The enthusiasm with which individuals have participated in mineral exploration in the development of this country testifies to the fact that there was once a very real probability of making a worthwhile discovery. Over the years, the discovery and subsequent exploitation of the accessible ore deposits have made the finding of new deposits progressively more difficult. Present day mineral exploration has evolved from the lone prospector with the grubstaker behind him to a very costly and complex business, involving large sums of money and a staff of experts in the fields of exploration technology. Exploration today must be carried out on a large scale to be profitable. With the involvement of large amounts of capital, there has been a good deal of interest in methods of optimization of the allocation of the resources of a firm 'engaged in mineral exploration. As a step toward this, mathematical models have been formulated which are designed to quantify those variables of mineral exploration in such a manner that they can be integrated with all phases of the firms operations so as to optimize its profit objective or more simply, to make exploration more efficient and effective.

Land use impact assessment for mining is time- consuming and expensive. Because of mining’s impact on biodiversity, land use assessment methods that evaluate biodiversity are important for mining land use impact assessments. Remote sensing, in particular satellite multispectral sensing platforms such as Sentinel‑2 and the Landsat mission series, have been used to assess and quantify biodiversity through proxy variables such as NDVI (Peña-Lara et al., 2022). The objective of this paper is to present results of a comparative study of land use and biodiversity based on multispectral satellite observations and production data from copper and cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We quantify the relationship between different spectral bands and vegetative indices and the production data provided by the mining companies and measure correlations. The results suggest that remote sensing could be a cost- effective means of assessing biodiversity impacts of mining.

To obtain a reliable comparison between conical and cylindrical separatory vessels used in dynamic dense medium separation systems, the following studies were made: (1) study of the swirling flow in conical and cylindrical vessels using laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV); (2) study of the behaviour of suspensions of magnetite and ferrosilicon in water in both separators. It was found that: (a) the tangential velocity profiles differ in conical and cylindrical vessels: in a conical cyclone free vortex conditions affect the largest part of the vessel, while in a cylindrical vessel, the motion approaches that of a forced vortex, i.e. that of a centrifuge; (b) the conical vessel manifests higher centrifugal acceleration and very strong densifying; the density differential, and hence the density gradient inside the vessel is large; (c) the cylindrical vessel manifests lower centrifugal acceleration and low densifying, i.e. low density differentials, and hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is small; (c) due to greater densifying, the density cut-point in cyclones is higher than the operating medium density, while in cylindrical vessels the density cut-point is closer to the medium density. The results provide an interesting description of the differing behaviour of conical and cylindrical vessels and help explain the differences in performance between the two types of separators.

"The proposed Channel Tunnel is a critical component of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Central Bayside System Improvements Project (CBSIP), which is a key element of a $6.9-billion sewer system improvement program to upgrade its aging and seismically vulnerable wastewater facilities. The tunnel will provide gravity conveyance and storage of combined sewage flows from the northeast sector of San Francisco, CA to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. The tunnel will be approximately 2.7 km (1.7 miles) long and 7.3 m (24 ft) in internal diameter. It will utilize a single-pass precast concrete segmental lining system. Tunneling challenges include excavating with pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology through highly variable ground conditions including the Franciscan Complex (rock and mélange), clayey/silty sands, stiff to hard clay (Old Bay Clay) and mixed-face conditions. The project will also require several deep shafts that will be technically challenging. Project backgroundThe SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco, CA that provides municipal power, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco.San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. The sewer system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1,600 km (1,000 miles) of collection sewers, 28 pump stations and three wastewater treatment plants. After decades of service, much of the system is nearing the end of its useful life.The existing system is also vulnerable to seismic damage. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC wastewater infrastructure was extensive. This included the 3,415 m (11,200-ft) long, 1.7m (66-in.) diameter Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the conveyance system. The Channel Force Main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. It is antiquated, not pile-supported and not constructed to current seismic codes. There is also currently no conveyance redundancy for north/central bayside flows to the treatment plant. Figure 1 shows the SFPUC’s wastewater collection system, the existing Channel Force Main and the project location."

Mineral resource classification relies on the expert assessment of a qualified person (QP) to determine which blocks of a 3D mineral resource model are classified as measured, indicated, or inferred. The decision is often based on a combination of quantitative parameters related to the estimation process and qualitative decisions based on previous experience or preconceptions not captured in the numerical model. As such, the procedure is subject to inconsistency, that is, blocks with similar qualities may end up in different categories, mainly due to the subjective nature of the approach. In this paper, we present a methodology to assist the qualified person in this task by clustering blocks with similar parameters and then classifying them into categories in a consistent and automatic manner that only requires the specification of a few hyper-parameters. The result is a consistent classification into resource categories comparable to the result of a classification done by a qualified person but fully consistent and generated in a short time frame. The procedure begins with repeatedly sub-sampling the block model to determine a distance matrix using an unsupervised random forest approach and then clustering the blocks using the associated distance matrix. Then, all the blocks in the model are classified using a supervised random forest approach, which gives a probability of belonging to each class. The initial class can be determined from the class probabilities. Support vector classification with a radial basis function kernel is utilized to smooth the boundaries between classes and define the final classification. An approach to tune the hyper-parameters of smoothing is provided. The methodology is demonstrated with two examples from two gold deposits. Results are comparable to the classification done by the project qualified person using conventional methods.

The State of Minnesota is interested in stimulating the development of clay resources and recently supported a two year project to collect data on geological, mineralogical, processing, economic and environmental aspects of such potential developments. This paper presents the .various process options adopted on the bulk samples collected from the Minnesota River Valley area which is a primary deposit and contains a major silica fraction. A standard test flowsheet involving degritting, dispersion, HGMS, and cycloning was developed and for some samples yielded an acceptable filler grade product. Secondary streams containing relatively high grade kaolin but of coarse size were also obtained. Improvement in particle size distribution and in physical properties related to paper product specifications (brightness, viscosity) were obtained by size reduction processes. Market and economic considerations for kaolin consumption in the upper Midwest are analyzed. Current markets for paper grade kaolin in Minnesota were briefly discussed.

"Canopy air curtains on roof bolting machines have been proven to protect miners from respirable dust, preventing their overexposure to dust. Another desired application for canopy air curtains is in the compartments of shuttle cars. The challenges faced in developing the design of canopy air curtains for shuttle cars include mine ventilation rates in tandem with the shuttle car tram speeds. The resulting cab airspeeds may exceed 182 m/min (600 fpm), as found in the present study conducted in a central Appalachian underground coal mine by U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers. Prior research and laboratory testing had indicated that successfully protecting a miner in high air velocities is difficult, because the clean air from the canopy air curtain is unable to penetrate through the high-velocity mine air. In this study, the dust concentrations to which a shuttle car operator was exposed were measured, and air velocities experienced by the operator were measured as well using a recording vane anemometer. The results indicate that the highest exposure to respirable dust, 2.22 mg/m3, occurred when the shuttle car was loading at the continuous miner, where the average airspeed was 48 m/min (157 fpm). While tramming, the operator was exposed to 0.77 mg/m3 of respirable dust with an average airspeed of 62 m/min (203 fpm). This study indicates that a canopy air curtain system can be designed to greatly reduce an operator’s exposure to respirable dust by providing clean air to the operator, as the majority of the operator’s dust exposure occurs in air velocities slower than 61 m/min (200 fpm). IntroductionThe U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) issued contract #200-2015-63485 to develop a canopy air curtain for coal mine shuttle cars with Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Salem, Begley and Ross, 2016). The proposed design maintains a design similar to that of a roof bolter canopy air curtain by providing filtered air through a blower over the operator. The plenum, which will provide uniform airflow over the operator, is anticipated to be built into the shuttle car canopy. One of the main interferences with a canopy air curtain is ventilation airflow perpendicular to the plenum airflow (Engel, Johnson and Raether, 1987). This ventilation airflow can shear the downward flow from the plenum, and this shear can reduce the effectiveness of the canopy air curtain by either disrupting the downward flow or allowing contaminated mine air into the canopy air curtain zone of protection."

This project involves the reconstruction of a 1,100 ft. long by 75 ft. wide segment of an existing 4 to 5 track subway under Northern Boulevard in the Borough of Queens in New York City. The project includes widening the existing subway to permit the construction of new inbound and outbound subway (T1 and T2) ramps adjacent to and under existing operating tracks. The plan of the project is shown in Fig. 1. Existing tall buildings along the job site and a contaminated groundwater plume under an adjacent rail yard required construction of slurry concrete walls along the east and west construction limits. Groundwater cutoff across the north and south construction limits of the subway was achieved by jet grout walls built across the subway invert slab between existing track and third rails. The work involved dewatering the construction site to a depth of about 50 ft. below street grade. This is a four year project and includes extensive work to maintain and protect subway and vehicular traffic of over half a million commuters a day through the work area. The project cost was $160,000,000.

The abstract highlights that hearing loss is an occupational disease caused by noise exposure in the workplace. The study investigates noise-induced hearing loss among miners in underground coal mines in Turkey, considering factors like occupation, age, and exposure time. The research employs logistic regression analysis to reveal the relationship between hearing loss and these factors. The findings suggest that occupational groups and duration of noise exposure significantly affect hearing loss. Miners in production groups and those exposed to noise for 10-14 years have a higher risk. The study concludes that age does not significantly increase the probability of hearing loss.

In an effort to advance the science underlying ground control engineering, researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are frequently involved in field studies at collaborating mines. Often, these field studies involve visiting the mine site, instrumentation installation, and data acquisition. Each of these aspects involve potential risks to NIOSH employees. As an organization whose mission it is to promote the health and safety of mine workers, the health and safety of our workforce is paramount. This paper provides documentation of the best practices followed by NIOSH employees who are tasked with visiting and conducting work at underground and surface mines. This includes Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved training, mine site specific training, and hazards associated with all aspects of mining that could be encountered by the employee. Additionally, this paper details best practices associated specifically with instrumentation installation including the mitigation of hazards associated with the proper equipment handling, drilling, and the mine environment. The information showcased in this paper can be used as considerations for industry practitioners such as mine operators, consultants, and academic researchers engaged in the installation of instrumentation in the field. Furthermore, the best practices detailed in this paper can be used as a foundation for agreements made between mine operators and researchers to ensure safety procedures will be followed while on mine property. This will result in enhanced safety of both researchers involved in field studies as well as mine employees tasked with assisting and accompanying those researchers.

We have lived through a period of strong metal pricing during the past eight to 10 years. Copper has been hovering in the range of $3-$4/lb during much of the past eight years, averaging close to $3.30/lb. Gold increased steadily from less than $300/oz levels in the early 2000s, reaching almost $1,890/oz in the third quarter of 2011, before tempering back down to the $1,200-1,400/oz range in 2013. Iron ore prices started to rise in 2005 before the staggering increases experienced in 2008- 2010, reaching almost $190/metric ton in early 2011. During the past four years, iron ore prices have ranged from $100-180/t, averaging approximately $140/t. In the aftermath of such a run, it is perhaps too easy to forget where we have come from: The copper price averaged just 77 cents/lb during the six-year period from 1998 to 2003, and averaged just over $1/lb from 1989 to 1997. The gold price averaged $350/oz during the 10-year period from 1994 to 2003. Even more dramatically, iron ore traded in the range of $10-$15/t between 1985 and 2004. So, we have seen sustained, three- to four-fold increases in copper and gold prices, and 8 to 10-fold increases in iron ore prices.

This study compares three different techniques — decision tree, artificial neural network (ANN) and multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) — for predicting blast-induced ground vibrations in some Indian tunneling projects. The models’ performance was also compared with site-specific conventional predictor equations. A database consisting of 137 vibration records was randomly divided into training and testing sets for model generation. The results indicate that the decision tree is best suited to predicting vibrations. Furthermore, the decision tree suggests that the intensity of near-field ground vibrations is mainly affected by the total charge fired in a round, whereas the intensity of far-field vibrations is governed by maximum charge per delay and charge per hole.

A method for estimating geotechnical rock loads for shallow cut and cover subway stations is presented. Localized geotechnical conditions lead to extreme variations in rock loading on the walls of subway structures. Actual lateral rock stress on these structures can range from near zero to over four times the vertical in-situ rock stress. The primary factors affecting the actual lateral stress are intact and rock mass mechanical properties, excavation sequence, localized tectonic conditions, and potential future adjacent structures. The authors recommend using the AASHTO code value of 65 pounds per cubic foot (10 kN/m3) during concept design, followed by numerical analysis of rock wedges and stress measurement for final design.

The two most stringent parameters for in place fracturing of rock are the lack of any initial void space in the rock which to expand into and the ability to gain access only through drill holes. These two restrictions have proven so severe that as of today the only proven techniques for efficient fracturing are the contained nuclear detonation and hydrofracing. Both of these methods have highly developed technologies for their application. Hydrofracing has been a standard oil field practice for two decades, and the experience gained from a couple hundred underground nuclear detonations has resulted in a thorough understanding of the phenomenology of cavity and chimney formation. What is still lacking is a practical method to create a suit- able degree of fracturing for those ore bodies which do not meet the application criteria for either the nuclear explosion or hydrofracing. Nuclear applications must be restricted to thick ore deposits so as to take advantage of chimney collapse height--preferable in excess of 200 feet thick. Other requirements such as ground shock, containment, and radioactive contamination further reduce the number of sites that prudently can be selected.

In May of 1984, it was decided that Outokumpu Oy would design and build a new nickel flotation mill to process ore from the newly discovered Enonkoski mine in eastern Finland. Since there hart peen a number of successful process charges in the existing mills, the design effort included the study and incorporation of several new developments, including all-autogenous grinding, "flash flotation", lane cell roughing, large cell cleaning and a computer-based, profit optimizing, process control system. The paper discusses the background and results of those studies, and a description of the resulting mill which will begin production in 1986.

The Australian coal industry over recent years has experienced the situation whereby exploration and mine development are moving into geographical areas where the coal seams have never been mined to any extent in the past, if at all, and particularly where there is no history of experience in preparation of these seams. Additionally, the demands have been such that the development of a mine up to production stage should proceed with minimum delay. This is a situation which is of some importance and concern, in view of the coal quality requirements now experienced within world markets which can only be met, in most cases, by careful preparation. Costs are such that the preparation plant should operate as required by the situation and with maximum efficiency, which means that laboratoty information of breakage and washability characteristics which are required for preparation plant design should be accurate and available as soon as possible, even to a certain extent during the progress of the exploration.

Recently, the North American mining industry experienced a severe recession, forcing managers to take dramatic steps to cut costs and compete in the difficult international market. Some of these steps were closing mines, reducing work forces, renegotiating wage agreements, and purchasing the most productive equipment. Managers are now looking beyond these traditional avenues and are focusing more on advanced technology. In the present environment, it is essential that mine operators obtain the maximum use of capital expended on equipment. However, mine workers do not obtain maximum efficiency or productivity from equipment because the adverse and hazardous mine environment impedes human performance. Also, the efficient use of large, complex machines calls for levels of precision that many times are beyond the capability of even highly trained miners. A possible solution to this problem is a machine that mines without operators - autonomous mining machines. However, numerous problems confront researchers who are attempting to develop such equipment. Some mining tasks are not always composed of a series of cyclic motions readily performed by factory floor robots. In addition, mining takes place in the geological environment where conditions are highly variable and unpredictable. As a result, these machines must be able to sense and adapt to variations in operating tasks and environment. Considerable autonomous vehicle research has been completed, especially for defense. However, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has not advanced to practical application yet (King, 1988) and mining research is necessary in areas: representing mining specific knowledge; •analyzing and reasoning about sensor data in the mining environment; and •discovering completely new mining methods or new approaches to existing methods that become apparent when we remove the constraints imposed by the necessity of human operators. A specific machine, the LHD, can be used to show the problems for researchers who are attempting to develop autonomous machines for mining. This author chose the LHD because it can borrow concepts developed for autonomous navigation by military programs. But considerable mining research is also required. Furthermore, studies done at the Henderson mine, in Colorado, show autonomous LHD 's promise cost and safety benefits (King, 1988). At Henderson, LHDs load ore from draw points, tram to an ore pass, dump and return, or switch to another draw point. An autonomous LHD must sense vehicle position along the route, relate sensor data to stored-map information, to determine location, follow drift center lines, plan paths between dump position and initiate appropriate control commands, sense vehicle operating status and vehicle health, key on features or targets for special tasks like high speed turns, perform end of travel tasks (loading and dumping), and detect and avoid obstacles. These goals are similar to those for shuttle cars, trucks, and front-end loaders. Therefore, much of the technology is transferable. Each Henderson LHD extracts six to 40 dippers from each of a series of draw points. The LHD transports the ore to an ore pass within 55 m (180 ft) of the draw point, making the longest round trip 110 m (360 ft). The LHDs have very fast hydraulic dumping and loading systems that reduce the round trip cycle to less than one minute. Even though the LHD is capable of 500 trips per shift, the average production is 300 dippers. Man trip and lunch reduce available operating time to 6.5 hours per shift. Mucking difficulties (setting large boulders aside), operator breaks for activities like talking shop, and cleaning and smoothing roads further reduce operating time. Supervised autonomy can reduce the number of operating units by increasing operating time per shift since computer controlled machines can operate during lunch and between shifts and reduce operator errors. If dippers per shift increase from 300 to 350 (long-range goals are 500 dippers per shift), constant production requires only 10 operating LHDs and two spares. Manpower requirements drop from 24 to four by controlling five machines from one workstation. A review of technology available from the Autonomous Land Vehicle, the Advanced Ground Vehicle Technology, the Ground Surveillance Robot, and other programs, show the following differences between others work and mining industry needs: •If we focus initially on mobile haulage vehicles, we can navigate from a map. We do not need to explore. •We can modify the environment to reduce the navigation requirements. •We have a harsher environment than any of the research programs have encountered. •Our equipment must operate faster and more precisely than present AVs. •Our equipment must operate reliably over long periods of time. •We must have better onboard machine health monitoring and diagnostics. •The AV programs do not address geosensing. •The major AV programs are not cost-effective. For example, we cannot afford the computer power for robust image processing, yet. To computer control an LHD, we must replace the guidance and monitoring skills of experienced operators with sensors, computing hardware, interfaces, and several software mod¬ules. The adaptation of pelletizing processes involves the coordination of various factors such as temperatures, gas flows, productions, etc., in order to obtain optimum performance. The consequent problems are considerable due to the large number involved as well as the lack of knowledge of their correlation. It is therefore essential to establish a fundamental theory which takes into account the heat transfer phenomena and the secondary factors which are relevant to the properties of the product. Straight grate and grate kiln pelletizing processes involve heating of a stationary bed on a travelling grate. The heat transfer conditions are therefore of primary importance. This is why this article pays particular attention to conditions which obtain when a stationary bed is heated, in which certain special reactions occur. The conclusions drawn from this penetration of the heat transfer phenomena can be expressed in postulates acting as guide-lines for the establishment of proto-typal processes. Examples of elaborating such processes are also given in the article. Some operational experience at LKAB are also given.
