Tunnel project contract documents often present groundwater infiltration requirements for components of the underground portions of the project. All too often these documents require quantifiable target inflows for these components, but only refer to them in subjective terms such as “dry,” “manageable,” etc. The Contractor’s definition of these terms will inevitably differ from the Engineer’s definition of these terms. The purpose of this paper is to look at common subjective terms used in documents and provide suggestions for reasonable quantifiable language. Additionally, the paper will provide information and recommendations on relative levels of cost and effort increase needed to provide increasing levels of water cutoff (i.e., achieve “dryness”?).

Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are estimated using friction factors and shock loss factors. The efficient planning and designing ofmine ventilation systems depend on the accuracy of the friction factors as well as the shock loss factors that are taken into consideration. While there is a much more acceptable knowledge of what constitutes friction loss in mine roadways, the shock loss factors are in general readily not available for all possible contexts of flow separation phenomena in mines. One such special case of shock loss in mines is the train of mine cars in the airway. Mine cars are widely used for the transportation of material, and the information on shock loss factor for mine cars is limited. This paper examines the pressure loss occurring due to a train of mine cars in an airway using scale model studies and numerical investigations. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) studies are conducted using four different turbulence models. The performance of different turbulence models is analyzed by comparing it with the experimental results. The study suggests that the boundary layer resolution method is significant in the simulation of shock loss. From the study, it is found that the shock loss factors from presently available model overestimate the pressure loss by 7 to 15 times. A better prediction model for the shock loss factor of a train of mine cars in the airway is proposed using the experimental results.

Fragmentation by blasting is a critical process in hard rock mining. The blasting process and outcomes are highly influenced by rock mass properties and their response to higher stresses and loading rates. Each rock mass is unique, but some features affect the blast energy similarly, leading to similar outcomes. Having analyzed these features and their influence on blast results, they can be incorporated into the blast design to achieve better outcomes. This paper presents a numerical model validated by a case study from the actual mine blasts that studied the effect of rock mass properties on explosive energy production, attenuations, and overall blast outcomes. The results show that when the model parameters are calibrated based on real data, they can be used to simulate the fragmentation process and therefore be used to aid blast design.

"Coal bumps, also referred to as dynamic failure events or coal bursts (Lawson, Weakley, and Miller, 2016), continue to be a hazard in underground coal mines. While current design methods have significantly reduced the occurrence of coal bumps, they have not been completely eliminated. This paper investigates a correlation between coal compositional components, coal molecular structure, and probability of coal bumps in an effort to deepen understanding of coal behavior in an effort to reduce hazards in underground coal mines.Samples from the Penn State Office of Coal (PSOC) Department of Energy Coal Samples (DECS) were obtained for Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis using the KBr pellet method. Peaks indicative of the coal molecular structures were obtained using spectral integration software. These data, combined with published elemental data, were compared to historic bump occurrence in order to establish a possible correlation. Finally, results based on multivariate analysis of the elemental and FTIR data with bump status as the dependent variable suggest that elemental sulfur and molecular structure can be used as an indicator of bump susceptibility within the sample set considered.INTRODUCTIONThe study of coal requires consideration of multiple variables: percentages of organic and inorganic components, organic component origins, coal age, pore structure, cleat density, elemental composition, etc. Examining coal in situ increases the number of variables, such as coal depth, seam thickness, surrounding stratigraphy, and so forth. This collection of variables influences the subsequent behavior of coal simultaneously, and weighing their relative impact is a challenge for researchers. “A problem never exists in isolation; it is surrounded by other problems in space and time” (Ackoff, 1956). Having a substance such as coal that we know so much about, and yet so little, we have to ask what can be learned.An experimental study using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was undertaken to determine if the chemical structure of coal contains information which may lead to a better understanding of triggers or attributes which may, in turn, lead to an increased probability of a dynamic failure event. While a full analysis of the factors driving dynamic failure are beyond the scope of this study, it is possible that a better understanding of the chemical structure of coal will lead to an increased knowledge of its inherent behavior, including its propensity to burst."

Grinding with steel media adversely affects the flotation response of galena. Electrochemical measurements, flotation tests, and AES, XPS, and STEM examinations were employed to identify interactions between galena and mild steel. Iron oxide, hydroxide, or sulfate species that formed on the galena surface upon contact with mild steel decreased its floatability, with the time of contact and aeration condition affecting the severity of the flotation depression.. Parallel tests performed with an active metal, magnesium, indicated that floatability was also affected by the presence of a surface coating involving lead species.

The incidence of heat stroke in the South African gold mining industry is today small (less than 1 in 10 6 shifts worked). Acclimatization and selection procedures have been developed and applied throughout the industry, underground working conditions have, and are being improved, and personnel are to-day made more aware of heat stress and its consequences than ever before. Although these actions have, over the years, brought about a steady reduction in the incidence of heat stroke (see Figure 1) the small incidence of heat stroke which persists indicates that heat stress is still a problem. This realization provides the stimulus for the work presented in this paper, which has as its primary objective the development of reliable heat stress limits for men working in South African gold mines. [ ] In keeping with recent trends3I4 the approach followed in this paper is based on the physical principles of heat transfer. In this research study, the interaction of particles with substrates of different roughness magnitude was investigated. Particle surface treatment, relative humidity (RH), and surface roughness levels were controlled in order to achieve separation of different particles by applying removal forces. Three different approaches to reproducibly roughen surfaces were used. Initially, glass disks were laser engraved to create a reproducible, controlled roughness substrate. However, the laser engraving method produced surface features that were much greater in scale than the particles. These scale differences were such that the substrates produced were not of value to this research. The second option investigated to induce reproducible substrate roughness was to scratch the glass disk using sandpapers of known grain size. A third approach to establish reproducible roughness was to use fine stainless-steel wire mesh substrates. In tests with sanded glass disks, the interfacial energy of plasma-cleaned (hydrophilic) glass beads had a high variation at 40% RH, showing non-uniformity of area of contact between particles and substrates. As the RH increased, it was expected that the interfacial energy of hydrophilic particles would increase, but this behavior was not observed. In addition, comparing the interfacial energy results of hydrophilic particles with hydrophobic particles, a region with significant interfacial energy difference was not identified. In the case of the stainless-steel mesh substrate, the mesh asperities and particle dimensions were comparable. Thus, the smaller particles had more area of contact with the substrate than the larger particles. For the plasma-cleaned (hydrophilic) beads, the recovery values had an average of 92.5% recovery when the RH was between 46 and 85%. For the hydrophobic beads, the average recovery was 19.0% when the RH was between 46 and 75%. Thus, the hydrophobic characteristic of the particle influenced its lower interaction with the mesh substrate. The difference in recovery can be exploited to achieve separation of particles based upon adhesive forces.

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

Cyanide is highly toxic to humans and other organisms. Concentrations of RCN as low as 0.05 ppm can be lethal to fish (Scott and Ingle', 1981). In wet climates and in colder climates where natural degradation is slow, it is becoming mandatory to destroy cyanides in effluents before they can be discharged. The disposal of spent gold ore as tailings from cyanide heap leach processing facilities is a matter of concern to the public, the mining industry, and regulatory agencies. South Dakota mining laws and regulations require that spent ore be neutralized to a suitable level with respect to cyanide before disposal (Durkin, 1990). To safeguard the environment and protect ground-water and surface-water supplies adequately, a reliable test is needed to determine the amount of cyanide in the solid spent ore.

Two recent antitrust cases, coming from widely separated areas, different industries and involving wholly different facts were decided by the Supreme Court on June 7, 1965. The decisions in these two cases may well prove to be the most important and far-reaching decisions in the field of labor law that have been handed down in the last 24 years. These cases, although quite dissimilar factually, had one common element. In both, the gravamen of the antitrust violation was bottomed on the terms of labor agreements negotiated by a multiemployer group. These cases are usually referred to as Pennington1 and Jewel Teat. Since a number.-of references will be made to the antitrust laws, it may be well to state briefly the applicable portions. Section I of the Sherman Antitrust Act makes "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal...". Section 2 imposes criminal sanctions against "Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several states...". Under Section 4 of the Clayton Act a person who sustains damages as a result of a violation of the antitrust laws is entitled to recover treble damages plus costs.

This paper describes the vibration transmissibility characteristics of mining vehicle seats under dynamic conditions in an opencast iron ore mine. Magnitude and frequency contents of vibration signals on the seat floor as well as on top of the seats were measured to record the change during transmission. The conventional rigid seats were found to resonate at about 4 Hz, which coincides with the resonance of the human spine. The pneumatic suspension seats also proved to be more efficient in attenuating the overall vibration energy transmitted from the vehicle chassis to the human body.

Introduction Many discoveries have been made during the-past decade of low grade gold-silver deposits in the western US. This has stimulated development of low cost cyanidation procedures for precious metal extraction. Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for application to these low grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste, and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successful, these resources must have good permeability to achieve uniform distribution of the cyanide solution throughout the heaps. Some of the most difficult of the gold and silver ores to treat successfully by heap leaching are those containing excessive amounts of clays, or fines generated by crushing. Presence of excessive amounts of slimes, -50 µm (-270 mesh), in the heap leach feed will slow percolation, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap. This causes the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than penetrate the ore bed. The problem of heap leaching ores with fines can be aggravated while preparing ore heaps because of the natural sorting of coarse and fine material that occurs. This phenomenon results in concentration or ore fines in the center of individual ore piles and concentration of larger rock fragments of the lower slopes and base of the pile. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off for the installation of the sprinkling system, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. This results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. Consequently, the leach solutions follow the course of least resistance. They percolate down through the coarse ore regions and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective use of marginal gold and silver resources by heap leaching required development of new methods to achieve more uniform size distribution when preparing ore heaps and better slime control during leaching. Early methods Agglomeration and balling of crushed ore to produce a porous and more uniform feed material for heap leaching is a viable method for treating clayey ores. Researchers from the US Bureau of Mines in Reno, NV began agglomeration pretreatment research in the mid-1970s for applications to and exploitation of these poor percolating feed materials. Little attention had been given to such methods before the Bureau's research. In 1905, T. C. Scrutton developed a unique technique for obtaining rapid vat leaching of a clayey ore where the gold was finely disseminated. His technique consisted of rolling the ore down a chute inclined at 60° to form agglomerates or balls readily permeable by the cyanide solution. However, these agglomerates lacked rigidity. And, to ensure good percolation leaching and washing, they could not be bedded in layers more than 1 m (3 ft) deep. If this depth was exceeded, it is difficult to obtain uniform leaching and washing. This results in reduced gold recovery. Shepard and others in 1937 studied the addition of lime and carbon dioxide or calcium carbonate to gold-bearing tailings to form agglomerates suitable for vat leaching. Satisfactory percolation flow rates were achieved in 90 g (3 oz) scale experiments, but the reagent requirements were cost prohibitive. LIX63 in combination with DNNS selectively extracts nickel and/or cobalt from acidic leach liquors with pH values as low as 1.0. Nickel/cobalt and cobalt/nickel selectivities are achieved by varying the relative concentrations of LIX63 and DNNS. Increasing LIX63 concentration retards both extraction and strip-ping rates while DNNS has the opposite effect. Slope analyses of equilibrium data indicate that both LIX63 and DNNS are present in the extracted complexes. Examples of possible flowsheets are presented.

Mine valuation is a multifaceted, interdisciplinary process by which the economic viability of an old, existing, or new mining property or venture is determined. The problems associated with arriving at a representative and accurate value for a mining property are complex and numerous, and the procedures utilized in determining these values vary from simple, back-of-envelope calculations to sophisticated mathematical manipulations requiring computer modeling and analysis. Regardless of the complexity or the degree of sophistication associated with any particular project, the evaluation process must ultimately provide management with two basic types of information. First, the evaluation process should indicate whether or not the mining project is economically viable after careful consideration of all engineering, environmental, geologic, and other variables pertaining to the project. Second, the evaluation process should provide management in- formation on the relative attractiveness of the project when compared to other alternatives. In some cases, it may be extremely difficult to supply this information for a project directly. Nonetheless, the evaluation process should and must present all information necessary in a format which can be incorporated into the decision-making process as expeditiously as possible.

A sophisticated process of extracting ultrafine sulfide mineral particles of under 1µm size suspended in clay slurry has been developed through studies of electrochemical properties of particle surface. Experimental procedure and data of the process applied to some clay ores containing sphalerite and pyrite, and molybdenite and other sulfide minerals are reported. Discussions concentrated on the function of process reagents, particularly on various modifying reagents, and on the effect of dispersed or flocculated state of ultrafine particles in slurry which affect significantly the performance of the process.

It is no secret that the upkeep of roads, tunnels, bridges, and water and waste water facilities has been neglected for decades. Cities, states and towns across the United States are now grappling with these issues, ones that will take decades and billions of dollars to fix.Because of this infrastructure issue, the North American tunneling industry is flourishing. Cities across the country are looking to go underground to alleviate traffic issues, transporting water and waste water to more people in more efficient ways.In October, the seventh annual Cutting Edge conference was held in Atlanta, GA. Put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Britain’s Tunnelling Journal, about 175 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world attended. Attendees included owners, designers and contractors. An accompanying exhibit included 28 companies.The theme of the two-day conference was Advances in Tunneling Technology. Speakers examined the latest advances in tunneling technology, its methodology and how these advances can be harnessed to assist upcoming major tunneling projects. The conference featured a tailored, high-end, single-track program of subject-specific presentations that focused on innovation and practical experience. Two in-depth panel discussions at the end of each day were also included.Patricia Mulroy was a keynote speaker on Monday. She is senior fellow for climate adaptation and environmental policy at The Brookings Institution. Like many others, Mulroy believes the U.S. infrastructure in in a state of disrepair. But, she said, no one wants to talk about it. “We need to have a conversation about infrastructure. We cannot be afraid to talk about building it and the cost.” For this to happen, though, the nation needs leadership."

It is calculated that since the beginning of last century, which practically coincides with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, our civilization has consumed around 239.5 million tons of copper (see: Table 1). According to the most pessimistic projections of today, with only a 2.5% annual growth rate in demand, we are bound until the end of this century to consume another 200 million tons of copper in remaining 17 years. A recent study made by US Bureau of Mines (1) indicates that the proven ore reserves of 150 major operating mines and about 120 deposits sufficiently explored for development and feasibility studies accumulate a total mass of 49.3 billion tons of ore, assaying an average of 0.82% Cu and containing around 324 million tons of recoverable copper. Consequently, there is a high grade of probability that the bulk of our future ore supplies, for our demand of, say, next 25 years will cane precisely from these mines. The interesting point in USBM study is that it indicates the recoverable byproduct content of these ores and which is: 118.2 million troy ounces of gold 2277.4 million troy ounces of silver 7.1 million tons of lead 24.7 million tons of zinc 1.3 million tons of nickel 3.1 million tons of molybdenum 765 thousand tons of cobalt, and 720 thousand troy ounces of platinum. This information gives us a relatively reliable profile of our future ores for next 25 years, and thus makes possible evaluation of byproduct credits in our future copper mining and producing activities.

"The Greater Paris projects involves the creation of a 200km extension of the actual public transport network on the close outskirt of Paris. In 2011, SYSTRA has been awarded the Engineering studies of a 20km underground section in the densely urbanized southeast quarter of the Parisian suburb. In order to both guide the TBM technology choice and identify and mitigate the risk due to soil settlement during tunnel boring, several analysis have been carried out and integrated into a Geographical Information System to share and manage this risk during the successive design phases of the project. The geological context‘s complexity and the Owner‘ requirements have led to the necessity of using an innovative analysis approach, leveraging both the numerical modelling analysis’s accuracy and the analytical method‘s ease of programming and implementation in a GIS, by the mean of the calibration of the analytical approach’ parameters on the FEM results.INTRODUCTIONThe Greater Paris Transport Project foresees the extension of the actual public transport network to the close outskirt of Paris through the extension lines 11 and 14, the creation of a circular new line around Paris - line 15 completed by lines 16 and 18 linking developing territories - and line 17 to Roissy-Charlesde- Gaulle airport.The SOCIETE DU GRAND PARIS (SGP) is the public institution that promotes this project and awards SYSTRA as Engineering for the 15th Line southeast section.Line 15th – South-East sectionIn 2011, the Owner SGP (SOCIÉTÉ DU GRAND PARIS) awarded to SYSTRA the preliminary and detailed design of a 20km-long underground section of Line 15, between the stations of Villejuif-Louis-Aragon and Noisy-Champs. The double-track, single-tube tunnel has an inner diameter of 8.5m (about 9.8m excavated diameter, 75m2 excavated cross-section). The tunnel is inserted in a densely urbanized context."

With ore grades continually decreasing and finer mill feed requirements, it becomes increasingly important to have the capability to handle the larger tonnages economically. With the 10 ft. Standard capable of reducing 1,633 metric tons per hour (1,800 short tons per hour) to 80 percent passing 50 MM (2 inches) and the 10 ft. Short Head following to produce a mill feed of all minus 12 MM (1/2 inch) at a rate of 608 metric tons per hour (670 short tons per hour), we feel significant savings will be realized in installation and operating costs. The largest concentration of cost in the secondary and tertiary crushing stations is the building itself that houses the process equipment. An example of the savings to be attained can be seen from an examination of a 40,820 metric ton (45,000 short ton) per day crushing plant. A total of nine 7 ft. Symons Cone crushers is used to generate 12 MM (1/2 inch) ball mill feed. The average center distance between units is 6.1 M (20 feet) and allowing a 6.1 M (20 feet) nominal distance from the centerline to the wails, the building becomes 61 M (200 feet) long. For this production rate, four 10 ft. Symons Cone crushers would be required. With the 10 ft. crushing plant requiring a center distance spacing of 7.6 M (25 feet), the building length totals approximately 38 M (125 feet). Construction costs vary depending on location, but a reduction in building length from 61 M (200 feet) to 38 M (125 feet) will result in estimated savings of between $2,500,000 and S4,000,000. While the 10 ft. Symons Cone has been involved in a number of feasibility studies for some time, the Process Machinery Division of Rexnord commenced detail design work on the 10 ft. Cone crusher in 1972. For comparison purposes, the 10 ft. and 7 ft. capacities are given in Table 1.
