The sequential copper analysis method is a particularly useful technique to semi-quantitatively define the geologic, mineralogic, and metallurgical types and zonations commonly associated with porphyry-type copper deposits. The method is based on the partial dissolution behavior displayed by the prevalent copper minerals malachite, chrysocolla, chalcocite, and chalcopyrite to solutions containing sulfuric acid and sodium cyanide. Results from sequential analyses of the sample and analytical residue using sulfuric acid followed by sodium cyanide and then aqua regia solutions when compared with conventional total copper analyses can determine the amounts of leachable oxide minerals, leachable secondary sulfide minerals, and primary copper minerals, respectively. Sequential assay analytical results and interpretation are presented for copper deposits in Chile, Mexico, and the United States.

Lead ions originating from galena during processing of complex sulphide ores migrate to "cover" the surface of sphalerite and iron sulphide mineral particles, and cause poor selectivity in differential flotation. Generally in sulphide ore processing, the lead-activated minerals float in the Cu/Pb rougher circuit. Subsequently, surface lead complicates the zinc flotation circuit by lowering the concentrate grade due to the co-flotation of lead-activated iron sulphide minerals. The effect of lead in the differential flotation of sphalerite from Cu-Pb-Zn and Pb-Zn ores is discussed. Plant and laboratory test data are interpreted by determining the surface composition of individual grains of sphalerite and iron sulphide particles using two surface analytical techniques, Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometer (LIMS) and Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (TOF-SIMS). Cationic and anionic species on the surface were analyzed to elucidate the phenomena.

Coal/pyrite fines were froth floated in a laboratory cell to examine the rate of pyrite recovery during conventional coal flotation. The effects of collector, particle size and carbon to total sulfur ratio on the kinetics of recovery were investigated. These data coupled with microscopic examination suggest that miniscule amounts of coal that remain attached to the pyrite surface affect the rate of flotation of pyrite.

Reaction kinetics for gold dissolution in acid thiourea solutions were investigated using formamidine disulfide as an oxidant. For the conditions studied it appears that a surface reaction limits the rate of gold dissolution. The rate was found to be first order with respect to thiourea concentration and half order with respect to the concentration of formamidine disulfide; the apparent activation energy for the reaction was 10.40 kcal/mol (43.40 kJ/mol); and the reaction rate was independent of pH for the pH range 1.0 to 3.0.

The Mitchell Point tunnel is a part of several ongoing efforts to connect the 12-mile-long Historic Columbia River trail between Mitchell Point Outlook to Mitchell Point Drive. The tunnel lies inside the Mitchell Spur entablature basalt geologic feature, extending 647 linear feet utilizing a typical horseshoe section with a height of 14.5 feet. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) required proper vibration control to minimize potential impacts to Interstate 84 and Union Pacific rail immediately below the tunnel excavations and sensitive, rare plants. The method of designing the vibration monitoring program and the results of its implementation show the iterative process of using monitoring to improve blast design as excavation proceeds, such as reducing air overpressure and COVID-related supply chain-constraints.

Tracer gas sampling methods are useful for monitoring ventilation systems, especially in remote or inaccessible areas, and can be utilized for analysis of the ventilation system immediately following a mine emergency. However, the success of this technique is largely dependent on the accuracy of release and sampling methods. Analysis of sampling methods is crucial for rapid response and dependable results during emergencies. For the purpose of this study, four well-accepted sampling techniques currently used in the mining industry were compared using solid-phase microextraction (SPMe) fibers with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), an industry standard, as the tracer gas. Current sample collection techniques include plastic syringes, glass syringes, Tedlar bags and vacutainers. SPMe fibers are used in a variety of industries, from forensics to environmental sampling, and are a solventless method of sampling analytes. To analyze these sampling methods, samples were taken from a 0.01 % standard mixture of SF6 and nitrogen and analyzed using electron capture gas chromatography. A relative standard error of less than 10% validated results to compare the accuracy of various methods. The technical and practical issues surrounding each sampling method were also observed and discussed.

The Rondout Bypass Tunnel in New York has two access shafts. The upper sections of the shafts are lined with steel pipe to resist a substantial net internal water head . Initial design included a ¾-inch-thick cement mortar lining (CML) for all three components. Because of concerns with CML application on large-diameter pipes, the protective lining was redesigned for shotcrete application. This paper discusses the details of that design, mock-ups, and shotcrete application.

"This paper discusses how an existing grey cast iron segmental tunnel lining responds to construction of a new SCL tunnel transversely beneath with zero clearance; how the damage assessment for the existing tunnel was conducted for impact of longitudinal movement; how the tunnel is subsequently instrumented to observe both movement and stress manifestation at its longitudinal connections and how the results from the instruments compare with the prediction. An assessment of neutral axis of the tunnel in longitudinal flexure is also explored using interpolated horizontal displacement data from a conventional monitoring system. INTRODUCTION The Royal Mail Tunnel (RMT) (formely Post Office Tunnel or ‘Mailrail’) was constructed using semi-mechanised deep level construction techniques from 1914 and 1917 (Lee 1938). Commencing full commercial operation in 1926, the system was until 2003; conveying parcels the 6.5 miles between seven sorting offices in the center of London, and linking the system with main line rail stations, Paddington and Liverpool Street (The British Postal Museum & Archive 2013). A single tunnel of 2.74m internal diameter facilitated a bi-directional twin narrow-gauge (~611mm gauge) railway road system for electric driverless operation. The tunnel lining is segmental grey cast iron (grade 10) made up of six flanged segments and a smaller flanged key segment; constructed into a ring of width 508mm The external diameter of the tunnel is 2.971m. For further details of the tunnel lining and material properties are outlined by (Devriendt & Alhaddad 2014).London Underground Bond Street Station is a major station of the London Underground system in the very center of London; in its vicinity, the RMT runs west-east perpendicularly above the north south Jubilee Line tunnels. Historic survey record of the Jubilee Line’s (the then Fleet Line) construction in 1974 and its impact on the RMT case is documented in (Crossrail 1993): it is one of only a hand full of case-studies frequently cited when assessing the impact of new construction scenarios of this type; not least including the assessment of the same tunnel, at the same site some 40 years later, and the subject material for this paper: It noted significant vertical displacement of ~90mm to the RMT without noticeable serviceability or operational impediment."

The rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical (metallic) elements which appear in the periodic table. The group consists of 15 lanthanide elements along with yttrium and scandium (Table 1). They share many similar properties, which is why they occur together in geological deposits. Although commonly referred to as rare, they are really quite common; the reason they are perceived as rare is because it is not common to find them in commercially viable concentrations. These metals are critical to advanced technology, ranging from smart phones to global positions system (GPS) receivers, medical devices and jet engines. They are critical in green, high-tech and defense industries (Fig.1 and 2). Although there have been increasing efforts to find alternative supplies, these efforts have been complicated by the pollution that rare earth mining and processing creates. To extract rare earths minerals from mined ore is a complicated and costly process. The ore is first mined through normal mining process, the bastnaesite, which generally contains a number of minerals of little value, is first removed through a floatation process. The bastnaesite containing the REEs is further separated into their respective pure forms in a separation plant using acid and various solvent extraction separation steps. Each element has its own unique extraction steps and chemical processes. At times, these elements, in the form of oxides, will require reprocessing to achieve ideal purity. The last steps would be to further process into metals first, then alloys for various applications. The entire process takes approximately 10 days. The mining and processing of REEs, if not carefully controlled, can create environmental hazards. This is one of the reasons the Mountain Pass Mine in California was closed down in the 1980s.

Surface mining accounts for most coal production in Indian geo-mining conditions compared with underground methods, whose implementations are in deeper coal reserves and for lower stripping ratio in a congested operating space. The bord-and-pillar method is the preferred underground method in India for reasons of flexibility and investment cost. While previous researchers conducted field investigations on intact overburden conditions, this study focuses on the strata control issues in a bord-and-pillar depillaring working under the influence of the dead-load condition of voluminous and fragmented softcover of overburden dump material. The modeling results helped in ascertaining the criticality of strata behavior and rib-pillar stability in actual mining conditions when compared with the conventional intact overburden.

Originally, the term solution mining applied to a dissolution, washing, or "brining" of soluble salts such as halite (common table salt), potash or trona. After the mid-sixties, however, the definition has been expanded to include heap and dump leaching, in-place (in situ) leaching, removal of oil from tar sands, extraction of sulfur from deep wells by the Frasch process and the recovery of metalliferous solutions from geothermal sources. Solution mining is also known as borehole, non-shaft, or chemical mining; the extraction of soluble mineral values from a variety of ores using appropriate solvents and chemicals. Solution mining frequently involves chemical changes; for example, copper usually goes into solution as copper sulfate, gold and silver as a cyanide compound, and uranium as a sulfate or uranyl tricarbonate. The valuable constituent is removed from the solid body of the ore by mass transfer to a aqueous solution.

Introduction In view of the continuing depletion of natural resources, requirements for energy conservation, plant optimization and hazardous waste management, and environmental consciousness, recycling and secondary recovery of materials are being developed with increasing interest Many secondary recovery processes are being developed that apply mineral processing technology. Gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation have all emerged as explicit methods for recovering residual values from various process streams and hazardous constituents from waste streams. Recently, a technique for concentrating metallics has been successfully reintroduced. The concept of the alternating magnetic field eddy-current separator was developed over a century ago using rudimentary electromagnets (Patent 400317 issued to Thomas Edison on March 26, 1889). Widespread acceptance was, however, hindered by high costs, marginal results and poor economic incentives for secondary recovery. With the recent increased interest in secondary recovery and the development of high-energy rare earth permanent magnets, the eddy-current separator has now gained prominent acceptance. The separation forces imparted by an eddy current separator are the function of the magnetic field intensity and the alternating frequency of the magnetic field. The evolution of permanent magnets has provided a cost effective alternative for the generation of high-intensity magnetic fields. High-energy rare earth permanent magnets have substantially reduced the capital and operating costs over the electromagnetic circuits employed in antecedent eddy-current separators. Specifically, in recent years, the strength of permanent magnets has increased several fold with neodymium-boron-iron rare earth magnets now providing an energy product of 35 million gauss-oersted. Figure 1 shows the evolution in the strength of permanent magnets. The development of these rare earth magnets has led to the design of circuits possessing a magnetic force an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional permanent magnetic circuits. The eddy-current separator has been successfully applied in several metal sorting and recovery operations. Most common is the sorting of metal from shredded automobile scrap and municipal waste. With the advent of high-frequency, high-intensity magnetic fields, the separator has advanced to the point where it has direct application in the beneficiation of fine sized metals. Relatively fine sized (-1/4 in.) metal bearing slags and spent foundry casting sands as well as precious metal hearing electronic scrap demonstrate excellent metallurgical response to the eddy-current separator, and applications have progressed to finer materials and more selective separations. Theory Electrical currents are induced in all conductors when exposed to an alternating magnetic field. The induced current generates a magnetic field in the conductor that opposes that of the alternating magnetic field. Figure 2, is a schematic illustration of generated eddy currents. In this particular example, the alternating magnetic field is produced by a series of permanent magnets mounted on the circumference of a rotor. The permanent magnets have alternating polarity. As the rotor revolves, an alternating magnetic field is produced, and the rate of revolution determines the frequency of the alternating magnetic field. When a conductor, such as a metallic disc in the illustration, is placed in the alternating magnetic field, a closed loop current flow occurs. The current loop in the conductor produces a magnetic field that is a mirror image of the alternating magnetic field. At any point in time, the induced magnetic field in the conductor directly opposes the alternating magnetic field. This opposition of magnetic fields produces an instantaneous repulsion in the conductor. The conductor is consequently repelled from the rotor. The alternating magnetic field has no effect on nonmetallic materials as they pass through the magnetic field and discharge the rotor in a natural trajectory. [ ]

Underground mining of limestone is becoming increasingly attractive in Illinois. Most quarries are near rivers on the western and southern borders where competition for land use is intensive. Increasing demands for stone can be met by expanded mining with access by edits in existing quarries and by inclines and shafts at downdip sites. Geologic, hydrologic, and engineering conditions indicate that deep mines in the Ste. Genevieve, St. Louis, Salem, Ullin, and basal Burlington Limestones of Mississippian age and in the Moredock Limestone Member of the Dunleith Formation of Ordovician age are possible, but development will require prudent exploration and planning to ensure that the product will be of good quality.

The viability of physico-chemical purification methods such as selective flocculation for separation of two components having similar chemical composition and same crystal structure but different surface properties is demonstrated. Loss of selectivity was observed in a dolomite-dolomite mixture with Polyethylene Oxide (5 million molecular weight) as the flocculant. Hetero-flocculation was minimized using a low molecular weight PEO (MW -105) as the site blocking agent (SBA). Near complete separation was achieved at pH 10.5 at 100% recovery level.

Introduction The US mineral industry in 1983 participated in the recovery from the recent recession. Compared with 1982, the value of raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8% to $21.2 billion. The $218 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output represented a 9% increase over 1982. Even in real terms, these figures reflect growth. Demand for nonfuel mineral materials, of course, depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1983. Of particular importance to the mineral industry were surges in key mineral-consuming sectors such as construction and automobile manufacturing. New housing starts rose one-third, to 1.7 million units, while automakers turned out about 35% more cars (6.8 million) and 25% more trucks (2.4 million) than in 1982. These are significant increases, even considering recent trends toward smaller, lighter vehicles, and multiple-unit housing. A comeback for the mineral industry, however, is bound to proceed unevenly, particularly at the beginning. Traditionally, the industry lags behind the rest of the economy during a recovery, and some mineral products respond to overall economic improvement more quickly than others. This pattern has been repeated many times and the industry is used to it. Mineral executives know it is best to be patient and cautious during the first stages of an economic upturn. Many experts say that it may take extraordinary toughness, patience, and caution this time around. Steel Improves Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - rose 14% to 77 Mt (85 million st), stimulating a 7% rise in domestic iron ore production to 39 Mt (38 million It). Still, the iron ore industry operated at less than half capacity, with most major mines remaining closed for part of the year. Iron ore imports dropped 24% to 10 Mt (11 million st), so demand was partly met by withdrawals from stocks. Despite the increase in steel production for 1983, output remained far below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1983 production was still 29% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity actually declined about 10% during the year to 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports, especially those from developing nations, as a major cause of domestic capacity loss. As long as steel production remains weak, steelmaking metals suffer. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about one-third capacity in 1983, with six of the 19 companies involved being closed all year. The US mined no manganese or chromium, and very little nickel, although the country's only nickel mine did resume production in November. Molybdenum production, at 13.6 t (15 st), was only about one-third as much as in 1982. The major molybdenum mines, Climax and Henderson in Colorado, remained closed all year. To meet demand, molybdenum stocks were halved to 19 t (21 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, dropped 30% to 1.1 kt (1,200 st) of contained metal. One of the most positive responses to the general economic recovery came from the aluminum smelting industry. By the end of the year, it was operating at about 79% capacity, compared to 59% in January. Nevertheless, the 3.3 Mt (3.64 million st) of primary aluminum produced represented only a slight increase over 1982. Total bauxite imports were about 27% below 1982 levels. INTRODUCTION Continuous mining machines are used in regular flat ore beds having uniform thickness. Since coal is the most common type of material occurring in such beds, most continuous miners are used for the extraction of coal from underground mines. The first continuous mining machine for under¬ground coal mining was introduced in 1948. In one machine, the continuous miner combines the functions performed by a conventional face drill, a cutting ma¬chine, and a loading machine. It breaks or digs the material out of the surrounding solid and transfers the material back through the machine chassis by means of a chain conveyor. The conveyor carries the material to a haulage system, usually a rubber-tired vehicle known as a shuttle car. Generally, continuous miners are used in seam heights from 890 to 3660 mm (35 to 144 in.). For seam heights of 1070 mm (42 in.) or less, the haulage system may be a multiple-bridge conveyor or battery-powered tractors that haul low-bed trailers. Proj¬ects are being undertaken by private industry and through government contracts to develop a continuous haulage system for all seam heights. As of 1976, the majority of continuous miners were of two types. The first type is the drum miner, which mounts the cutting elements on a series of drums across the cutting head of the machine, sometimes using a cutting chain to cut clearance for the gear drive. In the drum-type machines, the cutting head rotates parallel to the material face. The second type is the auger miner, which utilizes cutting elements mounted on two auger-type cutting heads. One head is located on each side of the machine, with the heads mounted per¬pendicular to the material face. Chain-head ripper-type miners/miners having rotary cutting elements with oscillating motion and twin-head boring-type miners have all been popular within the last 15 years. Although these are considered obsolete, some machines are still being supplied for specialized applications. GENERAL DESCRIPTION This chapter describes only continuous mining ma¬chines available as manufacturers' production models as of September 1976. Figs. 1 through 11 illustrate some typical machines currently in use. Cutting Elements The cutting elements are the interface between the machine and the material being mined. In describing the cutting elements, consideration must be given to the differences between the drum- and auger-type machines, the bit-tip speeds, and the bit types. Drum-Type Continuous Mining Machines: Three of the four principal manufacturers of drum-type miners use multi-motor designs that provide separate a-c motors for driving the cutting elements. Gear trains are used to reduce the speeds of the motors to the rotational speeds of the cutting elements. One of the three suppliers drives the cutting elements of its low-seam models with a heavy-duty drive chain that is equipped with cutting bits; all other functions of this machine have separate motor drives that are either electrical or hydraulic. The fourth principal manufacturer generally provides two a-c electric motors, utilizing gear reducers, drive shafts, and hydraulically operated engaging clutches to power all of the operating functions, including the cut¬ting elements. Some drum-type miners use trim chains, equipped with cutting bits, to cut clearance for the gear drives. These trim chains vary from two 305-mm (12-in.) chains to one 760-mm (30-in.) chain per machine, de¬pending upon the manufacturer's design concept. In all machines other than the low-seam models that use chains to drive the heads, the trim chains are driven by sprockets on the drive shaft of the final cutterhead drum; therefore, the trim chains are not used for power trans¬mission to the cutting elements. In addition to cutting clearance for the gear drives, the trim chains provide uniform bit spacing all the way across the head and assist in moving the cut material to an area where it is either loaded directly into the miner's conveyor or is easier to load into the conveyor. On a drum-type mining machine, the cutting ele¬ments all rotate from the top to the bottom. Therefore, the recommended procedure is to raise the cutterhead to the maximum seam height, sump the entire machine forward to maximum depth by means of a crawler drive, and then shear downward until the cutter elements reach the floor level. The maximum sump depth varies ac¬cording to the drum diameter, the type of material, the floor conditions, and the operator's abilities. It normally varies an average of 460 to 760 mm (18 to 30 in.). Cutter drums are supplied with two types of cutting bit holders. Weld-on holders are attached permanently. Pin-on holders are replaceable at the face. Cutter-drum diameters over the bit tips vary from 660 to 965 mm (26 to 38 in.), depending upon the chassis height of the machine and the range of cutting heights. "INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. During the past decade, a general awareness of the need for and subsequent development of increased safety in United States coal mines has taken place. Government and industry alike were stimulated into accelerating their actions through unacceptable accident statistics and costs (in terms of human misery dollar values). Those of us who work in the United States coal industry are aware of the development of governmental controls on nine safety. Both Federal and State regulations have placed increased responsibility upon mine owners and operators to insure a safe working environment and to provide training for miners. No other industrial group of workers has received such attention or, in our opinion, deserves it more.

Methane has been a hazard since the beginning of coal mining and has influenced, more or less, every aspect of coal mine design. It is receiving increased attention lately because the rate of methane emission in coal mines is increasing as increasing demand for coal leads to exploitation of deeper seams and the use of higher productivity equipment. Consequently, the government and private industries have directed a great deal of effort towards understanding and solving the problem of methane emission in coal mines. In the United States, Consolidation Coal Company has pioneered research in this area since the early 1950&apos;s.1 Currently this work is being expanded by Consol through the Mining Research Division of the parent company, Continental Oil (Conoca), to find new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas. Basic reservoir properties of coal seams, such as gas content, reservoir pres-sure, diffusivity, porosity and permeability are better understood today largely through the efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Minese2,3,4 It is possible now to identify and model the basic mechanism of gas emission from coal and to forecast steady as well as unsteady state emission of methane in coal mines with some degree of reliability. Combining this knowledge with any ventilation simulator should often identify problem areas in advance and permit adequate methane control measures to be planned.5 Another recent innovation in methane control is the horizontal hole drilling technology. The U. S. "Coal mines opting for longwall mining or its variations rely on the main and tail gates for production. Stability of these entries or crosscuts is crucial in coal mining operations. Roof or strata failure can be fatal, may lead to property loss and delay in production. Failure of the gates depends upon many factors including the mining method, panel dimensions, pillar width, mine depth, caving rate, dimensions of gates and roof strength properties. In Pakistan coal is mined through a variation of longwall mining method with almost no mechanization while using timber as a primary support. Timber support as chock is very useful in coal mines especially in overhanging face. Similarly gate entries and coal faces are supported by chock supports throughout their length. In this paper the stability of the longwall gate is assessed for a typical coal mine in Pakistan by using finite element code. Numerical modelling considerations for gate entries are discussed. A model parametric study is performed for key factors. The results showed that the existing mining practice is not suitable and there is a need to review the mining approach. INTRODUCTION Main and tail gate entries leading to longwall mining panel play a crucial role in production cycle. Failure of any of these may lead to loss of life, property and production delays. The stability of gate entries depends primarily on the nature of loading and stresses incurred. It is relatively easier to assess the ground response to production for common longwall mining panel. In thin-seam coal mines the gate entries are generally supported throughout their length by timber made chock supports. The tailgates receive huge deformations and stresses during the mining and backfilling cycle. The chock supports are required to take care of rock falls leading to blockage of entries causing production delays and loss of capital. A number of supports are available for supporting the gate entries (Hoek and Brown 1980; Brady and Brown 1985). The support system can be selected based on load-deformation characteristics including the yielding behavior, pre- and post-yielding behavior (Barczak, 2003). The principal of support selection is that the support characteristics must match the ground response in order to maintain the gate entries (Mucho, et al., 1999). It has been observed that thin-seam mining (<1 m) is very challenging and it is necessary to develop an understanding of ground mechanics before the selection of an efficient support system Dolinar (2003). The chock supports have been tested for load-deformation characteristics in the laboratory (Barczak 2003). But the ground and support interaction, response and loads must be assessed for individual site. This can be accomplished by in-situ testing and observations at few locations. The generated data is generally insufficient for complete understanding. Numerical models can combine the data generated in the laboratory and on-site to fulfill the requirements."
