The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, conducted studies to recover phosphate from four dolomitic southern Florida deposits not currently mined. The samples contained 5.8 to 10.2 percent P205 and 1.7 to 1.8 percent MgO. Chemical analyses of sized fractions indicated that no pebble concentrate (plus 1.2 mm) could be produced from these samples. A scheme was developed that consisted of desliming, grinding, scrubbing, and redesliming the ore to produce a flotation feed. Conventional one-step fatty acid-fuel oil batch flotation tests on the samples resulted in concentrates containing 29.0 to 31.3 percent P205 at flotation recoveries ranging from 72.4 to 96.1 percent of the flotation feed. The MgO content of the concentrates ranged from 0.47 to 1.36 percent. Continuous flotation of the Manatee No. 2 sample indicated that commercial-grade phosphate concentrates analyzing 31.3 percent P205 and 0.55 percent MgO could be produced with a flotation recovery of 89.9 percent. The MgO content of concentrates obtained from the Manatee No. I and Hardee samples was 1.20 to 1.36 percent, respectively. Leaching with aqueous SO2 reduced the MgO content of these phosphate concentrates to 0.5 and 0.8 percent, but with a concomitant loss in phosphate recovery.

And a new generation of safety culture experts are telling mining companies how to use it: It is a situation that is still too common in the mining industry: the latest personal protective gear is in place. The safety rules are known and followed. And then, in a moment of inattention or carelessness, a mistake is made and someone gets hurt or killed. Common wisdom claims that such accidents are impossible to eliminate entirely. Mining is dangerous, and some miners will always be hurt and killed. An increasing number of mine safety experts, however, reject the common wisdom. A year with zero mining deaths is possible, they say; with the use of one of the newest weapons to the mining industry in the safety war: the concept of safety culture. Safety culture refers to the set of attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values that influence safety in the work environment. It is also sometimes called the way an organization behaves when no one is watching. Robert Peters, of the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), describes safety culture this way: ?It?s what?s believed on a day-to-day basis. For example, if a miner sees a workplace hazard and he truly believes that his boss wants him to identify the hazard and bring it to the company?s attention, that would be an example of a positive safety culture.?

An integral part of site investigations for shafts and underground workings should be hydrogeologic evaluations of the need for and method of ground-water control. Such investigations should include: 1. Classification of the problem by aquifer type. 2. Integration of other site investigations with hydrogeologic programs, including assessment of the need for water control. 3. Planning and conduct of aquifer tests tailored to the aquifer situation. 4. Evaluation of pumping requirements to achieve water control objectives. 5. Scheduling of dewatering for optimum results and costs. 6. Evaluation of environmental impacts of pumpage and water discharge. 7. Planning of operational monitoring for program modification and liability limitation. Early hydrogeologic involvement can result in avoiding unnecessary duplication in site investigations.

The discovery of tungsten-bearing quartz outcroppings in Vance County, N. C., by the Hamme brothers in 1942, made international news in the mining industry and was, in fact, one of the major ore discoveries made in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Operations began at the Hamme mine in 1942, but after 16 years of successful operation, the mine was closed down in 1958 under adverse market conditions. By that time, it had produced nearly 20 million lbs of metallic tungsten. Because of the square-set timber mining method then in use, mine operating expenses were high, actually representing 78% of the total operating expenses at the property. In timber work alone, 160 men were employed. Approximately 500,000 bd ft of timber were placed monthly at a direct supply cost of $1.00 per ton of ore mined. Late in 1959, following a slightly improved position in the tungsten market, company management decided that, by changing the mining method, the operation could be economically feasible. The major premise in this decision was that a reduction of from 25 to 30% of the mining costs could be achieved by the conversion of the mining method from square-sets to horizontal cut and fill. Reopening of the mine began in February 1960, Full production has now been reached and overall mine productivity has been doubled.

The Illinois State Geological Survey added Minerals Processing to its capabilities in 1966. Subsequently, the Minerals Processing Team and several Geologists collectively thought what neither would have thought of separately. The results included a number of projects. discussed here are: 1) The Utilization of the Fines from Kitty Litter as a Bonding Agent for Iron Ore Pellets; 2) Separating Plant Waste from a Commercial Silica Sand Producer into two marketable products, including a closely sized Silica Sand; 3) Marketable Feldspar Sand and Silica Sand from Dune Sands near the Kankakee River; and 4) A Method for Making Metallurgical Grade Fluorspar more desirable as Blast Furnace (Steel) Feed.

The disposition of world mineral resources is such that a vital need exists for both the most efficient development of existing resources and the rapid disclosure of as-yet undiscovered resources. The technological developments described in this report are directed primarily toward the acceleration and increased efficiency of mineral-resource exploration program. In the past decade the use of computers in the mineral industry has grown exponentially. Most computer applications in mineral exploration are designed to be implemented either before or after data collection. Few, if any, computer applications are designed to be used during the collection of data. One major reason for the lack of development of computer applications in this area is that comunications links do not exist between computing systems and the remote areas that host mineral-deposit exploration programs.

Mining activity in South America is a growing enterprise. One of difficulties found in many areas of the South American continent, especially in north Chile and south Peru, is the shortage of water supply. In order to overcome this difficulty some mining companies proposed to transport the water from Pacific Ocean up to the mountains. This can be accomplished by the use of stainless steel pipelines, but this is a cost prohibitive solution and is also subject to severe pitting corrosion in a saline environment. The use of mild steel may be a lower cost solution than stainless steel as the material of construction for pipelines but it is subject to corrosion anyway. The corrosion in this case can be internal or external corrosion although cathodic protection as well preventive maintenance usually is enough to mitigate external corrosion without the need to shut down the pipeline. The same is not true about the prevention of internal corrosion. It is not practical, sometimes not even possible, shutdown a pipeline to carry out an inspection and fix sections where potential failures are detected. It is possible avoid corrosion caused by sea water within the mild steel pipelines by applying a proper chemical program designed to virtually eliminate dissolved oxygen in the water commonly called deaeration.1 This type of treatment obviously involves additional capital investment since it requires the construction of one deaerator with the first pumping station and additional equipment at each point where the water can come into contact with oxygen. Deaerators will increase operational costs and subsequent injection of chemicals will be required in the case of multiple degasification facilities thus increasing the consumption of chemicals. grams based on oxygen scavengers, the objective of the present study is to develop a new water treatment capable of preventing mild steel corrosion in aerated sea water. Southern Arizona has one of the world's principal concentrations of copper ore bodies. Twenty miles south of Tucson, close to the Mexican border at Sahuarita in Pima County, is the Twin Buttes mine. In mid-1973, the Anaconda Company and American Metals Climax Incorporated (AMAX) established a 50-50 partnership to operate and expand the Twin Buttes property. Anamax Mining Company was established as the operating company for this joint venture. The production from the Twin Buttes mine is shared between the two partners who market independently. A major expansion of the Twin Buttes operation has included an accelerated stripping programrne for the pit, an expansion of the sulphide concentrator, the construction of an oxide leach plant and a 57 MW diesel generating power station. Part of this major expansion, the large tonnage oxide processing plant was brought on stream in 1975 and is now close to design capacity. The "mine to market gap" has been closed by producing high-purity copper cathodes at the mine site from oxide ore reserves. By using a hydrometallurgical process route, copper production is possible with negligible effects on the environment.

A new system for leaching many types of ores has recently been developed on a commercial basis by J and J Research and Development, Inc. of Hanover, New Mexico. This revolutionary new leaching system consists principally of three new leaching reactors; viz, (1) a large, air-agitates, column-like reactor for leaching crushed ores that is constructed in an underground environment and has the inherent ability to do a very efficient job of leaching, (2) a vat-like, air-agitated vessel for leaching an rinsing finely ground ores and , (3) an air-agitated copper precipitation column that is built underground and utilizes an inexpensive dense or heavy scrap iron as a copper precipitant. Each of these new reactors have been used in a large leaching plant near Hanover, New Mexico.

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. Optimization of a three-dimensional (3D) underground stope layout is complex given the number of variables and constraints to consider, such as the stope size. Determination of the appropriate stope size in stope layout optimization problems is a complex process that must consider several factors including placement of infrastructure and development, production scheduling, and equipment selection. An inappropriate stope layout can result in unrealistic expectations for a production schedule, consequently negatively affecting the derived economic value. Therefore, this paper used a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) to evaluate the effect of stope size on the stope layout economic value (SLEV) for a synthetic Platreef mineral deposit planned for extraction using sublevel open-stoping. The results showed that generally as the stope size increases, the SLEV decreases. This aligns with practical mining because larger stope sizes have a higher chance of incurring more dilution which reduces economic value, while smaller stope sizes enable more flexible extraction where unprofitable blocks can be left unmined as waste, thus increasing the derived SLEV.

When the original water-only cyclone patents were established in the 1950?s, the supplies of low cost oil and natural gas were abundant and low selling prices for metallurgical and steam coal provided little incentive for developing more sophisticated coal cleaning systems. Bituminous coal sold for less than $5.00 per ton, and in this period many domestic coal producers discarded to the slurry pond the coal finer than 0.5-mm. For many producers, the selling price would not permit the recovery of the capital and operating costs required for dewatering and drying the fine coal. Water-only Cyclones Clean Fine Metallurgical Coal The first broad interest in the water-only cyclone became evident in the mid- 19601s, and though some work was done on coarser coals, investigators were particularly interested in cleaning coal finer than 0.5-mm. Flotation was the only fine coal cleaning method that was broadly accepted, but short-comings were recognized and investigators were looking for an effective fine coal cleaning device or system. Because of the greater market value and the need for reducing pyritic sulfur in metallurgical coals, much of the development work of the 1960's was done on coking coals.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize and discuss a variety of site specific conditions which are typically evaluated as part of the engineering design process for heap leach pads, solution control ponds, and associated facilities. The following sections will focus primarily on the topographic, climatologic, hydrologic, and geotechnical evaluations critical to selection of heap leach sites, and selection of a preferred heap leach configuration or method. Other important considerations in the design of a heap leach project, including evaluation of ore properties and leachability, pregnant solution processing requirements, spent ore neutralization/disposal requirements, and other anticipated reclamation requirements are beyond the scope of this paper are not addressed in any detail.

The separation of liquids from granular materials has been widely studied by a number of: investigators over a period of years in an effort to more fully understand the physical phenomenon which occurs. Liquid may be removed from solids, or partially removed, by gravity separation, mechanical separation' or heat drying. Mechanical separation is advantageous when compared to heat drying principally from a cost saving standpoint and also on certain materials which are heat sensitive. It is realized however that mechanical separation of liquids has certain practical limitations. In order to evaluate the efficiency of mechanical separation and predict the extent of, liquid removal, it is first necessary to study the forces which hold the liquid to the solids. From a very practical observation using gravity drainage, it is soon obvious that a pile of coarse solids will drain faster and retain less liquid than a pile of finely divided solids of the same material. For commercial operations it is important to estimate the residual liquid which will remain after a mechanical separation. Batel (1) explored the various quantities of liquid present in the interstices of the bulk granular material. From his work and other authors which he has correlated in one of his recent papers, various formulas are now available which permit an empirical relationship to be developed showing residual moisture versus mechanical separating forces.

The department of the Interior is a federation or holding company of several fiercely independent bureaus which have either jurisdiction or expertise - or both - in a wide range of environmental fields. Each bureau is an advocate for its own concerns and an enforcer of its own mandates. This can be confusing to the company operating in the field. I will try to explain our concerns, help you see where we are "coming from," and give you some insight as to how we can help you. Other speakers have stressed the environmental concerns and site selection factors for uranium wastes so I will focus on the concerns of the Department of the Interior and some of the assistance we can give you in this area People are more aware and more concerned about environmental factors now than they used to be. Thus the past decade has brought about an evolution in both siting and design of uranium mill tailings ponds. Site selection criteria used to be simple - find a tract of land as near to the ore supply as possible with enough space and suitable topography for the expected volume of wastes. Site selections in the past have left a legacy of problems to be corrected - radioactive wastes on stream banks and in floodplains, mill wastes in and near established communities, and unprotected wastes subject to constant erosion. This is no longer acceptable environmentally or socially to a newly aware and concerned public. (Series of 30-35 slides showing uranium mine and mill wastes in Western United States. The interaction of Bacillus polymyxa and minerals such as hematite, corundum and quartz resulted in significant surface chemical changes, both on the cell surfaces and on the interacted oxide minerals. After such treatment, quartz was rendered relatively more hydrophobic, while hematite and corundum were rendered more hydrophilic. Biopretreatment was observed to be beneficial in the separation of silica from hematite and alumina by both selective flocculation and flotation. The possible role of bacterial adhesion and metabilites in the biobeneficiation process is illustrated.

Ground movements associated with high extraction underground coal mining, such as pillar retreat and longwall, are sometimes large enough to disrupt the ground water regime as well as damage buildings and other surface structures. A U.S. Department of Energy/Bureau of Mines- sponsored subsidence study currently underway at Kitt Energy Corporation's Kitt No. 1 Mine near Philippi (Barbour County), West Virginia has provided an opportunity to monitor the ground water response above a mine panel during both developmental and pillar retreat mining. The initial findings concerning ground water effects presented in this paper indicate that total extraction mining produced significant water level declines in deep-lying strata but had little effect on water bevels at shallower depths.

Ramifide conveyor transport of the biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is simulated by Petri nets. There are 6 longwalls with accidental output. 12 belts, and 5 transfer bunkers at this mine. It is necessary to coordinate transport links for recon- structed conveyor system. Many tasks were solved by dynamic simulation, such as estimation of transport lateness, influence of transfer bunkers on an unevenness of total coal flow, maximum filling of each bunker, maximum time of main conveyor refusal, co-ordination of unloading for dependent bunkers, choice of main conveyor. The problem of mine-wide conveyor transport animation for dispatcher is formulated in reference to mine "Komsomolets". OBJECT OF SIMULATION The biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is situated on a south part of Kusnetski coal basin (West Siberia). One mines about 20.000 tons of coal out of flat seams by 2.2-4.5 m thickness in a day. There are 6 fully- mechanized longwalls by output 720- 3600 tons in a shift in mine. Coal haulage to surface is carried out by 12 belts having 1.6 - 4.3 km length. For a smoothing over un- evenness of coal flows 5 transfer bunkers to 300 tons were intro- duced. The Marlin deposit is a low sulphidation Au-Ag, epithermal system, with reserves of more than five million ounces gold equivalent. Marlin was discovered in December 1998, after a nine months grassroots exploration program in western Guatemala, focused on volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre. Before the Marlin discovery, several gold prospects were found along an east-west corridor of approximately 70 kilometers long, associated to regional faulting systems. The deposit is hosted in faults, within Tertiary andesitic rocks and bedded volcano-sediments. Host-rocks are argillized closer to the surface and propyllitized at depth. Mineralization occurs in multi-stage quartz stockworks and breccia veins.

The exploitation of mineral deposits for economical recovery of the contained minerals has many aspects differing from other industrial or manufacturing operations. However, generally accepted principles of good organization and management applicable to industrial plants are similarly effective for mineral processing plants. A more detailed coverage of organizational structures and management techniques than is possible in this section can be obtained from many good books devoted wholly to these subjects. A few of the more readily available examples are included in the general references at the beginning of this section. The field of mineral processing encompass a wide variety of minerals, processes, flowsheets, equipment, and end products. Mineral deposits, mines, and related beneficiation plants are found in all parts of the globe, often in remote locations with no nearby support for supplies and maintenance. Available labor is frequently unskilled, sometimes primitive, and often untrained without machine and hand tools or heavy equipment experience. Such situations call for well- planned and conducted training programs covering the full range of mining-type job skills. Climates can range from arctic to tropical and from arid to extremes of rain or snow, and the mine and plant sites can be almost anywhere. However, it is often possible and sometimes necessary for
