"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The operational safety of long and very long rail tunnels represents a key issue in all development stages, including design, construction, commissioning and operation. The spectrum of potential threats is very broad and challenging. These issues can only be mastered by means of a proper combination of a number of safety measures at various levels. This paper focuses on the specific safety issues and the extremely challenging conditions characterizing very long and deep tunnels. They include a significantly increased risk during operation that the incident train cannot exit the tunnel by its own means, long self-rescue and rescue distances, the presence of a number of trains, possibly mixed traffic as well as significant thermal issues. Amberg Engineering is strongly involved in the design and construction of most long and very long rail tunnels in Europe, including in particular the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT), Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel (LTF) and the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT). The combined experience arising from these tunnels forms an invaluable body of expertise, which is summarized in this paper. The focus is on shared issues with practical relevant examples and project-specific solutions. Special attention will be devoted to the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will be operational by mid-2016 and will be the longest infrastructure tunnel worldwide. VERY LONG TUNNELS IN EUROPE Overview From the point of view of safety, tunnels in excess of about 20 km exhibit a significantly increased risk that incident trains could stop within the tunnel. This is related to the European Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) on rolling stock, to be discussed in the chapter on rescue stations. This paper will specifically focus on the following longest tunnels in construction or operation, listed in Table 1."

The Upper Hidden Basin Diversion (UHBD) tunnel was driven approximately 1.2 miles by the drill-and-blast method primarily through massive granite bedrock geology for the Kodiak Electric Association, Inc. (KEA) in Kodiak, Alaska. The tunnel was driven from both portals with a constant 11-ft straight-leg horseshoe cross-section. The design and construction of the tunnel was driven by logistics and weather conditions due to its remote location and the rugged terrain of the project setting. This paper will discuss the successful completion of a challenging project over a ve-year period from preliminary planning through the design and construction phases.

The study area is located in the NW of Uluborlu (Isparta). Massive limestones and alluvial deposits form the lithological units of the study area. The average thickness of the alluvium deposit consisting mainly of light brown - red colored and fine grained clastic sediments which derived from the limestone is about 10 meters. The aim of this study to investigate the uses of this alluvial sediments as tile - brick material. For this aim, disturbed and undisturbed samples have been taken from different depths in the alluvial deposits. Mineralogical compositions have been determined by XRD and major oxide contents by XRF. Laboratory experiments have been carried out to determine the technological properties of the samples. The selected major oxide contents of samples vary between A12O3 (24.6 - 24.12 wt %), CaO (0.76 - 4.27 wt %), Fe2O3 (10.21 - 10.29 wt %), MgO2 (1.25 - 1.51 wt %). CaCO3 and MgCO3 values calculated from the geochemical analyses, are between 1.55 - 1.62 and 2.62 - 3.17 respectively. The ratios of grain size of the samples are 82 % for < 0.2 mm and 5 % for > 3 mm. Geochemical analyses and technological features of the samples indicate that these fine grained sediments of alluvial deposit are suitable in terms of uses as tile - brick material. The potential reserve of this tile - brick material has been determined as 40 million tones.

A number of relatively recent factors associated with the design of new metallurgical processing plants have made the effective training of operators a requirement for a successful start-up. Some of these factors include large capital investment in a minimum of processing lines, highly complex process control systems, and stringent regulations on plant effluent, to name a few. More than ever, operating mistakes during the start-up phase can lead to substantial delays in achieving design production, as well as problems with government authorities if permit limits are exceeded. The only way to assure your return on plant investment is to ensure new plant operators have the knowledge to properly run the plant from the outset. A comprehensive set of operating manuals specifically targeted for plant operators and foreman, written by experienced operating personnel, is the only effective way to provide the necessary information for start-up-related training.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine for analysis and display on the surface. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in collaboration with Signal Peak Energy (SPE), LLC, Bull Mountains No. 1 Mine, operated a TBS during mining of two bleederless, longwall panels. This paper describes the gas analysis data and its interpretation. As verified by the TBS, coal at the SPE mine tends to oxidize slowly. It was known that a reservoir of low-oxygen concentration atmosphere developed about 610 m (2,000 ft) behind the longwall face. A bleederless ventilation system facilitates formation of an inert atmosphere in this longwall gob and decreases the likelihood of spontaneous combustion. Connections of the mine atmosphere to the surface through subsidence cracks could allow airflow into the longwall gob, revive coal oxidation and increase spontaneous combustion risk. The atmospheric composition of the sealed areas was homogeneous, except in the immediate vicinity of suspected ingassing points. The TBS verified that gases within the partially sealed, bleederless longwall gob expanded into the longwall tailgate area when barometric pressure decreased. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the back return airflow at the longwall tailgate was observed to increase by a factor of three and possibly up to 10 times the typical background concentration of 0.5 to 1.0%, depending on the size of the longwall gob and the magnitude of barometric pressure decrease. TBS have the inherent disadvantage of slow response time due to travel time of the gas samples and sequential gas analyses. A TBS or similar continuous monitoring system could be beneficial in detecting and providing warning of potentially hazardous gas concentrations, if the slow response time of the system is always understood.

The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) is part of the Ottawa River Action Plan and will greatly reduce the frequency of sewage overflows into the Ottawa River during storms. The project consists of the design and construction of two TBM tunnels running EastWest (EWT) and NorthSouth (NST) along 6.2 km in total, and multiple shafts and support buildings. Contractor Dragados Tomlinson JV (DTJV) was awarded the 169 million CAD construction contract in 2016 and the CSST will be in operation in 2020. Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP), supported by Intecsa-Inarsa, was responsible for the detailed design of the precast concrete tunnel lining as well as the geotechnical risk management program. This paper addresses TBM selection, critical tunnel sections, geotechnical risk management and rock mass grouting as a geotechnical risk mitigation measure. The depressing effects of different inorganic chemicals on the flotation of pyrite have been investigated in this study. The results of the flotation tests indicate that pyrite can be depressed by oxidizing as well as reducing agents under controlled conditions of pH and reagent dosage. Oxidizing reagents such as potassium chromate and potassium dichromate were found to cause complete depression of pyrite in the acidic pH range. These effects are similar to those obtained in the pyrite-cyanide system. A less stable oxidant, potassium permanganate, inhibited the flotation of pyrite at a concentration as low as 0.1 mol/L at all pH values, Addition of reducing chemicals such as ferrous chloride or manganous sulphate to the flotation of pyrite were found to produce depressing effects depending on the additive concentration and pH of the solution.

WIDCO is a surface coal mine located near Centralia, Washington. The WIDCO preparation plant processes over 7 million tons of run- of-mine coal each year with a product yield averaging 72%. In the jig type preparation plant the fine refuse amounts to approximately 130 dry tons per hour of 28mesh by 0. This fine refuse material is thickened in a 160ft. diameter static thickener with the use of lime as a coagulant and organic polymer as a flocculant. Once thickened the fine refuse, which is predominately bentonitic clays, has been dewatered and disposed of using several different methods. These methods will be discussed and include vacuum disc filters, ponds, solid bowl centrifuges, belt filter presses and experiments with electrokinetic dewatering.

"The ultimate objectives of the post-tensioned strands are to connect the precast segments into a ring and provide pre-stress in the tunnel circumference. The method involves inserting the strand through the preliminary embedded duct in the precast concrete segments and then tensioning the strand by jack and fastening it. The post-tensioned strand eliminates the necessity of bolt connections between the segments and may reduce the labor cost and increase speed of lining construction. Pre-stressing of the segmental lining reduces the steel reinforcement or fiber volume in precast segments and/or thickness of the precast segments which would result in reducing the manufacturing cost of them. Pre-stressing would reduce cracking and increase water tightness, and would provide smooth intrados due to eliminated bolt joints and pockets in the tunnel lining. Pre-stressing would increase resistance to internal pressures as well. Further, this system could work very well structurally in tunnels with squeezing rock or tunnels with high seismic loadings. INTRODUCTION OF THE METHODPost-tensioning is commonly used in the construction of bridges, large buildings, nuclear power stations, and water tanks but its utilization in tunnels is still in its infancy.The precast pre-stressed concrete segmental lining can be used for shield tunnels. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) has became an attractive alternative technology to be a new process to recover metal, of which can be substitute the existing Leaching/Solvent extraction processes. Solvent extraction of metallic ions is a technically important and also well-established process that is used in the chemical and hydrometallurgical industries.1 Solvent extraction techniques use the chelation of metallic ions dissolved in liquid solution with organic ligands. Conventional solvent-extraction technique needs large amount of organic solvents and often creates environmental problems.2 More environment-friendly technology is needed nowadays, and there have been increasing attentions to extract metal ions by SFE. CO2 becomes one of the most notable alternative organic solvents due to its nonflammable, nontoxic, nonpolluting, and relatively inexpensive properties with its moderate critical point (73.8 bar, 31.06 °C). Many works have been reported in metal extraction under the supercritical CO2 (scCO2) solvent.3-5 In this study, to recover cobalt from wastes especially from spent lithium ion battery scrap, we selected two ligands ? Cyanex 272 and DEA (diethylamine) for the metal extraction in scCO2. Cyanex 272 is a commercially available extractant along with its series, Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302. Smart and coauthors measured the metal extracting abilities of these three extractants, and found that Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302 extracted metal ions much better than Cyanex 272 in the scCO2 solvent.10 The pH of water contacted with high pressure CO2 (70-200 bar, 25-70 oC) is about 2.8-2.95 based on the calculation and the measurement.6-7 Cyanex 272 is known to be less effective as a metal extractant in this low pH environment compared with other Cyanex series. However, when DEA is added to metal extraction reaction with Cyanex-272, DEA works as a strong base to Cyanex 272 converting Cyanex 272 to a deprotonated form (Figure 1), which results in an easy formation of metal complex and the enhanced extraction rate of metal ion.8 Therefore, the purpose of this paper is the metal extraction from spent lithium ion battery waste using scCO2 with Cyanex 272 and DEA.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining&apos;s importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA&apos;s Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado&apos;s Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM&apos;s Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

Improved haul road conditions can positively impact mine operations resulting in increased safety, productivity gains, increased tire life, and lower maintenance costs. For these reasons, a monitoring program is required to ensure the operational efficiency of the haul roads. Currently, at Bald Mountain mine, monthly site severity studies, ad hoc inspections by frontline supervisors, or operator feedback reporting is used to assess road conditions. These methods are subjective and provide low temporal resolution data. This case study presents novel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies, applied on a critical section of haul road at Bald Mountain, to showcase the potential for monitoring haul roads. The results show that orthophotos and digital elevation models can be used to assess the road smoothness condition and to check the road design compliance. Moreover, the aerial mapping allows detection of surface water, rock spillage, and potholes on the road that can be quickly repaired/removed by the dedicated road maintenance team.

Mining at Phoenix is currently done by surface operation in the Fortitude and Bonanza Pits, at a combined rate of approximately 110,000 tons per day. A portion of the ore bodies targeted by these pits was mined previously by underground mining methods, dating back to the mid to late 1800?s. Most of the underground workings (voids) are located in the west central area of the Bonanza Pit. The surface operation requires excavation through voids, and there is a risk of pit floor subsidence that has to be addressed. This paper presents a review of the risk mitigation measures that were implemented to reduce risks to people and equipment working in the area.

Limestone quarry Vijenac, is one of the key limestone producers in B&H. Conventional massive drilling and blasting is the technique applied for limestone exploitation. Utilized blasting scheme causes appearance of large oversize stone pieces, uncontrolled flying stone and undesirable seismic effects. In order to reduce or eliminate exposed disadvantages and to improve environment in the area of Vijenac quarry, an innovative blasting scheme was tested. Conventional blasting scheme was changed from single row, deep inclined blast holes combined with two lines short horizontal holes to multi row, inclined blast holes combined with a single line short horizontal blastholes. Applied innovative blasting scheme reduces negative blasting impact on the environment through safer working conditions, reduced amount of dust after blasting, reduced explosive and energy consumption, reduced appearance of explosive gasses and reduced earth and air vibrations as the result of seismic effects.

Since the petroleum crisis in 1973, charcoal1 is being considered one of the most important fuel for the Brazilian consumers, mainly for pellet&apos;s producers. In replacing fuel by charcoal mixed up with ore, obviously one of the first thing to be investigated is its influence in the product&apos;s quality. Special attention has been given to the metallurgical characteristics. This paper infocus the effect of increasing dosings of charcoal to the pellet&apos;s porosity and how other physical and metallurgical characteristics will be affected accordingly. This work was carried out using two different finesses of charcoal and dosing varied from 0.5 to 2.0%.

The Monsanto Company&apos;s Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto&apos;s three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, &apos;forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. A full survey of the laboratory and blast-furnace tests on 2 types of acid pellets is given. From the laboratory tests, carried out in an atmosphere containing hydrogen, it appears that type B, produced out of 100% magnetitic ores, has a far better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A, produced from a hematite/magnetite mixture. The swelling index, chemical composition and mechanical properties of both types of pellets do not differ significantly. From the blast-furnace test, carried out with a burden consisting of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter with basicsty ratio about 2.2, and at constant driving rate, it follows that there is no significant relationship between the disintegration value of the pellets and the blast-furnace permeability. If also is concluded that the lower reducibility of the type B pellets leads to a significantly higher coke consumption.

Mines the world over tend to face a common range of problems. They begin life by trying to determine if there is sufficient product, usually under tons of earth, of sufficient quality to justify the operation. Once such a determination is made the mine must then be planned and brought into operation. Once operating most mines find that they are far away from suppliers, using very expensive equipment. Hence the three most common mining problems are, what does my ore body look like and how can it best be mined, how can I get sup- plies to my mine in the most cost effective way, and how do I control the vast dollars required to keep it all operating. Mincom started life by providing technical mining software to address the first of these problems and was very successful, particularly in the coal mining industry. However the company soon realized that if it was to become a significant provider of mining industry software it must also address the other major problem areas. Hence started what is now Mincom&apos;s largest business which is the provision of fully integrated mine management software with strong emphasis on materials and maintenance management to control costs. Mincom not only supplies the software but also provides a comprehensive implementation package using its own staff of experienced mining industry specialists. This papaer highlights some of Mincom&apos;s international implementation experiences.

Incorporation of a 2,727 mtpd, $5.7 million flotation circuit into the Mclaughlin flowsheet was completed in November 1991. This capital addition reduced overall operating costs and improved the gold recovery of the low grade refractory reserves over that expected for direct cyanidation. In addition, flotation provided a means to generate a sulfide concentrate which is utilized to supplement feed to the pressure oxidation circuit.
