In 1982, the result of a 3-year study was published as "A Guide to the Understanding of Ore Reserve Estimation". The principal conclusions were that computation formed only part, and perhaps not the most important part, of an estimate and that the estimate should recognize that geological, mining engineering and metallurgical judgements formed an essential part of the eventual result. Subsequent expectation/realization studies of several mines have produced case histories which form the principal basis of the paper. These imply that geology is even a larger factor than thought earlier.

Shock loss occurs when there is a change in the area of a drift or airflow direction. These shock losses accumulate throughout the ventilation system and will increase the mine resistance as underground development deepens or becomes more complex. Hence, shock losses should be carefully considered when establishing the resistance through a series of branches as they can be a significant contributor to the estimated mine resistance. Using computer software to simulate a ventilation system is common but applying reasonable shock loss factors in the software is not a simple or direct process. Determining shock loss values includes the consideration of historical measurements, application of factors and formulas from literature based on the geometry and complexity of junctions, and the geometry variation at different locations. For example, the shock loss at the bottom of a ventilation raise can consist of a 90° bend and a sudden area change. This paper presents an approach for estimating shock loss factors near raise junctions using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Current and future work will also be compared with field measurements. Results from this approach are compared with software defaults as well as classical techniques in published literature and standards.

Compressed air energy storage (CAES) has been initiated recently in West Germany with a 290 MW peaking-power facility utilizing twin cavities with volumes of 150,000 m3 each in the Huntorf salt dome (1). The implementation of CAES in several geologic media is being studied carefully in the United States (2); however, the use of cavities for CAES in salt domes or salt anticlines and the associated long-term stability of these cavities is the specific topic of this paper (3). The cavities represent an essential element in a CAES plant, and thus should be designed and operated to perform with "stability" over the planned life of the overall facility. As employed herein, cavity stability implies the extent to which an acceptable amount of cavity storage volume can be utilized with economic maintenance over the planned life of the overall facility. In this sense stability is relative to the planned use of a storage cavity. Figure 1. depicts the salt deposits of the United States (U.S.) (4). The Gulf Coast region includes the only confirmed salt dome basin in the U.S., although salt structures also exist as anticlines in the Paradox Basin of Utah and Colorado. Because of the relatively small amount of elevation change within the Gulf Coast, CAES in salt dome cavities appears to hold considerably more potential for energy storage in this region than more traditional "pumped hydro" systems.

The history and development of the FMC Coke process has been reported in numerous presentations over the past 10 years (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) but a short review is desirable, especially regarding the aspects that are influenced by the coal to be used. F'MC has been developing this process in pilot facilities since 1956 and in a modest sized plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming since 1960 (Figure I). This plant produces strong uniformly sized coke briquettes from a completely non-coking coal, namely Elkol, a sub-bituminous coal of the Adaville seam. Since operating commercially, over 300,000 tons have been produced, 90% of which has been used in electric phosphorus furnaces and some 10% of which went for trials in iron blast furnaces. We believe that this commercial use of non-coking coals is a unique experience in the history of coke manufacture.

Today, aggregate producers in the Denver Metropolitan area, herein defined as Denver and surrounding communities in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Douglas and Jefferson Counties, are scrambling to secure their future reserves. The Denver market is somewhat unique among the larger metropolitan markets in that the source of needed aggregate for the future is very much undecided. 2. Present Aggregate Resources Presently, the annual consumption of aggregate resources in the Denver Metropolitan area amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sand, gravel and crushed stone of which the later accounts for about 20%. Based on population growth projections for the front range, by the year 2000 the annual rate of consumption for aggregate in the Denver Metro area could be in the 25+ million ton range.

The current emphasis on environmental problems has focused attention on the massive nationwide accumulations of mine, mill, and smelter wastes that represent potential air and water pollution hazards. The pollution hazards can be reduced or eliminated by utilization or stabilization of these wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, since the inception of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, has been conducting research to determine the practicality of various utilization and stabilization procedures. Investigations include partial extractions of desirable waste components and full utilization of the wastes as simulated soils or in ceramic or other structural products. Chemical, vegetative, and combined chemical-vegetative methods of stabilization have been actively studied. This report updates information previously developed by the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center and presents the current status of antipollution solid waste work 1/,2/.

In the froth flotation process the detrimental effect of slimes on the froth flotability of valuable minerals has long been known.1 Work by Aplan2 on the froth flotation of coal has shown that the presence of clay slimes causes loss in flotation selectivity, and recovery of combustibles. Obviously then the presence of clay slimes to any great extent in the froth cell feed in a coal preparation plant is undesirable. This problem is exacerbated in plants treating raw 600 um (28#) by zero material due to the variation in flotation with size. The net effect of this phenomenon in a bank of cells treating raw minus 600 µm (28#) material s that by the time adequate flotation of the coarsest size fractions has occurred the finer sizes are already producing undesirable high ash material, which often leads to unacceptable overall quality. Reduction in aeration rate and/or chemical addition to combat this, further decreases the flotation rate of the coarsest fraction leading to heavy losses of coarse low ash coal to the tailings. The above mentioned characteristics formed a key aspect of the fine coal circuitry design at Elk Run Coal Company in Sylvester, WV. The plant was designed to produce compliance steam coal (less than 1.20 lbs. S02/million b.t.u.) Desliming ahead of the froth flotation was included, as the slimes in the plant feed were clay rich, had very high ash levels, and low potential recovery. Lab testwork had also shown that poor selectivity would be expected if raw minus 600 um (28#) material was froth floated.

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. Apparatus The solvent extraction tests were carried in a 2000 ml plastic cylindrical reactor equipped with four 0.5” baffles. In 1997, 92.3% or 235.7 Mt (259.8 million st) of coal produced in Wyoming came from the Wyodak coal zone in the eastern Powder River coalfield. The mined portions of the zone consist of one to three beds of coal with an aggregate thickness between 15 and 33.5 m (50 and 110 ft). The thickest expression is 61 m (200 ft). The delivered coal from this zone averages 0.33% sulfur, 5.12% ash and 19.98 MJ/kg (8,590 Btu/lb.). This coal zone occurs at or near the top of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation, which is overlain by the Eocene Wasatch Formation. There is also production from two coalbeds in the lower portion of the Wasatch at the southern end of the basin. Production of coalbed methane derived from the Wyodak coal zone is currently an estimated 289 Mm3/a (10.2 billion cu ft/year). This production is occurring west and downdip from the coal mines and is increasing each year.

A geostatistical approach is proposed for the design of infill drilling programs. The method is consisted of three major steps: developing geological favorability models, delineating mineralization and ore envelopes, and classifying reserves or resources. Geological modeling aims at developing favorable geological zones in which drilling is designed. Modeling mineralization and ore envelopes establishes criteria on potential blocks to be drilled. Top target blocks should be those included within ore envelopes. The framework of resource categories includes five types: probable reserves, indicated reserves, indicated resources, possible resources, and barren. Indicated reserves or resources are the top priority to be drilled for the definition of minable reserves. Possible resources may be considered as targets for further exploration. The algorithms involved in the analysis include indicator favorablity analysis, ordinary kriging, and indicator kriging. A case study presented here involves a gold deposit of Carlin type. The deposit was delineated by a sparse drilling program with 230 feet of average spacing. The infill drilling program designed by the new method suggests a significant reduction on the number of holes from a regular-grid infill drilling pattern.

China was nota factor in the supply of fluorspar to the United States until the early 1980's when it shipped in its first package of Metallurgical lump, that not only was higher grade than the Mexican Metallurgical spar but was also about $30.00 a ton cheaper landed at Burnside. Representatives of the Mexican Fluorspar Institute and several producers made trips to see the Chinese operations supplying their once reserved market place. China, an enigma to most Westerners suddenly became the new contender, with prices that were disgustingly low or so thought the other exporters. Of course China has been mining, producing, consuming and exporting from 400,000 to 500,000 tons per year of various grades of fluorspar but until the first partloads came to the U.S., very little attention was paid to their exports by American-continent producers or consumers.

Critical minerals are nonfuel minerals, essential to the U.S. economy and national security, whose supply chain may be disrupted. Mine wastes are potential sources of critical minerals. The goal of this project is to estimate and characterize critical minerals endowment in three mining districts in New Mexico: Black Hawk (Grant County), Hillsboro (Sierra County), and Magdalena (Socorro County), and assess their acid-generating potential. The Black Hawk district is an arsenide five-element vein deposit (Ag, Ni, Co, As, U, Bi, and local minerals like Pb, Cu, Zn, W, and Sn). The Copper Flat mine in Hillsboro district is a copper porphyry deposit. The Kelly mine in Magdalena was first mined at 1878 and are carbonate-hosted Pb-Zn deposits. Mine waste rock piles and tailings are sampled using USGS Beta sampling procedure. Geochemistry results show that Black Hawk district mine wastes samples are elevated in Ag (>200 ppm), Co (290 ppm), Ni (2,130 ppm), and Zn (8,463 ppm). Copper Flat mine tailing is elevated in Bi (111 ppm), Cu (7,453 ppm), and Zn (2,360 ppm). Downhole profile plots in Copper Flat show the positive correlation between Cu, S and Te values. Magdalena samples are elevated in Cu (5,700 ppm), Zn (129,500 ppm), and Pb (58,100 ppm). Determination of acid-generating potential in these areas suggests that Black Hawk district mine wastes are non-acid-forming while high S present in some Copper Flat and Magdalena samples can potentially cause acid mine drainage.

"In China, most reserves of rich iron ores have now been depleted and sustainable development of low-grade iron ores has become a critical discussion topic in the mining industry today. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of beneficiating a low-grade, hematite-magnetite ore (assaying 18.64% Fe) for subsequent utilization. In this study, process mineralogy and beneficiation of the ore were carried out in the laboratory. First, mineralogical investigation shows that the main metal minerals are hematite, magnetite and a little octahedrite that cannot be used at present, and the main gangue minerals include albite, quartz and ankerite. Based on the above, a combined process of magnetic separation and gravity concentration has been developed by using laboratory low- and high- intensity magnetic separators and a slimes shaking table, respectively. Factors affecting these separation methods are discussed, including process mineralogy on the tailings of the high-intensity separator, where the iron minerals were found to be finely disseminated in the gangue as inclusions. By applying a two-stage grinding step and a magnetic separation stage together with gravity concentration, a marketable iron concentrate assaying 60.79% Fe at a recovery of 60.23% can be obtained, when the feed assays 18.75%Fe, which provides some useful information for the sustainable use of low-grade iron ore.IntroductionIron is the world’s most commonly used metal. Steel, of which iron ore is the key ingredient, represents almost 95% of all metal used per year, primarily in structural engineering applications and for maritime purposes, automobiles and general industrial applications. By the end of 2009, the iron and steel production in China ranked the first in the world, and reached 0.567 and 0.537 billion tons, respectively. The domestic supply of iron ore was 0.88 billion tons and about 0.628 billion tons of iron ore were imported in 2009."

Leaching is defined as a form of extraction in which a valuable constituent is removed from a solid body by mass transfer to a solution which, for the purpose of this discussion, is considered to be an aqueous medium. Historically, leaching has been applied to the recovery and purification of many elements. This paper, however, is directed toward the recovery of copper, uranium, vanadium, and precious metals included in the following systems: 1. The leaching of copper minerals, sulfides and oxides, by acid or by ammoniacal leach solutions with or without an oxidant. 2. The leaching of gold and silver, either native metals or as minerals by an oxygen-containing alkaline cyanide solution. 3. The solubilization of certain uranium and vanadium minerals by oxygen or oxidant-bearing lixiviants. Many other systems of this general type exist, but from a production standpoint, these three systems account for most of the major values recovered by leaching.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the various designs and design alternates available for large fine crushing plants, and to discuss objectives and criteria upon which these designs are founded. Common practice for size reduction of run-of-mine or run-of-pit ore in preparation for subsequent treatment utilizes a three-stage system. First stage, or primary breaking is generally carried out with jaw or gyratory crushers. The usual output from this stage provides a feed for fine crushing in the size range of 6 to 10 inches. This discussion is limited to the process of fine crushing, and we will further limit it to what is commonly called secondary and tertiary crushing. We define a large crushing plant as one with a minimum capacity of 2,000 tons per hour. Generally, these plants utilize cone type crushers to reduce ore for rod, ball, or pebble mill feed.

Zaldivar is an open pit copper mine operation located in the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile. The plant produces Cu cathodes using 4 solvent extraction trains. The plant was started up May 1995. Since 1996 the plant has been using on-stream analyzers based on X-ray fluorescence and titration for process monitoring and control. Elemental analyzer alone is not able to provide the critical information for plant operation, it has to be complemented by on-stream titrators integrated to one sampling system. The analyzers are located in a prefabricated shelter. The analyzer system project, operation and performance issues are the main topic of this paper.

Niobium in kaolin clay from the Late Permian sequences was reported in the range of several hundreds of micrograms per gram and was considered as a potential resource for its high concentrations and large areal distribution. Ti-bearing minerals associated with kaolin clay were identified as the main host phase for niobium in some case studies. However, the correlation between the concentration of niobium and titanium is poor, and the types of Ti-bearing minerals and modes of occurrence of niobium are not clear. Typical kaolin clay samples from the Late Permian sequences from southwest China were characterized, and the final products derived from kaolin clay sample were investigated using XRF, ICP-MS, XRD, SEM, and TEM (EDS). The results reveal that there were three types of TiO2 mineral phases in the clay samples: (a) massive TiO2 minerals and (b) aggregates of nano TiO2 minerals did not contain niobium while (c) granular TiO2 minerals were the source of niobium from the EDS analysis. The granular TiO2 minerals included anatase and rutile, both of which were the sources of niobium in kaolin clay in the current study. The findings are of great theoretical implication for source and origin study of Ti-bearing minerals and guidance for separation and recovery of niobium from kaolin clay.

The well-being of any company is directly related to the well-being of its employees and to the effectiveness with which the personnel resource is managed. In an era when personnel management has steadily become more complex, there is an increased awareness of employee information systems at all levels of management due to: (1) regulations enacted by federal, state, and local government agencies; (2) technological advances within the mining industry which have resulted in the requirement for highly skilled personnel; (3) increasing concern for the confidentiality of employee information; and (4) management's need for information for planning purposes to control costs and for early recognition of trends and potential problems. In the past it was sufficient to maintain records manually. Today computers are necessary to provide information on short notice and effectively manipulate large volumes of' data. This discussion will describe the following aspects of employee information systems: (1) collection and maintenance of information, and (2) applications which include employee health, salary administration, management re- sources, and labor negotiations.

Approximately forty years ago, the military services began a realistic investigation of the problems involved with the replacement of high pressure gaseous systems with liquid oxygen systems. The program was temporarily discontinued because of numerous State-of-the-Art problems. Ten years later, interest in the liquid oxygen breathing concept was revived. Initial testing of this concept was completed in 1946. The ensuing years have seen the general acceptance of many cryogenic breathing systems for airborne applications. The inherent features of weight savings (approximately 70%) and space savings (approximately 80%) make it very desirable for high performance military aircraft. A typical aircraft system consists of a storage container with appropriate integrated control valving (the liquid oxygen converter), a heat exchanger, breathing regulator, and oxygen mask. Normally the liquid converter is located in the aircraft wheel well for easy access by ground crew personnel and the breathing regulator is mounted in the cockpit where the pilot can connect his oxygen mask. An aircraft system such as this will provide the pilot with eight hours of breathing oxygen after a 24 hour standby period. Early in 1960, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration sought a means of providing a cooling system for their personnel involved in fueling the rockets used in the space program. While fueling rockets N.A,S.A, personnel wore a completely enclosed butyl rubber suit and were susceptible to heat prostration.
