"The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted.INTRODUCTIONDynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the sudden failures of rock in a mining or quarrying environment. Failure occurs when the rock’s critical bearing capacity has been exceeded and the rock fails energetically through the outward expulsion of rubblized material (Peng, 2008). These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of reported cases through the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Much research has been devoted to the prevention of these events. The effects of overburden depth and stiffness, mine design, mining practices, and in situ stresses are well documented (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Brauner, 1994; Campoli and Kertis, 1987; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Lawson et al., 2016b; Mark, 2016; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008). Despite these significant advancements in coal mine ground control, however, events continue to occur. Proactive risk mitigation remains an important research area. The Arizona Legislature is currently in the process of considering mined land reclamation legislation in the 1994 legislative session. A bipartisan legislative study committee has drafted proposed mined land legislation. The committee has attempted to craft legislation that is appropriate for the unique conditions in Arizona. Existing Arizona and federal laws and regulations extensively regulate the environmental performance of mines in the state to protect public health, safety and the environment. The proposed mined land reclamation legislation does not replace or duplicate these statutory provisions relating to environmental protection. Instead, the purpose of the proposed legislation is to provide for the reclamation of land that is being mined and to fill the gap in existing laws by requiring the reclamation of land that currently is being mined or that has been mined since 1986 to provide for future land use. The legislation would require an operator to submit a reclamation plan describing the exploration operations, mining operations, post-mining land use and the proposed reclamation measures for review by a state agency. Financial assurance also would be required in an amount such that a third party could complete the approved reclamation measures. Arizona's mined land reclamation legislation would recognize Arizona's leading role in hard rock mining and emphasize the mining industry's economic importance to Arizona and the nation. Because mining operations necessarily require disturbing the surface of the earth to extract valuable minerals, reclamation requirements would be adapted to different conditions and would vary depending on site-specific conditions and on the commodity being mined. The current proposal does not identify the state agency that will administer the mined land reclamation program and approve reclamation plans, substantial changes to plans, and transfers of reclamation plans to other operators.

"Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.1 Mt/a (4.5 million stpy) of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this article and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning, and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution.Project overviewPeña Colorada is a mining company that produces about 30 percent of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in Fig. 1. Technological innovationsMost mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore.” Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that improved many aspects of the mine plan. The Peña Colorada block model has undergone 3 expansions to reflect additional information not available in the past. The model has expanded to the East and Southwest. The latest model expansion increased the total number of benches to 98 as a result of positive exploration results. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. Extraction and processing constitute an important area in the metallurgy of molybdenum. Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) production is one of the most important stages in molybdenum production. In this study, the effects of different furnace types on MoO3 production were investigated by using molybdenum concentrate as a raw material obtained during the enrichment of copper ores. Preliminary experiments have been made using a chamber type furnace, and a transition to a pilot-scale has been carried out with rotary kiln experiments. The effects of a different time and atmospheric conditions on MoO3 roasting kinetics were investigated by experimental studies conducted in the temperature range of 500–650°C. It was determined that the optimum temperature and time for sulfur (S) removal was 625°C and 180 min in the studies carried out in the rotary kiln, and it was determined that 0.61%S content was reached with an average removal efficiency of 98%. The activation energy in these sets was calculated as 89.519 kJ/mol.

The effect of some of the reagents, namely hydrocarbon oil, Syntex (sulfated coconut oil surfactant), pine oil, sodium silicate, and lime, used at the Climax mill on the recovery and grade of molybdenite and gangue minerals has been investigated experimentally using factorially designed test approach in the laboratory. The results of the investigation are presented in two dimensional plots. The lower additions of lime (equivalent to a pH of 8 to 8.5) were desirable for maximizing recovery subject to constraints on grade. Higher additions of pine oil improved recovery, but only at the expense of grade. A mathematical model of the objectives of an operating plant was formulated and optimum reagent conditions obtained.

Bismuth, one of the heavier chemical elements, is a pinkish metalloid that is chemically related to antimony. It is a byproduct of lead and tungsten extraction and, to a lesser extent, of copper and tin extraction. Antimony is a metalloid and less heavy chemical element, an extraction coproduct of metals such as lead, silver and gold. While both bismuth and antimony are metalloids, their major uses are as chemical compounds. The vegetation of Mediterranean ecosystems is distinguished by its resistance to adverse environmental conditions, and that is the reason for examining the possibility of growing species of this flora in waste disposal sites (WDSs). The survival and growth of vegetation established at a waste disposal site is dependent to a large extent on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the material used in the final soil cover. In the Ano Liossia WDS, where extensive remediation work is under way, three areas were examined, which met certain criteria in relation to the age of the underlying waste and the existence of impermeable material in the final soil cover. Laboratory analyses have determined soil parameters and nutrient and heavy metal content. Alongside this, at all three sites a network has been installed to monitor the qualitative characteristics of the gaseous phase of the soil cover material. The results showed the existence of a soil material containing few nutrients and the prevalence of oxygen-poor conditions, accompanied by large concentrations of CH4, CO2 and H2S, at depths of up to about one meter.

Smelterville Flats in Idaho's Silver Valley has been designated as a Superfund site due to metals contamination resulting from the use of the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene river as a tailings impoundment earlier in this century. Tailings average in excess of 4% lead and zinc. Selective mining of highly contaminated zones is being studied as one of several possible remediation strategies. The first step towards remediation is the examination of the stratigraphic, geochemical and spatial characteristics of the site. These characteristics are related to appropriate sampling protocols and exploratory sample grid design. Special problems involved in the geostatistical analysis of tailings are emphasized.

With the growing exportation of coal from North America to the Pacific Rim countries and Europe, has come an increasing awareness of the need to determine economically optimized amounts of incombustibles (ash and moisture contents) for the shipped product. Despite the fact that demand bas caused a steady improvement in selling price, particularly for thermal coals, growing production and transportation costs have compelled producers to keep a sharp eye open for ways and means of minimizing the latter since this probably represents the greatest single potential for making savings. Consequently the Coal Industry has become acutely aware of the economic ramifications of eliminating moisture in particular, thereby producing further saving in the cost of transportation of product from the mine to the consumer. There is, however, a lower limit to which dewatering or drying can be taken and this relates to dustiness which is a function of the characteristics of the coal and the methods used for handling and storage during trans-shipment. Overdrying can lead to serious dust losses and difficulties in handling particularly if the coal contains a large proportion of fines. The ways and means for achieving this "happy medium" of optimization in moisture removal are seemingly undergoing gradual modification largely assisted by the following factors. a) Improvement in effectiveness of coal dewatering and drying equipment. b) Improvement in operational availability and utilization of the equipment. c) The development of surfactants, polymer flocculants and other agents which in many cases can be almost tailor made to suit specific applications.

A critical path approach is presented for the problem of mine ventilation net- works where regulators and fans are employed to control the airflow distribution which is preassigned. The problem is a classic one which arises in mine ventilation planning. By identifying the analogy between the network for controlled flow and that for CPPI, the applications of the well known CPM technique to the ventilation network problem become straight- forward. The mathematical formulation of the problem is presented and the solutions are illustrated with examples. The effect of booster fans on the total air power consumed in a ventilation network are also discussed.

Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. Information is also presented concerning design standards and recommended construction procedures

This paper summarizes and evaluates data on mine subsidence ground movements and associated damage for houses in Illinois. Based on the data collected, the response of homes to subsidence ground movements is expressed in terms of repair costs. A damage criteria is then proposed that relates the ground movements and damage levels. The data were collected as part of a comprehen¬sive study performed for the Illinois Abandoned ?Lined Lands Reclamation Council, A -M-RC, by the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Illinois, and probably will be published in late 1934 by the council. The study concentrated its efforts on surface ground movements and the effects to houses over abandoned room and pillar mines. The resultant surface subsidences are commonly dish or bowl shaped and are termed sags. Method of Analysis The steps in analysis used to arrive at the proposed damage criteria are: 1. Canvas and rap subsidence damage in houses, 2. Assess the associated ground movements, 3. Estimate the damage repair cost, 4. Develop a damage/repair level classifica¬tion, 5. Correlate the associated ground movement, damage/repair level and home construction type, 6. Propose a damage criteria.

At our annual meeting in St, Louis, Mo. in February 1961, we presented a comprehensive paper (No. 61-B-22) on the subject of "Blending and Handling of Materials for Agglomeration". In that paper you will find a discussion on the difference between "blending" and "mixing". With regard to "blending" we brought out the facts of its usefulness for the preparation o materials in an agglomerated mass to attain controlled chemical and physical uniformity. "Mixing" was discredited as not being useful for the attainment of uniformity of any kind.

Exploration of the Big Island trona beds by Stauffer Chemical Company started early in 1959. During the intervening time, Stauffer Chemical Company of Wyoming has developed a Large trona mine in this southwestern Wyoming area and has increased the over-all production of soda ash from natural sources by nearly one-half million tons per year. The trona, which is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate mineral, lies some 800 feet into the sedimentary rocks of the Green River formation. Present production is approximately 850,000 tons per year being extracted by means of a room-and-pillar mining system. Conventional coal mining equipment is used with some modification to accommodate local conditions. The mined and crushed ore is hoisted to the surface and processed in an on-site refinery. Refined soda ash is shipped to widely separated locations in covered hopper railraod cars. Construction in progress at Stauffer's plant will double the present capacity.

Many underground stone mines in the United States operate on multiple mining levels. The effects of interburden thickness, pillar offset between mining levels at various depths of cover, and in situ stress conditions are poorly understood. Pillar offset is the degree to which pillars are not columnized or stacked. In this study, calibrated numerical models are used to examine limestone pillar stability in these conditions. Also, the critical interburden thickness required to minimize the interaction between mining levels is explored. The model results show that there is interaction between numerous factors that control the stability of stone pillars in multiple-level conditions. The highest degree of local pillar instability occurs when pillar overlap ranges between 10 and 70 percent. The highest degree of stability occurs when pillars are stacked.

When reading different studies discussing trends in coal mining, it appears that a substantial expansion of output by the year 2000 is predicted, even in the most pessimistic forecasts. Depletion of shallow, easy-to-mine deposits is only a matter of time, and the future average mining depth will increase. The proportion of slope to shaft mines operated during the next decades will change in favor of the shaft mines. Since an increasing amount of shafts in new nine developments seems to be inevitable, it appears appropriate to focus more attention on shaft design criteria. Some valuable papers have recently been published (1) that emphasize geotechnical aspects of shaft design. In the discussion that follows some other aspects of design criteria will be evaluated.

Zinc ferrite is the major phase component present in zinc refinery residue (ZRR) and electric arc furnace dust (EAFD). Up to 71 percent zinc ferrite has been reported to be present in ZRR, and in most studies zinc ferrite has been deemed the major phase in EAFD. In 2010, the global annual production of EAFD was 3.7 Mt, with 15.20 kg of EAFD generated per ton of recycled steel [1]. The generations of ZRR and EAFD have been growing over time, requiring a greener approach for the reutilization and extraction of valuable elements. ZRR can be a potential source of zinc, as its zinc content is as high as 30 percent [2,3]. The presence of zinc ferrite makes the extraction of zinc difficult because zinc ferrite is refractory to leaching, and direct leaching is inefficient. The Waelz process is currently employed to extract zinc from EAFD and other metallurgical wastes. The Waelz process operates in the temperature range of 1,100 to 1,500 °C and uses coke as reductant. This study explores a carbon-free and relatively low-temperature process for the selective extraction of zinc from pure zinc ferrite.

The flexure of geologic strata, a phenomenon of inter- est to geologists and mining engineers alike, is examined as a sheet bending problem' in Coulomb plasticity. Formulae for the distribution of stress, strain and displacement increments, volume change, change in the length of the central surface and power of dissipation, as well as for the neutral surface shift are given. Strains of any magnitude are considered. The analysis shows that deeply buried strata may bend and develop "tensile" cracks under generally compressive states of stress. It is also shown that bed separation and high capacity props are desirable in mechanized longwall mining, a result in keeping with operating experience. Although speculative at this time, the analysis provides a rational working hypothesis as regards the problem of strata flexure and control.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district, there are seven major deposits: Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the sub-district are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont property.

A closed grinding circuit, typified by a ball mill-cyclone combination, is often required to treat a feed comprised of a variety of minerals of differing properties. Usually, the individual behaviour of the minerals is not assessed, a procedure which requires sizing and metal or mineralogical assaying of each size fraction. Further, sizing is frequently by screening to perhaps 325 mesh meaning that detail on the important -44 um fraction is unavailable. It is well appreciated that minerals can exhibit both individual classifying and grinding behaviour. Recognizing that cyclone classification results from differential centrifugal settling and acceleration rates, then minerals of differing specific gravity will exhibit individual mineral cyclone performance curves. If the minerals have differing grindabilities, then individual mineral rates of breakage may be expected. When treating an ore containing minerals of a range in specific gravity and/or grindability, individual mineral behaviour in the closed-circuit grind could be notable and perhaps important to the overall concentrator performance. An example is a lead-zinc ore, as shown by Kelsall et al.(1,2) This paper describes the individual mineral cyclone performance curves at sizes down to ti 10 um for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators; the Sullivan concentrator at Kimberley, British Columbia, and the Pine Point Mines concentrator at Pine Point, North West Territories, both operated by Cominco Ltd. In addition, individual mineral grinding behaviour for the four major minerals at the Sullivan concentrator is presented.
