anyone involved with the global mining industry knows, is one of the world’s largest makers of mining and construction heavy equipment. The familyowned company has been around since the 1940s and, according to Stefan Heissler, by the end of next year, will employ about 44,500 people worldwide. Heissler is a member of the board of directors of Liebherr International AG.It all started for the Switzerland-based company when Hans Liebherr first recognized a need for heavy equipment in the construction industry, Heissler said. His first product, introduced in 1949, was the TK10, a mobile crane that, at the time, was a groundbreaking innovation to the heavy construction industry. From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."

"Grout backfill strategy for a particular subsurface concrete tunnel (~4.9km long, 3.5m in diameter, carrying 20” gas pipeline) was based on achieving 1:100 slope of the fill in order to progressively fill the tunnel, in a series of 350m section. Grout rheology, particularly its non-Newtonian and thixotropic behavior, determines the final fill slope for given backfill strategy. The objective of this study was to simulate the two-phase grout mix backfill process using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and determine the slope of the fill to validate and optimize the backfill strategy. Three dimensional CFD study showed that for a 500m long tunnel section with a single injection point of grout, given its rheology, it will likely keep flowing without filling the 500m section height wise. Design optimization for filling was carried out using two dimensional studies to make the backfill process “slope independent” by incorporating a 2.5m high bulkhead at ~1,000m. INTRODUCTION As part of a gas field development a 20” onshore gas pipeline is required from the landfall site to the processing terminal some 8km inland. At the landfall site the gas pipeline is routed in a ~5km underground tunnel underneath a bay. For operational reasons and planning consents as well as to mitigate environmental impact based on an environmental impact study, once the gas pipeline and the associated services and spares have been installed, the subsurface gas tunnel will be fully grouted. There will be no permanent access to the tunnel after construction is completed and the site compounds have been reinstated once works are complete. One of the key requirements is that “full grouting of the tunnel” is desired. The grouting material used is a non-Newtonian and thixotropic fluid mixture of bentonite, cement, plasticizer, retarder/stabilizer and water. The tunnel is filled progressively in 350m sections using a combination of existing and new pipework assuming the grout rheology will yield a fill slope of 1:100 in a 350m section. The proposed grouting system used one pump at the grouting compound to pump the grout into the tunnel using the existing tunneling pipework. For the longer runs a second booster pump was used in series to pump the grout to its final discharge location. The filling process is controlled via a system of flow meters, pressure transmitters and a tunnel CCTV system."

The Lomas Bayas copper property is located93 km (58 miles) east of Antofagasta, Region II, Chile (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1880. The deposit produced intermittently until 1992. Production at Lomas Bayas took place in high-grade veins and breccias mined underground. During 1991, Empresa Minera Mantos Blancos SA (EMMB) optioned the property from Compania Doña Ada SA. Doña Ada maintained the right to continue mining the ores by open-pit and block-caving methods and hauling the ore to its plant located60 km (37 miles) to the north. EMMB conducted exploration and column test programs. On May 9, 1994, Compania Minera Gibraltar Ltda.(CMGL) signed a purchase option agreement to acquire the Lomas Bayas property. CMGL conducted 8,612 m(9,490 ft) of reverse-circulation drilling, 2,028 m (6,650ft) of diamond drilling, a series of metallurgical tests and geologic mapping. The company then decided to exercise its purchase option.

This paper describes the U. S. Energy Research and Development Administration's (ERDA) program to develop in situ coal conversion processes, especially gasification, he potential of this technology, the technical directions being explored, and the program strategy to carry the process concepts toward commercialization are emphasized. The geographic location of the U. S. coal resources and a market analysis are described. Commercially successful in situ coal processes could add over a trillion tons of coal to the U. S. coal reserves. The economics of these processes is compared with surface gasification independent studies show this process to be 25Z cheaper than surface gasification for Western coals. The major projects are briefly described. The Linked Vertical Well process is in the lost advanced stage and shows great promise. The last test produced a low-Btu gas averaging 171 Btu per standard cubic foot for average pro¬duction rates of 5.5 million standard cubic feet per day. The other projects are Packed Bed, Longwall Generator, and Steeply Dipping Beds.

"The Regional Connector project is a complex subway light-rail project that runs through the heart of downtown Los Angeles, CA. The design-build contract was awarded in April 2014 to the Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), a joint venture between Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc. and Traylor Brothers Inc., and their designer team consisting of Hatch Mott McDonald (HMM) and subconsultants. The project broke ground on Sept. 30, 2014 and is expected to be completed in winter 2021-2022. The main components of the project consist of 6.4-m (21-ft) diameter twin-bored tunnels, three crosspassages, a 87-m (287-ft) long crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations, and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda and 1st Streets. The project map is shown in Fig. 1. The design and construction challenges associated with each of these main components are discussed in the following sections.Project designTunnels. The Regional Connector tunnels are located primarily within the Fernando formation consisting predominantly of extremely weak to very weak, massive, clayey siltstone. About 305 m (1,000 ft) of tunnels on the eastern end are in alluvium and mixed face of Fernando formation and alluvium. The tightest curve of the tunnel alignment is 178 m (583 ft) in radius. The tunnels were designed with a reinforced precast concrete tunnel lining (PCTL) to be used with an earth balance pressurized (EPB) tunnel boring machine. The PCTL ring is 5.5 m (18 ft-10 in.) inside diameter, 27 cm (10.5 ft) thick, 1.5 m (5 ft) long, and consists of five segments and a key. The segments were designed with 6,500 psi concrete, 80 ksi yield strength wire rebar, convex joint surfaces to enhance seismic performance, and a dosage of 1.7 lbs polypropylene microfibers per cubic yard of concrete for fire resistance. The rings are designed with a right ring and left ring pattern and a taper of 3.8 cm (1.5 ft) to allow for alignment curve negotiation. Figure 2 shows typical sections of the PCTL. The structural lining design was modeled using FLAC 3D. Four consecutive rings were modeled with 32 dowel connection. Loading considered in the lining design includes temporary ground load during excavation, long-term ground loads, seismic loads and train loads. The seismic loads on the PCTL were simulated with the racking deformation applied at vertical boundaries of the model. Due to variation of geologic condition along the tunnel alignment and different surcharge requirements, three different types of reinforcement (typical, heavy and extra heavy) were designed. The typical type PCTL was required in Fernando formation, the heavy type was required in alluvium or mixed-face condition, and the extra heavy type was required in alluvium and underneath the Japanese Village Plaza where a surcharge of 1,000 psf was required."

Introduction Industrial minerals are key ingredients in a large majority of domestic and industrial products that are used in our daily lives. In the 7th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, fifty three industrial mineral commodities are described. A precise definition of industrial minerals and rocks is difficult. Bates (1975) proposed a definition which is widely used and is as follows: "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics". They can be igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary and range in price from a few dollars per ton to a very high price of hundreds of dollars per ton. The growth in their production and use is closely allied with population growth particularly in countries that maintain a high standard of living. The United States just passed 300 million in population and it is predicted that by 2040 the population will be 400 million. This will result in large increases in the need for Industrial minerals. Other factors that relate to increased use of industrial minerals are increased research and development by the producing companies and better quality control. Many industrial minerals such as kaolin, barite, nepheline syenite, fluorspar, lithium carbonate, phosphate rock, potash, talc, and several others are exported from the producing countries to many users around the world which has significantly increased their use. Also, government agencies, State Geological Surveys, and Universities have contributed to their growth by their research and development activities.

If the past is the key to the future, we will have ?tough? times maintaining Industrial Mineral reserves we have and proving new reserves around our plants and in new locations. The tough times will come from resources being more difficult to find, more hoops to go thru to make them Proven or Probable reserves. As always, Industrial Minerals require competitive quality, location, and costs. Since in most cases the market has suppliers, you will have to take away customers from their present supplier. This may take years or not happen even with lower cost higher quality raw materials. To determine the finished cost for a new deposit you need to design, determine capital costs, and operating costs for a new plant . Stripping, mining, hauling, processing, and transportation costs are part of the equation. After satisfying that your costs are in line you will need to do production tests to make sure the process works on the ore. You may want to complete permitting before purchasing the property. If you are new in the business you will have to prove you can deliver the right quality, the right quantity, on time consistently year after year at lower cost to take away a customer. Without being in the market this will be hard. The cut off grades to enter a market may be much lower than sale indicates because a competitor often lowers the price to keep you out of the market. We have many more items to check before the new deposits can be put on reserves. Our old reserves will require drilling to check for new products and prove that they do not contain items that would make them unusable for our product line or cause permitting problems. Archeological checks, wetlands, more water discharge testing, county zoning, and endangered species are among many items that have been added to mine permits. There will be more. A 4-6 page mining permit becomes 30-300 pages and consists of 5-15 permits, any of which might be a fatal stumbling block. It is not guaranteed that we can mine what we have on reserves. We may fight and lose. Oil-Dri?s loss in Reno and LaPort?s in England are examples where permitting failed. The NOx, sulfur, and carbon problems are just starting. Dioxin is in the background requiring monitoring on food products to Europe. What other anions, cations, endangered species, and land types are going to be problems in the future are guesses now. What new products are we going to have to test for and cause out of balance reserves? If there are none we probably won?t be here. We are competing for land use with ?Endangered Species?, wetlands, farming, forestry, cities, roads, and hunting. We?ve mined the best quality, low overburden, easiest to mine and process raw materials. The price of land and taxes are increasing. Old royalties are 2-3 times the present acre value instead of 8-10 times the property value when leased. Land taxes are up. It was and is best that we get the land in Fee Simple Title. This isn?t always possible. However, plants are closing and people have overlooked, made mistakes in drilling or interpretation of deposits. These may be opportunities. China is eating up high quality ?Industrial Minerals ?which have caused prices to rise. We may need to change our cutoffs? in terms of smaller pit sizes and higher overburden ratios. This is money in the bank. Overburden ratios and other items increasing cutoff costs need to be rethought. Suddenly doubling cutoff ratios for overburden and decreasing pit sizes are good alternatives to looking elsewhere where we might not be able to mine for a number of reasons. The higher prices make them competitive, especially when a competitor goes out of business. However, our low overburden ratios and short hauls around our plants are not safe from new roads, condemnation by county or city governments (N. J.), zoning changes (Reno, FL., CA, and environmental regulation changes (Buffers GA, MS). New roads ?Interstates? can take reserves, increase hauling distances and reduce tons per load. Let?s combine the Refractories, fullers earth, and bentonite industries and use the last 40 years as a guide to the future looking for problems and opportunities. Some or most of the following will apply to other minerals. WHERE DO WE LOOK? First, on our own properties, those next to our properties and on properties near our competitor?s plants. Where the profit margin has increased, the distance from the plant and thickness of overburden we can use is increased. The thickness of clay is decreased. For new locations we pick the ideal location and look at deposits and closed or open operations in ever increasing distances away from that location. We need to be aware of: 1. Increased transportation costs a. Access to Roads -Backhauls b. Haul with doubles and triples c. Railroads - Loading on sidings - Ability to get switches - Cars/backhauls versus rates 2. Cost of building a new plant 3. Cost of infrastructure 4. Cost of repair or new equipment when purchasing an operating or shutdown plant. 5. Local, state, and federal mine and environmental permitting. When exploring around an established operation expect that property acquisition, drilling, mining, stripping, and hauling costs will be greater due to them having second, third, or even fourth the pick of the deposits. I found this in New Jersey looking for refractories and around Quincy, Florida looking for attapulgite. You may be able to get some better properties because the operating company has angered some land owners, their drillers missed the clay, or the property wasn?t available when they were actively exploring for reserves. The main conditions which affect investment in mineral exploration and development are compared in five countries currently considered attractive for mineral investment - Canada, the U.S., Australia, Brazil and the Philippines. The primary parameters - the probability of occurrence and discovery of mineral deposits and the short and long term viability of mineral development - are evaluated and compared on a relative basis by a form of factor analysis. This analysis indicates that of the five countries studied, Canada is second only to the United States in degree of favourability for mineral exploration and development.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. Policies for reducing NOx emissions have led power plants to restrict O2, resulting in high-carbon fly ash production. Therefore, some potentially useful fly ash, such as the economizer fly ash, is discarded without a thorough knowledge of its composition. In order to characterize this type of fly ash, samples were collected from the economizer of a Portuguese power plant burning two low-sulfur bituminous coals. Characterization was also performed on economizer fly ash subsamples after wet sieving, density and magnetic separation. Analysis included atomic absorption spectroscopy, loss-on-ignition, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Micro-computers have made it practical to install a high-speed acquisition system to collect data from a longwall face in near real-time. By simultaneous data analyses using neural networks and fuzzy sets, information regarding longwall mining performance and underground behavior can be provided and forecasting longwall instability and detecting geological anomalies is feasible. This paper presents details of the application of neural networks and fuzzy sets in developing on-line evaluation of longwall roof behavior. Techniques for interpreting longwall shield pressures and characterizing roof conditions are discussed.

Introduction The concept of in-the-wall haulage was formally introduced to the mining community in the early 1970s. The basic concept is simple. Rather than the traditional in-the-pit haulage/access ramp, single or twin ramps driven in the pit wall are used with crosscut connections on the working levels. The in-the-wall pit haulage system could be considered as part of the opening of a new mine, a way of completing to final depth an existing pit, or part of the transition from open-pit to underground mining with the ramp remaining as part of the access. This paper is intended to acquaint the reader, particularly mine planning engineers, with some of the possibilities presented by the concept. Nordstrom (1983) said, "In many countries, mining engineers are either open-pit or underground specialists and, hence, often don't consider the possibilities for combining the best aspects of each into a hybrid mining system." This is believed to be true. There are few "hybrid mines" employing, for example, open-pit methods with underground haulage systems. One reason is the variance with the experience of the mining company and the engineers involved. However, with today's low metal prices, innovative and unconventional thinking may be just what a property requires to remain in production. All the possible situations where an in-the-wall ramp might be considered cannot be presented here. Rather, a few examples will be discussed for illustration purposes. Potential savings in stripping costs A major cost in open-pit mining is associated with the removal of overburden and waste rock. Although much of this stripping cannot be avoided, the volume (V) associated with the presence of an in-pit haul road can be quite large, V 100 (pit depth) a (road width) 2 x road grade (%) As an example, consider a vertical ore body 400 m (1312 ft) long, 60 m (197 ft) thick, extending to a depth of 160 m (525 ft). Cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Other data are: ore tonnage = 11 Mt (12 million st), ore density = 2.9 t/m3 (0.09 st per cu ft), waste rock density = 2.7 t/m3 (0.08 st per cu ft), road width = 20 m (66 ft), road gradient = 10%, and level interval = 10 m (33 ft). The evaluation has been made assuming that the pit slope (0) is constant around the pit except on the side with the haul road. On this side, the slope is decreased to allow for the road. Slope angles of 30° to 60° have been selected to indicate the dependence of stripping volume (V) on slope angle. The stripping at the ends have been calculated assuming representation by cones. The volume associated with the haul road is 2.6 Mm3 (92.8 million cu ft). A comparison of the strip volumes involved is shown in Table 1. As can be seen, the percent savings in strip volume varies from about 4% to 17% and depends greatly on the slope angle. It is perhaps more interesting to examine the savings in stripping costs that could then be used to cover the cost of the access ramp and the crosscuts for stripping costs of $3/m3 ($0.08 per cu ft). The cost with the road volume is 2.6 million x 3 = $7.8 million.

I have been asked by the Society of Mining Engineers to present a paper on Inco Limited's Indonesian nickel project as a case study in the financing of large overseas mining projects. I welcome this opportunity It is a story worth telling not only because the project itself represents a significant human achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. The paper will be divided into four sections: (i) a brief history of the project, (ii) a critical appraisal of the project's financing plan in terms of the goals that we sought to achieve, (iii) some comments on certain factors underlying the relative success of the financing plan, and (iv) the contributions that the engineering staffs must make to a successful financing plan. The paper will not present a technical assessment of the project since Inco Limited has been asked to submit a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of the AIME in February 1979.

Placement of coal combustion byproducts into abandoned sections of underground coal mines for the purpose of subsidence mitigation has been investigated in Illinois. Several handling and transportation systems have been examined. Prototype pneumatic and hydraulic placement systems have been developed and demonstrated. The demonstration site, Peabody No. 10 mine in Pawnee Illinois, is selected as a case study. It is found that, for a project of 5 years, transporting 150,000 tons of byproduct annually from a power plant located 32 km (20 miles) to the mine would cost $1.80 per ton and placement into underground would cost $3.07 per ton.

Colorado has recorded more than 100 years of industrial mineral production. Much of the state's history, culture, and economy is based in mining, but the industrial minerals and construction materials comprising the nonmetallics sector of the industry very often are overlooked or overshadowed by mineral fuels and the metals. Indeed, many of these materials find use in seemingly unimportant industrial applications essential to our economy and life style and yet are not so recognized by the consumer. Unlike many other mineral resources, the numerous industrial minerals occur in many different and often exotic geologic environments, some of which are characteristic only of the western states. In Colorado only a few of these minerals have continued production through the years; many saw only "boom" periods or other critical times of need, such as the world wars. The changing needs and demands of our society in the 1980s will stimulate yet another era of intensive activity in our industrial minerals storehouse. Researchers are finding new uses and applications for these materials in dealing with the energy crisis and fuel shortages, the need to develop domestic mineral reserves of all kinds, and the goals of reuse and recycling. Some of Colorado's little-used and unused industrial minerals hold extraordinary promise in solving some of these problems on the regional and national levels. In this paper we will look at the history of development of Colorado's more prominent nonmetallics and especially at current research on and future potential of several other commodities among which Colorado contains the largest known reserves.

The New York Trap Rock Corporation has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. The company produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, with a total annual production amounting to 6 million tons. The crushed stone is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey and Long island areas by water transportation. There are daily deliveries of approximately 35 scowloads to the market area. Its customers are contractors with ready-mixed concrete and asphalt plants located on the water, where the aggregate is unloaded for its ultimate use. For a number of years capital equipment was replaced only when the current operating machinery was no longer serviceable, or when' a need was apparent for a different type of equipment. There was no particular regard for efficiency or for operating and maintenance costs. Such lack of system often resulted in the emergency purchase of equipment which was later found to be unsuitable for the job. A few years ago it became apparent that a systematic procedure was necessary. After evaluation of several systems, an individualized plan was evolved from the basic pattern developed by the Machinery and Allied Products Institute. The system adopted by New York Trap Rock has proved wholly satisfactory.

This paper reviews a study conducted for Australian Coal Research Limited (ACARP) to assist Anglo-American operations with better understanding of coal burst mechanics and control based on U.S. practical experience, investigations, and inspections in three major U.S. coalfields over the past 45 years. The study examined both nonviolent and burst-prone case studies to identify contributing risk factors and addressed failure mechanisms for major U.S. coalfields in Utah, Colorado, and Kentucky, which have diverse characteristics. To investigate the mechanics of coal burst, a multipronged approach is used. First, field measurements in three mines from East Mountain, Utah, are complemented with finite-difference stress analyses to address the importance of horizontal stress in coal pillar mechanics of violent failure. Second, the computational procedures for estimating seismicity resulting from slip along geological discontinuities are reviewed, as these measurements point to seismicity being the trigger mechanism for violent failure of marginally stable structures. This joint-slip seismicity mechanism is in agreement with the more recentimproved re-examination of mining-induced seismicity (MIS) data from the Crandall Canyon Mine, Utah by University of Utah (UOU). Third, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology is applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal burst. It utilizes data from 30 case studies including those from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other eastern U.S. mines. The statistical approach reinforces field measurements and points to strata rigidity, joint spacings, and horizontal stress field as significant factors affecting damage resulting from coal bursts. This provides practical capabilities for identifying operations of higher risk using a rigidity-cavability variable. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the mechanics and risk factors associated with coal bursts in major U.S. coalfields. This paper details the extensive underpinning required to hold up the 39th street Bridge while demolishing its massive support piers and building a 30ft deep Cut/ Cover RR tunnel beneath it. The underpinning/SOE support required the construction of 16 large hand dug pits 36ft deep that were reinforced and concrete filled. In addition, an extensive steel support system was tied into the bridge super structure. All of the underpinning/tunnel construction was done while a 110ton crane sat directly atop the heavily trafficked – 66 ft. wide bridge. The tunnel excavation, concrete lining and final bridge pier support work will also be presented. All work was done within 5ft of active mainline tracks and that required tight grouting behind all lagging to eliminate any track settlement.

The chemistry of the element uranium enables industry to employ either an acid or alkaline carbonate leach solution for most uranium ores. Either method my be used for conventional, in-situ, or heap leaching. Uranium recovery in the leaching process depends both on the solubility of the uranium minerals and, on the access of the leach reagent to them. The uranium leaching rate is proportional to the liberated mineral surface area and the chemical reactions involved in the dissolution step. The dissolution of U(VI) and the oxidation of u(IV) to U(VI) are the basic chemical reactions in the leaching process. The active surface area is a function of the effective porosity and the particle size of the ore (1). Ore pieces, with a high porosity and high permeability, may provide a large active surface area even in coarser fractions. This type of ore might be suitable for heap or in-situ leaching techniques. Nonporous and impervious ores are usually more amenable to conventional milling where the active mineral surface is exposed by grinding the ore down to the liberation size of the mineral.
