Experimentation was performed on the flotation of apatite and dolomite separately using anionic collectors in the presence of Mycobacterium phlei. Also, the flotation of mixtures of dolomite and apatite in the presence of anionic collectors and in the absence and presence of the bacterium were studied. It was found that M.phlei functions as a depressant for both minerals. However, it functions as a better depressant for dolomite than for apatite. Experimentation was extended to two different Florida dolomitic phosphate rocks. In this investigation a concentrate grade of less than 1.0% MgO was achieved.

Significant economic benefits can result when rock mechanics is applied within a practical framework and integrated within the other engineering functions of the mine organization. This requires management support and understanding of rock mechanics as a practical tool to help attain high standards of safety, productivity and resource recovery. For such an approach, a long-term geotechnical program is needed in most operations to build an adequate data base and to ensure that design and ground control issues are handled in a cost-effective manner. This paper presents a summary of four case studies where significant economic benefits were realized with the help of rock mechanics. Although cost savings were not computed, the economic benefits are obvious and clearly impacted the mine operations favorably.

Environmental and economic costs related to equipment fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission present a substantial challenge to the mining industry. Haul trucks are an integral part of the overall surface mining system and they consume a significant quantity of fuel. Consequently, they produce a significant amount of CO2. The objective of this research is to (i) establish a mathematical relationship among a truck?s fuel consumption, power and engine load factors and (ii) determine the amount of a truck?s CO2 emission and the associated cost that may arise from potential CO2 legislation. In order to achieve these objectives, the authors have considered original equipment manufacturer (OEM) haul trucks, which are commonly used in surface mining operations. The research presented here may be used by mining professionals to help determine the cost and environmental burden of the trucks? application and efficiently manage energy consumption.

In situ recovery (ISR) of uranium alters the baseline groundwater geochemistry in order to mobilize and complex uranium to extract and concentrate it. ISR wellfield restoration is often challenging, and primarily relies on groundwater sweep, reinjection of treated permeate, and/or injection of reductants. Greater focus should be placed on injection-based approaches (using existing infrastructure) based on established engineering concepts used for in situ remediation of groundwater plumes. Such injection-based approaches could shorten restoration timeframes consequently reducing long-term operational costs. This paper addresses various types of injection-based approaches to wellfield restoration based on in-situ remediation success with other constituents that require similar treatment. This paper describes necessary design practices for injecting reactive chemicals (e.g., reductants or biostimulants), operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies to prevent fouling of the chemical delivery system and well network, and natural constraints to restoration. Best practices for successful biostimulation strategies that minimize residual uranium, radium, oxoanions, and other trace elements are as described. Advantages of such injection-based approaches could include significant reductions in restoration times, and consequently, lower restoration costs.

The word adapt means "to change so that one's behavior will conform to new or changed circumstances." Applying this definition to process controllers suggests that an adaptive controller can change its behavior in response to changes in the dynamics and disturbances of the process. In the minerals industry there are many control cases where adaptive control will provide superior control as compared with more traditional PID (proportional, integral, derivative) control. A typical plant uses as many as 100 to 200 control loops for lprocess regulation. Therefore, the task of initially tuning and then periodically retuning these controllers is a formidable problem, During the time the controllers are "un-tuned", product quality may deteriorate and unstable operations may result. Adaptive controllers are capable of tuning themselves, thus avoiding this problem. The computers commonly used in distributed control systems are easily capable of implementing adaptive controllers. In addition to the possibility of using the control computer to implement adaptive controllers, many distributed control systems will offer adaptive control as a standard feature in the near future.

Pyrite, a mineral associated with uranium ore, is closely related to uranium leaching. In this study, Ozone micro-nano bubbles (OMNBs), as an environmentally friendly advanced oxidation technology, were used for the first time to oxidize pyrite under experimental conditions to improve the leaching rate of uranium. A laboratory-scale agitation leaching experiment of pyrite was carried out with a pH of 1.0–3.0, gas flow of 1–3 L/min, ozone generation rate of 0.55–2.22 mg/s, and pyrite concentration of 0.1–5.0 g/L for 1 h. By adding three different co-oxidant: Mn(II), Mn(IV), and Fe(III), it was found that only Mn(IV) increased the oxidation rate of pyrite by 21.7%. The results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that the formation of Fe(III)-O film on the surface of the ore suppresses the oxidation rate of pyrite to a certain extent. Pyrite can be rapidly oxidized up to 57.6% by OMNBs, which is beneficial to uranium leaching. This method is expected to be used for in situ acid leaching of uranium with OMNBs injected into the ground.

"One of the most common emissions from detonating explosives are nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are potentially deadly if inhaled. Lab studies estimate emission quantities, though great variation is shown based on site-specific conditions, and lab tests may not fully represent field results. Field VALUES (have not been measured due to the vast area affected. OSMRE recently promised to release a ruling regarding surface mine NOx production. Once the ruling is implemented, it may eventually be necessary to monitor site-specific NOx production from blasting. A small unmanned aerial vehicle system (sUAS) is able to carry a NOx gas monitor, rapidly travel to the blast location, and to follow resulting clouds of dust and emission gasses. This project will perform laboratory tests to expand on current estimations, determine an optimal method for collecting data, and evaluate the ability for this unique application of sUAS to assist in health risk assessment for mine employees and nearby communities. Additionally, large initial NOx concentrations do not necessarily correlate to unsafe conditions, and this project will be ground breaking in observance of surface blasting emission dispersion. The project is still in early phases at the time of submission for this paper (Nov 1, 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on summarizing background research related to the project and a description of the project plan. INTRODUCTION Nitrogen oxide gases (NOx) are common emission by products of surface mine blasting. These gases can potentially cause risk to human health and safety, both for mine workers and communities near the blast site. However, these emission quantities are largely unmeasured and no attempts have been made to relate these VALUES (to human health risk. The primary objectives of this project are to determine actual quantities of emission gases produced during surface blasting, to evaluate immediate and long-term risks to nearby people, communities, and ecosystems, to develop a system for mine employees to easily monitor emission and risk levels, and then provide guidelines for mitigating health risks based on a location’s emission results. BACKGROUND Current research regarding health risk produced by surface mine blasting NOx emissions is extremely lacking. Estimations have been made based on laboratory research, though these same test results show wide ranges of possible gas quantities produced based on site-specific conditions. Even if these estimations are accurate, no method has been created to relate gas quantity produced to human exposure concentrations. "The development of a multiple level underground mine is a complex task in which geology, engineering, ground control, and unit operations are integrated into a single mine design. The components are inter-dependent and must function cohesively to ensure a profitable underground mining operation. To optimize reserve recovery, mine planning should begin from the lowest level and progress up. This limits any misjudgments or oversights of a given level affecting the underlying levels and ensures the ability to maximize recovery from each level.Mine planning should start with the exploration and characterization of the geologic setting. Once the reserve geology and quality is well understood, then mine planning can begin with respect to the following:,Orientation of mine works with respect to horizontal stress,,Access to the reserve,,Determination of opening widths,,Selection of back, floor horizons and pillar centers,,Selection of development and secondary mining heights,,Appropriate interburden thicknesses, and,Examine the stability of the multiple level mine through numer¬ical modeling.The multiple level mine design process and decisions are presented through a case history example. The theme is that there is one opportunity to “get it right” as well as many chances to overlook a small aspect within the design that will plague the mine throughout all levels and through the entirety of its operating life.INTRODUCTIONAs surface quarries reach their economic stripping limit and encroach on mineral and/or reserve boundaries, they approach the end of surface mineable reserves. Furthermore, modern urban sprawl has placed previously remote surface quarries within suburban development and neighborhoods, leading to significant increases in noise, dust, and vibration grievances by the community and regulators (Newman, 2017). Many mining operations have begun year-round production of underground reserves to meet growing market demands. This does not permit the typical sequence of stripping overburden in the winter to provide limestone to mine during the construction season. Underground stone mining operations in the United States commonly utilize a room-and-pillar mine layout with drill-and-blast production methodology for the development of the reserve. Within the Midwest and Eastern regions, thick and flat-lying limestone formations lend themselves to the utilization of multiple level mining layouts. While a multiple level mine plan will increase the overall recovery of the reserve, greater overburden depths, multiple level geometry, and the presence of discontinuities all require an emphasis on ground control for the planning and development of a safe and productive multiple level underground stone operation."

n the U.S., lead has been produced via blast furnace processing for over a century, and the slags from that pyro-metallurgical process have been accumulating on industrial sites over that extended period. Lead blast furnace slags typically contain both lead and zinc compounds in an iron-silicate matrix, and it appears highly likely that such materials will have to be processed in the near future to meet with EPA regulations. Thus it is appropriate to investigate possible processing routes to render the slags non-hazardous and simultaneously to recover metal values to partially off-set the inherent high cost of processing such materials. There are two major processing alternatives: one being pyrometallurgical and the other hydrometallurgical. The research reported here investigates leaching/solution purification/recovery processes for lead and presents experimental data for the treatment of lead blast furnace slags from S.E. Missouri. The results of the research suggest that both lead and zinc can be removed effectively from the slag, and that metallic lead can be recovered directly from the organic extractant utilized for solution purification.

The objective of this paper is to review advances in the art of borehole (slurry) mining made by the Bureau of Mines. The introduction gives historical and general background information on borehole mining. The borehole mining concept is defined and justified in terms of economics, health and safety, the environment, and resource conservation. This is followed by a description of the design of a prototype borehole mining tool (BMT) developed by the Bureau of Mines. Included are design drawings and performance specifications. The next section describes the application of the BMT in the extraction of metallurgical coal from steeply pitching seams near Wilkeson, Wash., during 1975-76. The field test showed that the BMT produced coal at the rate of 8 tons per hour (tph) (7,272 kg/hr) from a depth of 88 feet (26.8 m) and was effective in producing coal as far as 15 feet (4.6 m) from the center of the borehole. The data are used as a basis for an economic analysis of borehole coal mining and for the suggestions for the design of a second-generation borehole coal mining tool. The following section describes Bureau efforts in applying borehole mining to the extraction of uraniferous sandstone at Rocky Mountain Energy Corp.'s Nine-Mile Lake site, Natrona County, Wyo. BMT design changes appropriate to uranium mining are described along with production, reliability, and reclamation data taken during 1977-73. The field test revealed that the BMT produced 900 tons (81.8x105 g) of uraniferous sand at an average race of 8 tph (7,272 kg/hr) from a depth of 75 (22.8 m) to 90 (27.4 m) feet and created a cavity 25 feet (7.6 m) in radius. These data are used as the basis for an economic analysis of borehole mining of shallow uraniferous sandstones. Reclamation data included will be the results of backfilling experiments conducted at Nine-Mile Lake during 1978. The most significant of these data were that backfill was emplaced at the rate of 16 tph (14.5x103 kg/hr) and that 90 percent of the material extracted from a cavity can be backfilled.

The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. Ball Clay -- Four companies - H.C. Spinks Clay Co. Inc. (owned by Lhoist Group), Imerys Group (formerly Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co.), Old Hickory Clay Co. and Unimin Corp. - mined ball clay in four states during 2010. Production, based on preliminary data, was 910 kt (1.11 million st) with an estimated value of $42.9 million. That was a 10-percent increase in tonnage from 831 kt (916 million st) with a value of $37.7 million that was produced in 2009. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of domestic production. It was followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 70 percent of production was airfloat, 20 percent was crude and 10 percent was water-slurried.

Large-scale coal mining will cause environmental problems such as aquifer damage, land excavation and occupation, soil erosion, vegetation damage, and regional landscape damage. The existing coal mine environmental restoration technology is relatively simple, and there is a lack of systematic research on environmental total factors. Based on the mechanism of coal mining damage and the laws of environmental natural succession, the concept of “coal environmental protection mining” is proposed, which combines damage reduction mining and environmental element system restoration. In accordance with the environmental protection principle of “source protection, process damage reduction, and systematic restoration,” a technical system of “coal environmental protection mining” is constructed for the two types of mining damage scenarios: underground mining and open-pit mining. In view of the damage characteristics of underground mining, source environmental protection technology based on optimization of mining process parameters, stability maintenance and damage reduction technology for overlying rock bearing arch shell structure, zoning and time-sharing treatment of surface cracks, and direct drainage irrigation technology for mine water have developed. In accordance with the damage characteristics caused by open-pit mining, land-saving and source reduction damage technology, near-natural stratigraphic reconstruction, topsoil improvement, and environmental storage and utilization technologies for seasonal precipitation have developed. By applying the technology in this paper, the maximum surface settlement value of 12401 working face in Shangwan coal mine was relatively reduced by 25%, the surface cracks have been adjusted from step-type cracks to dynamic small cracks, and since the technical implementation of the Shendong mining area in 2010, the vegetation coverage has increased loss and crushing decreased by 0.06 km2 every year, the environmental restoration period of the dump site was advanced by more than one year, and the vegetation coverage rate increased by 41.78% compared with the background value in the semi-arid area of the victory open-pit coal mine demonstration area. A surface reservoir with a water storage capacity of 400,000 cubic meters has been built, and the seasonal and graded utilization of mine water has been realized. An underground reservoir with a water storage capacity of 1.22 million square meters has been built in the Baorixiler open-pit coal mine.

Iron transfer from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to the electrolyte can have a major economic impact on solvent extraction (SX) operations. High iron transfer will lead to greater operational costs, due to increased reagent consumption through electrolyte bleed and make up, or increased power costs due to decreased electrowinning current efficiency. Bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfide ore from the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine was investigated in a large scale piloting program including SX and electrowinning. Plant data and lab test work conducted throughout the course of operation, show that the unique containing PLS high ferric iron with high pH can lead to lower Cu: Fe selectivity than is typically seen in traditional copper SX operations. The impact of high ferric iron on the plant operation, and methods to reduce iron transfer will be discussed. Special considerations need to be taken for plant operating conditions and selection of SX reagents (including both extractant and aromatic content of diluent) based on the feed PLS characteristics.

"In 2004 works started for the now completed seven-level automated car park accommodating 480 parking spaces inside the pre-existent “Morelli cave”, located in a strategic area in Naples. Since 470 BC Greeks initiated the growth of the fascinating world of the underground Naples, of which this cave belongs. It seems that once here the god Mithras was worshiped. It’s also became a quarry for tuff extraction and in 1600s it became an aqueduct serving the area. In 1853 the Bourbon Tunnel, a project commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon to allow easy escape from the Royal Palace in case of riots, was connected to this network of tunnels. The cavern became an air raid shelter during the Second World War, then a deposit of cars and motorcycles in the '50s and' 60s, a disposal area and it has been abandoned in the last 40 years before it’s new utilization. INTRODUCTION Over time, the overcrowding and congestion of major cities’ historic centres has led to seeking spaces underground that can accommodate activities and car parks, as in the case of the Morelli cavity, site of the future car park by that name. Before describing its characteristics, design solutions, and executive problems, it is necessary to introduce the site historically into the broader landscape of the cavities present below ground in the municipality of Naples. The province of Naples, which includes the area of the Municipality of Naples, has a large number of cavities. The existence of “Naples underground” is connected with the morphological and geological conformation of its territory, consisting of tuff stone which has entirely special features of lightness, brittleness, and stability. The first transformations in the territory’s morphology, taking place thanks to the Greeks starting from 470 BC, initiated the growth of the fascinating world of Naples underground. These transformations were dictated by water provision requirements, which led to the creation of underground cisterns to collect rainwater, and by the need to recover construction material to erect the buildings of Neapolis. In subsequent centuries, the city’s expansion led to the construction of a proper aqueduct, which allowed drinking water to be collected and distributed thanks to a series of cisterns linked to a dense network of tunnels. During Roman rule, the existing aqueduct was expanded and perfected, but with the rise of the Angevins in 1266, the city saw great urban expansion, which obviously corresponded with increased extraction of tuff from the subsoil to construct new buildings. This confirmed a particular feature of Naples: that of having been generated from its own innards, with buildings rising directly above the quarry that provided their building material."

The Cable belt Company has been building single flight conveyors for a number of years. The simple design concepts of this type conveyor, introduced over thirty years ago, when distances of one to two miles were considered major advances in technology, remain relatively unchanged. Conveyors that are 6 to 20 miles (9.0 to 32 kilometers) long are being built and are presently in operation through- out the free world. The Cable Belt conveyor is not conventional in its construction. Cable welt differs from conventional troughed idler conveyors in that the driving medium and carrying medium are separated. Motion is provided by two endless steel cables running the length of the conveyor. The cables are driven by a single drive unit incorporating a differential gear which insures identical cable linear speeds and equal tension in both cables at all times. The belting is located and supported by "V" shaped shoeforms moulded to the belt which form a wedging action. The friction between the belting and rope is sufficient to prevent slippage (See figure 01).

"Field observations on replacements of 12-inch constant cross-section double disc cutters in Tuzla Wastewater Tunnel excavated by an EPB TBM with 3.151 mm excavation diameter excavating hard rock are summarized. Cutter life is correlated to rock’s uniaxial compressive strength and Cerchar abrasivity index, and TBM operational parameters. Number of cutter replacements, average cutter replacement rates and types of cutter damages are summarized. The relationships between cutter life and rock properties and TBM operational parameters are analyzed by single variable regression method. Detailed analysis between chainages 1+200 and 1+982 km indicates that average cutter consumption rate is 35.7 m3/replacement (4.6 m/replacement). Cerchar abrasivity index and uniaxial compressive strength does not indicate any meaningful relationship with cutter life. Penetration per revolution and field specific energy might be used for predicting lives of constant cross-section double disc cutters. However, additional data is required to generalize the findings of this study. INTRODUCTION Cutter life / replacement and/or consumption rates in terms of cutter cost and replacement time loses is one of the most important parameters affecting excavation performance of mechanical excavators, especially of TBMs used very widely and equipped with usually disc cutters. Predicting cutter cost is a very important task in especially feasibility stage of tunneling projects. Basic parameters affecting cutter life can be classified into 3 general groups as geological and geotechnical, excavation machine (TBM) related, and operational parameters (Bilgin et al., 2013). The geological and geotechnical parameters are the most dominant ones among them. The machine related parameters should be arranged in accordance with the expected geological and geotechnical conditions for the best TBM excavation performance and minimum cost."

Adverse ground behavior events, such as convergence and ground falls, pose critical risks to underground mine safety and productivity. Today, monitoring of such failures is primarily conducted using legacy techniques with low spatial and temporal resolution while exposing workers to hazardous environments. This study assesses the potential of novel simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)-based light detection and ranging (Lidar) data quality for rapid, digital, and eventually autonomous mine-wide underground geotechnical monitoring. We derive a comprehensive suite of quality metrics based on tests in two underground mines for two state-of-the-art mobile laser scanning (MLS) systems. Our results provide evidence that SLAM-based MLS provides data of the quality required to detect geotechnically relevant changes while being significantly more efficient for large mine layouts when compared to traditional static systems. Additionally, we show that SLAM-specific processing can achieve an order of magnitude better relative accuracy relevant for change detection than quality metrics derived from traditionally deployed tests would suggest while reducing SLAM drift error by up to 90%. In collaboration with an operating block cave mine, we confirm these capabilities in field tests on a mine-wide scale and, for the first time, demonstrate methods of rockfall detection using MLS data. While more work is required to investigate optimal collection, processing, and utilization of MLS data, we demonstrate its potential to become an effective and widely applicable data source for rapid, accurate, and comprehensive geotechnical inspections.

In early 1970, General Mills Chemicals, Inc. announced the availability of en improved liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX® 64N, for the recovery of copper from various solutions, such as dump leach liquors. LIX 64N has been shown to be a considerable advance over LIX 64, and is presently in use in three commercial plants. Results have been very gratifying. For example, one of the plants was designed for operational production of 40,000 pounds copper per day, and in fact reached this output within the third week following startup of the plant. In addition to the operating plants, another is scheduled to come on stream this month with L D( 64N being used to extract and recover both copper and nickel. The chemical properties and operating characteristics of this reagent have been fully described in a previous paper. 1 LIX 64N is quite an effective and selective extractint for copper, even with copper contents as high as 15 g/l, but the reagent is somewhat limited in pH range, and loses some of its extraction efficiency as the pH drops below 0.8. Liquors derived from vat leaching, electrolytic tankhouae bleed streams, or some of the new leach schemes derived to solubilize copper from sulfide concentrates are examples of the liquors that present major problems when treated via liquid ion exchange. LIX 64N could extract some of the copper from such streams, but recovery was limited to about 75 percent. Also, in some parts of the world there are streams which are relatively low in copper (-5 g/l) but which are very high in acid (25-50 g/1 H2SO4). Again, LIX 64N can attain only about 75 percent recovery from such streams. In situ mining is emerging as a potential alternative to conventional surf ace and underground mining techniques. A major factor in determining recoveries by in situ mining is the proportion of ore minerals that can be contacted and solubilized by the leach solutions. To provide basic information on the processes occurring during in situ leaching, particularly at the microscopic scale, the Bureau of Mines has developed a geologic characterization research program. This includes laboratory experiments using leaching apparatus that can accommodate whole core samples. Whole core experiments result in higher leach solution-ore mineral contact ratios than packed column experiments, and also allow for the assessment of permeability changes taking place as the result of mineral dissolution, precipitation, and clay swelling within the flow channels in the rock. A nonreactive, reusable reaction cell has been designed and tested. The leaching apparatus can be used for constant-pressure or constant-flow experiments and allows for the control of flow rate, pressure, and temperature during the experiments, thus permitting studies on a wide variety of ore samples. Details of the experimental apparatus and design are presented, as well as preliminary results from the first series of experiments on an oxide copper ore from the Casa Grande, AZ, area.
