PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The Big Walnut Augmentation Rickenbacker Interceptor project began in 1995with the preparation of the Scope of Services for the design of the Rickenbacker Interceptor, with service to and around the Rickenbacker Air Force base. The air base was soon to be placed under civilian control through a Port Authority, with an expected influx of businesses and services, requiring increased sanitary service capability. Due to political differences regarding annexation and other issues, the project was placed on hold. In mid 1996 the Scope of Services was rewritten with more emphasis on a tunneling option, but still only addressing the air base and surrounding tributary are a sanitary service requirements. The consultant selection process began in late 1996 with the Request for Statements of Qualifications issued in December. Three firms were selected to furnish proposals based on the revised Scope of Services that now included requirements for hydraulic modeling of the service areas and the Big Walnut Outfall (BWO) and an expanded soil investigation requirement. All three firms were requested to make presentations to the selection committee, with the committee selecting URS Greiner for further consideration and negotiation. A contract was entered into in August of 1997with URS Greiner. The major sub-consultants were Lachel and Associates, Inc., H.R.Gray and Associates and Solar Testing Laboratories, Inc. The project began with geological investigations, preliminary soil borings, well investigations, tributary area evaluations, hydraulic modeling of the BWO system and research into other projects planned for the Rickenbacker airport and surrounding area. The hydraulic modeling of the BWO and the proposed Rickenbacker Interceptor confirmed that the BWO suffered wet weather surcharging and would require augmentation to properly convey the future flows to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant(SWWTP). The project scope expanded to include evaluation of both the Rickenbacker Interceptor and the Big Walnut Augmentation projects. Both projects previously identified in the Capital Improvements Program. The work on the expanded scope for the Big Walnut Augmentation and the Rickenbacker Interceptor began with the evaluation of a parallel 2.75 meter (108") diameter augmentation sewer from SWWTP to S.R. 317and Parsons Avenue, then continuing east along S.R. 317 as the Rickenbacker Interceptor. This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2005 draws upon available information from literature, industry and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. It provides data on exploration budgets by global region and mineral commodity and identifies significant mineral discoveries and exploration target areas. It also discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based on these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2005. They include budgetary statistics provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) and information on regional and site-specific exploration activities in 2005 compiled by the USGS.

Diesel powered equipment has been operated in underground coal fir mare than 50 years. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are approximately 3,000 diesel units operating in underground coal mines in the United States. This number is expected to reach 5,000 diesel units in 250 coal mines by the year 2000. Also, there are approximately 5,000 diesel units operating in metal/nonmetal mines such as trine, potash and salt mines: and more than 3,000 diesel units operating in Canada. This increased popularity of diesel powered equipment over trolley wire, electric trailing cable or battery powered equipment is because of improved safety, greater mobility, higher productivity and increased power of diesel equipment. The operation if diesel powered equipment is not without challenges. Diesel engines generate exhaust emissions, in particular carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and diesel particulate matter that must be maintained at safe levels. The chief method to control ambient exposure has been dilution by ventilation. A new concept to ensure continued safe ambient emissions levels from diesel equipment in underground mines is the EMISSIONS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM™. The program encompasses all factors that will influence diesel emissions. By ESTABLISHING low tailpipe emissions through technology, such as clean engines, clean fuel selection, exhaust aftertreatment devices and filtration of the exhaust gases via the Dry System ™, this program ensures that the baseline emissions are at their lowest technically feasible concentrations. The DST Dry System™ exhaust conditioner reduces DPM by over 98%, as demonstrated through laboratory research at the West Virginia University. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions and odor are similarly reduced. MAINTAINING these low emissions requires an expanded training program for operators and mechanics, onboard feed-back devices and a maintenance program with special focus on events and faults that can alter emissions. Finally, an on-board emissions sampling system allows the mechanic to VERIFY emissions levels and help diagnose engine faults. If the tailpipe emissions fall outside an established limit for a particular equipment, corrective actions will be initiated.

INTRODUCTION Crude oil reserves in the United States are still very large, even though for many years they have not been sufficient to supply our entire domestic requirements. They are continuously being depleted as oil is pumped from the ground, but new discoveries and improved secondary and tertiary recovery methods are helping to reduce the rate of depletion. It is thus a slowly diminishing resource, but even as it is being consumed, immense reserves of oil are left behind as the so called "un-recoverable" portion of petroleum formations. Most oil fields can only obtain a 15 to 40% recovery of the original reservoir, and it is widely quoted that there are still about 300 billion barrels of this un-recoverable oil still in place (Mauch, 1980, etc.). With the present comparatively high oil prices, and the possibility of even higher future prices and short supply, this oil becomes an interesting potential reserve. Mining the petroleum formation would be one means of recovering at least a portion of this oil. The concept of oil mining is neither new nor limited to conventional oil fields, since the procedure could be equally employed with the otherwise difficult to produce heavy oil deposits, and the solid or semi-solid tar sands and diatomaceous hydrocarbon formations. Estimates place the U.S. tar sand resource at about 30 billion barrels, and heavy oil at 5-10 billion barrels (Unitar, 1982). Figure 1 graphically summarizes the heavy oil reserves based upon formation depth and characteristics, while Figure 2 shows their location. The US$1,850 million EastLink project is a 39km tollway and includes twin 3-lane,1.5km long, undrained driven tunnels. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley and so to help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. This paper describes several of the key issues in the tunnel design and construction, including: the integration of the temporary support design with the Contractor’s tunnel excavation and support procedures, including sharing of responsibility between the Designer and Contractor for support type selection and the production of a project specific rock mass classification system to enable more objective determination of ground conditions. detailed hydrogeological assessments during the design and construction phases to allow confirmation of design loads for the tunnel lining design and the various suite of waterproofing tools in order to meet the project inflow requirements. development of a pre-cast invert solution to the main tunnel secondary lining to enable faster lining construction and to minimize risks to the tunnel membrane associated with fixing reinforcement and construction traffic.

In 2002 the authors updated the MFire model developed by the US Bureau of Mines. MineFire, developed by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc. (MVS), uses the MFire model to perform mine fire simulations on typical mine ventilation networks. The MineFire program is capable of producing visual schematics and other analysis tools for input and output of the MFire model. The MFire model, however, was limited to 500 branches and 10 fans. This paper discusses the newly modified MFire model that is now capable of modeling over 5000 branches and over 400 fans among other expansions and improvements. Given the long history and proven track record of MFire, the expansion did not modify the core calculation methods or results. This paper focuses on a general discussion of the MFire program and issues encountered in expansion of the algorithm. An example large network with simulation results is discussed.

This study investigates the use of a horizontally- baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feedrate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

The Canada Line is a 19km long automated light rapid transit system with 16 stations in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The Concession was awarded to InTransitBC to design, build, partially finance, operate, and maintain the system for 35 years. The project must be complete by November 2009 to be ready for the 2010 Winter Olympics to be held in Vancouver and Whistler, BC. The bored tunnel section consists of 2.45 km of twin bored tunnel and 3 stations. The station work is limited to the excavations and temporary support necessary to facilitate the bored tunnel works. A joint venture between SNC-Lavalin Constructors Pacific and SELI (SSJV) has recently completed the design and construction of this section. Work for the bored tunnel commenced in November 2005 with shoring and excavation works for the tunnelling operations pit that will become Olympic Village Station and will be completed in the spring of 2008. The tunnels were driven with a 6m diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBM) and lined with 250mm thick, 5.3m diameter precast concrete segments. Seven hundred and fifty meters of each tunnel were driven through glacial and interglacial deposits of sand, silt, and clay with granitic boulders. The paper discusses the challenges faced in negotiating these soils which contained unforeseen geological conditions. These conditions were overcome by developing a systematic approach to Risk Management that included thorough risk assessments, regular risk management meetings with the participation of two of the world?s leading EPBM experts, Professor Eisenstein and Professor Kovári, and by the ability of the construction team to effectively analyze and mitigate problems.

This paper provides estimates of large-scale temperature gradients that can be used to support modeling of natural convection and cold-trap processes in thermally perturbed drifts. Temperature influences estimates of the quantity and chemistry of water contacting engineered components (e.g., drip shields and waste packages) in a potential high-level waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Temperature gradients drive natural convection and cold-trap processes, which could affect the distribution, quantity, and chemistry of liquid-phase water contacting drip shields (waste packages).The confluence of high temperatures, liquid-phase water, and high chloride may lead to corrosion of drip shields and waste packages. An overview of the evolution of environmental conditions in thermally perturbed drifts is presented to provide a context for the estimates of temperature gradients. A mountain-scale conduction-only model is used to estimate temperature gradients and temperature differences for a drift located at the center of a potential repository. Thermohydrologic models and heat transfer algorithms are used to evaluate the reasonableness of the conduction-only results. Estimates of temperature using an in-drift heat transfer algorithm account for the possibility of drift degradation and formation of a rubble pile on the drip shield. Temperature differences between the center and ends of the drift are estimated to rapidly increase to 80 °C soon after repository closure. That temperature difference decreases over time to 15 °C after 10,000 years. Local temperature gradients are generally estimated to be less than 0.2°C/m, though the gradients can be much larger near changes in lithology and near the end of the drift. The estimates of temperature gradients do not account for intermediate- and small-scale variations, such as those influenced by differences in heat loads between waste packages, intra-layer variations in thermal properties of the surrounding fractured rock, or localized drift degradation.

At least three hydroelectric tunnels constructed during the last decade through the lower Himalayan region in India have met with serious problems of supporting in squeezing ground conditions. Steel ribs under went intolerable deformations requiring rectification to provide space for concrete lining which delayed the projects inordinately. In an attempt to choose a rational method of predicting rock load, the authors have compared rock loads estimated from various classification systems and elasto-plastic theory with observed values. The deficiencies of the classification systems have been highlighted to show that the combination of elastoplastic theory and tunnel instrumentation programme provides better guidelines for the design of tunnel supports in squeezing ground conditions.

The 1997 New Year’s Day Rogue River flood near Medford, Oregon, USA, entered historic channels, eroded a 150-foot-wide buffer, and captured an inactive gravel pond located within the channel migration zone. Channel redirection caused by pit captures threatened adjacent inactive gravel ponds. In response to this capture, a stakeholders group of concerned individuals and organizations was formed. This group ultimately developed a rehabilitation plan, which conformed to the Rogue River’s geomorphic trends. A two-dimensional model, FLO-2D, was used to evaluate channel splits, flood storage, backwater, and future conditions. Modeling results coupled with trend analysis were used to create a stable design where stream barbs, gravel redistribution, a channel outfall spillway, bendway weirs, bank reshaping, and revegetation were integrated into a single plan for a three-mile reach. The quick action by the stakeholders group averted further damage to the Rogue River system and surrounding environment. The project has preserved three miles of mainstem habitat, one mile of side channel habitat, and protected ten gravel ponds from pit capture.

Thiosulfate offers a non-toxic alternative to cyanide for processing gold ores. The mechanism of leaching gold using ammoniacal thiosulfate solution is driven by the Cu(II)-Cu(I) redox couple and is complicated by competing ligands such as NH3 and S2O32-. It is shown that an understanding of the copper speciation and sulfur speciation is required to optimise this system. This paper presents Eh-pH and speciation diagrams for varying concentrations of Cu(II), S2O32- and NH3 and discusses the conditions under which various copper and sulfur species are stable.

The need to increase ore recovery and pillar stability caused the Magmont Mine staff to investigate the use of sandfill to accomplish both tasks. The use of hydraulically stowed classified mill tailings as a subsidence preventative will be discussed as well as the use of sandfill in pillar recovery and as a part of the regular mining cycle.

Arizona construction aggregate industry remains in the crosshairs of public debate, caught between the need for aggregate-based building materials and alternative, high-value land-uses. To better manage lands and improve land-use decisions, the Arizona State Land Department has need for a system to assess potential aggregate resources on State Trust lands, and assign dollar values accordingly. Thereafter aggregate values can be compared to residential, commercial, agricultural, recreational, and habitat values -- in a determination of highest and best land-use.

“Old Borate,” located in the Calico Mountains east of Barstow, California, lead domestic colemanite production from 1884 through 1907. Mineral exploration at “Old Borate” in the early 1980's, examined borate mineralization in Tertiary lacustrine strata. Surface sample and drill hole locations, geology and structure, were hand-drafted on paper maps. To re-evaluate this data, the information was digitized using Geographic Information Systems software. Digital Elevation Model based terrain modeling integrated surficial samples with drill hole data to locate favorable drilling targets. Structural relationships were used to identify hypothetical resources formed by the leaching of boron from surface exposures, redeposited at depth.

Charleston Water System?s Daniel Island Extension Tunnel, initially thought to be the simplest of the four replacement tunnels to design and build, became the most challenging after the discovery of an unexpected 30-ft thick lens of sand in the normally consistent Cooper Marl while sinking a shaft on Daniel Island. This paper will explore the challenges involved with determining the extent of the unforeseen lens of sand, the accelerated boring program, and the redesign of the vertical alignment?keeping the alignment between the sand layer and the bottom of the Cooper River. It will describe how the challenges were overcome, and how the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor were able to team together to achieve the desired results.

Although salmonid fishes (including Pacific salmon and trout) have only intermediate sensitivity to copper (Cu) for traditional toxicity endpoints (survival, growth, and reproduction) and thus do not ?drive? the freshwater Cu criteria (e.g., see species-sensitivity ranking in US EPA 2007), Cu concentrations as low as 1 to 2 µg/L have been reported to impair olfaction (the sense of smell) in salmonids in laboratory experiments using dilute fresh water (see references in Meyer and Adams 2010 and DeForest et al. 2011). Olfaction is crucial to predator avoidance, recognition of kin, and reproductive synchronization (Baldwin et al. 2003); and Cu is of general ecotoxicological concern because it can be present in acid/mine rock drainage, industrial and municipal effluents, agricultural runoff, and urban stormwater runoff (Meyer et al. 2007). Therefore, there is public concern that the current regulation of Cu in surface waters is not stringent enough to protect salmonid fishes against olfactory impairment (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). Because the toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry [e.g., acute toxicity of Cu generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ + Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase; Meyer et al. 2007], hardness-based freshwater criteria for metals are lower at lower water hardness. The recently-developed biotic ligand model (BLM) explicitly takes into account all four of those water chemistry parameters and the concentrations of other major inorganic cations (Na+, K+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-) to predict the acute toxicity of cationic metals (e.g., Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) to aquatic organisms; and the BLM has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to calculate acute and chronic national freshwater criteria for Cu (US EPA 2007). Consistent with observations of Cu toxicity to aquatic organisms, BLM-based Cu criteria generally are lower at lower pH, water hardness, alkalinity, and DOC concentrations. Therefore, although threshold concentrations for olfactory impairment by Cu can be low in dilute fresh waters, the corresponding hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria for the same waters also tend to be low. This leads to a logical question: Are Cu criteria already protective against impairment of olfaction in salmonid fishes, thus obviating the need to decrease those criteria even lower to protect against adverse effects to this physiological/ecotoxicological endpoint? Herein, we demonstrate that in all studies conducted to date, the US EPA?s BLM-based freshwater Cu criteria would have been protective against olfactory impairment in salmonid fishes, but the US EPA?s hardness-based criteria would not always have been protective. This distinction is important because all 50 States in the USA still use hardness-based Cu criteria in their water quality standards, and only some of the States allow use of the BLM to calculate site-specific Cu criteria. Additionally, in the absence of empirical results for calibration of a saltwater Cu-olfactory model, we demonstrate that a proposed unified freshwater-saltwater Cu-olfactory BLM predicts the US EPA?s current saltwater Cu criteria would be protective against olfactory impairment caused by Cu in sea water.

An uneven gas distribution through the burden layers inside a blast furnace (BF) results in abnormal gas resistance or pressure changes. Rapid variations in the abnormal gas resistance will lead to the occurrence of channeling. A visualization technology mainly made of pressure distribution was developed to predict BF channeling phenomena in this study. The real-time data of BF shaft pressure was used to create a 3D visual model by neural network algorithms and 3D real-time BF pressure changes were observed. The root mean square deviation (RMSD) of the BF shaft pressure was used as an index to set up the predicting criteria of channeling occurrence with the opening of BF Annular Gap Element (AGE), and a predicting system based on the criteria was built. The two criteria for the channeling alarm are the RMSD of the BF shaft pressure (> 0.15 kg/cm2 ) at the upper two levels, and the AGE opening being greater than 60%. This system has been installed in the China Steel Corporation (CSC) BFs, and the test results showed that a prediction can be obtained 8 to 16 min ahead of channeling allowing sufficient time for the operator to adjust the BF operation in order to avoid the occurrence of channeling.

Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An invitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold(which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14%within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%)throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

Impregilo/SA Healy JV recently completed this Project using the first slurry shield TBM’s in the United States. The Project used two TBM’s to mine 18,000 feet in sands, gravels, and silty alluvial materials under the Willamette River and downtown Portland, Oregon. This paper discusses alignment and geological conditions, equipment selection and plant setup, and tunnel excavation means and methods, parameters, and results. Extensive hyperbaric operations were required and will also be discussed.
