Microcomputer analysis has long been a technique for engineering professionals to improve the theoretical and practical design of continuous mining systems. Such work has been typically composed of modeling observed events and then introducing a variety of known elements with predicted results to compare against the results of the model. Programs written in BASIC, Cobol, Fortran, or other language dominated such efforts. These programs have taken years to develop and prove out. This paper explores a new management tool used at TMC on a daily basis to track and improve continuous mining systems through the use of microcomputers and Lotus 1-2-3 software. By analyzing data provided by section foreman, shift foreman, and maintenance personnel against predetermined goals, new production targets are developed, weaknesses in the current mining systems are identified, and the results of changes are measured. The results of this system on the productive output of TMC systems are on the order of ten percent improvement.

Cross country belt conveyors are becoming the preferred method of bulk material handling in the industrial complex. Installed cost, maintenance, reliability, simplicity and operating expense enhance this choice, especially when faced with rising cost and questionable availability of liquid fuels. Conveyor flights are getting longer, faster, and higher in capacity, and are being installed in rugged terrain. Rights of way are often difficult to obtain. All these considerations lead up to design aspects well beyond those for in-plant conveyors. This paper points out some of the aspects that lead to the successful design of a cross country belt conveyor system.

The goal of hot mix asphalt (HMA) design is optimal material blending to meet Superpave specifications. HMA cost minimization has being modeled as linear programing (LP) (Awuah-Offei et al 2011) and mixed integer LP problems (Brown et al, 2012) and solved with commercial software such as LINDO and CPLEX. Often these software, which are designed to solve general optimization problems, have licenses that cost thousands of dollars. The objective of this study is to develop a novel solution algorithm to the HMA optimization problem presented by Brown et al. (2012), which will negate the need for expensive commercial packages and is specific to this problem. This novel algorithm is based on the branch and bound algorithm for solving mixed integer problems. The algorithm is incorporated into a software package with an easy-to-use graphical user interface. The developed algorithm is validated using a real-life HMA problem. Using this solution algorithm will save companies thousands of dollars, otherwise used to purchase software licenses.

China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.

A review of the published literature on the mechanism of depression of sulfide minerals shows that a unified theory is not yet available. The various mechanisms that have been postulated include competition between depressants and collectors to adsorb at the surface sites, creation of thermodynamic conditions nonconducive for formation of a metal collector salt or formation of a hydrophilic coating on the surface. The hydrophilic coating may or matt not effect the adsorption of collectors. In yet another mechanism, the depressant nay participate directly in oxidation/reduction reactions between collectors and sulfide minerals. Examples from the literature are discussed to highlight oxidation/reduction effects in the depression of sulfide minerals.

"Tests were conducted to determine properties of 4 foam agents for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. Foam has been tried in underground mining in the past for dust control and is currently being reconsidered for use in underground coal longwall operations in order to help those operations comply with MSHA’s lower coal mine respirable dust standard (1.5 mg/m3). Foams were generated using two different methods. One method used compressed air and water pressure to generate foam, while the other method used a low pressure air generated by a blower and water pressure using a NIOSH developed foam generator. Foam property tests comprising of a bottle shake test, foam expansion ratio, and water drainage were used to classify foams. The bottle shake tests determined that the lowest concentration of foam agent to be used was approximately 1.5%. Compressed air generated foams tended to have low expansion ratios (10-19) with high water drainage. Blower air generated foams had higher foam expansion ratios (30-60) with lower water drainage. Foams produced within these ranges of expansion ratios are stable and potentially suitable for dust control. The different foam agents produce foams with different material properties. Results of testing eliminated two foam agents for future testing because they had poor expansion ratios. The remaining two foam agents, while having different foam properties, seem to have properties adequate for dust control. These material property tests can be used to classify foams for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. INTRODUCTION About one-half of U.S. underground coal is produced by longwall mining. This technique allows for mining high volumes of coal, producing significant amounts of coal mine dust. This can lead to the overexposures to longwall miners and possibly occupational respiratory diseases black lung and silicosis, which have no cure and can be disabling or fatal. The only method to avoid these occupational illnesses is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit for respirable coal mine dust is 1.5 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [1]. When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain an average concentration at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [2]. Respirable dust samples collected by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors for the five-year period from 2010 to 2014 found that 5.6% (53 of 943 respirable coal mine dust samples) of the longwall operators on the tailgate side exceeded the coal mine dust standard, and 4.3% (76 of 1768 samples) of the jacksetters exceeded the standard. If silica is present, the reduced standard is implemented, meaning that 11.4% (36 of 316 respirable coal mine samples analyzed for dust) of the jacksetters exceeded the reduced standard. Only 3.8% (18 of 478 samples) of the longwall operators on the tailgate side exceeded the reduced standard [3]. Had the 1.5 mg/m3 standard been in effect during this period, non-compliant samples would have been much higher. For example, over 15% of the samples collected at the tailgate shearer operator occupation exceeded the lower standard."

A contained nuclear explosion is proposed to produce a chimney of broken ore well below the water table. After the chimney is filled with water and reaches hydrostatic equilibrium, oxygen, under pressure, is introduced near the bottom of the mass of broken rock. The increase in solubility of oxygen at high hydrostatic pressure is sufficient to initiate the oxidation of the primary sulfides: chalcopyrite and pyrite. The oxidation and dissolution of these sulfides produces enough heat to increase the temperature of the ore and water in the chimney as much as 1000 to 150°C. The rate of dissolution of chalcopyrite becomes so rapid under these conditions that the rate of recovery is no longer limited by the rate of chalcopyrite dissolution, but by the degree of exposure and other factors. Means of solution control and distribution of oxygen in the chimney have been examined in some detail. A calculational model utilizing experimentally determined solubility rates is utilized to estimate the temperature rise in the chimney and the rate of copper recovery as a function of initial temperature, sulfide content of ore, size of sulfide particles, and fraction of sulfide exposed to solution.

The Jiboia heavy mineral sands deposit is a new discovery associated with the São Francisco River delta on the northern coast of Sergipe state. The identified resources are part of the much larger mineralized trend. Mineralization is hosted in paleodunes deposited on Holocene marine terraces (Fig. 1). The dunes are up to 30 m above sea level, and mineralization occur from 6 m above sea level upward. The main ore minerals constitute pseudorutile, ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite. This work presents a thorough characterization of the mineralogy and granulometric distribution of the Jiboia orebody.

Utilization of belt air in underground coal mines has been discussed extensively during the last decade. The Final Report of the Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining formed by the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 recommends research on leakage, use of booster fans, and escapeway safety. This paper discusses the role of ventilation modeling in evaluating primary escapeway pressurization in a three-entry development system to improve emergency escape in a coal mine using belt air. The intake entry of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Experimental Mine was pressurized using a 1.1-m (42-in.) diameter, 37 kW (50 hp) fan. The work details air movement in the simulated three-entry system and the resulting leakage patterns. Three mine ventilation software packages were compared to analyze their performance in predicting the airflows and leakage conditions with different fan settings. NIOSH researchers found that the measurement results correlated well with the results of modeling.

The effect of discontinuities on the fracturing and mechanical behavior of shale has been extensively investigated on a laboratory scale in previous works. It is well agreed that the lamination properties, including discontinuity and lamina properties, affect the behavior of shale. However, it is still unclear how the lamination properties are affecting the stability of the shale roof in an underground coal mine entry. This paper investigated the effect of lamination properties using the discrete element method on a mine-scale entry model as an extension to the previous work conducted on laboratory scale models.

Construction of Boston’s C11A1 Section of the Central Artery (I-93)/Tunnel(I-90) Project beneath the existing MBTA Red Line Subway at South Station required excavation to depths in excess of 33.5 m (110 ft) through permeable sand and gravel subject to almost 27.4 m (90 ft) of hydrostatic groundwater pressure. As tacked drift tunnel underpinning system was designed to provide positive support to the active station prior to mainline tunnel construction. As part of this system, a permeation grouting program was developed to facilitate tunnel excavation. This paper describes the design and implementation of the grouting program, in sit testing, and the overall performance of the grouted soil mass.

Numerous orphaned strip mines and old refuse piles scar the landscape, contributing to stream pollution and degradation of the natural environment. Field experiments to reclaim acidic surface-mined spoil and refuse banks with fly ash from bituminous coal-fired powerplants were conducted at several sites in West Virginia. Fly ash served as a neutralizing agent and soil amendment, permitting vegetation of waste lands and disposal of large quantities of ash. Reclamation of land by this method is estimated to cost about $300 per acre of leveled site, depending upon the topography of the land and quality and availability of the fly ash.

Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The U.S. Department of the Interior has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and western state governments to identify and prioritize these sites on Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service administered lands. This presentation will discuss the accomplishments we have made to date to clean up inactive and abandoned mine sites, focusing primarily on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

For sulfide minerals, the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase is an influencing factor for separation by flotation. Klassen and Mokrousov(I:217l distinguish three stages of oxygen adsorption; namely, reversible adsorption, activated adsorption and, finally, surface oxidation. While contraversial, limited adsorption of oxygen is believed to improve the interfacial reactivity between collector and mineral. Intensive surface oxidation of sulfide minerals usually results in unsatisfactory flotation with collectors of the xanthate type. The influence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase has received consideration for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcocite, and covellite(2,3,4,5,6). However, the nature of surface oxidation products of sulfide minerals has received very limited investigation(6,7). Lightly oxidized galena promotes the adsorptive reaction of surfactant (xanthate or dixanthogen). Tolun and Kitchener(8) state that limited interaction occurs between galena and xanthate under relatively reducing conditions. And, that exposure to oxygen raises the electrochemical potential of the galena to that required for reaction with xanthate or dixanthogen. In the latter condition, the galena has an "effective flotation surface". On the other hand, intensive oxidation of galena reduces the chemical reaction with xanthate collectors (9) . Complete flotation with xanthate-type surfactants with increasing oxygen content in the water phase has been determined to have the following sulfide mineral sequence(3): galena, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and arseno-pyrite. The work of Cusack(4) suggests that some threshold amount of oxygen is necessary for flotation to occur, but heavy oxidation hinders flotation with xanthates. According to Tolun and Kitchener(8) catalytic oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen occurs. The effect of dissolved ions present in plant water on the flotation of phosphate ore from central Florida was investigated. Of the three most abundant ions, namely Ca++, Mg++ and SO4--, calcium ions were the most detrimental in the flotation of phosphate with sodium oleate collector. In one feed, a 10 ppm concentration of Ca++ ions reduced the BPL recovery from 86% to 46% whereas in the other a 40 ppm concentration lowered the recovery from 90% to 52%. The effect of Na2C03, NaHC03, Zeolite and EDTA to remove ca++ ions from water and hence improve apatite flotation was also studied.

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. Virtually all industries use sulphur in some form. About half of the world's production is used in the production of fertilizers. Sulphur is produced in one form or another in over sixty countries in the world. The major producing countries, in order of importance, are: U.S.A., Canada, U.S.S.R., Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, and Spain. Canada is the largest exporter of sulphur presently supplying about 30% of the world elemental sulphur export trade. It has held this position since 1968. World sulphur resources are virtually unlimited. Future world competition will come from Iraq and other Middle East countries as well as Central and South America.

Significant quantities of waste rock at abandoned uranium mine (AUM) sites in the western United States require removal from steep slopes exceeding 45 degrees in remote locations. This prevents the use of traditional excavation equipment and poses significant challenges for safe, effective material removal. A pilot study was conducted using a spider excavator to demonstrate the feasibility of removing waste rock and transporting it to areas where conventional equipment could be employed. The spider excavator was evaluated for its effectiveness in excavation, material movement and control, container usage, dust mitigation, and ensuring human health and environmental safety. The study established constructability and engineering parameters for implementing spider excavators in these challenging environments. Key outcomes include the preservation of existing vegetation, improved waste movement control, and enhanced safety measures for workers, nearby residents, and the environment.

The process of grinding mill quality assurance brings with it associated truths and myths. When the mill quality assurance process took its first great steps forward in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they were in response to the conditions existing, in our industry, at those times. In the late 1990s, we are faced with different conditions, and problems, and need fresh solutions. Yet the system developed for the early 1980s has produced no new approaches for the late 1990s, becoming instead more hardened and entrenched. This lack of development and actual resistance to research is now costing the industry significant amounts of money in late start-ups and useless scrap loss.

"While coal fueling China's economic growth it has already been causing severe pollution and amounts of CO2 emission. How to make deep reductions in carbon emission is not only a huge challenge for the greatest consumer of coal, but also a revolution for China’s coal industry. The paper explores how to shrink CO2 emissions during the lifetime of coal. The paper points out that increase of coal mine efficiency and productivity, green mining, utilization of coal mine methane and environment-friendly disposal of coal gangue can reduce CO2 during coal mining; coal preparation and coal by wire can decrease CO2 during coal preparation and transportation; improving combustion efficiency, CO2 capture and storage (CCS) and coal transformation can lessen CO2 during coal utilization. The paper also points out that Circular Economy Park is a practical way to develop a low carbon economy for coal industry. An econometric model for total coal industry and each sector are constructed to measure carbon emissions based on CO2 equivalent emissions, then with detailed calculations, based on potential greenhouse-gas emission's reduction, a most likely low carbon roadmap of China's coal industry is depicted with scenario analysis method.Introduction Global warming poses a profound threat to humanity and the natural world and is one of the most serious challenges humankind has ever faced. According to the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global surface temperature increased 273.89 ± 273.33K during the 20th century (IPCC 2007). Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases have caused most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of the 20th century (United States National Academy of Sciences 2008), and CO2 is the most important cause of global warming. In 2005, CO2 contributed 76% of global greenhouse gas emissions, CH4 contributed approximately 16%, N2O contributed approximately 6% and the combined F-gases contributed approximately 2% (IEA 2010). Among the many human activities that produce greenhouse gases, energy use is by far the largest source of emissions. Since 1870, CO2 emissions from fuel combustion have risen exponentially (IEA 2009). Of the three types of fossil fuels - coal, natural gas and petroleum - coal constituted only a quarter of the world total primary energy consumption in 2007. The situation is even more critical in China than in the rest of the world, as energy-intensive industrial production is growing rapidly, and large coal reserves exist in combination with limited reserves of other energy sources. The development and production of the coal industry provide stability in China's economic growth. There are more than 7000 coal enterprises in China; the coal enterprises are the main contributor to China's ""economic miracle""."
