Alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6] is one of the important nonbauxitic resources for aluminum in U.S.A. The major gangue material associated with a unite ore body is quartz. Experimental results indicate that oleic acid flotation of alunite is quite effective in upgrading the ore. The flotation chemistry of the alunite/oleate system has been investigated using various techniques such as: hallimond tube flotation response, measurement of adsorption density using I4C labeled oleated, electrokinetic measurements, infrared spectral studies, contact angle measurements and thermochemical measurements using an isothermal microcalorimeter. Alunite has been found to float readily with oleate in the pH range 4-10.5 and its flotation response is enhanced at higher temperatures. The PZC of alunite has been determined to be at pH 7.2 ± 0.15 which agrees with what would be predicted from solution chemistry and from the flotation response with physically adsorbed collectors. Infrared spectra show a specific peak in the range 1585-1600 cm-1 which has been attributed to the formation of an aluminum oleate surface species. Both adsorption density measurements and infrared spectra indicate that during adsorption multilayers are formed. The heat of adsorption of oleate on alunite has been found to be endothermic and of the order of 4-6 KJ/ mole.

Pima Mining Company has recently completed their expansion tripling the plant capacity to 18,000 tons per day and now is in the process off expanding to 30,000 tons per day with completion scheduled for the summer of 1967. This paper briefly discusses the additions to the mining department and support areas with a more detailed report on the complete new crushing plant and additions to the concentrator. The crushing plant includes a 54-inch gyratory crusher, three 7-foot standard and seven 7-foot short head crushers along with necessary screens, feeders, and conveyor belts to produce a minus 1/2-inch rod mill feed. The concentrator consists of ten milling sections, each containing one 10-foot by 16-foot rod and two 10.5-foot by 13-foot ball mills, classification is done with cyclones. Pulp from each section is floated in 50 cells of 66-inch Fagergren flotation machines to produce a rougher concentrate which is cleaned in six stages of Denver cleaners to produce a final concentrate The various mill products are thickened with disposal made in conventional manner. The generation of low cost power is but one phase of the TVA program for regional development. During the 36 years since TVA began, growth in its generation of electric power has necessitated a shift from a predominantly hydroelectric power system to a combination steam and hydroelectric system. The addition of steam-electric power plants to TVA's generating system was necessitated by the rapid increase in the traditional and defense demands for electric power in the 80,000-square-mile area served by TVA, the need to firm up the hydroelectric power, and the fact that all available sites for sizeable hydroelectric projects had been developed. At present TVA owns and operates 40 power plants--29 hydroelectric and 11 steam-electric plants. The total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plants is 3,105,430 kw, and the capacity of the steam plants is 13,951,135 kw. This provides a total generating capacity of 17,056,565 kw for the plants operated by TVA. Individual capacity of the 112 hydroelectric units ranges from 10,000 to 67,500 kw, and the individual capacity of the steam-electric units now in operation ranges from 60,000 to 950,000 kw. In addition to this generating capacity, TVA distributes the power from 6 U. S. Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric plants on the Cumberland River. These plants contribute an additional 725,000 kw. Also, under an agreement with the Aluminum Company of America, TVA directs the stream flows and generation of their 423,715-kw system on Tennessee River tributaries and shares with Alcoa in the increased generation resulting from this coordinated operation.

In 1956 the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created a "Coal Research Board" in the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries. Over the years through amendments to the original legislation, the scope of authority for research has been expanded from the narrow area of improving and increasing the utilization of coal to covering all aspects of coal technology and any other area of interest which would be of value to the coal industry. In January of 1964, the Board commenced a vigorous program using appropriated funds and funds donated by the coal industry to finance a research program devoted to seeking solutions to the mine drainage problem. A review of published literature on the treatment of mine drainage indicated that much work done up to that point in time concerned only the mechanism of mine drainage formation and theoretical chemistry. Very few applied, developmental, or engineering studies had been devoted to finding practical solutions to the problem of polluted waters being discharged from active or abandoned mines. Projects were therefore undertaken on a wide variety of more utilitarian approaches. This paper will discuss briefly some of the pollution abatement approaches which have been funded by the Coal Research Board of this State, and will describe in some detail a multistage flash evaporator treatment plant now under construction.

White Pine Copper Company began operating a plant designed to recover copper matte particles from its discarded reverberatory furnace slags in April, 1972. Seasonal operation, generally the months of April through November, continued through October, 1974, shutting down due to feed exhaustion. White Pine reverberatory furnace slags contained economically recoverable amounts of copper for a variety of reasons. Among them: 1. White Pine concentrates yield extremely high matte grades (65+% Cu) and viscous slags. The viscous slags hinder matte settling causing matte "prill" entrapment in the slag 2. White Pine's total refined copper output is accomplished through fire refining requiring special techniques for impurity removal, especially small amounts of nickel introduced from purchased pyrite and chalcopyrite fluxes. These special techniques result in high-copper slags, refractory to smelting, being reintroduced into the reverberatory furnace. 3. Furnace bottom build-ups resulting in mechanical matte entrapment through the formation of "dams" hindering matte flow. 4. Occasional concentrate fluxing and furnace atmosphere control problems.

"The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted.INTRODUCTIONDynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the sudden failures of rock in a mining or quarrying environment. Failure occurs when the rock’s critical bearing capacity has been exceeded and the rock fails energetically through the outward expulsion of rubblized material (Peng, 2008). These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of reported cases through the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Much research has been devoted to the prevention of these events. The effects of overburden depth and stiffness, mine design, mining practices, and in situ stresses are well documented (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Brauner, 1994; Campoli and Kertis, 1987; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Lawson et al., 2016b; Mark, 2016; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008). Despite these significant advancements in coal mine ground control, however, events continue to occur. Proactive risk mitigation remains an important research area. "Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.1 Mt/a (4.5 million stpy) of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this article and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning, and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution.Project overviewPeña Colorada is a mining company that produces about 30 percent of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in Fig. 1. Technological innovationsMost mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore.” Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that improved many aspects of the mine plan. The Peña Colorada block model has undergone 3 expansions to reflect additional information not available in the past. The model has expanded to the East and Southwest. The latest model expansion increased the total number of benches to 98 as a result of positive exploration results. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. The Arizona Legislature is currently in the process of considering mined land reclamation legislation in the 1994 legislative session. A bipartisan legislative study committee has drafted proposed mined land legislation. The committee has attempted to craft legislation that is appropriate for the unique conditions in Arizona. Existing Arizona and federal laws and regulations extensively regulate the environmental performance of mines in the state to protect public health, safety and the environment. The proposed mined land reclamation legislation does not replace or duplicate these statutory provisions relating to environmental protection. Instead, the purpose of the proposed legislation is to provide for the reclamation of land that is being mined and to fill the gap in existing laws by requiring the reclamation of land that currently is being mined or that has been mined since 1986 to provide for future land use. The legislation would require an operator to submit a reclamation plan describing the exploration operations, mining operations, post-mining land use and the proposed reclamation measures for review by a state agency. Financial assurance also would be required in an amount such that a third party could complete the approved reclamation measures. Arizona's mined land reclamation legislation would recognize Arizona's leading role in hard rock mining and emphasize the mining industry's economic importance to Arizona and the nation. Because mining operations necessarily require disturbing the surface of the earth to extract valuable minerals, reclamation requirements would be adapted to different conditions and would vary depending on site-specific conditions and on the commodity being mined. The current proposal does not identify the state agency that will administer the mined land reclamation program and approve reclamation plans, substantial changes to plans, and transfers of reclamation plans to other operators.

The vegetation of Mediterranean ecosystems is distinguished by its resistance to adverse environmental conditions, and that is the reason for examining the possibility of growing species of this flora in waste disposal sites (WDSs). The survival and growth of vegetation established at a waste disposal site is dependent to a large extent on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the material used in the final soil cover. In the Ano Liossia WDS, where extensive remediation work is under way, three areas were examined, which met certain criteria in relation to the age of the underlying waste and the existence of impermeable material in the final soil cover. Laboratory analyses have determined soil parameters and nutrient and heavy metal content. Alongside this, at all three sites a network has been installed to monitor the qualitative characteristics of the gaseous phase of the soil cover material. The results showed the existence of a soil material containing few nutrients and the prevalence of oxygen-poor conditions, accompanied by large concentrations of CH4, CO2 and H2S, at depths of up to about one meter.

Smelterville Flats in Idaho's Silver Valley has been designated as a Superfund site due to metals contamination resulting from the use of the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene river as a tailings impoundment earlier in this century. Tailings average in excess of 4% lead and zinc. Selective mining of highly contaminated zones is being studied as one of several possible remediation strategies. The first step towards remediation is the examination of the stratigraphic, geochemical and spatial characteristics of the site. These characteristics are related to appropriate sampling protocols and exploratory sample grid design. Special problems involved in the geostatistical analysis of tailings are emphasized.

With the growing exportation of coal from North America to the Pacific Rim countries and Europe, has come an increasing awareness of the need to determine economically optimized amounts of incombustibles (ash and moisture contents) for the shipped product. Despite the fact that demand bas caused a steady improvement in selling price, particularly for thermal coals, growing production and transportation costs have compelled producers to keep a sharp eye open for ways and means of minimizing the latter since this probably represents the greatest single potential for making savings. Consequently the Coal Industry has become acutely aware of the economic ramifications of eliminating moisture in particular, thereby producing further saving in the cost of transportation of product from the mine to the consumer. There is, however, a lower limit to which dewatering or drying can be taken and this relates to dustiness which is a function of the characteristics of the coal and the methods used for handling and storage during trans-shipment. Overdrying can lead to serious dust losses and difficulties in handling particularly if the coal contains a large proportion of fines. The ways and means for achieving this "happy medium" of optimization in moisture removal are seemingly undergoing gradual modification largely assisted by the following factors. a) Improvement in effectiveness of coal dewatering and drying equipment. b) Improvement in operational availability and utilization of the equipment. c) The development of surfactants, polymer flocculants and other agents which in many cases can be almost tailor made to suit specific applications.

At our annual meeting in St, Louis, Mo. in February 1961, we presented a comprehensive paper (No. 61-B-22) on the subject of "Blending and Handling of Materials for Agglomeration". In that paper you will find a discussion on the difference between "blending" and "mixing". With regard to "blending" we brought out the facts of its usefulness for the preparation o materials in an agglomerated mass to attain controlled chemical and physical uniformity. "Mixing" was discredited as not being useful for the attainment of uniformity of any kind.

Extraction and processing constitute an important area in the metallurgy of molybdenum. Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) production is one of the most important stages in molybdenum production. In this study, the effects of different furnace types on MoO3 production were investigated by using molybdenum concentrate as a raw material obtained during the enrichment of copper ores. Preliminary experiments have been made using a chamber type furnace, and a transition to a pilot-scale has been carried out with rotary kiln experiments. The effects of a different time and atmospheric conditions on MoO3 roasting kinetics were investigated by experimental studies conducted in the temperature range of 500–650°C. It was determined that the optimum temperature and time for sulfur (S) removal was 625°C and 180 min in the studies carried out in the rotary kiln, and it was determined that 0.61%S content was reached with an average removal efficiency of 98%. The activation energy in these sets was calculated as 89.519 kJ/mol.

The effect of some of the reagents, namely hydrocarbon oil, Syntex (sulfated coconut oil surfactant), pine oil, sodium silicate, and lime, used at the Climax mill on the recovery and grade of molybdenite and gangue minerals has been investigated experimentally using factorially designed test approach in the laboratory. The results of the investigation are presented in two dimensional plots. The lower additions of lime (equivalent to a pH of 8 to 8.5) were desirable for maximizing recovery subject to constraints on grade. Higher additions of pine oil improved recovery, but only at the expense of grade. A mathematical model of the objectives of an operating plant was formulated and optimum reagent conditions obtained.

Bismuth, one of the heavier chemical elements, is a pinkish metalloid that is chemically related to antimony. It is a byproduct of lead and tungsten extraction and, to a lesser extent, of copper and tin extraction. Antimony is a metalloid and less heavy chemical element, an extraction coproduct of metals such as lead, silver and gold. While both bismuth and antimony are metalloids, their major uses are as chemical compounds. A critical path approach is presented for the problem of mine ventilation net- works where regulators and fans are employed to control the airflow distribution which is preassigned. The problem is a classic one which arises in mine ventilation planning. By identifying the analogy between the network for controlled flow and that for CPPI, the applications of the well known CPM technique to the ventilation network problem become straight- forward. The mathematical formulation of the problem is presented and the solutions are illustrated with examples. The effect of booster fans on the total air power consumed in a ventilation network are also discussed.

Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. Information is also presented concerning design standards and recommended construction procedures

This paper summarizes and evaluates data on mine subsidence ground movements and associated damage for houses in Illinois. Based on the data collected, the response of homes to subsidence ground movements is expressed in terms of repair costs. A damage criteria is then proposed that relates the ground movements and damage levels. The data were collected as part of a comprehen¬sive study performed for the Illinois Abandoned ?Lined Lands Reclamation Council, A -M-RC, by the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Illinois, and probably will be published in late 1934 by the council. The study concentrated its efforts on surface ground movements and the effects to houses over abandoned room and pillar mines. The resultant surface subsidences are commonly dish or bowl shaped and are termed sags. Method of Analysis The steps in analysis used to arrive at the proposed damage criteria are: 1. Canvas and rap subsidence damage in houses, 2. Assess the associated ground movements, 3. Estimate the damage repair cost, 4. Develop a damage/repair level classifica¬tion, 5. Correlate the associated ground movement, damage/repair level and home construction type, 6. Propose a damage criteria.

Exploration of the Big Island trona beds by Stauffer Chemical Company started early in 1959. During the intervening time, Stauffer Chemical Company of Wyoming has developed a Large trona mine in this southwestern Wyoming area and has increased the over-all production of soda ash from natural sources by nearly one-half million tons per year. The trona, which is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate mineral, lies some 800 feet into the sedimentary rocks of the Green River formation. Present production is approximately 850,000 tons per year being extracted by means of a room-and-pillar mining system. Conventional coal mining equipment is used with some modification to accommodate local conditions. The mined and crushed ore is hoisted to the surface and processed in an on-site refinery. Refined soda ash is shipped to widely separated locations in covered hopper railraod cars. Construction in progress at Stauffer's plant will double the present capacity.
