The Ohio River Tunnel Project encountered multiple unexpected geotechnical challenges such as crown and invert instability due to the overstress condition affecting the strata above, below, and in the tunnel alignment during and after TBM excavation along with the potential for methane inflow. This paper showcases how the orientation of a tunnel alignment has a significant impact on how in-situ geological stress can impact the excavation of a tunnel from the contractor’s point of view and how geological features influence gas inflow to the alignment over time.

When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

Much concern has been expressed recently as to whether water supplies will be sufficient to support accelerated energy development foreseen in operation Independence. Taking the Nation as a whole, sufficient water is available for energy growth, but locally, as in arid parts of the Colorado Basin, limited water supplies will dictate economies in water use and affect plant siting. As Young and Thompson1 point out with respect to electric power generation, the term "water requirements" is misleading, as demand for water for cooling is sensitive to price of water and thus is quite flexible rather than the inflexible or fixed level implied by the word "requirement." Much the same is true of other energy conversion systems. Water is used in many aspects of energy production including mining and reclamation of mined lands, on-site processing, transportation, refining, and conversion to other forms of energy. In the East, South, Midwest, and along the seacoasts, water supplies are generally adequate for energy industries; most water problems in those regions relate to pollution rather than supply. West of about the 100th meridian, however, runoff is generally less than potential diversions and energy industries must compete with alternative uses for the limited available water supplies. Water is especially short in areas of less than 10 inches mean annual rainfall where natural precipitation generally is insufficient for establishing vegetation without irrigation. Extraction. The principal categories of extraction comprise coal mining, oil and gas production, uranium mining, and oil shale mining.

If it had not been for the almost unbelievable adventures that came before and after, the last ten months of 19 15 would have been exciting enough for anyone. As it was they were a cheerful interlude. I spent most of the time on our Warren operations catching up on a lot of underground work and visiting Ajo every few weeks to see if my Chuquicamata visit might help solve the New Cornelia problem. While the difficulties were finally solved, at times they seemed almost hopeless. About all I could do to help was to make sure that the ore sent to the pilot plants represented the average ore that must be treated in the final 5000 tpd mill. Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway worked tirelessly with the best consulting advice they could obtain. Credit for the final success was due chiefly to their efforts. Since our old group had given up its "Merry Widow" home in Warren, a few of us got rooms in the company-built Cole Building over the Warren grocery store. This included Jim Lewis, Roy Mitchell, Steve Landon, Paul Stevens, and Hubert d'Autremont who came from Duluth to join our legal staff. Later we rented a small house two blocks from the Calumet and Arizona office. With the now flourishing country club only a 10-min walk away, and an electric car running to it every half hour or so, we were able to give parties in return for the hospitality of our friends. One of the most pleasant episodes came by luck a few days after I got back from Chile. Chester Congdon, a leading director in Calumet and Arizona, with his wife and their daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, spent a couple of days at the Greenway house before making an auto- mobile trip across the desert from Tucson to Ajo. At the same time I arranged to examine the small but rich Bush and Baxter copper mine a few miles from Tucson. Bulkspray cooling has been economically applied in cooling the hot environment of South African gold mines for the past two decades. Its success in that country led to its introduction at Gulf Mineral Resources Co.'s Mt. Taylor Mine in 1981 when increased drifting imposed additional cooling requirements. The bulkspray cooler developed and used at Mt. Taylor has a heat transfer capability of about 500 to 1500 kW. It is compact and portable, designed to be moved as required to maintain working temperatures in the advancing drift faces.

The St Lawrence Seaway, a deep-water canal system between Montreal and Lake Ontario, was opened for navigation on April 25, 1959. Prior to the opening of the new Seaway, small boats known as canalers and a few deep-sea carriers, primarily from Norway since World War II, were the only ships able to journey past Montreal into Lake Ontario through the old Canadian St. Lawrence canal system. Thus it was necessary for many tons of bulk and general cargo to be shipped all-rail to and from Atlantic ports or to be transhipped to and from canalers. With the opening of the new Seaway, large Great Lakes bulk carriers and a much larger percentage of the world's shipping fleet are now able to sail directly from the sea to the heart of industrial North America. In this paper, the historical events leading up to the construction of the Seaway and the physical nature of the Great Lakes transportation system are briefly reviewed. Following this, an attempt is made to evaluate the effects of the new Seaway on Canada's mineral industry. Because the Seaway has been in operation for only one season, this paper must be considered only an interim report. Because of the importance of the Seaway to iron ore, this commodity will be dealt with in detail, although the effect on other mineral commodities such as coal, petroleum, nonferrous ores, iron and steel will be mentioned. The demand for sustainable and profitable/efficient projects within the tunneling and other underground engineering sectors grows rapidly. Construction tasks play a key role within the project conduction, whether as primary (tunneling), secondary (e.g., mine securing) or tertiary processes (e.g., workshops). The construction tasks of primary processes create the main structures, such as tunnels, which resemble the main project goal. For the secondary and tertiary processes, the purpose of the task shifts. The main goal is to provide structures, such as the securing of the cavity and workshops, that enable the project and enhance the efficiency of the primary conduction underground. To plan and optimize the conduction of construction tasks underground, whether they are identified as primary, secondary or tertiary tasks, the work preparation can be used. This method, known from the above ground construction, can be adapted and used underground. The approach of a digital work preparation tool combines, connects and adapts the main tasks “choice of procedure,” “logistics” and “site planning.” In addition, the digital tool is connected with digital models (construction, site, surroundings). With the adaption and forward projection of the work preparation, underground constructions (e.g., tunneling) can provide a more sustainable and efficient outcome.

The performance of a full-scale balling drum circuit is well known to fluctuate, and is difficult to control. The fluctuations stem from causes that are not readily quantifiable. Results from plant tests show that surging of the recycle tonnage is dependent, inter alia, on the method of bentonite addition, small variations in drum or cutter bar speed and the method of drum water addition. This paper presents detailed observations from experiments on full-scale drum circuits, including preliminary results of a computer measurement and control scheme. Size distributions measured at points along an industrial drum are presented, together with the results of a mathematical model fitted to one plant data set. Model predictions are also included emphasizing the importance of screen performance on circuit stability.

How to connect an effluent conveyance tunnel to riser shaft and diffuser arms of an outfall system is dictated by the ground conditions, which ideally include rock or soil strata of low permeability. Where such favorable conditions are beyond reach, both the complexity of designing and the risk of constructing this crucial system connection increase disproportionally. This paper describes the considerations that went into the approach of connecting a 5-m-diameter TBM drive with the in-river riser shaft of the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the highly permeable Fraser River sands at hydrostatic pressures exceeding 3 bar.

"Due to new technological developments, automatic sensor based sorting has made progress within industrial minerals, precious metals, diamond, and coal mining in recent years (Lessard et. al. 2016). In order to re-introduce the technology to other mining sectors, this research discusses its application to iron, manganese, and zinc ores through test works performed by the authors. These test works were performed using Dual Energy X-ray Transmission (DE-XRT) sensor technology. In each case, pre-concentrations of the ore were created demonstrating the possibility to reduce waste material, energy costs, and water consumption while improving product quality of the ores. INTRODUCTION Sorting of mining ores is as old as mining itself (Salter, 1991). Sensor based sorting applications in coal mining began as early as the late 19th century (Louis 1928). New sensor technologies were developed and implemented sequentially for uranium, nickel, coal, and gold mining (Refining, 1949, Rose et al, 1950, Bloomfield et al, 1966, Clayton et al, 1987, Robben and Mosser, 2014). While these sensor technologies were developed decades ago, computational capacity to keep pace with the vast amount of information required utilizing the sensor technology did not arrive until recently (Lessard et. al., 2016). The sensor based sorting (SBS) process was effectively described by Salter and Wyatt in Minerals Engineering in 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck in 2010 in the Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry under Sensor Based Sorting. Both descriptions include the following key steps: 1. Presentation of the material or particles. 2. Examination or detection of the material or particles. 3. Processing or analysis of the data generated. 4. Physical separation of the material or particles by external means. Effective presentation of the material or particles is achieved when the sensor is capable of identifying each particle individually. This step requires that each fragment of the material be isolated, and it often involves acceleration of the material fragments by chute or mechanical means, as well as the spreading of particles by vibratory feeders (Salter and Wyatt, 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck, 2010). The isolated particles typically are conveyed into an area wherein they are subjected to electromagnetic irradiation (except in cases of some radioactive ores), either in the form of x-ray, visible light, infrared, or other energies. A wide range of applications for sensor based sorting exists in the literature. The majority of applications fall into one of two camps, (1) pre-concentration of mineral ores, or (2) characterization of the material during processing (Buxton and Benndorf 2013). While there is much to be gained from in-line material characterization and the resulting control both of quality and processing, this article focuses primarily on the camp of pre-concentration of mineral ores."

The Colorado portion of the Rio Grande rift is clearly defined physiographically from the south in the San Luis valley northward to the latitude of Leadville where sediments of the Dry Union Formation (Tweto, 1961) accumulated within the subsiding rift zone. To the north of Leadville is a system of faults active in the late Tertiary, including the Mosquito fault that offset a portion of the Climax mineralization (Wallace et al., 1968). Tweto (197B) describes remnants of Dry Union Formation against the Mosquito fault north of Dillon in the Blue River valley, so it is apparent that the rift and associated sediments extended well to the north of Leadville. Kelley (1952, 1954, 1956) and Chapin (1971) have noted in New Mexico that the Rio Grande rift is a series of en echelon basins, offset to the east, with constrictions connecting them (Fig. 1). In Colorado the structural basins are offset to the west. The net effect of all the rift zone basins in New Mexico and Colorado is an arcuate pattern (Fig. 1) abutting the Colorado Plateau and Sari Juan Volcanic Province on the west. The width of the rift system gradually decreases northward to about Leadville where rift definition is not apparent.

The Lac Shortt gold deposit is located in Northwestern Quebec, at some 115 km west of the Opemiska Division and 380 km northeast of the Lac Dufault Division, as shown on Figure 1. Falconbridge's exploration crews drilled the first six holes in the gold-bearing ore zone in 1979. After further diamond drilling from surface in 1980, the decision was taken to carry out an underground exploration program. A three-compartment shaft was sunk to a depth of 340 metres in 1981 and 1982; it was followed by an extensive exploration program, which included 1073 metres of cross-cutting and footwall drifting, 645 metres of ore drifting and 11 200 metres of diamond drilling. The underground work was completed by mid-winter 1983. It was followed by a complete feasibility study of the Lac Shortt Project. After some $Can 14.2 millions in exploration expenditures, the Board of Directors of Corp. Falconbridge Copper approved in July 1983 additional expenditures of $Can 45 millions to bring the Lac Shortt Mine in production at the capacity of 261 000 tonnes per year. Gold price was $US 425 per ounce at the time.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metro is a 98 mile rapid transit system that will serve the District of Columbia, southern Maryland, and northern Virginia. The construction work herein described relates to Section B-1 of this system. The contract for this work was awarded by the Owner, The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, to a joint venture doing business under the name of Ball-Shea-Norair. The partners in this venture were Gordon H. Ball, Inc., Danville, California; J. F. Shea Company, Inc., Walnut Creek, California; and Norair Engineering Corporation, Washington, D. C. The bid price for the project was $33,741,524 with a contract duration of 910 calendar days. Notice to proceed was issued January 5, 1970. The present modified price for the work is $36,866,000 with completion anticipated in July 1974. (About 1,638 days elapsed time.) The work to be done consisted essentially of construction of 3,490 linear feet of cut-and-cover track with side platform, and 600 ft cut-and-cover arch shaped subway stations. Stations are located in Judiciary Square and Eighth & G Street, N. W., areas. Decking of excavation in street areas, maintenance of traffic and utilities, vent and fan shafts, underpinning of court buildings in Judiciary Square and the Smithsonian National Portrait Building, and an electrical substation were included in the contract. Stations were constructed of cast-in-place concrete.

The Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating the recovery of phosphate from beneficiation slime, as part of the Bureau's efforts to conserve mineral resources through increased use of wastes. Phosphate equivalent to about two-fifths of U.S. production is discarded annually in the wastes. Exploratory flotation tests on the plus 5-um fraction of a slime sample showed promise for a classification-flotation technique. Onsite classification tests at six phosphate washing plants were conducted with a two-stage hydro cyclone system designed to recover the plus 5-um material. The cyclone underflows contained 8.3 to 19.1 percent P2O5, and the recovery of the plus 5-um PZOS values ranged from 81 to 95 percent. The percent P2O5 recovery from the total slimes ranged from 38 to 47 percent. Batch-flotation studies are currently being conducted.

Investment decision for large mining projects imply an enormous financial risk and therefore, require a more complex risk evaluation methodology taking into account all sources of uncertainty from each process in the project value chain. Generally, the main sources of risk are those related to uncertainty on grade and other techical variables of the orebody. In this study, conditional simulation is applied to develop a risk management model to quantify and to manage financial risk associated to uncertainty on the grade of the orebody. The model was validated in case study on a real porphyry copper orebody in Chile.

Each year, one living Hall of Fame inductee, up to three Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, and recipients of an Industry Partnership Award and a Special Citation are recognized for their respective contributions to the mining industry. Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. "Over the years, the decline of high grade ores have become an increasing problem in the global mining industry. As such, techniques and chemistries must change in order to continue to meet the market demand and quality. Reverse cationic flotation of quartz and silicates is one of the most important techniques for generating the industry standard product from minerals such as iron and phosphate ores. Amine collectors are the global standard in such processes. However, as the ore quality continues to decline so must the chemistry change to meet the change in ore composition. This paper will focus on the introduction and full scale application of a novel amine collector towards a cleaner flotation process in phosphate beneficiation with Crago process. The results suggests the collector is capable of improving the phosphate recovery, in this cleaner circuit, to approximately 94% with minimal sensitivity to the everyday changes in feed grade.INTRODUCTION The days of mining high grade minerals are long gone, but the demand continues to increase. Phosphate ore, for example, is most dominantly demanded from the agriculture industry as a fertilizer component (i.e. diammonium phosphate, DAP) (FAO, 2014). Some literature suggests that global food production must increase by approximately 70% by 2050 (Cordell, 2009). It is also suggested that the peak global phosphorus production will occur around the year 2033, which is the period at which the easily accessible reserves have been depleted. Currently, phosphorus is commonly mined with a BPL (Bone Phosphate of Lime) concentration of 12-20% and a remainder typically being gangue minerals such as silica, clays, metal oxides, calcareous minerals, and carbonaceous minerals. These gangue components can lead to various negative processing and utilization consequences. Calcium, from carbonaceous minerals, is problematic due to the elevated levels of sulfuric acid required to convert the phosphate rock to the acid form (SRI Consulting, 2009). Calcium can also lead to elevated dosages of flotation reagents due to the desire of the fatty acid to coordinate to calcium minerals. Carbonate leads to increased levels of foam during the wet acid process. Silica is associated with the level of insols (acid insolubles), which must be less than 10% in the final concentrate that will be transferred to the chemical plant for acidification. Phosphate ore can generally be classified as carbonaceous or siliceous (El-Shall, 2003). Siliceous ores are commonly processed through various sizing steps followed by multi-staged flotation (Figure 1) (FIPR, 2014 & Güven, 2010). Though the higher grade phosphate pebble is declining, many mines are still able to size good enough to produce some amount of such pebble. Unlike most metal flotation processes where grinding is a necessity for an optimal process, Florida phosphate flotation does not generally require aggressive grinding and can typically operate at 0.1-1.0 mm. The rougher flotation step applies pH modification to achieve the optimal pH of 8.8-9.3 followed by conditioning with a fatty acid type collector, which builds a hydrophobic waxy layer on the surface of the particle to assist in the flotation. This generally achieves higher than 85% recovery of a product with 50-60% BPL and 15-30% insols. Unfortunately, DAP production generally requires 3.5 tons of phosphate rock containing greater than 63% BPL to produce 1 ton of phosphoric acid (ArgusMedia, 2014). Thus, further purification is required to achieve the grade by the chemical plant for fertilizer production. After the fatty acid is scrubbed off the phosphate particles using sulfuric acid (pH 2.5-3.5), the pH is generally operationally readjusted to 6.5-7.2 by washing with “fresh” water. A second collector is applied prior to the cleaner, which is a reverse cationic flotation process. This collector is typically a cationic amine based reagent, which should have an affinity for silica containing mineral"

"By the end of the 1950s, the German hard coal mining industry produced 150 million tons of hard coal per year in 170 collieries with 600,000 employees. At that time, 70% of the primary energy demand of the Federal Republic of Germany was covered by domestic coal. However, due to coal mining becoming an increasingly globalized business and the oil and gas industry producing with lower costs, the German domestic hard coal industry stood constantly under restructur-ing pressure. The industry declined until the end of its life cycle. In 2007, a political understanding was arranged to phase out German hard coal mining in a socially acceptable manner by the end of 2018. This decision required a new strategy for the coal mining industry. Being strictly finalized, the German hard coal mining industry has to be prepared for the post-mining era. To create a sustainable development strategy, the long-term impacts of coal mining activities in Germany concerning the environmental, economic and social dimensions will be analyzed systematically and forward-looking. The regional and social responsibility during the closing process and for the post-mining era will be emphasized. High technical standards in environmental protec-tion and post-mining technologies, as well as long term experiences in the development of former mine sites to create new jobs are significant from an international point of view. The traditionally constructive social partnership between employers, union, and employees has enabled long-term stable adaption processes and avoided social friction. The sustainability strategy of the German hard coal mining industry can be regarded as a role model for other mining countries and regions facing similar transition challenges. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining is a finite business that reaches its end if the deposits are depleted or the raw materials can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way. However, the impact of mining is po-tentially an infinite one – at least if you measure it at a human time scale. Mining always means interfering with geological and ecological structures that cannot be reversed to their original condition. In general, the mining cycle (Figure 1) can be divided into three phases: 1. The exploration phase, in which the deposit is investigated to determine its technical and economic profitability. The period of these undertakings is relatively short and can lead to the launch of mining operations. 2. What follows is the actual mining phase which usually lasts for a long time and ends latest when all deposits are fully depleted. This lifespan may be shortened if the economic conditions (production cost or market price) deteriorate. Nevertheless, mining may be resumed if those conditions become favorable once more (examples are silver mining in Germany or rare earths mining in the USA). 3. The longest phase, however, is the post-mining phase as the human interference into geology and nature is usually inten-sive and irreversible. Mining can lead to consequences which have a permanently adverse impact on people and the environment; therefore, they have to be managed as best we can (1)."

Cathodic Protection using impressed current was employed to reduce the wear of the mill wall during ball mill grinding. Wear rates were determined from weight-loss measurements made on four, I-inch diameter, mild steel coupons installed flush with the interior surface of the mill wall. Grinding tests were conducted on quartz, pyrite and quartz-pyrite mixtures at pH values of 4.6, 7.1 and 9.2. Cathodic protection was shown to reduce mill wear by 40-60010. An examination of the coupon surfaces using scanning electron microscopy showed that cathodic protection greatly reduced pitting corrosion. The presence of a sulfide mineral, such as pyrite, was found to increase the wear rate significantly, possibly due to galvanic interactions. It is also found that the wear rate is significantly higher than the sum of abrasive wear and the corrosive wear, due to a synergistic effect.

Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost over $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high cost makes extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. This paper reports operations research techniques used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate over 30% of the total U.S. longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation models of transfers under varying conditions were generated; and, the economics of general transfers and time-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure were investigated.
