Meridian Gold Company's Royal Mt. King mine (RMK), a subsidiary of FMC Gold Company, is located approximately 40 miles east of Stockton, California on the western edge of the historic mother lode belt. Gold ore at RMK is associated with a series of northwest trending fault zones hosted in either meta-volcanic or meta-sedimentary rock types commonly referred to as greenstone sulfide and carbonaceous phyllite. Mineralogy studies show gold in both ore types to occur primarily as electrum in the form of 1 -20 um inclusions in pyrite with varying amounts of free milling gold. In carbonaceous ores, gold was not found to be closely associated with carbon. At the start of the current mining operation, three major ore resources were identified. North Pit and Gold Knoll pits were the major greenstone reserves while Skyrocket Pit contained over 60% of the total reserves as carbonaceous ore. Since North Pit and Gold Knoll were to be the first areas mined, the mill began operation in February 1989 with a flowsheet designed for greenstone ores with a carbonaceous expansion anticipated after depletion of the greenstone reserves.

A number of forces are at work that are now having an influence on coal handling systems. Changes are occurring and will be occurring at an increasing rate during the next few years. 1. Environmental concerns will dictate that dust pollution and spontaneous combustion and its resulting problems be rigidly controlled. 2. Slurry pipelines will be a reality despite the opposition of the railroads because they are economical and make good business sense. Artifical roadblocks can only survive for a limited time. 3. Coal is now and will remain the most economic fuel, particularly for power generation. This is true in most of the developed nations not just the United States. Increase in demand requires a close inspection of transportation systems. 4. A projected major increase in the export of U.S. coals may never occur without major port developments not the least of which will be the ability to accommodate large ships without demurrage time now affecting such shipments at U.S. Ports.

Improved desulfurization of Illinois coals is a widely Shared research goal. The development of a physical cleaning strategy and the results of a project to demonstrate technical and economic feasibility of producing a low sulfur compliance coal from the Illinois Basin are reported. Processing flowsheets to extend or retrofit existing preparation plants are considered. Comminution, conventional and micro-bubble flotation, and selective agglomeration technologies were investigated to maximize pyrite rejection while maintaining high product yield. Batch bench scale testing was followed by continuous pilot plant studies. Parameters included grind size, flow rates, pulp density, aeration, agitation, and reagent dose. An economic evaluation of targeted processes is included.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a shield and compressed air for construction of a short section of a pair of twin single-track tunnels for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) transit system. Although only two blocks long, this section posed the greatest difficulties to both engineers and contractors, and is the most expensive section of line construction on the MARTA system. All this derives directly from its setting--these tunnels had to be constructed through mixed-face conditions. SETTING The Broad Street tunnels form a link between the Peachtree Center and Five Points Stations, in the heart of Atlanta's central business district (Figure 1). Peachtree Center sits atop a solid rock ridge, which inspired the design of a deep rock-mined station, as described in the 1979 RETC. Five Points Station is MARTA's hub--the intersection of the system's two main branches. It is located in the old railroad gulch, a filled-in erosional valley at the base of Peachtree Ridge, and was constructed by open-cut methods. The alignment and profile of the Broad Street tunnels were closely constrained by these two adjacent anchors, and in the six-block stretch between them there was very little room for maneuvering. Since the rock ridge petered out about in the middle of the section, it was evident at the outset that there would be about two blocks of rock tunneling at the north end, two blocks of soft ground construction at the south, and two blocks of mixed-face in between. It is this central two-block section that is the focus of this paper.

Surface dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or imporve a surface dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and flocculation. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established (1). These data will be presented at a latter date.

And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. "TBM cutter life evaluation in abrasive granitic rocks is a very important issue, especially in pressurized face tunneling with mixshield TBM for which the planning of costly interventions becomes crucial. This paper presents an overview of methodologies for cutter life evaluation in rock. A comparative study is performed to indicate the predictability of cutter life evaluation methods based on detail data from the NS3 tunnel project in Singapore. A new model is developed based upon the cutter wear information of eight TBM tunnels from around the world. New methods are proposed to evaluate the optimum intervention interval length and the number of worn-out disc cutters for a tunnel project. Finally, two new laboratory tests in the evaluation of disc cutter abrasion, including a full-scale and a small-scale test, are introduced, and their test results are discussed. INTRODUCTION The issue of wear evaluation for hard rocks has been extensively studied in drilling and pavement industry. In this regard, several tests and evaluation methods have been proposed to estimate or evaluate the state of tool life (e.g. bit life for drilling). In the case of TBM tunneling, tool wear may depend on several factors such as mineral composition, strength, or type of cutting, but as the abrasion is usually the major mechanism for the tool wear in hard rock, the developed methods for cutter wear or cutter life evaluation are mostly based on the abrasion indices such as Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI). This paper attempts to review the major methodologies for disc cutter wear and life evaluation and to propose new methods to evaluate cutter life and intervention interval evaluation based on detail information of a mixshield tunnel project in Singapore as well as general information of some other projects from Iran, Italy, South Africa, and France. As the laboratory tests are crucial in the process of evaluation, two new lab tests are developed and used to inspect suitability of the new proposed model for disc cutter wear evaluation."

The principal impurities in some feldspar ores are titanium and iron which impart color and in turn degrade the quality of the ore. The mineralogical investigations indicate that titanium element originates from mainly rutile with small amounts of sphene. Conventionally, fatty acids and particularly sodium oleate are extensively used in the flotation of colored minerals from feldspar ores with reasonable success. In this study, new reagents, oleoyl sarcosine and hydroxamate have been used to float colored impurities before and after magnetic separation. Oleoyl sarcosine is found to exhibit better results compared to fatty acids and hydroxamate. The mechanism of the action is elaborated on the basis of experimental data.

The success and efficiency of an approximation procedure depend on the quality of the initiating parameters such as bounds or seed values (guesses). Current approximation procedures commonly use bounds and guesses dictated by intuition rather then by mathematical consideration. The paper presents three ROR-bounding and six ROR-guessing approaches and examines their suitability on the examples of the typical project cash flow patterns.

"Since mercury is chemically similar to silver, it tends to dissolve along with the silver and gold during cyanide leaching. Ultimately, mercury is recovered along with the silver as mercury/silver/gold amalgam, which requires retorting to remove the mercury prior to refining the silver and gold. A possible approach to separating mercury from silver and gold in cyanide leach solutions is to take advantage of the replacement reaction between [Hg(CN)4]2- and Ag2S, which results in precipitation of mercury as HgS while dissolving silver as [Ag(CN)2]-. Results are presented demonstrating that mercury can be removed from cyanide solutions with high effectiveness while, at the same time, recovering additional silver in solution. Initial experiments with static flasks in the laboratory showed a high degree of mercury removal could be achieved. Results using actual metallurgical plant products in bottle roll tests indicate the process works on a larger scale, but also results in significant gold losses if the solution being treated has high gold levels, such as carbon stripping pregnant eluent solution. IntroductionThe dissolution of mercury along with precious metals during cyanide leaching is a long-standing problem, which can result in significant mercury toxicity issues (Washburn, 2003). Mercury is first dissolved by the cyanide solution, and then, since it has a great deal of chemical similarity to silver, it follows silver throughout the concentration and recovery processes, ultimately being recovered as a silver/ mercury amalgam when the metal is precipitated by either the Merrill-Crowe process or by electrowinning.While it would be desirable to either prevent mercury dissolution entirely while still allowing silver dissolution, or to selectively capture mercury before the precious-metals recovery step, there is not yet an effective and economically practical approach to doing this (Grosse, 2003; Ravichandran, 2004; Misra, 1998; Pai, 2000). There are a few processes that have been proposed, such as differential adsorption. While activated carbon, as used in the carbon-in-pulp process, is not highly selective between mercury and silver (Washburn, 2003), it may be possible to achieve some separation by selective elution of the carbon to produce high-mercury and low-mercury eluates (Bunney et al., 2010). Certain synthetic resins were shown to be selective for gold but are more expensive than carbon, requiring special equipment, and have not yet been shown to be selective for mercury (Grosse, 2003). There may be potential for differential dissolution approaches, as thiosulfate leaching does not dissolve mercury sulfides as readily as it dissolves gold (Oraby et al., 2010), and it is possible that it may be similarly more selective for dissolving silver relative to mercury. Some work has also been done with selective precipitants, such as sodium polythiocarbonates (Bucknam, 2007), and 1,3-benzenediamidoethanethiol (Matlock, 2002). Common problems with these approaches include introduction of a solid:liquid separation step, reagent costs, the need to measure the mercury concentration for process control for minimizing silver losses, and regulatory requirements to retort otherwise stable mercury concentrates."

Reducing the contribution of heavy- and light-duty diesel-powered equipment to concentrations of aerosols and gases is essential to industry’s efforts to improve air quality in underground mining operations. The results of this study demonstrated a potential of control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and repowering existing systems with advanced power packages to reduce contributions of diesel-powered vehicles to concentrations of diesel aerosols and criteria gases in underground mines. The implementation of viable exhaust aftertreatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental in the underground mining industry securing a clean, economical and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

Separation of refractory rock phosphate (P2O5 = 11.5%) from the Dalir area, Iran, containing quartz, calcite and other impurities, by calcination and flotation processes has been successfully used to upgrade the phosphate values. Petrographic studies of this ore showed that collophanite was the major phosphate mineral and the main gangue minerals were calcite, dolomite and quartz. The results of characterization studies showed that the liberation degree of apatite occurred below the average grain size of 140 µm. Preliminary flotation tests were used to process the phosphate samples. Results of preliminary flotation tests showed that they don?t contain any desirable efficiency (grade or recovery) of P2O5. Calcination was the best process for preconcentration of this ore. In the desliming stage, about 14.4% of total P2O5 was removed. Encouraging concentrate grades were obtained after flotation with anionic and cationic flotation, successively. The reagent schemes that have been used in this study consisted of COCO-amine acetate and fatty acid as silicate and apatite collectors, respectively, as well as fuel oil and anionic poly acryl amid as promoter collectors. The optimum pH values for direct and reverse flotations of phosphate were 11 and 6, respectively. Experiments conducted using d80=140 µm deslimed fractions has yielded an acceptable grade of more than 30% P2O5 with a recovery of more than 62%. Finally, a laboratory flowsheet for the processing of Dalir refractory phosphate ore has been proposed.

A glauconitic siltstone sample with a potash content of 10% is investigated as a potential potash source. The fine grain structure comprises potash bearing phases of glauconite, muscovite, and microcline. The as-received samples showed poor dissolution ~ 5%. Planetary ball milling was attempted for the dissociation of the underlying silicate structure for the potash release, and ~ 60% potash was obtained after 12-h milling. Mechanical activation (8 h, 60% NaOH) prior to heat treatment (600 °C, 30 min) was found successful in recovering more than 95%K values from glauconite. The final residue consists mainly of quartz, indicating a complete breakdown of the silicate matrix. The mechanical activation process followed is simple, adaptable, and less energyintensive compared to existing methods.

"A selective chlorination process using cuprous chloride (CuCl) was investigated for producing high-grade chalcocite (Cu2S) from chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) feed. The chalcopyrite feed was reacted with CuCl in the presence or absence of sulfur (S) at temperatures between 900 and 1,100 K for five hours under an argon gas atmosphere. The experimental results indicate that iron (Fe) was selectively removed from the chalcopyrite feed as ferrous chloride (FeCl2) at 1,100K and the mass percentage of Fe thus decreased from 31.5 percent in the feed to less than 0.05 percent in the residue, under certain conditions. As a result, high-grade Cu2S was obtained from chalcopyrite in a single step. This new selective chlorination of chalcopyrite using CuCl as a chlorinating agent is therefore feasible for producing high-grade Cu2S.IntroductionCurrently, blister copper (Cu) is commercially produced from sulfide ores by pyrometallurgical methods. These methods entail matte smelting and converting, with the removal of iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) as slag — mainly Fe2SiO4 — and sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas, respectively.In the pyrometallurgical method, as shown in Fig. 1 (Schlesinger et al., 2011), Fe is removed through two steps at high temperatures of around 1,500 K to reduce the loss of Cu during slag formation. However, the slag still contains 1 to 8 percent Cu. Therefore, Cu in the slag is recovered by slag treatment processes, after which the concentration of Cu in the slag decreases to around 0.4 to 1.3 percent. Although Cu is recovered, the slag that had undergone the treatment processes is difficult to use as a feedstock for ironmaking owing to the small amount of Cu remaining in the slag (Schlesinger et al., 2011).In addition, large amounts of SO2 gas are generated by the oxidation of S in the current Cu production process. The SO2 gas generated is captured and used to produce sulfuric acid (H2SO4). However, despite the development of SO2 gas-capture technologies, the emission of SO2 gas is still a problem in terms of environmental considerations.Several studies had been carried out in the past to overcome the drawbacks of the current process. The extraction of Cu from sulfide ores using a chlorination process is one alternative that had been investigated by several researchers. Most chlorination processes used chlorine gas (Cl2) as a chlorinating agent at temperatures between 573 and 1,023 K under an inert atmosphere (Donaldson and Kershner, 1962; Olsen et al., 1973; Kumar, Li and Warren, 1985, 1987; Kanari et al., 1999; Kanari, Gaballah and Allain, 2001)."

Public Law 91-190 - January I, 1970 states that, "The purposes of this Act are: To declare a national policy which will encourage productive and enjoyable harmony between man and his environment; to promote efforts which will prevent or eliminate damage to the environment and biosphere and stimulate the health and welfare of man; to enrich the understanding of the ecological systems and natural resources important to the Nation; and to establish a Council on Environmental Duality." The administrative aspects of this National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 have in essence established the requirement that all agencies of the Federal government assess the consequence of their actions with an Environmental Impact Statement. Furthermore, five states have already enacted environmental legislation, and others will surely follow. The Environmental Services Project Director for Dames and Moore has stated in the June issue of that company's publication, "Elements," that, "The nuclear power industry has perhaps been most affected to date by the Act [NEPAL but recent court decisions, legislative trends and general public concern will accelerate the spread of the Act's impact on other industries. Mining and petroleum are already involved in environmental affairs." There can be little doubt that within a very short time all environmental aspects of the minerals industry will be strictly regulated and monitored by some agency of Federal and/or state government. Indeed, it is probable that any future effort to extract natural resources will be contingent upon a favorable review of an Environmental Impact Statement. It is also quite possible that continuation of present operations will have to be justified on the basis of proof of an acceptable environmental impact. It is the objective of this paper to present some ways in which remote sensing technology can be applied toward an efficient collection of environmental data necessary for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement.

INTRODUCTION The term "Rapid Underground Excavation" is generally associated with high speed tunnel advance with large volumes of excavation, and indeed this is the type of work for which most of the recent innovations in methods and new machinery have been developed. However, the term applies as well to any underground excavation process that results in an earlier project completion than would be expected with conventional methods, and hopefully with a decrease in total unit excavation cost. Often significant progress has been made during the primary stages of an underground construction project and then an inordinate amount of time and effort has been expended on small units of "miscellaneous" excavation which has delayed the overall project completion and escallated overall unit costs. Construction at the Nevada Test Site of the Atomic Energy Commission for underground testing frequently requires significant amounts of so called "miscellaneous mining" such as short access drifts, cross cuts, alcoves, niches and concrete keyways. Many of the keyways must be excavated without disturbing the rock beyond the excavation lines and construction scheduling often dictates that much of the work must be accomplished without disturbing sensitive electronic equipment already installed. Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the silica collection efficiency of flooded-bed scrubbers with six different filter panel designs and at two operating velocities. Test results indicated that reductions in filter density negatively impacted respirable dust collection. Silica collection efficiency for the least dense filter was as much as 33 % lower than the collection efficiency of the densest filter. At the low operating velocity, the least dense filter allowed over 40% of the respirable silica dust in the scrubber intake air to pass through the unit, where it would be discharged back into the mine environment. Operation of the scrubber at the higher test air velocity increased silica collection efficiency, regardless of the filter panel tested. The density of the filter panels also impacted the quantity of air that is moved through the scrubber, with higher density filters reducing scrubber airflow. For each filter, the relationship between dust collection efficiency and air moving capacity must be considered to determine overall effectiveness for specific mine applications.

"With desert temperatures climbing high at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center near Tucson, AZ in September, a group of editors were given a reprieve from the sun and stepped inside the new Cat Minestar Command Center. The movie theater-like temperatures inside were a welcome relief, and the computer screens stationed around the room were an indication of not just how much things have evolved in the mining equipment sector, but also a peek into the future of where mining is headed.Equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar have always had to deal with peaks and valleys in demand that come with mining, perhaps never more so than in the last five years. Sudhanshu Singh, global product manager for Caterpillar, said that in one month in 2012, at the height of the mining Super Cycle, Caterpillar produced more than 150 large mining trucks (haul trucks that carry 136 t/150 st or more). By contrast, Caterpillar produced about 80 of those trucks in the full year of 2016. Between 2012 and 2016, Caterpillar saw its profits drop by 40 percent.“This shows how cyclical the industry is, and it is a testament to the strength of Caterpillar to be able to tolerate the wide swings,” said Singh. Demand for commodities is once again on the rise as are commodity prices with many signs pointing toward a recovery for the mining sector, and Caterpillar has positioned itself for the recovery. During its 2017 press event in September, company officials emphasized that Caterpillar has added strength in its technology divisions by forming new partnerships and adjusting its operating plan.“At the heart of our enterprise strategy is the operating & execution (O&E) model, a strategic framework to identify areas of the business that either create or consume the most value,” said Caterpillar chief executive officer, Jim Umpleby. “Using the O&E model as a guide, we gain a deeper understanding of where we have a competitive advantage, which is key to generating high returns.”"

The mining industry has waited a long time for the resurgence in commodity prices and demand for its products that it is now experiencing. Base and precious metals prices have reached levels not seen before. Coal prices have also shot up. And there are encouraging signs in the uranium market. China’s nearly out-of-control economic growth is said to be the leading driver for much of this resurgence. But demand for energy, metals and building materials in the United States and elsewhere are also major factors. The result is that expansions and new mines for nearly every commodity are in the works.

Power for mine operation in remote locations is usually provided by diesel generators. For gold mines where processing is normally desirable on-site, power requirements can be significant and the operating cost for diesel generation then becomes an important factor in mine feasibility. If a suitable site is available, a small hydroelectric power facility near the minesite can provide a significant portion of the mine power requirements. The hydrological, engineering and economic factors involved in small hydroelectric power development are described in this paper. Capital costs are minimized by run-of-river hydro development which does not require a dam and reservoir and has less environmental impact. During periods of low flow, diesel generators are used to make up the power demand. The hydrologic analysis required to determine unit energy costs is described and technical requirements for linking the hydroelectric power facility with diesel generation are outlined. Case studies are presented demonstrating the economic advantages of a small hydro installation. One case study is for a proposed gold mine in British Columbia and the second is a large operating gold mine overseas, for which the hydroelectric power scheme is presently under construction .
