The flotation of calcite has been studied by many investigators, especially in terms of type of collector; pH; and metal ions that activate and, more importantly, depress the flotation of calcite (1)(2). Research was extended to the investigation of the effect of polyvalent metal salts and sodium silicate using these materials added separately or in mixtures (3)(4)(5)(6). Flotation of calcite was also studied with respect to its function as a carrier in the beneficiation of kaolin clays by Ultraflotation (7) (8) (9). The carrier used in Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation's industrial Ultraflotation operation is calcite. This fact, coupled with the continuing interest in Ultraflotation phenomena, led to a study to determine the effect of polyvalent metal-silicate hydrosols on the flotation of calcite.

An improved experimental procedure to measure contact angle has been consolidated with coal surface preparation involving polishing with abrasive paper, alumina powder, and a cloth, followed by ultrasonic and mechanical cleaning. Specifically, the captive-bubble measuring technique has been compared with the sessile-drop technique and the former has been recommended for the examination of the hydrophobic properties of coal surfaces. Results of the research program, which is currently under way, on the examination of the effect of the nature, amount, size and distribution of mineral inclusions in coal on its wettability are briefly reviewed.

Water and wind erosion of toxic zinc and lead smelter waste is one of the most urgent environmental problems to be solved in the Silesia region of Poland. Over 87 x 106 Mg of various mining wastes were disposed of in uncontrolled piles leading to soil, water, and air pollution in highly populated areas. Welz and Doerschel process Pb/Zn smelter wastes were stabilized in the summer of 1994 by application of heavy loads of CaCO3 (30 Mg/ha), CaO (1.5 -15 Mg/ha), and municipal biosolids (150 -300 Mg/ha), followed by seeding with a mixture of acid-and salt-tolerant grass species selected in a pot experiment. Vegetation was successfully established on 85% of the Welz material demonstration plot area (0.5 ha), even though it was initially high in water-soluble Zn, Pb, and Cd ranging from 0.4 to 1311,0.1 to 5.8, and 0.05 to 55 mg/kg, respectively. Standing biomass averaged 3.3 Mg/ha on the stabilized Welz waste zone by the end of the third growing season (1997). The revegetation of much of the Doerschel material area failed initially because of extremely high salinity (16 dS m-1), high content of water soluble metals (Cd in particular), and heavy compaction. The area was capped (15 cm) with waste lime and retreated with bio-solids (300 Mg/ha) in 1995, and standing biomass averaged 2.9 Mg/ha in the fall of 1997. The observed plant response to bio-solids and lime indicates this approach to be an environmentally beneficial technology as compared to the traditional methods utilizing topsoil covers.

The abstract highlights the challenges in concentrating complex and non-sulfide lead-zinc ores and emphasizes the importance of froth flotation for their beneficiation. The study focuses on using process mineralogy to understand the flotation behavior of these ores from the Görgü region. The ore samples were characterized using various techniques, revealing oxidation and carbonation of primary minerals. The flotation results were interpreted in light of the mineralogical data, explaining the poor outcomes due to the complex nature of the ore, poor liberation, and lack of hydrophobicity.

The paper describes the new design criteria and control strategies for multi-density dense medium separation (DMS) circuits. The role of the multi-density separation is discussed, and it is emphasized that for many processing problems -related to minerals and coals -it may be very important to perform two or more cuts at different densities in order to obtain a remarkable improvement in quality of products, process efficiency and economy. The two-density separation by dense medium cyclones was generally performed using two dense medium plants in sequence. In contrast to the former technology, the multi-density separation can now be performed by using a single medium circuit composed of different interconnected medium sumps. The sumps, one for each density, are fed with different medium streams selected according to their density, size composition and content in non-magnetic contaminant in such a way that the rheological properties of the media are optimized. This new technology is based on dynamic systems to density the medium, on the size-density segregation of the medium in the cyclones and separating devices and on accurate control systems for the density, viscosity and stability of the dense media of the different sumps. The present paper reports on the theoretical basis for the new, advanced medium circuits and on the systems for the control of the densities and of the rheological properties of the dense media. A typical circuit for a two-density separation is also described, and some industrial applications reported and discussed.

This paper summarizes the geomechanics programs conducted in two hard rock underground mining operations in the Western United States, between 1966 and 1981. The two projects were directed towards understanding the behavior of the rock masses, at the scale of the caverns. To this end, the emphasis was put on large scale field measurements, complemented by limited laboratory testing. The results of these observations were used to build realistic finite element models of the underground chambers. In the marble mine, at Crestmore, California, the models were applied to the structural optimization of the room-and-pillar pattern. In the granite mining, at Climax, Nevada Test Site, the models explained some unusual stress changes observed during excavation. Based on the large number of geomechanical techniques employed, specific conclusions and recommendations are offered regarding the quality, applicability, and usefulness of the various methods. The two case histories clearly indicate chat numerical models are extremely useful for a detailed understanding of the structural behavior of mine openings. To be realistic, these models must be based first and foremost on large scale field observations. The lessons Learned on these two projects also are directly applicable to the design and analysis of nuclear waste repositories in hard rocks such as basalt, granite, and welded tuff.

According to the Markowitz portfolio theory the value of a diversified portfolio is higher than the sum of the parts of a portfolio, which is an important consideration for the correct valuation. This is valid for real estate portfolios as well as for mining assets (or enterprises). This paper analyses the application of the portfolio theory to a diversified portfolio of assets in the real estate industry and draws conclusions on further research work to be done in the minerals industry. The volume of real estate transactions is increasing over recent years. As such, the nature of those transactions is constantly changing and in some cases portfolios become more heterogeneous as they are composed of different property categories, e.g. locations and types of use. This makes their economic evaluation more difficult. This paper focuses on the acquisition of a fairly heterogeneous real estate property portfolio purchased by “Commerz Real” in Germany in Q4 2019. For economic evaluation the widely used Markowitz portfolio theory (Markowitz, 1952) was applied. It was investigated whether diversification effects could achieve added value in the form of a reduction in risk compared to the sum of their individual components. As a result the findings of this research could be applied to other heterogeneous real estate transactions and even to mine property portfolio or PPP1 project portfolio transactions.

Electromagnetic emissions from electrical devices may interfere with electronic safety systems or other devices in the mining environment. This electromagnetic interference (EMI) may cause unwanted changes in the performance of the affected devices and may cause safety issues for miners. To minimize the risk of EMI, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research quantifying the electromagnetic emissions of several types of equipment that might be used in the mining environment. Previous research has shown that welding arcs can give off ultraviolet (UV) emissions, visible light, and infrared (IR) emissions that can cause health problem on skin and eyes. In this study, the electromagnetic emissions of the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process were monitored and measured. Several factors including operating mode (AC, DC positive or DC+, DC negative or DC-), current setting (low, medium, high, maximum), and electrode type were investigated to compare their effect on emission level. The test shows that the emission level from the welding process can be affected by those factors. The test data also shows that, among those factors, the operating mode has more influence on emission level than do current setting and electrode type. The information in this paper can be useful for the mining industry to better understand the emission in the 9-kHz to 500-MHz frequency range from a SMAW welder.

The mechanisms involved in the adsorption of modified thiol-type collectors on sulfide minerals have been investigated in the present work. These collectors belong to the broad classes of thionocarbamates, thioureas, thiophosphates and thiophosphinates. They differ significantly from the traditionally used thiol-type collectors, such as xanthates and dithiophosphates, in terms of structural features that involve either the introduction of an additional oxygen donor or the alteration of electron densities on donor atoms. Electrochemical studies suggest that the adsorption of these classes of collectors is probably the result of a coupled reaction of the EC-type, involving an initial electron transfer step (E), followed immediately by a chemical reaction (C). Thus, the overall adsorption process is controlled by both the E, and pK of the system. The role of structural features in changing the interaction of the donor atoms with sulfide minerals is also discussed.

"Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out. That’s why we have conducted a worldwide search to find globally proven solutions that will improve our network productivity and efficiency,” Fullerton said.The Movement Planner solution considers multiple factors including train schedules, trafficcontrol systems and train movements relative to each other and then develops an optimized traffic plan for the trains throughout the network. The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet the long-term needs of a growing population. The tunnel will be 1,100 m long and 6.5 m in diameter (3,610 LF × 21.3 ft), constructed under Burrard Inlet between North Vancouver and Burnaby in British Columbia. It will be excavated through mixed ground conditions under high groundwater pressure, using a slurry TBM, between a 72 m (236 ft) deep shaft in soil and a 110 m (361 ft) deep shaft in rock. The completed tunnel will accommodate three large-diameter water mains that will be installed as part of the tunnel contract. This paper presents the project from design and contractor procurement, into the current construction stage describing some of the unique challenges encountered during the project development to date.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. Coal mining companies in Australia are managing the high-consequence risks across their operations more effectively by using an interactive online risk management system known as Riskgate Developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland, Australia, Riskgate contains detailed information about 11 high-consequence risk areas (called topics in the system) for opencut and underground coal mines (Table 1). The existing topics are: fires; strata control for underground mining; ground control for opencut mining; tires; isolation; collisions; explosions and explosives; manual tasks; and trips, slips and falls. Every Riskgate topic is focused on coal industry activities (mining, processing, transport and storage). The scope includes mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure (mobile, fixed plant, field equipment, buildings, road and rail transport), and all aspects of the mine life cycle from design through to decommissioning. The topics uniformly recognize that a loss of control can result in injury or fatality, equipment damage, production loss, reputation loss and environmental damage. However, the priority focus for Riskgate is the safety of mine personnel.

In June 2022, Louisville MSD completed a 6.5 km (4-mile), 6.1 m (20-foot) finisheddiameter CSO conveyance and storage tunnel system located along the Ohio River in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. During construction, the Ohio River Tunnel alignment was expanded 2.4 km (1.5 miles) into areas where natural gas was detected. Without delaying construction, the project team developed and implemented a natural gas risk mitigation strategy to safely excavate the tunnel via TBM and install concrete lining. The risk mitigation strategy included the installation of gas-vent borings, increased tunnel ventilation, retrofitting tunneling equipment for “gassy” operations, and modifying the project specific HASP.

Pyrite is one of the most common sulfide minerals on earth, which is usually grown with chalcopyrite and other sulfide minerals. In flotation practice, pyrite from different mines or different sections in a same mine may have different flotation behaviors. This is because the pyrite crystal contains lattice defect, including ionic vacancy and lattice impurity. The present work investigates the effects of three typical 3d transition metal (Co, Ni, and Fe) on the adsorption of CH3OCS2 −, OH−, and CN− on pyrite surface by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Calculated results show that Co impurity reduces the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite, while Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite. Co impurity has small influence on the adsorption of OH−, but Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies. Calculations on Mulliken charge population of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ indicate that the Mulliken charges of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ after OH− adsorption are more than those after CN− adsorption. This suggests that the ionic property of the M-OH- coordination bond is greater than that of M-CN- coordination bond, while covalent bonding of M-CN- coordination bond is greater than that of M-OH- coordination bond. The adsorption results are discussed based on coordination field theory (CFT).

"Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole," (Baxter and Parks, 1939)."An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence, the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence."The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling."Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive." (McKinstry, et al., 1948).In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not only on the number of samples but also on their proper distribution throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. The need to provide better mine roof support and control in longwall tailgate entries prompted the Bureau of mines to search for a replacement product for wood cribs. Their search isolated steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFC) as the most effective replacement. Through successful laboratory and underground mine tests, handmade SFC cribs proved to be a viable and more effective roof support system. However, to ensure wider usage, U. S. Steel Mining Co. initiated a joint development and evaluation program with Burrell Construction Company in order to mass produce SFC blocks of reasonable dimension, weight, and cost. Small specimens and full-size cribs were evaluated during this program to determine their compressive strength and post failure characteristics. After considerable testing and adjusting of various concrete mixtures, a final formulation for the SFC crib blocks was selected. That formulation permitted the construction of SFC cribs possessing a nominal crib strength of 3200 psi (22.1 x 106 Pa) and a nominal modulus of elasticity of 1.0 x 106 psi (6894.76 x 106 Pa). These SFC cribs can support from 3.5 to 14.5 times as much load as a wood crib, depending on the size of the wood crib being replaced. Both laboratory and limited mine tests, conducted by U. S. Steel Mining Co. have shown the SFC crib to be an economical and effective means of roof control.

Although researchers have struggled to replicate Heinrich’s safety triangle findings (Heinrich 1931) for various reasons (e.g., no access to his original database and it is unclear if the database was of a single establishment/operation or for an entire industry), the occupational safety community has continued to adopt and expand the applications of this theory (e.g., McSween 2003). Within the mining industry, the potential exists for operations and companies to use concepts from the safety triangle as a way to inform or challenge the practices employed within their health and safety management systems (HSMS) to prevent incidents (Backlund 2016). This paper considers data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s databases and demonstrates the validity of applying the safety triangle theory at the mine level. The results support the use of this theory and demonstrate that lower severity incidents can predict fatalities in a subsequent year where significant nuances and caveats to applying the theory are identified and discussed.

In underground continuous mining operations, ventilation, water sprays and machine-mounted flooded-bed scrubbers are the primary means of controlling respirable dust exposures at the working face. Changes in mining arrangements — such as face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation and equipment operator positioning — can have impacts on the ability of dust controls to reduce occupational respirable dust exposures. This study reports and analyzes dust concentrations measured by the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division for remotecontrolled continuous mining machine operators as well as haulage operators at 10 U.S. underground mines. The results of these respirable dust surveys show that continuous miner exposures varied little with depth of cut but are significantly higher with exhaust ventilation. Haulage operators experienced elevated concentrations with blowing face ventilation. Elevated dust concentrations were observed for both continuous miner operators and haulage operators when working in crosscuts driven into or counter to the section airflow. Individual cuts are highlighted to demonstrate instances of minimal and excessive dust exposures attributable to particular mining configurations. These findings form the basis for recommendations for lowering face worker respirable dust exposures.

Gas outbursts occur as sudden eruptions of gas and minerals from the face of a mine heading as the heading approaches potentially burst-prone (or anomalous) zones of rock. Such outbursts have resulted in considerable damage to equipment and in some cases lives have been lost. Characterizing these anomalous zones and detecting their presence is therefore vital to safe mining. Certain significant characteristics associated with the outburst-prone zones are: (1) the presence of fluid inclusions, (2) unstable stress conditions, (3) characteristic geologic structures, (4) certain physical properties of the rock, and (5) micro-seismic activity. Geophysical and engineering methods for detecting these characterisitcs are discussed and are considered with respect to their past success and future potential for predicting gas outbursts.
